1984 Hit Film, Written in Two Days, Ranked Among ‘Best Romantic Comedies of All Time’
The 1984 movie Sixteen Candles has been named one of the best romanticcomedies of all time. The John Hughes coming-of-age comedy ranked on Rotten Tomatoes' list of 200 memorable romance-themed films, where it was described as “significantly more mature than the teen raunch comedies that defined the era. “Sixteen Candles is shot with compassion and clear respect for its characters and their hang-ups,” the movie outlet noted.
Starring Molly Ringwald, Michael Schoeffling, and Anthony Michael Hall,Sixteen Candles told the story of Samantha Baker’s (Ringwald) crush on high school hunk Jake Ryan (Schoeffling) as her 16thbirthday was overshadowed by her sister’s wedding.
Sixteen Candles was a box office hit, earning over $23 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo, and it made stars out of Ringwald, Hall, and more. It was also the directorial debut of Hughes, who would go on to write and produce the ‘80s hits The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and more.
'Sixteen Candles' was written quickly—and with Ringwald in mindHughes wrote the first draft of Sixteen Candles quickly. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Ringwald once said of the filmmaker, “He wrote Sixteen Candles in two days.”
She also shared that Hughes had her in mind for the lead role after seeing her headshot. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Ringwald revealed that she never even had to audition for Hughes.
“I met him, originally, for Sixteen Candles, and as the story goes… he had gotten my picture from a stack of headshots from ICM, and he just had it up on his wall, and he wrote Sixteen Candles over a weekend looking at my picture,” she revealed. “So when it was time to cast it, he cast the girl in the picture. I'm a girl in the picture.”
Ringwald told CBS News that Hughes chose her headshot out of a “giant stack” he received because he liked her face. "And he put it up over his desk and wrote Sixteen Candles, basically over a weekend,” she said.

Hughes, who died in 2009 at age 59, once reflected on his fast-paced screenwriting. In a rare video interview, he explained, “When I start to write a script, I try to get it done as quickly as I can to see if I like the idea, then I go through maybe 25, 30 rewrites, and that rewriting process doesn’t finish until I lock the film, which I do at the last minute.”
“How long it takes me to do a first draft… no I don’t sit there for 12 months because I can’t write dialogue like that,” he added. “I write dialogue as fast as I can say it. Fortunately, I’m a fairly good typist.”
1926 Mystery Writer’s Unexplained Disappearance Is Becoming a Major New Film 100 Years Later
One of the strangest unsolved mysteries in literary history is heading to the big screen nearly 100 years after it first captivated the world.
According to Deadline, Felicity Jones is set to portray legendary mystery writer Agatha Christie in Eleven Missing Days, a new noir thriller centered on the author’s shocking 1926 disappearance. Vincent Cassel will co-star in the film, which is currently in pre-production and expected to begin shooting in the U.K. later this year.
The movie is based on the real-life incident that turned Christie herself into the center of a mystery seemingly pulled from one of her own novels.
In December 1926, Christie vanished from her home in Sunningdale, England, shortly after a devastating personal crisis involving her husband Archie Christie, who had reportedly asked for a divorce after falling in love with another woman. The next morning, Christie’s abandoned car was discovered near a chalk quarry in Surrey with clothes and an expired driver’s license left behind.
The disappearance quickly exploded into international headlines.
More than 1,000 police officers, thousands of volunteers and even airplanes joined the search effort as public fascination intensified. Newspapers covered the story relentlessly, while Sherlock Holmes writer Sir Arthur Conan Doylereportedly consulted a spirit medium in an attempt to help locate Christie using one of her gloves.
For 11 days, nobody knew where the world-famous author had gone.
Christie was eventually discovered alive at a hotel in Harrogate, England, where she had checked in under the surname “Neele” — the same last name as her husband’s mistress. Even after she was found, however, the mystery only deepened.
To this day, debate continues over what really happened during Christie’s disappearance. Some biographers have suggested the author suffered a psychological fugue state or memory loss brought on by emotional trauma and exhaustion. Others have speculated the disappearance may have been a deliberate attempt to embarrass her husband following the collapse of their marriage.
Christie herself never publicly explained the incident in detail and made no mention of it in her autobiography, helping fuel decades of speculation.
The upcoming film appears poised to lean heavily into the mystery surrounding the case. According to Deadline, the movie’s synopsis describes the story as “a case of life imitating art,” where “everyone in her life became a suspect.” Cassel will reportedly play a retired Belgian detective who becomes involved in the investigation, echoing Christie’s iconic detective Hercule Poirot.
The bizarre real-life episode has fascinated historians, readers and Christie fans for generations, partly because it feels so perfectly suited to the kind of stories the author herself became famous for writing.
More than 80 years after "And Then There Were None," "Murder on the Orient Express" and her other classics helped define the mystery genre, Christie’s own unexplained disappearance remains one of the greatest literary whodunits of all time.

