1968 George Harrison-Scored Psychedelic Film Premiered 58 Years Ago Today

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 10:24pm

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is officially underway, with a few movies already firing off with impressive standing ovations.

Exactly 58 years ago, a uniquely psychedelic project premiered at the festival and had some serious star power attached. The Beatles guitarist George Harrison had composed the soundtrack for Wonderwall — not to be confused with the iconic Oasis song, of course, which came decades later. Here's the film's official synopsis offered by Rotten Tomatoes:

"Absent-minded professor Oscar Collins (Jack MacGowran), studying in his charmless apartment, is bothered by loud music from the flat next door. Peeking through a tiny crack in the wall, he discovers a gorgeous young model, Penny Lane (Jane Birkin), and becomes obsessed with her and her swinging hippie lifestyle. In surreal fantasy sequences, he imagines doing battle with Penny's gauche photographer boyfriend (Iain Quarrier) for her hand. George Harrison provides the period soundtrack."

Harrison, who died in 2001 at age 58, released the film's soundtrack in 1968 as Wonderwall Music, his debut solo studio album. It was also the first solo album released by a member of The Beatles and the first LP to be released by Apple Records.

The mostly instrumental LP is described by Harrison's official website as an intricate, vibrant tapestry of Western rock music and compositions in an Indian classical style.

"I decided to do it as a mini-anthology of Indian music, because I wanted to help turn the public on to Indian music," the renowned musician once said in 1992, per his website.

Harrison was in the spotlight last month when his sister's Illinois house — where he once stayed in 1963, before The Beatles were selling out stadiums — went on the market for $105,000. Fans of the iconic band were afraid the special home at 113 McCann Street will be torn down by new owners. Grady Adams, the property’s current owner, was renting it out as apartments but has decided to sell.

Shakira Makes Announcement on Official World Cup Song

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 10:02pm

Shakira has officially unveiled “Dai Dai,” the official song for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking her return to the global football stage more than a decade after the success of “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” in 2010.

The new anthem features Nigerian Afrofusion star Burna Boy and was released on Thursday across major streaming platforms and YouTube.

The Colombian superstar revealed the track with a social media post featuring a promotional poster of herself alongside Burna Boy. On Instagram, she wrote: “Dai Dai is here. The FIFA World Cup 2026 starts now!”

The nearly four-minute song mixes Afrobeats, dance-pop, reggaetón and world music influences while celebrating football culture and global unity. FIFA described the track as “a vibrant celebration of football, culture and unity.”

“Dai dai” is an Italian expression meaning “come on” or “let’s go,” and the song reflects that message throughout its multilingual chorus. Lyrics are delivered in English and Spanish, while phrases in Italian, French and Japanese are also included to highlight the international spirit of the tournament.

View this post on Instagram

The anthem follows a motivational theme focused on perseverance and achievement. In one part of the chorus, Shakira sings: “All the highs and lows/All the tears and the pain/You been there through it all/Been through it all/Just do it again.”

Burna Boy joins her on the uplifting hook as the pair encourage listeners to keep pushing forward. The song also honors some of football’s most famous names, including Pelé, Diego Maradona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

“Dai Dai” marks the second time Shakira has recorded an official FIFA World Cup song. Her 2010 anthem “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” became one of the most recognized World Cup songs ever released and remains a favorite among football fans worldwide.

The song was teased earlier this month through a video filmed at the iconic Maracanã Stadium in Brazil. FIFA later confirmed the track as the official anthem for the tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament begins on June 11 at Estadio Azteca and concludes on July 19 at MetLife Stadium, which will be renamed New York New Jersey Stadium during the games.

Shakira is also set to co-headline the tournament’s first-ever halftime show at the final alongside Madonna and BTS.

Meanwhile, Burna Boy continues to expand his international success following platinum hits such as “Last Last” and “Ye.” The Nigerian artist recently released his album “No Sign of Weakness” and also contributed music to the upcoming “F1” movie soundtrack.

With “Dai Dai,” FIFA appears to be aiming for another global anthem that can unite football fans before the 2026 tournament officially kicks off.

Best-Selling Novel Called ‘Darkly Hilarious’ Is Suddenly Everywhere

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 9:57pm

One of the year’s biggest literary sensations is a darkly funny novel about a social media influencer trapped in the brutal realities of the 1800s.

