Typically, these public water bowls are attached to the human fountains, making them easy to access at any time, especially if you've forgotten your pup's own bottle. 

Although more convenient, these public water bowls aren't usually where you want your dog to be drinking out of. As Dr. Jennifer Bruns, DVM, MPVM, a veterinarian at PetSmart Veterinary Services, explains, these public water bowls are hardly cleaned and are shared by many pets.

What to Look For in a Portable Dog Water Bottle

Finding the right portable dog water bottle is about seeking one that makes it easy to hydrate your pup without much hassle. Molly Jesperson, a training specialist for Camp Bow Wow, recommends looking for options that are leakproof and won't spill during transport. 

Jesperson also recommends looking for options with a flip cup or attached piece that doesn't require multiple items to hydrate your pup properly. For pet parents with larger dogs, you also want to keep in mind the amount of water your bottle can hold. If you have a larger dog or are headed on a longer walk, you should look for bottles that carry between 20 and 40 ounces. Smaller dogs typically need around 12 to 18 ounces.

How Much Water Does Your Dog Actually Need on a Summer Walk?

Keeping your dog properly hydrated isn't just about a few sips here and there on a summer walk; it's about ensuring they get the right amount. As Jesperson points out, no set number of ounces fits all dogs. Typically, the guidelines state that your dogs need at least one ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. 

However, Jesperson adds that this baseline number will need to be adjusted to account for heat, humidity, activity level, age and overall health. Especially during summer walks, dogs tend to lose fluid through panting and physical exertion, which means they may need more than an average day to keep them hydrated. In general, larger dogs will require more water to stay hydrated than smaller pups. 

The Correct Way to Pace Your Dog's Water Breaks on Hot Days

For any pet parent who sees their furry friend panting for water, it's easy to want to push large quantities on them to ensure they're getting all of the hydration they need. However, this isn't the best way to hydrate them on hot days. Dr. Bruns points out that pet parents should avoid having dogs drink their water at a fast pace, as this can cause bloat. 

Instead, Jesperson recommends offering dogs water throughout their exercise, rather than waiting until they look tired or overheated. Hydrating dogs early on their walks or exercise can help avoid dehydration later on. As heat, humidity, or length of walk increases, it's important to offer water repeatedly. Jesperson adds that during peak summer temperatures, humans should offer their pups every ten to fifteen minutes. If you're planning your summer walk ahead of time, plan your route around shaded areas, giving dogs a better chance to catch their breath. 

Going on long walks with your furry friends is just another perk of the summer season. However, when not handled properly, these fun outdoor adventures can quickly turn dangerous. Aliyah definitely has a dog! A grey Labrador Retriever? Not at all. A grown man in a dog suit? Honestly, maybe. He's a Cane Corso, and in addition to not being a grey Lab, he was a total accident.

Differences Between a Labrador Retriever and a Cane Corso

If you watched the video and saw him, thinking, "Wow, he really does look just like a grey Lab," take a deep breath. He may have looked similar to one at first, but he doesn't anymore; a Cane Corso is an entirely different dog that's much harder to handle.

Niall Harbison has seen all types of illnesses and injuries in street dogs through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. From malnutrition and skin damage to broken bones and wounds from violent acts, Harbison has encountered dogs in various stages of critical condition in need of lifesaving intervention.

Pippa is a street dog with a sweet demeanor and strong streak of curiosity. The precious pooch recently unknowingly tried to make friends with a buffalo and almost died from the interaction.

The Instagram video from @niall.harbison told Pippa's story and how she was severely injured. Harbison has known Pippa for years since she is on his daily feeding route and raved about her loving nature.

"She is well looked after by a local man but she does like to wander off and often gets a little lost," the caption explained. "Sadly, a couple of days ago, she had a big run in with a buffalo in a field and she ended up getting skewered by it. This is the gentlest and most soft dog in the world. She wouldn’t hurt a fly. I’m guessing the buffalo was protecting her young."

Harbison rushed Pippa to the Happy Doggo medical clinic for immediate care and was able to get her stabilized.

"While the wounds are bad it’s actually the raging infection she has that is the bigger problem," the story continued. "The team have it all under control and her X-rays are clear, although she is black and blue all over and in complete agony."

Positive Update on Pippa

In a recent follow-up post, Harbison shared some good news on Pippa's condition and praised her fighting spirit.

