This Dog Parent Styled Their Pup's Ears With a Dyson Airwrap—and the Internet Voiced Their Concerns

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 9:55am

In a viral video posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), user @willow_wwhimsy appears to be styling their puppy's ears with a Dyson Airwrap, a multi-styler, dryer, and curler. The dog's floppy ears are wrapped around one of the tools' attachments, which is meant to create a blowout hairstyle—on human hair, of course.

The video ends with the dog's ears appearing to be curled inwards, reminiscent of a 1950s hairstyle. How cute! During the video, the pup sits patiently waiting for the result of her "puppy blowout." She doesn't appear to be uncomfortable, afraid, or under any kind of duress. At the end of the video, the dog is wagging her tail enthusiastically and happily as her parent/hairstyler pets her.

Just to clarify !! I did NOT CUrl her ears with anything. Her ears are super long and soft, so when she jumps on the couch they naturally flip like this. Please don't try to style or "fix" your dog's ears. This is a joke video. pic.twitter.com/eZxIRdRH53

— 𝒲𝒾𝓁𝓁𝑜𝓌 𝒲𝒽𝒾𝓂𝓈𝓎 (@willow_wwhimsy) May 6, 2026

And if you're wondering why the dog wasn't uncomfortable, or why anyone would want to curl their puppy's floppy ears, don't worry, it's just a joke. The creator of the video wrote: "I did NOT curl her ears with anything. Her ears are super long and soft, so when she jumps on the couch, they naturally flip like this. Please don't try to style or 'fix' your dog's ears."

The final result of the video, as stated above, was just the puppy's floppy ears naturally curling inwards as she jumped around and played with her parent. No Dyson Airwrap needed.

The Internet's Response

Believe me, the internet had thoughts, and users shared their opinions.

One user wrote, "Sorry, it's not funny, you know some people are not smart, they may see this and think they can try on their own dog. Not funny.” Another user agreed, "But people are stupid and cruel, and you just gave a great example for them to reproduce. Congratulations, you've just hurt a lot of innocent souls." Someone else wrote, "It's not funny at all. It's simply stupid. People will want to do the same thing and burn dogs' ears with a hot iron."

On a more positive note, other users appreciated the joke. "She wants to feel the glamour, too," someone commented. Followed by, "Very beautiful doggo. The curls look beautiful, compliments to her stylist."

"I woke up like this. Those ears are serving natural fluff and a perfect flip! No curling iron needed," someone else added. And finally, "People thought it was serious? OMG!"

Obviously, using a Dyson Airwrap or any styling wand on your dog's ears and body isn't appropriate and can severely harm them. However, pretending to do so, even if just for a joke, can actually be beneficial.

Have you ever been mid-skincare routine when your puppy barks at you, wanting to join in, too? And then you pretend to wash their face and apply eye cream on their undereyes? Well, they just want to be included. They want to be part of your skincare and makeup routines, and even included when you use your Dyson Airwrap. It's OK to pretend to include them in the activity, as long as they're safe. They'll feel very happy and connected to you!

Martial Eagle Proves He’s Equal Parts Protector and Snugglebug

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 9:20am

There are some animals who just pull old movie memories out of storage without asking permission. This Martial Eagle did that to me instantly. The look of him sent me right back to The Rescuers Down Under as a kid, even if I know this isn't the same kind of Eagle. Still, the vibe is there: huge bird, impossible presence, and the kind of face that makes you feel like you're looking at royalty with talons.

And then he cuddles.

That is what makes this clip so amazing.

View this post on Instagram

Oropherion is a male Martial Wagle, and the whole video revolves around this beautiful contradiction: He is clearly protective, clearly watchful, clearly built to hunt, but he also just wants to stay glued to his person like the world’s most majestic Velcro patch. The post makes it clear that this isn't forced or staged for drama. This is him. He leans in, stays close, and acts like personal space is for people with less impressive wingspans.

One commenter called him “an absolutely astonishing, beautiful animal,” which is the correct reaction. You look at a bird like this, and your brain briefly forgets how to form normal thoughts.

What really makes this amazing, though, is the softness.

Not softness in the sense of him looking small or harmless. But the emotional softness is there. He's watchful and clingy at the same time, regal and affectionate, the kind of animal who looks like he should be perched on a mountain and instead seems deeply invested in being close to one specific human.

That contrast is catnip for the internet.

Also, my dog Lola would lose her mind seeing a bird that big. She would absolutely believe she had been called to handle the situation personally, and it would go about as well as most of her plans involving larger animals.

People expect awe from a Martial Eagle. They expect size, beauty, intensity. They don't expect the snugglebug angle. So when it shows up, it feels bigger than cute. It feels intimate. Like getting to see a side of a creature most of us will never get anywhere near.

That's the sweet spot.

Big power. Bigger attachment issues.

Why Martial Eagles Look So Majestic up Close

Martial Eagles are striking because they really are enormous, powerful birds. The National Aviary describes them as a large African Eagle found in open habitats such as savannas, steppes, and shrublands, and notes that they are among the strongest Eagle species in Africa.

That doesn't explain Oropherion’s clingy side on its own, but it does explain why the video feels so visually overwhelming. When a bird that impressive also chooses closeness, the emotional impact doubles.

Some animals are majestic from a distance. Oropherion apparently prefers to be majestic directly in your lap.

C&S Suet cakes are make of healthy fats and designed to appeal to berry-eating and nut-eating birds, like blue jays, bluebirds, tanagers, thrushes, robins, and more. Buyers rate these a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars, noting that they even attract woodpeckers!

"The birds absolutely love this suet!!" writes one buyer. "It attracts a wild variety and keeps them coming back all day."

Goldendoodle's Birthday Surprise Ends With the Sweetest 'Thank You'

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 8:55am

Every year that we're blessed to have the privilege of a dog's companionship is worth celebrating. It becomes even more important the older they get because we can't know how long they'll stay.

Sampson, the Goldendoodle, just turned 10, and the morning of his birthday, he was thrilled to find the surprise Dad left before work. But it's his precious way of saying "thank you" that has us in tears.

