Box Office Smash Was ‘Completely Misunderstood’ — Now It’s One of the Century’s Best

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:58pm

Whiplash was the talk of the Sundance Film Festival back in January 2014. Opening the fest, Damien Chazelle’s directorial debut was a high-intensity, goosebump-inducing thrill ride shot on a shoestring budget that kept its crowd-pleasing momentum all the way through Oscar season. A little indie that could, it became a box office smash and by 2015, it was one of 10 films nominated for Best Picture, cementing itself as one of the century’s best films. And still, the majority of its fans had it all wrong

Based on Chazelle’s critically acclaimed same-name short film, Whiplash stars Miles Tellerand J.K. Simmons as young drum prodigy Andrew and abusive mentor Fletcher, who's trying to extract greatness from him, respectively. Filmed in a whiplash-inducing 20 days, the project required Teller to do most of his own drumming and Simmons to perform all of his own yelling. Production was intense and immersive -- pretty demanding for a musical drama. But it all paid off.

Simmons won 47 (how many?!) awards for his role as the brutal instructor, sweeping Best Supporting Actor at all the major awards shows: Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards (now the Actor Awards). The film itself was nominated for Best Picture, vying for the statuette against giants like American Sniper, The Imitation Game, and the winning Birdman. And Teller’s career took off after the film’s recognition and critical success

For most, the film is a motivational underdog story wrapped up in one kid’s quest to become great against all odds. No amount of blood, sweat, and tears can keep this drummer down, right? Well, wrong, kind of. In reality, Chazelle’s film is a critique on obsession and toxic ambition. He paints Fletcher's teaching methods as destructive — not inspirational. Collider, which recently named Whiplash in its most misunderstood movies, explains the pursuit of greatness as a slippery gateway into self-distruction.

“What Whiplash actually presents is a rich exploration of the delusion of the pursuit of greatness, highlighting how easily ambition becomes self-destruction,” the outlet writes. “This point is realized in the outright terrifying climax, with a wounded and banged-up Andrew playing in Fletcher's festival show, where Fletcher vindictively humiliates him before he returns serve, interrupting Fletcher’s speech by opening the next number prematurely. It is a hypnotic sequence of rivalry and respect, but also of the corrosion of character.”

Artwork is alway up for interpretation, though. The meaning is in the beholder. So no matter the maker's intent of Whiplash, what really matters is how it makes you feel. And so help us, this defining modern drama is like perfectly timed crescendo, building to a rush that feels electric. If you haven't seen it yet, do that now. Fletcher's orders.

Whiplash is streaming on Netflix.

1993 Rom-Com Named a 'Best Romance Movie From the '90s' Was Inspired by a Classic Film

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:53pm

It's practically destiny that Sleepless in Seattle is one of the top romance movies of the '90s according to IMDB. The romantic comedy is considered to be one of the best and was praised by critics at the time for being "as ephemeral as a talk show, as contrived as the late show, and yet so warm and gentle I smiled the whole way through."

Director Nora Ephron was originally brought on as a writer to make the script sharper and funnier. The original spec script, written by Jeff Arch, was more of a drama than a comedy with ties back to the classic film, An Affair to Remember. While Ephron and Arch were admittedly very different writers, they both shared a love for An Affair to Remember, with Ephron saying she considered it to be the greatest movie she'd ever seen. Between Arch's sentimentality and Ephron's humor, the beloved script that would become Sleepless in Seattle was brought to life.

Sleepless in Seattle follows Sam Baldwin (played by Tom Hanks) who moves to Seattle with his son, Jonah, following the death of his wife. On Christmas Eve, Jonah calls in to a syndicated talk-radio program in search of a new wife for his dad, and Sam reluctantly gets on the line to talk about his feelings and deep love for his late wife. Annie Reed (played by Meg Ryan), a reporter in Baltimore, hears the program and is instantly drawn to Sam. Despite being engaged and having no clue where her motivations will lead, Annie writes Sam a letter asking him to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day.