Caro Claire Burke’s debut novel "Yesteryear" has rapidly become a publishing phenomenon since its April release, earning spots on the New York Times bestseller list, landing a Good Morning America Book Club selection and generating intense online discussion across BookTok and Goodreads communities.

Related: Best-Selling Novel Ranked Among Goodreads Favorite Historical Fiction Still Captivates Readers

Barnes & Noble recently described the novel as a “darkly hilarious tale,” praising the book as “an electrifying debut novel about the unraveling of a lifestyle influencer” and “a sharp commentary on family, faith and fame.”

The novel follows Natalie Heller Mills, a wildly successful “tradwife” influencer whose carefully curated online life suddenly collapses when she wakes up in what appears to be 1855 America. Gone are the hidden producers, industrial kitchens and polished Instagram posts that helped build her empire. Instead, Natalie finds herself trapped in a physically exhausting world of farm labor, rigid gender expectations and isolation.

What begins as satire slowly transforms into something far darker and more psychologically unsettling.

Part of the novel’s appeal comes from how sharply it taps into modern conversations surrounding influencer culture, traditional gender roles and the commercialization of online identity. Burke herself has previously discussed tradwife culture on TikTok and co-hosts the culture and politics podcast Diabolic Lies, experiences that helped shape the novel’s themes.

In a new interview with Variety, Burke admitted that Natalie’s complicated relationship with social media mirrors some of her own experiences online.

“Natalie’s relationship to social media, in many ways, is my relationship to social media,” Burke said. “I can feel out of control, I can feel paranoid, I can feel defensive.”

Burke also revealed she never expected the novel to explode the way it has since publication.

“I had no expectation of making the New York Times bestseller list at all,” she told Variety. “I was really hopeful that this would be a book that a number of people read and that it would be enough for me to sell another book.”

Instead, "Yesteryear" quickly became one of the most talked-about books of the spring, with readers praising its mix of satire, horror, social commentary and psychological suspense.

Critics have also embraced the novel’s sharp tone. "The Maid" author Nita Prose called the book “a bold and biting satire” that “will have you cackling and gasping right to the final page.”

The success has already sparked a major Hollywood adaptation. Amazon MGM acquired the film rights, with Anne Hathaway attached to star and produce. Burke recently said the adaptation is expected to remain “faithful” to the novel.

The book’s sudden rise also reflects the growing fascination surrounding tradwife culture and nostalgic Americana aesthetics in entertainment and social media. Burke herself acknowledged that fascination while discussing the book’s themes with Variety.

“We’re going through a reactionary time period,” Burke said. “It’s very Americana—very looking backwards instead of looking forwards.”

For many readers, "Yesteryear" works because it balances timely cultural commentary with an addictive, propulsive story that constantly shifts beneath the surface.

And judging by the book’s rapid bestseller rise, readers can’t stop talking about it.

Fans Say Taylor Swift Was 'Possessed' by an Old Era in 'Gorgeous' New Date Night Look

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 9:55pm

Taylor Swift looked every bit the blast from the past on Friday night when she stepped out for dinner in New York City with her beau, Travis Kelce.

The global superstar kept things casual in a floral boho-style dress with soft yellows, blues and greens, with her wavy hair swept back and her bangs styled in a swoop across her forehead—a style she often embraced during her late teens and early twenties.

The "Long Story Short" singer looked positively folklorian in Dôen's Ashlynn Floral Organic Cotton Voile Midi Dress, which retailed for $348 but is sold out, Aquazzura's Twist Sandal 95 in beige, which retails for $920, and what appears to be Self Portrait's Raffia Bow Charm Shoulder Bag, which goes for $314.

Fans online gushed over the soft, fairytale style, with one declaring that "that dress looks gorgeous on her" alongside a gif implying that the singer was keeping her fans fed with all of the new photos that have dropped this month.

Some fans felt the look served as a callback to some of her earlier eras, with one writing, "speak now possessed her omg," and another declaring, "This is giving debut," which, of course, many listeners are still holding out hope to hear Taylor's Version of, speculating that it may release later this year in honor of the album's 20th anniversary, as Swift previously hinted that it had been rerecorded when she regained ownership of her masters.