@sampson_the_dood

The howl at the end 🥹 #cutedog

♬ Little Things - Adrián Berenguer

If you asked me how many times I've watched the sweet clip shared by @sampson_the_dood, I'd have to plead the fifth! Dad, who left for work early, lining up all those toys for the birthday boy to find, is top-tier internet material! He couldn't wait to sniff them all out to figure out which he loved the most.

There could never be enough videos like this that show how grateful dogs are for everything, and Sampson shows why. That adorable howl at the end was his way of saying "thank you," as if he doesn't realize he's the light of Mom and Dad's life (and many of yours, too)!

As one of the web's most ball-obsessed pups, Sampson is no stranger to having fun. But now that the senior Goldendoodle is in the double digits, he's begun to explore new activities.

Though this good boy is obsessed with every ball in sight, Dad had another surprise: a herding ball! Honestly, I've never "herd" of one of these—and my Corgi would love it—but watch and see how Sampson handles this one.

@sampson_the_dood

Safe to say herding dog is not on his resume 😭 #funnydogs

Sampson's surprise is so sweet because it's all about his personality, which is a fun-loving, playful, and joyous cutie-pie! To make your pup feel just as special, it could be as easy as:

  • Baking a dog-friendly "cake"
  • Throwing a small party with their dog friends
  • Making them the star of the day
  • Taking them for a pup cup
  • Giving them extra time and attention
  • Taking them to the pet store to pick out a toy
  • Setting out a bunch of toys as Sampson's dad did

It doesn't have to be complicated to show your pup some birthday love. They're just happy to be with us and ask for nothing in return—and that's exactly why they deserve the world.

DIY Pet Museum Frame Is the Heartwarming Home Decor Trend We Needed

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 8:48am

The first time you look at this DIY project, you might mistake it for an ordinary shadow box frame. But look closely, and you will notice the tiny gallery lights, the miniature framed pet portraits, and the little figurines standing inside like museum visitors admiring some of the most spectacular artwork.

And it is hard not to bust a smile. In a YouTube video, DIY enthusiast Brooklyn Bshowed how she transformed a basic eight-by-10-inch shadow box into a tiny pet-themed museum. She included her own dog, as well as some of the pets of her family and friends.

For pet parents who treat their animals like family, this DIY idea is a must-have.

How to Make This DIY Pet Display

First, you need an eight-by-10-inch shadow box frame, patterned scrapbook paper, hot glue, miniature-style frames, printed pet photos, battery-powered spotlights, and some figurines.

The process is easy and will take you several minutes. Watch the video closely, and by the third minute, the project is complete.

Here is a tip: test the layout before attaching everything, giving you a better idea of how the final display will look. Make sure it is balanced, not crowded.

A Personal Project

Pet keepsakes have been around for a while. People frame photos of their dogs and cats all the time. However, the difference here is that it turns memories into something interactive and playful. When you add museum guests, your pet's portraits become works of art.

And you can put this museum anywhere in your home, enriching your decor. Pets are now part of the emotional architecture of our home. They shape our routine and day. Their faces become part of our lives.

This project captures that.

Your Chance for a Special Gift

Mother's Day may have passed, but this DIY pet museum can still make an excellent year-round gift, including National Best Friend Day on June 8, National Dog Day on August 26, and National Cat Day on October 29.

All of these are the perfect excuse to celebrate pet parents in your life. Or to make one for yourself. There is a special kind of magic in a gift that acknowledges pets as our family members.

Honestly, the DIY project would be a perfect memorial gift for someone grieving the loss of a pet.

Just picture this piece of art sitting on a bookshelf, glowing softly at night while guests come in and check every tiny framed face. You can already think of the stories they will talk about the pets in the pictures. The project gives these stories a permanent home.

Ranchers Finally Realized Why This Cattle Dog Kept Covering the Little Calf in Dirt

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 8:20am

The little calf in this video is just sleeping quietly near the fence while one extremely determined Cattle Dog repeatedly attempts to solve what she clearly believes is a major safety issue.

Her solution? Covering the baby in dirt until he is properly hidden from the world.

@scccattleco

This is the second time she has tried bury this calf! #ranchlife #Cows #herefordcattle #frenchieweiner @teagan stlouis @Nicki

♬ Diggin' Up Bones - Randy Travis

Shared by TikTok user @scccattleco, we see an adorable farm clip of a Cattle Dog carefully using her nose to push dirt over the tiny calf while the confused baby calmly stands there accepting his fate.

The caption explained, “This is the second time she has tried to bury this calf!”

Related: Cattle Dog Shepherd Mix’s Long Snoot Makes Him Look Like a Ghost Anteater

And honestly, the dog looks incredibly serious about the entire mission.

There is no roughness or aggression at all. Instead, she gently nudges dirt toward the calf with the focused energy of someone trying very hard to protect something important.

People in the Comments Recognized the Behavior as Protective Instinct, Not Strange Behavior:

• “I raise cattle and working dogs. This dog is protecting the calf.”
• “Dogs hide things to keep them safe. She is just babysitting, and this is how she thinks the calf is safe.”
• “She’s not the stepmom, she’s the mom that stepped up.”
• “More than likely, it’s for a couple of reasons. She’s protecting him as a newborn, and she’s covering scent to prevent predators.”
• “She is hiding her favorite one.”
• “She is keeping that baby safe. What a good Cattle Dog.”

Others explained that some dogs instinctively try to hide vulnerable newborn animals, similar to how mother cows often keep calves hidden in tall grass after birth.

“In rare cases, dogs may try to ‘hide’ the scent of a newborn to protect the herd from predators.”

Honestly, the entire thing feels strangely emotional because the pup so clearly believes she has been assigned babysitting duties and intends to take them very seriously.

Our Pomeranian, Kingston, once tried to “protect” a potato by barking at it for 20 minutes, so this Cattle Dog is operating on a significantly more advanced level.

Why Do Herding Dogs Become So Protective of Farm Animals? @juleshomestead

Watch our livestock guardian dog do his job protecting our newly born baby goats #lgd #huckthelgd #livestockguardiandog #maremma #maremmano #maremmasheepdog #workingdog #farmdog #homestead

♬ Simply The Best - Billianne

Herding and working dogs are often bred to stay alert around livestock and may naturally develop protective instincts toward vulnerable animals, such as newborn calves, lambs, or goats.

