There are Golden Retrievers who smile sweetly, and then there are Golden Retrievers who look like they just got a wonderful, awful idea and plan to make it everyone's problem.

This Golden falls firmly into the second category.

In the video, the famous audio from The Grinch plays while the camera zooms in on the Golden Retriever's face. Right on cue, he gives the most perfectly mischievous little smile, like he has been waiting all day for his villain origin story. It's not scary, obviously. He is still a Golden Retriever, which means the "evil plan" is probably stealing socks, refusing to move from the good spot on the couch, or pretending he can't hear you when the fun is over.

The people in the comments section were immediately delighted. One viewer noticed how perfectly the side-eye and smile landed with the audio, like this dog had rehearsed his close-up. Another basically crowned it the grinchiest grin a dog could possibly grin, which feels accurate. His face doesn't just match the sound. It improves it.

That is what makes the clip so rewatchable. It's a simple close-up, but the timing turns it into a tiny holiday movie. You can almost hear him plotting from Mount Crumpit, except instead of stealing Christmas, he's probably stealing attention, claiming a blanket, and maybe investigating one unattended snack.

• Watch the body with the face. A happy-looking grin feels different when it comes with loose posture, soft eyes, and relaxed movement.
• Notice the timing. If your dog "smiles" during greetings, play, and attention, it may be part of their happy routine.
• Look for stress signals, too. Lip licking, a tucked posture, stiffness, or trying to move away means your pup may need space, not more excitement.

Swimming is a fun pastime for many people, especially in the summer when it’s hot and the water helps to cool down. Dogs aren’t any different, and one Golden Retriever knows just how fun swimming can be.

Why Golden Retrievers Are So Obsessed With Water

It’s no surprise that Brew is itching to get in the pool. Golden Retrievers are known to love water and always have a grand time when their parents take them swimming. It’s practically in their DNA!

They love water and swimming for a few reasons. Primarily, these dogs are natural born swimmers. Golden Retrievers have webbed paws, a thick double coat, and a propeller-like tail, which help them thrive in the water. Their webbed paws and tail help Goldens propel themselves through the water, and their coat acts as a water repellent, helping to keep Retrievers well insulated in cold water.

Historically, Golden Retrievers spent a lot of time in the water. These pups were originally bred in the 19th century as hunting companions to retrieve ducks and geese from bodies of water. In the present day, it’s much less common to find a Golden Retriever as a hunting companion. However, when a Golden is enjoying the water with their family, many will ask to play a game of fetch in the water. Their natural instincts tell them to get in the water and retrieve, so it’s no surprise they like to play in the water.

Lastly, it’s hot in the summer! Like humans, they enjoy a dip in the pool to cool off after a long day. Just like Brew, some dogs will have to bed their humans for permission to get in the water. "For high-energy dogs, outdoor water play is a fantastic way to burn off both physical and mental energy," Dr. Bruns explains. "During warmer months, long walks or runs can quickly lead to overheating, but water play, whether in a dog-specific pool or a splash pad, helps keep their core body temperature cool while they stay active safely. Adding floating toys or playing water fetch offers great mental enrichment as well. It tires them out in a healthy, engaging way while keeping them safe from the summer heat. Just remember to always supervise water play and keep plenty of fresh drinking water nearby so they aren't tempted to drink from the pool."

What Makes a Splash Pad or Pool 'Dog-Proof'?

"A truly dog-proof pool or splash pad comes down to the materials and construction. You should always avoid inflatable options, as sharp claws and enthusiastic play will quickly lead to punctures and a deflated pool," Dr. Bruns says. "Instead, look for products made from heavy-duty, puncture-resistant PVC or thick, hard-molded plastic. It's also crucial to ensure the bottom has a textured, slip-resistant surface to prevent injuries when your dog is jumping in and out."

What to Look For in a Canine Water Toy

When shopping for a canine water toy, these are the three things to keep in mind.

