Two Tiny Maine Coon Kittens Curl Up Into a Perfect Yin Yang for Their Nap

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 9:41am

When taking a nap, it's easy to find yourself curled up in a ball fast asleep. At least, that's where two adorable kittens found themselves recently.

Two tiny Maine Coon kittens are taking a nap in a precious video on TikTok. In the clip, the two bear a striking resemblance to a Yin Yang, and people can't get enough of them.

♬ Ladyfingers - piano version - Harry Nicholson

Awww, they are so cute! During nap time, these kittens were laying opposite ways. Their heads create the circular part of the Yin Yang design, while their tails trail off to resemble the thin part. These kittens compliment each other well!

Maine Coons are a popular breed of cat due to their lion-like features and friendly personality. These cats are social with a dog-like demeanor while maintaining their playful and curious nature of a typical cat.

These cats also grow to be quite large—males weigh 13 to 25 pounds, while females weigh 10 to 14 pounds. In addition to their size, they sport a thick and long double coat that keeps them warm in the winter and massive paws to act as snow shoes in the northern climates they originate from.

These kittens are going to become quite the companions!

How Much Do Newborn Maine Coon Kittens Sleep?

These two kittens are fast asleep because Maine Coon kittens sleep a lot. On average, newborn kittens sleep 20-22 hours per day and spend 90% of their time asleep during the first few weeks of their lives.

Getting plenty of sleep is important for a newborn kitten. Sleep is what drives rapid physical growth, brain development, and immune system strengthening. The growth hormones necessary for their massive size are primarily released while they sleep, and rest is what strengthens the muscles and bones. In fact, sleep even helps reset and recharge their immune system, keeping the kittens happy and healthy.

Rarely do cat parents think that their felines are not sleeping enough. However, if you do, it would be wise to seek out veterinary care, as certain seizure and sleep disorders can keep a kitten from getting the sleep they need to grow and thrive.

We hope these two Maine Coon kittens continue to get all the sleep they need to grow up big and strong!

♬ original sound - Majestic Coons What To Know About Raising a Litter of Maine Coons

Raising a litter of Maine Coon kittens takes a bit of preparation due to how quickly they grow. From birth to around 2 weeks old, they're dependent on Mom but will double their birth weight by the end of the first week. During the 3- to 4-week mark, the kittens will open their eyes and wobble their way into your heart (and into a litter box!).

Portrait of a Maine Coon cat wearing a lion costume.

Weaning starts between 5 and 7 weeks old when the kittens are ready to transition to solid food, and once they reach 8 to 12 weeks old, the cats can be vaccinated, they're social with feline peers, and they're fully mobile (so keep an eye on these curious cuties!).

All kittens are on their own timeline, but a typical Maine Coon mom might have five babies or more, and they all require:

  • A large breed-specific, high-protein diet to help their rapidly growing muscles
  • Regular and consistent grooming (two to three times per week) to prevent matting in their dense, double coats
  • Vet screenings to watch for breed-specific conditions like hip dysplasia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Maine Coons are stellar companions and well worth the time and effort it takes to care for them. They may look like a fluffy herd of "lion cubs" on the outside, but inside they're really just giant, mushy teddy bears!

The EveryYay Collapsible Pet Stroller is just $128, and it has a 4.4 out of 5 star rating on Petco's website. While this pet stroller is listed as a "dog stroller" and made "for dogs up to 30 pounds" on Petco's website, numerous reviewers say their cats love it as well!

The stroller features large mesh panels to help your cat (or dog) stay well ventilated, a drink caddy that holds two beverages for you, rear-wheel brakes for security, and additional undercarriage storage for accessories. And it has a portable design that collapses easily when you're done, making it easy to store (or take in your car!)

Black Maine Coon Kitten's Striking Red Eyes Are Stopping People in Their Tracks

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 8:31am

Maine Coon kittens are some of the fluffiest, adorable baby cats around no matter what coat or eye color they have. But then, there are some who will simply take your breath away as soon as you see them.

Nameko the Maine Coon kitten in the video below absolutely falls into that category. Not only is he beautiful with his midnight black coat and the tall lynx tips already at the tops of his little ears, but his eyes are red and so mesmerizing.

@mossycottagemainecoons

Mossy Cottage Nameko 🍄 Well… I have a confession. 😅 Now listen… I’m usually GOOD at sexing kittens. 😂 In fact, Nameko was the first kitten in a long time that genuinely had me stumped at birth. I even sent photos of her ‘bits n’ bobbles’ to several breeder friends right after birth, and most of them agreed she looked female. Then our vet confirmed female at the first visit… so that settled it. Naturally, we’ve spent the last few weeks talking about “her” future and how spoiled of a little princess she was going to be. Fast forward to the other day’s appointment… I’m happily telling my vet how excited I am for her new family, completely fawning over this kitten, when I glance up and my vet is just… staring at me petrified. 🫪 I trail off and go quiet… we’re both staring at each other for a second before I manage to get out an awkward “…What?” 🫠 Cue at least 30 seconds of the most awkward eye contact, and she goes… “Well… she has testicles.” 🥜 So, allow us to reintroduce HIM… Mr. Nameko. 😂🖤 Fortunately, his future mom isn’t one to discriminate. Regardless of what he identifies as this week, he’s still going home next week and will be equally as spoiled. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 #mainecoonkitten #mossycottagemainecoons #blackcatsoftiktok #vampirekitten #mainecoonlife

♬ original sound - xiv.

Mossy Cottage Maine Coons on TikTok showed off this very handsome boy in a video that has everyone falling in love. The spooky aesthetic is real with this sweet baby. When you imagine a Halloween cat, he is exactly what most people think of.

