One of my favorite things about dogs is how desperately they want to be included in whatever their family is doing. You could tell a dog you're going to the world's most boring place to spend three days watching paint dry, and as long as you add, "Do you want to come?" they're already waiting by the car.

Dogs are incredibly resilient and often bounce back from illnesses and injuries despite the odds being against them. When given the love and care they need, these canines put in the courage and hard work it takes to overcome serious conditions.

Stormzy the German Shepherd mix was rescued last October by Niall Harbison, founder of the Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, after a serious head injury. Now recovered and living in his new forever family, Stormzy paid a visit to show his caretakers how their hard work paid off.

Stormzy suffered extensive brain damage when he was hit by a car. The precious pooch was so badly wounded that euthanasia seemed to be the most humane option. But Stormzy's will to live inspired Harbison and his team to help him beat the odds through daily physical therapy, patience, and plenty of affection.

The canine cutie's determination was unwavering. Stormzy fought his way back to health and was adopted to his forever home in January of this year. The fearless fur baby recently stopped by the Happy Doggo rescue and amazed everyone with his progress.

"It took months to get him back walking again," the on-screen text explained as clips showed Stormzy struggling just to get on his feet. Harbison worked with the pup daily to strengthen his legs. "Today his parents brought him back to where it all started."

Stormzy Is an Inspiration

The Instagram video featured Stormzy at a much bigger size with a healthy physique and shiny coat. The German Shepherd mix can now easily run and showed off his swagger to Harbison and his team as he jogged on the sidewalk and along the beach.

"He couldn't stop running and having fun," the story continued. "I think he remembered."

Harbison was literally overwhelmed with joy and reflected on how far Stormzy had come in his recovery journey.

"In the dark wet days I thought he might have a limited life but I could never in my wildest dreams have imagined Stormzy coming back looking like this," the caption raved. "He is a wonderful reminder to never give up In life and to always keep fighting. I’ve not had as enjoyable a couple of hours in years."

Thanks to Stormzy's bravery and resilience, along with the dedication of Harbison and his team, this sweet pooch is living his best life with his forever family.

We often think of cats as solo hunters. Visit a zoo or watch ann animal documentary, and you might see jaguars and leopards living in solitude. In fact, according to Dr. Hilary Humm-Beatty, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, house cats have an inner circle. She notes that research even suggests that cats can form bonds with people, similar to dogs. But how do you know if your cat considers you one of their own, and how do you become a part of your cat's family in the first place? Read on to see 6 signs your cat sees you as part of the inner circle, according to vets.

"Cats have an inner circle of trusted cats and other humans because they are social animals, and they are selective about their group of trusted humans and other cats that they bond with," Dr. Humm-Beatty says. "The bonds that cats form with their inner circle are based on shared resources, trust and safety."

In other words, cats don't get physically or emotionally close to just anyone—you have to earn it. Rule number one? Show your kitty the R-E-S-P-E-C-T they desire, even if it means backing off when you have a cuddle craving and they don't.

"In order to become part of your cat’s inner circle, it is especially important to be consistent and calm and to respect your cat’s physical boundaries," Dr. Humm-Beatty notes.

While it might be hard at first, you'll realize that by doing so, it helps your furry companion become closer to you than ever and their affection for you will grow. Before long, you'll even start to notice some sweet signs that your cat loves you so much that they don't just view you as their owner but as their pet parent you as part of their family.

Despite their reputation as "antisocial" and "aloof," cats can totally form strong bonds with people no matter if you foster one or rescue one from a shelter. In fact, your cat may see you as their family. Dr. Humm-Beatty shared six signs your cat like you and trusts you that much.

1. They curl up next to you for their cat naps

When it comes to signs your cat loves you, how they sleep can be one of them. "Cat naps" have a whole new meaning when your cat knows how much they can count on you to be their biggest advocate and security blanket.

Dr. Humm-Beatty says it's a major sign of trust and attachment when cats curl up in your lap or at your feet. "In the wild, cats are vulnerable to attack when sleeping," Dr. Humm-Beatty explains. "If a cat chooses to sleep on or near you, then this is a sign that they trust you as a safe, protective person."

2. They make biscuits on you

Have you ever wondered, "Why does my cat knead on me?" No, your cat isn't trying to get in on the sourdough trend when they knead at your chest or stomach. Instead, cats "make biscuits" on humans they consider part of their inner circle. Dr. Humm-Beatty explains that it's often a sign your cat feels secure, attached to and affectionate towards you and that the behavior stems from kittenhood.

"As young animals, kittens purr and knead as they nurse on their mothers," Dr. Humm-Beatty notes. "This behavior marks their owner with pheromones from the scent glands in their paws."

