During the summer months, many people spend more time outdoors enjoying the beach, local lakes, and other waterfront destinations where they can stay cool and refreshed. These seasonal adventures often include our beloved four-legged companions, as more pet parents look for ways to bring their dogs along for the fun rather than leave them behind at home. Whether it's a day at the lake, a boat ride with family, or an afternoon relaxing by the shore, sharing those experiences with our pets has become an important part of summer for many households.

As exciting as these outings can be, safety remains a top priority whenever dogs are near or on the water. Pet parents want their furry friends to enjoy every moment while also being protected from potential risks associated with swimming, boating, or extended time around deep water. Having the right safety precautions in place can make all the difference, allowing owners to focus on creating memories instead of worrying about what could go wrong.

Rare Bengal-Maine Coon Mix Looks Like an Ancient Painting Come to Life

Wed, 07/08/2026 - 8:00am

Some cats just don't even look real. It's rare to come across one, but when you do, it's basically required to do a double-take. How is it possible that one cat could be so stunning, and more than that, where do I get one?

That's how I feel about this Bengal-Maine Coon. Every time I see him, it's like he's gotten more beautiful. I can hardly stand it, especially when you can see his face in all its glory. He looks like an ancient painting brought to life:

@nevloongbottom

Need this hot weather to skedaddle so I can go back on my walks 💬. #catlover#kittensoftiktok#mainecoon#walkies#kitten

♬ Ooh Ahh (My Life Be Like) [feat. Tobymac] - Grits

There are a few things that Neville the Bengal Maine Coon's thousands of adoring fans love about him. The first is that he's humble, never letting all of his fame get to his head, but also:

  • His face is so cool.
  • He's shorter-haired than a typical Maine Coon.
  • His short hair really shows off how long he is.

Neville is still technically a kitten: he's only 10 months old. Already, though, he's bigger and longer than most adult cats will ever be in their lives. In addition to that, he has face markings that look like the kind of hand-painted eyeliner you'd only find in an ancient cave somewhere!

Being that Nevile is half Bengal, half Maine Coon, it should be no surprise to anyone that he loves adventure. He loves going out on the town with Mom, always on his leash. He walks better on that leash than some dogs do! He loves outside time, where he gets to pretend to be a bird:

He's a little too good at the chirping impression, if you ask me. Blindfolded, I don't know that I could tell them apart! Add "super smart" to his list of good qualities, I guess.

More About the Bengal-Maine Coon

Neville is an amazing, stunning, smart cat. He's the kind of cat that everyone in the world would probably love to have, but it's important to remember that these breeds are difficult! His mom is so dedicated to him. She's awesome, too, clearly: he's living a great life!

Nils Jacobi / Getty Images

Bengal-Maine Coons are highly intelligent, highly energetic cats. They come from two of the largest, craziest breeds there are: Bengals are closely related to wild animals, remember! That means this breed, though stunning, is not for the faint of heart. They need:

  • A lot of exercise.
  • Frequent interaction with their favorite humans.
  • Enrichment, including when you're not home.
  • Consistent training to keep them from being destructive.

These cats are best-suited for experienced cat parents who spend a lot of time at home. They love companionship too much to be alone for long, and if they're anything like Neville, they'll want to go on daily adventures!

Costco's Sturdy 2-in-1 Pet Steps and Ramp Set Is a Game Changer for Senior Pups

Wed, 07/08/2026 - 7:55am

As a dog dad, it's important to me to keep my pups comfortable and ensure they have easy access to the things around the home that they enjoy most. Some dogs are much smaller than others and often struggle to complete simple everyday tasks that larger dogs can handle with ease. Things like getting up onto the sofa, climbing into bed, or getting in and out of a vehicle can become difficult without assistance. That's where having the right tools and support systems makes a major difference in their daily comfort and safety.

Providing ramps, steps, or other accessibility aids helps reduce strain on their joints while giving them more independence and confidence moving around their environment. At the end of the day, it's about making sure they can enjoy the same spaces without unnecessary stress or risk of injury, while keeping their lifestyle as comfortable, safe, and enjoyable as possible. Giving them that level of care not only improves their quality of life but also strengthens the bond we share as pet owners, making every moment together more meaningful and enjoyable in everyday routines and experiences at home and on the go with them always present together.

This product exceeded my expectations. Right out of the box, it was a breeze to set up—no complicated instructions, just a few quick adjustments, and it was good to go. Black Cat Returned to Shelter After Just 2 Days for 'Not Listening' — His Story Is Breaking Hearts

Wed, 07/08/2026 - 7:10am

Dogs and cats in shelters long to be chosen by pet parents so they can experience a real forever home. Unfortunately, some fur babies are returned for various reasons and need to wait all over again to be adopted. These circumstances are very traumatic and confusing to animals, making their living situation even more stressful.

Falcon is a black cat at the NAWS Humane Society who had his happy ending cut short too many times and is now hoping for another miracle.