Hersheypark Amusement Park Might Remain Closed for Summer Season
Families across the country might be piecing together their vacation plans for the summer season, but if things don't turn out well, any plans involving Hershey, Pennsylvania's iconic Hersheypark might very soon be in jeopardy.
According to Inside the Magic, Hersheypark is currently involved in a high-stakes union dispute which could threaten operations at the busy summer season.
As per the theme park-oriented outlet, Hersheypark is currently slated to open seven days a week beginning May 21. As a result of the ongoing union dispute, however, the park's opening might be delayed to an indefinite time.
The origins of the dispute began on May 7, when a group of over 200 union maintenance workers employed by the park rejected Hershey Entertainment & Resorts' "last, best, and final” contract offer. The contract marked the third offer from the company after months of meticulous negotiations.
This coming week, the union will officially vote over whether or not to go on strike in response to Hershey's final contract offer. As per Inside the Magic, the union workers casting their votes include a variety of integral staff across Hersheypark and its neighboring properties, including ride mechanics, electricians, plumbers, laborers, technicians and carpenters.
The list of demands the union workers cite in their negotiations include several higher wage increases, more affordable healthcare plans and higher pay premiums for certain less-desirable work shifts.
Should a strike take place, it's likely Hershey's shift from weekend-only operations to a full seven-day calendar throughout the summer will be pushed back to a later date.
The union dispute comes at a notably critical time for the iconic 120-year-old theme park property. Along with the arrival of the always-busy summer season, Hershey recently opened a new hotel, the Hershey Inn & Suites. Should the dispute continue, it's almost certain every property within Hershey's Pennsyvlania portfolio will see some degree of impact.
Jennifer Lopez’s Low-Cut Bodycon Dress Torched the Red Carpet
Jennifer Lopez sure knows how to set the red carpet on fire.
The singer and actress, 56, hit the red carpet at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival for "The Roast of Kevin Hart" at The Kia Forum this weekend in Inglewood, California, and torched the fashion competition. Sporting a low-cut bodycon dress in a fire engine red color, the legendary beauty capped off the look with aviator sunglasses and chunky gold jewelry. With her long hair cascading down her back, the "Waiting for Tonight" singer completed the look with a Chanel quilted bag. We can almost guarantee that nobody was looking at Kevin Hart on the red carpet.

Lopez Puts in the Hours at the GymIf you're wondering how Lopez achieves that red carpet body, she definitely puts in the hours at the gym. Back in February, Lopez took to Instagram to share a photo of herself working out. The revealing snap set the Internet on fire thanks to Lopez’s hard-earned body and stunning good looks. With her long hair cascading down her back, the beauty stared at herself in the mirror as she took the picture.
“Keep it simple…,” she captioned the steamy photo, which included a plum-colored workout set revealing her rock-hard abs and voluptuous chest. In the second slide, Lopez featured text from a book that read, “The goal is simple. Better than yesterday. Every. Single. Day.”

