Ragdoll’s Ultra Rare ‘Paint Splatter’ Coloring Looks Hand-Painted

Sat, 05/09/2026 - 8:00am

Not all cats are created equal; that's just the truth. Every cat deserves love and to find a family that can give them everything they've ever wanted, but when it comes to looks... There are some cats that blow the competition out of the water.

Case in point: this Ragdoll cat. Her coloring is rare, but it's also so strangely, perfectly split that she almost doesn't look real. It's like an angel hand-painted her before they sent her down to earth:

@chinatheragdoll

What would her warrior cat name be? 👀🩷 #ragdoll #cat #fyp #warriorcats #ragdollcat

China the Chimera Ragdoll actually made my jaw drop. I love the caption, too: "What would her Warrior Cat name be?" She looks exactly like a Warrior Cat! There are other Chimera Ragdolls in the world, though they're few and far between, and none are quite like her.

What sets her apart is how dark the other side of her face is: it looks like someone drew a line and then colored her in. A lot of other Chimera cats will have little dots on their noses, but not her. Couple that with her neck fluff, and she's looking downright regal.

China is at least two years old, but her exact age hasn't been shared. According to her TikTok bio, she's a Seal Tortoiseshell Bicolor Point Ragdoll, which is a lot of different things going on at once. But you can legitimately see every single piece of it, even when she was a baby:

Can we take a moment for that cat tree, too? A gorgeous tree for a gorgeous girl. You can bet she gets treated like a total princess! With a face like that, how could anyone ever tell her no?!

Chimera Cats Are Rare Gems

Chimerism is the genetic mutation that causes this awesome split-face coloring. It's not just the face, though: you'll find similar splits on a Chimera's back, paws, and tail. In other videos of China, it's clear that she checks all of those boxes.

Chimerism is not more common in any one cat breed: it's rare across the board, and can technically occur in any cat. A lot of people claim they have Chimera cats (especially as a sales tactic), but the only way to actually verify that is through genetic testing. Ask to see proof before you buy, if that's your plan!

When you do get to see a true Chimera, though, it's so special. I can't wait to watch China continue to grow!

She Had Her Heart Set on a Kitten, but a Crying Mama Cat Had a Very Different Plan

Sat, 05/09/2026 - 7:10am

Plans can quickly change when adopting a new dog or cat for your family. You go into the shelter or rescue with an idea of a pet that would be a perfect match, and get completely pulled into a different direction when a specific fur baby speaks right to your soul.

Pepper the black-and-white mama cat stopped someone in their tracks with her sweet meows and ended up with a forever home.

@bubbles4mybrain

Sometimes they pick you instead :) wouldent change her for the world.#fyp #catsoftiktok #sheltercat

♬ som original - andromeda

In the TikTok from @bubbles4mybrain, a young woman walked through her local animal shelter with the definitive goal of adopting a kitten. When she heard the tender mewing from the mother cat, she had to meet the pretty kitty.

"This sweet mama kept meowing at me," the onscreen text explained as the woman leaned down and gently touched the cat's paws. A bond quickly formed. "So I took her home."

Her connection with the cat completely upended her plans to adopt a kitten. The young woman officially made the feline her new family member and named her Pepper.

"Sometimes they pick you instead," the caption shared. "Wouldn't change her for the world."

Followers were moved by the sweet story and shared similar experiences of finding their soul match at the shelter.

"Went to donate food and left with a 17-year-old FIV+ cat. He was the absolute best boy," one posted.

"Went to the shelter for a kitten... left with the biggest cat they had. He was 3 years old, 20 pounds, and cost $25. He turned 7 this year!" another explained.

"I adopted a mommy cat too! They have such a special place in my heart," someone remarked.

Why Mama Cats Often Get Overlooked

Many adopters looking to add a pet to their home often seek out younger animals. Puppies and kittens have that over-the-top cuteness factor and are usually the first to get adopted.

Older animals tend to stay in the shelter longer due to their age. Some potential pet parents assume a more senior dog or cat will have health issues and a shorter life expectancy. Mama dogs and cats are sometimes passed up due to concerns over medical issues that may have transpired before or after pregnancy.

While some pets require more care and attention, every canine and feline has something special to offer. Their gratitude for everything you give them is worth all the effort.

Arkansas Ranks No. 1 for Dog Flea Problems, Study Finds

Sat, 05/09/2026 - 6:10am

Just thinking about fleas is enough to make even the most seasoned pet owners feel itchy. But while fleas can show up practically anywhere, some places in the country are more likely to struggle with fleas than others. To find out if your state is the number one flea-infested state, according to a study, keep reading. Plus, find out how you can get rid of them fast!

Afterall, you want to do everything you can to protect your furry family member and keep them healthy, so finding out if you live in an area where fleas are more common can help you be more aware. While fleas can be found all over the country, if your home is in a place where there is warm, humid weather conditions, we hate to break it to you, but that's where these creatures love to be the most as they thrive in these conditions. In fact, fleas are more likely to live in places that stay moist and warm all year long, like in the West Coast and Southeast regions.

Do you think you and your pup live in a highly populated flea state? See below to discover the states that are most likely to be flea-infested, according to a study. You may be shocked by the top one.

Which State Has the Worst Flea Problem for Dogs? A dog rolling around because he has fleas.

What state has the worst flea problem for dogs? This data comes courtesy of Capstar from Banfield, an oral flea-killer for dogs. Based on survey findings, the No.1 flea-infested state for dogs in the U.S. is Arkansas.

Why does Arkansas have more fleas than other states? "States that have mild temperatures all year support the life cycle of the flea," according to Johnalyn Gordon, PhD, assistant professor of urban entomology at the UF/IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center. “This can allow fleas to survive and thrive without cold winter temperatures that reduce populations seasonally,” she says.

The 5 States With the Worst Dog Flea Problems

Arkansas isn’t the only state where flea infestations are likely. According to the data, the worst states for fleas were ranked and the top five states with the most fleas may surprise you. The survey recommends being especially cautious about fleas if you live in one of these states:

  • Arkansas
  • Florida
  • South Carolina
  • Alabama
  • Oregon
Why Do Some States Have More Fleas Than Others?

A lot comes down to the climate, according to Nancy Hinkle, PhD, a professor in the Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “Fleas require high humidity and warm temperatures to survive, so there can be dramatic differences in their prevalence regionally,” she says.