The role of Annie was long planned with Meg Ryan in mind, and Tom Hanks was cast after it was determined Dennis Quaid (Meg's real-life husband) wasn't funny enough for Ephron's improved script. Despite movies often using Vancouver, BC to film, Ephron felt it looked "too Canadian" and principal production kicked off in Seattle in July of 1992. Some of the notable Seattle locations spotted in the film are Pike Place Market, Alki Beach, the Fremont Bridge, and the Sorrento Hotel.

Sleepless in Seattle received two nominations for Academy Awards and has withstood the test of time as a romantic comedy classic.

You Can Live Like a Millionaire on a $50,000 Social Security Budget in These 5 States

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:39pm

While many people do everything they can to save up for retirement, sometimes it's hard to put together enough money to keep things going after you stop working full-time. And while there are plenty of ways to offset having a lower budget than expected, including picking up part-time work, sometimes moving to a place with a lower cost of living can really do the trick.

Your dollar stretches a whole lot further in places where essentials like healthcare and the cost of living are lower. Fortunately for those who are looking to move somewhere a bit less expensive during there retirement, there at least five states in the U.S. where you can do more than just get by on $50,000 a year...you can actually thrive. Keep reading to find out which states they are.

Tennessee

Tennessee has a lot going for it when it comes to retirement. First, the state does not tax on any income, according to Edelman Financial Engines. Which means you won't have to lose a penny of your Social Security, retirement, or even part-time wages if you decide to move here when you retire.

Not only that, but property taxes are lower than the national average here, which means that homeowners won't have to worry about shelling out that much more on top of their monthly mortgage payments. That is, if they even have one. Tennessee homeowners pay an average of $333,651 when they buy a new home, according to Zillow. Retirees relocating from states with a higher average home value could walk away with enough equity to purchase a home outright here, eliminating the need for a monthly mortgage payment (and letting you keep a lot more of your retirement money in your pocket).

Kansas

Retirees who earn less than $75,000 a year don't have to worry about paying taxes on Social Security, according to Safe Money, which notes that the state's income tax runs between 3.1 and 5.7 percent.

And that's good news for folks bringing in less than $50,000 a year in retirement funds, because you won't have to worry about losing too much to taxes. That's true for real estate taxes as well, since the website notes that the state's property tax rate is only 1.33 percent. But it's not just tax laws that are more favorable for retirees in Kansas, according to Safe Money the cost o living is 12 percent below the national average here, which means your dollar goes that much further when it comes to essentials like food, utilities, and healthcare.

And, if you're considering somewhere like Topeka when you move, you may even be eligible for a relocation grant. The city is offering qualifying residents $15,000 when they move to the city, which is a nice way to boost your nest egg in your golden years.

South Dakota

If you're looking for an inexpensive place to retire, you may want to consider South Dakota, which ranked first in the country for affordability, according to Apple Springs at Boulder Canyon. The state's lack of income taxes and low sales tax (as of the time of publication, the website notes that it was as low as 4.2 percent in most of the state) certainly contributes to that.

Add to it the fact that there's no estate tax, and it becomes that much more appealing to retirees.

Oklahoma

Want to retire to Oklahoma? You won't be alone. The state is said to have one of the largest populations of people over 65 in the country, according to Unbiased, and for good reason. The state offers some pretty good tax incentives, allowing those over 65 to deduct $10,000 from their income.

That's on top of the fact that the state doesn't tax Social Security, so your retirement funds are safe. Plus, Oklahoma is known for its lower cost of living, from healthcare to housing. Lastly, the state has a vibrant cultural scene in many of its city centers, which means you'll be able to find plenty to pass the time in your golden years.

Missouri

According to Heisinger Bluffs Senior Living Community, it's easy to live large in Missouri... no matter how big your budget. That's because they say that a person could comfortably retire with just $39,969, with the following breakdown:

  • Housing costs $8,351.15
  • Healthcare costs $6,411.36
  • Groceries cost $4,353.10
  • Transportation costs $4,012.73
  • Utilities cost $3,693.58

That will leave you with a lot of money to spend on other things in the state, including vacationing and taking in the area's natural beauty.