Add in his solemn facial expression, and Nameko might just have a career in cat modeling when he grows up.

It's no surprise that someone has already snatched this kitty up and he'll be headed to his forever home soon. He's gorgeous!

What Determines a Kitten's Eye Color?

The way two cats' genetics comes together to create a kitten is always so fascinating, especially since some kittens can truly look so different from their mom and the other babies in the litter.

All kittens start out with blue eyes, and some will have them darken into a beautiful shade of the same color, while others will change. According to Catster, this is because they haven't produced enough melanin yet for their irises to show their true color, but you should expect to see what color your cat's eyes will be around the time they're about seven weeks old.

The Sacramento Bee notes that your cat's eye color is connected to their coat color; solid or mostly white cats will have blue, green, gold, or copper eyes, while most black cats will have yellow or gold eyes.

A Black Maine coon cat with amber eyes

Anita Kot / Getty Images

Dark eyes that appear red like Nameko's do are rare, since they require a lot more melanin to produce that striking color. However, it is more likely to happen in certain breeds including Maine Coons, so all the right factors were definitely on his side.

Now that he's off to his forever home, I hope Nameko's new parents are ready for spooky season. It's almost fall, and with that face, there's no doubt this little guy is going to be the star of the show.

This Big Orange Rescue Cat Has the Most Unexpected Little Voice

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 8:05am

There are certain things I expect from a very large orange cat. Stealing food? Absolutely. Sitting somewhere he clearly doesn't fit? Of course. Making a series of questionable decisions and then looking at me like I'm the problem? That's basically in the job description.

What I would not expect is for an enormous orange rescue cat to open his mouth and produce a tiny, raspy little noise that sounds like he's been smoking two packs a day and playing piano in a dive bar since 1978. But that's exactly what Orange does, and I could listen to him "talk" all day.

@christi282828

Meet Big Orange

♬ Reflection on Peace - Adauto Assis

The wonderfully strange little voice belongs to Orange, whose story was shared by TikTok user @christi282828, and once you hear this handsome rescue boy trying to make himself heard, you're going to understand why the internet has collectively fallen in love with him.

Orange sits on the stairs and repeatedly attempts to meow, except almost no traditional cat sound comes out.

Instead, we get a wonderfully scratchy little croak.

It's less "meow" and more "Ma'am, can I get another black coffee?"

And apparently Orange has plenty to say.

Related: This Orange Mama Cat Had Seven Orange Babies, and Every One Has Typical Orange Cat Energy

According to the video's caption, he was rescued from outside last winter by his cat parent's family after being found with a shattered paw. At the time, they weren't even sure he'd be able to climb stairs again.

Look at him now!

His vocal cords have also been examined by a veterinarian, according to the caption, and nothing appears to be wrong. Orange simply doesn't have a conventional meow. That hasn't stopped him from being extremely vocal, though. He announces his presence and his feelings and demands attention entirely on his own terms.

Basically, Orange has a lot of opinions. He just delivers them in a voice that sounds like he should be narrating a Western.

The comments are incredible. @christi282828

Orange from another angle

♬ TRANQUILIDADE - Calmaria

"'He doesn't want to be petted. He just wants people to know where he is and that he has feelings.' … He is me. This is me."

"My senior kitty sounds like this! I'm not sure what happened to his meow over the years."

"He kinda sounds like those Glade mister air fresheners."

And then came my favorite: "He has a wonderful deep raspy voice. He's the feline Sam Elliott!"

YES.

Another viewer summed up how everyone seems to feel about this sweet boy: "That's it. We're all Orange's family now. He done stole all our hearts."

I guess we have a new relative.

Welcome to the family, Orange. Please keep us updated on where you are and how you feel at all times.

Grey Maine Coon Gives Birth to a Litter of Baby Dust Bunnies

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 8:00am

Even the most basic cats have the cutest kittens. Every single kitten is unique, and when you put their whole litter together, they always end up fitting together so perfectly!

Recently, one grey Maine Coon had a litter of kittens, and they're so perfect. Both her and the father of the litter are big grey cats, so each of their kittens looks just like a tiny dust bunny:

@tasselears

More Gummies) literally! Gummy’s daughter is great like mom in everything #mainecoon #meow #kittens #cuteanimals #mainecoonkitten

♬ оригинальный звук - Tassel Ears Maine Coon Cattery

Tassel Ears Maine Coon Cattery has so many cats, but the dust bunnies are definitely some of the cutest. This litter is special for the cattery too: the mama cat is actually the daughter of another cat there! She's officially a grandma, and she's taking those duties very seriously.

There are 5 kittens in the litter, and they're all pretty dusty-looking, though a few of them have a little bit lighter fur. If you know anything about dust, though, you know that it's pretty accurate! They're amazing and will have the best time over the next few months.

Related: Grey Maine Coon’s Litter of Perfect ‘Grilled Cheese’ Kittens Can’t Get Cuter

A lot of the cats in this cattery are dust bunnies, actually! When they posted a video of all of them trying to make it through this heat wave together, it was like when you sweep under your couch for the first time in six months:

@tasselears

It seems the fluffies aren't too bothered by the heat. #mainecoon #catsoftiktok #kittens #mainecoonkitten #petlover

♬ JARKOR - Pedrillex

Surprisingly, the kittens are taking these heat waves super well! They live inside where it's air-conditioned, which definitely helps, but a cat's coat is designed to help keep them cool.

Do Catteries Always Have the Same Cats?

A lot of Tassel Ears' kittens are grey, though some are lighter than others. When you've made the decision to go through a cattery, which a lot of people do for "specialty" breeds like this, it can feel incredibly daunting to find exactly what you're after!

