Nearly 13 years after his death, Cory Monteith would have turned 44 today.

Monteith, who played Finn Hudson in Glee, died at the age of 31 from combined heroin and alcohol toxicity in his hotel room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver. He previously struggled with drug abuse, but overcame it after he landed Glee’s leading role. However, returning to his hotel alone on July 13, 2013, the actor took a lethal amount of drugs and alcohol.

Last year, his girlfriendLea Michele and Glee co-star opened up about loss and grief.

“It was so sad [and] it was so depressing,” Michele said on the Therapuss podcast hosted by Jake Shane. “I was 26 and no one handed me a guidebook. It was a fast education on more stuff than I could ever even process.”

Glee incorporated Monteith’s character’s death into the series to pay tribute to him, but Michele said that it was challenging going back to work. She returned to film season 5 of Glee only one month after Monteith’s death.

“If we didn’t show up to work, then people wouldn’t have work to go to,” Michele said. “That was a lot of pressure for me. So, I had to put my stuff aside so that everybody could continue to work.”

After Monteith’s untimely death, Glee’s creator Ryan Murphy said that a sense of joy had disappeared from set. Michele said that she’s never seen the tribute episode, “The Quarterback,” because if she doesn’t watch it, “it just kind of feels like Finn is still there.”

Michele’s Glee character, Rachel Berry, dated Monteith’s character in the show. In real life, the couple dated for over a year. According to People, Monteith and Michele were “very happy and very in love” when he died.

In 1977, the Steve Miller Band was riding high on the success of the album Book of Dreams. The 10th studio album from the San Francisco-based rock band was fueled by its lead single, "Jet Airliner.”  But while the song became a hit for the group, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 9,  1977, it didn’t come without controversy.

Written by Paul Pena, the song was recorded two years earlier for Miller’s Fly Like an Eagle album but wasn’t included on the record. When it appeared on Book of Dreams, some radio stations took issue with its lyrics, which included, “don't want to get caught up in any of that/funky s--- goin' down in the city.”

According to VH1, “Jet Airliner” was one of several popular songs that toyed with the FCC rules, which prohibited the use of “seven dirty words” on air. Some stations, especially AM radio, played an edited version of the song that subbed the phrase “funky kicks” for “funky s---.” The sub also appeared on the single version of the song released in April 1977.

Steve Miller reworked the song in other ways

Miller once reflected on "Jet Airliner” in an interview for the book The Guitar Greats. He noted that he met Pena through a mutual friend and was taken with his song, which had never been released.

“I particularly liked 'Jet Airliner,' so I worked on it and reshaped it into what it became,” Miller said, per Songfacts. The outlet noted that Miller changed several key lyrics, including Pena’s  line "I couldn't seem to quite get it down" to "the big wheel keeps on spinnin' around."

In a radio interview, Miller told Ultimate Classic Rock Nights that Pena’s original song was spawned by his bitterness with the music industry. “It was very long, verse after verse after verse of anger, a lot of it,” the singer recalled. “So I took the song and said, ‘Can I reshape it? Can I play with it?’ They said, ‘You can do anything you want to with it.’ I remember laying out all the lyrics, typing them up on big sheets of paper… I had them all out on my kitchen table, moving the verses around… then I got it all together and went, ‘Yeah, this’ll work – it’s great!’”

‘Jet Airliner’ was temporarily ‘banned’ by some radio stations

More than 20 years after its release, “Jet Airliner” temporarily landed on a list of songs deemed insensitive for American radio. According to Kerrang, the song was one of 164 records that many radio stations banned following the September 11 terrorist attacks against America.

At the time, the media corporation Clear Channel Communications sent a memo to more than 1100 radio stations, which listed songs considered “lyrically questionable” to play following the airplane-led 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Loudwire clarified that radio stations were strongly urged not to play “Jet Airliner” due to its lyrics about flying in a plane. Other questionable songs included Metallica’s “Seek and Destroy,” AC/DC’s “Shot Down in Flames,” Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind”, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” and the entire Rage Against the Machine catalog.

