If you have ever wondered how a shelter dog would review a chicken nugget, Michigan Animal Rescue League in Pontiac, Mich., has apparently decided to answer the question.

The shelter has developed several creative ways to introduce its dogs to the world. A few months ago, it shared a video talking about some rare dog breeds found in their shelter.

Now, it's having dogs trying chicken nuggets and rating them. The clip required a bag of chicken nuggets, a very official scoring system, and a willingness to report findings with complete journalistic seriousness.

Each dog has a unique personality, and the chicken nuggets somehow managed to bring it out. The result is part amazing adoption promotion, part comedy and one completely adorable video.

Meet the Contestants

First up is Diamond. She is, in the shelter's words, a perfect little house hippo, gentle and sweet as always. She accepts her nugget with the quiet grace of someone who has never done anything wrong in her life. Score: 10/10.

Blue sees the nugget and makes a decision. He drops his toy on the spot and takes it quickly, just in case the offer gets rescinded—a practical and smart dog.

Blaze is Blue's brother. He appears to have made a mess of his kibble at some point prior, but he finds his manners for the chicken. Civil when it counts.

Alex takes a brief pause from loving up on a volunteer to help himself to a nugget. He is, the shelter notes, a very good boy every single day. His score is not in question.

Then we have Meg, short for Megalodon. She offers a sit, unprompted, as if she has been waiting for exactly this opportunity. She is the last one here from her litter.

Darla is a big girl, but she is, as the shelter puts it, still dainty. She chews her nugget very thoroughly. Completely unbothered.

These were six of the dogs at the shelter. There are more. Every one of them deserves a chance at a forever home.

The Real Star of the Video

There is a bigger reason why these videos work so well. Potential visitors often see shelter dogs at their worst. Surrounded by stressful environment, where you cannot judge their personality.

A playful video like this one allows dogs to be silly, affectionate, curious, and motivated to play and snuggle. That helps people connect with individual dogs before even meeting them.

Dogs get exposure, viewers get a laugh, and somewhere among the 10/10 ratings, someone might find the dog they are looking for.

One commenter said all the dogs deserved higher grades, saying, "I disagree, these were all minimally 12/10 for how nice they took them."

I've never met a puppy I didn't instantly think was totally adorable, but even if you're not quite as obsessed with dogs as I am, there's simply no chance you're not going to fall in love with this puppy at first sight.

She is a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Shar Pei, and when this TikTok video described her as a "cinnamon roll," they weren't kidding. That's exactly what she looks like!

The Oklahoma-based Mini Hippoland on TikTok shared this sweet footage of a puppy who was recently adopted. Between those fluffy ears, wrinkly face, and happy little tail wags, it's no wonder that she was snatched right up.

"She was the cutest and sweetest little baby girl," they wrote in their caption. "We miss her but we know she is thriving and doing amazing in her home with her family. Her family says she loves the water and loves to swim. She’s always hanging out by the pool."

It sounds like she's really living her best life — just as she deserves.

What to Expect From a Cocker Spaniel-Shar Pei Mix

Since Cocker Spaniels and Shar Peis are both adorable breeds, it's no surprise that when you mix them together, you get a seriously cute pup.

Their size will depend on their biological parents, of course, and there's a pretty wide variety in what you can expect when they're fully grown. Some Mini Hippos will only grow to be about 25-30 pounds, while others can be more than 50 as adults.

Wags & Wrinkles added that you can also expect them to be a pretty healthy dog through their life, though they do tend to get ear infections because of those precious, floppy ears.

I can handle a lot of weird animal friendships, but a cat using a Doberman's teeth like spa equipment is apparently where my nervous system starts asking questions.

In the video, an older Doberman is sitting with his cat best friend, and at first glance, it looks alarming. His lips are pulled back, his teeth are on full display, and he has the face of a dog auditioning for "most intimidating creature in the house."

Meanwhile, the cat could not care less.

She rubs herself right against him like those scary-looking teeth are a built-in back scratcher. She's calm, casual, and completely confident, while he looks like he is about to announce the end of days. The caption explains that this routine has been going on for years, and that both animals are still happy, healthy, and best friends a year after the internet first got worried.