And, of course, fans hoped for an affordable way to recreate the look, with one lamenting, "i need a cheap dupe of this dress so bad 😭." Luckily, one fan dedicated to tracking down Swift's outfits found a similar style available for just $29.99 at H&M.

Swift has been spotted all around Manhattan lately, including for dinner at The Eight Six in the West Village, Via Carota for Lena Dunham‘s 40th birthday, and Zero Bond—a members-only NoHo club with workspaces, restaurants, bars and conference rooms. Her peplum business casual look earned high praise from fans for the "effortless elegance."

Amazon’s 'Sturdy' and 'Spacious' Raised Garden Bed Is Over 50% Off Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 9:15pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Spring may be winding down, but there's still time to get your garden going before the summer heat sets in. If your yard could use a designated spot for plants, a raised planter bed is one of the most effective ways to successfully grow vegetables and flowers. The right planter can help improve soil quality, reduce weeds, and make tending to your garden much easier — and Amazon has an outstanding option on sale ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

The Snugniture Galvanized Raised Garden Bed is now up to 52% off during Amazon's Memorial Day Sale. Normally $50, you can snag the 4-foot-by-2-foot oval planter in a brown woodgrain finish for just $24. For just a few dollars more, the green color is priced at $25, while the silver and white versions are $26.

This spacious garden bed is made from durable galvanized metal coated with a rust-resistant finish. The 8-square-foot space is ideal for growing tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, strawberries, flowers, or a mix of herbs and vegetables in a compact footprint. The sides feature protective rubber weatherstripping around the edge, and at just under a foot tall, it's easy to reach your plants without bending over.

Ideal for supporting plant growth, the open-bottom design allows for easy drainage, so your plants don't succumb to root rot from overwatering. When placed on grass or soil, the design allows roots to reach deeper into the ground to obtain natural nutrients. However, it could just as easily be used on a patio, deck, or balcony with a garden bed liner underneath.

Multiple reviewers said this garden bed was "easy to assemble" with all tools included, taking an hour on average to screw all of the 10 iron sheet panels together. As a bonus, gloves are included to help you grip the pieces during assembly. Some shoppers mentioned that pulling the protective plastic film off the panels was a bit tedious.

"They make gardening fun again, and are so simple to maintain once installed," a shopper said. "They have also made it easier to keep everything evenly watered." Several reviewers mentioned buying multiple beds because they were so impressed with the "excellent drainage."

’90s Rock Band, With Classic Radio Anthem, Ranked Among 'Best Supergroups' of All Time

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 8:46pm

In the early 1990s, an all-star rock band dominated the charts and later cemented its legacy as one of the “best supergroups” of all time.

BBC Music named the top 23 best rock supergroups, with Temple of the Dog ranking in the top 10.

The group was formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington and featured core members from notable bands including Audioslave and Soundgarden. Chris Cornell served as lead vocalist while former Mother Love Bone and later Pearl Jam members Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar and Jeff Ament on bass, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready on lead guitar and Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron on drums completed the lineup.

Cornell, who was the conceptual force and founder of the rock band, launched the group as a tribute to his late friend and roommate Andrew Wood, the frontman of Mother Love Bone, who passed away from an overdose.

With his love and devotion for a dear friend, the vocalist created a supergroup known for its powerful music and the classic radio anthem “Hunger Strike.”

Released in 1991 as the lead single from their self-titled debut album, the song was a major hit and is considered an iconic grunge anthem of the era.

Cornell was joined by then-unknown Eddie Vedder for a duet, sparking Temple of the Dog into a mainstream breakthrough in the summer of 1992.

Although the band did not achieve the immediate breakthrough, the supergroup found commercial success with “Hunger Strike,” which peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock and No. 1 on the US Billboard Modern Rock charts while also cracking the top 50 in Canada and the top 60 in the U.K.

The delayed success also helped their debut album surpass 1 million copies in sales and earn a Platinum certification from the RIAA.

View this post on Instagram

In a previous interview, Cornell recalled how the famous duet was formed due to pure coincidence.

At the time, Vedder, who had just arrived in Seattle for his first rehearsal, stepped up after noticing the frontman’s struggle to reach a vocal part.

“I feel this shadow presence over my shoulder,” the lead vocalist told Pearl Jam Twenty, as cited by Louder, adding , “And there’s only one mic, and the chorus comes around again, and he sort of moves his shoulder in just to let me know he’s got a plan. And I don’t know him. We had said hi… So he hit the “Going hungry,” I sang the high part and then he hit it again. All of a sudden, a lightbulb went off in my head and I thought, ‘Fuck, his voice sounds incredible in that deep register.’”