Star-crossed young lovers, a manipulative politician-villain, a hit theme song, and a motorcycle all set the stage for one of Days of Our Lives' most iconic moments in 1984.

While stories such as Marlena's (Deidre Hall) possession by the devil, and Vivian Alamain (Louise Sorel) burying Carly Manning (Crystal Chappell) alive, made Variety's 10 Best Moments from Days of Our Lives, it was Hope Williams (Kristian Alfonso) 1984 wedding to the evil Larry Welch (Andrew Masset) that took the top spot as the soap's most iconic moment.

The storyline actually began a year before the wedding. Back in 1983, merchant marine Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) returned to Salem and instantly connected with Hope (Alfonso). Around the same time, Larry Welch (Masset) arrived in Salem and quickly became the district attorney. Soon after he became obsessed with Hope and decided she would be his no matter what it took. Eventually Larry went so far as to hire a sex worker to come between Bo and Hope, which ultimately gave himself an opening to pursue her.

Over the following months, Bo and Hope tried to reunite, but Larry threatened Hope and told her he would harm Bo if she refused to marry him. Hope reluctantly agreed, setting the stage for the iconic wedding day moment.

On June 3, 1984, Larry and Hope were set to be married, but Bo came to the chapel and pleaded with Hope to stop the wedding and leave with him. Hope denied him. “I’m not your woman anymore!” She tearfully cried, adding, “I’m not going to let you hurt me again.”

But Bo was stubborn and not one to accept a ‘no’ from the woman that he loved. It was with the help of Hope’s grandmother, Alice Horton (Francis Reed), that Bo was able to convince Hope to leave with him. But the question then became how?

It was then that the two recruited P.I. Howie Hoffstedder (Stanley Brock) to assist with a surprising twist.  As the wedding took place, ‘Hope’ made her way down the aisle, surrounded by family and friends.

As Larry lifted the veil to see his bride-to-be, a stunned groom and crowd realized it was not Hope but Howie in a wig.

Meanwhile, outside of the chapel, viewers watched as Bo and Hope raced on his motorcycle away from Salem as Bonnie Tyler’s hit single, “I Need a Hero,” played in the background.

Despite confessing their love, the journey to reconciliation was not immediate after the wedding. Larry found Hope and forced her to enter into a loveless marriage, while Bo became involved with his ex-lover, Megan Hathaway (Miranda Wilson).

Eventually, however, with many twists along the way, Bo and Hope reunited, and after overcoming even more dramatic turns, they remain together, stronger than ever to this day.

In 1973, one of the most iconic soft rock ballads ever recorded was released, and 53 years later, the Eagles' "Desperado" is hailed as a near-perfect classic, even though its singer admitted he "could have done better."

"Desperado" was a song on the band's second LP. The ambitious concept project featured an Old West theme, and its tracks were primarily written by Glenn Frey and Don Henley.

The song never cracked the Billboard Top 100, but it remains one of the band's most beloved tracks. Ranker named it one of the band's best songs of all time in 2025, where it landed at No. 8 between "Tequila Sunrise" and "Life in the Fast Lane." Additionally, a decade earlier, Rolling Stone placed the song at No. 3 in a readers' poll ranking the band's best songs.

In a 2015 conversation with Howard Stern, Eagles drummer Don Henley revealed that although "Desperado" has become one of the band’s most iconic songs, he felt he could have delivered a stronger vocal performance.

Henley revealed, "I could have done better [vocally] because I didn't get a chance to sing it more than three or four times. We had an English superstar producer, Glyn Johns, who was trying to make an album in an economical fashion."

"They sent us to England, and we were in this huge studio. The London Philharmonic was sitting behind me. I was scared [expletive]."

He continued, "I was out there trying to sing, and a lot of these guys were older guys. And they brought chessboards with them. They would set up the chessboards between their chairs, and between takes, they would play chess. They weren't really into it."

The takes were done live with the band and the orchestra in the studio simultaneously. Henley said that the recording session reflected the collaboration, showing "Desperado's humanity."

"It gives it a certain immediacy. It gives it a certain humanity. It's flawed, like humans are," Henley concluded.