@franflight

Falcon truly is such an amazing cat who had been dealt such a bad set of cards. He is so beyond special and so deserving of a home that will finally be his forever. Falcon doesn’t love other dogs but gets along great with other cats. He is 9 years old and FIV+. If you have any questions please feel free to message me and if you are serious about adopting please submit an adoption application at nawsus.org under the tab “adoption center”. I love you guys SO much, let’s get this guy home! 😭🫂🤍 #adopt #adoptdontshop #cat #catsoftiktok #catadoption

♬ Home - Slowed - Edith Whiskers

The TikTok from @franflight told Falcon's story and how he was brought back to the shelter just two days after his most recent adoption.

"Falcon was adopted for 48 hours and returned back to us today," the on-screen text explained as a NAWS staff member gave Falcon some much-needed affection. "The reason? 'Not listening'."

The video showed the paperwork for Falcon's return, noting the adopter commented, "He's a good cat, I just don't have the patience for him." This wasn't the first time pretty kitty had faced a heartbreaking turn of events.

"Falcon was originally at our shelter in 2022," the story continued. "He was adopted in 2023, and relinquished back to us this year due to no fault of his own. Nothing ever works out in Falcon's favor."

The feline fur baby is positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, making adoption more of a challenge. Black cats also deal with lower adoption rates, adding to Falcon's distressing circumstances.

"Falcon truly is such an amazing cat who had been dealt such a bad set of cards," the caption shared. "He is so beyond special and so deserving of a home that will finally be his forever."

Falcon Got His Happy Ending

An updated post in the comments revealed that Falcon was adopted and doing well in his new home!

"He’s home with us now!" Falcon's new parent shared, along with a picture of him with his forever family. "He hid for a few hours but then came out and is already purring so much and cuddling with us in bed. We love him so much."

4 Birth Months That Raise the Happiest Dogs and Cats

Wed, 07/08/2026 - 5:10am

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to have the happiest, most easygoing pets? We often assume that dogs and cats are naturally cheerful creatures, however, the truth is that the personalities of every animal are all different, and how they are nurtured and brought up plays a role in that. So, if you're planning on getting a furry companion, how can you know if you'll be a good pet parent and if your four-legged family member will be spirited and content? In astrology, it’s believed that the month you’re born in can shape your energy, personality, and even the kind of environment you create at home. And when it comes to pets, that energy may show up in the way animals feel around you—calm, secure, playful, and deeply bonded.

So which birth months are said to be most connected to raising the happiest dogs and cats? According to astrologers, no matter what your dream dog breed or cat breed is, a few birth dates stand out for their naturally warm and uplifting energy, making them born to be pet moms and dads. After all, since no two birth months are the same, as each one is associated with different cosmic symbolism and traits influenced by its two zodiac signs. Therefore, everyone will have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to pet parenthood and caring for a puppy or kitten.

While it is possible for anyone to be a pet parent, astrologer Molly Vasicek, says there are a handful of birth months that are destined to raise the happiest dogs and cats. Curious if you're one of them? Read on to find out which ones are linked to being a natural pet parent based off of astrology and numerology.

Which Birth Months Raise the Happiest Dogs and Cats?

To determine whether you were born in one of the birth months that raise the happiest dogs and cats, discard your numerical birth date. Instead, focus on only the month below. Vasicek reveals the birth months that rear cheerful pets and the astrological influences at play.

April Two content pets at home.

People born in April arrive right in the heart of spring, a season associated with fresh energy, longer days, and a sense of renewal. In astrology, that same mix of momentum and warmth is believed to influence the environment they create for pets—one that balances excitement with comfort.

“April runs on fresh spring optimism, and pets absolutely clock it,” Vasicek says. “Aries, born March 21 to April 19, are ruled by Mars and bring enthusiastic hype-man energy to everything, including a regular Tuesday walk, which turns every outing into the best day of their dog’s life.”

As the month transitions, Taurus takes over from April 20 to May 20, bringing a noticeably calmer rhythm into the home. Ruled by Venus, Taurus energy is often associated with stability and sensory ease.

“Taurus create homes that feel like a soft exhale, with cozy spots, good food and an unrushed pace that lets pets relax all the way down,” Vasicek explains.

Together, Aries and Taurus create a blend of high energy and deep comfort, which is an environment where pets are just as likely to zoom around with excitement as they are to settle into long, content naps.

June   A person with a birth month that makes a great pet parent.

Some people seem especially in tune with their pets, like they can read every mood shift before it even happens. June babies are one of them as people born in this month are often associated with raising especially engaged, emotionally aware pets.

Seeing how this month is ruled by two zodiac signs—Gemini (May 21 to June 20) and Cancer (June 21 to July 22)—people with birth dates during this time bring a blend of mental stimulation and emotional care into the home environment.

