Golden Retriever Puppy Sees First Sunrise and Realizes How Big the World Is

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 5:20pm

There’s something profound about witnessing a baby experience the world for the first time, and, it turns out, so is watching a puppy do the same. In this heartwarming video, the sun slowly rises, and Bowie, the Golden Retriever puppy, sits in complete awe, taking in a moment that feels much bigger than it should.

Bowie sits peacefully on the sand, taking in the beautiful sunrise and occasionally looking back at his human as if to say, "Are you seeing this?" It's an emotional moment, and one that reminds us all to slow down and take life in. If a bouncy ball of energy like a puppy can pause to appreciate it, so can we.

"He’s understanding that he’s a part of all this too," says on viewer.

"Nothing more precious than this," asserts another.

"I’m crying and happy at the same time," adds a third.

In comment after comment, people are amazed at how aware Bowie is of the magic he's witnessing and how uncharacteristically "zen" his response is for a puppy. (The couple's other Golden is busy running around nearby.) Several viewers also urge the creator to frame this perfectly composed moment to cherish forever.

Bowie is certainly one of the lucky pups who gets to join his humans on adventures such as this. Not only is this a fun practice for dogs, but it turns out to be an important one, too.

Why Giving Your Puppy New Experiences Is So Important

For puppies, the world is still brand new—which is why early experiences can have such a big impact on how they grow and respond to life later on. During their first few months, puppies are especially open to new sights, sounds, people, places, and routines, making it an important time to gently introduce them to the world around them.

Experts agree that positive experiences during this stage help puppies build confidence and feel more comfortable in unfamiliar situations as they get older. Whether it’s hearing new sounds, walking on different surfaces, meeting other dogs, or simply watching a sunrise for the first time like Bowie, these small moments help shape how they understand their environment.

Socialization also helps reduce fear and anxiety later in life. Puppies who are gradually exposed to new experiences in a calm, positive way are often more adaptable, easier-going, and comfortable handling change as adults.

Puppy development writer Pat Hastings also says that these early experiences help puppies develop confidence and “bounceback,” or the ability to recover from unfamiliar situations without fear. The more positive experiences puppies have early on, the more comfortable and adaptable they often become as adult dogs.

Of course, it’s important not to overwhelm them. The goal isn’t to throw a puppy into every possible situation at once—it’s to let them explore at their own pace while building positive associations along the way.

And judging by this little Golden's reaction to his first sunrise, some experiences really do leave a lasting impression.

Miniature Dachshund Joins Olivia Rodrigo's 'Drop Dead' Online Trend—and the Result Is Adorable

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 4:55pm

This adorable miniature dachshund just joined the Olivia Rodrigo "Drop Dead" online trend. In the video, the pup is sitting in bed with a laptop in front of him. He's browsing the internet and comes across two pictures that catch his attention: one of a live chicken and one of a cooked chicken. The photos are in sync with the music, while the lyrics say, "one night I was bored in bed," the photo of the live chicken appears. The continuation of the lyrics, "and stalked you on the internet," is followed by a photo of the cooked chicken.

I'm sure that if our furry friends had access to the internet and were allowed to browse as much as we do, they'd probably be stalking chickens, too.

Olivia Rodrigo's "Drop Dead" Online Trend

Rodrigo recently released the song "Drop Dead," the first single from her upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, which drops on June 12. The song sparked a viral online trend, with content creators using the music in a variety of ways, but the most popular seems to be highlighting the beginning of their relationships with their significant others.

The chorus of the song is used in the trend, with the highlighted lyric being: "One night I was bored in bed, and stalked you on the internet. It's feminine intuition, 'cause I always had a vision of us standing like this."

Creators are including photos of their partners from before they were together, and current photos of them as a couple.

It's very funny that this adorable miniature dachshund joined the trend by stalking a chicken on the internet, but it's not surprising, considering this pup has over 800,000 subscribers on YouTube. The channel @gunnerandgreta posts videos of the brother-and-sister duo, Gunner and Greta. When they're not stalking chicken on the internet and listening to Rodrigo's songs, they're playing outside and enjoying their time together.

The online community also really enjoyed the video, with users sharing their opinions. Someone wrote, "You are just so sweet and adorable and wanting your chicken." Another person stated that this precious miniature dachshund wants to "steal the chickens." Do you think this was his idea all along? No matter the reasoning behind the video, we can all agree that this is the cutest rendition of this online trend.

The 6 Most Vocal Cat Breeds

If you’d love to get a cat that loves to talk, you’re in the right place. After all, some breeds are naturally more vocal than others, using meows, chirps and purrs to communicate with their humans throughout the day. According to veterinarians, these chatty cats aren’t just noisy, they’re often highly social, affectionate, and eager to interact.

If cats had a talk radio channel, the Siamese would be the host, producer, caller and person yelling over the commercial break, says Dr. Tony Johnson, veterinarian at Noah’s Animal Hospitals and diplomate of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society as they are known as a vocal cat breed.

“These cats are famous for their loud, raspy and very opinionated voices,” he explains. “They don’t just meow, they command.”

Siamese cats are deeply social and tend to form strong attachments with their people. These talkative cats might even vocalize what they think about your activities, demand food updates and insist on being involved in everything you’re doing, whether or not they’re invited to the party.

The Siamese will also narrate their dissatisfaction in great detail until someone responds. “These cats do best in homes where someone is around often, because a lot of their vocalizing is driven by social needs,” says veterinarian Dr. Sarah Wooten.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Playful, social
  • Weight: 5-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10-20 years

The Oriental Shorthairs are one of the most talkative cat breeds overall, and they don’t limit themselves to a single style of communication. They chat frequently with their people and use sounds that range from soft chirps to dramatic yowls.