With Vedder and Cornell singing together, they made the song a powerhouse single, prompting A&M Records to re-promote the track, fueling renewed attention and it eventually became a classic radio anthem.

Patrick Dempsey and Noah Wyle's New Red Carpet Photo Breaks the Internet

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 8:38pm

An internet-breaking meeting has sent fans of The Pitt and Grey's Anatomy spiraling after a new photo of Noah Wyle and Patrick Dempsey surfaced following WBTV's 2026 Upfronts.

The pair took a moment to pose for the photographer during a celebratory event at the Ritz-Carlton in New York City earlier this week, with Dempsey looking sleek in an all-black suit over a black polo, and Wyle draped in a powder blue button-up underneath a black button-up sweater.

A fan account dedicated to the ER alum shared their meeting on X, setting fans all atwitter over the two iconic TV doctors posing together.

"McDreamy met McDepressy," the user captioned the photo, referencing the nickname the interns gave Dr. Derek Shepherd in the early seasons of Grey's Anatomy. And, of course, Wyle's character, Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch, spent this season of The Pitt on a progressive downward spiral, leaving his colleagues—and viewers—concerned that the character may not survive his apparent mental health crisis.

While the nickname may feel a little too real to some, it sent stans rolling on the social media platform, with one quickly responding, "This caption is insane 🤣🤣🤣🤣."

"The McDepressy sent me," another admitted, as someone else called the post the "Best thing I saw today 😂."

And, of course, many thirsted over the beloved faux practitioners, with one quipping, "I would let them do McSurgery on me."

"mis PAPÁS," another declared.

"i need to scream about this to someone," a third wrote, lamenting the fact that none of their friends have seen both The Pitt and Grey's.

"Thank you God. Im not worthy but thank you 🤤," someone else praised.

"They look like they could easily be siblings," another fan suggested, and, if nothing else, we'd have to agree that they do happen to share the exact same nose. Perhaps Season 3 could see a visit from Dr. Robby's long-lost brother, swooping in to save the day—or drive him even more mad.

Tiffany Trump Celebrates Her Son’s 1st Birthday, ‘You Make Our Life So Bright’

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 8:35pm

Donald Trump’s grandson just celebrated his first birthday, and Tiffany Trump is sharing her little guy’s bday pictures.

Alexander Trump Boulos turned one on May 15, and judging by mom Tiffany’s Instagram post, the toddler enjoyed every moment of his big day. Trump (Tiffany, that is) shared an absolutely adorable carousel of pictures, including a black and white mommy-son selfie, several family snapshots, the birthday boy doing what toddlers do in a ball pit, a video of party playtime, a precious portrait with grandma, Marla Maples, and a cute clip of the tot enjoying a slice of cake.

View this post on Instagram

The proud parent also included a special message to her little one, writing, “Happy 1st Birthday to the love of our lives! ATB, you make our life so bright!”

Who Is Tiffany Trump’s Husband?

More than a few of the birthday photos include both of Alexander’s parents—Tiffany and her husband, Michael Boulos. So, who is the President’s son-in-law?

As it turns out, Tiffany isn’t the only child of a wealthy father in this family. Even though her husband’s dad isn’t exactly the Commander-In-Chief, he is a prominent Lebanese businessman. The 28-year-old grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, where his family operates several companies, including Boulos Enterprises and SCOA Nigeria.

The pair reportedly met atLindsay Lohan’s beach club in Mykonos, Greece, and made their relationship official in 2019. Two years later, in 2021, Tiffany announced their engagement with a sweet Instagram post, saying, “It has been an honor to celebrate many milestones, historic occasions, and create memories with my family here at the White House, none more special than my engagement to my amazing fiancé Michael!”

Trump and Boulos tied the knot in 2022. Her famous family, including Donald Trump, mom Marla Maples, sisterIvanka Trump, and brothers Donald Jr., Eric, andBarron Trump, attended the wedding in Palm Beach, Florida (of course, at her father’s Mar-a-Lago Club).

When Did Tiffany Trump Announce Her Pregnancy?