It’s May sweeps time, and General Hospital is giving its all, delivering jaw-dropping moments that will have fans talking for months to come.
Friday’s cliffhanger featured Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) learning that Rocco (Finn Carr) shot Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) and Nina (Cynthia Watros), jabbing Jack (Chris McKenna) with a drug that was meant to keep Drew (Cameron Mathison) incapacitated.
This week, May 11-15, 2026, things in Port Charles heat up even more. The latest preview video for the ABC soap reveals fans won’t want to miss a moment of the show.
General Hospital Preview Reveals Nina and Lulu Are In the Hot SeatA sneak peek at General Hospital featured Dante confronting Lulu (Alexa Havins) over Rocco shooting Cullum that night on the pier, not Jason (Steve Burton). In the latest preview video, a very upset Rocco is seen hugging someone, and it’s not his father.
Meanwhile, Lulu comes clean to Dante, who wants to know why he was kept out of the loop. Her emotions are flowing in those scenes.
Nina finds herself on the receiving end of Sidwell’s (Carlo Rotta) wrath after Jack lands in the hospital because of her actions. All Nina wanted to do was save Valentin (James Patrick Stuart), but instead, she put a spotlight on what Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) did to Drew.
Speaking of Drew, since he missed an injection of the drug, he begins to get his body function back, which just might set him free.
Jordan (Tanisha Harper) and Curtis’ (Donnell Turner) car accident drama kicks up a notch, too. Isaiah (Sawandi Wilson) is forced to go on the defensive after DA Turner (Nazneen Contractor) begins targeting him for leaving the accident, even though there is no evidence that it was him.

Rocco clashes with Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) and Charlotte (Bluesy Burke). It has everything to do with the guilt he feels about Danny losing his father because of him.
Several people are put on notice this week, including Laura (Genie Francis), who gets an earful from Tracy (Jane Elliot), and Nina, who gets a warning from Carly (Laura Wright). Valentin must rethink his strategy while Carly attempts to keep Cullum at bay.
The walls are closing in on several people as secrets and lies are close to being exposed in Port Charles.

2001 Thriller Film, Once a Box Office Flop, Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 25 Years Later
A 2001 forgottenJohn Travolta film is making its way back to the charts after being released on Netflix. The film regained popularity last year when streaming on Paramount+, and is now catching the attention of audiences on Netflix's Top 10 list.
There's no denying that the early 2000s had multiple thriller films that weren't a success at the box office compared to others. Some went under the radar and didn't gain any traction, like Travolta's Domestic Disturbance. The 2001 film was directed by Harold Becker and had the Grease star alongside Vince Vaughn, Teri Polo, Steve Buscemi, and Matt O'Leary.
The film is now gaining traction on Netflix after becoming available to stream on the platform over the weekend. It's now ranked at No. 10 on Netflix's Top 10 list, rivaling Bruce Willis'sStriking Distance at No. 9.
Domestic Disturbance became one of Travolta's less-than-favorable films after releasing hits like Face/Off, A Civil Action, and The General's Daughter. The film follows Susan Morrison (Polo), who has recently divorced and plans on marrying a younger and more successful man named Richard Barnes (Vaughn). Their marriage upsets Danny (Matt O'Leary), who is Susan and her ex-husband Frank's 12-year-old son.
After the wedding, Rick begins to show signs of anger and violence, leading Danny to stow away in his truck. Danny soon realizes that Rick isn't who he says he is and warns his father that he might be a murderer. Frank looks for answers to prove his son's claims and hopefully save his family.

Domestic Disturbance was a box-office flop upon its release, having had a budget of $75 million. The film only made back $54.2 million at the domestic box office and worldwide. Critics gave the thriller film bad reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 23% rating and believing it's a "Well-made but extremely predictable, Domestic Disturbance is an average thriller that may work better on TV." Other critics agreed, saying the film was better off being released on TV and felt as if "the studios just aren't even trying."
Some reviews of the film are positive from fans, saying it was "well-acted" and watchable for fans of Travolta. Others felt Domestic Disturbance had just enough thrill and action, with a selling point being Vaughn's ability to tap into a darker, more villainous role.