These vocal cats are curious, social and highly interactive. They love to follow their owners from room to room and offer constant commentary along the way. They also tend to have strong opinions about daily routines.

“They’re ideal for owners who enjoy an interactive, communicative pet and don’t mind a running commentary throughout the day,” Wooten says.

Johnson notes their vocal nature is closely tied to their intelligence. “These talkative cats bond very closely and often use their voices to stay involved in everything,” he says. Privacy, therefore, isn’t exactly part of their personality package.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Playful, elegant
  • Weight: 5-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10–20 years

Another one of the most vocal cat breeds are Bengals! These felines aren't just fans of meowing, but they are also energetic, athletic and extremely expressive. Their voices tend to match their high activity levels.

“They often vocalize to initiate play, get attention or express frustration if they’re under-stimulated,” Wooten says. “A bored Bengal will often get louder, not quieter, to voice their needs."

Bengals are talkative partners whose communication can sound urgent, as if every moment is a matter of national security. Because of this, they thrive in environments that offer climbing structures, puzzle toys and regular interaction.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Inquisitive, spirited, loving
  • Weight: 6-15 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12–20 years
Sphynx A hairless cat that loves to talk and be vocal.

Sphynx cats may lack fur, but they’re certainly not lacking in the personality department and you'll often hear them communicate with meows and chirps.

“These cats crave warmth, attention and human contact, and they’re usually very clear about all three,” Johnson explains. “These talktaive cats often communicate with frequent meows, body language, climbing, head bumps and dramatic blanket-seeking behavior.”

Overall, Sphynx cats are affectionate and demand to be physically close to their humans. They’re not subtle about their needs and rarely wait quietly for attention. “These hairless cats crave constant interaction,” Wooten says.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Loyal, affectionate
  • Weight: 6-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 7–15 years
Burmese A vocal grey cat that loves to meow.

Burmese cats are social and charming purr machines with gentle yet persistent voices. “They’re talkative cats, but usually in a softer, sweeter way than a Siamese,” Johnson says. “Think less ‘town hall meeting’ and more ‘friendly neighbor leaning over the fence.’”

These chatty felines enjoy companionship and stay close to their humans throughout the day. Burmese don’t like to be ignored and will use their voice to maintain and establish connection. Their vocal style often includes soft meows, chirps and small sounds that are more conversational than demanding.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Affectionate, sweet, people-oriented
  • Weight: Varies
  • Lifespan: 12+ years

If you love large cats, you'll be a fan of this cat breed that likes to meow. “Maine Coons are the big, fluffy surprise on this list because they often sound much smaller than they look,” Johnson says. “Instead of loud meows, many use chirps, trills and soft little conversational sounds. It’s like having a small bobcat who communicates by bird noise.”

Despite their massive size, Maine Coons are gentle communicators. They tend to bond closely with their families and express themselves in soft, friendly ways that aren’t usually overwhelming. “Don’t overlook their quiet vocal styles,” Wooten adds. “Subtle sounds can still reflect a highly communicative cat.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Gentle, friendly, affectionate
  • Weight: 12-22 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12.5+ years

Patient Golden Retriever Gives Baby a 'Lesson' in the Art of Fetch

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 3:55pm

Dogs are some of the smartest animals on the planet, which makes them really great at teaching all humans a thing or two. A game of fetch doesn't just happen by accident. They use the power of suggestion to show how it's done, and the earlier, the better.

Toffee, the Golden Retriever, is an elite "doggy "fetch professor," currently teaching her human sibling Phoebe the art of the game, and you won't believe how this plays out!

@talesoftoffee

Replying to @Kim Marie Foot Phoebe is learning to throw. Toffee has appointed herself fetch coach. Nobody asked her to do this. She has done it anyway. The Supaw Nanny has added ball sports to her list of responsibilities and she will not be taking questions about it. #dogandbaby #familydog #goldenretriever #dogmumsoftiktok #dogmumsoftiktok

♬ Matilda Soundtrack by David Newman - Miscellaneous Nostalgia

The toddler stage is a fun one, and Toffee wastes no time getting in on the action, as she brings the baby a ball and waits for the big toss so she can retrieve and repeat.

Phoebe may not fully understand what's happening here, but Toffee, in her loving, patient way, highlights the subtle manner in which dogs train us to do what they want (and it's pretty incredible, TBH), even for a sweet playtime sesh.

As Phoebe learns to throw, Toffee "has appointed herself fetch coach," the caption says. Though no one asked her to do this, "The Supaw Nanny has added ball sports to her list of responsibilities, and she will not be taking questions about it!"

That's not even the best part.

Related: Golden Retriever Wearing Ruffled Dress and Matching Bows Looks Like an Actual Angel

Teaching *her* toddler fetch isn't the only thing on Toffee's list. The doting Golden Retriever takes great pride in watching over her human sister, and she has no issue letting Mom know when she disapproves.

Even her bio jokes, "She judges. We parent. She disapproves," proving Toffee is in charge around these parts. If Phoebe gets into something Toffee doesn't like—such as maneuvering a walker—the opinionated pup will intervene (and it's the cutest thing ever)!

@talesoftoffee

Replying to @Petxines The baby got a walker. The walker lasted approximately four seconds before the Supaw Nanny intervened and she has not moved since. This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets a very stubborn golden retriever. #goldenretriever #dogandbaby #familydog #dogjudgesparenting #dogmumsoftiktok

♬ Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64, Act 1: Dance of the Knights - André Previn Why Golden Retrievers Are Great Dogs for Babies

When it comes to an "ideal" family pet, Golden Retrievers are it because what you see is what you get. The breed is beloved because of their patient, gentle, and affectionate disposition, particularly with children, and it shows in these precious moments, like that between Toffee and Phoebe.

