Edgy ‘90s Heartthrob Once Called the New Jack Nicholson Turns 57
Intense and now-iconic actor Christian Slater turns 57 on August 18, 2026. Born in New York City, the future Hollywood heartthrob got his start at the young age of eight, acting on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live.
After a brief stint on Broadway in the early 1980’s, Slater transitioned to the big screen, playing Binx Davy, the younger brother of Helen Slater’s title character in The Legend of Billie Jean. Four years later, in 1989, he starred alongside ‘80s it-girl Winona Ryder and Shannon Doherty in what would become a legendary ‘80s cult classic—Heathers.

During the 2016 Edmonton Expo, a fan asked Slater about early comparisons to Nicholson. He replied, “Look, it was a thrill. Honestly, I love Jack Nicholson. I mean, he’s certainly a role model and somebody that I remember, you know.”
He went on to explain, “I was on a, shooting a movie of the week, I think at one point, and the guy I was working with asked me if I’d ever seen this movie Easy Rider. I was like, no, never saw it, and he’s like, oh, you got to check it out. So he handed me a VHS of this movie, and I watched it, and I watched Jack Nicholson’s performance, and I just immediately fell in love with him as an actor and just thought, Jesus, this guy is everything.”
The Hollywood hearththrob continued, “Oh man, if I could be a tenth of what this guy is, that’s what I would want to be….I mean, who wouldn’t at 16 want to emulate that guy?”
Of course, Slater’s acting career didn’t end at Heathers. He famously went on to star in other cult classics, such as the skateboarding flick Gleaming the Cube (1989), the angsty teen drama Pump Up the Volume (1990), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance (1993), Untamed Heart (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), and Broken Arrow (1998).

At the height of his fame, the actor ended up on the front page of the tabloids for his very public struggle with substance abuse. Slater got sober in 2005 and eventually returned to the limelight. From 2015 to 2019, he starred in the deeply dark psychological tech thriller Mr. Robot (with Rami Malek), earning a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for his role in 2016.
View this post on InstagramThe 57-year-old got a prestigious star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2025. At the time of his ceremony, the Hollywood Partnership celebrated the actor in an Instagram post, writing, “Whether he’s playing the charming antihero or voicing a sick animated villain, his impact is undeniable, and so is that signature smirk.”
'Hayden Panettiere's Ex Wladimir Klitschko Breaks Silence, Vows to Keep Her Memory Alive
Wladimir Klitschko is speaking out after the death of his former fiancée, Hayden Panettiere, promising to keep her memory alive for their 11-year-old daughter.
“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” the retired heavyweight boxing champion wrote on Instagram. “She left this world far too soon.”
Panettiere met Klitschko at a Los Angeles party when she was 19. They got engaged in 2013 and welcomed Kaya the following year, though they never married.
What Did Wladimir Klitschko Say About Hayden Panettiere’s Death? View this post on InstagramKlitschko, 50, said Panettiere was “no longer my partner” but insisted nothing could erase the years they shared or her place in their lives. In his statement, Klitschko focused on the couple’s daughter, Kaya.
“To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was,” he wrote. He also thanked fans for their support and asked for privacy “during this incredibly difficult time.”
What Promise Did Klitschko and Panettiere Make to Each Other?Just one month before her death, Panettiere echoed Klitschko’s words and shared with Fox News Digital that the two had made a pact never to speak badly about each other in front of their daughter. “Wlad and I have a good relationship,” she said. “We made a promise to each other that we would never say a bad word about each other to our child.”
Why Did Panettiere Give Klitschko Custody of Their Daughter?Panettiere transferred custody to Klitschko in 2018, saying she wanted to protect Kaya during a difficult period in her own life. She later explained she feared a public custody battle between two well-known parents would only hurt their daughter, adding, “If I fight, if I go to war about this, it’s going to permanently damage my child.”, as quoted by Fox News.
Panettiere died Sunday in South Carolina, and her cause of death remains pending following a preliminary autopsy that found no signs of trauma, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
1980 Folk-Rock Song, Written By Jackson Browne, Among ‘Greatest Rock Song Lyrics of All Time’
Folk-rock icon Jackson Browne began his career as a songwriter for other artists, but once he became a singer himself, he brought his poetic words to life in a way that music fans can never forget.
As one of the most highly praised singer-songwriters to come out of the 1970s era, Browne has plenty of great tracks in his discography, but one song released in 1980 has been spotlighted as having some of the best rock lyrics of all time.
Browne released the song “That Girl Could Sing” on his album Hold Out in 1980, and the track was a major success. Telling the story of a woman who was there for him when he needed a friend but wouldn’t be anything more, the beautiful lyrics stand out even decades later.
In a Forbes article about the “Greatest Rock Song Lyrics Of All Time,” out of all of Browne’s songs, “The Girl Could Sing” was picked as the best lyrical creation. The lyrics, “She coulda turned out to be almost anyone, almost anyone/ With the possible exception of who I wanted her to be,” were highlighted as the high point of the song.
Talking about the strength of the song, the Forbes writer said, “The best songwriting is universal and in writing a personal story, Browne shares a feeling of longing and emptiness that everyone in their life has felt at some point.”