Plus, flea larvae and eggs in particular are very susceptible to dry and temperature extremes, according to Jim Fredericks, PhD, entomologist and senior vice president of public affairs at the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). "Once fleas get inside your home, they can often live year-round since many houses have stable heat and humidity levels," Fredericks says. "They’ll usually hide in areas where pets sleep or spend a lot of time. Microhabitats, where relative humidity is higher, like the cracks in hardwood floors, basements or shady areas under porches, are also spots where fleas thrive.”

Keep in mind that when flea larvae hatch out of eggs, that's when they start becoming a problem. "They'll dig into your carpet and feed on organic debris like dried skin, food crumbs and hair," says Edwin Burgess, PhD, assistant professor of veterinary entomology in the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. "Then when they get bigger, they’ll jump onto a host, like your cat or dog, and start feeding. In a total population of fleas, only about 5 percent of the population in a house is actually adult fleas. The rest are in the egg, larvae or pupae pre-adulthood stage.”

How to Tell If Your Dog Has Fleas

There are a few key signs to look out for if you're wondering if your dog has fleas. “Scratching is typically one of the first alerts to the presence of fleas on the animal,” Hinkle says. But she also points out that dogs scratch for a bunch of different reasons.

“If a pet is scratching, part the hair in the affected spot and watch for rapidly moving small insects,” she says. “If they are found, pinch them and pull them out.” However, don't flush them down your toilet or throw them away. Instead, experts say to place these bugs in a plastic bag and take them to your vet or local cooperative extension office to be identified. From there, you can get  recommendations on next steps.

How Fleas Can Affect Your Dog’s Health

There are a few health risks that fleas can pose to dogs. “Flea bites can cause itching and discomfort for dogs,” says Gordon. “For some dogs can be allergic to the bites and have more severe reactions. Fleas can even cause anemia in dogs, especially those that are younger or older. On top of that, they play role in tapeworm transmission as hosts of the tapeworm larvae too, which are transmitted to dogs when the flea is ingested by the animal."

Burgess agrees and adds that dog grooming can be harmful when they have fleas too. "Dogs can accidentally eat fleas when they groom themselves," Burgess explains.

What's the Fastest Ways to Get Rid of Dog Fleas?

It’s important to act fast if your dog has fleas. “Responding quickly is the name of the game,” Fredericks says. “An adult flea can lay up to 20 eggs a day and up to 2,000 in its lifetime. Reach out to your vet immediately to discuss the proper treatment plan for your pet.”

Again, keep in mind that there are likely many other fleas in your home in different life stages. “They are likely hiding on rugs and furniture throughout the house,” Fredericks says. “You need to treat all stages of fleas to control the infestation.”

So, how do you get rid of fleas on a dog? Burgess recommends calling in professionals for help. Gordon agrees. “Fleas require a multi-faceted synchronized approach, including working with a veterinarian for treatment of your pet and professional pest management company for treatment of yards and flooring inside the home,” she says. “Washing pet bedding—and any bedding where pets spend a lot of their time—in hot water and putting it through a high-heat dryer cycle is also important for decreasing flea populations quickly.”

It’s possible to get rid of a flea infestation, but Hinkle notes you need to be patient. “A consistent, sustained effort will be rewarded,” she says. “For success, both fleas on the animal and fleas in the environment must be targeted.”

Massive Gator Traps Florida Woman Outside Her Own Home and It's Intense

Sat, 05/09/2026 - 6:05am

Jennifer Becker came home from work expecting just another normal spring evening. Instead, she found herself locked out of her own house by a gator the size of a small car who’d made it's way to her doorstep.

The NBC South Florida TikTok shows exactly what transpired when Becker pulled into her driveway and spotted the massive alligator lounging in her front yard like it owned the place. If he had hands, he definitely would have opened that door and went inside.

"This is our current situation in front of our house," Becker says from inside her car, filming the scene.

@nbcsouthflorida

A Florida woman never imagined that upon returning home from work, a massive gator would block her entry. Jennifer Becker was forced to cautiously record the scene from inside her car and warn her neighbors to keep their distance. She then captured it on video appearing to knock on her next-door neighbor's front door. #florida #gator #neighbors #caughtoncamera

♬ original sound - NBCSouthFlorida - NBCSouthFlorida

"Don't come this way. There's a gator right here in our front yard. Don't come this way."

The gator isn't trying to get your attention. It's not skulking around nervously. It's just... there. Massive. Completely unbothered. Gatorspreading—blocking the path between Becker and her front door.

"I don't know who to call," Becker says, the reality of her situation sinking in.

The video shows us what transpired next: The gator casually strolled over to her neighbor's house, sauntered up to the front porch and appeared to approach the front door like he was expected. Not aggressively. Not frantically. It just walked right up to the door like it had an appointment.

The whole scene looks completely unbelievable. This prehistoric creature wandering through a residential neighborhood, checking out houses like a prospective buyer at an open house tour.

The comment section captured the absurdity of the situation:

"You call a realtor and a moving truck."

"He just wants to talk about your car's extended warranty 😅"

"He's selling Girl Scout cookies ✨"

"He is looking for the button to ring the bell 😅"

"Excuse me sir do you have moment with our lord saver Godzilla."

"That's the HOA PRESIDENT."

The lightheartedness of the comments masks a serious reality: These kind of interactions are becoming increasingly common in Florida, especially this time of year.

Why Mating Season Is Pushing Gators Into Neighborhoods

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, alligator mating season is now and it runs from April through June. And that's exactly why and when situations like Jennifer Becker's happen most frequently. It’s just looking for a good time.

During mating season, alligators become significantly more active and territorial. They're moving around more, searching for mates, and establishing their dominance. Larger male gators will run the smaller gators out of established territories, forcing them into new areas—including residential neighborhoods like this.

The Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida reports that Florida is home to a whopping estimated 1.3 million alligators. They can be found in nearly almost every freshwater body in the state. During breeding season, alligators will travel longer distances than usual, sometimes even crossing roads or showing up in places where people don't usually see them.

Country 99.1 WQIK notes that the increase in sightings during this time of year is linked to natural behavioral changes rather than a rise in aggression. Gators aren't necessarily more dangerous right now—they're just more visible and more mobile because they have to be. They can’t find a mate by just sitting at home in their body of water, they need to be seen to find a mate. There’s no dating apps for gators.

That being said, officials emphasize several critical safety measures:

Only swim in designated areas and only during daylight hours.

Never (ever) approach or feed an alligator (it's illegal and teaches them to associate humans with food).

Keep all pets on leashes and away from shorelines—they too closely resemble natural prey.