Pups like Toffee are emotionally intelligent and can handle the unpredictable nature of young kids, serving as protectors, nurturers, and the ultimate family companions. Once the little humans are properly trained in the art of playing fetch, all is right in the world—just ask Toffee!

This Dachshund Seems To Believe His Mom Is the Only Safe Place in the World

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 3:55pm

There are clingy dogs, and then there are Dachshunds who act like emotional support shadow creatures sent to follow one specific human around forever.

A tiny merleLonghaired Mini Dachshund named Franklin is currently making the internet emotional after a sweet video showed him repeatedly snuggling as close to his mom as physically possible throughout the day.

♬ Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby - Cigarettes After Sex

TikTok user @franklin.the.sausage.dog shared the heartmelting clip alongside the caption, “Rich in life because I have a little creature who thinks the safest place on earth is right next to me.”

And honestly? That single sentence alone nearly took people out emotionally.

Related: Plush Dachshund's Colossal Marshmallow Mitts Look Like Polar Bear Paws

The video shows Franklin cuddled beside his mom in different, quiet, everyday moments, looking perfectly content as long as he is touching her in some way. Sometimes he is tucked beside her. Sometimes he is pressed against her chest. Sometimes he is just quietly existing nearby like a tiny furry security blanket with legs.

People in the Comments Immediately Understood the Feeling

• “I’m crying right now because he is so cute.”
• “Dachshunds are the absolute most.”
• “You are so lucky to have a baby that loves you this hard. Oh my heart.”
• “We just don’t deserve dogs.”
• “A literal angel on earth.”

Others said the video felt extremely relatable for fellow Dachshund parents.

“I’m watching this in bed with my little Doxxie pupper, and she’s doing the same thing!” one person shared.

Honestly, Dachshunds really do act like tiny emotionally intense Victorian children who simply cannot survive without direct physical contact at all times.

Meanwhile, my Maine Coon, Meatball, behaves similarly except with slightly more dramatic flopping and significantly more fur in my coffee.

Are Dachshunds Affectionate Dogs? @zvbjy7547

♬ original sound - zvbjy7547

Dachshunds are famously affectionate and deeply loyal dogs who often form extremely strong attachments to their people. Many Dachshunds prefer staying physically close to their families and are known for following their favorite humans from room to room throughout the day.

Because they were originally bred to work closely with humans while hunting, Dachshunds tend to bond intensely and often thrive on companionship, cuddling, and routine interaction.

This honestly explains why so many Dachshund parents end up with tiny sausage-shaped shadows attached to them for life.

This Dog Parent Works a Stressful Job to Afford Their Shiba Inu's Regal Lifestyle

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 2:55pm

This dog parent, content creator @KyloTheDoge, has over 900,000 subscribers on YouTube, where they post videos of their adorable Shiba Inu, Kylo. In one of their most recent videos, they showed their pup relaxing on a fluffy carpet, with his eyes closed, and wearing wired headphones connected to an iPod. How cute is that?

The video was captioned with, "POV: You're working a stressful job, so your dog can do this all day." And I'm sure any dog parent can understand this, because the more you work, the more cute items you want to purchase for your dog. Why buy an iPod for yourself when they look much cuter on your furry friend?

The comment section weighed in, with one user sharing, "Kylo deserves to be pampered." Right? Let's add some more hours to this dog parent's work schedule. As a matter of fact, get Kylo another iPod. He deserves it! Another user agreed with this sentiment, "Worth it." Someone else wrote, "And the problem is?" Everyone seems to be on Kylo's side, and how could we not be?

Get to Know the Shiba Inu

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/tb-6XUCPDi0

But don't be fooled by this video alone, even though Kylo is calm and relaxed, taking a nap while listening to music, Shiba Inus are actually very active and energetic dogs.

It's a Japanese breed of small to medium-sized hunting dogs, well-suited to mountainous terrain and hiking adventures. Although even the most energetic dogs will enjoy downtime, relaxing by their owners' feet while they work, this is definitely an occasional event. Even for Kylo.

Kylo can easily outrun his humans. In the video above, Kylo is competing against his parent trying to run faster than them. The human gives themselves a head start and, even with that advantage, still loses the competition. Kylo runs much faster and reaches his parents very quickly and easily.

In other videos, Kylo is seen running, playing, and barking as loud as he can. And now it's easy to understand why he needed a relaxing nap, right? After hours of activities and exercise, a puppy needs a break—just so he can do it all over again later.

This Sweet Pittie Was Facing Euthanasia Until a Grieving Woman Made One Last Visit

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 2:48pm

The first hit is the quiet moments. Then the routines that are no longer there. You still expect to hear paws crossing the floor.

For one woman, who shared her story on Reddit's r/rescuedogs, the grief of saying goodbye to her dog, who had been with her for eight years, was still fresh when she came across a photo of a pit bull at a local shelter.

Despite the fresh loss, she couldn't let this pit bull go. The dog was scheduled for euthanasia, and she had to intervene.

She drove to the shelter and saved the girl on a Monday, just hours before it would have been too late.

The woman wasn't planning to adopt another dog, but despite not feeling ready, she couldn't let this pit bull meet an untimely fate.

Immediate Transformation

In her Reddit post, the woman shared images of the rescued pit bull, and the difference between the before-and-after adoption photos is obvious, with many Redditors taking notice.

