Dachshund Puppy Facts Photo by Tiaan Human on UnsplashPhoto by Tiaan Human on Unsplash
Dachshunds, both puppies and adults, are famous for their strong, bold personalities. They are playful, curious, and fiercely independent. Dachshunds are known for their stubbornness, and it can make them difficult to train, which is worth considering, especially as it pertains to a puppy.
Because of their unique builds, owners have to be very considerate of their Dachshund puppy's backs. Back injuries like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) pose a risk to these pups, so making sure they are not jumping off of furniture or being too risky on stairs is very important.
Socialization and potty training are two areas that some people have a tougher time with when it comes to Dachshunds. Patience and working with professionals can help make these two aspects easier and more manageable.
At the end of the day, puppy ownership is a big responsibility and not to be taken lightly. With research and due diligence, you and your own little chocolate bar will have a great long life together.

Dachshund's Kissing Streak Lasts Much Longer Than Anyone Expected
Most dog parents love to give kisses to their dogs, and in return, many pups love to give kisses back to their humans (well, they are more like licks, but tomato, tomahto).
But one dog mom was put to the test when she wanted to see how many Dachshund kisses in a row she would get from her sweet little dog.
The results were absolutely heartwarming, and viewers can't get enough of them!
@abbybaffoeThe way she progressively picks up speed 😭😭😂😂
♬ original sound - sanook.com - sanook.comLady, the Dachshund, kissed her mom for a record 60 seconds!
Quite impressive, and she even picked up speed toward the end.
We also love the documentary-style music that is now trending on TikTok.
As you can imagine, the comments section was quite emphatic about this Dachshund's kiss marathon.
"My Doxie and I make out like every morning; he’s obsessed with kisses," wrote one person.
Another commented, "The limit does not exist!"
"She doesn’t want to miss one spot!!! She LOVES you!!!!" someone else wrote.

Why Do Dogs Love Giving Kisses? As we can see in this viral and heartwarming video, this very affectionate Dachshund loves giving her mom kisses.
So the question is, why do dogs love giving kisses so much? Lady, the Dachshund, isn't the only pup who loves to show affection toward her human through kisses.
Just like humans, dogs each express their love for their humans in different ways, according to Freshpet.
Some dogs love to cuddle up on the couch with Mom or Dad, some bring all their toys to you, and others even get so excited when they see you that they may even pee on you a little!
And some pups prefer to express their love for their parents by licking them! It makes them feel closer to you, for sure.
Usually, pup parents are happy to receive a few kisses from their pet; then the dog associates that action with positive reinforcement, and they will continue to display that behavior.
And clearly, Lady has perfected this behavior!