"If you’ve been following her story, you know she had a scary run-in with a buffalo a few weeks back," the caption reiterated. "She ended up with severe wounds and a nasty infection, but she is such a little fighter. Thanks to our amazing vet team and lots of TLC, she’s doing so much better."

Though she still has more recovery time ahead, Pippa is surrounded by love and the best care to help her return to good health.

"She’s not completely healed just yet, but she’s out of pain and getting stronger every day," the caption noted, adding, "You've got this, Pippa."

Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina, and a retirement village for senior dogs.

Why Do Black Bengal Cats Look Like Tiny Leopards?

So how is it that these tiny little kittens resemble one of the most beautiful, strongest and wildest large cats?

According to FurPawJoy.com, the strikingly similar resemblance is very much on purpose.

Bengal cats get those beautiful stripe markings by crossbreeding domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat, resulting in that coveted leopard aesthetic, but with a domestic cat's temperament.

That's why this black Bengal kitten is considered very rare.

Their coloring is due to a recessive genetic mutation called melanism.

Both cat parents need to have this gene in order for their kitten to have that beautiful black coloring.

Other factors that impact the Bengal cat's coloring and markings include additional genes, including the Taqpep and Mc1r, which affect the depth of the coloring and the rosettes, which are rose-like, multi-colored markings on the cat's fur.

Some dogs watch television. A Doodle named Knox watches his dad.

The handsome pup has spent years watching his father, an NBC reporter in Denver, appear on the news, so when it came time for Dad to cover a pet story, it only seemed fitting that Knox would join him on set for his own television debut.

Dressed in the cutest little necktie and displaying the manners of an absolute gentleman, Knox calmly sat beside his dad during the live segment. After the broadcast aired, he happily watched himself on television alongside his favorite person, making the sweet moment even more unforgettable.

Although Knox had one brief heart-stopping moment when he nearly slipped from the anchor chair, his mom noted that he handled it like a seasoned professional. Judging by the way he watched the replay afterward, it's safe to say he was pretty proud of his first television appearance.

According to veterinarian-reviewed information from PetMD, dogs are often drawn to movement, animal sounds, and familiar voices on TV. Knox joined his dad while he reported on a proposed Colorado bill that would have changed how pets are classified in certain legal matters by recognizing them as family rather than property. Although the legislation ultimately did not pass, the segment served as a memorable backdrop for Knox's first appearance on camera.

Whether he understood the assignment or was simply happy to spend the day with his favorite human, one thing is certain: Knox looked right at home in front of the camera. If his proud reaction to watching the replay is any indication, this won't be the last time viewers see the well-dressed Doodle sharing the spotlight with Dad.

Why Dogs Overheat Faster Than We Do

Dogs overheat much faster than we do because they aren't equipped with the same cooling system as us. As Dr. Jennifer Bruns, DVM, MPVM, a veterinarian at PetSmart Veterinary Services, explains, dogs only sweat through their paw pads and rely solely on panting to cool down, which is less efficient than sweating.

In general, dogs have naturally warmer bodies, around 101 to 102.5 degrees, meaning they're already much hotter than humans. This makes it even more important for pet parents to keep dogs cool through other tools and resources, especially in extreme weather.

How to Modify Your Daily Routine for Hot Weather Safety

Just because the weather is warmer doesn't mean you have to avoid all of your dog's favorite activities. All it takes are a few modifications to keep your pup's daily routine safe in the summer.

Yana Sinkevich, founder of the Hearty Paw, recommends keeping walks to early morning or late at night to avoid the higher temperatures and strong sunlight. If you're looking for summer activities, swimming and other water play can help keep dogs cool while providing exercise and mental enrichment. You should stay alert around any body of water and watch for signs of overheating or overexertion.

Whenever you take your dog outside for a walk, be sure to double-check the temperature of the sidewalk or concrete to ensure it's safe for your pup's paws.

Expert Cooling Hacks for Indoors and the Backyard

Summer is a great time to add cooling options inside and outside the home. Ali Smith, qualified dog trainer and behavior consultant for Maven, suggests investing in a dog-safe paddling pool for small and medium-sized breeds to cool off in whenever they please. For larger dogs, a stock tank can be durable and spacious enough for them to lie in comfortably.