Tiffany announced her pregnancy on New Year’s Eve of 2024. Trump posted a collection of pics from a beach vacation on Instagram, adding, “Swipe to see why we are so excited” to the caption. Along with the sand-and-sea shots, the soon-to-be mom included an ultrasound with the message “Coming 2025) from December 2nd.

Forget about a basic birthday party. This family knows how to celebrate! Little ATB (who is wearing a monogrammed onesie) had a ball pit and balloon arch in a coordinating blue, brown, and white color palette. The video of the event also shows off a giant number one balloon, an oversized bow, and tons of teddy bears. And really, what one-year-old could ask for anything more?

By day, these solar lights bring a colorful decorative touch to garden beds, pathways, and patios. At night, they emit a soft, color-changing glow that makes outdoor spaces feel warm and inviting, whether you’re entertaining guests or relaxing outside on a summer evening. One shopper said they loved the lights so much they bought multiple sets, calling them “pretty in the daytime but extra pretty at night.”

Each light runs on a solar panel that fully charges in about five to six hours of sunlight, and they glow for up to eight hours after sunset. The lights automatically switch on at dusk and off at dawn, but there’s also a manual on/off option if you want more control. Plus, they’re completely wire-free and waterproof with an IP65 rating, so you can place them almost anywhere outside — including around ponds or water features. One reviewer even wrote that “they are beautiful in plants around our pond at night.”

One customer shared that neighbors regularly stopped by to admire how the lights slowly change colors, adding that they planned to order even more sets. Another reviewer described them as “beautiful,” adding that they brought color to the garden.

1982 No. 1 Duet, Ranked Among 'Best Party Songs Ever Made,' Has One of the Catchiest Choruses of the Decade

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 8:26pm

If you're a karaoke fan, then you know there are certain songs that get played more than others: "Sweet Caroline," "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Livin' on a Prayer," just to name a few. Of course, duets are always popular karaoke picks, too, and one of the most time-honored choices would have to be "Don't You Want Me" by the Human League, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.

Written by Human League founder Phil Oakey, "Don't You Want Me" was initially inspired by a photo-story in a teen magazine (presumably about a cocktail waitress). Oakey didn't originally mean for the song to be a duet, but after watching the James Mason version of A Star Is Born he decided to turn it into a conversation of sorts.

Since keyboard players Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh had left the band to form Heaven 17, Oakey hired a pair of teenage singers to take their place. One of them, Susan Ann Sulley, took the female part in "Don't You Want Me."

As Oakley told Variety in April 2026, he didn't expect "Don't You Want Me" to be a hit.

"We were on a circuit with Joy Division and everything and we thought that our long-term appeal would be a bit moodier than that," he explained.

"So when that song sort of formed itself, which is what they seem to do, I was a little bit shocked," Oakley said. "As usual, the radio people called it right and we took the LP out to radio and they all said that’s the single, release that, and being daft punks we took a while to realize that. I think Joanne [Catherall] and Susan knew straight away. They’re cleverer than me anyway."

'Don't You Want Me' is still in-demand for TV and movies

"Don't You Want Me," of course, went on to be the Human League's signature song. Time Out New York ranked it among the "Best Party Songs Ever Made," praising the track's "sauropod-size synth riffs" and the "chorus’s devastatingly effective vocal hook" while pointing out that it's a "bit strange that ‘Don’t You Want Me’ has become one of the world’s most played party tunes: Lyrically, it’s the rather depressing tale of a gal who’s outgrown a guy, and a guy who implies (somewhat disturbingly) that something bad will happen if the gal doesn’t come back. Probably best to gloss over the lyrics and enjoy that enormous chorus."

All these years later, Oakley said he still gets more requests to use "Don't You Want Me" more than any other song, though said the band tries to be a "bit careful not to overuse it."

In 2024, the frontman shared a humble take on Human League's successful career with Music Radar, saying, “We’re not musicians. We never trained."

"We’ve managed to continue as a band by always just feeling lucky about everything we’ve ever done," he continued. "I have never been the greatest songwriter in this group. I’ve never been the best singer in this group. I’m not a very good frontman or anything, we just do our best and hope that the audience will fill in the rest.”

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Ranked Among the ‘Best Books of the 21st Century’ Was Once Banned

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 8:11pm

More than 20 years after its release, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time continues to resonate with readers around the world.