3. They expose their stomach to you

Cat bonding signs can be tricky to catch because they can be subtle and they aren't always what you might expect.

In fact, unlike their canine counterparts, cats aren't asking for a belly rub when they expose their stomach to you. Instead, it's a sign of affection—and more. "This is a very vulnerable position for a cat, and if they assume this position with their owner, it shows the cat trusts and feels safe with their person," Dr. Humm-Beatty says. 

4. They headbutt you

Your cat isn't trying to plow through you like a bull when they headbutt you. Why do cats headbutt then? Headbutting—often called head bunting—is a cat behavior that actually lets you know they love you so much that they consider you a part of their inner circle.

"This is a way cats communicate these feelings to each other in the wild," Dr. Humm-Beatty explains. "When cats headbutt or rub, they release pheromones from scent glands on their face. Pheromones are special chemicals used for communication."

As a cat mom or dad you can't smell these chemicals, but Dr. Humm-Beatty says cats consider you "marked" when they rub their heads and faces on you.

5. They engage in play with you

Pups aren't the only playful pets you can have! Cats of all ages can engage in play with people who make them feel safe. Dr. Humm-Beatty says cats will try to start a play session through vocalizations, by bringing you gifts, like toys, prey or by pawing or nudging you.

"These cat behaviors show that the cat sees you as a safe companion," Dr. Humm-Beatty gushes. "It is really important for your cat’s well-being that you engage in this invitation to play, as it allows your cat to do instinctual behaviors, release endorphins, and keep their brains happy and healthy."

Responding to your cat's invitation to play not only satisfies their natural hunting instincts but also helps strengthen your cat-human bond. Regular interactive play is one of the best ways to build trust, reduce stress, and reinforce the affectionate relationship you share with your feline friend.

6. Soft blink

What is one of the biggest signs your cat loves you? Cats often communiate with their eyes, which is why you have to pay attention to their body language or you might miss what they're trying to tell you.

"When a cat closes its eyes in the wild, it makes them vulnerable to attack," Dr. Humm-Beatty states. "If a cat does this slow blinking behavior with you, it shows that it feels safe. Evolutionarily, when cats use slow eye movements, it shows that they are passive and not intending to fight."

So the next time you see your furbaby do this, you won't have to think to yourself, "Why does my cat slow blink at me?" Instead, you'll know it's a cute form of feline communication.

Want to show your kitty you feel the same way? Dr. Humm-Beatty says you can say "I love you, too" by slow blinking back at them.

Asphalt, concrete, and even sand can soak up sun all day and hold onto that heat long after the air starts to cool. To us, a hot sidewalk might just feel warm underfoot. But for a dog walking on bare paws, that same surface may be scorching enough to cause real damage in a matter of seconds.

The tricky part is that pavement doesn't have to look dangerous to be dangerous. A sidewalk may appear perfectly normal and still be hot enough to burn, blister or otherwise injure your dog's paw pads, which may be painful, slow to heal and easy to miss until your dog is already limping.

The good news? There's a simple, no-equipment-needed way to check to make sure your dog's safe. We spoke to two veterinarians to learn the simple trick, plus additional ways to keep your dog's paws protected. Here's what to know to keep your dog safe during the dog days of summer.

Why 85-Degree Air Means 135-Degree Asphalt

Even if the air is comfortable for us humans, that doesn’t mean it’s safe for your dog’s paws. As Dr. Ronit Berdugo, a veterinarian and expert partner at SynergyLabs, explains, asphalt is typically black or dark gray, which means it can get hotter than a light-colored surface. This material also reflects little to no heat right away, and the material itself retains and releases heat, meaning it can get hot really quickly. For example, even if the temperature in the air is 85 degrees, this may cause asphalt to reach 135 degrees. 

Dr. Berdugo reiterates that at this temperature, your dog’s paws may burn in less than a minute. Even if your dog’s paws are rough, it is still living tissue and susceptible to burn injury from the asphalt. If the asphalt is too hot on a human’s foot, it is definitely too hot for a dog’s paw. 

How to Perform the 7-Second Pavement Test (The Right Way)

As scary as it may be to not know whether the pavement is too hot for your puppy’s paws, there's a very easy way to test it out before going out for a walk. 

The 7-second pavement test is the easiest way you can confirm the temperature of the ground before letting your canine companion’s paws ever touch it. Dr. Philip Putter, a small animal veterinarian and the founder and owner of Spot On Veterinary Hospital & Hotel in Stamford and Westport, Connecticut, says to place your bare skin (like the back of your hand) against the pavement. If it’s too uncomfortable to hold it there for 7 seconds, then it is too hot for your dog. 