"That's a great looking dog and the before and after says everything. She's got the biggest smile now," one person wrote.

Another added, "The best way to help deal with grief is to save a life."

A New Chapter for Both of Them

For some people, adopting a new pet after losing a longtime one takes time. For others, helping another animal is part of the healing process.

This isn't about moving on from a beloved pet. Grief doesn't replace one relationship with another. You carry the love forward. As one commenter said, "You've done a very good thing - for both of you. She's the next part of the journey and I hope you enjoy a lot of time together."

If you take a look at the giant smile on the rescued pittie's face, she seems to be in the right place—happy about her new lease on life.

Hummingbird Stops By to Help Feed Baby Birds Like a Little Angel

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 2:00pm

Spring is bittersweet for me, because while I love the warmer weather and all of the life breathing back into the earth and all that jazz, I know spring is a tough season. Kittens are born into hard lives, baby animals everywhere are in danger, and some are even abandoned by their parents.

One Hummingbird is doing all she can to make sure that even the unfortunate babies know some love. Recently, a kind rescue rescued a nest of baby Hummingbirds whose mama hadn't been coming around to feed them, only for a different Hummingbird to come on by and save the day:

@yggdrasilwildlife

the local hummingbirds found our babies and started feeding them! #wildliferehab #wildlife #hummingbird

♬ original sound - Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescu

According to the Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue, it's actually not just one Hummingbird who's stopped by to feed the babies. A bunch of them have been, but they just happened to catch this one on video. It takes a village, after all, and these baby birds definitely have one!

There are three babies in the artificial nest they've made: two in one little nest, who are related, and one off to the side. That lonely one is also an orphan, though he was found at a different time. She "leaves him out" in this clip, but don't worry: she came back later and made sure he got some.

Related: Rare Hot Pink Hummingbird Is Pure Fairy-Tale Magic

This is the only video on the account of these sweet little guys: they're fairly new to the world. Hopefully, we'll see more as they grow! For now, though, they're also taking care of other babies. Squirrel babies:

@yggdrasilwildlife

Baby squirrel season is in full swing! Did you know baby squirrels are born blind and don’t open their eyes until around 5 weeks old? They’re fully weaned by 9-10 weeks and ready for release back into the wild at around 14-16 weeks. During this time, they’re extremely vulnerable — many come into care and rescue after falling from nests or being displaced during tree trimming. Please be mindful when pruning trees and shrubs this season.

♬ Turnaround Reprise - Hans Zimmer & Camille

I've never seen baby squirrels before, but now I want to keep them as pets! I might never get over how cute they are!

What to Feed Baby Hummingbirds

If you find a nest of abandoned baby Hummingbirds, time is of the essence. These babies need to eat very frequently to stay alive: just a few hours without a feeding could be enough to kill them.

An up-close shot of a Hummingbird.

Once you're positive that they've been abandoned, the smartest thing to do is contact a wildlife rescue. However, while you're waiting for them, odds are you'll need to feed them. The diet their mother provides is high-protein, but temporarily, a sugar-water solution (1:4) will work fine. Give them a little bit every 15-20 minutes until the professionals can get them to safety.

Luckily, the baby Hummingbirds at this rescue are loved and well-cared for. I hope they all live long, happy lives!

With an easy-to-use control panel, you can adjust lighting and airflow based on your surroundings, helping maintain a calm, stable environment inside the carrier and regulating ventilation to keep air circulating and temperatures balanced. Combined with its padded, ergonomic back support and ventilated panels, this bag easily positions itself as a comfortable carrier for both you and your pet.

"I got into a car accident and the breezy dome kept my cat safe, small dents but it's still intact," one fan raved in a review, adding, "10/10 would recommend."

Others chimed in, with one calling the carrier "pretty and practical" and noting that after recently using it, they "love it" and so does their cat.

"We bought it for the Canadian Sphinx," another shopper added. "She really liked it, and immediately climbed into it." They continued, "the quality is very good, it is large and roomy, everything is thought out to the smallest detail. We immediately bought a power bank for the ventilation and lighting system."

At the moment, shoppers can choose from green, pink and white colorways, though we've personally got our eyes set on pink. Whichever color you choose, however, the end result is all the same: a happy, cozy cat, less stress on your back and a more streamlined way to travel. Add this bag to your rotation while it's still in stock, and check out this super stylish pet carrier from Kith while you're at it.

Sweet Rescue Dog Gets the Most Unexpected 'Forrest Gump'-Inspired Name

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 12:48pm

The internet has officially fallen in love with a puppy who somehow looks both incredibly long and unbelievably tiny at the same time.

There is something charming about dogs that run through the world from a few inches off the ground. Tank, a possible Labrador retriever-dachshund mix, is a rescue dog who has recently gained popularity on Reddit's r/lookatmydog.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

His mom posted him, and fans loved his unusual build, expressive face, and a nickname that pays homage to one of the greatest movies of all time.

The Forrest Gump Nickname Happened Instantly

Here is the fun part. His actual name is Tank, but according to his mom, the Forrest Gump-inspired nickname happened almost immediately.

She explained, "I've been calling him 'Lieutenant Dan' cause he ain't got no legs." The fans took the joke and went with it.

"He looks like he's about to demand snacks with great confidence," one commenter wrote.

Another perfectly described the puppy's proportions: "So long, yet so short, yet so good!"

Related: This Dancing Labrador Retriever Has More Rhythm Than Most Humans

A Puppy With Many Names

Tank came to his forever home with a completely different name. According to his mom, "He came to us named Howie and when I picked him up I said 'this is not a Howie, this is a tank' and boom."