“June pet parents raise dogs and cats who feel seen, which is a weirdly specific form of happiness but a real one,” Vasicek notes. "Since Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet associated with communication, curiosity, and constant movement, hat energy often translates into a lively, interactive dynamic with pets. Geminis are constitutionally unable to let things get boring, so they're switching up the walk route, inventing new games and narrating their pet's facial expressions in different voices.

Cancer, on the other hand, is ruled by the Moon and brings a deeply intuitive, nurturing presence into their pet parenting. “This sign tunes into their pet's emotional needs the way most people tune into the weather,” Vasicek explains. “Overall, pets raised by June-born owners tend to be both mentally engaged and emotionally secure, which is when an animal's full personality actually comes out.”

August A pet's happiness can be determined by who they are around.

August blends the bold, expressive personality of Leo with the grounded, detail-oriented nature of Virgo, which is a great combination for raising pets, according to Vasicek. "August pairs two very different energies, but they both know how to make their pets feel happy and loved," she notes.

"Leos, which are born July 23 to August 22, are ruled by the sun and they walk around like their dog or cat is the most impressive creature ever born, which their pet 100% picks up on," Vasicek states. "That constant delight becomes the pet's default emotional weather."

Those born from August 23 to September 22, are also animal lovers who will do anything to make sure their pet is cared for and in good spirits.

"Virgos are all about bringing steady attentive care with well-timed meals, clean spaces and a calm household where nothing unexpected is about to happen," Vasicek says. "Dogs and cats both thrive on that combination of adoration and reliability."

December A cat who adores its pet parent and feels loved.

December may close the book on each calendar year, but pet parents with this birth month will be glad to hear that they are known for bringing up some of the happiest dogs and cats.

"December parents raise pets who are confident and settled at the same time," Vasicek explains. "Sagittarians, born November 22 to December 21, are ruled by Jupiter, the planet of luck and optimism, and they move through the world like things are going to be fun, which their pets start to expect too."

Meanwhile, Capricorns (born December 22 to January 19) are governed by Saturn.

"Capricorns bring the structure and dependability that turns a happy pet into a secure one, because animals get anxious without rhythm," Vasicek says. "The combination of 'life is good' and 'everything is handled' is the quiet backbone of a pet who is genuinely, steadily happy."

7 Things That Make Your Dog Feel More Loved Than Treats, Vets Say

Wed, 07/08/2026 - 5:10am

It's no secret that snacks are one of the easiest ways to reward a dog. They help reinforce good behavior, make training more effective and can even strengthen the bond between dogs and their humans. However, is that the only way to show your dog you care for them? If you think a handful of snacks is the greatest expression of love, experts say your dog would probably disagree. There are actually tons of ways you can show your pet affection that doesn't involve food or spending money at all.

Dogs may love treats, but what they value most can't be found in a biscuit jar. Dogs pay attention to something much deeper: how you make them feel. They remember the comfort of your voice, the reassurance of your presence, and the trust built through your everyday interactions. These actions make them feel warm and cozy inside.

So, while your furry family member will probably always be happy to accept a snack, veterinarians say simple, thoughtful gestures have an even greater impact on their emotional well-being. Therefore, if you've ever asked yourself, "Does my dog know I love them?" Here are seven things that can make your dog feel more loved than treats. You may be surprised how communicating them can build your bond with your dog and get the message across about how much they mean to you.

Saying Their Name

To you, your dog’s name might seem like just another word. However, to your furbaby, it can mean much more as it's actually one way to make your dog feel loved that you might not realize.

“This is one of the strongest emotional cues,” says Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director at Ferndale Kennels. “Their name said kindly is more powerful than a treat. It means they belong and are remembered.”

Dogs quickly learn to associate their name with attention and positive experiences. However, the way you say it matters just as much as the word itself.

When said in a warm, relaxed voice, veterinarian Dr. Sarah Wooten says dogs associate tone with safety, affection and approval. “Dogs may not understand every word you say, but they’re very sensitive to tone, rhythm, facial expression and body language,” she explains.

That means simply greeting your dog by name when you walk through the door can become a meaningful daily routine that makes them burst with happiness.

One-on-One Attention To your dog, your presence is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

Getty Images NiKita Filippov

How can you build your bond with your dog if you're a new dog mom or dad? Giving them your full attention is one way!

After all, in today’s busy world, pet parents think it's easy to multitask while spending time with their fluffy sidekick. They might scroll through social media while tossing a ball or answer emails while they’re lying beside them. Yet experts say dogs notice when your attention is divided and it makes them feel like they aren't important to you.

Dogs enjoy undivided, focused attention, especially when you’re fully engaged. “That’s why dogs are always so incredibly bonded to kids, as kids always say hi to the dog first rather than being busy responding to a customer’s phone call or calling a friend back,” Murdoch states. “Dogs are very good at noticing whether we’re truly present and they have our attention, as they live in the present all the time.”

Even just 10-15 minutes of focused interaction each day can mean much more than giving them another biscuit.