I appreciate that clarification, because my first reaction was absolutely, "Are we sure?"

But then the clip jumps ahead, and suddenly the whole vibe changes. The kitty is asleep upside down in the Doberman's arms, tucked in like she has never doubted him for a second. His face has softened. The teeth are gone. The drama has melted into something ridiculously sweet.

That's why I think this is so strange and tender. If you don't know them, you might assume danger. If you do know them, it looks more like a very specific friendship language that no one else was invited to learn.

The caption jokes that people warming up their keyboards can relax, because these two have been doing this forever. One comment added that cats always seem to choose the one animal or person who acts least interested and decide to turn them into family. That feels exactly right here. This cat saw a dramatic older Doberman with a tough-guy face and said, "Perfect. That one is mine."

I still find it hard to watch, but I also get it. Older dogs have quirks. Cats have audacity. Best friends have weird rituals.

These two clearly trust each other in a way that looks bizarre from the outside, which is probably why people can't stop watching.

Dog and cat friendships can look odd, but you still want to read both animals before deciding everything is fine. The AKC's dog-and-cat introduction guide is a helpful reminder that even pets who coexist well still need safety, space, and supervision.

• Watch both bodies. Loose posture, soft eyes, and choosing to stay close are different from freezing, hissing, growling, or trying to escape.
• Give the cats exits. High places, open doors, and dog-free zones let the kitty leave before a weird moment turns stressful.
• Respect familiar routines, but stay present. Longtime pet friends may have strange habits, but you should still step in if either animal seems tense.

Teaching a dog a new trick always sounds like a great idea until you realize you've accidentally given them a new skill they intend to use against you for the rest of their natural life. Teach them to shake, and suddenly a paw is flying at you every time you eat a sandwich. Teach them to open a door and congratulations, you no longer have privacy.

But teaching your enormous dog to say "Mama"? That is an entirely different level of power, as one family discovered after their giant gray pup learned how to make a remarkably convincing "Mama" sound. Now he apparently won't stop saying it, and I have only one question: What happens when Mama tries to take a shower?

The hilarious clip was shared by TikTok user @ladbibleireland, who showed off a very large gray dog sitting innocently on the sofa and repeatedly demonstrating the new word his family may already regret teaching him.

The caption explains the situation perfectly: "I taught my dog to say mama and now he won't stop."

And he really does sound like he's saying it.

"Mama."

Just sitting there.

It's adorable during daylight hours while he's sitting peacefully on the sofa.

At 3 a.m., however, I believe we have the opening scene of a horror movie.

People in the comments immediately realized the terrifying potential.

"Imagine hearing this in the dead of night."

Another person suggested, "Teach him 'RUN' in that voice it will be the most terrifying."

Absolutely not. Nobody teach this dog another word.

Someone else apparently watched this and decided they wanted the same problem, writing, "Off to have a word with mine immediately."

But one viewer heard something even sweeter: "I think he's not just saying 'mama' but 'I love mama!' We don't deserve dogs."

Maybe he can keep talking.

Dogs don't speak human language the way we do, but some become remarkably good at imitating sounds they hear frequently. Howling, whining and other sounds can occasionally sound so much like words that it's almost impossible not to hear them that way.

Dogs can also learn that making a particular sound gets a particular response. If saying something that sounds like "Mama" makes everyone laugh, offer attention or hand over a treat, an enthusiastic doggo may have a very good reason to keep doing it.

Many people looking to adopt a dog often go for puppies and young dogs, where older canines tend to linger longer in the shelter. Senior and even middle-aged dogs are sometimes viewed as having more health issues and less energy, making it more of a challenge for them to get adopted.

Baxter is a sweet pooch at the Maui Humane Society and only 2 years old, though many potential pet parents find that hard to believe due to his appearance.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Baxter lay on a mattress in his kennel and stared at the wall. His extensive mange was immediately noticeable, giving his skin a crusty, almost wrinkled appearance.

Mange in dogs is a skin disease caused by mites found in the hair follicles of canines, with symptoms including itching, alopecia (hair loss), wounds from intense scratching, raised bumps, and skin lesions. Baxter's advanced case had clearly taken a physical toll.