The Harmless-Looking Summer Weed That Could Cost You Thousands in Vet Bills
Foxtails are a common summertime weed that resemble, you guessed it, a fox's tail. These weeds have spiked seeds at their ends, and these seeds have the potential to be incredibly harmful to our furry dog friends. In fact, a foxtail injury may even lead to thousands of dollars in vet bills if it is not addressed right away. From potential pain medication to emergency surgery, foxtails may cause some serious health damage, and injuries may even be life-threatening in some cases.
To find out more about why foxtails are so dangerous for dogs and how to prevent them from hurting your pup, we spoke with Dr. Karen “Doc” Halligan, a practicing veterinarian/surgeon with more than 35 years of experience, to get her expert input on the subject. From understanding exactly how foxtails are a threat to the most vulnerable places on your pet's body for a foxtail to do damage, read on for all the information you need to keep your fur baby safe for the remainder of summer.
Here is why foxtails injuries may lead to some serious veterinarian bills, and how to help prevent an injury from happening in the first place, according to a vet.
What Are Foxtails (and Why Are They So Dangerous to Pets)?UniversalImagesGroup / Getty Images
"Foxtails are the sharp, barbed seed heads of certain wild grasses that become dry and brittle during the summer months and are a common weed in California and the West," Dr. Halligan says. "Each seed has tiny, backward-facing barbs that act like fishhooks. Instead of falling out, they only move forward, allowing them to burrow deeper into your pet's skin, ears, nose, eyes, paws and even lungs. They cause problems by embedding in tissue, carrying bacteria with them. This leads to painful abscesses, chronic infections, and, in the worst cases, can reach the lungs, chest cavity, or other vital structures and become life-threatening."
Why a Foxtail Injury May Cost Thousands at the VetMoMo Productions / Getty Images
Despite their seeds' small size, foxtails can lead to costly vet bills for a number of reasons. "The seed itself is tiny, but finding it can be incredibly difficult," Dr. Halligan explains. "Simple surface foxtails between the toes can sometimes be removed under light sedation for a few hundred dollars, but many cases are much more complicated."
Depending on where the foxtail becomes lodged in your pup's body determines how costly care may be. "Many foxtails require sedation or general anesthesia because they're painful and often lodged deep inside the body," Dr. Halligan says. "Depending on where the foxtail is located, pets may need X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, endoscopy, surgery, antibiotics, pain medication and multiple follow-up visits to locate the foxtail."
If the foxtail has the opportunity to go deeper into your pet's body, this may add up even more. "Once the foxtail migrates deeper or causes an abscess, treatment can quickly climb into the $1,000-$3,000 range. Foxtails inhaled into the lungs or chest cavity may require advanced imaging and surgery that can exceed $5,000-$10,000," Dr. Halligan warns.
The 5 Most Vulnerable Foxtail Entry Points on Your Pet's BodyEkaterina Goncharova / Getty Images
1. NoseFirst, the nose. "Dogs often sniff the ground where foxtails grow. A foxtail lodged in the nose causes sudden, violent sneezing, pawing at the face, nasal discharge or even nosebleeds," Dr. Halligan says.
2. EarsNext up: the ears. "Foxtails commonly work their way deep into the ear canal, causing head shaking, scratching, crying, holding the head to one side or sudden pain," Dr. Halligan warns.
3. EyesThe eyes are another vulnerable entry point for foxtails. "A foxtail trapped under the eyelid can cause squinting, excessive tearing, redness, swelling and corneal ulcers if not removed quickly," Dr. Halligan says.
4. Paws (especially between the toes)Pay special attention to your pup's toes, as this is one of the most common places foxtails can get lodged. "Owners may notice limping, excessive licking, swelling, redness or a draining tract between the toes," Dr. Halligan explains.
5. Skin and CoatFinally, foxtails can actually get into your dog's skin and coat. "Foxtails can penetrate almost anywhere on the body, especially in the armpits, groin, chest and areas with thinner skin. They often create painful swellings or abscesses that continue to worsen until the seed is removed," Dr. Halligan says.
Bug Bite vs. Foxtail: How to Know the Differencegdmoonkiller / Getty Images
While bug bites and a foxtail injury may look similar, there are some distinct differences between the two. "A bug bite is usually a localized allergic reaction that is red, raised, itchy or painful and often improves within 24 to 48 hours. Bug bites usually don’t create a migrating tract or deep abscess the way a foxtail does," Dr. Halligan says. "A foxtail injury tends to get progressively worse because the seed continues migrating deeper into the tissue. Warning signs include persistent licking or chewing at one spot, limping, repeated sneezing, sudden head shaking, a draining wound or swelling that doesn't improve—or gets worse."
Another clue that can help you distinguish between a bug bite and a foxtail is timing. "One of the biggest clues is timing. If your dog was hiking, running through dry grass, or playing in fields and suddenly develops these symptoms afterward, I would be highly suspicious of a foxtail," Dr. Halligan says. "If symptoms persist beyond a day or your pet seems [in pain], don't wait. The sooner a foxtail is removed, the simpler—and less expensive—the treatment usually is."
The 10-Minute Post-Walk Routine That Saves Lives (and Money)Simply taking 10 minutes to check all over your pet's body, particularly the most vulnerable entry points, to remove any foxtails that got caught on your pup's fur may not only save your dog's life, but it may also save you a trip to the emergency vet. "The good news is that most of these expensive emergencies are preventable with careful inspection after every outdoor adventure," Dr. Halligan says.

How to Protect Your Pet From Foxtails This SummerEkaterina savyolova / Getty Images
First and foremost, it's all about prevention. "Prevention is always easier—and far less expensive—than treatment," Dr. Halligan says. "One of my favorite sayings is, 'The cheapest veterinary bill is the emergency you never have.' Catching a foxtail early can save your pet from pain and save owners thousands of dollars in advanced treatment."
Dr. Halligan recommends the following to help prevent foxtail injuries:
- Don't walk pets through dry grassy fields where you know foxtails are common.
- Keep up with your yard work, and remove foxtails before they dry and release seeds.
- Check your dog thoroughly after every hike or walk, paying especially close attention to their paws, between their toes, ears, eyes, nose, armpits and groin.
- Brush your dog regularly, especially if they're a long-haired breed, because foxtails often become hidden in thick coats.
- Trim the long hair between your pup's paw pads during foxtail season.
- Pay close attention to any unusual symptoms. "Never ignore persistent sneezing, limping, excessive licking or head shaking after outdoor activities. These are classic warning signs that deserve a veterinary examination," Dr. Halligan notes.
- Dr. Karen “Doc” Halligan, DVM, is a practicing veterinarian/surgeon with more than 35 years of experience. She is also an award-winning author, a television medical correspondent, and the host of the Doc Halligan’s Collars and Cents podcast.