"I could have sung it a lot better. I could hear them making remarks once in a while. I could hear one say to another musician, 'I don't feel like a desperado.'"

In an interview with Cameron Crowe, Henley said "Desperado" marked the beginning of what would become a legendry songwriting partnership with Frey.

"Glenn came over to write one day, and I showed him this unfinished tune that I had been holding for so many years. I said, 'When I play it and sing it, I think of Ray Charles — Ray Charles and Stephen Foster. It’s really a Southern gothic thing, but we can easily make it more Western.'"

He concluded, "Glenn leapt right on it — filled in the blanks and brought structure. And that was the beginning of our songwriting partnership; that’s when we became a team."

Glenn Frey died in 2016. Don Henley remains a core member and frontman of the Eagles, and the band is currently in its final era, with a 2026 residency at the Las Vegas Sphere.

Today marks the birthday of late actress Natasha Richardson.

The beloved '90s star would have been celebrating her 63rd birthday on Monday, had her life not been tragically cut short. She was born on May 11, 1963, making her 45 years old at the time of her death in 2009.

Richardson, who is most well-known for her role in the 1998 cult classic film The Parent Trap, died unexpectedly in March 2009 after sustaining a fatal brain injury while on a ski trip in Canada.

She was on family vacation in Quebec, Canada, with her two sons, Michaél and Daniel, while her husband, Liam Neeson, was filming a movie in Toronto. On March 16, 2009, Richardson was taking a private lesson with an instructor at the Mont Tremblant ski resort when she fell and hit her head on the beginner's trail. She was briefly examined by the ski patrol members, but declined to seek further medical attention, the resort previously said in a statement to CNN. 

Despite initially seeming fine, Richardson, who wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the fall, had actually suffered a serious brain injury, specifically an epidural hematoma. 

In the 48 hours after the incident, Richardson’s condition worsened, and she died two days later on March 18, 2009.

At the time of her tragic death, Richardson’s sons were 13 and 12 years old. Neeson, whom she had been married to since 1994, flew from Toronto to be with his wife at the hospital in Montreal, before she was brought to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where she later died. 

"[Her death] was never real. It still kind of isn’t,” Neeson previously told Anderson Cooperon 60 Minutes back in 2014. “There [are] periods now in our New York residence when I hear the door opening, especially the first couple of years…anytime I hear that door opening, I still think I’m going to hear her."

Chad Gray shared heartbreaking news with fans after revealing the death of his dog, Milly, in an emotional Instagram post. 

The longtime Mudvayne frontman posted photos of Milly along with a lengthy message about their bond and how deeply her loss has affected him.

Gray wrote, “Milly my baby girl. I love you so much and I already miss you terribly.”

The singer explained that Milly became part of his life when he met his wife seven years ago. In the tribute, he thanked the dog for bringing joy, love and comfort into their home.

“I just wanted to write this to tell you thank you for welcoming me into your life when I met your mommy 7 years ago,” Gray shared. “You were so precious.”

He also reflected on caring for Milly through the years, saying she made every day better for him and his wife.

“Thank you for letting me love you, nurture you, nourish you, take care of you and hug, kiss and pet your super soft fur for all these years,” he wrote. “You made every single day better for me and your mommy.”

The emotional post arrived during a busy period for Gray’s career. Just days earlier, the singer spoke publicly about his new 30 Years Of Madness solo shows, which celebrate music from both Hellyeah and Mudvayne.

In a recent interview, Gray explained that he did not want to stay inactive while Mudvayne takes a break from touring in 2026.

“I’m 54 [explicit] years old. I’m not taking a year off,” Gray said. “That’s where I shine. I love to service my fans.”

The concerts mark the first solo performances of his career. The debut show took place in Las Vegas and featured musicians connected to both Mudvayne and Hellyeah.

Gray also said he enjoys performing songs from both bands together because fans do not always associate the projects with each other.

“You can’t always guarantee that Mudvayne fans are gonna be Hellyeah fans and that Hellyeah fans are Mudvayne fans,” he explained.

The singer described Hellyeah as a “passion project” and remembered how the group worked hard for more than a decade alongside late drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott.