1. Buoyancy

"Choose toys specifically designed to float high on the water's surface, as you never want your dog inhaling water while trying to retrieve a sinking object," Dr. Bruns recommends.

2. Visibility

"Because dogs see colors differently than humans, bright yellows and blues are the easiest for them to spot against the water," Dr. Bruns says.

3. Material and size

"Look for durable rubber, neoprene or closed-cell foam, which dry quickly and help reduce mold and bacteria buildup after playtime," Dr. Bruns says. "It's also important to choose the right size for your dog. Larger breeds, like golden retrievers, may need a slightly larger toy. As a general rule, toys should be too large to fit behind your dog's molars to help reduce the risk of choking."

How to Choose the Right Dimensions for Your Breed

"The right dimensions depend entirely on your dog's size and how they like to cool off," Dr. Bruns explains. "As a general rule of thumb, a pool should be wide enough for your dog to comfortably turn around and lie down completely flat with their limbs stretched out."

There are also some different factors to consider when it comes to choosing the right size splash pad versus a pool. "For splash pads, a wider diameter is better for medium and large breeds to give them plenty of space to run through any water jets," Dr. Bruns says. "When it comes to pool depth, safety is really important—the sides must be low enough for your dog to easily step in and out of without needing to jump, and the water level should only ever reach just below their chest when standing."

Don't forget that you should always supervise your dog around water, even in a splash pad or small pool. Now, get outside and enjoy these last few weeks of summertime fun splashing around with your pup!

Rather than treating the tiny bird like prey, Miso and Mochi welcomed the little chick as though it were just another kitten. The curious pair gently sniffed their new feathered friend, carefully inspected the tiny newcomer, and even offered a few soft pats with their paws. At one point, Miso looked ready to roll over for a cuddle.

According to their human mom, the chick hatched at home but was rejected by its mother. Until it's old enough and strong enough to safely join the flock, it'll remain indoors alongside its feline siblings. And it appears that's just fine with these gorgeous Maine Coons.

Why Some Cats Surprise Us With Their Gentleness

While cats are natural predators, their capacity for gentle behavior toward other species isn't entirely surprising to animal behaviorists. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, early socialization plays a significant role in how cats relate to other animals throughout their lives. Positive experiences with different species during kittenhood can have a greater long-term effect than those that occur later in development. Even so, interactions between cats and birds should always be carefully monitored to keep every animal safe.

For a breed already known for its gentle giant reputation, moments like these feel completely on brand. Miso and Mochi aren't just living up to that stereotype; they're making a pretty strong case that some cats are simply born with more heart than anything else.

My dogs aren't music aficionados, though they do love light hits or classical. They bristle at songs that are too loud or chaotic like heavy metal, but anything soft and soothing helps them relax.

Billy the Labrador mix seems to be a connoisseur of classical music and actually demands to hear his melodic symphonies on a regular basis.

In the TikTok from @billy.the.talking.puppy, the precious pooch pawed at the piano pedals to propose an impromptu concert. Apparently, classical music was in Billy's blood.

"Billy's been raised around classical music and requests it nonstop," the on-screen text shared.

When no one sat down to play a tune, Billy tapped on the bench and piano keys to emphasize his musical request. His dad decided to give him a special treat and took him to a music school, where he would be surrounded by his favorite sounds.

Billy heard beautiful music coming from each room and was particularly partial toward the cello. He whined at the door to be let in for a full concert, and the cello player gladly obliged. The canine cutie lay on the floor so he could fully absorb the symphony being played, clearly immersed in the moment.

Followers loved the fur baby's penchant for classical music, with some asking if he may have previously been a performer.

"That dog was once a famous composer and musician in his past life," another noted.

Why Do Some Dogs Respond to Certain Music?

A previous study observed behavior in dogs when different genres of music were played. Canines became agitated and barked when they heard heavy metal. However, when classical music was played, the dogs were calm, relaxed, and even reduced their level of barking.

Typical pop music didn't prompt any significant behaviors that were different from having no sound at all.