If you do happen upon an unusually bold gator or one posing a threat, call FWC's Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).

Luckily for Jennifer Becker, the gator eventually moved on when he realized no one was home. But the video serves as a reminder: During mating season in Florida, sometimes the wildlife decides your front yard looks like prime real estate.

7 Dog Breeds That Struggle in Apartments, According to Experts

Sat, 05/09/2026 - 5:10am

It’s easy to assume that all small dogs are a great fit for apartment living. People think that if a pup is on the tinier side and doesn't take up much physical space, then they won't mind a limited floor plan when it comes to their living arrangements. Though, if your home is in an apartment and you want to become a pet parent, keep in mind that the size of your future furry companion is not the best indicator of how well a dog will actually handle urban living.

While a dog's small size may make them physically suited for tight quarters, dog experts explain that many compact dog breeds come with big personalities, strong instincts and high energy needs that don’t always align with shared walls and limited space. Minimal exercise, structure or stimulation can cause some small dog breeds to develop behaviors like barking, restlessness or even destructive chewing.

That’s why temperament and breed instincts matter just as much as size when it comes to finding the right pet. Here are seven small dog breeds that struggle in apartment settings, according to pet experts. Plus, what to consider before bringing one home. That way, you'll know what dogs are not the best fit for you.

7 Worst Dog Breeds for Apartments

Not all small dog breeds are well suited for apartment living, even though their size might suggest otherwise. Factors like high energy levels, barking tendencies, and strong instincts can make certain dogs more challenging in smaller spaces. Here are 7 small dog breeds experts say you may want to avoid if you live in an apartment.

Jack Russell Terrier A lively Jack Russell Terrier, bred for constant movement and work.

The Jack Russell Terrier may be small in size, but it’s widely known for its intense energy, intelligence, and nonstop activity. Because of this, experts say they are among the dog breeds that can struggle in apartment living or other small spaces.

“They need more exercise and mental stimulation than people realize,” says Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, veterinarian with TelaVets.com. “Without it, they can get destructive in a small apartment.”

Due to their working-dog background, Jack Russells are built for endurance, problem-solving, and constant movement. In compact indoor environments, those instincts don’t have many outlets, which can lead to frustration or unwanted behaviors if their needs aren’t met. Trainers often recommend multiple daily walks, puzzle toys, and structured play sessions to help manage their energy levels. Without enough stimulation, apartment life can quickly feel restrictive for this highly active breed..

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Energetic, fearless, quirky
  • Height: 10–12 inches
  • Weight: 9–15 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12–14 years
Dachshund A loud and active dog breed needs lots of exercise.

Dachshunds are affectionate, energetic dogs, but their alert nature can make apartment living more demanding than many owners expect, which is why experts say they are one of the worst dogs to get for apartment living.

Originally bred to hunt burrowing animals, Dachshunds are quick to react to sounds outside doors and walls. Hallway noise or footsteps can easily trigger barking, which won’t exactly make you the most-loved neighbor in the apartment building. “This quality of excessive barking, especially when bored, under-exercised or left alone, may make them not ideal dogs for apartment dwellers,” says Caitlin Cruz, head dog trainer at Pupford.

On top of that, these pups also aren't ones who want to sit inside all day. Instead, they need space to run and play, which apartments don't always offer. "They also need a lot of exercise because they have a long back,” Rakestraw says. Their elongated spine, which is prone to injury from jumping on and off furniture, requires careful exercise management.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Curious, friendly, spunky
  • Height: 8-9 inches
  • Weight: 16-32 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12–16 years
Miniature Pinscher Breeds with big personalities do better in larger homes.

Getty Images Anita Kot

Often described as “big dogs in small bodies,” Miniature Pinschers are highly alert, energetic, and always on the move. Without enough exercise, structure, and mental stimulation, they can quickly become restless and difficult to manage in apartment living or small spaces. “This can lead to a lot of barking and destruction of items in an apartment,” says Sally Grottini, dog behavior expert at JustAnswer.

Because these are high-energy dog breeds and have a strong need for stimulation, Miniature Pinschers thrive with firm boundaries, daily physical activity, and consistent mental enrichment. Without these outlets, apartment environments can feel restrictive and may amplify unwanted behaviors.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Fearless, proud, fun-loving
  • Height: 10-12.5 inches
  • Weight: 8-10 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12-16 years

Related: No. 1 Least Expensive Dog Breed Is a Cute, Affectionate Companion

Beagle A vocal Beagle resting outside.

Getty Images Michelle Alexander

Beagles are friendly, social dogs that make excellent family companions, but they can be more challenging in apartment living or small spaces than many people expect. “They are natural scent dogs, and this makes them want to track where a scent is,” Grottini explains. “Their job is to alert their owner by barking and howling. This can be very annoying in apartment complexes.”

Because of their strong scent-driven instincts, Beagles are easily distracted by smells in the environment and may become vocal when stimulated. They also tend to experience bursts of high energy, often in the evening, which can be difficult to manage in compact indoor spaces without enough room to move and explore.

In addition, Beagles can be prone to separation anxiety, which may lead to increased barking or howling when left alone. Without adequate exercise, mental stimulation, and outdoor access, their natural behaviors can become harder to manage in apartment settings, which is why trainers say they are one dog breed that struggles in apartment living.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Curious, friendly, merry
  • Height: 13 & under or 13-15 inches
  • Weight: Under 20 pounds (13 & under) or 20-30 pounds (13-15 inches)
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years
Chihuahua An alert Chihuahua overwhelmed by all the noise in an apartment building.

Getty Images Yana Iskayeva

When it comes to dog breeds to avoid in apartments, Chihuahuas are one. While their size is apartment-friendly, their big personalities is what makes them struggle. In fact, these pups often come with a big alert system packed into a very small frame and they can also be territorial and reactive. While that makes them a great small guard dog, it doesn't make them a good apartment pet.

Chihuahuas become protective or reactive to unfamiliar sounds. "If they live in a busy apartment building, they might bark at elevators, footsteps, doors closing or visitors,” Rakestraw says. "The key with Chihuahuas is to carefully socialize and train them," Rakestraw explains. Without proper socialization, everyday apartment noise can feel threatening to them and cause frequent barking.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Charming, graceful, sassy
  • Height: 5-8 inches
  • Weight: Not exceeding 6 pounds
  • Lifespan: 14–16 years
Yorkshire Terrier Even Yorkies can struggle living in apartments.