The track also includes the illustrative lines, “Running into the midnight/ With her clothes whipping in the wind/ Reaching into the heart of the darkness/ For the tenderness within.” It’s an especially descriptive moment that really makes an impact on the listener.
Fans long wondered who Browne wrote the song about, with guesses including Laura Nyro, Linda Ronstadt, and his occasional backup singer Valerie Carter. While Browne kept it a mystery for a long time, he finally confirmed that he wrote “That Girl Could Sing” about Carter after she died in 2017.
Browne reportedly revealed the truth at a Winnipeg concert, telling fans, “It’s a song I wrote about her, there was a time that I was just crazy about her.”
The One Person Hayden Panettiere Wasn't Able to See Before Her Shocking Death
There was one person Hayden Panettiere wanted to see more than anyone.
In the months before her death, the Heroes star had been hoping to spend some time with her daughter, Kaya. But because Kaya primarily lives with her father, Wladimir Klitschko, in Ukraine, the actress’ time with her was limited.
Now, we’re learning more about a special trip that Panettiere was hoping to make before her life was cut short.
The actress’ hairstylist and good friend Erick Orellana spoke with Page Six after the tragic news of Panettiere’s death was reported.
“I last saw her a few months ago,” Orellana told the outlet. “She was talking about how she wanted to take a vacation, and that she wanted to go and see her daughter. Her daughter was always her absolute priority. She loved her so much.”
“Her daughter was the absolute light of her life,” the stylist continued. “She lit up when she spoke about her. Everything she did revolved around her.”
Panettiere began dating Klitschko in 2009 and the two became engaged in 2013. The couple welcomed their daughter, Kaya, in December 2014. After Kaya’s birth, Panettiere struggled with severe postpartum depression and addiction. In 2018, she gave Klitschko full custody of their daughter.
Despite the distance, Panettiere continued to speak lovingly about her daughter and the bond they shared. Her comments made clear that Kaya remained an important part of her life, even when they couldn’t be together in person as often as she wanted.
“I go travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her,” Panettiere told Jay Shetty on a May 2026 episode of the “On Purpose” podcast.
Panettiere was found unresponsive in an apartment in South Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 16. Her cause of death is still under investigation.

