The barking inside the house is almost overwhelming at first.

Tiny dogs crowd every corner of the home, climbing over debris and one another while rescuers work carefully through heartbreaking conditions to save as many animals as possible.

TikTok user @nc5nashville shared footage from a massive rescue operation in Rutherford County, Tennessee, where Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) stepped in to save more than 100 vulnerable dogs living in severe overcrowding and neglect.

According to ARC, Rescuers Ultimately Removed:

• 133 Chihuahuas
• 1 large dog
• 12 cats

...from the property during what they called “Operation Little Dogs, Big Hearts.”

The rescue team first responded after family members sought help for elderly relatives who could no longer properly care for the animals or keep them safely in the home.

But when ARC arrived, responders quickly realized the situation was far worse than expected.

The Organization Described:

• Severe overcrowding
• Dangerous, unsanitary conditions
• Floors covered in accumulated feces
• Animals showing signs of stress and aggression
• Serious, untreated medical conditions

Some of the Dogs Reportedly Suffered From:

• Fight injuries
• Respiratory distress
• Tumors
• Eye infections and ulcers
• Severe dental disease
• Congestive heart failure

Several pregnant dogs, nursing mothers, and vulnerable puppies were rescued first during an emergency assessment before teams returned days later to remove every remaining animal from the property.

One especially emotional detail involved four puppies born after intake at the ARC Rescue Center. Tragicall,y only one survived, though rescuers say the surviving puppy is now beginning to thrive.

People watching the rescue online were emotional not only about the suffering the dogs endured, but also about seeing them finally receive care and compassion.

Many commenters immediately asked how they could adopt one of the rescued Chihuahuas.

ARC Explained:

• “We don’t adopt out directly from our shelter.”
• Once healthy, the animals will be transferred to rescue and adoption partners across the country.

Gojo the Ragdoll could join The Nutcracker in an instant; her leaps are so good! She loves her feather toy, which is one of the most iconic cat toys ever. Even the laziest cats love toys like this: it's just impossible not to want to jump after it!

Gojo typically doesn't practice her ballet unless the feather toy is out, but that's all part of training. As she gets older, she'll learn to dance on her own, and then her career on Broadway can really begin.

Enrichment is the most important part of having an indoor cat. Keeping your cat indoors is what's best for them and the environment, but it also means you'll have to compensate with lots of toys, places to climb, and other things to do.

Do Dachshunds Need Haircuts?

How often Dachshunds need haircuts depends on the type of hair they have.

Smooth-haired and Wirehaired Dachshunds are a bit more low-maintenance pups when it comes to haircut maintenance than Longhaired Dachshunds.

Because Longhaired Dachshunds have long, silky coats, they require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles.

Regular haircuts should also be in a rotation of about every six to eight weeks, as well as frequent baths.

"Grinchy" feet are quite cute, but their hair could get so long that they may end up tripping or getting their hair caught on something if it's too long.

Maine Coons are famously huge. You can't have a Maine Coon without their sheer size; otherwise, that's just a regular cat. However, there are some people who really don't understand just how big these impressive cats are.

Jessica Lopez is totally in love with her Maine Coon, Maximus, and for good reason. Sometimes you hear someone say their cat is a Maine Coon and you're like, "I think that's just a big cat..." But there is absolutely no question about Max.

The TikTok from @fluffy_thepersiancat featured Pixie before her surgery with her ears intact and wearing a cone, followed by a close-up after her ears were removed. Several clips showed Pixie with prominent stitches on the sides of her head, requiring her to keep the cone.

Once the cone was removed and the stitches were healed, Pixie's earless head looked adorably fluffy. The feline fur baby happily rolled on the floor and made some biscuits on the furniture, clearly having bounced back after her operation. Pixie's new look resembled an adorable marine mammal.

"Cancer took Pixie's ears," the onscreen text explained. "She responded by unlocking seal mode and becoming a seal cat icon."

Pixie has acquired a large fan base throughout her recovery journey, with many applauding her bravery and raving over her natural beauty.

"I love her — I hope she lives forever," one cheered.

"Hope she recovered real well!! She's one of my favorite cats I've seen so far!" another commented.

