It’s no secret that most dogs aren’t exactly thrilled to be outside when temperature soar. But some breeds are predisposed to developing serious conditions like heatstroke when it’s hot out. If you’re looking to add a new furry member to your family, you may not even think to consider that, though, pet experts say it’s especially important if you live in areas that are warm all year round or get intense sun during the summer. After all, you want to make sure that the adorable companion you have will be safe and comfortable where they live. To help you out, we rounded up 6 dog breeds that have the highest risk of heatstroke, according to vets.

“Heatstroke is one of the few true veterinary emergencies that can develop surprisingly quickly, especially during hot, humid weather or periods of vigorous exercise,” explains Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster. “Unlike people, dogs have very limited ability to cool themselves because they don’t sweat over most of their bodies. Instead, dogs pant to dissipate heat.”

As a result, Myers adds that these heat sensitive dogs can get into danger faster than others and need watchful pet parents to keep them from doing so. “When the heat they generate or absorb exceeds their ability to cool themselves, their body temperature can rise rapidly,” Myers adds. 

For that reason, heatstroke is scary and serious for these pets especially. So while some breeds are more prone to develop heat-related health conditions than others, a dog’s age, weight, fitness, health, exercise intensity and how used to the heat they are all play a role as well, according to Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel. “Any dog can develop heatstroke, even on a warm day that does not feel exceptionally hot,” she says. 

Since heatstroke can be fatal for animals, it’s important to recognize the signs early and act fast. So what are the symptoms of heatstroke in dogs that you need to watch out for? “The first sign of heat stroke in dogs is often excessive panting that doesn’t slow down,” says Chyrle Bonk, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “That can be followed by drooling, vomiting or diarrhea, weakness or seizures,” she says. 

Luckily, heatstroke is preventable if you’re looking out for your pup and you follow safety tips for dogs to ensure they protected from the intense weather. While vets stress that all pet parents should be aware that heatstroke can happen, these are the dog breeds that may need you to keep a close eye on them during super sunny days. That way, if you get one of them, you’ll be more aware of the care they need so they will feel extra loved and looked after.

6 Dog Breeds That Have the Highest Risk of Heatstroke French Bulldog  Hot weather can pose a serious heatstroke risk for French Bulldogs.

French Bulldogs are sadly dog breeds that don’t do well in heat as they are in a category known as brachycephalic dogs, which means that they have short skulls and flat faces. As a result, Myers says they have narrowed upper airways. “Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting,” she explains. “Any condition that restricts airflow makes it more difficult to release excess body heat.” 

Brachycephalic dogs, like Frenchies, can become overwhelmed much more quickly than dogs with normal airway anatomy. “Even moderate temperatures, excitement, or relatively short periods of exercise can be enough to put some of these dogs at risk, particularly when humidity is high,” Myers adds.

French Bulldogs with breathing problems or excess weight may be especially vulnerable, according to Warner. Of course, there’s so much more to the French Bulldog than their sensitivity to heat as these small dogs have been the most popular dog in America for several years now. They also tend to have bright, fun personalities, making them an excellent addition to most households.

Greyhound Rising temperatures can be dangerous for Greyhounds.

It may seem random to include the Greyhound as dogs most at risk for heatstroke, given that they have long muzzles and short coats. But vets say these pups are vulnerable to extreme temperatures. “Their high proportion of lean muscle can generate a great deal of heat during intense exercise,” Warner reveals. “[To keep them safe and from overheating], owners should limit sprinting and vigorous play in warm weather.” 

Vets also note that older Greyhounds and those with heart or breathing conditions may also struggle more in the heat, especially if they are running or playing a lot. “Intense exercise generates a tremendous amount of body heat in a very short period of time, so vigorous activity on hot or humid days can overwhelm their normal cooling mechanisms,” she says.

To prevent any symptoms of heatstroke in these dogs like elevated body temperature, vomiting,excessive panting and collapse, there are a few things dog lovers can do. “Like any athletic dog, they should have opportunities to rest, hydrate, and cool down, and strenuous exercise is best reserved for the cooler parts of the day during the summer,” Warner advises.

Saint Bernard Saint Bernards may have a harder time cooling down on hot days.

The Saint Bernard was developed to work in cold environments, which can make super sunny days tricky for this breed to handle, as their coat is insulating, Myers states. Warner agrees, saying, “Saint Bernards have two factors that can increase their risk of heat stroke: Their very large size and dense coat. Large dogs can generate and retain more heat, while a heavy coat can make it harder to cool down.”