A Predictable Routine

Dogs thrive on knowing what comes next. Regular mealtimes, daily walks and consistent bedtime routines help create a sense of stability that experts say many dogs crave. In your dog's language, that is a sign you love them and makes your dog feel cherished.

“This is more stabilizing and happy for them than an insecure life with an occasional indulgent treat,” Murdoch says.

To your pet, predictability lowers uncertainty, which can reduce stress levels. This is especially important for anxious dogs, senior dogs and pets adjusting to a new home after adoption. And while life can’t always be perfectly scheduled, maintaining as much consistency as possible helps your dog feel secure and like they are nnumber one in your heart.

Dedicated Playtime Dogs thrive on love, trust, and everyday companionship.

Getty Images MilosStankovic

For many pups, nothing beats having a good time with their favorite human. In fact, that makes your dog feel valued. That's why it's important to show affection in ways that matter to your dog.

“Tug, fetch, hide-and-seek or silly interactive games can be more meaningful than a treat because the dog isn’t just getting something, they’re doing something fun with their person,” Wooten explains. “Play builds trust, joy, confidence and connection.”

Interactive play also gives dogs an outlet for natural behaviors like chasing, retrieving and problem-solving. Even a few minutes with a favorite toy can strengthen your relationship.

Being Included in Daily Life

What's your dog's love language? Seeing how dogs are social creatures, they don’t need constant entertainment, but rather quality time with their favorite people.

That could mean lying beside you while you work from home, tagging along on a car ride, joining you in the yard while you garden or relaxing on the couch together after dinner.

“Since dogs are social companions, inclusion helps them feel secure and emotionally connected to you,” Wooten reveals.

Being included reminds your dog they’re part of the family and not separate from it.

Positive Training Sessions Rewarding good behavior strengthens the bond between you and your dog.

Did you know that your dog's mood can be determined by how you train them? Training isn’t just about teaching obedience. It also strengthens communication between you and your dog, so it's important to always let them know you care.

When training is reward-based and encouraging, dogs often see it as quality time rather than work.

“Dogs enjoy understanding what their person wants and being successful,” Wooten explains. “Short, positive sessions build communication, confidence, trust and mental enrichment.”

Keeping sessions short and positive helps prevent frustration for both you and your pup while also making your closer than ever.

Respecting Their Boundaries

Sometimes the best thing you can do is give your dog space. It reminds your dog they're loved because it shows you are paying attention to their body language.

“If a dog turns away, moves back, licks their lips, yawns, stiffens or avoids contact, they may be asking for space,” Wooten says. “Respecting those signals teaches the dog that their person is trustworthy.”

Listening to those cues helps build confidence because your dog learns they don’t have to escalate to growling or snapping to be understood.

At the end of the day, every dog is different. Some are highly food motivated while others are more into toys, praise, movement or simply spending time with their people.

Treats will always have a place in your dog’s heart, but Wooten says, “The best way to make a dog feel loved is to learn what that individual dog finds safe, enjoyable and meaningful, then build those moments into daily life.”

As adorable as kittens are, caring for colonies of feral cats and kittens is no easy feat and is not for the weak of heart. It requires a regimen, structure, practicality, and working with local support systems like vet clinics and rescue centers.

Some ways to take care of feral cats if you happen upon them:

  • Feed them on a schedule, every single day
  • Provide ample shelter and bedding where possible
  • Practice TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) in tandem with local rescues
  • Remove leftover food from areas
  • Make sure water is easily accessible
  • Remember they're wild, and keep your distance

At the end of the day, make sure that if you're caring for stray and feral cats to consult with experts and do right by the cats. This is the most important thing.

We all want the best for the creatures around us. And in the best of cases, we'll find happy endings like the ones for Mama Fuzz and her babies. That's the real magic, after all.

Tips for Senior Dogs

If you find yourself lucky enough to live with a dog during their twilight years, it's important to remember that they require different (and sometimes more!) care than another dog. Keeping your senior pup happy and healthy is always of the utmost importance, so making sure you're doing your due diligence with their care is very critical.

Senior dogs require more attention and even changes, which always should start with consulting a vet. Their checkups may increase, which may involve added bloodwork, etc. Keeping an eye on their weight is also important, as weight fluctuations either way with older dogs can indicate other issues. Things like diet adjustment and supplements can also be great additions to your senior dog's day-to-day.

With home life, keeping their mobility possible with rugs and traction is super helpful for aging joints and bones. Additionally, an orthopedic bed is helpful to prevent pain.

Enrichment needs will likely change with age, so slower walks to sniff and get fresh air can replace runs and super active play. It's also important to go at their pace and adjust to meet them where they're at.

Basically, pay attention to your dog! Adapting with them while they age is the recipe for a happy, healthy pup, just like glorious Mr. Ernie.

Every US State Has a Favorite Dog Breed — and a Few States Have Very Surprising Taste

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 8:48pm

Americans own more than 56 million dogs, but there's no single breed the whole country agrees on. Not even close.