The internationally bestselling novel by Mark Haddon was recently included on Goodreads' list of the best books of the 21st century based on user votes, further cementing the book's reputation as one of the most influential literary works of its era.

Originally published in 2003, the novel follows 15-year-old Christopher Boone, a mathematically gifted teenager with Asperger's Syndrome who sets out to investigate the mysterious death of a neighbor's dog. What begins as a small local mystery gradually expands into a deeply emotional story about family, trust and independence.

One reason the novel stood out so dramatically upon release was its distinctive narrative voice. Told entirely from Christopher's perspective, the book offered readers an intensely personal and unconventional view of the world that felt unlike most contemporary fiction at the time.

"As it happens, when I was putting Christopher together I drew upon a long list of beliefs, habits, quirks and behaviours which I borrowed from friends and acquaintances and members of my own family," Haddon told Penguin. "Which is only to say that Christopher is not that different from the rest of us. It’s the number and combination of his eccentricities which cause him difficulties."

The novel quickly became both a critical and commercial success, winning major literary awards and becoming a staple in classrooms and book clubs around the world.

At the same time, however, the book also faced its share of controversy.

Over the years, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has appeared on lists of frequently challenged or banned books in some schools and libraries, often due to language, mature themes and discussions surrounding its content, namely perceived references to atheism.

"Christopher is completely unaware of the offence that swearing is intended to cause and therefore it simply washes over him," Haddon told The Guardian of the novel's naive protagonist. He suggests some degree of hypocrisy in regard to critics of the book's contents. "No-one has ever complained that the book is about a mother abandoning her son or that it contains a scene in which a father hits his son."

Despite those challenges, the novel's popularity only continued to grow.

Its cultural impact expanded even further when the story was adapted into a highly acclaimed stage production. The theatrical version premiered in London before transferring to Broadway, where it earned widespread praise for its innovative visual staging and emotional performances.

The production went on to win multiple major theater awards, helping introduce the story to entirely new audiences beyond readers of the novel itself.

More than two decades later, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time remains a defining modern classic, one celebrated for its emotional depth, originality and willingness to tell a deeply human story from a perspective rarely seen in mainstream fiction.

Its inclusion among Goodreads' best books of the century reflects just how lasting that impact has become.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to completely change the feel of your bedroom is just by swapping out your bedding. It's kind of mind-blowing how something as simple as sheets, a comforter or a duvet can totally transform your space. One day, you're leaning into cozy rustic farmhouse with soft neutrals and classic textures, and the next, you're all about elegant cottagecore with florals, ruffles and romantic little details. It's a personality shift for your room without the commitment of repainting walls or buying all new furniture.

That's exactly why I'm such a fan of keeping a few bedding sets in rotation. Not enough to have my linen closet staging a full-on rebellion every time I open it, but definitely enough to keep my options open when I'm craving a refresh. Sometimes you just want your room to feel different, you know? A seasonal switch-up can do wonders and, currently, I'm fully in my floral era because I found an absolutely gorgeous bedding set at Kohl's that's giving soft, elegant and utterly charming.

1984 Hit Ballad Ranked Among 'Greatest Car Songs of All Time' Asks a Heartbreaking Six-Word Question

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 7:56pm

Sometimes a band's biggest hit doesn't sound all that much like the rest of their other music. A perfect example? "Drive" by the Cars. Released as the third single from the group's 1984 album Heartbeat City, the ballad became their highest-charting track, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and going all the way to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart...all while sounding "like nothing else the band ever did," as critic Brian Kachejian of Classic Rock History pointed out.

“'Drive' is the outlier in the band’s catalog," Kachejian wrote, going on to add that the "video that came out with the song was stunning."

Indeed, anyone who grew up watching MTV in the '80s will remember the video for "Drive" as a standout. Starring model Paulina Porizkova, who was just 19 years old at the time (and later married Cars frontman Ric Ocasek), the video shows a young woman in the throes of an emotional breakdown — making it a perfect illustration of the tune's tragic theme.

Sung by Cars bassist Benjamin Orr, the lyrics were written by Ocasek:

"Who's gonna hold you down / When you shake? / Who's gonna come around / When you break? / You can't go on, thinkin' / Nothin's wrong, but bye / Who's gonna drive you home, tonight?"