While no destination is one-size-fits-all for retirees, and you can find plenty of expensive cities and neighborhoods within these states, it looks like this list provides a pretty good jumping-off point for anyone looking to retire on a smaller budget.

1969 Indie Hit Ranked Among 'Greatest American Movies' Used Real Drugs

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:35pm

The late, great Dennis Hopper was known for his scene-stealing work in front of the lens, but he also made a name for himself as director.

The first feature film helmed by Hopper, who died in 2010 at age 74, was Easy Rider — and it certainly went down in history.

Released on July 14, 1969, the independent production was a box office success, reportedly making $60 million on a budget of just $400,000. Decades later, the counterculture film is still considered groundbreaking for helping to spark the so-called New Hollywood era that ran rampant in the 1970s.

Currently, Easy Rider can spotted on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. Here's the official synopsis, per Rotten Tomatoes:

Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Hopper), two Harley-riding hippies, complete a drug deal in Southern California and decide to travel cross-country in search of spiritual truth. On their journey, they experience bigotry and hatred from the inhabitants of small-town America and also meet with other travelers seeking alternative lifestyles. After a terrifying drug experience in New Orleans, the two travelers wonder if they will ever find a way to live peacefully in America...

Easy Rider also made its stamp on cinema for the incorporation of authentic drugs during production. Per Far Out Magazine, co-star Jack Nicholson once said, while reflecting on the making of Easy Rider, “We were all stoned the night we shot the campfire scene... Each time I did a take or an angle, it involved smoking almost an entire joint."

In a 2009 interview with Extra, Fonda confirmed he was smoking "real pot" with co-stars Nicholson, 89, and Hopper in the memorable campfire scene. There was marijuana on set, but Fonda says not to believe any past rumors about LSD use.

"We did not take LSD, no matter what the rumors say," Fonda told the magazine. "You can't make a movie when you're ripped like that."

Donald Trump’s Granddaughter Shares Health Scare During The Masters Tournament at Augusta National

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:35pm

President Donald Trump’s eldest grandchild, Kai Madison Trump (18), is getting ready to graduate from high school. And in a new vlog about her pre-prom prep, the daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Haydon Trump recently shared a frightening experience while at the 2026 Masters Tournament.

What Happened to Kai Trump at The Masters?

After filming herself and her BFFs shopping for prom makeup at Sephora, the President’s granddaughter explains a recent medical ordeal. According to the 18-year-old, her skin started breaking out after she used hand soap to remove her makeup while attending The Masters at Augusta National Golf Course. And if you’re wondering, that’s not exactly advisable. But we can see how, for a teenager, hand soap is a totally viable option.

Kai shares, “I started getting like these bumps on my neck. And I had to get a shot. A steroid shot. I mean, the needle must have been this big.” To illustrate the size of the needle, Trump stretches her thumb and pointer finger as wide as they will go. She also adds, “And now, like, I don’t have a rash anymore. But I had like an allergic reaction to the hand soap on my face. I have very sensitive skin. And it was so, so scary.”

Why Was Donald Trump’s Granddaughter at Augusta National?

For golf enthusiasts, the Masters is one of (if not the) most popular events of the year. And while tens of thousands watched Rory McIlroy win his second Masters in a row, 18-year-old high school seniors don’t really seem like the tournament’s demographic.

So why did Kai attend the event? As it turns out, golf is her sport of choice. For this teen, it’s more than just a fun way to spend time with friends. Donald Trump Jr.’s daughter is a competitive junior golfer who will play for the University of Miami this coming fall.

View this post on Instagram

The high school senior posted a college update on Instagram, writing, “I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Miami. I would like to thank my mom, Vanessa, and my dad, Don, for always supporting me through my journey. I would also like to thank my great team for getting me to this point.” Of course, Kai gave a sweet shout-out to the President, “I would like to thank my Grandpa for giving me access to great courses and tremendous support.”