Gray has faced several challenges in recent months. Earlier this year, reports confirmed he underwent surgery after tearing his MCL during Mudvayne’s final 2025 tour. Despite the injury, he completed the run using braces and support equipment before later focusing on recovery ahead of his solo appearances.

Mudvayne has also experienced changes behind the scenes. Guitarist Greg Tribbett missed part of the band’s recent anniversary tour after his wife reportedly died following a battle with cancer.

Even with the setbacks, Gray has continued to stay active creatively. Mudvayne recently released the songs “Hurt People Hurt People” and “Sticks And Stones,” marking the band’s first new music in more than 15 years.

The group originally formed in 1996 and became known for its heavy sound, masks, body paint and experimental style. Over the years, Mudvayne sold millions of records worldwide and built a strong following in the metal community.

Now, fans are seeing a more personal side of Gray as he openly mourns the loss of Milly.

1967 was a big year for The Doors. On January 4 of that year, the Los Angeles-based rock band released their self-titled debut album featuring the breakthrough single “Light My Fire.” Eight months later, the group was booked on The Ed Sullivan Show days before their second album, Strange Days, dropped.

The TV appearance did not go as planned. As recounted on the Ed Sullivan Show website, producers asked The Doors band members to change the line “Girl, we couldn’t get much higher” for their performance of “Light My Fire.”

After performing their “newest hit record,” “People Are Strange,” on the live TV broadcast, the band segued into “Light My Fire.” But lead singer Jim Morrison chose to sing the forbidden line as originally written, infuriating Sullivan. ‘Strange Days’ arrives—underrated

One week after The Ed Sullivan Show fiasco, The Doors' follow-up album, Strange Days, was released on Sept. 25, 1967. The sophomore album spawned two Top 25 hits—“People Are Strange” and “Love Me Two Times”—but there was no No. 1 record such as “Light My Fire.”

Decades later, Collider ranked Strange Days as one of the most underrated classic rock albums of all time, describing the record as “stunning from start to finish. "'You're Lost Little Girl’ and ‘I Can't See Your Face in My Mind’ are a few of the most intoxicating Doors songs you can find, but who's talking about them?” the outlet asked.

There was no pressure for back-to-back albums

The Doors’ move to release two albums within eight months was not due to pressure from their record company, Elektra. In an interview with Guitar World, band member Robby Krieger recalled, “No, we were ready. We had tons of material for the first two albums; the pressure came on the third album. We ran out of stuff … It was also difficult to write while we were touring, so we started writing a lot more in the studio.”

While Strange Days never found the success of other Doors albums, Morrison once said he was very proud of the album. “I'm really proud of our second record [Strange Days] because it tells a story, it’s a whole effort,” the singer told Downbeat magazine in 1970. “Someday it will get the recognition it deserves, you know? I don't think many people were aware of what we were doing.”

The deep cut has been added to a whopping 2.4 million "sad" playlists, which is more than any other song in Spotify history.

"Lovely," was written specifically for the Season 2 soundtrack of the hit Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why, a show with intensely dark subject matter like depression and suicide. It spent a total of 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 64 in January 2019.

It was the first of Eilish's songs to land on the Hot 100, though she has had 43 other songs make the chart since then, including one No. 1 hit (2019's "Bad Guy"). For Khalid, "Lovely" is one of 32 songs he's had on the chart throughout his career.

In 2018, "Lovely" earned the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Top TV Songs chart, a position to which it would later return again in 2023 after it was featured in the Disney+ and Hulu series Goosebumps.

"Lovely" was named as part of Spotify’s recent data drop in honor of its 20-year anniversary. To celebrate the milestone, the platform has unveiled lists of its most-streamed songs, artists, albums and even audiobooks, of all time

In addition to the top "sad" song of all time, Spotify also announced its top love song: "I Wanna Be Yours" by the Arctic Monkeys, which has been added to 2.7 million Spotify playlists about "love." The platform also named its top breakup song of all time, revealed as Olivia Rodrigo's 2021 heartbreaker, "traitor," which has been added to 131,000 "breakup" playlists.