Some Working Dogs May:

• Stay close to newborn animals
• Try to guard or “hide” babies
• Monitor unfamiliar movements nearby
React strongly to possible threats
• Mimic maternal, protective behavior
• Form close bonds with livestock

Experts note that while behaviors vary between dogs, many farm dogs become deeply attached to the animals they help protect every day.

And judging by this determined little Cattle Dog, at least one baby calf currently has a very committed dirt-based security system.

Newborn Foal Meets the Herd and Acts Like a True VIP

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 7:55am

Kids grow up fast, but for newborn horses, it happens even quicker. For a stunning mare named Elsa, with a flawless cream-colored coat at JS2 Ranch in Gainesville, Texas, her 48-hour-old foal is already proving just how quickly these little ones come into their own.

After bringing her newborn out to the pear orchard to feed, Elsa decided it was time for his first introduction to the herd. While some animals might be a little hesitant in a moment like that, this beautiful light-colored foal was anything but shy.

Watch him greet the herd with surprising confidence in this Instagram reel from @js2_ranch, posted May 9:

At just 2 days old, the unnamed foal is already moving like he owns the place. He trots right past the other horses, his cream-colored coat catching the sunlight as he goes, as if he knows he has something to show off.

Even one of the other moms, Prudence, seems instantly drawn to him and gets close enough that she almost looks ready to claim him as her own. But Elsa stays nearby, keeping a watchful eye as her baby explores.

That doesn’t slow him down much.

With those long, fast legs, he’s already darting around the pasture, weaving between the herd, and testing just how far he can go before circling back. He even gives his mom a bit of a chase, showing just how much energy he has this early on.

It’s a moment that makes it clear he’s going to keep her busy.

Update on Emotionally Shut-Down Cat Returned to Shelter After 6 Years Has People in Tears

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 7:10am

Stella the Calico mix cat was recently returned to the NAWS Humane Society six years after adoption and understandably went into deep despair. The sweet feline was withdrawn and tried to hide from anyone who attempted to comfort her. Stella also has eyelid agenesis, a rare condition in which a cat is born with some or all of its upper eyelid missing, making adoption more of a challenge.

When Stella's story was posted on social media, word spread about the pretty kitty's sad situation. Thanks to an outpouring of love from Stella's newfound fan base, she has hope for a better future.

@franflight

STELLA UPDATE! You guys 😭 Stella received SO many wonderful adoption applications for her. The amount of people willing to open their heart and home to her was truly incredible to see. If you shared her story, if you commented on the post, or even just liked her video you directly impacted Stella to find her forever home. There are so many wonderful families that are currently being vetted and she will be on her way to her forever home once she sees the eye specialist. Stella has a tentative appointment next Wednesday to evaluate both of her eyes, she currently is blind in her right eye and the left eye has been causing her some discomfort. We are hoping to know more after the appointment, but we are expecting she will need either surgery to remove one or both of her eyes to relieve her of discomfort. 😭 Once i have more updates I will definitely be posting them, but for now I wanted you all to know that Stella is doing wonderfully and will be going home in the near future. 😭🤍🫂🥹 I am still going through my messages and e-mails and will try my best to reply to all of them shortly, and if you did submit an adoption application you should have received an e-mail so please check your spam folders. 🥹 I love love LOVE you all. When I was traveling I truly missed this community and the magic it brings. I’m so thankful for all of you and thankful to have such amazing people supporting these animals day in and day out. I’m sending you guys all of my love as always. 😭🤍🫂 #adopt #adoptdontshop #cat #catsoftiktok #catlover

The TikTok from @franflight revealed how Stella is improving and starting to let her guard down.

"She's opening up and out of her shell," the onscreen text shared as Stella nuzzled a NAWS staff member. "She's finally eating. She's wanting to play."

With the help of followers sharing her story, Stella is now in demand for adoption.

"Stella received SO many wonderful adoption applications for her," the caption explained. "The amount of people willing to open their hearts and homes to her was truly incredible to see. If you shared her story, if you commented on the post, or even just liked her video, you directly impacted Stella to find her forever home."

Stella Will Get Clearance After Medical Care

NAWS is currently vetting families to find the best match for Stella. The feline fur baby has an upcoming eye evaluation due to her eyelid agenesis, where a decision will be made on surgery.

"She is currently blind in her right eye, and the left eye has been causing her some discomfort," the caption shared. "We are hoping to know more after the appointment, but we are expecting she will need surgery to remove one or both of her eyes to relieve her of discomfort."

Tiny Chihuahua Mix Born Without Front Paws Finally Gets To Run Like Every Other Puppy

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 6:55am

Lily may be tiny, but the second she started zooming around in her little pink wheels, it became very obvious this puppy has absolutely no intention of letting anything slow her down.

The sweet Chihuahua mix, who was born without front paws, is making people emotional online as she learns how to run and play with her brand-new mobility cart.

@crurescue

And she’s off🦽🦽🐾🐾🥰🥰 Lily is getting the hang of it. It is a process and we will continue to tweak it so she is comfortable and steady in her wheels 💗

♬ original sound - Cleft Rescue Unit

The heartwarming clip was shared by TikTok user @crurescue, and it shows Lily taking her first wobbly little runs while supported by a pink wheelchair harness that helps lift her front half as she moves.

The rescue explained in the caption, “Lily is taking her first steps with her new mobility cart, and she’s already getting the hang of it!”

Related: Paralyzed Bunny’s Beach Day in His Wheelchair Is Pure Joy

They also noted that the adjustment process takes patience while they continue tweaking the setup to help Lily feel comfortable and steady in her new wheels.

Even so, the puppy already looks absolutely thrilled to finally move around more freely.