View this post on Instagram

Kai also, more recently, posted plenty of pics from The Masters, captioning the carousel, “Had the best time at Augusta! It is definitely my favorite golf tournament.” And based on that statement, it seems like the health scare didn’t overshadow her enjoyment!

Trader Joe's Striped Mini Totes Are Officially Coming

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:28pm

If you thought the frenzy over Trader Joe’s viral mini totes had finally died down, think again. A brand-new version is on the way, and this time, it’s striped!

After weeks of rumors circulating online, Trader Joe's has officially confirmed that a fresh take on its wildly popular mini canvas bags is coming soon, just in time for summer!

The mini-tote Trader Joe's fans have been waiting for

The buzz started with social media leaks and speculation. But now, there’s actual confirmation from the source. “Trader Joe’s has plans to offer a new striped mini canvas tote this summer,” a company spokesperson confirmed to the Reno Gazette Journal on April 27.

However, if you've seen images of the totes online, those likely aren't real, as the company noted that it doesn’t yet have exact timing or images to share—meaning shoppers will likely have to keep checking stores (and social media) for the drop.

Why this is a big deal for Trader Joe's fans

If you’ve been anywhere near a Trader Joe’s in the past two years, you already know these bags have moved beyond trend status and into cultural phenomenon territory.

Though TJ's has sold regular-sized tote bags for years, the first mini canvas totes went viral in 2024, sparking long lines, purchase limits, and constant low inventory. By 2025, the pastel minis were flying off shelves, creating long lines and selling out within minutes.

While they retail for just a few dollars ($2.99 each), the resale market is a whole other animal.

Some shoppers have flipped the limited-edition bags online for hundreds of dollars, turning the simple grocery tote into a full-blown collector’s item. Fans also enjoyed adding custom details to their totes, from painting on designs to adding charms and embroidery, with many selling those versions as well.

Meryl Streep Reveals Which Celeb Is ‘The Worst’ at Charades

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:23pm

While promoting her upcoming film, The Devil Wears Prada 2, 76-year-old actress MerylStreep revealed who she definitely doesn't want to see at game night.

The core four cast members of the long-awaited sequel, Meryl Streep, AnneHathaway, EmilyBlunt, and StanleyTucci, joined JennaBushHager in a pre-recorded interview for the Todayshow on April 29.

In the highly anticipated movie, Steep will reprise her role as MirandaPriestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of the fictional magazine, Runway.

The Sophie'sChoice actress revealed she was looking forward to working with ‘fabulous’ actors in the first film, particularly Tucci, who plays NigelKipling, the art director for the fictitious magazine.

“I loved Stanley, and we had played a lot of charades together at various parties,” she said. “We would always be the captains of rival teams.”

The Kramer vs. Kramer actress also shared some advice for picking your A-list game night lineup.

“Try not to get Robert De Niro on our team because he’s the worst,” said Streep.

Her co-stars jumped in to defend the Taxi Driver actor.

“Oh, but I bet it's so heartwarming,” chimed Anne Hathaway while Tucci added that the actor is "very shy.”

Streep responded with her impression of De Niro playing the guessing game. Adding “very shy and he's just not good at it.”

According to Variety, the upcoming movie “follows Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and as she faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.”

The first movie is based on the 2003 book of the same name by LaurenWeisberger

Some Retirees Could Be Missing Thousands of Dollars in Social Security Back Pay—Are You One of Them?

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:20pm

For many people living on a fixed income, every penny counts. That makes what I'm about to say that much more exciting for those who are hoping to scrape together a little bit more money while collecting Social Security, because two longstanding rules have just been appealed, potentially allowing certain people to collect thousands of extra dollars.

New legislation now allows public employees with pensions to collect Social Security, which may open the door for some to collect a big payday thanks to retroactive benefits. Here's how to find out if you qualify.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

The Social Security Administration Owes Some People Back Pay

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is revisiting a former rule that prevented people who worked in the public sector from collecting Social Security if they were instead eligible for a pension.