White Cat 'Voices Her Complaints' to Mom When the 'Spare Human' Slacks on the Job
Cats are funny creatures. They are not afraid to make their opinions known through their actions and their meows. When one kitty had some feedback for her people, and she was not afraid to make her voice heard!
A white cat named Hebe had a special report to give her mom. When she felt that she didn't receive enough attention while her mom was out of town, she wouldn’t let herself be silenced before she could make her opinions known.
@hazelx.cFormal complaint filed. #talkingcat #seniorcat #catsoftiktok #nurselife #fyp
♬ original sound - Hazel and HebeWow, Hebe had so much to say, and for good reason! She meowed and meowed throughout the video to tell her mom that she isn't receiving the 5-star treatment she deserves. She even got louder when the “spare human” tried to shush her. That’s one smart cat!
People in the comments were immediately taking Hebe’s side. One person said, “She'd have less complaints if that man listened to her the first time.” Another viewer commented, “She couldn't wait to tell you all the tea.”
What Your Cat’s ‘Complaining’ Meows Really MeanIf you’ve spent any time around cats, you know that there are a variety of sounds they make in their day-to-day lives. Meowing is a form of communication for cats that is used almost exclusively toward humans. As their people, we want to know exactly what our cats are talking about when they’re vocalizing.
Cats first start meowing shortly after they're born to communicate with their mothers. However, domestic cats view themselves as our kids, and the endearing meows continue into adulthood. A meowing cat likely wants something, whether that’s food, attention, or something else. Sometimes, it can just be a simple greeting to welcome their human home.
A high-pitched meow can mean something else entirely. This is a sound cats make when surprised, in pain, or in distress of some kind. When you hear a high-pitched meow from your feline friend, it’s a good idea to check on them for any discomfort. At the end of the day though, cats are smart. They know that their different meows elicit a response from their human, so it may merely be done to get your attention.
In addition to their meows, cats also make chirping, purring, and chattering noises. Chirps are often another way for cats to get attention when they want their human to pay attention to something important. Purring, a sign of contentment, is another common sound cats make. This is often done when receiving pets or other positive attention. Lastly, chattering is often done when your cat is looking out the window because it is an indicator if your kitty’s prey drive. Likely, your cat spotted a bird or a squirrel outdoors and wants to chase it down.
Hebe was sure to communicate her important message to her mom through a series of meows. We think she got her point across quite well!

How to Bring a Kitten HomeBringing a new pet home is super exciting! But it can also be overwhelming—for you and for them. Preparation ahead of time is key and being ready to practice patience and let things happen naturally is best for and it's best for your kitty, too.
The most important thing you can do to prepare your home for a new kitten is to first set up a secluded, secure, and quiet place for them to acclimate to their new home. Kittens should be in this space away from other pets for at least a few days or even up to a couple of weeks. They should have access to everything they need in this space, including their food, water, and litter box.
It's important to take your time socializing and bonding with your cat and let them come to you on their own terms. Trying to force it is never a good idea and can actually harm your potential relationship for the future.
Last but not least, always make sure to kitten-proof your whole home and cut off access to places where that isn't possible. Safety is always of the utmost importance.
When in doubt, talk to your vet! Professionals are your best resource when making your home ready and safe for your new best friend and hopefully, bathroom attendant.

The One Thing Every Mixed-Breed Pet Parent Should Do Before July 31
Walk into any animal shelter in the country, and you will see them. A dog with oversized ears that never quite grew into its head. Another with the legs of a corgi, face of a Labrador, and fluffy tail that gives no clue as to where it came from. No DNA test can fully explain them, and that makes mixed-breed dogs special.
This Friday, July 31, is National Mutt Day, a twice-a-year celebration, which also falls on December 2. Colleen Paige, an animal welfare advocate, started the tradition in 2005 after recognizing that mixed-breed dogs are more common in shelters than purebred dogs and are less likely to be adopted.

If you share a home with a mixed-breed dog, you have a reason to celebrate. If you've been mulling over the idea of adopting a dog, check out your local animal shelters for an adorable mutt.
Celebrate the Dog You Have, Not the Breed You Don'tThe wagging tail waiting at the door does not care about pedigree history, championship bloodlines or rare breeds.
That is what makes National Mutt Day feel different than other pet holidays. We celebrate the dogs whose family tree cannot be traced, yet whose personalities are completely unforgettable.
Get Ready for the Big DayYou still have time to prepare something for Friday. National Mutt Day gives you a perfect opportunity for storytelling.
Mutts often come with unknown history. This is your chance to tell their story and raise awareness. Think about how you met, including some funny incidents, or the ways your dog was trying to communicate with you. Organize your dog's photos in an album or a slideshow.
With a few days left before, check local community groups on social media for playdates organized by regional rescue groups. Pet parents gather at parks or dog-friendly places to celebrate their unique dogs.
And then on Friday, do not forget to post using the hashtag #NationalMuttDay.