At Different Points in the Clip:

• Lily zooms happily across the ground
• Her tiny tail wags nonstop
• She bounces excitedly in her wheels
• She keeps trying again every time she stumbles
• She looks genuinely excited to keep moving

People in the Comments Immediately Started Cheering Her On:

• “Go, Lily, go!”
• “She’s doing such a great job.”
• “She is absolutely adorable.”
• “Look at how excited she is to be able to run like every other puppy.”
• “Nothing can stop this little lady now.”
• “Oh, I can’t WAIT 'til she gets the hang of zoomies.”
• “What a brave little champion.”

Honestly, one of the sweetest parts is how determined Lily seems despite still learning. She doesn't appear frustrated or scared. She just looks excited that the world suddenly became bigger and easier to explore.

Meanwhile, my Pomeranian, Kingston, trips over absolutely nothing several times a week and still acts deeply offended every single time, so Lily honestly has better resilience than most of us.

Can Dogs Adapt to Mobility Carts?

Many dogs adapt surprisingly well to mobility carts and wheelchairs, especially when introduced gradually with positive reinforcement and supervision. Mobility devices can help dogs with limb differences, injuries, paralysis, or mobility challenges stay active and independent.

Helpful Adjustment Tips Often Include:

• Short, supervised practice sessions
• Positive reinforcement and treats
• Proper cart fitting and adjustments
• Monitoring for soreness or fatigue
• Allowing dogs to move at their own pace
• Keeping experiences positive and encouraging

While every pup adjusts differently, many eventually learn to run, play, and even develop full-speed zoomies once they gain confidence in their wheels.

5 Flowers Hummingbirds Avoid

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 6:10am

It’s always exciting when you spot a hummingbird flying around, but if it seems like they are in your neighborhood, just not your garden, you may be wondering why hummingbirds aren't visiting your yard? Experts say that there are a variety of potential causes. The biggest reason may be that you planted flowers that hummingbirds avoid. After all, not all plants are seen as food to these tiny creatures and therefore they play a role in how inviting your space feels to them.

In fact, these adorable birds visit hundreds of blossoms each day to meet their energy needs, which means your flower choices can have a bigger impact than you might expect and can make a surprising difference in how often they appear. “Hummingbirds are highly specialized nectar feeders,” explains Christopher J. Clark, PhD, a hummingbird researcher and associate professor at the University of California. “They depend on consistent access to energy-rich flowers in gardens.”

Luckily, there are plenty of easy changes you can make this summer to make your yard more hummingbird-friendly. So which flowers do hummingbirds not like? Discover which ones experts say to avoid planting and see what simple changes you can make to start seeing more of these tiny, magical visitors. Before you know it, you’ll know the secret to attract hummingbirds and might even find yourself greeted by a swarm of these enchanting little guests.

Plants Hummingbirds Tend to Avoid—and Why A hummingbird avoiding a garden with flowers its not attracted to.

Getty Images Arden Mai

Seeing how hummingbirds are migrating back to North America right now, it's good to know which common garden flowers are not be as appealing to them as you might think. One of the biggest factors is flower shape, since it affects how easily these birds can access nectar while feeding.

Heather Kirk-Ballard, PhD, assistant professor and extension specialist in sustainable urban landscapes at the University of Georgia, explains that hummingbirds are strongly drawn to flower structures that allow quick, efficient feeding. So, what flowers don't attract hummingbirds? Blooms that are too shallow, too dense, or poorly shaped may be passed over in favor of easier option.

Here are five common flowers that hummingbirds don't like, according to experts.

Roses Hummingbirds aren't attrcted to roses.

Getty Images Norman Posselt

When it comes to flowers that repel hummingbirds, roses are one. Therefore, if you have lots of these pretty plants in your garden, they may be the reason hummingbirds aren’t coming to your yard.

"Roses lack the tubular shape hummingbirds prefer and may have limited accessible nectar,” says Kirk-Ballard. Because of this, these cute creatures are less likely to rely on them as a food source compared to nectar-rich, tube-shaped blooms.

Irises Irises are a flower that won't attract hummingbirds to your garden.

Getty Images Steve Clancy Photography

Another flower that hummingbirds dislike are Irises, which are pretty blue and purple plants. “The structure of an iris is not ideal for hummingbird feeding,” Kirk-Ballard explains. While visually striking, irises don’t provide the deep nectar access hummingbirds typically seek

Daisies Daisies are one of the worst flowers to plant if you want to attract hummingbirds.

Getty Images SimpleImages

Do hummingbirds like daisies? Sadly, they don't. If you want to attract more hummingbirds to your yard, experts say to skip planting these as they are a plant hummingbirds avoid. “Open, flat flowers like daisies are better suited for bees and butterflies, not hummingbirds,” Kirk-Ballard notes. "Their wide, exposed shape makes them less efficient for hummingbird feeding behavior."

Petunias Petunia flower gardens won't attract hummingbirds.

Getty Images George Pachantouris

Want more hummingbirds in your garden? These flowers may be keeping them away. “Many modern hybrids, like petunias, produce less nectar,” Kirk-Ballard says. As a result, these may not consistently attract hummingbirds despite their popularity in gardens.

Pansies Even though they are vibrant, hummingbirds tend to avoid gardens with pansies.

Getty Images Photo by Jonas Adner

One garden mistake that keeps hummingbirds away is planting pansies as they offer low nectar production and are a flower structure that doesn’t align well with hummingbird feeding preferences. As a result, Kirk-Ballard notes they are simply not a strong match for attracting these tiny birds.

Best Flowers to Attract Hummingbirds to Your Yard

What flowers attract hummingbirds? To create a more hummingbird-friendly garden, focus on blooms that match their feeding style as these small birds are attracted to bright, tubular flowers. These plants are known to support pollinators and help encourage more frequent hummingbird visits.

"A good rule of thumb is to focus on plants that produce a lot of nectar," explains Clark. "Ultimately, though, which flowers are 'best' depends on what part of the country you are in."

Annette Cormany, master gardener coordinator and horticulture educator at University of Maryland Extension, agrees and adds that hummingbirds rely heavily on nectar sources to sustain their energy needs. “Each hummingbird needs nectar from about 1,000 blossoms a day to survive,” she says. “Having those in your garden matters to them”

What are nectar-rich flowers? There are actually a variety you can choose from. Below are some expert-suggested ones that hummingbirds like.