And if you look at him, you can instantly see why. Tank has the compact, low-to-the-ground body that makes every movement feel and look dramatic.

A Mixed Puppy With Tiny Legs

People on the Reddit post tried to guess his heritage, with a few guessing correctly that he might be a Labrador retriever and dachshund mix. His family believes it too, saying, "We think a lab/daschound mix but one of his brothers new moms did a DNA test so we'll find out for sure soon."

If that is true, it will help explain a lot. Dachshunds are famous for their short legs, while Labradors have larger paws and a broad face. Tank might be the perfect Lab-dachshund mix, part athletic sporting dog, and part animated cartoon.

Beyond the jokes, there's something lovable about rescue dogs with unique appearances. Tank isn't the perfect purebred; he looks real. And judging by Reddit's reaction, Lieutenant Dan already has a growing fan club.

The Name Challenge

Dogs thrive on consistency, and when a pup has many nicknames, things can get confusing. Pet parents should stick to one primary name for training purposes. Nicknames are fine for joking around with your pup, but stick to one name during training.

Tank, for example, has had to learn to respond to Howie, Tank, and, perhaps, Lieutenant Dan.

The trick is to get everyone in the household on the same page, so make sure to pick a name that sticks.

Abandoned Pet Turtle Living in Pond Is So Grateful for Woman Bringing Food

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 12:00pm

Turtles are, unfortunately, one of those pets that a lot of people get, though they know next to nothing about them. They're kept in tiny tanks, not given enough enrichment, and frequently surrendered or downright abandoned. It breaks my heart!

When one woman saw an abandoned pet turtle in a pond, she simply couldn't just stand by and do nothing. She decided to bring him some food, and clearly, he was incredibly grateful for it:

@cjmiami

I’m not sure who dropped off some of these turtles, but they seem grateful. On average, I count about 20 behind my house during feeding time. They’ve become a great addition to life on the lake. #turtles #animalfriends

♬ original sound - noahksticks

CJ Miami has this pond in her backyard: it's absolutely stuffed with turtles who were once people's pets. This isn't some kind of rescue operation, either: someone just dumped them there, and that was that. As a turtle lover myself (I have a Yellow-Bellied Slider, and I have had him for 12 years), it just breaks my heart.

This boy looks like a Southern Painted turtle, which is a pretty common species to keep as pets. Apparently, there are about 20 turtles living in this lake, and most of them were dumped. Others were probably the offspring of those dumped turtles.

Related: Tortoiseshell Kitty Becomes Rare ‘Snapping Turtle Cat’ When Orange Sister Gets on Her Nerves

Luckily, in Miami, these turtles will have a relatively easy time staying safe. Southern Painted turtles are native to the area, and the hot days make it easy for them to bask. Miami is also home to a wide variety of bugs, and there are most likely some fish in that lake, too. The pellets are a nice supplement, though. CJ also hand-raises swans:

@cjmiami

I predicted May 9th would be the day Sarah’s eggs would hatch… and today is the day. 🦢🥚 So far, no babies yet, but fingers crossed we’ll see little cygnets arriving over the next few days.

♬ The warmth of nature - masumi&mugi

The swans and turtles get along pretty well most of the time, though they can get in some trouble during feeding time. Swans will often try to hiss in order to intimidate turtles (or anyone) into letting them eat first, but luckily, CJ was not having it.

Why Do People Abandon Turtles?

Take it from me: turtles are not easy to take care of. They have incredibly specific requirements and strong personalities. Blink and something might go wrong! Plus, turtles sold in pet stores are often marketed as "desk pets," which is just plain evil. A lot of people have no idea how big they get.

A Red-Eared Slider close to the camera.

Turtles may seem like an "easy" pet for kids, and in some ways, they are. They're a little hardier than, say, a fish, but they're a big commitment. There are a few things that typically lead to a turtle being abandoned or surrendered:

  • Their size: they outgrow "starter" tanks quickly.
  • Their needs: a lot of people don't realize how much work it is to take care of a turtle.
  • Their lifespans: depending on the turtle, you're looking at 30+ years.
  • Their temperaments: people often get bored with "look, don't touch" types of pets.
  • Expenses: turtles are not cheap to care for!

My turtle, Mr. Turtle, has a custom-built cabinet with a built-in faucet. He's a very loved, very pampered turtle. May he and this sweet turtle both live long, happy lives!

English Setter Is a Total ‘Freckle Puppy’ and We Can’t Get Enough

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 11:00am

Puppies with a bunch of spots are the best. Freckles are cute on anybody, but they're especially cute on our furry friends! A lot of puppies are born with little patches and freckles, only for them to fill in when they get older. Losing the puppy spots is one of the only downsides of them growing up.

One English Setter might be the most freckly puppy who has ever lived. He's just the cutest, and he has those freckles all over his little face! He's squishy, furry, and you just have to see him:

@mrbill.englishsetter

* No mulch was consumed in the making of this video * Mom was successful in thwarting Mr. Bill’s plan of eating every piece of mulch in the yard. #puppytiktok #englishsetter #mrbill #dogsoftiktok

♬ The Benny Hill Show - The Edwin Davids Jazz Band

Mr. Bill the English Setter is a troublemaker, but that's par for the course with a puppy. He's perfected one of the most common puppy tricks: making mom think he has to go potty, but he actually runs away and goes to eat mulch. We've all been there. It's just part of having a puppy!