"Nobody ever believes he's 2 years old," the on-screen text shared as. "Baxter has severe mange covering much of his body."

Baxter also has a grade 5 out of 6 heart murmur, and was suffering emotionally as well. Prior to being brought to the shelter, Baxter was lost on the street for 3 weeks while battling this condition. His fear and anxiety overwhelmed him, making it difficult for him to even leave his kennel.

"I just wanted to get his profile picture today," the story continued. "At first, he was too scared to even walk in the yard. He ran back into the catchment pen."

With some hot dog bits and loving encouragement, Baxter headed outside and enjoyed some fresh air and affection. The precious pooch even playfully rolled in the grass and received a much-needed belly rub.

Mange Is Treatable With Medical Intervention

Dogs with mange need to be seen by a veterinarian for proper treatment, which includes topical medications, shampoos, and sometimes anti-parasitic medications. Antibiotics may also be prescribed for secondary bacterial skin infections caused from a dog scratching themselves.

Canines will often be required to wear a cone or suit during their treatment and recovery to prevent further scratching and irritation.

"He's more than his mange, more than his heart murmur," the text noted. "He's just a happy 2 year old who wants to enjoy life."

Hopefully someone will soon open their heart to Baxter and give him the love and care he deserves.

What to Expect From an Australian Shepherd-Lab Mix

The beautiful design of Rascal’s coat may have people clamoring to get their own Australian Shepherd-Labrador mix, not that we can blame them. However, before adopting a dog like this, there are a few important things to consider.

First, this combination is going to produce a mid-sized dog with weight ranging between 40-80 pounds. This isn’t a good dog for people with limited space, such as people who live in apartments or share a house with several other people.

These two breeds are known for being active, working dogs. Combining them will almost guarantee a pup will be a high energy handful. If considering an Aussiedor, know that you’ll need to give them plenty of mental stimulation as well as time and space to exert themselves physically. An active parent is best for these dogs. They don't want to stay cooped up inside napping all day, as it can lead to destructive behaviors like chewing and digging.

Furthermore, Australian-Shepherd-Labrador mixes are friendly. Like their Labrador forefathers, they love to meet new people and are eager to please their humans. While Australian Shepherds can be more reserved, this trait rarely shows up for Aussiedors, unless improperly socialized. In fact, some even refer to them as “Velcro dogs.”

Within seconds of arriving, Fig jumped right onto the bed as if he were in our very own apartment.

His expression seemed to say, “Yes, this will do. I live here now. Welcome to my new home!”

Once he had confirmed that the accommodations met his rawther high standards, Fig discovered that The Plaza had prepared a special welcome just for him. He received a letter from Weenie, Eloise’s beloved dog, welcoming him to the hotel.

Sure, you're in New York City, but if you've never been before, you may be curious if The Plaza is near any touristy areas that both you and your dog can enjoy. The good news is, it is! The hotel is located on the south side of Central Park, in close proximity to the Central Park Zoo.

Given the hotel’s ultra-close proximity to it, my husband and I took Fig for his first-ever Central Park experience during our stay. While you walk through the park, you can see many places that movies were filmed. You can even find the Gapstow Bridge from Home Alone, where Kevin McAllister first sees the pigeon lady.

Other Home Alone filming locations in the park include both the Wollman Rink and Bethesda Terrace. (The Wollman rink is an ice skating rink during the winter that features stunning views of the city and a pickleball court in the warmer months.)

The Louis Vuitton building is not far from this dog-friendly NYC hotel.

Aside from Central Park, another great thing about its location is that its on Fifth Avenue, which is where a bunch of luxury stores are located, so we all went on a jaunt down the fabulous street and Fig got a photo with the famous Louis Vuitton trunk building.

Near The Plaza there are many restaurants as well that offer NYC pet-friendly outdoor dining. I recommend going to Quality Bistro and Match 65 Brasserie if you aren't sure where to eat. Both are French restaurants that will make you feel a bit like you've stopped in Paris during your NYC stay.

Is the Pampered Pup Experience Worth it?

For me, as a human, being at The Plaza itself was absolutely worth it. In fact, staying at The Plaza has been a bucket-list item for me for years.