NadiaCruzova / Getty Images

The colors of cats that a cattery has vary from place to place. While a few might specialize in a specific coat color, most catteries try to have cats with all of the most popular coat colors, and they'll often avoid having two litters of the exact same color back-to-back.

Coat color doesn't necessarily impact personality when it comes to the cats themselves, but that won't stop people from wanting certain colors! If you're wondering if a cattery has the coat color you want, you can:

  • Contact them and ask.
  • Look at their website to see if they have the parents all listed.
  • Keep an eye on their social media: many will post upcoming breeding pairs.

It is worth mentioning that you can find tons of cats, including Maine Coons, in shelters! Before going through a cattery, consider shopping around shelters near you: they might have exactly who you want, and it might not be as expensive, either! Pretty kitties cost some pretty pennies!

Great Dane Puppy's Precious Floppy Ears Make Her Look Just Like 'Dobby' the Elf

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 7:10am

Great Danes are known for their massive size and mushy personality. These gentle giants are a favorite of pet parents due to their head-turning physique and ultra-sweet demeanor. Outside of their sheer bulk, this breed's notable features include huge paws, pronounced skulls, and very expressive eyes.

Yet this Great Dane puppy's ears are what will make you do a double take and wonder if you just saw an iconic Harry Potter character.

In the TikTok from @tylersavannahxx, this adorable Great Dane pup was cuddled on the couch with a sweet expression on her face. While her cuteness was completely irresistible, the precious pooch's humongous ears were her most striking quality.

Making the scene even sweeter was how her ears were turned inside out and laying on her fur in all of their glorious floppiness. The look was very reminiscent of a beloved elf in the Harry Potter franchise.

"My little Dobby girl," the caption noted.

Dobby was the courageous yet kind house-elf who went to great lengths to protect Harry Potter. The unlikely hero appeared in the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002, and again in 2010's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Dobby's endearing personality, gentle spirit, and exceptional ears made him a fan favorite.

Followers concurred on the Great Dane's resemblance and raved over the canine cutie's appearance:

  • "Don't tell my dog I said this because I tell her she's the prettiest girl, but your dog is ADORABLE," one confessed.
  • "Oh dear, my heart has melted," another gushed.
  • "This is the cutest thing! Your very own Dobby," a follower remarked.
  • "Awww are you ou secretly hoping she doesn't grow into those ears?" someone asked.
How Big Will a Great Dane Puppy Actually Get?

Thanks to the breed's mammoth size, Great Danes are known as the "Apollo of dogs." These sweet fur babies grow quickly, with their largest growth spurt occurring between 4 and 6 months. A Great Dane is considered fully grown between 18 and 24 months of age.

Male puppies usually weigh between 35 and 45 pounds at 3 months old and stand at approximately 19 to 22 inches tall. Females weigh in at 25 to 30 pounds and measure at approximately 18 to 19 inches.

Related: Great Dane's Tender Determination to Keep Baby Safe on Couch Is Too Sweet

At 6 months old, males tip the scales at 70 to 85 pounds and reach 26 to 28 inches in height. Females come in at 60 to 70 pounds and about 24 to 26 inches.

When these pups turn a year old, males usually weigh between 120 and 140 pounds and are 32 to 33 inches tall. Females are a little less, coming in at 110 to 120 pounds and 31 to 32 inches.

A male Great Dane is a hefty 140 to 175 pounds at adulthood and stands at 33 to 36 inches. Females are an impressive 120 to 140 pounds and 32 to 33 inches tall.

In other words, your Great Dane will grow to an immense height and weight, though ear sizes may vary.

Vets Swear by These 7 Easy Ways to Freshen Your Dog's Breath at Home

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 5:18am

It's no surprise that a dog's breath can definitely be stinky at times. Any pup parent or dog lover understands this all too well. However, if you are looking for ways to freshen up your doggie’s bad breath, the best method of action is to understand the underlying cause and to treat it accordingly.

"If you're looking for fresher breath, the goal shouldn't be to hide the odor," says Dr. Jo Myers, a veterinarian with more than 30 years of clinical experience and a veterinary consultant at Vetster, an on-demand telehealth platform for pet owners. "It should be to identify and treat the reason it's there in the first place."

That said, there are a number of basic tenets of good canine dental hygiene that can help keep your dog’s breath smelling better (and help keep your veterinary bills lower in the process).

From establishing a regular teeth-brushing program for your doggie to keeping their water bowl clean, here are seven vet-approved strategies to help freshen your dog's breath at home. Plus, learn the potential causes of bad breath in dogs and when you should be concerned about smelly dog breath as a medical emergency and should contact your veterinarian ASAP.

Why Does My Dog's Breath Smell So Bad? The Root Cause

Cris Cantón / Getty Images

These three issues may be behind why your dog's breath smells so bad.

1. Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is by far the most common cause, Dr. Myers says. "As plaque and tartar build up, bacteria multiply around and beneath the gums, producing the characteristic foul odor. It also leads to inflammation, infection and progressive damage to the tissues supporting the teeth," she says.

2. Debris

"If something is trapped in the mouth, like a stick, bone fragment, piece of rawhide, hair, or other debris caught between the teeth or under the gums, it can quickly become infected and cause a sudden change in breath odor," Dr. Myers says.

3. Disease

"Less commonly, diseases such as kidney disease, diabetes or certain oral tumors can change the odor of a dog's breath," Dr. Myers says. "An underlying condition is one reason persistent bad breath should never be dismissed as simply 'dog breath,' especially if it’s a change from what you’re used to."