A new analysis by Voronoi, an infographics app by Visual Capitalist, of more than 1.2 million dog insurance records collected by U.S. News & World Report between 2022 and 2025 mapped the most popular dog breed in every state.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Looking at the results, eight different breeds finish first somewhere in the country. The results reveal as much about regional culture as they do about dogs.

The Breed That Wins, but Not as Dominant as You Would Think

Purple Collar Pet Photography / Getty Images

According to the data, the Labrador retriever is the most popular dog in 16 states. The number sounds amazing at first glance, but look closer, and that is less than a third of the country.

The next most popular dog is the Chihuahua, leading in 14 states. American pit bull terriers lead with seven, golden retrievers with five, and German shepherds with four. French bulldogs claim the top spot in two states. Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzus each win one.

That's eight breeds across 50 states, which reflects how genuinely different American pet parents are from one another depending on where they live.

There is a reason why labs dominate. Up until a few years ago, the Labrador retriever had topped the American Kennel Club's list of most popular dog breeds for years. However, owning a Lab is not as simple as you think, as they can be stubborn, need a lot of exercise, and shed year-round.

If we look at the map of where each dog dominates, we can understand the logic. Look at the map, and labs lead in the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic. Their reputation for adaptability in different climates and family settings plays a role.

Chihuahuas dominate the Southwest, with regions like Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, where the breed has deep cultural roots. But we also have to look at the practical fit. People living in smaller living spaces and warmer climates are perfect for the Chihuahua.

The Surprising State Pick That Stands Out

Imagehit / Getty Images

Among the familiar names on the map, New Jersey's favorite stands out. The Garden State chose the Shih Tzu.

This small companion, praised for its flowing coat, expressive eyes, and affectionate personality, managed to beat some of the most popular dog breeds. Here is a fun fact: the Shih Tzu is No. 21 on the American Kennel Club's list of most popular dog breeds. But in New Jersey, this dog stands out.

For people living in apartments, smaller breeds like the Shih Tzu can be appealing because they often adapt well to indoor living and close companionship.

America's Love for Dogs

America's favorite dogs are not all the same. Some families prefer playful retrievers, others want a tiny companion with a huge personality, and some love working breeds.

The perfect dog has always been less about a national ranking and more about the connection between one animal and one family.

So whether your state picked a Labrador, a Chihuahua, a golden retriever, or an unexpected favorite like the Shih Tzu, the real winner is the bond people build with their dogs every day.

Duck Family 'Knocks' on Door Every Day—the Reason Will Make You Smile

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 8:20pm

There are a million things to be said about cats and dogs as pets, but ducks don't get enough credit. These smart, adorable feathered friends can be just as affectionate and loyal as any other companion.

For two ducks named Goose and Chicken, they're also excellent communicators! The funny bird duo loves to "knock" on the door for one very specific reason—and it's too cute.

@christineeastermiller

#backyardducks #ducks

♬ original sound - Evening Jazz Radio

Goose and Chicken walked right up to the door and alerted Mom, Christine, to follow them, and fast. It's not every day you have ducks standing on your front porch, so she did as they suggested and followed them to the backyard flower bush. It's there, they all but told her in human English words that they'd like to drink some fresh water in the shade!

There aren't enough words to describe how incredible this duck pair is because that's such a smart move, especially in this heat. Christine also noted in the comments that they understand quite a bit, paying close attention to body language. Naturally, she did as they asked and got these babes some ice water!

Related: Ducks Choose Dachshund as Their 'Supreme Leader' and It's Nothing Short of Epic

"Better communicators than my husband," one fan joked, while another wrote, "They said: WE WILL TAKE REFRESHMENTS IN THE SHADE!" Another added they "They came straight to the landlord with complaints!"

As if one video isn't proof of duck intelligence, have no fear. Goose and Chicken are more like toddlers than birds. In another post, they refuse to go to bed, sending Mom on an actual "wild Goose chase!"

@christineeastermiller

♬ original sound - christineeastermiller How Smart Are Ducks?

You can see by the way Goose and Chicken navigate the world around them that ducks are incredibly smart. These birds can recognize human faces, form strong memories, and can even differentiate between colors and shapes. Because of their ability to think abstractly, ducks can tap into spatial mapping skills to aid in their stellar migration route planning!

Before Goose and Chicken, I had no idea how ducks think things through, but now? I fully expect an adorable duck couple to knock on my door and lead me to whatever it is they need!

Woman Finds 'Perfect' Split-Faced Calico Kitten on a Walk—and Wins the Cat Distribution Lottery

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 7:55pm

Sometimes you take a different route because you want a change of scenery.

Sometimes you take a different route because the universe wants you to meet the kitten who has been waiting for you at that exact moment.

That's exactly what happened to one woman who spotted a tiny Calico kitten in the road after choosing a different route just three nights earlier.

@ultimategooseloverr

life comes at you fast 🧡 #catdistributionsystem #calicokitten #kittensoftiktok #cutekitten

♬ Sleepgarden - Alan Gogoll

That's the kind of moment that makes me believe the cat distribution system has very specific office hours. And this kitten? She looks like the premium prize!