If you love big dogs, keep that in mind if you live in a place that is constantly warm, like Florida or Arizona. “Although healthy Saint Bernards can enjoy outdoor activity, they generally tolerate cold weather much better than summer heat and often benefit from limiting exercise to the coolest parts of the day,” Myers explains.

So how can you prevent heatstroke in Saint Bernards? Warner suggests that dog moms and dads keep their exercise routine and walks “gentle” when it’s hot out and make sure they have access to water and shade when they are outside.

Chow Chow This thick-coated breed is particularly sensitive to high temperatures.

You may not be surprised that the Chow Chow is prone to heatstroke. After all, these fluffy dogs have a thick double coat that makes it hard to stay cool, according to Bonk. “Their coat gives them the appearance of a teddy bear, and also helps keep them warm in cooler climates,” she says. “Though, in warmer climates, it can make it hard for Chow Chows to dissipate heat, potentially making them more at risk for heatstroke.”

In addition to their thick fur, Chow Chows also have a lion’s mane-style ruff that further insulates heat. Aside from that, if you are thinking about adopting one of these pretty dogs, they make loyal and affectionate companions, however, just be aware that they aren’t super social and don’t tend to blend well with other animals so they may not be the best fit for households with kids.

Dogue de Bordeaux Hot, humid days can be especially tough on this powerful breed.

Also known as a French Mastiff, the Dogue de Bordeaux is another brachycephalic breed. Because of this, vets consider them to be dog breeds that need extra care in summer. “They are less efficient at cooling through panting, making high temperatures or strenuous exercise a risk for heatstroke,” Bonk explains.

Besides the fact that they are brachycephalic dogs, another factor that casues these powerful dogs to overheat quickly and keeps them from staying as cool as other pups is their large size. Many adult Dogue de Bordeaux can reach 99 pounds, and many end up being heavier than that. “Their large size is also less efficient at dissipating body heat due to a low mass to surface area ratio,” Bonk notes.

As a result, like other large breeds, Warner says it’s important for pet parents to be mindful of outdoor temperatures and to try to limit exercise outside to cooler parts of the day to help these big pooches stay safe and healthy.

Golden Retriever Warm weather may be harder on Golden Retrievers than their playful nature suggests.

When it comes to dogs at risk of heatstroke, the Golden Retriever is one of them. These popular family dogs may be known for their love of the outdoors, but it’s important to pay close attention to the heat during warmer months. “Golden Retrievers possess a double coat which helps protect them from cold weather and chilly water, but works against them in the heat,” Bonk says. 

Goldens loves to be active, so to keep them safe when the weather is hot, you may need to focus a little more on reigning them in when it’s especially toasty out. “Combined with their higher energy level, heat stroke is a big concern,” Bonk says. That doesn’t mean your Golden Retriever can’t enjoy time outside when it’s hot out, you’ll just likely want to limit how long they romp around for and give them ready access to shade and water when temperatures soar.

How To Care for a Brussels Griffon’s Facial Hair

While facial hair like Hendrik’s is definitely entertaining, it isn’t all fun and games. Dog hair like this needs consistent and frequent grooming to maintain a clean and comfortable appearance for a Brussels Griffon. There are a few ways to achieve that fresh look.

When a Brussels Griffon eats, they’re nearly guaranteed to get food in their beard. After meals, it’s important to use a pet-safe wipe or damp cloth to wipe the food crumbs out of their facial hair and whiskers. After cleaning out the food, it’s a good idea to give their facial hair a brief combing, too, to ensure all the food is out and keep it from getting tangled. Use a bit of detangling spray if needed to get any tough knots out.

All About the Dogue de Bordeaux/French Mastiff Breed

The Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff, Bordeaux Mastiff, Dogue, Bordeauxdog, or DDB for short, is known for having deep bonds with their family members, and expressive bulldog-like faces that show it. Their loose wrinkles, expressive eyes, and loyal demeanor make them even more adorable.

DDBs are ancient French dogs, that according to the American Kennel Club, were around before France was even France! The color of a cat's eyes ultimately comes down to genetics, the same way that it does for us humans. All kittens are born with blue eyes, but often, they'll change as the babies grow and their bodies start to produce more melanin.