Mr. Bill wasn't able to eat every piece of mulch the yard had to offer before his mom managed to wrangle him, but he did get a couple of pieces in. Luckily for him, his sweet little freckles act as a perpetual "get out of jail free" card.

Related: English Setter's Gorgeous Cookies and Cream Color Has Everyone in Awe

Mr. Bill is only about 4 months old, but his freckles are only getting deeper, and he's only getting cuter as time goes on. When he's not trying to snack on some mulch, he likes to be inside, snuggling mom to try and get ahead of the next time he gets in trouble:

@mrbill.englishsetter

Enjoying the little moments🩵

♬ original sound - Finley

He's being very sweet there, but make sure you remember that it's all for show. Those freckles are full of mischief and deceit!

Why Do Some Puppies Have Freckles?

A lot of puppies are born with freckles! English Setters are freckle dogs in general: they're born with some, but develop more over time. Eventually, their entire faces are a little polka dot dream.

An English Setter standing outside.

Many puppies are born with some freckles because their pigment will continue to develop as they age. It's the same as with their:

  1. Eye color.
  2. Coat color.
  3. Skin color.

You might notice that your dog, even if they don't have freckles, gets darker as they age. That's completely normal, and it's completely normal to mourn their puppy freckles, too. They're just so sweet!

Adorable DIY Sock Kitten Is the Cozy Surprise Cats and Dogs Didn't Know They Needed

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 10:48am

Did you know that your laundry room might be hiding a secret tool for pet enrichment? You can make a new toy for your pet without a trip to the pet store.

While some DIY projects look homemade in the worst possible way, this one looks alive and real.

A YouTube Short gives pet parents a new idea for a DIY project. With just socks, crayons and pencils, you can make a beautiful baby kitten. The finished result is surprisingly adorable.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/aWlwJhfDoO0

A Simple DIY Project

The project starts with two socks, shaped and stuffed to create the kitten's body and head. Then, a coloring crayon adds soft patches of fur and tiny details, while pencils finish the design with eyebrows, mouth, and everything in between.

That simplicity is why so many people fell in love with it.

Pet Parents Fell in Love With

One commenter summed up the mood perfectly: "I'm making that now thanks."

Others filled the comment section with reactions like "so cute" and "adorable," with many saying they immediately wanted to try it for their own pets.

For cat parents, the tiny sock kitten could work as a comforting buddy for shy cats. Dog parents, on the other hand, can give their pups this "sock" as a toy to play with for several minutes.

Related: See the Rare Moment a Golden Retriever Realizes a Big Ball Is Actually Life-Changing

Why Do Pets Love Soft Toys

Every pet parent has brought home a new plush toy only to watch their dog proudly parade it around the house like a treasure. And you might already picture what will happen next with this toy. The sock kitten is just the right size for your dog to carry, soft enough to cuddle, and oddly realistic in a way pets seem to notice immediately.

There's actually a reason soft companion-style toys can matter to animals more than people realize. Many dogs are naturally drawn to plush toys that mimic small animals because they trigger comfort, curiosity or nurturing instincts.

Cats, especially young kittens or recently adopted cats, love soft objects that hold warmth and familiar textures.

Rescue organizations occasionally even use stuffed companions to comfort orphaned kittens during feeding and sleep.

Here is a tip: if you rescued a pet recently, making this DIY toy with a familiar scent can be more appealing to a nervous dog. That is what makes this project feel a bit more personal than others. And judging by the reactions online, many pet parents are probably digging through their sock drawers.

Senior Pregnant Beagle Rescued From Lab Enjoys the Outdoors for the First Time and We're Emotional

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 10:10am

More than 1,500 Beagles were recently rescued from Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin breeding and recent facility, and are experiencing love and security for the very first time. After Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy negotiated a confidential agreement to purchase the 1,500 dogs for an undisclosed price from Ridglan Farms, the Beagles were placed with rescue organizations that are giving these precious pooches the healing touch and environment they need.

One senior Beagle is expecting puppies and got to feel the sun on her face for the first time in her entire life and you can easily see her gratitude.

@meraclepaws

We've carried 1000 Lab Beagles out of that place into freedom. So many of them were seniors… dogs who spent their entire lives in cages breeding puppies for experiments and testing. This sweet senior mama had never touched grass, breathed fresh air, or felt the sun on her face. Today I held her while she lifted her head to the sky and tasted sunshine with her little tongue for the very first time. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this moment for the rest of my life. In the TikTok from @meraclepaws, one of the rescuers held the sweet senior Beagle in her arms as the darling dog held her head up toward the sun. The Beagle's eyes were closed as she took in the warmth and got to finally experience fresh air. The rescue organization revealed how dire the situation was for these canines.

"We've carried 1000 Lab Beagles out of that place into freedom," the caption shared. "So many of them were seniors… dogs who spent their entire lives in cages breeding puppies for experiments and testing."

The pregnant Beagle was one of the many survivors from the breeding and research facility. These dogs were held in horrible conditions and finally got to experience basic pleasures like affection, gentleness, and even the outdoors.

"This sweet senior mama had never touched grass, breathed fresh air, or felt the sun on her face," the story continued. "Today I held her while she lifted her head to the sky and tasted sunshine with her little tongue for the very first time. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this moment for the rest of my life."

Rescued Beagles Are Receiving Adoption Applications

The Beagles seemed to sense that their rescuers were there to set them free and quickly began to trust the animal advocates.

“They started within an hour or so coming up to us, wanting attention," Big Dog Ranch Rescue Founder and President Lauree Simmons said, according to NBC Miami. "Some crawled in people’s laps. Every single one of them is super sweet. I think they are loving the attention. I just know they know they’re safe.”