In the video, the little Calico has one of those faces that makes you stop everything you're doing. Her markings are split so perfectly down the middle that she almost looks painted. It's the kind of face people instantly zoom in on.

Most kittens look cute.

This one looks like the universe was showing off. Big time.

The post caption says, "Life comes at you fast," which is true, especially when life comes in the form of a tiny split-faced kitten suddenly sitting in your path like a very chaotic delivery service has assigned her to you.

One comment said the kitten would have been on that other route because they were meant to be together, and that's the exact kind of comment this story deserves. Maybe it was luck. Maybe it was timing. Maybe the cat distribution system rerouted both of them at the same time and quietly hit "confirm delivery."

Either way, the kitten was found. And believing in magic is fun.

Finding a kitten alone in the road is not just a cute surprise. It's a vulnerable little animal in a dangerous place. Cars, weather, predators, and hunger can turn a lucky sighting into something urgent very quickly.

But this time, someone noticed.

And now this tiny Calico with the perfect split face has a story that starts with danger and turns into destiny. That's why these cat distribution stories always get me. The phrase itself makes it sound like cats have a secret government agency placing them into homes. And if you've never been gifted by the system, you may feel the universe is being mean to you in some cruel way.

Please be honest: If you found a kitten like this on a walk, how fast would you become unavailable for all other plans?

Because once a kitten appears in the road looking like a tiny work of art, the errand is over. The walk is over. The life you had 2 minutes ago may also be over.

The cat distribution lottery has been drawn.

And this woman clearly won.

How the 'Cat Distribution System' Works

The "cat distribution system" is the internet's favorite way of describing the oddly perfect timing of a kitty showing up exactly when someone is ready to help. It isn't a real system, of course, but the feeling behind it is real: Sometimes a stray cat or kitten crosses your path, and you become the person who can change what happens next.

If you find a kitten outside, the safest course of action depends on the kitten's age, condition, and surroundings. The ASPCA recommends checking whether the kitten may have a mother nearby, contacting a shelter or rescue, and making sure found kittens are scanned for a microchip when appropriate.

The cat distribution system may be a joke, but this little Calico's timing was perfect.

Golden Retriever’s Constant Background Appearances Are Cracking People Up

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 7:20pm

Some dogs love to be the center of attention, while others prefer to do their own thing, quietly appearing only when they're ready for attention. But some dogs want to be the focus all the time, so much so that even when they're not, they make sure they are.

In this video, we meet a Golden Retriever who's a "stage 5 clinger," and his mom spots him where none of us would have expected to see him. Take a look!

@alainahancock

Just a golden being a typical golden x #fyp #goldenretriever #funnymoments #viral #mumsoftiktok

♬ Queen of Disaster - ella

Shared by Alaina Hancock (@alainahancock), the TikTok video shows an everyday happening at her house that's hilarious thanks to her ability to spot something hiding in the distance.

Henry, Alaina's Golden Retriever, is in the house while she's filming from the car, and he's hidden enough that we likely wouldn't see him if it weren't for the slow zoom-in on his eyeballs through the window. He's a "stage 5 clinger," and he's not sure why his mom is in the car without him.

Related: Proud Golden Retriever Is Twinning With His New Human Brother and It’s Too Sweet

In the comments, people giggle at how funny this clingy Henry is being, and how you can always see him looking, even if you have to sort of look for him first.

One person wrote, "I have two dogs like this. They know exactly what they are doing and make me feel guilty." Henry's mom replied, "So bad."

Another shared, "The look of where you're going," along with very appropriate laughing emojis. Henry's mom replied, pretending to answer as the pup, writing, "Did I give you permission to leave without me?"

Someone else added, "Stop," to which Henry's mom replied, "It's even worse that I've just got in the car."

Why Some Dogs Follow Their Parents Everywhere

Henry is such a silly guy in this video, and it's so hard not to just laugh at his face, which looks shocked, sad, and upset all at the same time, because his mom is going somewhere without him. He seems to love following her everywhere, and according to experts, some dogs are just like that.

PetMD explains that some dogs love to follow their humans around everywhere they go because of their instincts and boredom. The site explains that throughout history, dogs have been pack animals, which means they like to move and hang in groups, and when they don't have other pups around to do that with, well, the pack becomes you.

Since canines are social animals, they love being around others, including you. If they're a little bored or hoping to convince you to give them an extra treat, they might take to following you around and learning your routine—they want to see what you're up to as well.

In the case of silly Henry, the Golden Retriever, that means he's off staring at his mama when he's not invited along with whatever routine she's doing; that's part of his charm.

British Shorthair Looks like a Toasted Marshmallow Flying through the Air

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 7:04pm

The internet has always been home to cute cats. And now, thanks to additions to our feeds from TikTok, we're thankfully exposed to even more adorable, ridiculously sweet felines.