When it comes to home remedies for freshening your dog's breath, Dr. Myers does not recommend the ones you may commonly find on the internet. "Owners often ask me about home remedies they find online, such as parsley, coconut oil, baking soda, apple cider vinegar, carrots or other crunchy vegetables," Dr. Myers says. "While most of these are unlikely to meaningfully improve persistent bad breath, none have good evidence that they treat periodontal disease, which is by far the most common cause."

Moreover, some of these "remedies" may potentially lead to others problems for your pup. "Some, like baking soda or apple cider vinegar, may even cause stomach upset or other problems if used inappropriately," Dr. Myers warns. "I don't recommend relying on these remedies because they can give owners a false sense that they're treating the problem when they're really just trying to cover up a symptom."

Ultimately, keeping your dog's breath smelling fresher is about maintenance, cleaning and routine vet visits. Below are seven strategies for keeping up with your dog's dental hygiene, which will improve the smell of their breath. Like Dr. Myers says, it's about addressing the cause, not just covering up the symptom.

1. Start a regular teeth-brushing routine.

Su Arslanoglu / Getty Images

First and foremost, starting a regular teeth-brushing routine with your dog really is the most effective way to keep bad breath and canine dental and periodontal disease at bay. Just make sure to use a dog-safe toothpaste!

2. Examine their mouth.

Tatsiana Volkava / Getty Images

"Lift your dog's lips occasionally to look for tartar, red gums, broken teeth or anything unusual," Dr. Myers recommends. This way, you can spot any issues before they progress and make a vet appointment to fix the problem at its cause, ultimately fixing the bad breath.

3. Remove debris and anything stuck in their teeth.

Ekaterina savyolova / Getty Images

"Remove fragments of sticks, hair or other debris if it's loose and easy to safely remove," Dr. Myers says. This can help remedy the bad breath situation.

4. Keep your dog's water bowl clean.

Iulduz Khairullina / Getty Images

Simply keeping your dog's water fresh and clean can make a big difference in your dog's dental hygiene, and therefore the smell of their breath. Do your best to clean your pup's water bowl daily with hot water and basic dish soap. Change out water regularly as well, especially if you see rogue kibble floating in it or other scraps! Yuck!

5. Focus on a balanced diet.

Oscar Wong / Getty Images

Dr. Myers also recommends focusing on your dog's food. Feeding them a balanced diet (and avoiding excessive table scraps) is important for your dog's health and can lead to better-smelling breath.

6. Schedule your vet visits on time.

urbazon / Getty Images

Keeping up with your dog's veterinary appointments is key. Make sure to schedule regular vet examinations so any dental disease is caught early and can be treated accordingly.

7. Call your vet.

Tatiana Maksimova / Getty Images

"Seek veterinary advice if bad breath persists instead of assuming it's normal," Dr. Myers says. Your vet can advise whether or not you should bring your pup in or if there's anything else you can do at home to help diminish stinky dog breath.

3 Human Products That Are Toxic to Dogs

You'll want to make sure you keep these human products geared toward fresher breath and healthier teeth away from your pup—they're extremely toxic to dogs and aren't designed for our canine companions to use.

1. Sugar-free chewing gum or mints

Sugar-free chewing gum or mints may contain xylitol, which may cause life-threatening low blood sugar and liver injury in dogs, Dr. Myers says.

2. Mouthwash

Mouthwash may give us humans fresher breath, but depending on the product, it may contain alcohol, xylitol or other ingredients that can be harmful if swallowed by dogs, Dr. Myers says.

3. Breath sprays or dissolving breath strips

Similarly, breath sprays or dissolving breath strips may contain xylitol, alcohol, concentrated essential oils or other ingredients that haven't been shown to be safe for dogs, Dr. Myers says.

When Is Bad Dog Breath a Sign of a Medical Emergency?

"Bad breath by itself is rarely an emergency, but it can be a clue that something serious is happening," Dr. Myers says. "I recommend immediate veterinary attention if bad breath is accompanied by facial swelling, significant bleeding from the mouth, severe pain, inability to eat or close the mouth, trauma, or if your dog suddenly becomes lethargic, vomits repeatedly, or seems generally ill."

7 Companion Dog Breeds That Are Perfect for Empty Nesters Looking for a Best Friend

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 5:10am

For years, your days revolved around school drop-offs, sports, family dinners and a house full of activity. Then suddenly, the kids leave for college or move into homes of their own, and the silence can feel surprisingly loud. When that happens, you may wonder, "What are the best dogs for those people starting a fresh chapter?" Luckily, there are tons of amazing loyal pups out there that you can adopt from shelters that can help you fill that emptiness you're feeling. In fact, we rounded up 7 companion dog breeds that are perfect for empty nesters looking for a new best friend, according to experts.

After all, while a dog isn’t intended to replace your children, they can ease the transition and allow you to experience the joys of being a pet parent. “Becoming an empty nester is an interesting life stage,” says Dr. Carly Fox, senior veterinarian at Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. “You have infinite freedom to focus on hobbies, travel and relationships. It can also come with a sense of loss and need for more purpose. Adding a dog to your family can help fill this void by providing daily routine and companionship.”

Whether you're looking for an adventurous dog to join you on weekend hikes, a cuddly lap dog to curl up with while you watch your favorite shows or a social pup that'll get you out meeting new people, experts say these loving dog breeds offer the kind of connection and bond many empty nesters are looking for. Check out what they say are the best dogs for adults with grown children and see which one you want to add to your family.