The Beatles to Open Part of Their History to the Public
The Beatles have announced plans to get back to the place they once belonged--and will open it up to fans to enjoy the experience.
3 Savile Row is a sacred place in the history of the Fab Four, having served as the location of Apple Corps headquarters since 1968, a recording studio, and the famed rooftop where the Beatles performed their final ever public concert documented in the films Let It Be and Get Back.
The new ticketed experience will allow fans to access seven floors of the building with never-before-seen archives and rotating exhibits. Fans will also be able to visit the location’s recreated basement recording studio where Let It Be was recorded, as well as the famed rooftop.
“We’re thrilled to bring Apple Corps back to its spiritual home and give the Beatles fans something truly special. Every single day, fans are taking pictures of the outside of 3 Savile Row – but next year they can go in and explore all seven floors of the iconic building, including the rooftop where even the railings remain the same from that famous day in 1969,” Apple Corps’ CEO Tom Greene said in a statement.
“It was such a trip to get back to 3 Savile Row recently and have a look around. There are so many special memories within the walls, not to mention the rooftop. The team have put together some really impressive plans and I’m excited for people to see it when it’s ready,” Paul McCartney said in a statement.
“Wow, it’s like coming home,” Ringo Starr commented.
Additional details about The Beatles at 3 Savile Row will be announced in the coming months, before the fan experience opens to the public in 2027.
Fans were given a new perspective on the Let It Be sessions via Peter Jackson’s 2021 more in-depth three-part Get Back documentary, which downplayed the bickering and malaise featured in the 1970 Let It Be documentary by Michael Lindsay-Hogg. However, interviews from The Billboard Book of Number One Albums with engineer Glyn Johns and George Harrison confirmed that the Beatles were indeed having problems during the sessions.
“It wasn’t like being in a recording studio with a band making an album,” said Johns, who served as engineer on the bulk of the sessions and was also originally slated to produce the shelved Get Back album. “There were so many other aspects of what they were trying to achieve other than the record, and they went through some pretty serious changes while it was going on. There were some internal problems and external problems while it was going on.”
Harrison explained, “It wasn’t very much fun. Everyone was fed up and everyone wanted to leave the band. Although we salvaged it and we did some good tracks, it generally was done in a depression. It was done in a trough.”
While there may have been some bad times during the making of Let It Be for the band, expect The Beatles at 3 Savile Row to shine a light on the positive aspects of the time the band spent at the location, the music they made there, and their legendary final performance.
’70s Music Icons' 'Wild' Fashion Is Turning Heads After 51 Years
In the mid-1970s, when fashion was all about vibrant, bold and fearless style, Tina Turner and Cher took things to another level and made a headline-grabbing moment on national television.
Decades later, the music icons’ appearance continues to turn heads and spark conversations on social media thanks to their fashion-forward looks.
On April 27, 1975, Tina Turner made a memorable guest appearance on The Cher Show, joining Cher for a high-energy performance of “Shame, Shame, Shame” that instantly became a standout television moment.
During the episode, the duo’s powerful vocals and synchronized choreography were not the only remarkable details, as their iconic outfits also stole the spotlight.
At that time, the Goddess of Pop and the “What’s Love Got to Do With It” hitmaker had a twinning moment after stepping out in a jaw-dropping Bob Mackie ensemble.
The music legends wore a halter dress in vibrant pink, black and turquoise with fringe details that added movement, fun and flair to the overall look.

Fifty-one years later, the episode found a resurgence after the clip sparked buzz on social media.

After 10 Months, This Eight-Part Thriller Based on Stephen King’s 2019 Novel Is Finally Climbing the Streaming Charts
If you haven’t watched The Institute on MGM+, you’re probably not alone, and part of that is due to the streaming platform that it’s on. The eight-part series is based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel of the same name, and it was released in July 2025.
It’s only just climbing the streaming charts, hitting the No. 2 spot for MGM+’s most-streamed movies and shows earlier this month. The only show ahead of it is From, which has just started its fourth season, already has a loyal following, and was highly anticipated.
‘The Institute’ Has Already Been Renewed for Season 2The good news is that if you’re just getting started with the series or if you’ve been on the fence, The Institute Season 2 has already been confirmed by MGM+. While it’s only just climbing the charts, the platform was happy with the original, and the second season is expected to be released in 2026.
The series is considered formulaic, and it’s not going to hook every viewer. However, it’s a clean adaptation of the original source material, and 64% of critics liked it. King was also happy with the series, sharing that it captured the spirit of the original novel.
About the Book ‘The Institute’ by Stephen KingKing’s novel follows a teen genius who wakes up to find himself in a strange place. He’s surrounded by children with various psychic abilities, but there is something much shadier going on. Throughout the thriller, this teen has to figure out who the organization is behind the place only known as The Institute.
The eight-part series stars Ben Barnes, Joe Freeman, and Simone Miller. It was released weekly on MGM+, with the second season confirmed just a day after the Season 1 finale aired. It was originally optioned in 2019 with David E. Kelley adapting it as a limited series. However, within a few years, Benjamin Cavell was announced as writer and executive producer.
1984 Classic Pop Song, Banned by Some Radio Stations, Became a No. 1 Hit
When Madonna released “Like a Virgin” in late 1984, the pop single quickly became one of the most talked-about songs in music.
Some conservative radio stations reportedly banned the track because of its suggestive lyrics and Madonna’s bold public image. Instead of slowing the song down, the controversy helped push it higher on the charts.
Released on Oct. 31, 1984, “Like a Virgin” became Madonna’s first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Dance Club Songs chart on Dec. 15, 1984.
The single also reached No. 1 in Australia, Canada and across Europe, while selling more than six million copies worldwide. The success turned Madonna from a rising singer into a global superstar and helped define pop music in the 1980s.