Andrew Unterberger of Billbooard ranked the song among the "Best Car Songs of All Time" (meaning the automobile, not the band).

“'Who’s gonna drive you home tonight?' All the history, intimacy, trust and distance of a relationship in one six-word question from motorist to passenger," Unterberger wrote.

'Drive' was a major influence on Paul McCartney

Fans weren't the only ones who fell in love with "Drive."

As Paul McCartney told The Washington Post in 2017, the song had a huge influence on his sixth solo studio album, Press to Play.

"Sometimes you get caught up in trying to be the current flavor, trying to go along and flavor your cooking with the food of the month, and I think Press to Play was certainly that," the former Beatle explained.

"I remember the records I listened to," he continued. "'Let's Dance.' Or 'Drive' by the Cars. Records that were of the time and I probably just thought, "Yeah, it'd be quite nice to get into a bit of that."

All these years later, people are still listening: At the time of this writing, the song has been streamed 569,851,636 times on Spotify alone.

When it comes to sneakers, flats, and sandals that can actually keep up with your day (and still look cute doing it), Dr. Scholl’s has been a go-to for decades. The brand built its name on comfort-first design — think cushioned insoles, lightweight materials, and contoured footbeds. Whether you're commuting, running errands, or on your feet all day, they'll deliver every time.

What’s a little less common? Scoring a major deal on them. That’s where Nordstrom Rack comes in clutch. Right now, the Dr. Scholl’s Wexley Mary Jane Ballet Flat is down to just $35 — a cool 56% off its original $80 price tag — which is a rare, blink-and-you-miss-it price your shoe rack (and wallet) can get behind.

This design keeps the classic single-strap shape of the Mary Jane intact, but the clean lines and minimalist construction make them feel much more elevated and current than traditional schoolgirl styles. The adjustable buckle not only enhances the vintage-inspired look but also allows for a more secure, customizable fit across the midfoot.

Available in both faux suede and faux leather finishes, the shoe can shift aesthetically depending on the texture. Suede styles look softer and more relaxed, while the smoother leather-look versions lean polished and city-chic. The anti-slip outsole with a 0.3-inch lift in the heel is lightweight and flexible, designed to move naturally with the foot instead of feeling stiff or rigid, making them especially great for all-day wear.

Comfort-wise, these are built to be much more wearable than the average fashion flat. Inside, the anti-odor insole includes cushioning and supportive comfort technology, along with 15% plant-based foam that gives the shoe a more responsive, cushioned feel underfoot. The shoe's exterior and portions of the fabric lining are also partially made from recycled water bottles, adding a more sustainability-minded element to the style.

The black style with a gold buckle is also offered in a wide width, providing an extra fit option.

Shoppers had plenty to say about these “super cute” and “supportive” flats in the review section, with many describing them as “stylish,” “chic,” and “easy to wear.” One reviewer shared, “They’re lightweight, and the material feels soft yet durable," noting that "the craftsmanship is impressive" with "no rubbing or pinching.”

Why Sigourney Weaver Won't Do a Sequel to 'One of My Favorite Movies'

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 7:38pm

Many celebrities are revisiting their previous movies and franchises through sequels. Sigourney Weaver continues her sci-fi movie run with Avatar, Star Wars, and Alien. But there is one of her favorite movies outside the genre that she won't be revisiting.

Sigourney Weaver Won't Do a Sequel to 'Heartbreakers'

The 2001 movie Heartbreakers follows a mother (Weaver) and daughter (Jennifer Love Hewitt) who target wealthy men as con artists. The mother, Angela, marries a wealthy man, and the daughter, Wendy, would set him up to cheat. That allows Angela to divorce and get a settlement.

"It's such a great story—it’s one of my favorite movies," Weaver, 76, told E! News. "I can't imagine not having our original team together."

The late Gene HackmanRayLiotta, and Anne Bancroft were also in the comedy. The actress can't see doing a sequel without them. "I'm so glad Jennifer remembers it with as much affection as I do because I'm very proud of it," Weaver said.

Hackman played a target named William B. Tensy, who constantly smoked. That's apparently far from Hackman's lifestyle.

" You know, he'd never smoked before," Weaver told Cinema. "And then to play a chain smoker in Heartbreakers, even the first day, his smoker's cough, the way he held the cigarette, everything. I mean, I don't know how much work Gene did beforehand, probably none. But his commitment is so strong, that he just went for that whole chain smoker thing. And it was really.. .disgusting!"