How to Celebrate National Mutt DayYou do not need expensive gifts or special plans to celebrate. Here are a few ideas for making the day memorable.
- Take your dog somewhere they haven't been. Mutts are curious by nature, and an unfamiliar trail will offer plenty of mental stimulation.
- Turn the day into an afternoon challenge, trying to teach your dog some new silly tricks for fun. Or turn it into an adventure, hiding treats around the house for a scent game. If you cannot think of anything else, freeze a stuffed food toy.
The goal is not to create a perfect Instagram moment. It is about spending time doing something your dog loves.
Statistics compiled by the Zebra show that nearly half of pet parents in the United States own a mixed-breed dog, making mutts the most common dog in the country. Yet many dogs waiting in shelters are mixed-breed.
A Celebration That Goes Beyond One DayNational Mutt Day isn't meant to pit mixed-breed against purebred dogs. The truth is every dog deserves love, attention and a safe place to call his forever home. Instead, it's meant to bring awareness of the needs of mixed-breed dogs waiting in shelters.
Dogs don't care about the labels we put on them. They care about having a favorite spot on the sofa and the chance to cuddle with their favorite person in the world.
California's Most Jaw-Dropping Beach Event Is Back—and Every Surfer Has Four Paws
Most dogs spend their beach day digging holes, chasing tennis balls, or enjoying their zoomies on the sand. Now imagine a dog hopping onto a surfboard, riding a wave, and looking like a professional? You do not have to imagine it; you can see it this Saturday in California.
The World Dog Surfing Championship returns on August 1 to California for its 10th annual showing. The event takes place on the Northern California coast near Pacifica.

Dog surfers have already enrolled. You can attend as a guest and be part of a huge charity event.
The Official Schedule View this post on InstagramDogs compete by size and surfing style. The event starts with small dogs, followed by medium and large dogs.
Then, after a short break, the competition continues with tandems, including dog-dog and human-dog tandems. By midday, the winners will get their awards.
Judges score each on four criteria: length of ride, technique, confidence on the board and the size or strength of the wave being ridden.
Of course, safety is important. Every dog has to wear a life vest, and their parent swims alongside to help position the dog on the board and push them into a wave.

Can Any Dog Learn to Surf?Daniel Knighton / Getty Images
The short answer is yes, but not all dogs are naturals. Breeds like retrievers and Portuguese water dogs, confident swimmers with a playful personality, will adapt faster than a Chihuahua.
Small dogs have excellent balance, but the biggest requirement is not athletic ability. It is enthusiasm. A dog who loves trying new things will pick up things quicker than a nervous one around water.
More Than a Surfing CompetitionRegistration for this year's World Dog Surfing Championship has already concluded. Luckily, attendence is free, as long as you reserve your spot.
The event makes for the perfect beach day with your furry pal, especially if they enjoy splashing in water. You can also explore partner booths, meet fellow dog lovers, and enjoy on-site activations.
The World Dog Surfing Championship benefits Rocket Dog Rescue and the Peninsula Humane Society. Dogs looking for homes will also be available for adoption at the event.
Worth Knowing Before You GoThe 2026 World Dog Surfing Championships take place August 1 from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. PT at Linda Mar Beach, off Highway One at Linda Mar Boulevard in Pacifica, about 14 miles south of San Francisco.
Check the event rules before arriving. The beach usually fills up fast, with the small dog heats kicking off at 9 am. The best viewing spots fill up quickly, so make sure to arrive early.

8-Month Old Puppy Surrendered to Shelter Repeatedly Gets Passed Over For Being Deaf
Puppies are usually adopted quickly when they arrive at shelters due to their irresistible adorability and charm. These canine cuties get noticed more quickly than larger, older dogs who may have health issues. Still, there are some little fur babies that get overlooked.
Julie is an 8-month-old puppy who's been at Cobb County Animal Services in Georgia for the past month. The pretty pup received several inquiries, though those never resulted in adoption due to Julie's physical challenge.
@sharing.lov3READ HER STORY… ⬇️ Julie is only 8 months old and she is deaf. She was surrendered to the shelter on June 28 when her family was preparing to welcome a new baby. They shared that she is housebroken, good with children, good with other dogs, and already knows several hand signals. Normally, puppies don’t stay in the shelter for very long. But Julie has been there for almost 1 month…🥺 Every time someone stops at her kennel, they smile… until they hear one word. Deaf. Then they keep walking. 😭 After spending time with Julie, my heart absolutely broke for her. She is incredibly sweet, so gentle when taking treats, eager to please, and unbelievably smart. She already knows hand signals for sit, down, and paw, and she’s ready to learn so much more. Being deaf does not make Julie a difficult dog. It simply means she communicates a little differently. Dogs don’t care how we communicate… they just want to understand us. Julie can learn just like any other dog with patience, consistency, and love. If you’re looking for a calmer dog who’s a little more chill, then a puppy probably isn’t the right fit for you… deaf or not. Please keep that in mind before adopting a puppy. They have lots of energy, they need guidance, they need patience, and they need someone who is willing to teach them how to navigate the world. Julie deserves someone who will see who she is, not just the word “deaf” on her kennel card. Please help her story reach the person who’s been looking for a puppy just like her. I truly believe her perfect match is out there… they just haven’t found her yet. ❤️ • • #puppy #deaf #signlanguage #dog #rescue
♬ original sound - sweet_peach🍑The TikTok from @sharing.lov3 told Julie's story, who was surrendered to the shelter in June because her family was expecting a new baby.
"Julie is only 8 months old and she is deaf," the caption explained as clips of the precious puppy showed her loving personality. "Normally, puppies don’t stay in the shelter for very long. But Julie has been there for almost 1 month."
The 8-month-old pup is sweet, playful, and over-the-top adorable, yet potential adopters often lose interest after they hear her whole story.
"Every time someone stops at her kennel, they smile… until they hear one word," the story continued. "'Deaf'. Then they keep walking."
Deaf Dogs Can Learn Hand SignalsReasons for deafness in dogs range from genetics to old age and illness. Still, canines are extremely resilient and quickly learn to compensate for any physical limitations. Many deaf dogs are easily trained to communicate through hand signals for basic commands and even more complex messages. Julie already knows various visual cues and is a quick learner.
"She is incredibly sweet, so gentle when taking treats, eager to please, and unbelievably smart," the caption noted. "She already knows hand signals for sit, down, and paw, and she’s ready to learn so much more."