The song served as the lead single from Madonna’s second studio album, Like a Virgin, which was released on Nov. 12, 1984. Produced by Nile Rodgers, the album later became Madonna’s first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 and eventually sold more than 21 million copies worldwide.
The song sparked debate almost immediately after its release. According to Classical Music, conservative groups criticized the lyrics and accused the song of promoting sex outside marriage. Some radio stations reportedly refused to play it because of Madonna’s provocative image and the song’s suggestive title.
Still, the bans only increased public curiosity. The catchy dance-pop production, paired with Madonna’s playful performance style, made the track impossible to ignore. Music critics praised the song’s hooks, bassline and memorable chorus, while audiences helped turn it into one of the defining songs of the decade.
The music video also became a major part of the song’s success. Directed by Mary Lambert, the video featured Madonna traveling through Venice in a gondola while wearing both a black outfit and a white wedding dress.
One of the song’s biggest moments came during the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. Madonna performed “Like a Virgin” while wearing a wedding dress and emerging from a giant wedding cake. During the performance, she rolled across the stage after losing one of her shoes, creating one of the most unforgettable moments in MTV history.
Over the decades, “Like a Virgin” remained one of Madonna’s most recognized songs. She performed it on several world tours, including the Virgin Tour, Blond Ambition Tour, Confessions Tour, MDNA Tour, Rebel Heart Tour and Celebration Tour.
In 2023, the Library of Congress selected the Like a Virgin album for preservation in the National Recording Registry because of its cultural and historical importance.
More than four decades after its release, “Like a Virgin” remains one of the most influential pop songs ever recorded; a track that survived criticism, radio bans and controversy to become a chart-topping classic.

OnlyFans Models Slam HBO's 'Euphoria' for Recent Controversial Storylines: 'Beyond Troubling'
Viewers might be a tad on the fence about the final season of HBO's Euphoria, but few viewers are as outright hostile to the new season as the OnlyFans creators the show is seemingly satirizing.
According to a new story from Variety, multiple OnlyFans models are up in arms about a new storyline within the show's final season, which heavily revolves around Sydney Sweeney's character Cassie attempting to become an OnlyFans adult content creator.
Above all else, Variety reported that the OnlyFans creators were most upset about the kind of content Cassie was creating for the platform, believing it brought too much "stigma" to the potentially lucrative adults-only service.
In particular, these creators pointed to two controversial scenes which saw Sweeney's character dress up as a dog and a baby, subjects that are strictly off-limits when it comes to the kind of the content OnlyFans allows on their platform.
“There’s just a lot that’s ridiculous and cartoonish about it,” a longtime OnlyFans creator told Variety. "There’s so much that they have her doing that is not even allowed on OnlyFans, and that alone is infuriating: the age-play stuff where she’s dressed as a baby in a diaper, for example. Credit card processors have very strict rules that you have to abide by, and the rules are getting stricter all the time.”
Similarly, Maitland Ward, an OnlyFans creator previously known for her role on the sitcomBoy Meets World, expressed her disappointment at the way the show presented OnlyFans models and the kinds of content they create.
“In the climate we’re in, that they dressed her up as a baby to make pornographic OnlyFans content was beyond troubling and again serves to perpetuate stereotypes that sex workers have no moral compass and that they will do anything for money,” said Ward. “And there’s always this untrue stigma that somehow sex work is synonymous with sex trafficking and abuse. And they just said, let’s make a joke of it. That is so funny. I’m not laughing.”