The cigarettes were herbal instead of tobacco. But the makeup team gave him yellow teeth and makeup on his hands to look like a real smoker. Sadly, we won't get to see what those characters are up to years later.

1994 Alt-Rock Hit Written in Just 15 Minutes Became One of the Greatest Songs of the ’90s

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 7:34pm

One of the most haunting and intricate songs of the 1990s, "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden, reportedly came together in just 15 minutes. More than 30 years later, the surreal 1994 grunge anthem remains one of the greatest alternative songs of the decade.

Across many interviews, the Soundgarden frontman, the late Chris Cornell, was asked about the origins of their signature song "Black Hole Sun," and the story is always generally the same. Cornell says the groundbreaking hit came to him incredibly fast, arriving almost fully formed in his head.

"I was in a car driving home like at 4 a.m. when I wrote that song," Cornell told Howard Stern in a 2007 appearance on The Howard Stern Show. The singer and songwriter says he kept repeating it all the way home where he immediately whistled it into a tape recorder in case he forgot it.

"You hear it in your head almost like you're listening to the radio?" Stern asked him.

"Exactly," Cornell responded.

Related: 1986 Song About Being Burned in Love Became an '80s Rock Anthem

Later, in an August 2014 interview with Uncut magazine, Cornell explained where the song title emerged from, "It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV and I heard wrong. I heard ‘blah blah blah black hole sun blah blah blah.’ I thought that would make an amazing song title, but what would it sound like? It all came together, pretty much the whole arrangement including the guitar solo that’s played beneath the riff."

"It's weird," Cornell explained in a 1997 Q&A interview with KERRANG!, "I wrote 'Black Hole Sun' in about 15 minutes and it was a big hit, but I've spent weeks and weeks on other songs that weren't."

Not only did the band's most defining song come to Cornell quickly, it was also a stylistic departure for Soundgarden, or as lead guitarist Kim Thayil said in the Uncut interview, "It wasn’t the heavy, guitar-orientated song we were used to. It had more of a pop construction, but [what] it had seemed powerful."

Soundgarden's earlier music leaned heavier, more noisy and raw, but "Black Hole Sun" blended a beautiful melody with an apocalyptic tone and surreal, unsettling lyrics with an almost dreamlike production. In fact, it was so different for the band that Cornell himself says that many fans were almost hypnotized into believing the song had a pleasant undercurrent.

"I write songs best when I'm depressed," Cornell admitted in a March 1994 interview with Melody Maker. Cornell had long been candid about his struggles with depression, isolation, and addiction. "No one seems to get this, but 'Black Hole Sun' is sad. But because the melody is really pretty, everyone thinks it's almost chipper, which is ridiculous."

"Black Hole Sun" appeared on Soundgarden's fourth studio album, Superunknown, in 1994. It became Soundgarden’s first No. 1 song on any Billboard chart, topping the Mainstream Rock Airplay charts for seven weeks in 1994. The '90s alt-rock song became a global hit and won a Grammy Award for "Best Hard Rock Performance" in 1995 and the MTV Video Music Award for "Best Metal/Hard Rock Video" the same year.

Over 30 years later, fans still enthusiastically revisit the Soundgarden track. “Black Hole Sun” currently ranks No. 6 on Ranker's list of "The Best Alternative Songs Of The '90s."

To date, the 1994 hit also has over 1 billion streams on the Spotify streaming service, and younger generations are discovering across social media. Search  #blackholesun on TikTok, and you’ll receive more than 22.4K posts that include homages to Soundgarden and Cornell and unique covers of the song. On Instagram, the #blackholesun tag delivers 99.9K posts.

After Chris Cornell died by suicide in 2017, at age 52, the impact of "Black Hole Sun" only grew more emotional for fans. More than 30 years after its release, the haunting grunge anthem still stands as one of the most significant alternative rock songs of the 1990s—a testament to both Cornell’s songwriting and Soundgarden’s lasting impact on music history. The band’s 2025 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame only further solidified that legacy.

With its surreal lyrics, thunderous guitars, and otherworldly emotional pull, “Black Hole Sun” still feels unlike anything else from its era, or anything since. Decades later, the song remains just as hypnotic and powerful as it was in 1994.