Ella Langley's New Duet Debuts on Billboard Amid Her Historic Chart Run
In the midst of her historic streak on top of the Billboard Hot 100, Ella Langley has another chart entry climbing up the ranks.
“Jaded,” the country star’s new collaboration with Koe Wetzel, debuted on a number of Billboard charts this week, as it soared to No. 8 on the Hot Country Songs chart, according to new standings dated the week of Aug. 22.
The track — which officially dropped on Aug. 7 — also debuted at No. 19 on the Hot 100, while coming out strong on several other top charts, including Digital Song Sales (No. 3), Country Streaming Songs (No. 6), Country Airplay (No. 25), all-genre Streaming Songs (No. 14) and Global 200 (No. 99).
Wetzel, 34, put out “Jaded” shortly after the release of his latest album, The Night Champion, which re-entered the Top Country Albums chart this week at No. 14, likely as a result of the buzz surrounding the new duet with Langley, 27.
Wetzel’s album, which dropped back in June, also re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 72 this week, marking its highest placement on that chart to date.
It’s not the first time Wetzel and Langley have worked together on a song, as they previously collaborated for the 2023 duet “That’s Why We Fight,” which didn’t make it onto any of the major Billboard charts at the time.
The duo’s latest chart success with “Jaded” comes in the midst of Langley’s historic streak at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 with her mega-hit single “Choosin’ Texas.”
Released in October 2025 as the lead single from her Dandelion album, “Choosin’ Texas” has been dominating at No. 1 for 18 straight weeks, making it one of the longest-running No. 1 hits in Hot 100 history.
Langley’s song is only one week away from becoming tied for second place with Shaboozey‘s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and “Old Town Road,” by Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, which each spent 19 weeks at the chart’s summit. The record for the longest-running No. 1 hit is still held by Mariah Carey for her holiday smash, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
Ella Langley Fans Are Calling For an Unexpected Collab Amid Her Chart-Dominating No. 1 Run
Ella Langley’s career is record-breakingly huge right now, so it’s not shocking that she has fans from all over the map. But few people were expecting to see “God’s Plan” rapper Drake pop up in the comments of her latest social media post.
And from the sound of it, he’s a big admirer of the country superstar’s talents.
“Goated Pen,” @champagnepapi — that’s Drake — writes below a recap post of Langley’s recent shows.
View this post on InstagramHer carousel is simply a collection of live photos and videos from her just-completed tour dates in Texas, but fans are focused on something else entirely: The allure of a potential Langley-Drake collab.
“Her pen def not dry. We need that collab gang,” one person says.
“Ball knows ball,” adds someone else.
And then there are these comments, which seem to indicate that another big country-rap collab is long overdue:
- “So collab is happening”
- “Ella Fella”
- “We need that collab”
- “Collab soon”
- “Maybe Ella can be who brings back rap features I’m so ready for it again”
- “Collab with her please”
Langley isn’t afraid of a good collaboration — she’s got a new one out with Koe Wetzel — and she has already worked with country music’s biggest players like Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert and Riley Green. She’s also got a different kind of collab coming in a partnership with BUM Energy drinks. Perhaps it’s time for her to branch out further, knowing fans are thirsty for it?
The “Choosin’ Texas” hitmaker is riding a tidal wave of solo success right now. Her aforementioned hit single is still at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is an all-genre chart. If she holds tight, she’ll pass Shaboozey’s “Tipsy (A Bar Song)” and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” in a race to become one of the three longest-running No. 1s in the chart’s history. She might even come for Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (22 weeks at the top). Plus, she just became the first woman ever to sit at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and country-specific Country Airplay charts simultaneously.
View this post on InstagramDrake will need to be patient if he wants to collab, because Langley has a busy fall ahead. The second leg of her Dandelion Tour starts this week in Green Bay, Wisc. (Aug. 20) and runs through Halloween.
Popular Frozen Treat Sold Nationwide Recalled by Dreyer's Over Glass Contamination Risk
Summer is all about keeping the freezer stocked with your go-to treats, but it looks like one popular pick just hit a snag.
Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Inc. is pulling several Outshine Fruit Bar flavors off shelves nationwide after discovering the frozen treats may contain small pieces of glass.
In an August 16 press release shared on Sunday, August 16, the California-based company issued a voluntary recall, saying select batches of its Strawberry, Watermelon, Grape, Tangerine, and Black Cherry bars, sold in 6-count, 2.5-ounce boxes, could be affected.
The company distributed the products to retailers nationwide.
Which Outshine Fruit Bars Are Included in the Recall? The recall applies only to specific batch codes printed on the bottom of each package, with best-before dates spanning from June 2027 through November 2027. In the release, Dreyer’s emphasized that no other Outshine flavors or product lines are affected, so shoppers with unaffected varieties can keep their boxes as usual.
How Can You Identify the Recalled Batches? View this post on InstagramConsumers are urged to check the batch code and UPC number stamped on the bottom of their Outshine Fruit Bars packaging against the list included in the company’s official recall notice.
Each flavor carries its own set of affected codes, so it’s worth double-checking every box in the freezer rather than assuming one flavor clears the others.
To check if the bar you purchased could be contaminated, check the images and other details here.
Has Anyone Been Hurt by the Contaminated Fruit Bars?So far, Dreyer’s said no injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall. The company said food safety remains a top priority as it works through the issue. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality and to earning the trust of our consumers and customers every day,” Dreyer’s said in its release.
What Should You Do if You Have the Recalled Product?Anyone who purchased the affected Outshine Fruit Bars can dispose of them or return them to the store where they were bought for a full refund. Customers who believe they may have been injured after eating the product are encouraged to contact a healthcare provider right away.