Bestselling Author’s Novel That Became a 2025 Hit Thriller Ranked Among ‘Most Streamed Audiobooks of All Time’ on Spotify
When it comes to thriller authors, there is one fans adore reading for her iconic twists and turns. Freida McFadden, who recently shared her real name, has gone from self-published to published, and readers cannot get enough. With the success of The Housemaid, it was turned into an epic thriller starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried in 2025, but it’s the novel that drew people in first.
Spotify released its list of most-streamed audiobooks of all time. Granted, the addition of audiobooks on the music streaming platform is relatively new, considering Spotify itself has turned 20, but it doesn’t negate that Premium users have adored the ability to listen to audiobooks easily, and McFadden is on the list.
Freida McFadden Fans Love Listening to ‘The Housemaid’While there’s no doubt that fantasy and romantasy are among the most popular on Spotify, The Housemaid by McFadden sits in a respectable ninth position out of the 20 on the list. It is the highest ranking thriller book on the list, with another of her books, The Boyfriend, also on the list in 18th place.
It’s not surprising that this novel ended up becoming one of the most streamed in 2025. The movie was released at the end of the year, with plenty of hype surrounding it in the run-up. This was one of those twisty thrillers that leaves you guessing until the end, especially as you learn the truth of Nina Winchester’s actions.
The Housemaid is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 73% critic score. The audience was even more impressed, rating it 93%.
‘The Housemaid’ Makes You Question the Charming GuyThis was arguably the novel that put McFadden on the map. Sure, she had some excellent hits before that as a self-published author, but it was The Housemaid that made people sit up and listen. It’s her first to be made into a movie, with the sequel also getting the movie treatment. McFadden’s upcoming novel, The Divorce, is also going to be turned into a movie.
Throughout the thriller, we’re left wondering what is going on with Nina Winchester. Sweeney’s Milly Calloway gets a second chance in life when she lands the job as the live-in housemaid at the Winchester house. Everything seems to be perfect, but then things with Nina change, as she starts accusing Milly of breaking things, messing up dates, and more.
While it looks like Nina is trying to damage Milly’s reputation, there is something much bigger going on. Sadly, Milly doesn’t realize it until it’s a little too late.
1974 Hit Film, Given a Darker Ending After Bitter Feud, Ranked Among Greatest Films of All Time
In 1974, director Roman Polanski and screenwriter Robert Towne famously battled over the ending of Chinatown, but the darker conclusion they ultimately landed on helped turn the neo-noir into one of the most acclaimed films in Hollywood history.
Released in June 1974, Chinatown starred Jack Nicholson as private investigator J.J. “Jake” Gittes alongside Faye Dunaway and John Huston. Set against a backdrop of corruption, greed and water-rights scandals in 1930s Los Angeles, the film became a critical sensation and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made. The American Film Institute ranked it No. 19 on its list of the 100 Greatest Films of All Time, while AFI also named it the second-greatest mystery film ever made, second only to the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock classic Vertigo.
But two of the movie’s defining elements nearly looked completely different.
Towne originally envisioned a far more hopeful ending in which Evelyn Mulwray (Dunaway) survived and the villains faced consequences; he also didn't think Mulwray and Gittes should become romantically involved. Polanski strongly disagreed on both counts, believing the film needed a bleaker conclusion to stand apart from a more traditional Hollywood thriller. According to Turner Classic Movies, the dispute became one of the most famous creative clashes of 1970s filmmaking.
Polanski later explained exactly why he fought for the darker ending
“I was alone in wanting Gittes and Evelyn Mulwray to go to bed together, and Towne and I couldn't agree on an ending. Towne wanted the evil tycoon to die and his daughter, Evelyn, to live. He wanted a happy ending; all would turn out okay for her after a short spell in jail. I knew that if Chinatown was to be special, not just another thriller where the good guys triumph in the final reel, Evelyn had to die."
The disagreement went beyond the ending itself. Polanski reportedly felt Towne’s original screenplay was too sprawling and demanded major cuts and rewrites before filming began. In his autobiography, Polanski said the script “simply couldn't have been filmed as it stood.”
Towne eventually acknowledged that Polanski’s instincts had been correct, even though the darker ending initially frustrated him. The devastating final scene, which ends with the now-iconic line “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown,” became central to the film’s legacy and helped cement its cynical, morally ambiguous tone.
The screenplay itself had already attracted attention long before production began. Towne loosely based the story on real corruption scandals connected to California water rights during the early 20th century, blending political greed with deeply personal tragedy. Producer Robert Evans reportedly purchased the screenplay based only on Towne’s one-line story pitch before the writer spent roughly 18 months developing the script into a finished screenplay.
Production on the film was often tense. Polanski clashed repeatedly with cast and crew members, including Dunaway and even Nicholson at times. Nicholson later admitted of the director, “He's an irritating person whether he's making a movie or not making a movie.”
Despite the friction behind the scenes, the finished movie earned 11 Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Towne’s screenplay. Critics praised the film’s haunting atmosphere and bleak worldview, which many felt reflected the growing distrust and Watergate-era cynicism of the 1970s.
More than 50 years later, Chinatown continues to influence crime thrillers and neo-noir films, while its unforgettable ending remains one of the most discussed conclusions in movie history.