7 Best Dog Breeds for Empty Nesters

“Empty nesters should choose for the life they actually live now, not the life they had when the kids were younger,” says veterinarian Dr. Sarah Wooten. “A dog can bring joy, structure and companionship back into the home, but the best match is one whose exercise needs, grooming, health risks, size and temperament fit the owner’s daily routine.”

Poodle A Poodle is a loyal companion dog that thrives on human companionship.

If you're ready to take on new adventures now that your schedule has opened up, a Poodle makes an excellent partner.

These pretty dogs are highly intelligent and love learning, exploring and spending time with their favorite people. They're just as happy joining you for long walks as they are mastering a new trick in the backyard.

“One of my favorite patients is a standard Poodle who is owned by empty nesters,” Fox says. “These dogs are active, loyal companions who love to be with their owners and participate in the day-to-day of the home.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Intelligent, active, friendly
  • Height: Below 10 to over 15 inches
  • Weight: 4–70 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10–18 years
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel The perfect four-legged friend for a new chapter in life.

For adults who miss having someone close by throughout the day, few breeds compare to the affectionate Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

These gentle pups enjoy tagging along wherever life takes you. Their loving nature can make a home feel warm and full again. Plus, since they are small dogs, you can carry them around or even bring them on errands with you.

“They’re typically sweet, people-oriented and happy to cuddle, but still enjoy walks and outings,” shares Wooten. “They can be a lovely fit for someone who misses having nurturing energy in the home and wants a gentle companion nearby.”

Breed Stats

  • Personality: Loving, social, patient
  • Height: 12–13 inches
  • Weight: 13–18 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12–15 years
Labrador Retriever A Lab makes an excellent pet for adults seeking a devoted sidekick.

If family adventures were once the highlight of your weekends, a Labrador Retriever can help keep that active lifestyle going.

Labs love having a job to do, whether that's joining you on hikes or swimming at the lake. Their enthusiasm is contagious and often encourages owners to stay mobile.

“These dogs are active and enthusiastic, keeping the empty nesters on their toes,” Fox notes. “They love routine, activity and mental stimulation, which helps their owners get out of the house and engage.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Active, friendly, outgoing
  • Height: 21.5-24.5 inches
  • Weight: 55-80 pounds
  • Lifespan: 11–13 years
Havanese An affectionate breed that quickly becomes part of the family.

Getty Images Hans Surfer

A smaller home doesn't have to mean less personality. Havanese are cheerful little sidecicks that are determined to brighten every room they enter. Their silly antics and love of human interaction can help replace some of the energy that disappears when kids move out.

“They can be great for empty nesters who want a small dog with personality, affection and enough playfulness to make the house feel lively again,” Wooten says. “Their grooming needs are real, but their size and adaptable nature can make them very manageable.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Intelligent, outgoing, funny
  • Height: 8.5-11.5 inches
  • Weight: 7-13 pounds
  • Lifespan: 14-16 years
Shih Tzu A Shih Tzu is a loyal dog that's a great match for empty nesters.

Getty Images Anita Kot

If your idea of the perfect evening involves a cozy blanket and binging Netflix, the Shih Tzu may be the perfect match for these.

Instead of demanding constant activity, these affectionate little dogs are content simply being near the people they love. They easily settle into quiet routines and offer comforting friendship during slow days at home.

“They usually don’t need intense exercise, and many are happiest being near their people,” Wooten explains. “Owners should be mindful of grooming needs and heat sensitivity because they are a brachycephalic breed.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Sassy, gentle, devoted
  • Height: 9–10.5 inches
  • Weight: 9–16 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10–18 years

For empty nesters seeking balance between activity and relaxation, Cocker Spaniels often check every box as they are thought of as calm, low-maintenance dogs for empty nesters.

One day, they might join you on a long walk through the neighborhood. The next day, they’ll be just as happy curling up beside you on the couch. It’s this versatile, affectionate personality that helps make everyday moments feel just a little brighter, especially after the house has grown quieter.

“They often enjoy walks, play and cuddling, so they can fit a household that wants both companionship and moderate activity,” Wooten says. “Their ears and coat require regular care, but their sweet temperament can be very rewarding.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Smart, gentle, happy
  • Height: 13.5-15.5 inches
  • Weight: 20-30 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10-14 years
Greyhound A relaxed dog breed with a sweet, affectionate personality.

Many people assume Greyhounds need endless exercise, but retired racing Greyhounds are often surprisingly low-key dogs, which make them great options for older adults who wants to add a pet to ther home.

They enjoy leisurely walks before stretching out for long naps, making them an excellent choice for empty nesters who appreciate peaceful evenings but still want a larger dog by their side.

“A retired racing Greyhound may be a great fit for empty nesters who want a graceful companion rather than a high-intensity exercise partner,” Wooten says. “They need safe leash handling and soft places to rest, but many are affectionate, peaceful housemates.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Calm, sweet, quiet
  • Height: 27–30 inches
  • Weight: 60–70 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10–13 years

French Bulldog in Louis Vuitton Orders His Own Lunch—'I'll Have the Grilled Chicken'

Thu, 08/06/2026 - 4:31am

Somewhere, a maître d' is very confused. Blue the French Bulldog at the table. He's wearing his best Louis Vuitton. And he's ordering the grilled chicken.

The video from @bluescomebackcaptures Blue's weekly tradition. "After every weekly rehab session, Blue and Auntie Sue have their little lunch date tradition 🥹💙 Good food, plenty of kisses, and one very spoiled gentleman who insists on ordering for himself 😂🍗💕," the caption explains. The text overlay does the talking for him: "I'll have the grilled chicken? Shall I get the check?" And "Just the Two of Us" plays in the background, because of course it does.