Chris Hansen Questions Hollywood’s ‘Motive’ With ‘Primetime’ and Reveals Who He’d Have Chosen to Play Him
Chris Hansen isn’t ready to judge Primetime until he sees it, but the former To Catch a Predator host already has some reservations about Hollywood’s take on his story.
Hansen says he wasn’t consulted about the film before it was made and suspects his name may have been used because it helps sell the project. He also revealed that Robert Pattinson wasn’t his choice to play him, saying he once envisioned Denis Leary in the role.
“A couple months ago, they came and said, ‘Hey look, we’re doing this, we’d like you to have some sort of consideration in terms of helping us with this,’ ” Hansen said in an interview with Annie Elise, sharing that he wasn’t consulted until after the film was made. “As a reporter, it’s sort of silly for me to talk about something that I haven’t seen yet. My suspicion is that they used my name because it helps in a commercial enterprise.”
That’s when he pivoted to ponder filmmakers’ choice to have Pattinson play him. “It looks dramatic. It looks very dramatic. I know [Robert Pattinson] is a popular actor, and I know the director [Lance Oppenheim] is a popular guy,” he said. “I also have some questions: What’s Hollywood’s motive here?”
Hansen added that he didn’t even get to choose who played him, revealing who he originally envisioned taking on the role. “Years ago, I had crafted a script and thought Denis Leary would be a good guy to play me — depending on the age of it all.”
In a previous interview with NewsNation, Hansen described Pattinson’s portrayal as “very dramatic,” adding, “I’ve been asked not to talk about it a great deal at this point.”
From the first trailer, Pattinson’s performance has largely drawn praise, with viewers and critics zeroing in on his convincing transformation into Hansen, particularly his voice and mannerisms. One early reaction called his impression “spot on,” while others have praised the unexpected casting and Pattinson’s commitment to the role.

A Professional Chef Says This Is the Best Way To Turn a Can of Kidney Beans Into Dinner in 15 Minutes
One of my favorite pantry staples is a can of beans—and my favorite type of bean is the kidney bean. Not only are are kidney beans easy to prepare, filling and packed with nutrients (more on their nutrient profile below), but they also have the loveliest nutty flavor, which helps them stand out in any dish.
Maybe having a favorite specific kidney bean makes me a huge nerd, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t spread the word about my absolute No. 1 kidney beans: Goya’s Dark Kidney Beans. Honestly, I sometimes make myself a snack of these beans topped off with olive oil and nothing else. It sounds boring, but trust me—it’s so good.

That said, sometimes I’m craving more than just a bowl of plain kidney beans, and I want to take them to the next level. So, to find out the best way to turn a can of kidney beans into dinner in 15 minutes, I turned to Haley Duren, Executive Chef at Long Count, a wine bar and restaurant in New York City’s East Village.
Duren exclusively shared her recipe for 15-Minute Kidney Bean Hummus Plate with Spiced Vegetables with Parade, and it sounds absolutely delicious. Keep reading for Duren’s full recipe and to learn more about why the kidney bean is such a powerhouse.

Why Kidney Beans Are So Good“Kidney beans are low-key the ultimate pantry MVP: cheap, filling, and down for basically any flavor situation,” Duren tells Parade. “You can blend them, crisp them, mash them or throw them straight into a bowl, and they always make dinner feel legit.”
She adds that kidney beans are a “minimal effort, maximum payoff” food.
Not only that, but kidney beans are super nutritious. Per WebMD, one serving of canned kidney beans (a half cup) contains 7 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 105 calories and 1 gram of fat. Kidney beans also contain important nutrients like folate, iron, manganese, phosphorus and vitamin B1.
Additionally, various research (including a May 2024 paper in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition) has found that consuming beans can possibly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

1985 No. 1 Country Hit Turned a Weird Dream Into an Unstoppable Supergroup Smash for The Highwaymen
In 1985, four of country music’s greatest icons joined forces for a supergroup project that defined an unforgettable era.
But long before Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson stepped into a Nashville studio together, the song that launched their collaboration originated from a late-night fever dream in a London hotel room. What sounded unbelievable on paper eventually turned into an immediate phenomenon reported American Songwriter.
Gathering these four legendary solo stars under one roof was a massive gamble. Cash, Nelson, Jennings, and Kristofferson had distinct styles and packed schedules, making a full collaboration seem almost impossible on paper.
Yet, the raw power of their combined voices created a sound unlike anything else on country radio. One extraordinary track that went straight to the top of the country music charts came from a song another country superstar couldn’t get released.

