There is a specific kind of anxiety that comes with finding a lump on a senior dog. For one German shepherd parent, that anxiety turned into a three-month battle.

At that point, three months can feel like forever when your dog is sick. Salvador, a 12-year-old German shepherd, was diagnosed with a tumor known as an epithelioma of the hepatoid glands.

These tumors are common in older dogs, yet they carry a lower risk of being malignant. Despite everything, any surgery on a senior pet is a significant event.

That's why so many people on Reddit's r/germanshepherds were celebrating after Salvador's parent shared the news that he had successfully overcome the tumor.

Simple, yet Powerful Update

The update was simple, "My GSD Salvador 'The Predator' 12 years-old beat a tumor," but the emotional reaction was not. And the community knew how much that meant to him.

What Is an Epithelioma of the Hepatoid Glands?

Despite the intimidating name, these tumors are often treatable when caught early. Hepatoid gland tumors usually appear around the anal region and are more common in older dogs, especially males. Most of the time, they are benign or only mildly malignant, which gives parents reason for optimism when surgery is possible.

That hopeful side is something pet parents love. We all panic when we hear the word "tumor," and understandably so. But not every diagnosis carries the same outcome. In cases like this, successful removal can give dogs many more comfortable, happy years.

A turkey named Mayonnaise is melting hearts after meeting her adopted babies for the first time. Though she’d never had chicks of her own, the sweet bird immediately stepped into the role—taking charge as if she’d been waiting for this moment all along.

A diver in Australia captured mesmerizing footage of a rare octopus seemingly vanishing beneath the sand in seconds — and marine life fans can’t stop watching.

Diver Jules Casey, who often shares underwater footage to her OneBreathDiver Instagram account, captured the elusive Double-Spot Octopuscamouflaging itself beneath the sand, a sighting 10 years in the making.

If you’re mesmerized, you’re not alone. This small underwater creature is found in the coastal waters of southern Australia, particularly around areas like Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. The species gets its name from the distinctive dark spots located near the rear of its body, though those markings can become difficult to see as the octopus changes color to blend into its surroundings.

As seen in Casey’s video, the Double-Spot Octopus has remarkable camouflage abilities, making the species both difficult to spot and difficult to study.

While many octopuses hide among rocks or coral, the Double-Spot Octopus burrows directly into the sand. Using its arms, it rapidly pulls sand and sediment over itself while simultaneously changing color and texture to match the ocean floor.

Though the octopus may appear to completely vanish beneath the sand, it is actually covering itself and blending seamlessly into its surroundings.

What viewers describe as alien-like behavior is actually the remarkable camouflage ability the octopus uses to protect itself from predators under the sea.

Truly remarkable, indeed.

Ariyah the Cane Corso puppy lives with her parents on her own, but they see her brother's 3-year-old Golden Retriever all the time. They'll be around each other often enough that they'll need to establish a food chain... And clearly, the Golden came out on top.

Ariyah is only 14 weeks old, so meeting other dogs is mostly off the table: she still has one round of shots left. They don't want her to be around others until she's fully vaccinated, which is the smart and safe way to go, but they know the Golden Retriever well. She's all vaccinated and good to go!

For many pet parents, upright ears are among the breed's most recognizable features. German shepherd puppies are usually born with floppy ears, and they gradually begin standing anywhere between eight weeks and six months old.

Some puppies go through hilarious "one up, one down" stages for weeks before both ears finally commit.

Teething can make the process even stranger. Cartilage development uses calcium, causing some puppies to temporarily lose ear stiffness while adult teeth come in. This is why some pet parents say that they often wake up to completely different ears every morning.

The TikTok from @soccercatmom told the beautiful story of the special bond between these two sweet foster cats.

"Lieutenant Dan was so scared when we got her," the online text explained as the black-and-white kitten lay curled up in a ball. "Thankfully, it wasn't too long before her sister, Jenny, took her under her wing."

Clips showed Jenny cuddling and caressing her little sister as she watched over her, which helped the disabled kitty come out of her shell.

"There was an overnight change in Lieutenant Dan," the story continued as the two feline siblings snuggled. "She felt safe. It was so cute to watch her run to Jenny each morning. I truly believe Jenny helped heal Lieutenant Dan."

Jenny Was Adopted by Forever Family

As Lieutenant Dan gained confidence and strength, she became more independent. Jenny realized she fulfilled her role in helping her younger sibling and gave her space to grow. Though they didn't spend as much time together, their solid bond was unbreakable.