Blue's seated at the table in his Louis Vuitton harness, looking every bit the regular little gentleman he's become.

@bluescomeback

After every weekly rehab session, Blue and Auntie Sue have their little lunch date tradition 🥹💙 Good food, plenty of kisses, and one very spoiled gentleman who insists on ordering for himself 😂🍗💕 #frenchbulldog #ivddrecovery #dogsoftiktok #lunchdate #frenchiesoftiktok

♬ Just the Two of Us - Grover Washington, Jr.

This isn't just a bit for the camera, though. Blue's recovering from IVDD, Intervertebral Disc Disease, a spinal condition where one of the cushioning discs between his vertebrae slips or ruptures and puts pressure on his spinal cord. Depending on how intense it gets, that can mean pain, weakness, wobbly back legs, or trouble walking at all. His weekly rehab sessions are part of his treatment, and the lunch date afterward is his reward. This small, steady tradition that turns something physically difficult and painful into something that he actually looks forward to. Auntie Sue built this whole ritual around his recovery, and it’s special to say the least.

The comments were full of warmth for both of them:

Related: Frenchie Ignores His Human Completely—Until Someone Opens a Snack Wrapper

"What a distinguished gentleman"

"Louis Vuitton and a seat in a restaurant. Frenchies deserve this and sooo much more. precious pigs of joy"

"You just can't say noo to these eyes🥺🥺 💙💙💙 😁 let's go Blue and Aunt Sue!"

"We took our Frenchie to a Key West vacation, and mostly all restaurants were pet friendly. I loved that she could sit with us in the same booth, table height, all had a pup menu and gave us water bowls and things for her, it was awesome!!"

Blue's lunch dates are about more than good chicken, though. There's a real reason routines like this actually help.

How Positive Routines Help Dogs Recover From IVDD

According to Walkin' Pets, recovery from IVDD takes time, especially with more serious cases. Some dogs might need weeks of rest, medication, and rehab work like gentle exercises, hydrotherapy, or stretching to restore strength and coordination to where they need to be. It's slow. Staying consistent is really what makes the difference.

That's exactly where something like Blue's lunch date fits in perfectly. Once a vet gives the okay, encouraging gentle, positive movement helps a dog stay engaged and comfortable while they are healing. A weekly reward a dog actually looks forward to makes the whole process feel a lot less like something to get through and more like something worth looking forward to. That matters just as much for a dog's mood as physical work does.

If treats are part of the reward, plain and boneless is the way to go, and only in moderation. A dog recovering from a spinal issue doesn't need anything extra that could upset their stomach or add weight while their body's trying to heal itself.

Even something low-key like a simple lunch outing with Auntie Sue is worth keeping an eye on. Overdoing it, even when it's fun, can slow recovery down and cause setbacks. Walkin' Pets recommends watching for the small signs a dog's had enough: reluctance to keep moving, wobbliness, general discomfort, and steering clear of stairs, jumping, or slippery floors whenever possible.

Blue ordered his chicken. Auntie Sue's got the check. Recovery never looked this good.

Known for being big, fluffy, and supremely friendly, Ragdolls are extremely popular and beloved for many reasons. Named for the way they go limp when picked up, Ragdolls are funny and have plenty of quirks that make them a great addition to any family.

Some Fun Facts about Ragdoll Kittens:

  • All Ragdolls are born completely white, and their colorings start to come in around eight to twelve weeks of age
  • Ragdolls grow much slower than other cats, reaching full maturity and size at about four years of age
  • They are so laid back and easygoing that it can be dangerous, so they're best suited for indoor living
  • Ragdolls are known for being "dog-like" and can even be taught to play fetch
  • They grow very attached to their humans and will even follow them from room to room and greet them at the door

Types of British Longhairs A British Longhair cat lays on the floor in a cute pose.

Image via Shutterstock/J. P. B

One of the oldest breeds of cat, British Longhairs originated from cats that came with Egyptians who invaded Great Britain with the Romans. Eventually crossed with Persian Cats circa 1914, the longhaired version was born.

Like their shorthair counterparts, British Longhairs don't have subbreeds, but they are classified by coat and color. The types of colorways are:

  • Solid: Entirely one color with no individualized markings.
  • Bi-Color: White/cream mixed with patches of another solid color, tabby, or tortoiseshell pattern.
  • Tortoiseshell: A mix of black, tan, white, and/or red, which are closely blended together.
  • Tabby: Mackrel or spotted and speckled patterns with agouti banding and 'M' markings on the cat's forehead.
  • Shaded: Very dramatic coats with pigmentation only visible on the tips of the hair follicles.
  • Colorpoint: A pale colored body with darker pigment on the face, ears, legs, feet, and/or tail, which is inherited from Persian crossbreeding.

The cats can be various shades within these patterns. Regardless of what colorway, British Longhairs are clearly gorgeous cats, and it's no surprise why people love them so much on TikTok and beyond.

Black-and-White Cat’s Unique Facial Markings Make Him Look Exactly Like a Goat

Wed, 08/05/2026 - 7:55pm

It's always a little odd when an animal resembles another animal, but you've never seen anything quite like this with a cat.

The unique black-and-white cat's markings on his face are on a whole other level, and viewers can't believe how much he resembles a certain other animal.

The caption on the video points out the obvious about the black-and-white cat's markings: their placement makes him look quite a bit like a goat.

Viewers just couldn't get enough of this cute kitty and had plenty to say about it.

"They got so many nose kisses it rubbed off," said one person.

One even came up with a great name for this black-and-white cat. "Snownose, Batear Foxnose, Frostear, Badgerclaw, Darksnow... these are all the warrior names I can think of for this baby," the commenter said.