  • Bee balm
  • Salvia
  • Coral bells
  • Fuchsia
  • Phlox
  • Coral honeysuckle
  • Foxglove beardtongue
  • Wild bergamot
  • Cardinal flower
  • Native columbine
Colors and Flower Shapes Hummingbirds Prefer A hummingbird attracted to a red tubular flower in a garden..

Hummingbirds are especially attracted to bright flowers. So, what color of flower attracts hummingbirds the most? Red is often most effective, but they will also visit orange, pink, purple and yellow blooms. Though, experts say green flowers are rarely attractive to hummingbirds.

The hue isn't the only thing that determines if these pretty birds will come to your yard or not. “The shape matters as much as color,” Clark explains. “Long tubular flowers help guide hummingbirds to nectar while limiting access for some insects.”

How to Make Your Garden More Hummingbird-Friendly

Many gardeners wonder why hummingbirds aren’t visiting their yard, even when they’ve planted flowers meant to attract them. The truth is, a hummingbird-friendly garden isn’t just about blooms—it’s also about how your space is set up. Small details in your yard could be keeping hummingbirds away without you realizing it.

In fact, adding a few simple features can make your yard feel more welcoming and encourage more frequent visits. “Nectar from flower sources provides natural food, but hummingbird feeders can supplement their diet,” Cormany says. She explains you can dissolve one part sugar in four parts water to create your own hummingbird “nectar."

Natural shelter is another key factor. “Heavily wooded areas provide protein options in the form of insects and also provide cover and shade,” Humm-Beatty says.

Water features can also make a big difference. Instead of a traditional birdbath, Cormany points out a gentle mister or fountain dripper is often more appealing and may encourage more regular visits.

Experts also warn that chemical use in gardens may discourage hummingbirds entirely "Hummingbirds are very sensitive to chemicals,” she says. “Control pests organically and avoid chemicals to help hummingbirds and other wildlife.”

8 Words Dogs Love Hearing, According to Trainers

Sat, 05/16/2026 - 5:10am

Dogs may not understand human language the way we do, but they are incredibly good at learning which sounds consistently lead to good things—and that’s exactly why there are certain words dogs love hearing in their everyday lives. However, not all pet parents know what those terms and phrases are. To help you out, we rounded up 8 words dogs love to hear, according to a trainer.

And while every dog is different, trainers say there are a handful of everyday words that tend to stand out more than others—each tied to moments dogs naturally love. "Dogs like certain words more than others, usually because of their associations or the context in which they are spoken," says Annie-Mae Levy, CFBA, a professional dog trainer at Woofz, "Dogs are amazing at pattern recognition, so they will absolutely pick up on which words are more likely to lead to positive outcomes that they enjoy than others, which mean nothing to them or even something negative."

How do you know which words and phrases make your dog happy when you say them? Levy says you can look for clues about which words your dog adores. "When a dog loves a certain word, they will show loose body language, wag their tails, approach you and perhaps even appear to become excitable depending on their perception of what the word means," Levy shares.

Not sure where to start or how to talk to your dog? Levy gives you a leg up by sharing eight words dogs love hearing. After all, sometimes knowng what to say to your dog can be tricky, especially since dogs can’t communicate by speaking or talk to express how they feel.

How Many Words Do Dogs Understand? A dog who is excited hearing a word it loves.

Getty Images AJ_Watt

When it comes to dog communication, the amount of words a pup can understand varies from dog to dog. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, dogs can understand as few as 15 words to over 200, which means well-trained dogs are on the same level as a two-year-old toddler.

Through repetition, tone of voice, and experience, dogs begin to pick up on specific dog communication cues that signal something positive is about to happen. Whether it’s play, food, walks, or attention, they quickly learn to associate familiar words with outcomes they enjoy. Over time, these become some of the words dogs understand best and the words dogs like hearing, not because of the language itself, but because of the pattern behind it.

8 Words Dogs Love Hearing

There are some words dogs love hearing, but why your pup's tail wags at 100 miles per hour upon hearing them may remain a mystery to you. Below, Levy takes you inside your pup's mind to let you know what they're thinking when these simple words roll off your tongue and why they like these words so much.

1. Their name

Very little gets your dog's heart pumping with excitement more than their name. So, when it comes to words dogs understand best and like hearng, their name is usually at the top of the list. It’s one of the most important dog training words because it works as a direct dog communication signal that something is meant specifically for them.

"A dog's name indicates that something is about to involve them, as we will usually say their name to get their attention," Levy says. "For many dogs, this will trigger excitement and positive feelings."

Saying your dog's name also strengthens dog-human bonding, reinforces focus and helps create reliable behavior cues that make everyday communication between dogs and their humans smoother and more meaningful.

2. "Treat"

You're likely not surprised to see "treat" among the words dogs love hearing. In fact, just rustling the bag will likely make your dog happy.

"Many dogs recognize the word 'treat' as something we say just before we give them an extra tasty snack," Levy says. "This is for dogs with a higher food drive, which can trigger immediate attention and very positive feelings. In fact, many owners use this to get their dog's attention when they’re being ignored."

3. "Leash"

What's a word dogs love hearing? Levy says saying the word "leash" makes your dog feel happy because they know it means you're preparing to go out for a walk.

"If 'leash' is said in this context enough times, it will become associated with the excitement of going out for a walk and thus becomes a word that a dog will love," Levy reports.

4. "Hello"

For many dogs, “hello” isn’t just a greeting—it can become one of those words dogs love hearing because it often marks the start of something happening around them.

"Most of our dogs will first hear us saying ‘hello’ when greeting someone on a dog walk or at the front door," Levy notes. "For a social dog who likes strangers, this word can cause lots of excitement, as historically, it's probably led to some attention from a new person."

Over time, dogs begin to recognize patterns in everyday speech, which is why simple dog training words like “hello” can become meaningful. While it’s not a command, it can still act as a subtle signal that something new, interesting, or social is about to happen, especially for outgoing, people-loving pups.

5. "Yay"

Among the words dogs love hearing, “yay!” stands out as a simple but powerful dog communication cue that instantly signals happiness, praise and rewards.