The older cat was recently adopted and was heading to a new home with a fellow foster named Shrimp Boat. Their foster mom shared that while she's "sad" for Lt. Dan, she knows Jenny is ready to move on.

The Scientific American TikTok shows footage of this newly discovered species, and the resemblance to Sesame Street's Mr. Snuffleupagus is absolutely uncanny. Flowing filaments that look like shaggy fur. A long snout. That distinctive silhouette. Even the eyes seem right.

And for good reason. Because this isn't just a cute naming coincidence. This fish genuinely looks like an underwater muppet, and the story behind its discovery is equally magical.

The Real Science Behind the Ocean's Newest 'Muppet' Species

David Harasti first spotted this creature in 2002 while diving off Papua New Guinea. A tuft of red algae caught his eye in a shadowy coral overhang. Then it moved.

He snapped a photo with his film camera. When he processed the film back in Australia, he could make out an eye. "That's when I could make out it was actually an animal. And it didn't exist in any of my books," Harasti, now principal research scientist at the Port Stephens Fisheries Institute, told the Brisbane Times. "I knew then it was a new species."

Then began a 20-year quest to find it again.

Harasti returned to Papua New Guinea six times. Never saw it. Traveled to the Solomon Islands based on reported sightings. Never saw it. Searched throughout the Indo-Pacific for two decades. The fuzzy phantom stayed elusive.

"It was like an underwater Yowie," sporadic sightings cropping up in books and blogs. Some saw it in orange. Others in purple and green. But always shaggy. Always gone before anyone could collect a specimen.

Part of Harasti's obsession stemmed from the fish's likeness to Mr. Snuffleupagus—the galumphing yet elusive mammoth-like muppet introduced as Big Bird's imaginary best friend. A rare, mythical creature the humans didn't believe in. No one ever saw him.

The parallel wasn't lost on Graham Short, a global expert in identifying new syngnathids (the family that includes pipefish, seahorses, and seadragons). He joined the search.

Everything changed in 2020. Friends alerted Harasti they'd spotted the cryptic fish on the Great Barrier Reef. Harasti had a specimen collection license and one last shot.

He and Short flew to Cairns, sped to Saxon Reef. Nothing. Then they dove at a second location.

Fifteen meters deep, within a coral nook covered with red algae, they found two shaggy pipefish: male and female. Enough to describe a new species.

"Graham and I were hugging underwater. I kid you not. We were high-fiving, so excited," Harasti said. "This is something I've been searching for 20 years. It is the holy grail of the ghost pipefish world, it's the rarest of the rare."

Harasti approached Sesame Workshop for their blessing. "They were ecstatic," he said. "This hairy ghost pipefish is so rare, so elusive. Everything matches: the hairy filaments, the long snout. It's a really good replica of Mr. Snuffleupagus underwater and it has that same mystique."

The discovery is crucial for future conservation. You can't protect and save something without a name or proof of existence. And now, thanks to two dedicated scientists and one very patient underwater muppet, Snuffy has his official scientific doppelgänger.

The litter of 10 (yes, TEN!) kittens has fierce-looking parents to come out in these beautiful shades of peach. They gradually "run out of ink," fading closer to a very light orange—almost white—that makes them look like a breathtaking sunset when combined. Mama, who's also a real beauty queen, sure is proud of her new brood, and we can't blame her—they're all perfect in their own way!

Maine Coons come in more than 80 recognized colors and pattern combos, but the base colors are mostly black and red. The rest are genetic and made through the dilution of blue and cream and the inclusion of white.

These cuties can be born with anything from solid all-black, snow-white, and complex silver smoke palettes to Tabby patterns (brown Tabby is the most common), which can be ticked, classic, or mackerel.

The only exception to Maine Coon kittens not recognized by The Cat Fanciers' Association includes pointed color patterns (Siamese, etc.), lavender, and chocolate babies. Also, any of them can have white patches, making them extra unique!

Here's a more comprehensive list of Maine Coon color variations:

• Solid colors come in white, black, red, blue, and cream.

JZ Maine Coons has a ton of beautiful cats, both male and female. This cat, however, blows them all out of the water! Not only is she absolutely massive; she's got the prettiest fur ever. The biggest difference there is the belly: when she's holding them there, you can see that the orange cat's belly is a little fuller and more solid. As for the grey one, her belly goes in a little. She's in shape! Good for her!