Another wrote, "He dipped the tip of his ears and nose in winter's side."

Many of the commenters also shared photos of their own cats with unique markings.

Why Do Some Cats Have Unique Facial Markings?

So how did this cute cat get such unique goat-like facial markings?

Like all coat patterns and pigments, facial markings on cats are due to genetics.

The Agouti gene is one of the main genes involved in determining a cat's coloring, according to Cat-Breeds.com.

This gene is responsible for a kitty having stripes, swirls, spots, and other markings.

If the Agouti gene is inactive, the cat's coat will come out solid.

One of the commenters on the video said that the black-and-white cat markings for this feline look like a pattern seen on cats called Karpati, which is seen more commonly with Eastern European cats.

The Karpati cat gets its name because it lives near the Carpathian Mountains, which span Hungary, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, according to jspecies.com.

A Karpati pattern happens because of a dominant gene that's distinctly different from more common coat patterns such as Tabby and Tortoiseshell.

However, a Karpati cat can have the Karpati pattern along with one of these more common coat patterns, which is why these kitties can have such unique face markings.

4 Parrots on a Road Trip Have Parents Wondering Who’s Asking, ‘Are We There Yet?'

Wed, 08/05/2026 - 6:15pm

If you've ever taken a road trip with your dog or cat, you know it takes a little planning. Traveling with four Parrots? That's a whole different level of preparation.

For Wendy Albright (@theparrotlady), every road trip includes four feathered passengers, each with a designated seat based on their own personality. After seeing the setup, plenty of viewers couldn't help but wonder which one was asking, "Are we there yet?"

Check out the well-planned ride in this July 28 TikTok:

@theparrotlady

Have parrots, will travel 🤩 When you have animals and travel extensively, you either hire someone to take care of them or you bring them along. They all seem to enjoy it and I believe it’s much better than leaving them to sit in cages while I’m gone 🤩 #parrots #roadtrip #adventure

♬ un homme et une femme - 🎀

Like any family road trip, every passenger has their own quirks. Albright explains that Sweet Pea and Ruby ride up front because they occasionally get carsick. She later shared in the comments that it looks much like it does in people or dogs, and the first time it happened, she thought something was seriously wrong. According to Bird Tricks, motion sickness varies from Parrot to Parrot. While some birds tolerate long car rides without issue, others need some help adjusting. The avian care experts recommend starting with short 15-minute practice drives before attempting longer road trips so you can see how your bird responds and help them gradually become more comfortable traveling.

Meanwhile, Brody rides in the back because he'll happily chat for the entire drive, while Thyme prefers a little extra privacy. Part of her carrier is covered to help keep her calm because passing shadows can make her nervous.

Viewers couldn't get enough of the adorable travel crew.

"Does Brody say, 'Are we there yet'?" asked @CyndysSweets.

Albright replied with an even funnier answer: "He usually starts calling the dog when we get close 😂."

Another viewer, @TequilaBird, joked, "Who calls shotgun?"

"I wish I was on this fun road trip. They are all so precious," another commenter wrote.

And if this video left you smiling, here's another recent favorite from Albright featuring Ruby and her striking look-alike friend, Esmeralda:

@theparrotlady

Am I seeing double? Can you tell me which one is Ruby? Yesterday, my friend @Oswald the Too brought her Eclectus, Esmeralda, over for a visit and the two parrots just hit it off 🤩 Do you think we need to schedule another play date?

For many pet parents, simply getting one anxious traveler into the car can be a challenge. Watching four Parrots calmly settle into their assigned seats shows that, with a little planning and an understanding of each bird's personality, road trips can become an adventure everyone can enjoy.

Itty-Bitty Yorkie Converts Her Water Bowl Into a Full-On Water Park: The Patio Is Soaked and She Does Not Care

Wed, 08/05/2026 - 4:05pm

I have seen dogs get excited about water before, but this is less "dog enjoys splashing" and more "tiny woman has been permanently banned from the community pool."

Zoe is an absolutely itty-bitty Yorkshire Terrier who has somehow converted an ordinary water bowl into a full-service backyard water park. By the time she's finished, she's soaking wet, the wooden deck is soaking wet, and I'm pretty sure there are neighboring counties experiencing minor flooding.

The glorious display of complete Yorkie lawlessness was shared by TikTok user @zoe_theyorkie, and the decision to set the entire thing to Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" could not possibly be more appropriate.

Zoe races around the deck before repeatedly attacking her water bowl, splashing, digging and throwing water everywhere with the enthusiasm of someone who just discovered she's tall enough to ride the log flume.

She's soaked.

Related: Mom’s 'Well-Behaved' Yorkie Is Actually a Tiny, Snarling Tasmanian Devil

The patio is soaked.

Presumably, anyone standing within a six-foot radius is soaked.

Zoe does not care.

In fact, Zoe appears to have never cared about anything more in her entire tiny life.

Naturally, people had questions:

  • "What is wrong with that chicken?" one person asked.
  • "She turned her water bowl into a swimming pool."
  • Another viewer offered some practical advice: "That pool is way too small. Needs baby pool asap."
  • "I covered my dog's eyes while I watched this, so she doesn't get any crazy ideas inside the house."
  • "This is why you are not supposed to wet gremlins."
  • "What was in those doggie treats?"
  • And then someone asked the question we're all thinking: "What in the Gizmo is going on? Gotta love a crazy Yorkie."

The Gremlins comparisons are extremely compelling, but I have to side with the person demanding a baby pool.

Zoe has clearly outgrown her current facilities.