Songwriter Jimmy Webb told the story of its creation to the website Performing Songwriter. Webb explained that during a London trip, after a night of drinking with Harry Nilsson, he went to sleep and had a vivid dream, which turned into the song “Highwayman.”
Webb explained, “I went to sleep and had an incredibly vivid dream. I had an old brace of pistols in my belt, and I was riding, hell-bent for leather, down these country roads, with sweat pouring off of my body. I was terrified because I was being pursued by police, who were on the verge of shooting me. It was very real.”
He continued, “I sat up in bed, sweating through my pajamas. Without even thinking about it, I stumbled out of bed to the piano and started playing ‘Highwayman.’ Within a couple of hours, I had the first verse.”
Webb said that the song sat unrecorded for years until Glen Campbell took a shot at it. But his record label wouldn’t release it. Then an unforgettable moment occurred, giving the song its second life.
“Eight years later, Glen played it for Johnny Cash,” Webb shared. “He was making a quartet album with Willie, Waylon and Kris Kristofferson.” The foursome originally didn’t go by their later name, Highwaymen; rather, they used their four last names as the group’s original moniker.
The songwriter concluded, “There were four verses to ‘Highwayman.’ Talk about predestination. I don’t know how they decided who would take which verse, but having Johnny last was like having God sing your song.”
The story of “Highwayman” is broken up into four parts. Nelson sang the first verse as the 18th-century scoundrel who robbed travelers and was eventually hanged. Kristofferson performed the song’s second verse as a sailor on a schooner who dies at sea.
The third stanza was sung by Jennings, as the construction worker who poured steel on the Hoover Dam. The final verse was performed by Cash, who wrapped up the story as the starship captain flying across the universe.
Looking back, “Highwayman” was so much more than a No. 1 song. It was a once-in-a-generation moment when four absolute giants put their massive egos aside, checked their pride at the studio door, and just made magic together.
The Highwaymen- Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson- were the last true outlaw supergroup in country music. They remain a quartet of icons who proved that true storytelling always has a place on the charts.
Taco Bell Is Bringing Back 4 Cult-Favorite Menu Items From 10 Years Ago
If you’ve ever enjoyed an after-school Taco Bell run, or a late-night Cool Ranch® Doritos® Locos Tacos craving, this one’s for you.
Taco Bell is reintroducing four cult-favorite menu items from 2016, giving fans a chance to revisit some of the fast-food chain’s most memorable offerings from a decade ago.
The throwback lineup is part of Taco Bell’s Decades #TBTB menu, which celebrates beloved items that may have disappeared from restaurant menus but have continued to live on in fans’ memories. The limited-time menu will be available nationwide beginning August 20, with Taco Bell Rewards Members getting early access to one returning favorite on August 18.
“For decades, Taco Bell has been woven into the lives of our fans, and there’s something special about revisiting the moments and experiences that made 2016 distinctly memorable,” said Luis Restrepo, Chief Marketing Officer, Taco Bell North America. “Whether you remember 2016 or another era of Taco Bell, the Decades Menu is about
reconnecting with the flavor and feelings that fans loved the first time around, while giving a new generation the chance to discover it for themselves.”