Helping a Cat Thrive After Major Surgery

Cats need extra care after an operation and count on their family members to help them through the healing process. A few ways to ensure a smooth recovery include:

Caring for Baby Lambs

Taking care of a baby lamb is actually more labor intensive and technical than most people might think. Newborn lambs must consume up to two ounces of colostrum per pound of body weight within the first 12 hours of being born for vital antibodies that are critical to their immune system. If it's not coming from mom, a colostrum replacer from a human via a bottle is necessary. On top of this, it's highly important that they stay warm and their body temperature does not drop below 99° Fahrenheit, especially before eating.

If a mother isn't able to care for their lamb for whatever reason, a bottle feeding schedule and regimen is necessary for at least the first two weeks of the lamb's life. Humans should choose a quality milk replacer, feed the lamb every four hours, and keep an eye on them to ensure they aren't getting bloated which can be both uncomfortable and dangerous. Around two weeks of age, solid foods like pellets and hay can begin to be introduced into the baby lamb's diet. Lambs can be weaned off of milk once they're strong enough, typically around 30 pounds or within 30 days.

These are the breeds vets say often surprise first-time owners and aren't good pets for those who are new to dog parenting.

Belgian Malinois This breed can be more demanding than it first appears.

The Belgian Malinois is known for its bravery, intelligence, and strong guard dog instincts, making it a standout working breed in police and military roles. However, experts often rank it among the hardest dog breeds for first-time owners, particularly for those unprepared for its intensity and constant need for engagement.

Without consistent structure, training, and daily stimulation, this is a bg dog can become more challenging than many first-time owners expect, with behavior issues that often surprise new pet parents.

“The Belgian Malinois is a very smart, high-energy breed that needs a job in order to flourish,” says Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor at Embrace Pet Insurance.

When those needs aren’t met through proper exercise, socialization, and mental engagement, vets warn the breed can develop anxiety and destructive behaviors, making it a poor match for beginners without prior dog-handling experience.

This makes it one of the most challenging dog breeds for first-time owners, especially those without experience handling large guardian dogs. “This breed is inherently intelligent, vigilant and aggressive,” Hunt says. “They must be carefully socialized extensively as puppies in order to be well behaved, social dogs that do not pose a risk to humans or other animals.”

While this breed can be devoted to its owner, its strength can be hard for first-time owners to manage, and vets say it can catch many new dog owners off guard with how demanding it is in real life. "The Cane Corso’s tendency toward aggression can be problematic, too," Hunt says. "For many beginners, this is a breed that can feel more challenging than expected without experienced handling, which is why it's not thought of as a beginner-friendly dog."

If you're getting a dog for the first time, you may be drawn to Chow Chows due to their bear-like appearance and fluffy coats. However, Hunt says this medium-to-large size dog breed is known for its independence and originally bred as a guardian, making it inherently aloof. Because its temperament, vets say it can be a challenging breed for first-time dog owners and one of the hardest dog breeds for beginners.

For many new pet parents, this is a breed that can catch owners off guard with how reserved it is in daily life. "This breed tends to bond with one person, possibly a few at most, but they regard all other humans with wariness,” Hunt reveals. “Chows are generally not considered to be good family dogs as a result of their wary and potentially aggressive behavior,” she adds.

This doesn’t mean the Chow Chow can’t be a great dog—it’s just unlikely to be a good fit for a first-time owner, especially those who don’t expect a dog that is more independent and less social than most popular breeds people choose for families.

Australian Shepherd Not a low-maintenance dog for first-time owners.

Another harder than expected dog breed that inexperienced dog owners should aviod are Australian Shepherds. First-time dog owners should know before choosing this breed that they have a high level of intelligence, matched only by their athletic nature and high need for exercise. “They need to have a job and significant daily exercise in order to be well-behaved dogs,” Hunt says. 

If you live on a farm or area with a lot of land where your dog can roam and run, this herding breed may be a good fit. But, otherwise, this breed is unlikely to be a good match for a first-timer. "The average owner is not able to meet these dogs’ needs for exercise and mental stimulation, and as a result, they can develop behavioral problems,” Hunt says.

Teacup Yorkshire Terrier A tiny, high-maintenance breed that requires careful handling.

This breed looks easy—but isn't. In fact, for many new pet parents, this is one of those dogs that can catch first-time owners off guard with how delicate and demanding it is in everyday handling. So, if you're a first-time dog owner and want a small dog, the Teacup Yorkshire Terrier may not be the rigth match for you.