But what determines if your cat's eyes stay blue or change to a more common color like brown or yellow? That's the melanin, too, and your cat's coat color will give you a hint. Cats who have lighter coats or who are all white are more likely to have light blue eyes, since their bodies aren't producing as much.

She named him Paddington after the beloved bear, but she also calls him Paddy or the "fluffy goblin." Today, that famous duo marks one year together and one year since Paddy flew from Peru to his forever home in the United Kingdom.

Radley went to Peru on a break from her daily 9-to-5 grind. She never planned to adopt or rescue a dog. Four months before she left, she broke her back and thought she might need to cancel. Somehow, she made it through.

She first encountered Paddy in Ollantaytambo, a village in Peru's Sacred Valley. He was skinny and living on scraps, but he had already decided that Radley was his person.

He followed her around and slept outside her room. Getting him from Peru to the U.K. involved paperwork, travel complications and delays. At one point, Radley and Paddy nearly got stuck in Colombia, before eventually facing another delay in France.

But everything they went through makes the one-year milestone feel so special. She posted on her social media account, saying, "It's been one year since I flew off to Peru on a high stakes rescue mission," jokingly describing Paddy as the "fluffy goblin who stole my heart."

Finding a Community Along the Way

Many people who discovered Radley's account during the rescue have stuck around. One fan wrote, "I found ur account the day you found him. I waited and checked everyday to see when he finally came home."

Another explained that she was pregnant during the rescue, and she now has eight-month-old twins who love their dogs and Paddy as well.

Today, Radley and Paddy have close to 400,000 followers on Instagram. As she said in the anniversary caption, "It was not a smooth sailing rescue by any means. But worth every second of stress to get my best friend home."

After rescuing Paddy, Radley left her career in biotech and partnered with Colitas Con Canas, a Peruvian rescue center, to advocate for the country's street dogs. She also wrote a book, Paddy From Peru, which was published last month.

He wants to sleep. He really does. But what if something important happens the second he closes both eyes? Worse, what if he misses it?

Meet the dog in question, better known around here as Booger His Royal Chunkiness. He's a French Bulldog with the body of a tiny bodybuilder, the facial expression of someone who's just been asked to pay rent, bat ears, beefy little shoulders, and a perfectly pouty face. He's also, underneath all that tough-guy energy, a professional-grade cuddle bug who firmly believes every blanket is his personal throne.

He's trying, genuinely trying, to settle in. His body clearly wants the nap. But one eye stays vigilantly cracked open the entire time, tracking every tiny movement nearby, refusing to fully commit, just in case something worth seeing happens. It's both protective and completely, comically stubborn, a dog physically shutting down while some other part of his brain absolutely refuses to clock out.

Turns out this isn't unique to him at all. There's actually a reason so many dogs seem to fight sleep the same way.

Why Dogs Sometimes Sleep With One Eye Open

According to Northwest Animal Eye Specialist, the most likely explanation is pretty simple: your dog just isn't fully asleep yet. Early on in the sleep cycle, dogs are relaxing but still lightly dozing, alert enough that they'll snap right back awake from barely anything: a quiet sound, their name said softly, or even another pet walking past.

There's an old instinct behind it too. Dogs have retained some of their ancestors' instinctual need to stay minimally alert at all times, even while resting, a leftover habit from a time when being fully unconscious just wasn't safe. Even deep into what looks like sleep, part of a dog's brain can stay switched on, just in case.

Then there's the dreaming piece. Dogs go through real REM sleep exactly the same way humans do, and during that stage their eyes can flicker or move even while they're completely out. So if your dog twitches, huffs, or seems to be watching something with his eyes shut, that's probably not FOMO at all. That's just a dream.

Breed plays a role here too, and this is where it gets extra relevant to His Royal Chunkiness specifically. Flat-faced breeds like Frenchies often have eyes that look like they're slightly bulging, due to their shorter snouts and rounder foreheads, which can make it seem like their eyes are open even when they're actually closed.

For the most part, though, none of this is anything to worry about. It's just how many dogs sleep. It's definitley worth a vet visit, though, if the eyes look irritated or red, if your dog seems out of it or falls over when waking up, or if a sleep pattern changes suddenly along with other unusual behavior.

His Royal Chunkiness, for now, remains undefeated. One eye open and absolutely refusing to miss a single thing.

Living with a Maine Coon is...an experience.

My own giant floof, Meatball, eats enough food that I sometimes wonder whether he's secretly feeding a second family somewhere. If I'm eating anything remotely interesting, he's convinced it belongs to him and has absolutely no shame about attempting to steal food directly out of my mouth.