Though not a name that’s as well-known as other authors, Mary Renault was a visionary writer ahead of her time and is best known for her historical fiction novels about ancient Greece. In fact, when President John F. Kennedy was asked who his favorite author was, he said it was Renault. She was also popular with the gay community because her books included gay characters in same-sex relationships and featured them in a positive light, which was not common at the time. She herself was a lesbian and in a lifelong partnership with fellow nurse Julie Mullard from the 1930s until Renault died in 1983, according to Bibliomania.

Today's quote of the day comes from one of Renault’s novels set in ancient Greece and talks about the concept of hate being just as strong as love, which, of course, isn’t a good thing.

The famous writer was born Eileen Mary Challans on Sept. 4, 1905, in Essex, England, and wrote under the pen name Mary Renault. She attended boarding school and then St. Hugh’s College, Oxford, graduating with a degree in English in 1928, Encyclopedia.com reported. While in college, J.R.R. Tolkien—author of TheLord of the Rings—was one of her tutors, even encouraging her to write a book set in medieval times. She ended up burning it, per The Mary Renault Society, because “she felt it lacked authenticity.” Tolkien was right about Renault sticking with historical fiction, though; she just ended up going with a different period and found success there. 

As Bibliomania reported, Renault trained to become a nurse in 1933, which is, again, where she met her life partner, Julie. The two of them were eventually drafted during World War II to be nurses in Bristol, tending to soldiers returning home to England.

Renault has a lengthy list of books she wrote, starting with six novels set in modern times, ending with The Charioteer in 1953. This was her first book to have gay men as main characters and love interests. Then, from the late 1950s until 1981, she stuck to historical fiction, again all set in ancient Greece.  

As mentioned above, today’s quote is a short but powerful line about how strong hate is. And how, if you let it, it can consume you just the same.

“In hatred as in love, we grow like the thing we brood upon. What we loathe, we graft into our very soul.”

This quote comes from Mary Renault’s novel, The Mask of Apollo. This is set in the 4th century BCE in ancient Greece, and follows Nikeratos or “Niko” for short. He’s a “tragic actor” who also narrates the book. Through his perspective, you watch as Plato, the famous philosopher, clashes with Dionysios the Younger, a “young tyrant” and heir to Syracuse, which disrupts the whole city. 

The reason for the title is thanks to Niko’s golden mask of Apollo, which he carries around with him everywhere. The mask becomes his mascot, then a physical manifestation of his conscience at times, even telling it about his decisions. The mask came from a golden era of theatre, which is very different from what Niko is currently experiencing, where the masks they use now are flimsy and easily forgotten and discarded. So it represents not only a better time for actors, but also a strength that Nikeratos obviously wants to hold on to.

Deeper Meaning of Mary Renault’s Quote—Hate Can Be as Strong as Love

This line is spoken by Dion, Plato’s friend and a politician, who talks Plato into being a teacher to Dionysios the Younger to guide him in the right direction after his father (the ruler) died, even though he’s a “young tyrant.” In this scene, which is near the beginning of the book, Nikeratos is sharing a meal with Dion and Plato, having met them for the first time. 

The conversation turns to vengeance, and how Dion has seen too much to believe someone should match their “enemies in cruelty.” He then tells Niko, “to crave revenge is to fall down before one’s enemy and east dust at his feet.”

Then, he says the quote: “What worse can we let him do to us? In hatred as in love, we grow like the thing we brood upon. What we loathe, we graft into our very soul.”

The sentiment is powerful. This character is essentially saying that hatred is just as strong as love. And so if you’re not careful, hatred can fully consume you, just like love can. 

“We grow like the thing we brood upon,” Dion says, meaning that if we hold onto hate, we’re feeding it and letting it fester and grow. So we can either “brood upon” love, or we can do so with a negative feeling like hatred. Letting disdain for someone take over your life and soul is one way you can use up your energy. And even though we might not realize it, hate, being as strong as love, will take hold of and suffocate us if we don’t let it go.

More than 50 years after its release, Harold and Maude is earning fresh praise after being ranked among the best rock movies of all time by Ultimate Classic Rock.