Emily, who goes by @emsulu on TikTok, took to social media to share her adorable British Shorthair. He has a great jumping technique, and given his beautiful coloring, looks just like a little toasted marshmallow while flying through the air after a big leap.

Fair Warning: The following video may give you British Shorthair kitten fever.

@emsulu

no because why does he look like a little teddy 🥺🥺 those back paws !!! #britishshorthair #britishshorthaircats #bshkitten #kitten #kittensoftiktok

♬ awww so cute - Cherri ⁉️

Emily's caption rightfully called out how her kitten looks like a teddy with the best back paws. Commenters on the video agreed and couldn't get over the cuteness.

"Omg i love when they do the bunny jump 😩"

"No the chubby paws!! Cannot cope"

"😍😍😍 thats so cute indeed"

What are British Shorthairs Like to Live With?

Aside from being absolutely adorable, British Shorthairs are excellent additions as a family pet. The breed is known for being easily adaptable, mellow, great in apartments, and full of personality.

British Shorthairs are very loyal and can be cuddly, though they're not super clingy cats or overly affectionate. They are on the lazy side and love to lounge and be around their people. These mellow, laid-back cats are great with other animals and kids and have even been described as "the ideal roommate."

British Shorthairs are great at being alone and don't require helicopter pet parents. While they are obviously playful as kittens, they tend to mellow out with adulthood and love to be lazy and sleep. This does make it important to watch their diets so they don't become overweight, which can impact their health.

If you're considering adding a British Shorthair to your home, they'll likely fit right in. Just make sure you have plenty of purr-fect places for them to jump so you too could have your own flying house marshmallow.

Woman Finds a Tiny Newborn Bat, and the Internet Is Desperate to Save It

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 7:00pm

Finding an injured bird or abandoned kitten is one thing, but a tiny newborn bat is something most of us have never found in our yards. That's exactly what happened to Jadyn (@jadyn_nicole04) when she discovered a hairless baby bat all alone on her driveway and realized that if it was going to survive, it needed help fast.

The newborn bat, also called a pup, looked like it had just been born, with no fur and its eyes still closed. Jadyn gently placed it on a paper towel while she figured out what to do next. After watching her emotional video, viewers from around the world became deeply invested, offering advice and encouragement, and desperately hoping the tiny pup would pull through.

What Should You Do If You Find a Baby Bat?

Now that the entire internet is checking their yards for a baby bat of their own, you might be wondering what to do if you actually find one. Wildlife experts at Bat World Sanctuary say no bat should ever be handled with bare hands because, even at a very young age, they can carry diseases such as rabies. They also note that "many states will euthanize a bat touched with bare hands."

The sanctuary also cautions, "Do NOT attempt to care for the bat on your own. Bats need specialized food and housing, as well as medical treatment. Attempting to care for the bat on your own could jeopardize the health of the bat as well as your own."

If you find a bat on the ground, Bat World Sanctuary recommends waiting until it's motionless before carefully placing it in a secure, lidded container while wearing thick gloves or using a towel. If it's dark outside and the bat appears healthy, you can try releasing it. If it doesn't fly away, keep it somewhere safe and quiet until you can contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, which is always the best course of action.

In some cases, healthy baby bats can be reunited with their mothers or released once they're old enough. Orphaned or injured pups, however, require specialized warmth, feeding, and medical care that only trained wildlife rehabilitators can provide.

Hopefully, if you ever find yourself in Jadyn's shoes, you'll know exactly how to give a tiny bat its best chance at survival.

Black Lab Puppy Takes the Dreamiest Boat Nap—And We’re Extremely Jealous

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 6:26pm

One of the indisputable best parts about summer is being able to go out by the water on hot days. And it's no surprise that our furry friends and pet family members love being able to do this just as much as we do!

TikTok user @deweyandbanks regularly takes to social media to share the daily lives of their two dogs, Black Lab Banks and Yellow Lab Dewey. In a throwback video they recently shared, little Banks took the dreamiest-looking nap after a long day. And we have to say, we're pretty jealous of the setup.

Banks fully tuckered himself out after a bunch of swimming and curled up for a little snooze. The comments on the video loved the vibes and the method, while also calling out Banks' undeniable cuteness.

"Somebody snuggle that pup"

"Puppy Banks was one of the cutest puppies I’ve ever seen"

"Omg cutie!!!"

Boat Safety for Dogs

Like any and all activities where we include our pets, safety is the top priority. Whenever you're preparing to bring your dog out on the water, it's critical to make sure they are doing so with you supervised and safely.

Some things to consider before a boat day with your dog:

  • Use a leash to make sure they're not able to jump out or off of the boat
  • Give them a designated area to be, especially when in motion
  • A properly fitting life jacket is a great asset
  • Always keep plenty of fresh water handy on board
  • Plenty of shade and pet sunscreen are necessary when being out in the sun
  • Secure things like fishing gear and other things that could potentially hurt them
  • Monitor their behavior for signs of discomfort and/or heat stroke

With plenty of time, training, and supervision, a boat can be an excellent addition to your dog's life. Just make sure there's a nap spot—for both you and for them!