"If you tend to celebrate with your dog and exclaim ‘yay!’ when they get something right or before praising them with food or affection, then this word can become one that they love as it's known to precede good things," Levy notes.

For many dogs, “yay!” becomes more than just a sound, it turns into one of those words dogs understand best as a clear promise of praise, love, and positive experiences.

6. "Park"

If you’re wondering what words dogs understand best, trainers say “park” is a classic example, especially for dogs who love their walks. It’s one of those simple dog training words that quickly becomes meaningful through routine and positive reinforcement for dogs.

Levy shares that many dogs become visibly excited when they hear the word “park,” often barking, spinning, or rushing to the door as soon as it’s said. “They know that they’re about to go outside,” she explains. “This word only needs to be used a few times before a walk for it to become one of their favorite words dogs love hearing.”

7. "Car"

Not all dogs react the same way to the word “car,” but for many pups it becomes one of those words dogs love hearing when it’s consistently linked to positive experiences. Dog trainers say that through positive reinforcement for dogs, pets quickly learn to associate certain words with outcomes they enjoy, like walks, parks, or quality time with their humans.

Levy explains that for some dogs, especially those who already enjoy travel, “car” becomes a powerful dog communication cue. "Some dogs love the car as it signifies extra special walks or days out with their humans," Levy raves. "If you tend to say ‘car’ to your dog just before trips that they enjoy, this will quickly be a word that they recognize and love."

Over time, simple dog training words like “car” can build anticipation, strengthen dog bonding, and create happy emotional associations. For many dogs, it’s not just a word, it’s a signal that something fun, rewarding and full of adventure is about to happen

8. "Fetch"

Not all dogs are obsessed with fetch, but for many playful pups, it’s one of the most exciting words they can hear. Dog trainers say the word “fetch” often creates instant excitement because dogs associate it with fun, exercise, rewards, and bonding time with their humans.

"For dogs who like to retrieve—especially those bred for this job, such as Labradors and Spaniels—the word ‘fetch’ can trigger a huge surge in dopamine as they know they're about to do their favorite thing," Levy explains.

What Are the Best Ways to Communicate with Dogs?

Dogs may not understand every word pet parents say, but they’re experts at reading people's tone, expressions and energy. Because of this, the best way to communicate with dogs is through simple, loving words paired with consistency and positive experiences. Trainers say dogs especially respond to cheerful praise, gentle body language, and routines they can trust. Whether it’s saying “good boy,” “walk,” or “treat,” those happy little words become special because they’re connected to love, comfort, playtime and attention from their favorite human.

Cat on Morning Bird Watch Duty Has Dramatic Reaction to Dad’s Interruption

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 8:20pm

Cats are notorious for having a variety of moods that can change in an instant, and honestly, that's why we love them. Some are sugary sweet, others are full-on Sour Patch Kids, but the majority have the ability to swing from one emotion to another in the blink of an eye. It's never clearer than when you interrupt them doing something they'd rather do alone.

Sasha is the queen of this, and even by cat standards, she's a little spicier than most. Her morning bird-watching routine is something she gets amped up about if Dad so much as enters her vicinity—and she's not afraid to scold him when he does!

@brblegday

Sasha and I love watching the birds in the morning. #catsoftiktok #petlover

♬ original sound - brblegday

The moody, dramatic, and sassy kitty doesn't like it when Dad interrupts her hobby. She also loathes it when he showers her with compliments like calling her pretty because it's not going to change her mind. Actually, she really doesn't like much and would prefer if we all see ourselves out (side note: I'm starting to think I'm Sasha).

Two things can be true at once: Sasha is very pretty, even if hearing it makes her rage. Sure, it's a bonkers reaction, but that's her prerogative. And Dad's audacity—while she's clearly busy and hasn't had her coffee yet—also makes her rage. She's a simple girl with big, spicy feelings, and she wants to rage and watch birds in peace and nothing else (also relatable)!

Hundreds of @brblegday's fans also felt very seen. Sasha's hissy greeting is something many of us would like to do (or do already)! But don't worry about this seemingly unhappy girl because even with all that attitude, she's very loved—and angry about it all!

After further investigation, Dad isn't Sasha's "primary servant," which explains a lot. He's the spare human, so he hasn't earned any purrs or biscuit-making moments. Here's proof that the annoyed catcan be sweet if she really wants to be:

♬ original sound - brblegday The Real Reason Cats Hiss—And It's Not What You Think

Believe it or not, cats don't always hiss as an act of aggression. If they're interrupted while doing something that takes concentration, a hiss is their natural defense as a way of saying they feel annoyed, threatened, or need space. Fear and stress can be a part of it, but not necessarily.

As Dr. Jo Cornet, DVM, tells PetMD, hissing is a normal part of feline behavior but may take some investigation to rule out pain or illness. Most of the time, this little warning is them saying "back off," and in Sasha's case, we hear her loud and clear!

Mini Horse Joins Mom's Dance Break and Completely Steals the Show

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 7:20pm

Home renovation content is usually dust, ladders, and somebody muttering about trim.

This one has all of that, plus a Mini Horse with stage presence.

The video opens in a room that is clearly mid-project, the kind of space where normal people would be thinking about paint samples and tool cleanup. Instead, the music kicks in, Mom starts dancing, and Ted, the Mini Horse, decides this is now a joint performance. Not a cameo. Not a polite little background bop. A full emotional contribution.

View this post on Instagram

And honestly, Ted understands the assignment faster than most humans do.

The video hints that this all happens when a favorite song comes on, and you can feel that immediately. There's no hesitation, no “should we?” energy. This is the kind of spontaneous house dance break that starts because one good song hits, and suddenly dignity is no longer part of the plan. Ted, apparently, has no interest in being reined in either, which is perfect, because the whole charm of the clip is how loose and happy it feels.

No polishing. No choreography. Just joy.

Ted isn't just standing there while his person dances around him. He's in it. He has that perfect Mini Horse mix of curiosity, confidence, and tiny man energy that makes every move feel bigger than it is. He completely steals the show without seeming like he's trying, which is, unfortunately, the most powerful form of charisma.