According to MassLive, the changes are thanks to the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset, both of which reduced or completely eliminated Social Security benefits for these people.

Related: Your May Social Security Check Won’t Be ‘On Time’—Here’s When You’ll Actually Get Paid

Additionally, the law prevented anyone who was owed money from the SSA from collecting more than six months' worth of payments. However, a bipartisan group of senators has come together to ask the SSA to provide full back pay to those who are owed money, regardless of the amount owed and whether they were initially cut off from collecting it under older laws on the books.

That means some people may be owed money dating back to 2024, which MassLive says could amount to as much as $1,000 a month for some. As you can probably guess, that could make a massive difference in the lives of those who are struggling to make ends meet right now, especially as the cost of living continues to increase for seniors who are struggling to pay for essentials like housing and healthcare.

Related: New Report Sounds the Alarm About the 'Catastrophic' Effects of Social Security Cuts

How to Find Out if You Qualify

If you believe that you are one of the people who should receive additional payments as a result of these changes, you can visit the agency's website to determine your eligibility. If you think you qualify or have additional questions, you'll need to reach out to the SSA directly. You can do that by calling the national hotline at 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting one of your local SSA offices in person to speak with a representative about the next steps.

Of course, if you choose to visit your neighborhood office, you'll want to first check with the SSA's website to make sure that they are open, since many offices across the country are experiencing disruptions that have caused them to close their doors to in-person meetings and visits, and are instead only accepting appointments virtually or via telephone.

Summer House's West Wilson's Cousin Arrested and Charged for Murdering Their Grandmother

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:20pm

Summer House's West Wilson's cousin has been arrested and charged for allegedly murdering their grandmother.

According to TMZ, Wilson's cousin Dakota Sweeney was arrested on Wednesday, Apr. 22—just one day before Wilson filmed the explosive Summer House reunion.

The arrest was made after law enforcement officials in Carroll County, Missouri responded to reports of a shooting at a residence and found Wilson's 75-year-old step-grandmother, Gayle R. Wilson, dead at the scene.

According to the probable cause statement obtained by the outlet, police say a witness told them that Sweeney was quietly sitting in the same room as his grandmother for 30 minutes before he allegedly shot her with a handgun.

Per the officers, the witness also told them Sweeney and Gayle argued earlier in the evening over Sweeney not helping with household chores.

Sweeney was arrested without incident at the scene, and after taking him into custody, police say they located a holster on his person. Sweeney has since been charged with first-degree murder.

Wilson's dad, Bruce, and Sweeney's mom, Kelly, are both Gayle's stepchildren.

Wilson has not publicly commented on his grandmother's death or his cousin's arrest.

Recently, Wilson has been subject to intense online scrutiny for his romance with co-star Amanda Batula. Batula is currently going through a divorce from Kyle Cooke while Wilson previously dated Batula's best friendCiara Miller.

Over the weekend, three audio clips from the upcoming Summer House reunion special leaked online.

In the audios, the cast can be heard clashing over the shocking Wilson and Batula romance and the implications it has for Batula’s friendship with Miller.

The clip surfaced shortly after host Andy Cohen shared on Instagram that it was one of the most intense reunions he’s ever hosted.

Following the leaks, Cohen slammed them as “disgusting” and “illegal,” and Bravo promptly launched an investigation which was resolved with “appropriate action” being taken by the network on Sunday, Apr. 26.

Bravo also noted there is “no evidence that any member of the cast was involved in the recording of the audio.”

Summer House airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.

Iconic '90s Actor, Starring in 'Greatest Sitcom of All Time,' Turns 72

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:16pm

From co-creating Seinfeldto selling out stand-up shows decades later, Jerry Seinfeld's legacy is that "a show about nothing" can mean everything.

There are very few comedians who have shaped modern humor quite like Seinfeld, who is celebrating his 72nd birthday on Wednesday. The actor was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island. He started performing stand-up during college in the 1970s, appearing at open-mic nights while he was a student at Queens College.