Female Maine Coons Grow Than Males

We don't know exactly how old this girl is, but we do know that she's huge. She definitely seems full grown, at least!

Typically, a Maine Coon won't reach full-grown for 3-5 years. They experience the most significant growth within the first 18 months or so, but they continue filling out until then. Female Maine Coons are done growing at the earlier end of the spectrum. They're usually 10-15 pounds, and about 14 inches tall at their largest.

This sweet girl is definitely on the larger end! She can hold her own against the boys in the house, that's for sure!

Nashawaty shared her visit on TikTok and immediately pointed out the necessity of a daily check-in.

"As a catsitter, I definitely have some crazy stories that lead to further reasons of how important it is to always have a cat sitter check in on your cats at a MINIMUM of once a day," the caption advised. "This particular day, I experienced a scary situation that could have easily turned into a fire!"

She entered the home and instantly heard a very loud and continuous sound. The home was abnormally warm, and both cats were clearly stressed out.

"I walked into a client's house and heard a strange noise and found a hairdryer plugged in and somehow TURNED ON in a freak accident in the house!" the story continued. How the hair dryer was turned on is still a mystery, and it understandably upset both cats. One cat was perched on top of a high dresser, obviously distressed by the constant noise and excessive heat. The other cat was also nervous and anxiously paced. Nashawaty immediately turned off the hair dryer and reassured the felines that they were safe.

Keeping appliances plugged in can be a major fire hazard or cause your pets anxiety and potential injury. Before leaving your home with your pets unattended, check the entire house or apartment to make sure everything is unplugged. However, Limazati cautions that this behavior is often misunderstood. “Sometimes when a dog rolls onto his back, it is them saying, ‘Please give me space. I’m not a threat,’” she says. “It can be an early sign of a dog feeling anxious in that moment.”

“When a dog goes out of their way to bring you one of their prized possessions, that’s a pretty big deal,” Limazati says. She notes that for some dogs, this loving behavior can even represent a turning point as they grow more confident in their relationship with their owner.

“This behavior is less about them sharing a toy and more about your dog showing trust and asking to engage with you,” Limazati explains. “It is a clear sign they feel safe with you and trust you enough to interact with something that is special to them.”

3. They Look at You With “Smiling Eyes”

A dog’s eyes can reveal a lot about how they’re feeling, and soft, relaxed eyes are often one of the clearest signs that a dog feels calm, comfortable, and emotionally secure around you. Some trainers even refer to this gentle expression as “smiling eyes.”

“The easiest way to describe smiling eyes is tension-free,” Limazati explains. “A dog who is relaxed will show soft, slow-blinking eyes that do not give the impression of fixation on a specific object.”

Instead of staring intensely or appearing overly alert, relaxed dogs tend to shift their gaze naturally and calmly. Limazati says their eyes move gently rather than locking onto something “as if they are waiting for something to break their trust.”

When dogs display this soft expression, it’s often sign your dog is happy and feels safe in their environment. They know they don’t feel the need to stay on high alert around the people they trust most.

4. Their Favorite Sleep Spot Is Next to You

If you're looking for signs your dog is happy and relaxed, pay attention to their nap routine. Where your dog chooses to sleep can say a lot about how safe and comfortable they feel around you. Because dogs are naturally most vulnerable while resting, they tend to settle down in places where they feel the most secure.

“Dogs are instinctually wired to make sure they lie down to rest or sleep where they feel safest—a place they are certain nothing can happen to them while they are asleep,” Limazati explains.

If your dog regularly curls up beside you on the couch, at your feet, or near your bed, it may be a strong sign of emotional trust and comfort. “Choosing to sleep next to you? That tells you that your dog has chosen you as their safe space to be at their most vulnerable state—asleep,” Limazati says.

Limazati says many dogs struggled with separation after the COVID-19 pandemic because they became used to having people home more often. However, dogs that can self-soothe while alone are often showing a strong sense of trust and comfort in their environment.

“A dog being able to remain calm when you are not with them is absolutely a sign of a dog that trusts you, as it means they trust you will return and they feel safe in the environment and routine you have established for them,” Limazati says.