Golden Retriever Takes On Ring Bearer Duty, Then His Zoomies Steal the Whole Wedding
Dog parents love to include their pups in as much as possible, whether that’s taking them to run some errands or going on a trip together. Usually, our pups are well behaved and know how to hold it together. Sometimes, however, it’s a different story.
When one couple was getting married, they knew that they wanted to include their dog, a Golden Retriever named Charlie. When it came time to perform his wedding duties, he decided to spice things up a bit.
@meganscott814The funniest part of our wedding 🤣 #goldenretriever #dogringbearer #zoomies #fyp
♬ original sound - LEON - LEONOh my goodness, he was truly a sight to behold. While he was supposed to be the ring bearer for his parents, Charlie’s walk down the isle turned into a full-blown case of the zoomies. He stole the show!
Viewers couldn’t believe the extent of this pup's zoomies. One person commented, “Oh, he turned on the jets.” Another viewer thought Charlie’s zoomies were a happy accident. They said, “This would be the highlight of my wedding day.”
Others in the comments believed he couldn’t contain his excitement about his parents getting married. One person said, “The responsibility was overwhelming, he got too happy about it all.”
Should You Include Your Dog in Your Wedding? In recent years, there has been an ever-growing trend of brides and grooms including their furry friends in their wedding. While you can’t guarantee your pet will be on their best behavior, there are plenty of ways this decision can go even better than expected.
Charlie was included as a ring bearer, meaning his job was to stroll down the isle and present the wedding bands to his parents. Other dog parents may have their dog act as a “flower girl” by dropping petals as they walk down the aisle. Some people even have their dogs act as a bridesmaid or a groomsman. All dog parents want to have their canine companion by their side on such an important day!
One person who watched the video believed dogs can contribute more than people expect at a wedding. They commented, “So they didn’t bark, didn’t jump on your beautiful dress AND didn’t poop? I’ve seen grooms behave worse. Job well done I’d say.”
Pet parents who decide to include their dogs may want to hire a handler for the day. This would be someone who has experience with dogs and can be responsible for taking care of their pup to avoid any accidents. The bride and the groom will be pre-occupied, and it’s important to have someone present who can meet your dogs’ needs, such as providing bathroom breaks and feeding them at their usual times.
Even if you decide to leave your furry friend at home for your wedding, there are other ways pet parents include their babies on their special day. A popular wedding idea is to have signature cocktails named after their pets with an adorable portrait of the pet on the drink menu. Some people may decide to have a photobooth at their wedding, and pet parents can bring life-size cutout photos of their pets for guests to take photos with. Others even have custom cake toppers made to include their beloved pet. There are endless ways to make your wedding feel like your pet is there in spirit!
While Charlie’s zoomies weren’t quite what his parents had in mind when they made him ring bearer, it certainly helped make the day one they won’t forget!
How to Manage Increased Summer Hairballs in Cats: Grooming Tips and Diet Fixes
If your cat has been hacking up more hairballs than usual lately, you're not imagining it. Summer tends to bring a noticeable uptick in hairball frequency for most cats, and it's not just bad luck or a coincidence tied to warmer weather. There's real biology behind it, and understanding what's happening can help you get ahead of the mess before it starts.
As temperatures climb, cats go through a seasonal shedding process, dropping their heavier winter coat in favor of something lighter and more manageable. That means a lot more loose fur floating around, and a lot more of it ending up in your cat's mouth during routine self-grooming. Every lick pulls in a few more strands, and over time, that fur builds up in the stomach faster than it can pass through.