Over 700 adoption applications have been received so far for these Beagles, though the rescued dogs need some time to heal before heading to their forever homes.

Woman Reveals the Best Flower for Attracting Hummingbirds—and It’s Gorgeous

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 10:00am

It's Hummingbird season! If you're anything like me, you're racing to try anything that might bring them to your yard. I love Hummingbirds, but I've only seen a few of them in my yard. It's so sad!

Maybe I just don't have the right plants. Luckily, a woman who's had a lot of success with attracting Hummingbirds in the past recently shared her secret: the best flower to plant if you want to see some Hummingbirds. Not only is it the best, though, it's also beautiful!

@lenanagori

If you want hummingbirds in your yard, plant Cuphea (cigar plant) 🌺 I planted this here in Vancouver and didn’t expect to see hummingbirds this often! It’s one of the easiest nectar-rich flowers they LOVE 🩷🌿 #hummingbird

♬ originalljud - user9283848281934

Lena Nagori has cracked the code! I'll definitely be taking some pointers from this video, especially since it's kind of a two birds, one stone scenario: it attracts hummingbirds, and it looks nice. The plant is Cuphea, AKA Cigar Plant. It's called that because of the brownish-red tubular flowers; they kind of look like cigars.

She keeps hers in a pot, though you could definitely plant it as well. The Hummingbirds don't seem to mind it being in a pot. All they care about is the yummy nectar inside! Someone in the comments did mention that Japanese Lady Beetles also love it, though, so if you love in an area with lots of them, try another flower instead.

Related: Rare Hot Pink Hummingbird Is Pure Fairy-Tale Magic

Lena lives in Vancouver, and she hasn't had any issues so far! The cigar plant is easy to care for and very nectar-rich, which means it'll quickly become a neighborhood favorite for Hummingbirds, honeybees, and any other nectar lovers. Vancouver is full of beautiful flowers:

@lenanagori

Peak bloom is here 🌸 blink and it’s gone 🙈

♬ LOVE THERAPHY - FELIS TIGRIS

Hummingbirds love cherry blossoms, too! They're a super important food source in the early springtime, before other flowers have started to bloom.

Why Do Hummingbirds Like Cigar Plants?

Cigar plants are a great idea if you want to attract Hummingbirds, especially if you're just starting out. They need frequent watering, but other than that, they're low maintenance.

A Hummingbird flying near a cigar plant.

Hummingbirds are attracted to cigar plants because they're:

  • Brightly colored and easy to see.
  • Comfortable to "drink" from.
  • High producers, meaning lots of nectar.
  • Usually growing in abundance, so it's a long-term resource.

If you're going to plant them, just make sure they're not sprayed with any chemicals. You'll be the talk (or, them hum?) of the town!

Cat Sees Dad Dancing and Legit Rolls His Eyes in Pure Annoyance

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 9:20am

Our beloved cats can sometimes be our harshest critics, and this hilarious cat video is a perfect example of that.

It appears that thisTabby cat rolls his eyes at his dad's dancing to Cardi B, and it's pure comedy gold.

The moment perfectly encapsulates why people love it when cats act like humans (even if they're making fun of us).

@tamitalian

our homophobic cat does not appreciate queer art

♬ original sound - Michael & Ajay Can Cats Really Roll Their Eyes?

So the question now is: Did the kitty really roll his eyes because he found his dad's dance moves to be lame or annoying?

It was timed so perfectly that it looks like the Tabby did indeed have a reaction to his dad's dancing, but could this really happen?

According to VetsExplainCats, yes, cats can roll their eyes.

They don't have as much motion as humans, but they can certainly move their eyes in different directions, and this includes rolling them with their eye muscles.

And yes, rolling their eyes can happen when they are annoyed or disinterested.

But do be on alert if your cat is excessively rolling their eyes or showing other abnormal eye movements, as it could be a sign of a bigger health issue.

However, there is also a chance that another eye movement could mimic eye rolling, such as half-closed eyes, wide-eyed staring, or a squinting or narrowing gaze.

It could also be the kitty's eyes following movement, appearing to be a roll. This is part of their natural hunting instincts.

This Viral Cat Video Is Peak Feline Sass

Cats are known for often displaying some attitude, but this Tabby may take home the top prize for this eye roll in this viral cat video.

There are a lot of other ways the kitty could have displayed his attitude, such as raising his tail or meowing, purring, hissing, and growling.

But instead, he gave us that glorious eye roll, and it made our day!

This Rescue Dog Once Hid From Everyone Under Cars—Now Watch Her at the Beach

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 9:10am

Niall Harbison treats the dogs he saves through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, like royalty. Providing food and health care for these precious pooches, Harbison also gives them unlimited love and affection, along with some special field trips.

Curly the canine cutie was recently brought to Happy Doggo and whisked away to her own seaside adventure.

View this post on Instagram

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo gave some details on Curly's background, showing how she protected herself after being pushed out of a street dog pack.

"Curly lived her whole life on the streets until recently," the caption explained. "We found Curly hiding under cars to escape bigger dogs. She deserved better than a life spent in the shadows, so we brought her to Happy Doggo Land."

Named for the adorable curl on her tail, Curly was found cowering under vehicles after a previous attack by other dogs. The fur baby was known for her happy and carefree disposition, which dramatically changed after the traumatizing event. Harbison knew Curly needed his help and brought her to his sanctuary for some much-needed healing.

Under the tender care of Harbison and his Happy Doggo team, Curly slowly got the spring back in her step and found her joy again.