Getty Images Cris Cantón

Yorkshire Terriers are small, but they have bold, alert personalities and are highly sensitive to changes in their environment. In apartment settings, this can lead to frequent barking at hallway noise, movement outside doors, or other everyday sounds that larger living spaces naturally diffuse.

Without enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent structure, Yorkies can become restless or overstimulated in compact homes. “Yorkies can be great companions, but they’re still terriers,” Rakestraw says. “They tend to bark frequently or get restless in an apartment if they’re not given enough activity and routine.” Due to this, these cuties are sadly one of the worst dog breeds for apartments.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Bright, spunky, loving
  • Height: 7–8 inches
  • Weight: 7 pounds
  • Lifespan: 11–15 years
Pomeranian Pomeranians are one dog breed that may not suit apartment living.

Getty Images eAlisa

Pomeranians are fluffy, energetic dogs full of personality, but they also have a well-known reputation for being vocal. As a result, even small breeds like Pomeranians may not always adapt easily to apartment living, especially in buildings with shared walls and frequent noise.

“Pomeranians are tiny, but they’re barkers,” Rakestraw says. “They can be sensitive to apartment noises and may develop a habit of barking at neighbors, delivery people, or sounds in the hallway.”

While their alert nature makes them excellent watchdogs, it can become challenging in apartment environments where constant triggers and limited space amplify reactive behavior. Over time, this can create stress for both the dog and surrounding neighbors.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Inquisitive, lively, bold
  • Height: 6-7 inches
  • Weight: 3-7 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12-16 years

This Squad of 4 Dachshunds Walks Like They’ve Got Adult Problems

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 7:20pm

Dachshunds are one of the funniest dog breeds alive because they are built like novelty items and carry themselves like middle management. They are long, low, dramatic, and permanently moving as if someone just told them there has been a scheduling error. No breed that tiny should have that much urgency in their body, and yet here they are, stomping through life like they have three meetings, a blood pressure issue, and exactly 12 minutes to fix both.

This video is that energy times four.

@oliveyoufreddie

They move like the rent is due 🐾 #busy #runway #hustle #dog #dachshund

♬ original sound - not chris olsen

We see a whole squad of Dachshunds marching through the park, all pulling tight on their leashes, moving fast with that signature little bounce that makes it look like the rent is due, the power bill is late, and someone has just texted “we need to talk.” The caption says exactly that: “They move like the rent is due 🐾.” And once you see it, you can't unsee it.

The video caption makes it even better: “Someone said that Dachshunds walk like they're late for work and now I can't unsee it.”

Correct.

Because these four aren't strolling. They're not casually enjoying a nature outing. They are commuting. There is purpose in every tiny footstep. The little synchronized urgency of it all is so absurdly specific that it stops being just “cute dog video” and becomes an entire working-class narrative.

One comment says, “Truth. It’s either 100 mph or 0 mph 🤷‍♀️,” and that is one of the most accurate summaries of Dachshunds I have ever seen. There's no in-between setting with these dogs. They are either racing through the world like tiny sausages with unresolved debts, or they are fully horizontal and unavailable for comment.

And honestly, I get it. My dog Lola only knows one speed, and that speed is trying to break the sound barrier on a daily basis. So I deeply respect an animal who treats every walk like the opening scene of an action movie.

This clip is simple, visual, and immediately funny. Four Dachshunds. One park path. Maximum urgency. Zero explanation. Sometimes that's all the internet really needs.

Why Dachshunds Walk So Fast on Leash

Dachshunds may be tiny, but they are not low-energy dogs. The AKC describes them as bold, clever, and lively, and notes that they were bred to hunt badgers, which explains a lot about that forward-pulling, no-time-to-explain attitude.

That quick, determined walk often comes from a mix of excitement, prey-drive wiring, and pure Dachshund self-importance. In other words, they are not “just walking fast.” They're pursuing a mission only they understand, and frankly, it's rude of us to question it.

Golden Retriever Has the Sweetest Reaction Whenever He Meets Little Kids

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 6:55pm

At first, it just looks like a normal meet-and-greet… a couple of little kids, a friendly dog, nothing out of the ordinary.

Then you realize this Golden Retriever is having a full emotional event about it. Like tail going nonstop, eyes locked in, entire body committed to this moment like he’s been waiting all day for it.

TikTok user @the3retrievers_ shared a clip of their Golden meeting two little girls, and the reaction is immediate. He’s wagging like crazy, gently licking, leaning in for pets—and when they start to walk away, he just follows them like, “Wait… we’re not done here?”

It’s not even subtle. It’s like he genuinely believes small humans were created specifically for him.

Viewers Were Completely Melted:

• “He probably thinks kids exist to give him pets and hugs.”
• “Best breed ever.”
• “Awww, such a good dog.”
• “What a gentle big boy.”
• “This is just too sweet.”

And honestly, that first comment feels accurate.

Because this isn’t just friendliness—it’s recognition. Like he’s met his people.

My Pomeranian, Kingston, would also follow them… but for entirely different, much louder reasons. Or because he thinks they have snacks. This is the calm, wholesome version.

This is kind of their whole thing.

• Goldens are naturally gentle and patient.
• They’re highly social and love interaction.
• They tend to read human emotions really well.
Physical affection is basically their favorite activity.
• They’re eager to please, which makes them more tolerant and calm.

So when they meet kids?

It’s not just excitement—it’s like a perfect match.

Even the sweetest dogs need good boundaries and gentle handling.

• Show kids how to approach slowly and calmly.
• Avoid sudden movements or loud noises around dogs.
Teach gentle petting instead of grabbing or pulling.
• Let the dog come to them first when possible.
• Always supervise interactions, especially with younger children.
• Explain basic dog body language so they know when a pup needs space.

Moments like this are adorable… but they’re also a great reminder that good interactions go both ways.

Rare Hot Pink Hummingbird Is Pure Fairy-Tale Magic

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 6:00pm

Spring is my favorite season, as a lady who loves birds. I have several, and we have an acre of land with a whole lot of trees: it's basically bird city in my backyard. One bird I am working on finding better ways to see more of is the Hummingbird! They're my favorite.

Recently, one bird lover showed off a Hummingbird that I'd love to see, and he just turned up at her bird feeder! She was so lucky to see him, and she was kind enough to slow it down so everyone could get a look at his awesome, hot pink coloring:

@crystals.p.o.v

I slowed it down so we can admire this beauty #hummingbird #bird #birdsoftiktok #backyardbirds #backyardvibes

♬ Sneaky Shenanigans - Solis

Crystal's POV includes this gorgeous Hummingbird, so I need to see more of her POV at once. I never get to see Hummingbirds! This one in particular is just so cute, with his little Barbie pink head. It's really interesting, because the color changes at certain angles.