And the setting somehow makes it even better. The unfinished room, the casual chaos, the everyday mess of life still happening around them, all of it gives the video this warm, lived-in feeling. It's not some staged barn photo shoot with matching bandanas and a sunset. It's just a person and a tiny horse deciding that a renovation zone can also be a dance floor.

View this post on Instagram

Buried under the joke is a genuinely good reminder: Life gets heavy and weird and busy, and sometimes the smartest thing you can do is dance around the house with whoever is willing to match your energy. In this case, that just happens to be a Mini Horse named Ted with excellent instincts and no concern for looking cool.

Which, frankly, makes him cooler.

Also, there's something very funny about a Mini Horse participating in a music moment with the same vibe as a friend who hears the opening bars of a favorite song and immediately becomes impossible to manage. Ted has that exact energy. One beat in, and he's spiritually on tour.

By the end of the clip, the renovation doesn't matter, the room doesn't matter, and honestly, even the original reason for filming barely matters. What matters is that for a few seconds, everybody in the room chose fun.

Ted just happened to be the best at it.

How To Keep Mini Horses Happy Indoors and Enriched

Mini Horses are smart, social, and easily bored, which means a lot of their happiness comes from interaction, novelty, and safe enrichment. If a Mini Horse enjoys being around people, movement, and routines, little moments like music, attention, and supervised indoor hangouts can become part of what keeps life interesting.

So yes, this dance break is adorable. But it also tracks. Animals who feel secure, engaged, and included usually find very funny ways to show it. Ted didn't interrupt a renovation. Ted improved it.

Pomeranian Gets Stuck in Modern Art Display and the Viral Video Is Hilarious

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 6:55pm

Well, this is something you don't see every day.

A Pomeranianstuck in a modern art display was caught on video, and it's going viral. The hilarious moment is almost too perfect to be real.

The fluffy pup named Keanu accidentally becoming part of an outdoor art installation makes for pure comedy gold, and viewers can't get enough of this hilarious situation.

@keanuthepompom

♬ original sound - Keanu the Pomeranian

Don't you hate it when that happens?

The headbutt against the wall is particularly precious and hilarious; we know Keanu is OK!

How This Pomeranian Accidentally Became Modern Art

So how did this happen?

Poor Keanu, the Pomeranian, thought he was just on a walk outside and then found himself stuck in a modern art display!

It did make for a cool visual, though!

Many outdoor art installations allow dogs to come by, and unfortunately, this one was just a bit confusing to the little guy.

Because it was transparent pink glass, he may have thought he could walk through it, which is why he bumped his head and couldn't figure out where the exit was.

Also, dogs don't see color in the same way we do.

Related: Nobody Was Prepared for Who This Shy Little Pomeranian Chose as a Best Friend

They can mainly distinguish blue and yellow, but red and green appear more like shades of gray, brown, or dull yellow, so that may have also contributed to Keanu's confusion.

The comments on the video were quite funny, as you can imagine:

"Just a puffball of confusion," one person wrote.

"So from Kiki's POV, he was stuck behind an invisible force field," another wrote.

And my personal favorite: "Please don’t touch the art. I am the art."

It looks like from other videos on his account, Keanu loves to be outside, usually in a cozy little bag.

He's also the biggest fan of his mom.

This Pomeranian just needs to stay away from modern art displays!

Golden Retriever-Shepherd Mix Looks Like a Mozzarella Stick With Tiny Legs

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 6:00pm

I love all dogs. Every single dog in the world deserves a safe and loving home, and every dog is adorable in my eyes. However, I do have a few soft spots when it comes to breeds: Boston Terriers, which I have 3 of, and anything mixed with a Corgi.

Recently, there was a Golden Retriever-Corgi mix who absolutely won everyone's hearts. He's just so short and little... That, coupled with his golden-brown coat, makes him look like a toasty mozzarella stick:

@bradythegoldenpup

morning Toast

♬ Opening (Spirit of Adventure) - Andrea Datzman & Curtis Green

Toast the Golden Pup is actually the cutest dog I've ever seen! He's a rescue, and though he looks like a puppy, he's full-grown! When they got him, they had no idea what breeds he was mixed with, though everybody was sure he was part Corgi.

They did a DNA test on him, and ultimately, they learned that he's a mix of several breeds, including:

Of all of the breeds he's mixed with, Golden Retriever is actually one of the lowest percentages: about 15%. Just looking at him, though, he looks like a Golden Retriever with Corgi legs!

Related: Super Rare Newfoundland-Corgi Mix Looks Like a Cookies and Cream Bear Cub

He also had a brother, who was a Golden Retriever named Brady. We're not sure if Brady was a rescue, too, but he was a senior boy, happily living his best life. That is, until Toast started causing all of that chaos:

@bradythegoldenpup

The eyebrows get angrier as he realizes it’s time 🛁

♬ original sound - malia & toast

I love his angry eyebrows. Unfortunately for Toast, Brady did pass away last month. Before he passed, though, he made sure to show Toast the ropes... Toast will carry on hating bath time enough for both of them.

Golden Retriever Mixes Are Great Dogs

One thing about a Golden Retriever mix: they're going to inherit some Golden Retriever traits, and that's amazing. Golden Retrievers are one of the sweetest and silliest dog breeds on the planet!

Golden Retriever running through a field.

If you want a Golden Retriever mix, especially one who's mixed with a breed like the Australian Shepherd, you need to prepare. These dogs need:

  • Frequent exercise.
  • A lot of interaction with you.
  • A balanced (and often pretty expensive) diet.

Golden Retriever mixes are pretty common in rescues, so if you really do want one, they won't be too hard to find. Personally, I need one who looks just like Toast!

Senior German Shepherd Proves He's Still a Fighter After Overcoming Serious Health Scare

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 5:48pm

There is a specific kind of anxiety that comes with finding a lump on a senior dog. For one German shepherd parent, that anxiety turned into a three-month battle.

At that point, three months can feel like forever when your dog is sick. Salvador, a 12-year-old German shepherd, was diagnosed with a tumor known as an epithelioma of the hepatoid glands.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

These tumors are common in older dogs, yet they carry a lower risk of being malignant. Despite everything, any surgery on a senior pet is a significant event.