After frequent appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman, he released his first HBO special titled Stand-Up Confidential. In 1988, production for the sitcomSeinfeld started. Created by the comedian and Larry David, the sitcom aired for nine seasons on NBC and has been named one of "the greatest sitcoms of all time" by multiple sources, and has won multiple Emmy Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

Seinfeld, which is known as "a show about nothing," was set in New York City and followed the lives of the titular character and his three best friends: George Costanza (Jason Alexander), his ex-girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). In its first seven seasons, each episode opened and closed with stand-up segments from a fictionalized Jerry Seinfeld, cleverly tied to the storyline’s events.

Despite Seinfeld being cited as one of the greatest television shows of all time, the actor believes that his three kids — Sascha, Julian and Shepherd — are "the greatest show on Earth."

"You just want to watch them live," he told Graham Bensinger in a sit-down interview. "I don't watch all the shows that everybody watches. I don't find them interesting. I watch baseball and I like to see what the kids are doing. The kids are very entertaining because they're primitive human beings and it's fun to watch."

After wrapping Seinfeld in Los Angeles, the actor moved back to New York City to continue pursuing stand-up comedy. He went on tour and recorded a comedy special, I'm Telling You for the Last Time, and filmed a documentary titled Comedian, which showed the process of developing and performing new material for his shows.

In 2012, Seinfeld started a web series titled Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, where he would pick up a comedian in a different car each episode and take them out for coffee. The show ran from 2012 to 2019, and can be streamed on Netflix.

More recently, the 72-year-old stand-up comedian announced earlier this month that he will be going on tour this summer, starting this Friday in Jacksonville, Florida, and ending in Kansas City on Sept. 18. He is also set to hit Las Vegas, Rochester, Baton Rouge and Niagara Falls, as well as multiple cities in Tennessee, Florida, Texas and California.

Tickets for his upcoming shows can be found on his official website.

King's Hawaiian Debuts Dream-Worthy New Collab with Van Leeuwen That Fans Are 'Begging' Arrives in Stores

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 2:00pm

There's a reason King's Hawaiian remains one of the best-selling dinner rolls in local supermarkets across the nation.

Providing the perfect balance between its moist, spongy texture and a slightly sweeter flavor profile, King's Hawaiian has long been a favorite choice for hungry shoppers interest in the perfect roll to accompany their meal.

Fortunately, the iconic brand has also periodically released some standout products that provide consumers an altogether sweeter alternative. Such is the case with the company's newest collaboration with Van Leeuwen, a major first for the beloved bread brand.

Coinciding with the launch of their new Ube Coconut Sweet Rolls, King's Hawaiian is rolling out a new supersized collaboration with Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. As part of the new partnership, the two brands will be introducing a new Ube Coconut Ice Cream Sandwich, "bringing together bold, island-inspired flavors in an entirely new way," according to a recent press release from King's Hawaiian.

"At the center of the collaboration is a custom ice cream flavor developed by Van Leeuwen," the company said of the unexpected new product. "Sandwiched between King's Hawaiian's newly released signature soft, fluffy Ube Coconut Sweet Rolls, the brand-new creation delivers a vibrant, multi-sensory experience that's as visually striking as it is irresistible."

The return of King's Hawaiian's Ube Coconut Sweet Rolls comes nearly a year after the product first arrived in limited quantities back in June 2025. Given the instant popularity of the brand-new dinner rolls, King's Hawaiian ultimately brought the rolls back, complete with its exciting new dessert option via their partnership with Van Leeuwen.

King's Hawaiian and Van Leeuwen's limited-edition ice cream sandwich will be available at select Van Leeuwen scoop shops in New York, Los Angeles and Boston while supplies last. With that in mind, anyone with an avid sweet tooth should think about visiting their local scoop shops before the dessert officially disappears!