It's not only outdoor or seasonally affected cats dealing with this either. Indoor cats aren't immune, since climate-controlled environments can throw off their natural shedding rhythms in ways that catch parents off guard. And some cats are more prone to hairballs than others, whether because of their coat length, their age, or their body condition.
The good news is that summer hairballs are highly manageable with the right grooming routine and a few smart dietary adjustments. Below, an expert breaks down why hairballs spike this time of year, plus practical grooming hacks and diet fixes that can make a real difference.
Why Do Cats Get More Hairballs During the Summer?cheong loksi / Getty Images
According to JoAnn Parente, dog and cat expert and co-founder of Dogs & Cats Rule, most cats shed significantly more in summer because they are losing their heavier, seasonal coat, which can result in them swallowing larger amounts of loose fur while grooming. That extra fur has to go somewhere, and for cats, that usually means it gets swallowed during their normal grooming sessions.
Interestingly, this isn't a problem limited to cats who spend time outdoors. Air conditioning and indoor lighting can also disrupt the natural shedding cycle of any cat, including an indoor cat, Parente explains, which means even cats who never leave a climate-controlled home can experience heavier shedding at unexpected times.
Some cats are also simply more predisposed to hairball trouble than others. Hairballs are most common in long-haired, older, or overweight cats, since they either groom more readily or have difficulty moving hair through their digestive tract properly, according to Parente. Knowing whether your cat falls into one of these higher-risk categories can help you decide how aggressive your grooming and dietary strategy needs to be this summer.

Summer Grooming Hacks to Stop Loose Fur at the SourceBrush More Often Than You Think You Need ToIt's tempting to stick to a once-a-week brushing schedule, but during peak shedding season, that's not nearly enough. Parente advises that daily grooming for a few minutes during the shedding season is much more productive than waiting for a weekly brushing. Even a short session each day can make a noticeable dent in how much loose fur ends up in your cat's mouth.
Match Your Tools to Your Cat's CoatSvetlana Repnitskaya / Getty Images
Not every brush works for every cat, and using the wrong one can leave plenty of fur behind. Parente recommends cat parents use an appropriate brush according to their cat's coat type, since a tool designed for a short-haired cat won't necessarily do the job for a long-haired or double-coated breed.
Follow Up With a Damp Cloth or Grooming GloveSvetlana Repnitskaya / Getty Images
Brushing alone often isn't the final step. Parente suggests finishing with a slightly damp grooming glove or microfiber cloth to lift the fine hairs that traditional brushes leave behind. This extra pass catches the loose, fine hairs standard brushes tend to miss, which helps prevent loose fur from landing on your cat beforehand and being ingested while self-grooming.
Diet Changes That Help Cats Safely Pass HairballsPrioritize Hydrationcoldsnowstorm / Getty Images
Grooming isn't the only piece of the puzzle. What's happening inside your cat's digestive tract matters just as much as the outside. Parente points out that hydration is very undervalued in the fight against hairballs because well-hydrated digestion moves ingested hair along the intestinal tract more effectively. Cats who don't drink much water on their own may benefit from wet food as a way to boost overall moisture intake.
Combine Wet Food With Balanced FiberImage Via: Impact Photography/Shutterstocjk
Rather than relying on a single fix, Parente recommends a combined approach: combining wet food high in moisture with a healthy, balanced diet (containing natural sources of fiber) can greatly reduce hairball formation. She's clear, though, that this doesn't mean experimenting with home remedies. Do not include any home remedies or oil unless directed by your vet, she cautions.
Look for Hairball-Control Formulas With Beet Pulp or PsylliumKseniya Ovchinnikova / Getty Images
For cats who need extra support, targeted nutrition can help. Parente advises pet parents to choose diets targeted for hairball control that contain ingredients like beet pulp and psyllium in moderation.
Keep Your Cat at a Healthy WeightSvetlana Sultanaeva / Getty Images
Weight management plays a bigger role in hairball prevention than many owners realize. If your cat has frequent hairballs, they can benefit from maintaining a healthy weight, as exercise and good digestive health help hair pass naturally rather than accumulate in the stomach, Parente notes.
Summer hairballs might feel like an unavoidable part of having a cat this time of year, but they don't have to be. With daily grooming, the right tools, and a few strategic diet adjustments, most cats can shed comfortably without the extra mess. Paying closer attention to hydration, fiber intake, and weight management now can make a real difference in how often your cat deals with hairballs, both this summer and beyond.

What Is an Undercoat Rake (and Does Your Dog Need One?)Galina Vetertsovskaya / Getty Images
An undercoat rake reaches the soft, fluffy hair underneath a dog’s outer coat and pulls out the fur that’s already loose. If your dog sheds in clumps or seems to explode with hair every spring and summer, this is probably the tool you need. Huskies, shepherds, goldens, Pomeranians and a lot of Labs are good examples of dogs that may need an undercoat rake.
On the other hand, dogs with short, fine coats, like boxers or greyhounds, usually don’t have much of an undercoat, so a rake isn’t a good fit for them, Dr. Elden says.