While the room has its classic look, I was most impressed to see how many modern luxuries were built in. The shower’s water pressure is fantastic, the bed is incredibly comfortable, and, yes, the TV has Netflix. All of this will be a part of your stay regardless of whether you choose to add on the pup package or not.

As a dual income, no kids couple whose dog is basically our human child, the Pampered Pup stay was as much for us as it was for Fig. We got an absolute kick out of seeing him in his little plush robe and watching how happy he was to get his fancy macaron treats.

For us it was a staycation, but if you were traveling to New York City with your dog, the level of dog-friendliness at the hotel is a big win.

Room rates for the Pampered Pup Package start at $1,445 per night, and go up from there based on room type and availability.

Is it a splurge? Absolutely. But you're paying for an experience with your dog you'll remember for the rest of your life.

By the end of our visit, I was pretty sure Fig had forgotten that we had an apartment downtown to return to. As far as he was concerned, he had checked into The Plaza, received an official welcome from Weenie and secured a prime spot on the bed.

And really, who could blame him? It dawned on me that this was Fig’s first-ever hotel experience. It seems we may have screwed up, given he will likely only ever accept this level of luxury in the future!

How To Tell When Your Dog Is Truly Happy

Most of the time, it's obvious when a dog is feeling happy because their body language shows it.

Some of the signs are a relaxed body, soft eyes, an open mouth, floppy ears, and the most on-par move, a wagging tail. If they're truly content—and not just in that moment—they'll "tell" their humans by resting nearby, leaning or snuggling against you, and asking to play (like bringing you a toy). Other really cute signals might be:

• Zoomies when they're excited to see you
• Play bowing to say "it's time to do something fun"
• Content sighs like a huff or sigh when they finally rest

Most animals that encounter a resting pride of lions make a quiet exit. However, one baby rhino had a different read on the situation.

A recent YouTube clip posted by Latest Sighting shows a rhinoceros mother and her calf approaching a group of lions that have settled in the middle of the road. The channel uploads authentic sightings from across Africa, and this one is a banger.

The lions have the road to themselves until the mother and calf come walking straight toward them. Initially, the lions look unfazed, but as the rhinos inch closer, the pride starts to reconsider the situation.

The Calf Seems to Discover His Courage

The calf, rather than staying behind his mother as the lions scatter, moves toward the remaining ones himself. He is the smallest thing in the frame by a wide margin, but the lions move anyway.

One commenter noted the reality: "Having a bodyguard the size of a house certainly helps." The calf moves like an animal that has not yet learned to calculate odds.

That difference, between instinct and experience, is what makes the video enjoyable and interesting.

The comment that may be the most accurate summary of the whole encounter: "Typical cats always blocking the damn hallway."

Why the Lions Moved at All

The mother is the obvious reason the pride cleared the path. A white rhino cow can weigh over 1,700 kilograms, and a female with a calf is among the least predictable animals on the savanna. Lions are practical hunters. They calculate the odds of whether it is worth the risk.

One viewer put it simply, "The presence of big mama is the key factor." Another added, "Ah, the benefits you have when your mom is a tank."

What Lion Behavior Actually Tells Us

Lions are selective about confrontation. They are ambush predators that rely on energy conservation, and a direct face-off with an adult rhino is not something they want.

The pride's retreat is not fear. It is a cost-benefit decision.

If the calf was alone, the outcome might have been different. The giant rhino mother beside him makes him less vulnerable.

The 9 Red Flags of Canine Dental Disease

Canine dental disease should be taken as seriously as any other medical condition. "Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions, and something that veterinarians like me probably see in most of our patients," says Dr. Jo Myers, a veterinarian and a veterinary consultant at Vetster. "It's much more than a cosmetic problem or a cause of bad breath. As periodontal disease progresses, it destroys the tissues that support the teeth, leading to chronic inflammation, infection, bone loss, loose teeth and unnecessary pain that can significantly affect a dog's quality of life."