Yorkshire Terriers may be tiny, but nobody seems to have informed them. These energetic little dogs are known for being playful, curious, and incredibly confident, and their terrier roots can make them surprisingly bold for their size.

That combination can result in a five-pound dog behaving like she's just been handed the keys to Las Vegas.

Zoe is a perfect example. She doesn't see a water bowl. She sees opportunity. Recreation. A chance to create memories.

And extensive property damage.

Someone please buy this woman a kiddie pool.

Adorable Golden Retriever is a Total Party Foul at Happy Hour

Wed, 08/05/2026 - 3:57pm

As many of us know, there are few people who make a better wingman than a cute puppy can. But if he's too tired to do his job, well, it'll be cute but not super effective.

Saint, a sweet Golden Retriever puppy, was recently filmed committing a party foul out at happy hour. The video was shared to TikTok, and fair warning, it's nothing short of adorable and goofy.

  • "he’s just a little ham SO CUTE"
  • "real footage of me getting sleepy in places"
  • "The smushiest baby"

Here's hoping that Saint gets a naptime before his next happy hour so he'll be more up for the hang!

When To Bring Puppies Out of the Home

As a general rule of thumb, puppies should not be around other animals or outside of a supervised/secure area until they are well over eight weeks of age and fully vaccinated. This is to, of course, protect your new puppy, but also to protect other animals they may encounter out and about.

Up until this fully vaccinated stage, puppies should not be in unfamiliar outdoor areas or around other animals, as they can pick up diseases that can unfortunately be fatal to them. Until it is safe, it's best to keep them at home, and if you must take them out, carry them and keep them off of public outdoor areas.

Once a puppy has full immunity—typically between 18 and 22 weeks—then it's totally safe and encouraged to begin expanding their world. And you definitely should, provided they're not going to fall asleep at the bar, which is cute! But always less than ideal.

Why Dogs Smell Worse in Summer, According to Vets (and the Easy, 3-Minute Fix)

It isn’t just your imagination: your dog does tend to stink a bit more by the time summer rolls around. While it might be easy to think it’s just your canine companion that emits such odor, it’s a universal occurrence that tends to plague most pet parents during this time of year. While the stronger odor might seem too powerful to handle, there’s actually a quick and easy way to fix the stench.

Experts say the summer stink is real, and it's more common than most pet parents realize. Between the heat, the humidity and all that extra time spent outdoors, dogs are practically working overtime to smell this bad. But before you prep your dog for their next grooming appointment, there’s an easier way to freshen them up. The fix isn't complicated, expensive or time-consuming. In fact, it takes about as long as brewing a cup of coffee.

Why Heat Magnifies Dog Odor

It might be easy to blame your dog's odor on the heat alone, but the truth is, it's a mix of different factors all working together.

According to JoAnn Parente, co-founder of Dogs & Cats Rule, the combination of heat and humidity along with natural skin oils, moisture, and odor-causing bacteria or yeast, creates the perfect environment for smell to build up. If your dog is spending more time outside this summer, especially in and out of water, dirt and allergens can get trapped in their coat and intensify with the humidity. Places like the ears, paws, skin folds, and beneath the collar are some of the prime spots where odor tends to settle in and grow over time.

The Easy, 3-Minute Fix (No Full Bath Required)

It might seem like heading to the groomer is the only way to handle your dog's smell once it starts acting up, but there's a much easier fix you can do from the comfort of your home. The best part? No wrestling your dog into the tub is required.

Emily Halaszynski, the director of education for Bernie’s Best, recommends easy daily hygiene as the best way to eliminate and prevent summer odor, rather than overbathing.

“Simple steps like brushing your dog regularly, consistently brushing your dog's teeth, checking paws, wiping down after outdoor adventures and using pet-safe grooming wipes can help maintain skin, coat and overall hygiene without disrupting their natural balance,” she says. “The goal is to support your dog's skin barrier, which is more than something that needs to be cleaned. It's a protective barrier made of skin cells, natural oils, and a living layer of microorganisms that help keep the skin stable and resilient.”

Rather than forcing them to the groomers or in the tub, these daily steps can help keep them fresh, comfortable and smelling great for longer periods of time.

The Overbathing Trap: Why Weekly Showers Actually Make the Smell Worse

While these steps are simple additions to your daily routine, it’s easy to see (or smell) why you may think you should ramp up your dog’s baths instead. Because of the strong odor, it’s easy to assume your canine needs more time in the tub, but this may make things even worse.

Overbathing strips away your dog's natural oils, which Parente says can make their skin even more hospitable to yeast growth. Bathing too often can also leave skin irritated and more prone to infection. That disruption to their natural oil balance can lead to flakiness, irritation and changes in odor.

Dogs only need baths as often as their coat, breed and lifestyle call for. Overdoing it can actually contribute to the smell, kicking off a cycle of discomfort and odor that's hard to break.

When 'Summer Stink' Is Actually a Medical Red Flag

Even with these hygiene steps in place, some dogs may continue to battle that summer stink. That's when it's time to loop in your vet.

If the smell persists no matter what you try, it could point to an underlying medical condition. Halaszynski recommends watching for warning signs like changes in appetite, visible tartar buildup, discomfort while chewing, skin irritation, persistent scratching, redness or odor that returns quickly after cleaning. Any break from your dog's "normal" habits may be a subtle cue that something more is going on.

It's normal for your dog to pick up a bit of a smell after outdoor adventures, but a consistent, powerful odor is never comfortable, for you or your pup. Build a few simple hygiene habits into your routine to help keep them fresh all season long and beyond. No pet parent enjoys a stinky dog, and chances are, your dog isn't thrilled about it either. They're counting on you to help them through it.