The chain is also leaning into the nostalgia of the mid-2010s with collaborations and experiences inspired by the era, including a partnership with streetwear brand Anti Social Social Club, a limited-edition digital camera collaboration with Camp Snap and early access to Divine, a new six-second looping video app that pays homage to Vine.
“This is much more than a collaboration about nostalgia. It sets the standard for how we want brands to show up in Divine – in ways that are joyful, creative and a natural extension of the community, not an interruption to it,” said Alice Chan, CMO, Divine. “Taco Bell shares that spirit, making it a natural partner, and we can’t wait to welcome its passionate fan community into Divine.”
Here are the four throwback favorites coming back for a limited time:

Jimmy Fallon Jokes Melania Trump 'Ran Off' With Mitch McConnell
Jimmy Fallon has a wild theory about where Melania Trump could be after the first lady’s weeks-long absence from the public eye: She may have run off with Mitch McConnell.
During his Tonight Show monologue, Fallon joked about Melania staying out of the spotlight while Donald Trump campaigned on Long Island without her. After noting that she hadn’t been seen publicly in 29 days, Fallon imagined an even wilder explanation, telling viewers that maybe Melania had run off with McConnell.
McConnell, 84, has also been largely out of the public eye after a June fall that briefly left him unconscious and led to a hospitalization followed by weeks of inpatient rehabilitation. He returned home in early August but has yet to return to Capitol Hill, fueling questions about his recovery and when he will resume his Senate duties.
“All I know is that it’s going to be crazy when we find out she ran off with Mitch McConnell,” Fallon joked, adding, “That’s gonna be bizarre.”
Fallon also joked that perhaps Melania didn’t want to end up trapped in a catering truck with her husband. The joke referenced reports that Trump had hidden inside a catering container following credible assassination threats from Iran during his departure from the NATO summit in Turkey.
“I understand Melania is taking a step back with everything going on. She’s worried that at any moment she could be trapped with Trump inside her catering truck,” Fallon said.
The Reflecting Pool also became fodder for Fallon, who took a shot at Trump’s appearance while discussing the damaged grass on the National Mall.
“These are tough times for Trump. The grass is brown. The Reflecting Pool is green. And the bruise on his hand is blue,” he joked. “But don’t worry. Trump has a plan. He’s gonna let the healthy grass grow long and then rake it over to the bare spot. You comb it right over. You don’t even notice it.”
Fallon’s monologue continued with jokes about Trump’s plan to claim the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory, Alaska’s crowded gubernatorial race, Waffle House tacos and the NFL preseason, taking aim at the president and the week’s other headlines.

A Sweet and Buttery British Favorite Just Landed at Costco in Dessert Cup Form
Some desserts seem made for the first hint of cooler weather, and Costco just brought in a British favorite that fits the bill beautifully.
Rich, buttery, and made to be served warm, the warehouse’s latest refrigerated dessert find comes conveniently portioned into individual cups. That means there’s no cake to slice or pan to clean, and you can heat up exactly what you want when the craving strikes.
Check it out in this August 16 Instagram from @costcofam4u:
View this post on Instagram Costco’s New Sticky Toffee Pudding Comes in Six Individual Servings A traditional sticky toffee pudding. The new Sticky Toffee Co. Sticky Toffee Pudding is priced at $15.99 and includes six individually portioned 4-ounce cakes, bringing the cost to about $2.67 per serving. It’s a Costco item #1765212 and can be found in the refrigerated case.
Each individual dessert features a moist sponge cake made with dates and paired with a rich, buttery toffee sauce. They’re designed to be warmed before serving, making them an easy option when you want a cozy dessert without baking one from scratch.

Despite the name, sticky toffee pudding isn’t the creamy American-style pudding you might picture. The British dessert is traditionally a moist, date-studded sponge cake covered in a rich toffee sauce, and it’s commonly served warm with custard or vanilla ice cream. Its exact origins are debated, but the dessert became especially popular in Britain in the 1970s and is closely associated with Cumbria in northwest England.
Costco’s version makes that classic combination particularly convenient. Each cake is already individually portioned, so you can warm one for an after-dinner treat without committing to an entire dessert. For entertaining, all six can be served at once and dressed up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of cream.
And at just under $16 for six servings, these could be especially handy to keep in the refrigerator as fall entertaining season gets underway. With warm sponge cake, dates, and buttery toffee sauce, Costco’s newest dessert sounds like a comfort food that’s hard to leave behind.
Black Kitchens Are Coming for White Kitchens—Designers Explain Why Everyone's Making the Switch
Thanks in no small part to the Nancy Meyers aesthetic, kitchen trends have leaned white and airy for a while now. But more recently, designers have been noticing an uptick in black kitchens.
Not only that, but some design firms are even getting more requests for black kitchens than requests for white kitchens.
But why exactly are black kitchens becoming bigger than white kitchens? To learn more, we consulted two interior designers: Jackie Wright, Owner and Lead Designer at Macy Lane Designs, and Mahwish Syed, founder of Mahwish Syed Designs.
🪏🪴SIGN UP for the Dengarden / Parade Home & Garden newsletter for a weekly dose of our favorite house hacks, decor trends and shopping deals🪏🪴
“The utilization of the color black in interior design has never really gone out of style,” Wright tells Parade. “However, how homeowners choose to use rich colors has differed throughout the years.”
Curious to find learn more about why black kitchens are the new white kitchens, as well as why Wright and Syed love black kitchens so much? Keep reading for their insights!