How to Brush Your Pet Without Causing "Brush Burn"Maria Korneeva / Getty Images
"Brush burn usually comes from pressing too hard or going over the same spot too many times," Dr. Elden says. "Go with the direction of the hair, and be extra gentle around the belly, armpits and bony areas. If the skin starts looking pink or your dog is flinching or trying to leave, stop."
Why Clipping Double Coats May Cause Other Issuesjose carlos cerdeno martinez / Getty Images
Clipping double coats doesn't make shedding worse, but it may cause a number of other issues. "It doesn’t necessarily make a dog shed more," Dr. Elden says. "You may just end up with the same shedding, only now the hairs are shorter. The bigger issue is how the coat grows back. The soft undercoat may come in before the longer guard hairs, which can leave the coat looking fuzzy, uneven and more likely to mat. It can take months to grow back, and sometimes it never looks quite the same. Shaving also removes some protection from the sun and heat. Unless there’s a medical reason or severe matting, getting the loose undercoat out is usually a much better move."
There you have it. Now you know how to manage your pet's summer shedding much easier with these tips and tools, giving you more time to enjoy the summer (and less time spending cleaning up dog hair).

Cockatiel Sings One of the Hardest Opera Songs Ever—and Totally Nails It
Birds are so cool. There are so many different types, and every single one of them feels even cooler than the last. Whether you've got a huge parrot who talks in nearly complete sentences or the littlest songbird, birds will brighten up your life in no time!
Recently, one Cockatiel showed off that you absolutely do not have to be a huge, talking bird to be talented and cool. This little bird is mastering opera one note at a time, and the song he's singing now will knock your socks off:
@jackiwandersSome birds chirp in the morning. Mine casually sings Queen of the Night while I make breakfast. Very low-key household. 😂 Follow to see what Aspen sings next. 👀🎶 #Cockatiel #BirdTok #SingingBird #Opera #FunnyAnimals

Jacki is a music teacher, which apparently doesn't only extend to humans. She comes home and teaches Aspen songs by whistling them, and Aspen learns to match the pattern. His favorite parts to sing are the highest notes, since they're more in his natural range.

Aspen loves opera so much that he will literally perform at any time. Not all of his performances are PG, though, even though his mom definitely raised him better than this:
@jackiwandersI wanted to keep this channel family-friendly, but then my bird started dancing to Eminem on a pole. 😒 #cockatiel #eminem #operabird #birdsofinstagram #funnybird
♬ original sound - R4He's the total package: adorable, talented, and funny! What more could you ask for in a pet? He's pretty clean, too, based on other videos of his cage and grooming routine. My dogs should really take some notes!
How to Teach Cockatiels SongsBirds will learn to "sing" all on their own, mostly based on instinct. Birds sing. However, without proper training, their songs are mostly just whatever tunes they pick up on their own, or even ones they make up.
If you want to teach a Cockatiel to sing a certain song, it's not as hard as you might think. All it takes is:
- Starting small: only a few notes, then build up.
- Repeating each section for several days before moving on.
- Making sure there's no conflicting noise.
- Praise and treats when they get it right.
Training just about any animal in the world will be a whole lot easier when you have treats on hand. Food is the key to all happiness, and apparently, a successful opera career!

Big Black Maine Coon Gives Birth to a Litter of Tiny Ninjas

Cats Will Help Raise KittensMotherhood, as a human, can feel pretty isolating sometimes. It takes a village, after all, and sometimes, people don't want to be villagers. When it comes to cats, though, they love to pitch in!

If you have kittens and more than one female cat, don't be surprised if she wants to jump in and lend a helping paw, especially if she's also recently had a litter! Cats will help another cat's kittens out by:
- Grooming them.
- Protecting them from intruders.
- If applicable, allowing them to nurse.
- Playing with them.

Senior Blind Street Dog 'Left For Dead' Now 'Lives Like Royalty' After Adoption, and We're Emotional
Niall Harbison works miracles through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. The animal advocate tends to street dogs with various medical, nutritional, and emotional needs. He often takes dogs who are literally on death's door and rehabilitates them to live their best life.
Rocky is a street dog who was abandoned due to his old age and blindness. Thanks to Harbison and his team, Rocky now has a new leash on life.
View this post on InstagramHarbison was contacted by a local resident in May to rescue Rocky, who had been deserted due to his poor health. When the precious pooch was brought to the Happy Doggo medical clinic, tests showed he was suffering from blood parasites, skin issues, pressure on his organs, and glaucoma that caused his blindness.
Rocky was in such critical condition, Harbison and his team weren't sure if he would survive. Yet with proper medical care and tons of love and affection, Rocky healed and even flourished.
"Rocky was dumped and left for dead just because he grew old and lost his sight," the caption explained. "When we brought him in, he was so weak, but with good food and lots of love, he fought his way back. He learned to trust our voices and navigate the world in darkness."
Where Is Rocky Now?Harbison was thrilled with Rocky's progress, but didn't expect many adoption inquiries due to his age and vision issues. Yet wonders never cease at Happy Doggo — Rocky ended up getting his forever family and is truly living his best life.
"Finding a home for an elderly, blind dog felt impossible, but an incredible family stepped up," the story continued as the post showed clips of Rocky in the ocean, playing in the sand, cuddling with his family member, and sleeping peacefully on a cozy couch. "Today, Rocky is safe and living like royalty with people who absolutely adore him."
The transformation from when Rocky first arrived at the sanctuary to him frolicking in his forever home is a testament to the lifesaving work Harbison and his team perform on a daily basis.