From the side, you can still see some of that purple/pink shimmer, though it looks a little darker. When he turns toward the camera, though, wow! This is Barbie's dreamhouse, but on a bird.

Related: Woman Finds Bird Nest In Trash Can and Finds the Fuzziest Babies Inside

Though it's a little hard to tell what kind of Hummingbird this is from the video alone, it looks like it could be an Anna's Hummingbird.

While the species isn't uncommon at all, seeing one with an entirely pink head is definitely a rare treat! If that's not enough, though, there are other Hummingbirds who love to visit her garden:

♬ Art of Now (Nature Sounds) - Dennis Korn

She has several of the cutest Hummingbird feeders ever in her garden, where she also has a bunch of beautiful flowers. No wonder the Hummingbirds love it there!

Where Are Anna's Hummingbirds Most Common?

If you want to try to find a Hummingbird who has an entirely pink head, too, looking out for a mature Anna's Hummingbird is the way to go. Typically, they just have little patches of pink/orange/red on their throats.

A male Anna's Hummingbird with a pink throat.

Anna's Hummingbirds are found along the Pacific Coast, and they're easiest to spot in the springtime. They're a mid-sized Hummingbird, and they're most attracted to:

  • Red flowers.
  • High-producing nectar flowers, like Jasmine.
  • Certain types of berry plants, like gooseberries and red currants.

You can also go the typical "feeder" route with a nectar mixture inside, but if you can swing it, having some natural flowers as well will help your chances. Having a mix of both is great, too!

Attract Painted Buntings to Your Yard with Amazon's Highly-Rated Bird Feeder & Seed

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 3:18pm

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

It's the most wonderful time of year — the season for beautiful painted buntings! If you live in the right part of the country, then you've no doubt been seeing friends and strangers post on social media about all the gorgeous painted buntings in their yard. (I know I've been seeing a lot of posts.) If you want to improve your chances of attracting these beautiful flying rainbows, then we've got the details for you right here on the best seed and feeders.

First, here's a quick rundown of what to get, followed by more details below.

The Best Way to Attract Painted Buntings

Painted Buntings are beautiful rainbow-colored birds. They're medium-sized, and the males are so vibrant with their bright blue heads and multiple shades of red, orange, green, and yellow feathers. The females are a more subtle green-yellow color.

If you want Painted Buntings, first make sure they visit your region. They are seen most commonly in the south-central U.S., typically from North Carolina to central Florida along the Atlantic coast. But they do travel west from there too (as I've been hearing of lots of sightings in Texas recently.)

According to The Helpful Birder, the best way to attract painted buntings is by supplying them with their favorite food: white millet seeds (also called white proso millet.) But because so many larger birds also like this seed (and they may scare off little buntings), it's a good idea to provide them with a caged feeder if you can. These are simply feeders made for smaller songbirds. They're basically a cage that enclosed a tube or dish that holds seed inside. The wires of the cage let songbirds fit through, but larger birds and other predators can't.

Now here are some great options you can get from Amazon, based on your budget.

Kingsyard Cage Bird Feeder with Tray for $28 on Amazon

Courtesy of Amazon

Shop it!

This cage bird feeder is made for bluebirds, and since they're a little bigger than buntings, your target bird will definitely fit. It comes in Brown, Blue or Green and is designed to be squirrel resistant and easy to refill and clean. It's made of durable metal material and great for year-round use. The bottom tray can be filled with seeds, and the tray has drainage holes in case it rains.

This has a 4.4 out of 5-star rating on Amazon. One buyer writes, "Great sturdy feeder. Birds love it. Brings all the bluebirds just ad meal worms for them! Holds a day or 2 worth of sunflower seeds or meal worms. Easy to fill and clean."

Wild Wings Cedar Hanging Tray for $17 on Amazon

Courtesy of Amazon

Shop the cedar feeder!

If you don't have the budget for a caged feeder, this hanging tray is an excellent alternative. In fact, two reviewers specifically mention that it attracted Painted Buntings!

One buyer writes, "This morning I looked out my window and 4 Painted buntings were all sitting around the edge of tray feasting! This really is a bird attaching magnet!"

Another writes, "I love this bird feeder. We get cardinals, titmouse, painted buntings and doves to the feeder."

It's a simple but effective feeder that measure 10x10 inches. It's easy to fill and clean and accommodates birds of all sizes. It also has rain drainage to keep seeds dry, and is made of durable material.

Pennington Pride Wild Finch Blend Wild Bird Seed for $16 on Amazon

Courtesy of Amazon

Shop the seed!

I'm recommending this Pennington blend because the first seed on the list of ingredients is "white proso millet seeds," followed by other types, along with vitamin supplements and more. If you're looking for a less expensive bird seed with buntings' favorite food, then this would be a great start.

Cole's MI20 White Millet Bird Seed, 20 Pound for $46 on Amazon

Courtesy of Amazon

Shop the white millet seed!

If your budget's a little bigger, consider this one. The only ingredient is white proso millet, a bunting's favorite food. It comes out to $2.30 a pound, which is less than $1 more per pound than the seed listed above. So if you have the budget, you might want to try this one!

The Bottom Line

Painted Buntings love white millet seed. And the two feeders recommended above are ones either designed specifically for birds their size, or known to attract buntings by other birders. If you're wanting these beautiful rainbow-hued birds in your yard, then give these options a try!

Feral Cat Refuses to Return to the Wild After Falling in Love With Her Rescuer

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 2:00pm

Feral cats do not get enough love. While they can be dangerous at times, and approaching them should only be done by people with experience (for everyone's safety), these cats deserve happy, healthy lives just like any other cat in the world!

One feral cat was going to find a way to have the happy life she wanted, no matter what. She was picked up by a kind community worker volunteering with a TNVR program... Only the "R" part was really not her jam:

@sew_catty

#tnr #spayandneuter #catsoftiktok

♬ original sound - The Simple Life

Angela has dealt with a lot of feral cats in her time, but this particular case was a rarity. Most of the time, these cats can't wait to get back to their lives on the streets. They're not used to life with humans. They don't want to be with us.

When it came to this cat, though, things were a lot different. She just wouldn't quit, even after her meds had worn off. It was time for her to go home, or back to the lack thereof, but she just... Couldn't. She didn't want to leave her favorite human behind.