Overall, dogs gravitate toward soft, slow music with gentle tones and melodies rather than songs that are too piercing or frenetic. Like Billy, our canine companions seem to enjoy the finer, more sophisticated sounds when it comes to music.

We can’t get enough of these two kitty families! One mom had her litter three weeks ago and the other had her litter one week ago. Since their kittens are so close in age, they are “co-parenting” and sharing their responsibilities with each other. It’s truly remarkable.

People are very impressed by these two mamas. One comment said, “I love Mama cats that co-parent.” Another viewer commented, “Females are always evolving to better their and our conditions.”

Others in the comments are taken by the kittens. One person said, “I’d never get anything done if this was happening at my house,” and another mentioned, “These little babies are so precious. Thank you for sharing.”

Do Cats Really Help Raise Each Other’s Kittens?

These two moms aren’t the only cats who have gotten help with their litters. In fact, it can be quite common for kittens to be co-parented by other mama cats who are present in their lives, a behavior known as alloparenting.

Cats are social animals. In cat colonies, the other cats look after kittens and play with them. One of the reasons for this is to go hunting. A mother cat will leave her litter in the paws of another cat she trusts to get food. While mom is away hunting, kittens will nurse from other lactating cats other than their mom. This ensures proper nutrition for the kittens even when mom is busy or tired. Lastly, mother cats can team up to defend their babies if danger appears. Cats who live in the wild are vulnerable to a number of predators, but there is strength in numbers, so they team up with others to keep their kittens safe.

Cat moms who do not share duties with other cats are less likely to survive, making this cooperative trait more prominent. While these two moms aren’t in the wild, these traits persist and apply to domesticated cats as well.

“At [Animal Care Centers of New York(ACC)] we often put orphaned kittens in with lactating moms, who then begin nursing and providing for them right away,” said cat behaviorist Steven Quandt to Adopt A Pet.

It's absolutely precious to see these two litters cuddling and crawling over each other. Thank goodness these two moms have each other for support!

As a cat mom, I absolutely love seeing how other pet parents help their cats safely explore the world. There's something so magical about watching a kitten experience new sights, sounds and smells for the very first time. Every leaf is fascinating. Every bird is worth studying. And apparently, every crashing ocean wave deserves a front-row seat.

That's exactly what happened when I stumbled across this sweet video of Watson, a tiny tuxedo kitten, visiting the beach in a little harness. Watching such a small kitten discover something as enormous as the ocean made me smile from ear to ear.

Shelter dogs who finally get adopted assume they've gotten their forever family, yet it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes they are returned and have to face life from behind kennel bars all over again, hoping for yet another chance.

Diamond is a young pooch who arrived at Cobb County Animal Services with her mom and sister. The three dogs were each adopted into separate homes, yet Diamond was the only one brought back. A previous post from @sharing.lov3 explained that Diamond was the "most overlooked dog at the shelter" and that no one ever asked to meet her because she was always jumping in her kennel. The precious pooch just needed a few minutes of affection to calm down and show what a snuggle bug she is.

Diamond was surrendered to Cobb County Animal Services along with her mom and sister when her family became homeless. After all three dogs were adopted into separate homes, Diamond was returned back to the shelter in May and started the waiting process all over again. Due to her excitement in the kennel, many potential pet parents passed right by the one-year-old and her adoption chances seemed to lessen each day.

Two months after her return, a woman named Lynda saw Diamond's story on social media and drove over an hour just to meet the canine cutie. It was an instant match.

According to his humans, this means that Phin's underdeveloped cerebellum in his brain causes him to be a little unbalanced when he walks and plays, but it's not painful at all. And despite his differences, this gorgeous boy seems to be a very happy cat.

What Is a Scouse Accent?

When talking about Scouse accents, we're usually talking about people, not cats — but then again, that's part of what makes Phin so special!

"Scouse" is a dialect of English similar to the accents you think of as British, but it has characteristics all its own (just like accents around America can differ widely depending on what state you're from).