How Travelers Under 30 Can Save $20 on TSA PreCheck This May

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 1:57pm

If you're under 30 and you've never had a TSA PreCheck membership, now's your chance to get one for as little as $56.75. From May 1 through May 31, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is offering a $20 discount to all new applicants who haven't yet turned 31.

Dubbed the "TSA PreCheck $20 Take Off," the promotion is geared towards younger travelers, such as high school or college graduates. While you can't sign up for them, it would still make an excellent monetary gift for someone who wants to travel this summer.

For those who are already adulting, the discount gives twenty-somethings a quicker, more affordable way to get their next trip or vacation started. Once you've experienced waiting less than 10 minutes and avoiding the hassle of removing belts, jackets, and electronics, it's hard to travel any other way.

The discount is automatic, so depending on which of the three providers you opt for -- CLEAR, IDEMIA, or Telos -- there's nothing that needs to be done or said, other than showing your government-issued ID., such as a driver's license or passport. Unfortunately, only first-time customers are eligible for the deal.

The price varies by company: those who apply through IDEMIA will pay $56.75 after the discount, $59.95 through CLEAR, and $65 through Telos. Each membership is valid for five years, and another bonus is that once you have a membership, renewing it is less expensive. With 1300 enrollment locations across the country, finding one that's nearby shouldn't be too difficult.

For those over 30 or looking to get a TSA PreCheck membership for free, there are dozens of ways to either get reimbursed for the cost or pay less. Uniformed service members, DOD civilians, military spouses, and military survivor families are all eligible for free or discounted TSA PreCheck memberships. For everyone else, the most popular way to pay your TSA PreCheck fee is to find the right credit card.

Most travel credit cards, most notably Capital One's Venture Card, US Bank's Altitude Visa Card, or most any airline credit card, will reimburse you for the cost. There are also a number of non-travel-specific credit cards, such as Bank of America Premium Rewards, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Mastercard's Black or Gold cards, that will pay you back for the membership cost.

Nick Reiner Appears Stone-Faced in Los Angeles Court as Preliminary Hearing Date Is Set

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 1:56pm

Nick Reiner made another appearance in court after pleading not guilty for the murders of his parents Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Nick attended a hearing on Wednesday, Apr. 29 in a Los Angeles courthouse. During the court appearance, the 32-year-old waived his right to the 30-day preliminary period, meaning he agreed to expedite the proceedings.

As a result, a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Sept. 15, 2026. There, prosecutors will present evidence to be able to formally charge Nick with the murder of his parents.

For the hearing, Nick wore blue pants, yellow jail smock, and had plastic restraints on him. He also sported a shaved head and a goatee.

Nick was reportedly stone-faced throughout the hearing and spoke only three times to respond to the judge’s questions. At one point, he responded "yes" when the judge asked if he agreed with the upcoming hearing date.

Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder back in February. It remains unclear whether Nick’s defense team plans to pursue an insanity defense amid reports he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggling with drug addiction.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found murdered in their home on Dec. 14 and, later that night, Nick was arrested and charged for the crime.

The Reiner family issued a statement confirming the deaths on the night of Dec. 14.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement read, according to Variety.

Reiner first met Singer while filming When Harry Met Sally. The two married in 1989 and later welcomed three children: Jake, 34, Nick, and Romy, 28. Reiner was also the father of daughter Tracy, 61, from a previous marriage.

Jake spoke out for the first time about his parents' tragic deaths via a personal essay shared to his Substack on Friday, Apr. 24, describing the ordeal as his "living nightmare."

Michael Jackson's No. 1 Hit of All Time Didn't Even Make It Into His New Movie

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 1:48pm

When fans walked into Michael this April, they expected to hear some ofMichael Jackson’s biggest hits, from “Billie Jean” to “Thriller." And they did, but one surprising omission stands out: his actual No. 1 song of all time is missing from the film.

Related: Is the ‘Michael’ Movie Based on a True Story? Here’s What the Biopic Gets Right and Wrong

According to Billboard, that title doesn’t belong to one of his most iconic solo tracks. Instead, it goes to “Say Say Say,” his 1983 duet with Paul McCartney—a song that, somewhat shockingly, isn’t featured in the new biopic at all.