What was Angela supposed to do, just shove this sweet baby back out into the wild, kicking and screaming? No way! Naturally, she decided to keep this sweet girl safe in the way that's most comfortable for her. She's chilling in the backyard:

@sew_catty

♬ Fairytale (From "Shrek") - Geek Music

I really like that she's not forcing the cat to come inside before she's ready. She keeps her in her yard, so she can feed and care for her, and so far, the kitty has stayed put! Eventually, she might come inside, but it's not time for that just yet.

TNVR Is Life-Saving For Cats

TNVR stands for Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release (or Return, depending on who you ask). The last part is the one the cat in these videos wasn't fond of. She's a lady in love! She doesn't want to go back out on the street!

Feral kittens eating together.

There are organizations all over the world that focus on TNVR, and for good reason. It's unrealistic to think you could find a home (or even shelter space) for every feral cat, but TNVR helps:

  • Prevent pregnancy and population growth.
  • Quell aggression, since neutered cats are often a little more docile.
  • Stop the spread of diseases.

Most of the time, it goes very smoothly. This time, though... Not so much. That's her cat now!

Beggin' Just Named Every Dog a Winner in This Hilarious New U.S. Soccer Contest

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 11:48am

With the World Cup on the horizon, the "sports pet" trend is exploding. We recently saw Adidas launch a dedicated World Cup pet jersey collection, and now, another major brand is trying to use the World Cup for branding.

Beggin' has officially teamed up with U.S. Soccer to become the organization's official dog treat, and they are celebrating with a contest where "participation trophies" are actually worth something.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

While many contests have a catch, this one seems straightforward. Every single dog that joins gets free treats. That would surely make our furry companions happy, right?

Simple Idea, Happy Dogs

Courtesy Purina

Beggin' has a straightforward idea. They are building what they call the ultimate roster of dogs, inspired by a soccer starting lineup.

For the contest, the brand launched a Crest Bacon Flavor Dog Treats, shaped like the team crest. They are made with real bacon as the main ingredient.

How Can You Participate

Courtesy Purina

The process is simple and requires almost zero effort. All you have to do is head to the Beggin' XI Contest Page, upload a photo of your dog, and submit a short description of your dog. The contest lasts until May 17. After that, the company will choose eleven finalists to create the official Beggin' XI lineup. The public voting will determine the winner.

The winner will get a once-in-a-lifetime flyaway experience to a U.S. Soccer match this summer during the World Cup. And a team prize box to enjoy while watching the game.

The company encourages pet parents to write as witty and as fun information as they can. The goal is to identify what makes your dog feel soccer-worthy. Some great photo ideas include goofy expressions, action shots, or a face that looks like it belongs on the field.

Here is the best part: even dogs that will not make the final roster will walk away with free treats. That makes this contest feel less competitive and more like a nationwide excuse to show off your dog online and score some free treats.

Even Celebrities Are Part of It

Famous actor Brendan Hunt, best known for Ted Lasso, is hosting the campaign.

He says the contest is "the crossover event I didn't know I needed." So, are you ready to put your dog in a fun and creative campaign?

We treat our dogs like part of the family. Beggin' gives them jerseys and positions. This is one soccer game where there are no losers. Every dog is a winner.

This Chihuahua and Dachshund Duo Are Served a Puppy 'Pawella'—and It's Just Adorable

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 10:55am

If you're hungry, get ready to feel even hungrier. This dog parent has prepared a delicious, home-cooked meal for her dogs, Cedric and Edith, a dachshund and a Chihuahua mix. The meal is a puppy "pawella." An adapted meal for puppies inspired by the traditional Spanish dish, paella, which is typically prepared in a wide, shallow pan, featuring rice, vegetables, and various types of protein, such as chicken and seafood.

In the video, Cedric and Edith patiently wait as their food is prepared — they even make time for a quick nap while the meal cooks. Adorable, right?

Cedric and Edith's mother starts by seasoning the chicken and shrimp with turmeric and beet powder. First, she adds the chicken to the pan and, once it's cooked, adds it to a plate. Then she repeats the process with the shrimp. Once the chicken and shrimp are cooked, she uses the same pan to sauté sliced bell peppers, rice, and riced cauliflower, adding water to the mixture. Finally, she adds the cooked chicken and seasons the ingredients with "doggy nutrients."

Related: These Adorable Pit Bulls Are Having a Banquet for Breakfast—and People are Obsessed

While she brings the mixture to a boil, the puppies are served strawberry "pawgria," inspired by the Spanish and Portuguese sangria. The original recipe calls for red wine and chopped fruit, but for Cedric and Edith, their mother served a dog-appropriate recipe: beet, coconut water and strawberry. They even had their drink in a little wine glass—how cute is that? And Cedric seemed to love the recipe because when he finished his drink, he even had some of Edith's glass. Sharing is caring!

When the ingredients are ready, Cedric and Edith's mother garnishes the pan with the cooked shrimp and mussels. She closes the pan to finish cooking the meal, then sprinkles basil on the dish. The puppies are then served on a little plate, appropriate for their size.

The Dog's Table Cookbook

Cedric and Edith's mother, Joelle Jay, is a musician, designer, author, and content creator. On YouTube, her channel @itsthecedlife has over 200,000 subscribers, and she posts videos about her puppies' nutrition and the elaborate, delicious meals she cooks for them. Alongside R.A. Young, a technologist, researcher, author and content creator, she wrote The Dog's Table, a cookbook with over 120 home-cooked recipes for dogs.

The recipes are balanced and healthy for dogs, and are all approved by Cedric and Edith. Given their refined taste, we can assume these recipes are incredible.

Sneaky Golden Retriever Tries to Scam Stranger Into Buying Him a Cookie

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 10:10am

Our canines can be quite convincing when they want something. They give us those sweet eyes and heart-melting expressions to sweet-talk us into an extra treat or more time outside — and it usually works. Some fur babies are master manipulators when they have a specific objective.

Charlie the Golden Retriever seems to be an expert at this practice. The gorgeous Golden spotted his mark in a local café and worked his magic to get another bakery item.

@laurenandcody

He sees a kind stranger and the performance begins

♬ original sound - Lauren and Charlie

In the TikTok from @laurenandcody, Charlie approached a young man sitting in a local coffee shop and showed off his sweet personality. Yet the clever canine was up to something.

"POV Your Golden Retriever manipulates a random kind man into buying him his third cookie of the day," the onscreen text explained.

The man smiled at Charlie and seemed unaware that there was a con job at play.