The 1971 dark comedy-drama, directed by Hal Ashby, was highlighted for its unforgettable soundtrack by Cat Stevens and its lasting influence as a cult classic. The publication compared Ashby’s work with what Mike Nichols did for Simon & Garfunkel in The Graduate.

The story follows Harold Chasen, played by Bud Cort, a wealthy young man obsessed with death. Harold spends his time staging fake suicides and attending funerals for strangers. His lonely life changes after he meets Maude, a lively 79-year-old woman portrayed by Ruth Gordon.

Maude teaches Harold how to enjoy life, appreciate art and music and live freely. Their unusual friendship eventually turns romantic, shocking the people around them.

Although early reviews were mixed, the movie slowly built a loyal audience through repertory screenings and midnight showings. It later became one of the defining cult films of the 1970s.

The film was eventually selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1997 for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” It also ranked No. 45 on the American Film Institute list of the 100 funniest films ever made.

Today, the film holds an 86% critics score and a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The soundtrack has become one of the movie’s strongest lasting achievements. Stevens wrote original songs including “Don’t Be Shy” and “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out” for the film.

The songs blended perfectly with the movie’s themes about life, freedom and individuality. Over time, the soundtrack developed its own fan base and helped introduce younger generations to Stevens’ music.

In 2022, the full soundtrack received a wide commercial release to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary. The album featured remastered tracks from Abbey Road Studios and included previously unheard recordings.

Pacino, 86, wrote about passing on the role — which ultimately went to Harrison Ford — in his memoir Sonny Boy, as Deadline notes, and he shared more with Entertainment Weekly last year.

"I said, 'I think I'm in the mood to make Harrison Ford a career,'" he joked with the magazine, but later adding, "I was doing a show on Broadway at the time, and they handed me this script, and I thought, I don't understand."

Pacino continued, "But I looked at this thing and I sent it to Charlie Loughton, my friend and mentor, actually. I said, 'What do you make of this?' He was pretty wise and he said, 'I don't get it, Al. I dunno. I don't get it.' I said, 'Well, I don't either; what are we going to do? They offered me a fortune, but I don't know. No, I can't play something if I don't speak the language.'"

Forty-nine years ago, a crossover between disco and R&B soul achieved commercial success and is now considered one of the “best love songs of all time.”

The Emotions had a career-defining moment when they released “Best of My Love” in 1977.

The trio, consisting of the Hutchinson sisters Wanda, Sheila and Jeanette, rose to legendary status after the track received a strong reception from the public.

Written by Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White and Al McKay, the duo crafted a standout masterpiece for the vocal group as a way to showcase their striking vocal style.

With the track’s upbeat and funky rhythm along with its powerful meaning about unconditional love and positivity, it became not only a massive club favorite but also a radio staple in the late 1970s.

At the time, the single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five straight weeks and remained on the weekly chart for 23 weeks, cementing its place as one of the era’s most enduring hits.

Adding to this, the single also dominated the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart for four weeks, proving its crossover appeal among listeners.

From chart-topping success to major recognitions, The Emotions' signature song earned several accolades, including Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 20th Annual Grammy Awards and Favorite Soul/R&B Single at the 1978 American Music Awards.

The back-to-back success of “Best of My Love” also landed the trio an RIAA certification: Certified Platinum in the US, recognizing sales of over one million copies.

Decades later, The Emotions’ signature song still resonates with generations after Billboard released its top 50 best R&B Love Songs of All Time.

According to the outlet, the rankings were based on “weekly performance on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart from Jan. 30, 1965, through Feb. 1, 2025.”

Moreover, the list also includes songs about romantic love, self-love, love for others, heartbreak and physical attraction.

With this, the trio’s “Best of My Love” secured the No. 34 spot on the list.

The vocal group has been delighted with the renewed popularity of their songs, especially with the revivals from other artists.

“We're excited to the point of hypertension,” Wanda Hutchinson toldThe New York Times, adding, “We pray and meditate a lot and this is what we've been working for.”

Kelly Clarkson performed a powerhouse cover of “Best of My Love” in her show The Kelly Clarkson Show, while Mary J. Blige released a soulful revival of it as part of The Help soundtrack.