The surprising Michael Jackson song that tops them all

“Say Say Say” may not be the first song that comes to mind when you think of Jackson’s catalog, but the numbers tell a different story.

The track spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and ultimately became Jackson’s top-performing single on the chart, based on its overall run and performance metrics. To get those numbers, Billboard ranked his songs "based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at lower spots earning the least."

That means it outranks classics like “Billie Jean," "Dirty Diana,” and “Beat It” in terms of chart success, even if those songs have had a bigger cultural footprint. It also helps that the song had double the star power, combining the fan bases of both Jackson and the legendary Beatles singer.

Why 'Say Say Say' is missing from the movie

The new biopic Michael, which hit theaters on April 24, 2026, focuses primarily on Jackson’s rise from the Jackson 5 era through his “Bad” tour in the late ’80s.

Its official soundtrack includes 13 songs spanning his early career and blockbuster solo albums like Off the Wall and Thriller—but notably skips “Say Say Say.”

That omission likely comes down to the film’s narrative focus. While the duet was a massive hit, it’s technically part of McCartney’s album Pipes of Peace, not one of Jackson’s core solo releases. That makes it easy to leave out in a story centered on his personal artistic evolution, even if it came out during the timeframe the movie highlights.

Still, the numbers don’t lie: even decades later, the duet remains his most successful song on the charts—whether it made the movie or not.

'Leaving Neverland' Director Says Michael Jackson Biopic Is 'Impossible to Take Seriously'

Wed, 04/29/2026 - 1:46pm

Dan Reed, the director behind the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland, is not holding back his thoughts on the Michael Jackson biopic Michael.

Leaving Neverland detailed the sexual abuse claims against Jackson made by James Safechuck and Wade Robson. Reed spoke to Variety on Tuesday, April 28 about the recently released biopic starring Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson. The biopic notably ends in 1988, five years before the first sexual abuse allegation was made against Jackson, in adherence to a settlement made with the family of alleged victim Jordan Chandler.

"The film just flips the truth on its head — black is white, white is black, and two and two make five — and none of the people who go and see the movie will ever question that, but it's a movie that's impossible to take seriously as a counter-narrative to Leaving Neverland," Reed said in the interview with Variety. "It was supposed to be the retort to Leaving Neverland, and they tried that in an early script and it fell apart, so they created this jukebox movie but haven't managed to create a plausible narrative that would explain Jackson's fondness for children."

Jackson and his estate have denied all allegations of sexual abuse against the singer. Jackson's family even released their own documentary Neverland Firsthand: Investigating the Michael Jackson Documentary to refute the allegations made by Safechuck and Robson.

"Why are they dancing around this?" Reed said of the Jackson family's response to the allegations made against him.

Reed continued, "It's well-known that Jackson spent a long time with small-boy companions, including taking them into his bed at night and locking the door, which is undisputed — and that alone, if someone made a claim, is probably enough to convict him in a court of child sexual abuse — but with Jackson, none of this stuff seems to matter. And neither the estate nor the writer of the film nor anyone else has provided an alternative narrative apart from, oh, he didn't have a childhood, so he needed to spend the night alone with kids, which makes no sense."

Reed also criticized Michael's director Antoine Fuqua for previous comments made in The New Yorker about the sexual abuse allegations where he remarked "sometimes people do some nasty things for money."

"Someone who's made tens of millions pushing a false narrative around a man who's a pedophile, that's a nasty thing," Reed said of Fuqua's previous remarks. "Mr. Fuqua has described his own actions while attempting to smear the protagonists of my documentary, and that makes me laugh."

A follow up documentary titled Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson was released by Reed in the U.K. in 2025. The follow up documentary is available on YouTube whereas the original documentary will be off of HBO's services until 2029. According to Reed, this is due to a non-disparagement clause contained within a deal HBO made with Jackson in 1992.