"He wants to see if he could try to get you to get him a cookie because he knows I'm done now," Charlie's mom warned, telling her pup, "No, you already had two!"

The young man stood up, so Charlie took another shot at getting that cookie. The fur baby poured on the charm with his tail in full wag mode, hoping the customer would cave. Though Charlie's mom revealed the dog's motive, the nice man found Charlie's methods quite amusing and bought him a cookie.

"How does he do this?" his mom asked, bewildered. "He convinces everyone. He's so manipulative."

She thanked the generous cookie giver profusely as he gave Charlie his beloved treat. "That's so nice of you," she remarked.

Followers admitted that they would've fallen for Charlie's tactics as well.

"Who could resist that face?!" one wrote.

"Not gonna lie, I'd probably empty my pockets if I was there," another remarked.

"He is smart — I would buy him a cookie,' someone revealed.

Can Dogs Manipulate Humans?

Our dogs most likely know exactly what they're doing when they give us those big, pleading eyes and soft whine that goes straight to the heart. Fur babies tend to lay it on extra thick with that look and those whimpers when we're eating or they want to go outside.

Related: Golden Retriever Banished to Bedroom Has Uncontrollable Need To ‘Supervise’ Maintenance Man

Why do they do it? Because it works! And they know it. So yes, dogs can totally manipulate humans to do certain things for them, but we're the ones who fall for it every time. Yet in the big scheme of things, it's totally worth it to see them so happy.

Sweet Cat Trying to ‘Pet the Baby’ Just Won’t Quit

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 10:00am

Bringing home a baby is hard and scary for a million reasons, but for people who also have pets, one of the biggest reasons is our furry friends. You just have no idea if things will go well or not, and they're the two beings you love most in this world!

Luckily, one new family has had exceptional luck with getting their cat and their baby to bond. Honestly, it might be going too well. The cat will not stop trying to pet the baby:

@aeiou682

Literally had been home for less than an hour before being turned into a bop it by her fur brother 👊🏻 @sverdlin kitties #newborn #catsoftiktok #babygirl #bopit #trending

♬ original sound - Amy

Amy and her new baby had apparently been home for less than an hour when her furry brother decided to try to pet her. As soon as she put the baby down in her crib, he was sticking his paws through the bars. He was probably thinking to himself, "This is a really big kitten!"

He's being gentle about it, which is good: this baby is probably not even a week old yet. Getting hit with a cat paw would really hurt! Amy only lets him near the baby under supervision, though, just to make sure things don't go wrong.

Related: Rescue Cat With ‘Sea Glass’ Green Eyes Couldn’t Be More Gorgeous

Though this is the first baby the cat has encountered, he's been a big brother for a while. There are a couple of other cats in the house, and evidently, he wasn't this nice to them when they were babies:

@aeiou682

They’ll be friends one day #catsoftiktok #kittensoftiktok #wicked @Yori Sverdlin

♬ What Is This Feeling? - Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo

The reason for that is pretty simple: human babies don't hit back. Kittens hit back. Hopefully, they get along better now that there's a baby in the mix!

Cats Can Be Gentle With Babies

There are typically two types of cat/baby introductions that go viral: really sweet ones and really spicy ones. There are also a lot of cats who fall somewhere in the middle, though those aren't typically as easy to find.

A cat relaxing on a carpet.

Image via Shutterstock / Shawna and Damien Richard

If you want your cat to be gentle when they meet your baby, you need to be extremely cautious and on top of the entire situation at all times. The key is to prevent:

  • Accidents.
  • Aggression.
  • Fear.

One of the biggest risks in this situation is that your cat will get too close or move too fast or something, which will freak you out. You'll yell, or swat, or shove the cat, purely out of instinct, and that could legitimately sour the relationship forever. Keep them separated by at least a few feet of space, just to be safe!

He Saved a Belgian Malinois From California Traffic, but a Health Diagnosis Has Him Torn

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 9:48am

Some promises are easy to keep. "I'll never eat gas station sushi again." "I'm going to the gym on Monday." But one man in Bellflower, Calif., made a promise that felt foolproof until it wasn't. He promised himself not to get another dog unless one found him.

He'd had a German shepherd for 13 years. When that dog died, the grief didn't leave room for another. So he drew a line and meant it.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Then, on the drive home from work, a Belgian Malinois came sprinting through traffic. He watched her weave between cars, close enough to get clipped, and pulled over. Thirty minutes later, he finally caught her. He posted the Ring camera footage to track down the owner, took her to the vet, and checked for a chip.

There was nothing more than a young dog with nowhere to go, and a man who was trying to keep his promise. She found him. The question now is whether he keeps her.

What Happens Next?

He shared his thoughts with the Reddit community. As he explained in the comments, he was secretly hoping that an older, sleepy little couch companion would find him. But it turns out, he got a young, high-energy breed.

He was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Thanksgiving Day. He explained that he has two more treatments, but the scans are looking good right now.

His biggest dilemma is what happens if he gets sick in the future? Comments filled quickly, and many people thought the same thing: this didn't feel random.

One commenter said, "She found you." Another added, "Sometimes dogs come into our life for a job and that job can include healing."

Related: A Rare K-9 Emergency Just Led to a First-of-Its-Kind Moment in the Sky

A Gift of Healing?

Sometimes, one single moment can change your whole day. For this guy, that moment was finding a young girl on the road.

At first, he panicked, as the dog was weaving near cars, close enough that her life was in danger. There's something darkly funny about the universe sending a Belgian Malinois to someone who secretly hoped to get a lazy dog.

The dilemma is hard to answer: Do you keep the dog that chose you, even if the timing feels impossible?

Rescue dogs have a strange way of giving people purpose back. As one commenter said, "That dog could be your best friend in a year's time."

Taking Care of a High-Energy Dog

Belgian Malinois are some of the most active dogs in the canine kingdom. Brilliant and intense, these athletic dogs thrive on structure and purpose.

Knowing what is ahead, the guy is torn between the two options. Should he accept the risk, knowing that he might get sicker, or try to find her a new home?

Taking care of a high-energy dog like the Belgian Malinois requires plenty of time, effort, and patience. These dogs need mental stimulation as much as physical activity. Some activities that help tire them out include active games like fetch, tug of war and flirt poles or mental stimulation activities like agility training.

And they make some of the best companions for hiking, jogging and running.