61 Years Ago Today, Original Nepo Baby Made Her Broadway Debut
It's hard to imagine not being interested in Broadway if your mother was Judy Garland. Liza Minnelliunsurprisingly carved her own place in musical history. It all started on May 11, 1965.
Liza Minnelli Debuted in 'Flora, the Red Menace'The musical "Flora, the Red Menace" takes place in 1935, and newly graduated Flora Meszaros (Minnelli) pursues a job in fashion in New York City. She also meets a stuttering artist named Harry Toukarian (Bob Dishy). They get involved with an artists' co-operative, but her political views get tested with her career changes.

Minnelli was 19 when she started the role. She revealed that she overheard a woman singing a song, and asked her where it was from. The answer was John Kander and Fred Ebb's first musical. The icon was determined to get the lead role in it, although she already had a job on Broadway.
"I had to audition seven times!" she told Playbill. "The first time I auditioned George Abbott was out in the theatre. I walked down and I heard him say, 'Well, this is a waste of time,' but I kept walking down and then I just kept coming back. And finally, I got it!"
That determination paid off, and she earned her first Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. Minnelli later starred in Cabaret, another Kander and Ebb musical. The actress was awarded an Oscar for Best Actress.
The Tony winner is 80 years old. She released a memoir this year called
Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! She wrote about how her role as Flora changed the public's perception of her.
" I was the original 'nepo baby'," she wrote, according to The Times. "Now, at last, I had my own identity."

‘Harry Potter’ Actors of the Past and Present Come Together in Special Red Carpet Encounter
With the BAFTA Television Awards in full swing at the Royal Festival Hall in London, two Harry Potter stars of the past and present had a fun encounter on the red carpet.
Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the early 2000s Harry Pottermovies, embraced the Wizarding World’s new Draco Malfoy, Lox Pratt, who will be replacing Tom Felton in HBO’s upcoming series.

Pratt, 14, recently played Jack in Netflix’s Lord of the Flies. His character is arrogant and privileged, similar to Draco in Harry Potter. However, Pratt told Variety that the characters differ.
“I think they’re two very different kinds of sadness and meanness,” Pratt said. “Draco’s loved, but he’s got this horrible, crippling family pressure. He’s not quite who he wants to be the entire time and can’t live up to his father’s expectations. Whereas I felt with Jack that he got his own thing going on. He’s just unloved and that’s never been a thing that he’s needed.”
Pratt told Variety that he enjoys playing “baddies.”
“Baddies are just more fun to play — and there’s just so much more you can do,” Pratt said. “It’s better than being stuck playing the good guy forever.”
The teaser trailer for the upcoming Harry Potter series was recently released, and Pratt said he got a “flood of messages” after it came out, with friends showing their enthusiasm for his new role. He said he’s excited for people to see it, “because he’s so different to how Draco was in the films.”
The role of Draco’s father, Lucius, will be played by Johnny Flynn. Isaacs took to X last year to praise Flynn for his acting, expressing that he’s excited to pass the torch of Lucius onto him.
“A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too,” Isaacs said. “Couldn’t have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better.”
Check out the teaser trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonehere.