That's why so many people on Reddit's r/germanshepherds were celebrating after Salvador's parent shared the news that he had successfully overcome the tumor.

Simple, yet Powerful Update

The update was simple, "My GSD Salvador 'The Predator' 12 years-old beat a tumor," but the emotional reaction was not. And the community knew how much that meant to him.

One commenter said, "So happy for Salvador and your family, that's tremendous." Another added, "Here's to many more sticks, sniffs, and snuggles."

For anyone who has waited for biopsy results, monitored healing stitches, or watched their dog slowly regain energy after surgery, those comments mean the world.

Related: Senior Golden Retriever Who Never Had Toys Can’t Stop Showing off His New Treasures

What Is an Epithelioma of the Hepatoid Glands?

Despite the intimidating name, these tumors are often treatable when caught early. Hepatoid gland tumors usually appear around the anal region and are more common in older dogs, especially males. Most of the time, they are benign or only mildly malignant, which gives parents reason for optimism when surgery is possible.

That hopeful side is something pet parents love. We all panic when we hear the word "tumor," and understandably so. But not every diagnosis carries the same outcome. In cases like this, successful removal can give dogs many more comfortable, happy years.

And that's exactly what people in the Reddit thread were focusing on. One person wrote, "Here's to 12 more healthy years!"

Senior Dogs Still Surprise Us

One of the biggest challenges when owning a senior dog is how emotionally complicated every health scare becomes. Having a younger dog undergo surgery is frightening. An older dog getting surgery can feel devastating because parents know recovery may be harder.

But senior dogs are often tougher than people expect. In this case, Salvador beat the tumor in a three-month-long battle. But that is when you start appreciating ordinary things differently. A calm walk around the block. A peaceful nap in the sun. The sound of paws following you into another room. You cherish that moment because you do not know whether you will get another chance.

Watch the Touching Moment a Mother Turkey Meets Her Adopted Babies and Instantly Takes Charge

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 3:30pm

A turkey named Mayonnaise is melting hearts after meeting her adopted babies for the first time. Though she’d never had chicks of her own, the sweet bird immediately stepped into the role—taking charge as if she’d been waiting for this moment all along.

Mayo's human mama had noticed her broody behavior and declining health, so she decided to bring some babies home for the dejected turkey in the hopes of raising her spirits. Thankfully, it worked! Without hesitation, Mayo joined her adopted babies in their makeshift nest, providing them with the warmth and protection of a mother who had been with them since day one.

View this post on Instagram

Fans of Mayonnaise had a ball coming up with names for the babies in the comments, such as "her little mayonnaise packets" and "baby condiments."

Some viewers were even curious about the origin of Mayo's name, but it seems it was just a nod to her White Holland plumage.

It was a Happy Mother's Day indeed for Mayo and her little miracle (whips, LOL), who shows us that some families are chosen and built, sometimes instantly.

Why Turkeys Adopt Without Hesitation

Turkeys may not adopt babies as often as some other bird species, but when they do, it usually comes down to a combination of strong maternal instincts and their naturally social behavior. Mother turkeys are highly protective and especially receptive to the sounds of young birds in distress—something experts say can trigger a caregiving response, even if the baby isn’t technically theirs.

In the wild, young turkeys (called poults) depend on staying close to an adult for safety. If a poult becomes separated from its mother—or loses her entirely—it will instinctively seek out another adult, following closely and calling out for attention.

Because turkeys are social animals, that connection can sometimes form quickly, particularly if the hen is already in a nurturing mindset, like Mayonnaise.

Experts note that hens can be surprisingly sensitive to vulnerable young birds, especially when those strong maternal instincts kick in. And as Mayonnaise proves, sometimes all it takes is the right moment—and some help from a caring human—for that bond to form.

Fri, 05/15/2026 - 3:01pm

A diver in Australia captured mesmerizing footage of a rare octopus seemingly vanishing beneath the sand in seconds — and marine life fans can’t stop watching.

Diver Jules Casey, who often shares underwater footage to her OneBreathDiver Instagram account, captured the elusive Double-Spot Octopuscamouflaging itself beneath the sand, a sighting 10 years in the making.

A lucky diver managed to capture footage of a rare octopus disappearing into the sand in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, on April 24. Video posted by Jules Casey, who frequently shares underwater footage to her OneBreathDiver Instagram account, shows the elusive Double-Spot Octopus burrowing into the sand. “It has taken me 10 years to finally find one at Rye pier,” Casey said. “I’ve seen plenty at Blairgowrie and Sorrento but they remained elusive until two nights ago.” “Initially I thought it was a Sand Octopus until I got closer and saw the colouration was different. Knowing how incredibly shy they are I knew I didn’t have long before it would completely disappear beneath the sand. Very little is actually known about this Octopus because they are a fairly recent discovery. “This one is a male, if you watch closely you can see one arm is slightly shorter and the suckers don’t extend all the way to the tip.” #news #octopus #ocean

Fan responses range from curious to downright convinced the octopus is something otherworldly.

“You can't convince me that these are not aliens,” shared one viewer.

Another added, “Octopuses are aliens.”

A reflective commenter wrote, “Ocean life is a whole other universe.”

If you’re mesmerized, you’re not alone. This small underwater creature is found in the coastal waters of southern Australia, particularly around areas like Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. The species gets its name from the distinctive dark spots located near the rear of its body, though those markings can become difficult to see as the octopus changes color to blend into its surroundings.

As seen in Casey’s video, the Double-Spot Octopus has remarkable camouflage abilities, making the species both difficult to spot and difficult to study.

While many octopuses hide among rocks or coral, the Double-Spot Octopus burrows directly into the sand. Using its arms, it rapidly pulls sand and sediment over itself while simultaneously changing color and texture to match the ocean floor.

Though the octopus may appear to completely vanish beneath the sand, it is actually covering itself and blending seamlessly into its surroundings.

What viewers describe as alien-like behavior is actually the remarkable camouflage ability the octopus uses to protect itself from predators under the sea.

Truly remarkable, indeed.