Curly's First Beach Trip

Harbison planned an extra special day for Curly, where she experienced her very first time at the beach. The video captured her pure joy of feeling the sand on her paws and the ocean breeze on her face.

"Today was her first trip to the beach, and watching her running on the sand is everything," the story continued. "She’s safe now, but she’s still waiting for the most important part of her journey… A forever home."

Curly is available for adoption and would make a wonderful addition to a loving family.

Safari Boat Spots ‘Moto Moto’ the Hippo in the Wild—and He’s Definitely Big and Chunky

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 9:00am

Madagascar is my second-favorite movie franchise ever, second only to Shrek, of course. And just like with Shrek, my favorite Madagascar movie is the second one: Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa! It has the best soundtrack, the best visuals, and Moto Moto, who's hilarious.

Recently, one safari boat actually spotted a huge Hippo out in the wild who looks exactly like Moto Moto. He's big, chunky, and probably a huge hip with the rest of the lady Hippos:

@jackykarwathova

I think moto moto likes me 😅🦛 This was such a crazy experience in Chobe National Park! And yes, everyone was safe lol #hippo #chobenationalpark #botswana #motomoto #boatride

♬ original sound - clips_Ahoy

I think Moto Moto likes @jackykarwathova! He was just minding his own business when the boat passed by: this is something animals along popular safari routes will often get used to, but occasionally, something will set them off. That's exactly what happened here.

The Hippo stood up, like, "Don't get any closer!" Despite the fact that it looks like a Hippo would be really fun to pet, you definitely shouldn't. Even if he looks like Moto Moto... Which is on-brand, honestly. If you've seen the movie, you know that Moto Moto wasn't very nice.

Related: Shy Manatee Showing Everyone Her Favorite Rock Has Aquarium-Goers in Tears

This safari didn't just include a slightly scary encounter with a Hippopotamus, though. Jacky also got to see some elephants, and they look even cooler than that Moto Moto lookalike!

@jackykarwathova

This is NOT how I thought this budget safari would go… 😳 I found the cheapest safari of my entire trip in Chobe, Botswana… and somehow it ended up being the best one. Almost no crowds, just us, and some of the most unreal wildlife I’ve ever seen! And the craziest part? It’s right next to Victoria Falls, and hardly anyone goes (totally doable as a day trip btw!) I’m traveling across Africa using public transportation as a solo female traveler and this is part 23… but we’re just getting started! 🫶🏼 Follow along if you’re coming with me. #visitbotswana #africatravel #solofemaletravel #budgetsafari #chobenationalpark

♬ original sound - Jacky Karwáthová

I'm a little too scared to go on a safari myself, but I'll never get enough of watching videos of them. Maybe one day, I'll work up the courage!

Hippos Are Super Dangerous

This is a fun and cool video, but it's important to know that you need to be on your best behavior if there are Hippos around. They might be huge, but they can move very quickly, especially underwater. You can even see the Hippo in the video going under and appearing again, much closer to the boat.

Two Hippos in the water together.

If you spot a Hippo in the wild and it's coming toward you, first of all, hopefully you're on a safari with an experienced guide. If not, however, you should:

  • Start running.
  • Seek higher ground.
  • Climb a tree.
  • Call for help.

Hippos are fast, but they can't climb skinny structures, like trees. Getting up high is the only real way to keep yourself safe in this situation. You should also always make sure to try not to get too close!

These Dogs Treat the Daycare Bus Like a Fashion Week Runway

Mon, 05/11/2026 - 8:55am

Before I had my Corgi, I had no idea about all the ways daycare could help her become a better version of herself. Between socializing with other dogs, enjoying much-needed playtime with friends while I worked, and getting time outside of the house, it's one thing that helped my girl's anxiety and overall well-being.

So, when I come across a bus driver picking up pups for doggy daycare, I'm all in, no questions asked—and this time, they're practicing their model strut as they board. In case you need a daily dose of cuteness, this will do it!

@ashluv73

♬ âm thanh gốc - ashluv73 - ashluv73

All the thanks go to @ashluv73 for sharing this sugary-sweet goodness that happens on the Mo Mountain Mutts daycare bus in Skagway, Alaska, because I'm obsessed! Giving each dog their time in the spotlight to show off their adorable coats, clothes, and even one fella with a tie (I see you, cutie!), is the purest thing on the web, and I wish there were more content like this 24/7/365.

Related: Basset Hound Sees Video of Himself at Day Care and Pure Hilarity Ensues

With so many angels, we couldn't pick a favorite dog—that just wouldn't be right. Instead, here's another look at some of the fun adventures these pooches get to go on when they board the fun train.

Side note: I SO wish we had this kind of thing when my girl attended doggy daycare. Although, I may have quit my job to ride along each day...

@ashluv73

♬ âm thanh gốc - ashluv73 - ashluv73 The Benefits of Doggy Daycare

Not every dog likes going to daycare, (and that's fine), but for those who do, it's an incredible thing for them and you.

Along with improved confidence from regular, consistent socialization in a safe and supervised environment, they get physical activity through lots of playtime and movement. They also get mental stimulation and benefits from less anxiety while hanging out with other dogs instead of being home alone all day.

Daycare is a really good option for parents with reactive dogs and those in need of a routine. And because a lot of these facilities offer training, daycare can teach them how to behave with other pups while having fun. Many of these places offer enrichment activities, which can help cut down on boredom and destructive behavior when they return home.

If you have a place like the one we took our girl to, there might be add-on options, like grooming, which comes in clutch if you're a working parent trying to get all the things done. Whether your dog tries out daycare or not, I'll be over here watching all these videos. If you need a reason to smile, I suggest you do the same!