These are the nine potential signs of canine dental disease you should take seriously:

1. Bad breath. This is "often the first thing people notice," says Dr. Kate Elden, a veterinarian and the chief medical officer at Dutch. "The smell is driven by bacteria in the mouth."
2. Red, swollen or bleeding gums. 
3. Visible yellow or brown tartar/calculus buildup. "Pet parents tend to just check the front teeth (incisors), but vets want to know what’s going on with the molars in the back," Dr. Elden says. "It’s common for the incisors to be clean and the pre-molars and molars to have build up."
4. Chewing on one side or dropping food.
5. Suddenly avoiding kibble, hard treats or chew toys.
6. Excessive drooling or blood in the saliva, water bowl or on toys.
7. Pawing at the mouth or rubbing the face.
8. Loose, broken or discolored teeth. "Most people don’t realize this, but a pink, purple or gray tooth means the pulp inside has been badly damaged or has died," Dr. Elden says.
9. Swelling along the jaw or underneath an eye. "Swelling below one eye can actually come from an infected upper tooth," Dr. Elden says.

How Dental Disease Damages the Heart and Kidneys

"Dental disease isn't just a problem of the mouth. Instead, it can cause damage to the whole body," says Dr. Ronit Berdugo, a veterinarian and an expert partner at SynergyLabs. "Bacteria that accumulate along and under the gum line can gain access to the bloodstream, spreading bacteria and causing inflammation of vital organs. Bacteria in the bloodstream can stick to heart valves, causing endocarditis. This bacteria and the inflammation caused as a consequence can weaken the muscles of the heart too. Dogs with underlying heart disease can be especially affected. The kidneys filter toxins from the bloodstream, and can become damaged from repeated exposure to bacteria."

However, correlation does not necessarily define causation. The relationship between kidney, heart and dental disease is actually fairly nuanced. "Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream during everyday activities like chewing, and researchers have identified bacterial DNA in organs such as the heart and kidneys," Dr. Myers says. "However, despite decades of research, current veterinary evidence has not conclusively shown that routine periodontal disease directly causes heart disease or kidney disease in otherwise healthy dogs."

That said, Dr. Myers stresses that no conclusive evidence does not make canine periodontal disease and oral hygiene less important. "What we do know with confidence is that it is a chronic inflammatory disease that progressively destroys the tissues supporting the teeth. Left untreated, it can lead to painful infections, tooth root abscesses, bone loss, loose teeth and tooth loss, all of which can have a significant impact on a dog's comfort and quality of life," she says.

What Actually Happens During a Dog Dental Cleaning (COHAT)?

A dog dental cleaning is also known as a COHAT. "COHAT stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment, and it’s a medical procedure, not just a cosmetic one where tartar is scraped off the visible teeth," Dr. Elden explains. "During a COHAT, the dog is placed under general anesthesia with a breathing tube and continuous monitoring. The veterinary team takes full-mouth dental X-rays, examines and probes every tooth, cleans above and below the gum line, polishes the teeth, and charts everything they find. Diseased or painful teeth are treated or extracted, with local nerve blocks and pain medication given as needed."

While some cleanings may be offered without the use of anesthesia, Dr. Elden doesn't advise this. "Anesthesia-free cleanings may look cheaper, but they are not a true COHAT," Dr. Elden says. "They remove visible tartar but miss disease below the gum line, and that is where periodontal disease causes pain, infection, bone loss and tooth loss. The teeth may look cleaner while the disease remains, which can give pet parents a false sense of security."

How Much Does a Professional Dog Dental Cleaning Cost?

There are various factors that contribute to how much a COHAT will run you. "The cost of a professional dental cleaning varies depending on where you live, your dog's size and health, and whether any teeth need to be extracted," Dr. Berdugo says. "Generally speaking, a routine COHAT can cost approximately $500–$1,200. Dental X-rays and extractions can add approximately $1,000–$2,500 to the bill. It's important to understand what's included in your dog's COHAT estimate, as different practices package their services differently."

These various costs can add up quickly, and financially this can definitely be a lot. However, Dr. Berdugo stresses that pet parents should look at routine dental care as an investment, and ultimately something that will save you money (and your dog pain) in the long run.

"I know it can seem like a significant investment, but treating dental disease early is always less expensive and much kinder to your dog than waiting until painful infections or tooth root abscesses develop," Dr. Berdugo says.