7. They Have a Relaxed Mouth

A relaxed mouth is often one of the clearest signs of relaxed dog body language and a sign of a dog's emotional wellbeing. Dogs that feel calm, safe and emotionally comfortable will typically hold their mouth slightly open without tension in the jaw, while the tongue and overall facial expression appear soft and neutral.

“When a dog is stressed, you will see more excessive panting, tight lips or jaw tension, sometimes lip licking, and very tense facial expressions,” Limazati explains.

If your dog’s face looks loose and relaxed instead of stiff or overly alert, it can be a strong sign your dog is happy, relaxed, and comfortable in their environment.

8. Their Ears Are in a Neutral Position

A dog’s ear position is one of the most subtle but reliable indicators of relaxed dog body language. While “neutral” can vary depending on the breed, it generally refers to your dog’s natural resting ear position when they feel calm and at ease.

“Pet parents usually know what their dog’s ears look like naturally, and that’s what I would consider neutral,” Limazati says. “When your dog’s ears are more neutral, it usually signals that they are happy, relaxed, and trusting of the current environment and of who is in their space.”

Understanding your dog’s baseline is key, since ear position can sometimes be a more accurate emotional indicator than tail movement. This makes it a helpful tool for reading dog emotional signals in everyday situations.

“The opposite of neutral would be ears pinned back or sharply turned forward,” Limazati explains. “Those positions can signal that your dog is on high alert, or feeling stressed or fearful.” When ears are relaxed and neutral, however, it often reflects a calm, emotionally comfortable dog.

9. Their Tail Is Relaxed

A dog’s tail can offer helpful clues about their emotional state, but it’s important to read it in context rather than assuming all wagging means happiness. Alongside ear position, tail movement is one of the most commonly misunderstood parts of relaxed dog body language.

“The tail, next to the exposed belly, is the other body language of dogs that so often gets misinterpreted,” Limazati says. While many people assume a wagging tail always signals a happy dog, that’s not always the case.

“The key to assessing a wagging tail is how relaxed the tail is,” Limazati explains. “A stiff, fast wagging tail is usually not a happy tail. A slower, relaxed wagging tail, fluid in movement, is more likely to mean a happy, trusting dog.”

Limazati adds that the best way to interpret dog emotional signals is to look at the whole body, not just the tail. A relaxed wag paired with neutral ears or a soft mouth is often a strong sign your dog is happy, relaxed, and comfortable in their environment.

10. They Sigh Deeply

One of the clearest signs of a truly relaxed and emotionally comfortable dog is a deep, audible sigh after settling down. It’s a subtle moment, but it often signals that your dog is letting go of tension and fully entering a calm state.

“There is no pet parent that doesn’t smile when they hear their dog take that slow, deep breath and then slowly let it out in a big, deep sigh,” Limazati says. “This is the biggest sign that your dog feels safe and relaxed. It is your dog releasing tension and transitioning into a calm, relaxed, and content state.”

I'm a fan of whatever Gus does, and having one very vocal cat myself, I know those little sounds all too well. Cats make noises when skipping down the stairs for a few reasons.

Why Dogs Sleep Close to Their Favorite Person and What It Says About Trust and Attachment

Franklin is such a sweet doggy, and you can tell how much he loves his mama, which makes total sense given how he peacefully drifted off to sleep.

According to MyWoof, dogs are pack animals, and they like to be in groups to feel bonded and safe. In the wild, like wolves, dogs sleep together for safety and comfort, so when a pup stays close to their favorite person during naps or sleep, that's them saying how much they trust and love that person.

In the TikTok from @sharing.lov3, Raven was in a car, clearly enjoying her first taste of freedom after finally being chosen.

"POV You are the shelter's longest resident dog and you just got adopted," the onscreen text read as Raven stuck her head out the car window and joyfully felt the wind on her face.

The video shared how Raven previously tried her best to make herself noticeable to potential adopters, but to no avail.

"For 3 months, Raven jumped in her kennel," the story continued as Raven literally hopped in the air from her small kennel run in the hopes of being seen. "Every day she begged for someone to choose her. But little does she know that the day has finally arrived."

Raven's Meet-and-Greet Turned Into Forever Family

The pretty Pittie had a meet-and-greet scheduled with potential adopters who came quite a distance for the face-to-face introduction.

"Someone just drove 3 hours to come and meet her," the text revealed, with clips of Raven getting to know her potential new mom and canine sibling. The friendly fur baby immediately won them over and they adopted her on the spot.