Smith also recommends providing dogs with a shaded area outside where they can easily get in and out, and keeping their water supply clean and refreshed. Inside, invest in fans that improve airflow and keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day. All of these cooling hacks can help your pup enjoy the summer without overheating.

Why You Should Never Shave a Double-Coated Dog for Summer

When you see a double-coated dog like German shepherds, golden retrievers, or huskies, it's normal to want to reduce their fur in an attempt to relieve them from the heat. However, experts explain how this can cause more harm than good.

Sinkevich explains how the undercoat of these breeds helps cool them down, while the overcoat can reflect UV rays and protect them from the sun. Shaving your dog's double coat can increase their risk of overheating, sunburn, and cancer. In some cases, this can even permanently damage your dog's hair follicles, causing their fur to grow back differently.

If you're unsure, ask your dog's vet and groomer to help ensure you are doing the best for your dog and not putting them at further risk.

Dr. Bruns recommends offering dogs multiple water stations throughout your home so they always have access to fresh water. Add ice cubes to the water to help it stay cool longer. If possible, invest in a water fountain, as dogs tend to prefer moving water. Wet foods like canned dog food or adding water to dry kibble can also help keep pups hydrated throughout their regular meals.

Frozen treats or doggy ice cream are other options that can help keep dogs cool while still offering a delicious option they'll enjoy.

If you're unsure whether your dog is properly hydrated, check their gums — they should be moist and pink.

These breeds have flat faces that make them prone to breathing issues, limiting their ability to pant and cool down.

Similarly, Sinkevich explains that senior dogs struggle to cool down because their panting is less effective and their circulation doesn't move heat away from vital organs as well.

What Is a Sealyham Terrier?

Sealyham Terriers are rare, small Welsh breeds that were originally bred to be pest control, hunting smaller pest animals and vermin like badgers. Similar to Westies, Corgis, and Fox Terriers, Sealyhams — or Sealys — are short white dogs with wiry coats. The dogs are adaptable, friendly, and very good companions.

A dog with an underbite (also called a Class 3 malocclusion) won't necessarily have health issues, which happens with the lower jaw protrudes out past the lower jaw and the teeth don't fit properly. Some breeds, like Pugs or Bulldogs, may have a harder time due to their genetic makeup. But the ultimate question is whether you dog is comfortable.

“The lower canines should be sitting on the outside of the gum line and in front of the upper canines,” Dr. Nadine Fiani, assistant clinical professor of dentistry and oral surgery at CUCVM, tells PetMD.

If there's tissue or tooth contact that shouldn't be there, it could cause tooth or tissue trauma and should be consulted by a vet.

“The bottom line is, if you have abnormal tooth-to-tooth contact or if you have abnormal tooth-to-soft tissue contact, then something has to be done about it," Dr. Fiani concludes.

Both of my dogs always give me a warm welcome when I walk in the door. Whether I'm gone for 10 minutes or 10 hours, my Dachshund and my Pug mix greet me with tail wags, happy jumps, and excited whines to show how happy they are to see me.

In the TikTok from @madisonmorini, Summer's mom shared that she hadn't seen her canine cutie since leaving for a trip a week earlier. She knew her pup would get emotional at their reunion.

Why Do Dogs Get So Attached to Their Toys?

So the question is, why do dogs get so attached to certain toys?

It isn't just because the toy is super cute or chic and funny like these P.L.A.Y Pet Lifestyle ones that always make me laugh (I am especially fond of the martini as well as the Woofbuster Video toy).

Some toys can serve as real sources of comfort and security, especially for stressed or anxious dogs.

Signs they are very attached to a toy include carrying it everywhere, sleeping with the toy (like Cocopuffs does with this toy), not letting anyone else have access to the toy, and showing signs of separation anxiety from the toy.

Now when a dog becomes suddenly attached to a toy, it can be due to stress, but it also can just be due to boredom or dog instincts in that they naturally protect things, according to natureofpets.com.

You should really only be concerned if they have a violent reaction to someone taking the toy like growling or even snapping, if they excessively lick the toy, choose the toy over food or seem panicked when they can't access the toy.

If you are concerned the dog is too attached to a toy, try making sure they feel safe and secure in other ways and also consider rotating the toy with others.

Also, try to play more with your dog. They may just be understimulated!