For 17 years, Elizabeth-Sophie Stevens had no idea where her cat Mozart was. Back then, she was a student studying in Bordeaux, France. Mozart was only about a year old at the time, and although he had a habit of wandering off for several days, he had always returned home.

However, one day in 2009, he left his home and never returned.

Although Stevens worried about what had happened to her cat, she eventually moved on with her life, including adopting another cat, Ghandi.

However, on July 25, Sandrine Clarens, a volunteer for L'Association Mérignac Chats Errants, reached out to Stevens and informed her that her Mozart had been found just a few hours earlier.

"I recognized him immediately. It's incredible," Stevens told Sud Ouest.

How the French Wildfires Helped Bring Home Mozart

This summer, the southwest part of France was affected by massive wildfires. While the Gironde megafire has finally been contained, it ravaged the region for several days.

The fires burned tens of thousands of hectares, forcing mass evacuations across the region. Volunteers for L'Association Mérignac Chats Errants moved through areas affected by the fires to rescue domestic and wild animals.

One volunteer, Anne-Sophie Jouan, spent two weeks driving through affected areas when an elderly woman asked her to collect her dog and cat from Lège-Cap-Ferret, a commune in southwest France.

Jouan found the animals and scanned them for a microchip. However, the cat's microchip indicated they didn't belong to the woman who asked Jouan to collect him.

The microchipped cat was Mozart, who was still registered under Stevens' name.

Mozart Had Been Living With Another Family

After disappearing in 2009, Mozart didn't live as a stray. Instead, for the last 17 years, he lived with another family.

Jouan, the volunteer who found him, said there was no indication anyone had stolen him. She believes the new family fed him as a stray-looking cat, and then gradually came to regard him as their own pet.

"I can just imagine the reunion," wrote one person in the comments of the YouTube clip. Another added that he hopes the cat had been loved and surrounded by people.

One man jokingly shared, "The poor cat. He had managed to escape, to regain his freedom, and they brought him back to prison 17 years later."

Dogs are often smart and agile animals. Some of these impressive pups even enter competitions to measure athleticism and intelligence. Typically, these are agility competitions, but the competition for one group of pups looks a little bit different.

The World Dog Surfing Championship was held on August 1 and featured dozens of them. With just a little bit of encouragement from their humans, these dogs fought to get first place in surfing. What a sight to behold!

Wow, this is beyond impressive! A variety of pups were entered in the competition; some sporting goggles while others donned life vests for safety. No matter what the dog was wearing though, they were cruising through the water and having the time of their lives. Everyone looks like a winner to us!

People in the comments were beyond impressed with the display of athleticism. One person said, “It’s so amazing that dogs can actually surf!! What an incredible experience for them!!” while another person commented, “The backward one being upper level.”

Others compared these dogs to their own pups, such as a viewer who said, “This is so sweet! Meanwhile my dog trips over her own feet LOL.”

These surfing dogs are nothing short of amazing. With all of these spectators, they kept their cool and put on a fantastic display of canine athleticism. We love to see it!

How To Teach Your Dog to Swim in the Ocean

After watching this video, there’s no doubt several dog parents are suddenly itching to teach their dogs to surf. However, before a dog can get to this level, they need to be comfortable swimming in the ocean. There are a few ways to help your pup feel safe while swimming in the open water.

First, your dog should learn to swim in calm waters, such as a pool or a small lake. Encourage them to enter the water using positive reinforcement through treats and toys. Continue to encourage them to swim deeper so they can learn to tread water. Additionally, your dog should wear a life vest from the beginning so they will be comfortable wearing one in the ocean.

When your pup is a confident swimmer in the pool or lake, you may feel it’s time to venture to the ocean for more of a challenge. Remain close by incase of large waves or strong currents. Encourage them to feel the rocking of the water and allow them to acclimate to this new sensation.

Remember not to let your dog over-do it in the water. Pups love to play and don’t always know when to call it quits. Some dogs experience water intoxication while swimming from swallowing excess fresh water, and others get saltwater poisoning at the beach. Additionally, excess time in the water can cause exhaustion and ear infections from trapped moisture.