4 Red-Alert Signs Your Dog's Paws Are Already Burned

If you’ve walked your dog out in the hot weather and aren’t sure if their toe beans are burned, there are a few red flags you can look out for to tell.

Clues like refusing to walk or walking with a limp, discoloration of the paws, crying when standing or walking, and bleeding, blistering, or cracking of the paws can give you a sign that your dog’s paws are already burned, according to Dr. Berdugo. 

Any concerning changes to the surface of your dog’s paw is worth pointing out to their veterinarian, as burnt paws can be very painful.

Immediate First Aid: What to Do If You Suspect a Paw Burn

One of the most important parts of dealing with burned paws is ensuring you render aid immediately to avoid having the injury get worse. Here are the three things to do ASAP if you suspect a burnt paw.

1. Get them off the hot pavement.

The first course of action if you suspect your dog has a burned paw is to get them off of the hot pavement as soon as possible. Dr. Putter recommends placing them in a cool location, ideally inside. This is to prevent the burn from increasing in intensity and to be able to best treat them.  

2. Apply cool water.

You'll want to cool down your dog’s paws as soon as possible. You can either run them under cool water, submerge the paw in cool water or apply a cold compress. As tempting as it may be, Dr. Putter warns against applying ice on the paws because this could further damage the tissue. 

3. Contact your veterinarian.

If your dog’s paws are visibly damaged, Dr. Putter recommends contacting your veterinarian to best diagnose the intensity of the injury, as this will determine the method of treatment. Even if there is no visible injury, you should still contact your dog’s vet if you notice any pain or limping when walking. 

3 Vet-Approved Ways to Protect Your Dog's Feet This Summer

Even though it’s best to avoid hot pavement, it doesn’t mean it’s an easy task to accomplish. However, there are a few vet-approved ways you can help keep your dog’s paws safe while still enjoying the summer weather. 

1. Adjust your walking schedule.

Every dog needs a walk, making it hard to avoid hot surfaces during the summer. However, Dr. Putter recommends switching your dog’s walking schedule to earlier in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest temperatures of the day. 

2. Opt for different surfaces.

Instead of heading down hot pavements, opt for grassy or shaded areas that provide a cooler surface. These cooler spots can offer your dog a more ideal temperature without having them miss out on their daily physical activities. 

3. Switch your activity locations.

If it’s too hot outside to walk around, opt for indoor dog daycares or play around in the yard with sprinklers. Switching up your typical walks is an easy way to let them still have fun in the summer without risking any burnt paws.

New York City claims the top spot with cat owners making up 55.6 percent of the pet parents in the Big Apple. Brooklyn, N.Y., follows with 53 percent, with Philadelphia (52.5 percent), New Orleans (51.4 percent) and Oakland, Calif., (49.3 percent) rounding out the top five.

The next ten cities include Los Angeles; Berkeley, Calif.; San Francisco; Boston; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; Chicago; Minneapolis; Washington, D.C.; and Denver.

Looking at the data, the wider New York City metro area has the biggest concentration of cat lovers in the United States. California occupies four spots, and all of the bigger cities on the East Coast rank high on the list.

Why Cities Work So Well for Cats

City living and cat ownership are a natural match, and the rankings certainly make a case.

Unlike dogs, cats need far less space in a home. They can function perfectly in small apartments, while dogs usually need a big yard to be happy. A studio apartment in Manhattan or a one-bedroom in Oakland is more than enough for cats to claim as their territory.

Dense urban neighborhoods also have most of the services cat parents need, including 24-hour vet clinics, specialty pet stores, grooming options and more within walking distance.

New York and Philadelphia, two of the top three cities, have large renter populations in older apartment buildings. Dogs need daily walks and time outdoors no matter the weather. Cats do not.

How to Keep Indoor Cats Engaged

Cats can thrive indoors when given enough stimulation. While they are adaptable, pet parents still need to put in some effort. Cats still need opportunities to hunt, scratch, climb and rest. Skipping those basic activities can result in a destructive or anxious pet.

First and foremost, give them something to hunt. Cats love to stalk and pounce. Interactive toys that cater to that instinct help.

There's also catnip, which gives cats a euphoric feeling that will have them rolling, rubbing and vocalizing. Look for toys made with 100 percent organic catnip.

Finally, create vertical space. Cats climb, and in the wild, height means safety and the ability to observe their surroundings.

In the TikTok from @mercyfullproject, Jeff bounced up and down in his kennel to greet a staff member and couldn't contain his joy at getting a visitor.