He's also roughly the size of a small ottoman.

When he jumps onto my lap, or more accurately, launches himself onto my chest, there are moments when he genuinely knocks the wind out of me. You haven't truly lived until you've been body-slammed by 24 pounds of fluffy enthusiasm.

And then there are the toys.

For reasons known only to Meatball, I routinely discover them floating in his water dish. Mice. Balls. Springs. If it fits, there's a decent chance he'll marinate it before playing with it again.

Retrievers have what's called a "soft mouth," meaning they're built to hold something gently instead of crushing it immediately. After all, pets can be tricky to read. However you have to remember that forgiveness is a little different between dogs and humans. “Dogs generally don’t hold grudges in the same way people do,” says Nita Vasudevan, DVM, an Embrace Pet Insurance veterinarian contributor. “If you accidentally scare, startle, or upset your dog, they may be cautious for a little while but what matters most is what they do once they feel safe again.”

These subtle behaviors can help tip you off that your dog feels comfortable with you and that your relationship is back on track, she says. 

Unfortunately, you and your dog can’t sit down for a heart-to-heart to go over what went down the best path forward for everyone. But aside from providing your pooch with regular reassurance, you can look out for certain signs that suggest they’re ready to move on and rekindle your bond. Here’s what Vasudevan suggests being on the lookout for to know that your dog trusts you and they have moved past what happened.

They Sit Near You

If you've ever thought to yourself, "How do I know my dog forgives me?" you're not alone. Luckily, one way to tell your dog is no longer upset with you comes down to where they sit.

In fact, vets say a dog that isn’t happy with you is unlikely to want to sit next to you. But Vasudevan says it’s a good sign that all is forgiven if your pup plops next to you on the couch or hangs by your desk while you’re working. 

They Lean Against You

While dogs may not communicate the same as people and not exactly know when you apologize to them or when you feel bad about something, they can show their feelings through their actions when they are near you.

So while serving as your dog’s resting post might throw you off-balance, it comes from a place of love. “When a dog leans against you or presses their body into you it is often a sign that your dog is comfortable with physical contact and is seeking closeness,” Vasudevan reveals. 

They Follow You Around

How dogs respond after conflict can tell you a lot about where they stand. So if your pup is following you around, that's a good sign.

Ths dog behavior shows that your pup feels attached and bonded to you. Bonus points if your dog follows you to the bathroom, since this is an act that suggests they still view you as part of your pack. 

They Greet You When You Come Home

Not every dog is a big “greeter” for their owners. But Vasudevan says this is a good sign if this was always a routine for you and your dog continues to do happily when you come home after you accidently feel like you did something that hurt their feelings.

“Dogs are social animals, and voluntarily approaching you suggests they still view you as a safe and trusted person,” she says.

They Bring You a Toy

How long does it take a dog to forgive their owner for something? Like people, every dog is different. Though you can tell if your dog still trusts you by if they want to play with you or if they continue to bring you gifts.

Vets say it's a good sign if your pooch drops one of their favorite dog toys at your feet. “Bringing you a favorite toy can be a sign that your dog is returning to their normal, playful behavior,” she says.

They Paw at You

Resting a paw on your leg or nudging you with their nose suggests your dog wants to connect. This sweet affectionate dog behavior is an act of love.

“This may be an invitation to interact with them, which is generally a positive sign that they’re comfortable engaging with you again,” Vasudevan explains.

They Look Relaxed

Besides dog actions and behaviors, pet parents may also want to pay attention to ther dog's body language to tell if they are happy or not in someone's presence.

“This is probably one of the most important things to look for,” Vasudevan notes. “A dog who is loose and relaxed, with soft facial features, normal ear position, and a relaxed tail, is generally telling you they feel safe.”

Some Facts About Polar Bear Cubs:

• Typically born in the winter in dens, polar bears are born completely blind, deaf, hairless, and dependent on their mothers.
• Cubs are most frequently born in sets of twins, although single cubs and more multiples can occur.
• A mother polar bear's milk is often over 30% fat, which allows the cubs to put on weight and grow substantially before they leave the den.
• Families will stay in the den for about three to four months before emerging.
• Male polar bears play no role in raising cubs.
• Cubs will stay with their mothers for close to two and a half years, learning necessary survival skills.
• Once they become independent, they face life completely on their own.