Raw Chicken Dog Food Sold Nationwide Is Being Recalled for a Potentially Deadly Reason—Here's What to Know

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 9:40am

Just like what foods we put in our own bodies is important, what our pets eat has a major impact on their health too. And no matter how diligent you are in sourcing only the finest, most natural ingredients, there’s always a chance something can slip through the cracks due to mass production and general human error.

That said, pet parents are being asked to practice caution as a popular pet food brand voluntarily recalls a number of its raw chicken dog food products. Citing contamination concerns involving a potentially deadly bacteria, Albright’s Raw Pet Food has identified a single lot of its Chicken Recipe for Dogs Complete and Balanced meals as potentially at risk, and the company is encouraging shoppers to refrain from feeding it to their pets.

Dog Owners Warned After Raw Chicken Pet Food Tests Positive for Salmonella Albright's Raw Pet Food – Chicken Recipe for Dogs Compete and Balanced Formula

FDA / Albright's Raw Pet Food

The products being recalled are sold as frozen 1-pound bricks in clear vacuum packaging and distributed in 30-pound cases. The recall follows routine sampling conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), during which product samples were tested for Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli.

One lot tested positive for Salmonella in a composite sample. The contaminated lot was identified as the below:

  • Brand: Albright's Raw Pet Food Chicken Recipe for Dogs Complete and Balanced Formula
  • Size: 1-pound pouch distributed in a 30-pound case
  • Best Buy/Expiration: 28-Apr-27
  • Lot Code: C001730

The at-risk products were distributed directly to consumers nationwide and to a small number of retailers in Massachusetts, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wisconsin and New York, as well as through direct online sales. At the moment, no illnesses linked to the recall have been reported, though the investigation is still ongoing in conjunction with the FDA.

What Exactly Is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a potentially dangerous bacteria that can cause illness in pets and can even be transmitted to humans. Pets infected with Salmonella may show signs of lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain, though some dogs may show no symptoms at all. Even asymptomatic pets can still shed Salmonella through their feces and saliva, potentially spreading it to people or other animals.

If your pet has consumed a product infected with Salmonella and starts showing symptoms, it’s encouraged that you contact your veterinarian immediately. That said, humans are just as much at risk, as Salmonella can be contracted through handling contaminated pet food, touching infected pets or simply coming into contact with contaminated surfaces like bowls, utensils and countertops. If you begin experiencing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, it’s recommended that you contact a healthcare provider immediately.

What Pet Owners Should Do Next

As the recall progresses, it should be noted that the level of bacterial presence has not yet been determined and third-party testing is still pending. As the data continues to be evaluated, Albright’s Raw Pet Food is proceeding with the voluntary recall in order to ensure the highest level of safety and transparency.

Deaf Cat's Adorable 'Pokémon Greeting Ritual' for Mom Is Melting Hearts

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 9:20am

Coming home to a happy pet is one of the best feelings in the world. Whether it's a tail-wagging, happy-hopping reaction from dogs or a cute trilling from cats, their love for us is unrivaled.

Otter may be deaf, but this Black Cat has his own special way of showing Mom the love. He doesn't need the ability to hear to give Mom the sweetest "hellllooo" because his unique Pokémon greeting is total cuteness overload as it is.

In terms of being adorable, Otter's score is off the charts! How great it must feel for Mom to walk into any room at any time and get this kind of warm welcome. Being a deaf kitty doesn't get in the way of this sweet boy telling the world how he feels about his number one lady (swoon)!

It's no huge shock that the heartwarming post had everyone feeling all the things. Hundreds of Otters fans chimed in to give him some love, with many of them noting how precious his little trills are—and I 100% agree! It's one of the cutest sounds a gentlemanly, polite cat like Otter can make, and yet, somehow, he makes the trill even better!

The rescue cat left an imprint on the world the moment Mom started sharing his journey, and I think much of it has to do with the variety of sounds he makes when he realizes Mom's beside him. Take a listen to this throwback clip, volume way up, and try not to fall in love.

Communicating with a deaf kitty takes slightly more care than that of a feline with full use of their hearing, so as not to startle them.

They're smart, which means you can train them to learn sign language through hand signals for the basics (eat, come, etc.). While teaching, practice gentle stomps to create vibrations on the floor—or tap a nearby table or chair—so they know you're there.

Flashlights and laser pointers can grab their attention, but you can also turn on a light switch every time you enter the room, but make sure to approach them from the front. Touch and scent go a long way and help your deaf kitty recognize when you're in their vicinity. Bonus: All of these things help strengthen the bond between the two of you.

I can't imagine anything better than a cat like Otter greeting me each day. He's a special boy and Mom's one lucky gal!

Great Dane Puppy’s Paws Are Already Bigger Than Some Dogs’ Heads

Fri, 05/08/2026 - 9:00am

Great Danes are some of my favorite dogs to admire from afar, and up close whenever I get the chance, though it's pretty rare. I could never have one of them in my own home, but I'll be dreaming about it forever!

The puppy stage for Great Danes is especially cute. They have such huge paws, and absolutely no idea what to do with them most of the time. Right now, one of these pups is only a few months old, but his paws are the size of some other dogs' heads!

Whelen the Great Dane is cracking me up. I need them to try to find shoes that fit him! I just know it would be so hard! He's only 4 months old, but that means he's in his Great Dane Puppy Prime. He hits all the right notes:

  • Huge paws.
  • Floppy, massive ears.
  • Big lip flaps.

He's only going to get bigger from here, and that means he's going to get even more awkward. There will be many more months where his paws are bigger than they need to be! I bet his little stumbles are so cute!

Whelen is such a puppy right now. Nothing can ever be easy, which is tough for everyone, but I feel like it's probably a little harder when your 4-month-old puppy is the size of a small horse. He's recently discovered every puppy's worse nemesis:

The Doorstop DJ Discovery is the worst. They'll be walking around the house making cartoon kangaroo-like "boing" sound for at least a week! Sometimes, even longer.

Why Do Great Danes Have Such Huge Paws?

Great Danes are famous for being huge, and one of everybody's favorite features of the breed is their paws! They're massive, and even when they outgrow their puppy phase, their paws stay a little floppy.

Great Danes need to have big paws to support their bodyweight. Though they look lean, these dogs can easily weigh 150 pounds or better. If they had smaller paws, they wouldn't be able to keep themselves up. However, these paws also often lead to:

  • Stumbling.
  • Tripping.
  • Very loud walking/stomping.

For the most part, Great Danes prefer to walk at a slower pace. It helps them make sure they're not going to trip and tumble... Though tripping and tumbling is all part of puppyhood. I bet Whelen is great at it!