These surfing dogs are major pros. They're comfortable in water and know how to balance on a surf board while riding the waves. We're already looking forward to this competition next year!

Many dogs wind up in shelters after living in one home their entire life. Whether they are surrendered due to health issues, relocation, or financial difficulties, these canines are left feeling confused and abandoned when separated from the only home they've ever known.

Her whole world changed overnight 💔 Now, she’s in a stressful shelter and she doesn’t understand why? 🥺 After spending almost her entire life in a loving home, 3-year-old April was sadly brought to our shelter when a medical situation meant her owner could no longer care for her 😔 Sometimes life changes in ways no one can control, and now April is starting all over 🙏 Our volunteers adore her ❤️ They says she’s very affectionate, loves belly rubs and gives lots of kisses! She’ll happily sit right in front of you waiting for pets, then once she gets outside she spends a few minutes sniffing before the zoomies kick in. It’s impossible not to smile watching her run around 🥹 Her family says she’s house trained, loves people, has lived with cats, dogs, and even young children, and already knows commands like sit, stop, and down. She loves running around the backyard, going to dog parks, and if you’ve ever wanted a dog that hands out kisses for free... April is your girl. 🥹 She does get excited when meeting people and is still working on not jumping up, but our staff has already been helping her with that every day. She’s smart, eager to please, and just needs someone willing to keep showing her the love and patience she’s always known. April already knows what it’s like to be part of a family. The TikTok from @humanebroward shared April's story and how she ended up at the shelter through no fault of her own.

"Her [parent] became ill and could no longer care for her," the on-screen text explained as April slowly got up from her dog bed in her kennel, looking timid. "She doesn't know why her world changed and is so confused."

The precious pooch lived in one place since being adopted three years ago and now has to navigate an unfamiliar and stressful shelter.

April Deserves a Second Chance at Happiness

This canine cutie is house-trained, loves people, and is good with dogs, cats, and kids. April knows commands like sit, stop, and down, and enjoys running around the yard and going to dog parks. Apparently, she's also quite a love bug.

April is intelligent, social, and has a loving disposition. The friendly fur baby would make a wonderful addition to any family. Hopefully, someone will soon open their heart to April and give her a home that's truly forever.

Some dogs are adventurous, and even if you love that sort of thing, it's still nerve-wracking. I swear, there are just some dogs who want to do whatever they possibly can to stress you out! I feel lucky that my dogs at least hesitate a little!

For one Newfoundland, his newest attempt at always seeking adventure almost ended with him swimming off and joining a pod of dolphins forever. He was wearing a little fin to boot:

Chewy the Newfie recently lost his grandma, whom he loved more than anyone else in the world, and gained a new sister named Mabel. She's the tiny puppy in the back! She follows Chewy everywhere, including (almost) out to see!

Chewy, who's older and a much stronger swimmer, was allowed to jump into the water by himself (life jacket ON, of course), and he seems to really contemplate swimming out to say hi to those dolphins. He ended up deciding not to, though, which was probably for the best.

They had a ton of fun playing in the water that day! After Chewy's close call with his dolphin friends, he and his little sister decided to go for a swim with some of the human kids, and it was perfect:

The shark fins on the life jackets aren't technically necessary, but they don't hurt, and they're absurdly cute! The two of them definitely look like fish; Chewy would have blended in perfectly with the dolphins.

Should Dogs be Wearing Life Jackets In the Water?

Chewy is over 200 pounds, and he could probably hold his own against a pod of dolphins, but he still has a life jacket on. No matter how big he is, his mom always wants to make sure he's safe!

Ideally, all dogs should wear a life jacket when they're in open water, such as lakes, oceans, or ponds... Anywhere with a current that could get away from them. If you're just in your own swimming pool, it might not be necessary, unless:

• Your dog is a bad swimmer.
• They get tired quickly.
• They're a breed that struggles to keep their head above the water.

Additionally, during any activities on the water (like boating, tubing, and paddleboarding), your dog should always be wearing a life jacket, even if they're a super strong swimmer. Plus, who knows? Maybe it'll help them make friends with dolphins!