Senior Beagle 'Trying His Best to Get Adopted' Is Breaking and Stealing Hearts at the Same Time

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 6:10pm

I've always had a heart for senior dogs. While they may come with some health issues, these older canines shower their loved ones with love and gratitude. I previously adopted a 13-year-old Labrador who was a retired seeing eye dog, and I consider every second I had with him a total privilege.

Parker is an 8-year-old Beagle at the Indianapolis Animal Care Services hoping someone gives him a second chance at happiness.

@naahlulali

Parker has stolen my heart 🥹 #shelterdog #animalrescue #seniordog #souldog

♬ now the rain comes - mage tears

In the TikTok from @naahlulali, Parker was lying down in his kennel at the shelter looking lovingly into the camera with his irresistible eyes. The expression on his face could melt anyone's heart.

"Just a senior boy trying his best to get adopted," the on-screen text read.

Parker slowly got up with his tail in full wag mode and walked over to the window. The canine cutie stood and tried to charm anyone who happened to walk by. The Beagle beauty exuded pure love and gentleness, where you could see the hope and longing for a home written on his adorable face.

Followers fell in love with Parker and rallied to boost the post to get him the forever family he deserves:

  • "Parker is so sweet and a gentle soul, I can just tell," one gushed.
  • "What a sweet boy! Oh my goodness," another raved.
  • "A boost for this baby — we need to save this puppy," a follower remarked.
  • "Hoping this baby finds a loving home fast — wish i could adopt him!" someone commented.
  • "Someone please take this sweet boy home," a fan pleaded.
Senior Dogs Are Often the Last to Get Adopted But Make Some of the Best Companions

Some potential pet parents are hesitant to adopt a senior dog due to possible health issues and limited lifespan. Yet these canines offer so much love and affection, along with a truly grateful spirit.

While senior dogs often have the stereotype of being inactive, many can still have the playfulness of a puppy. Older pooches are usually calm and even-tempered and already possess the size and personality you see at first sight.

Related: Senior Pregnant Beagle Rescued From Lab Enjoys the Outdoors for the First Time and We're Emotional

Senior fur babies are already housebroken and often know basic commands. Most of all, these older dogs are irresistibly adorable and love to just be by your side.

Parker would make a wonderful addition to any family and will hopefully get a loving home as soon as possible.

German Shepherd Puppy Turns Water Bowl Into ‘DIY Swim Class’ to Beat This Heat

Tue, 07/07/2026 - 4:00pm

The heat wave going on right now is truly no joke. I live in the Northeast, and it's even gotten into the 90s here. It's too much! I thought it was supposed to be cold here! I'm practically melting, and my dogs really don't love it, either.

Recently, one German Shepherd cracked the code on staying cool in this insane heat. Her mom doesn't have a swimming pool, but she does have a water bowl! If you're committed enough, you can make anything work, and Ember certainly did:

@ember_thegsd

My favourite hobby is turning the house into a swimming pool 💦 #dogtok #gsd #puppydog

♬ original sound - Jana Detrick

Ember the GSD Puppy is committed not only to turning her water bowl into a great place for swimming lessons but also to filling up the whole house. She takes as much water out of the bowl as she can to try and spread the love around. She wants everyone to swim!

She's 14 weeks old, so she's spending some of the most formative weeks of her life in this heat wave! I bet this means she'll love water forever. Hopefully, they can eventually work on trying to get her to keep it in the bowl, but ...

Related: Malinois With a ‘Massive Crush’ on German Shepherd Has No Idea How to Play It Cool

It's not just her water bowl she goes crazy for, though. At 14 weeks old, Ember will do just about anything to keep herself entertained. Case in point, biting. She loves biting, especially as part of a larger temper tantrum:

@ember_thegsd

When mum won’t let me jump on the coffee table so I must bite her🦖 #dogtok #gsd #puppydog

♬ Im Just a Dog HERSH Music - hershmusic

If you want a German Shepherd puppy, you should know that this is how they all are. They might eventually grow out of some of it, but you'll need to train them vigorously. They're just too smart!

German Shepherds Love Water

Whether or not your specific dog will like to swim and get wet depends on the individual dog, but German Shepherds as a whole typically enjoy water and getting wet. Especially if it's in their water bowl, apparently.

omica meinen / Getty Images

German Shepherds are herding dogs: they were bred to spend a lot of time outside. They were familiar with the elements, and that's why they have such a thick double coat. It keeps water from penetrating down to their skin.

In terms of what types of water play they might like, you could try:

  • Actual pools
  • Sprinklers
  • Splash pads
  • Swims in lakes or the ocean

Apparently, though, absolutely nothing is as good as taking a dip in your water bowl. That's the philosophy Ember lives by at least!