Why Are Black Kitchens So Popular Right Now?“A big trend we are seeing right now is the reintroduction of spaces that have more depth, warmth, and personality compared to the all-white kitchens of years past,” says Wright.
“Black cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and lighting deliver that in a way that feels refined but still works beautifully across a variety of design styles,” she adds. “When paired with natural wood tones, textured stone, or layered lighting, a kitchen that is predominantly black feels warm and sophisticated and, if done right, will stand the test of time.”
Syed’s work as a designer is rooted in neuroaesthetics, which is the scientific examination of how our brains respond to design, art and other visual surroundings. She explains that since the kitchen is often that heart of a home, it makes sense that consumers are leaning towards calming colors like black.
“The kitchen is where alchemy takes place and it’s befitting that black kitchens carry that depth and grounding,” Syed tells Parade. “It’s no wonder that black kitchens are in style because color impacts not only our biology but also our desire to embrace mystery.”
Why Homeowners Are Moving Away From All-White Kitchens“We are moving away from the sterile and antiseptic whites to darker tones because I believe it’s more comforting,” says Syed. “White stimulates while black pacifies. I have designed both versions but what I prefer is a balance between these hues. Black grounds white, adding visual contrast and symbolic depth.”
Wright says that her firm still gets plenty of requests for “light and bright” kitchens, but recently, more homeowners are requesting black elements in their kitchens “because it feels elevated and more distinctive.”
She notes that clients who are after modern kitchen aesthetics are particularly embracing black cabinetry in their kitchens. “Using black creates contrast and visual depth, giving a kitchen a more custom or high-end look that feels thoughtfully designed,” Wright says.
“If there is one overarching theme we are seeing from homeowners right now, it’s that they want their house to look different than everyone else’s,” she adds. “Using black in strategic ways helps them achieve that design goal.”
5 Reasons Designers Love Black KitchensHere are five of Wright and Syed’s favorite things about kitchens with black design elements.
1. Black Looks Especially Elegant With Light Wood“My favorite use of black in a kitchen is when it is paired with a lighter-toned wood,” says Wright. “The combination of black and white oak looks very elegant and clean. This can be accomplished by combining black and oak cabinetry, white oak cabinets with black matte black hardware and plumbing fixtures, or bringing in unique lighting that incorporates black in some way.”
2. Black Adds Instant Depth“Whether it’s a beautifully veined nero marquina black marble countertop, deeply textured Japanese yakisugi charred wood cabinetry or blackened steel hardware, a black kitchen creates depth,” explains Syed. “I love using black in my designs because it deepens your calm and envelops you in mystery and imagination.”
3. Black Kitchens Make a Statement“As a designer, I love it when clients are willing to step outside of their comfort zone and go in a design direction that is unique and bold,” says Wright.
“Homeowners who are leaning towards moody and darker elements in their home are OK with going against the grain,” she says, applauding these customers for “being unique and not wanting their homes to look like every other person’s house on the block.”
4. Dark Spaces Can Feel Grounding“A black kitchen reminds me of our ancient roots, when firelight was the only source of illumination, and darkness invoked the safety of enclosure,” Syed explains, noting that she enjoys designing from that “anthropological perspective.”
“Our technology may be rapidly evolving, but our biology is still over three hundred thousand years old,” she adds.
5. Black Is Surprisingly Timeless“In the same way an iconic couture black handbag or a perfectly tailored black blazer never really goes out of style, a black kitchen can read as timeless, even signature,” Wright declares. “Black is one of the steadiest neutrals in design, which makes it an ideal base; it plays nicely with almost any finish, material or color palette.”