As Superprof points out, many people with a Scouse accent are from Liverpool and northern England, and will be heard most commonly in the Liverpool City Region. But why is it called "Scouse"? It comes from the name of a stew called "lobscouse" that was often eaten by sailors, including the ones who docked in the port at Liverpool. Eventually, that led to the accent being known by the name it is today.

The website also pointed out that The Beatles all spoke with this accent, so Phin is in good company indeed.

Is 'The Flop Test' Real?

Anyone who has a Ragdoll will tell you that these cats are famously floppy. Allegedly, the test of a "real" Ragdoll is if you can pick them up and flop them around, hold them in different positions, and generally play around with them without the cat getting upset.

While Ragdoll cats are generally very floppy, not all of them will like flopping around and being handled that way. If yours doesn't, that doesn't mean they're not a real Ragdoll! It just means they don't like it. A better test of a real Ragdoll is:

• Do they have blue eyes?
• Do they have one of the TICA-approved Ragdoll coats?
• Did they come from a reputable breeder or a shelter that did a DNA test?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, then most likely, you have a mixed-breed cat. Not this kitten, though: he's seriously as Ragdoll as it gets!

What to Know About Caring for a Feral Cat Colony

As a cat mom and cat lover in general, I always feel a pull to care for any cat I see — including the ones who seem to be managing their feral lives just fine without me!

Some cat colonies can benefit from having a little human assistance, though (as long as it's safe enough for you to do so, of course). For these cats, who are often referred to as "community cats," the best place to start is the TNRM approach — or trap, neuter, return, monitor — according to the ASPCA.

This means that you'll start by humanely trapping the cats, getting them to a veterinarian who can spay or neuter them, allowing them to recover with a short term foster home, and then returning them to where you found them. From there, you'll continue to check on them, making sure that they have basic needs like food and water met and keep an eye on them to see if they need medical attention.

This is a lot to take on, but as the ASPCA notes, it usually takes a whole community of people to make it happen, and many times, there will be a shelter or other program in your area that will organize the TNRM process or help along the way.

Through TNRM, you can help reduce the number of kittens who are born in these feral colonies, which will help the cats stay healthy and thrive. And in the end, they might just love you for it as much as these kitties love their favorite human.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, French Toast was lying on the ground looking sadly out of her kennel after another day of going unnoticed.

"French Toast got passed by all morning listening to people tell the other pups how cute they are while hoping someone would tell her the same," the on-screen text shared.

Since French Toast didn't receive any interest, a staff member decided to get her dolled up and take her on an excursion to the mall. The pretty pooch donned a dazzling gown and some pearls to accessorize the ensemble.

Despite the massive attention, there were no adoption inquiries so French Toast headed back to the shelter, where once again, she waits. French Toast has so much to offer and would make a wonderful addition to any loving family.

I have two orange boys, Meatball and Tarkus, so I can confidently say orange cats seem to operate on an entirely different frequency than the rest of the feline population. Whether or not they actually share a single brain cell, as the internet loves to joke, they certainly have a talent for doing things that make you stop mid-sentence and ask, "Why?"

The 'Golden Window': Exactly When Vets Say It's Safe to Walk

The "golden window" for walking your dog during August heat falls during the earliest parts of the day or the later parts of the evening. "Timing is everything," says Dr. Jennifer Bruns, a veterinarian at PetSmart Veterinary Services. "Temperatures above 80 to 85 degrees are generally too hot for most dogs to walk safely. Instead, walk your dog during the coolest parts of the day–early morning or late evening."

Dr. Karen "Doc" Halligan, a practicing veterinarian and surgeon, agrees. "The safest time to walk your dog during extreme summer heat is early in the morning, ideally before 8:00 a.m. This is when air temperatures, humidity and pavement temperatures are usually at their lowest," she says. "If a morning walk isn’t possible, wait until after the sun has set, when sidewalks and asphalt have had time to cool."