When it comes down to understanding the science of separation anxiety, you need to realize that it's not your dog misbehaving; it literally comes down to them feeling terrified.

"A dog with separation anxiety is in a state of fear and panic," Kohanski says. "The dog isn’t a bad dog. He is just having a really hard time with being alone. To help your dog feel better, we have to create absences that are safe."

Why Emotional Goodbyes Are Doomed to Fail

While it's completely understandable that you might want to give and show your dog all the love before leaving, this behavior isn't actually going to help them if they're struggling with separation anxiety. In fact, an emotional goodbye might actually backfire because your dog will begin to associate that scenario with you leaving, which may make them more worked up before you even step foot out the door.

"We recommend keeping it simple. An overly emotional goodbye can be a loaded pre-departure cue. We want these departure cues to be meaningless, so it’s better to keep it low-key," Kohanski advises.

What Is the No. 1 Rule to Remember When Curing Your Dog's Separation Anxiety?

The most important rule to keep in mind when it comes to curing your dog's separation anxiety is to stay beneath their unique threshold for being alone and to work with it, not against it. "It’s important to remember that the definition of safe comes from your dog, not from us," Kohanski says.

Keeping this in mind, it's important not to push your pup's separation threshold too quickly. "We also don’t move forward and extend our absence times quickly. Good separation anxiety training takes these moves forward at our dog’s pace, in very small increments," Kohanski says. "As a certified separation anxiety trainer, I recommend incorporating some really easy practice as well. If your dog’s threshold is 4 minutes, you will practice absences at 3.5 minutes and below. Do some practice at 1 minute, 2 minutes, 30 seconds, etc."

Why the Behavior Might Get Worse Before It Gets Better

If your dog's behavior gets worse before it gets better when you start implementing this training strategy, this is a sign that you may need a professional to help treat your dog's separation anxiety.

"If it gets worse before it gets better, then you need some help from a certified separation anxiety trainer," Kohanski says. "It should not be worse because once you start your practice, you won’t leave your dog alone for longer than they can handle."

What to Do If Your Dog Starts Whining or Pacing

If your dog starts pacing or whining while you're away, don't panic. Instead, use it as information you can use to better equip your dog to handle your absences moving forward—and this might mean adjusting the threshold.

"Use this as data," Kohanski says. "If the dog is crying or whining, they are either approaching threshold or over it. Make note of the amount of time that elapsed before the whining started. It could be that your dog was having a bad day, or it could mean you need to adjust your threshold."

• Be patient. "Remember that your dog is having a hard time, not being a bad dog," Kohanski explains. "Kind approaches will get you to your goal. Practicing under threshold and not exposing your dog to panic-level departure times is key."

Remember, this is a process, and you won't experience a total change in behavior overnight. Work with your dog and their threshold for being alone, and little by little, you can help them with their separation anxiety and help them feel more at ease when they're at home.

How to Safely Trim a Cat's Nails Without a Wrestling Match

According to Petcademy, most cats don't fight nail trims because they're being difficult. It usually comes down to just two things: they don't like being restrained, and their paws are packed with nerve receptors that make them very sensitive to touch. Add in fear of the clippers themselves, and it's easy to see why a trim can turn into exactly what happened here.

The good news is there's a slower, calmer way to get it done. Petcademy recommends starting small: let your cat sniff the clippers and reward them for it, with a treat, petting or a little praise, before you ever touch a nail. Once they're not as anxious around the clippers, move on to gently holding and massaging their paw, rewarding them right away each time. Only once they're comfortable with that should you even think about trying an actual trim, cutting just the white part of the nail and staying far away from the pink "quick," which holds blood vessels and nerves.

Petcademy also suggests keeping it to one or two nails per sitting instead of trying to power through the whole paw at once, with a big reward after each one. If your cat pulls away or resists, don't ever force it. Just try again later.

Watch for signs your cat's genuinely overstressed rather than just mildly annoyed: pulling away hard, growling, or trying to bite you over and over. Those are good cues to pause the whole session instead of pushing through.

And if none of that works? The advice is simple: let a vet or professional groomer take over. Some cats just do better with someone who isn't their actual parent holding the clippers.

The groomer's verdict stands. This was skilled handling, headlock and all. Aslan's technique skipped a few steps, but it got the job done in three minutes flat. He's just not currently speaking to her about it.