7 Vet-Recommended Flea and Tick Preventatives to Buy This Summer
Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
Summer's the season your dog practically lives outside, and so do fleas and ticks, which means this is exactly when prevention matters most. These tiny hitchhikers aren't just an itchy nuisance; they can carry serious diseases like Lyme, ehrlichiosis, and tapeworms, making prevention one of the most important things you can do for your pet's health this time of year.
The good news? You don't have to guess which product actually works. We rounded up seven flea and tick preventatives that vets consistently recommend, from monthly chewables to topical treatments to fast-acting shampoos and sprays. Whether you're looking for an all-in-one option that also covers heartworm and intestinal parasites, a long-lasting formula that only needs reapplying every 12 weeks, or an over-the-counter option for a sudden infestation, there's something here for every pet and their human.

Before starting any new flea or tick product, it's always a good idea to check in with your vet, especially if your pet has a history of sensitivities or is on other medications. But if you're ready to gear up for flea and tick season, here are seven trusted options worth adding to your pet's summer routine.
Our Panel of ExpertsRonit Berdugo, DVM, CVA, is an expert partner for SynergyLabs.
Ali Smith is a qualified dog trainer and behavior consultant from Maven Pet.
Why Year-Round Flea and Tick Prevention Is CriticalTo humans, fleas and ticks are a seasonal pest that only annoy us for part of the year. However, to our pets, it can be much more of a long-term problem. Ronit Berdugo, DVM, CVA, an expert Partner for SynergyLabs, explains, "Fleas are a common cause of itchy skin and flea allergy dermatitis. They can also transmit tapeworms and, in severe infestations, may even cause anemia. Ticks can spread serious illnesses, including Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever."
Although many will associate fleas and ticks with the summer season, fleas have been known to survive indoors during colder months and ticks have been reported in new regions for longer periods. Using constant tick and flea prevention is the only way you can ensure your dog's safety year-round.
The Big Debate: Oral Chews vs. Topical Spot-OnsCreative Images Lab / Getty Images
While many pet parents will want to pick the best option for their dogs, the choice between oral chews and topical creams depends on lifestyle and personal preferences.
According to Ali Smith, a dog trainer and behavior consultant with Maven Pet, oral preventatives tend to be more convenient. Instead of struggling to let your pet rub topical spot-ons on them or remembering to apply after swimming or bathtime, oral chews are a quicker option.
However, for pets that struggle to take medication, topical creams are equally effective but do rely on proper application, Smith says.
The only exception could be herding breeds with the MDR1 gene, who can be sensitive to isoxazolines, chemicals typically found in chewables.
Smith points out that, aside from the one exception, the best preventive method is the one given consistently and without delay.

While Smith and Berdugo stress the importance of researching the best brand along with your pet's veterinarian, these preventatives are widely popular among experts and come with science-backed data to prove their effectiveness.

Why Dog Preventatives Can Kill CatsKristina Pokaluk / Getty Images
Although it's normal to assume that all preventatives are safe for all pets, Berdugo points out that the formulations and dosages in these preventatives differ by species and must be used exactly as labeled to avoid any medical situation.
Berdugo explains how ingredients like pyrethrin, a naturally derived insecticide, and Permethrin, a synthetic insecticide, can be toxic to cats, as their bodies are not equipped to process them the same way as dogs.
Toxic ingredients in topical creams can also be toxic to cats and can pose a danger if they snuggle up to a canine friend that may have the product on them. If your cat has been exposed to any of the toxic ingredients found in flea or tick preventatives designed for dogs, symptoms may include muscle tremors, twitching, drooling, weakness, dilated pupils, and seizures. Berdugo stresses that any of these symptoms call for immediate veterinarian care as it is a medical emergency.

While shopping online has its perks, it also opens up pet parents to the possibility of buying counterfeit medications from unverified sellers. As Smith explains, this also isn't limited to online shopping. "It's not just online; it's in stores, too. Cheap brands in Sam's Club or Costco can be just as problematic," Smith explains.
Rather than taking the risk of buying unknown products or purchasing from unknown sellers, it's worth searching for the medication and looking at the company's history, including any lawsuits. While it's hard to track small cases, repeated red flags from a company can ultimately lead to lawsuits, which are easily found online.
Whether it's oral or topical flea or tick medication or NexGard Plus or Frontline Plus, year-round flea and tick prevention is key for a happy and healthy pet. While it's easy to put off or forget, adding preventative care to your pet's health routine is vital to help them prevent falling victim to these pests. If you're in doubt about which is right for you, speak with your pet's veterinarian to come up with the best game plan for you and your best friend.