Why the Air Temperature Is Lying to You

While the air temperature definitely matters, there are a few other factors to keep in mind before hitting the pavement with your pup, including the temperature of the pavement, humidity levels, the ultraviolet (UV) index and your pup's specific traits.

1. Pavement temperature

First, you need to remember the pavement's temperature is always going to be hotter than it feels outdoors. "Sidewalks and pavement are always hotter than the air temperature," Dr. Bruns says. "If you cannot hold your hand on the surface of the ground for at least five seconds comfortably, your dog will need to wear protective booties for added paw protection or wait to go for a walk until it has cooled down."

2. Humidity

Humidity is another important factor to keep in mind. In fact, Dr. Halligan says it is actually one of the most important considerations. "Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting, and high humidity makes panting much less effective, increasing the risk of overheating," Dr. Halligan warns.

3. UV index

The UV index is also important to keep in mind when it comes to deciding if it's an appropriate time to walk your dog. "Strong sun adds radiant heat and increases the risk of overheating," Dr. Halligan says.

4. Your dog's overall health and traits

Finally, keeping your dog's health and traits top of mind can help you discern whether you should hit the pavement or stay inside. Dr. Halligan recommends considering your dog's age, weight, fitness level and overall health in general, as well as whether your dog is acclimated to hot weather, before heading outside.

Certain breeds of dogs may be more at risk than others for overheating during summertime walks. "Breeds like bulldogs and pugs have narrowed airways that make panting less effective, so they overheat much faster and are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses," Dr. Bruns says.

Other short-nosed dog breeds include Boston terriers, boxers, shih-tzus and Pekingese. Giant breeds may also overheat faster, as may thick-coated breeds like huskies.

Age, health concerns and activity levels also play a role. For example, senior dogs, puppies, overweight dogs, dogs with heart or respiratory disease, and dogs that are overexcited or exercise intensely may also be at risk.

"For these high-risk dogs, keep them indoors during peak heat hours, avoid strenuous activity and consider cooling products like vests for outdoor time," Dr. Bruns says. "Monitor them closely for any signs of distress, and if you notice heavy panting, lethargy or difficulty breathing, contact your veterinarian immediately. Your vet can discuss breed-specific heat safety plans tailored to your dog's needs."

3 Vet-Approved Ways to Tire Out Your Dog When It's Simply Too Hot

1. Indoor fetch and play

Just moving things indoors and playing inside is great exercise for your dog. "Use a long hallway or open space for short bursts of retrieving," Dr. Halligan suggests.

2. Mental enrichment

This can include puzzle toys, snuffle mats, treat-dispensing toys or short training sessions. "Mental work can tire a dog as effectively as physical exercise. Hide treats or favorite toys around the house, and encourage your dog to find them," Dr. Halligan recommends.

Dr. Bruns agrees, adding that frozen treats are another great interactive option for dogs. "If you are staying indoors, frozen treats or doggy ice cream provide both relief and hydration, giving them something enriching to focus on while staying safely out of the heat," Dr. Bruns says.

3. Water play

Finally, water play is a great outdoor activity that helps your dog stay cool while staying active. "For the backyard, outdoor wading pools, sprinklers and splash pads are great ways to keep your dog cool while also letting them have some fun," Dr. Bruns says.

Heatstroke is a medial emergency, and it needs immediate attention to resolve. "Early signs of heatstroke are frequently overlooked, which is dangerous because catching them early can be lifesaving," Dr. Bruns says.

She says five urgent signs to watch for include:

• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Excessive drooling
• Heavier and quicker panting (especially if it doesn't improve after moving them to a cool area)
• Restlessness
• Disorientation or weakness

The symptoms being displayed will dictate how you act. "If you notice early signs like drooling, restlessness or heavy panting, move your dog to a cooler environment immediately," Dr. Bruns recommends. "However, if your dog shows disorientation, weakness, vomiting or diarrhea, treat it as a medical emergency. These symptoms indicate heatstroke has progressed significantly, and you need to seek emergency veterinary care right away because complications can be fatal and may not appear until hours or days later."