While extremely popular due to its tiny size, vets often list these teacup breeds among the worst dog breeds for first-time owners because of its fragility and care needs.

These pups are a smaller version of the classic Yorkshire Terrier, weighs under four pounds and is a high-maintenance dog breed to look after. “Teacup Yorkshire Terriers are not good dogs for inexperienced owners,” Hunt says. “If one of these teacup dogs jumps from an owner’s arms to the ground, they can fracture both of their front legs, requiring corrective surgery.” 

If you like the idea of a Teacup Yorkshire Terrier but are a first-time owner, Hunt suggests looking into a regular Yorkshire Terrier or other small dog breed. These are still petite, but are slightly more hearty.

Russell Terrier A small but extremely energetic and driven breed that can be hard for frst-time owners.

The Russell Terrier—also known as a Jack Russell Terrier is a fun-loving breed, but its need for activity can be tough for inexperienced owners and one of the worst dog breeds for seniors. “Jack Russell Terriers are insanely high-energy,” Hunt says. “I have seen many owners struggle to meet their needs for exercise, resulting in a hyper dog terrorizing their home.”

The Russell Terrier is considered one of the highest-energy dog breeds you can get, which many people don't realize. While regular walks, trips to the dog park and runs will help offset some of that, they like to explore off-leash too. That just requires plenty of training first to ensure the safety of your pet—and most first-time dog owners aren’t up for the task, making this small breed surprisingly difficult to have and not ideal for beginners.

Bulldog A calm companion breed with specific care needs.

Bulldog can be surprisingly difficult to own for first-time pet parents as they require above-average care. This is often due to the breed’s smushed-in, or brachycephalic, face, Hunt says. 

“A Bulldog's face shape causes varying degrees of respiratory compromise,” Hunt says. “Because panting is how dogs dissipate most of their heat, a dog with respiratory compromise is perpetually at risk of heat stroke.”

These medium-sized dogs also have skin folds on their face, and sometimes body, that are prone to developing skin infections. These pups require careful management and care as a result, Hunt says, making this a breed that require more experience than beginners realize.

The video posted on Reddit's r/cats shows firefighters rescuing a trapped cat from inside the restaurant's wall. It is another example of how seriously everyone in Turkey treats cats.

In the TikTok from @ironmane_coons, the gorgeous Golden sadly whimpered as she lay on the floor with a plush cat toy. The precious pooch vocalized her despair with guttural cries, letting everyone around her know she was in emotional pain. Apparently, the litter of Maine Coon kittens she bonded with were adopted and went with their new families, leaving the Golden on her own.

The family's dog, a 10-month-old Boykin spaniel, passed away after a brief battle with a spider bite. The family has been posting on Reddit's r/DogAdvice for the past 10 days, and the most recent update came as a blow to everyone following the story. The post, titled "Well bad news everyone," shows Goose's face as he is looking at his humans.

For a while, it looked like he would survive. He had started eating again, hunting around the house for snacks, playing, and getting back to being a young, energetic puppy.

Then, everything changed.

A Spider Bite That Proved Deadly

The family first posted about Goose's condition on Reddit, hoping to get advice and tips from the community. They explained that their young puppy was bitten by a brown recluse spider right on his "bean bag." Goose bit the spider, and the family believes he was bitten several times in his mouth.

For several days, they tried soft dog food, bone broth, IV fluids and antibiotics. Veterinarians even surgically removed dead and necrotic tissue from his groin area and parts of his mouth.

There was a slight improvement, as Goose began to eat, play and act like a puppy. Yet, over the weekend, his condition worsened, as he became bloated, lethargic and stopped eating.

The family posted the update as a warning to pet parents to watch out for brown recluse spiders, because they believe no one deserves to go through what they did with Goose.

Brown Recluse Bites Can Become Dangerous Fast

Brown recluse spiders are found throughout parts of the Midwest and southern United States. Most bites in humans and pets remain localized, but in more severe cases, the spider's venom can destroy tissue around the wound through a process called necrosis.

Dogs bitten in sensitive areas, especially the mouth, can face complications involving infection, swelling, pain, dehydration and tissue death. Secondary infections can become particularly dangerous if the body struggles to recover.

The biggest challenge is that these bites are unpredictable. A pet may appear stable for days before suddenly worsening. That uncertainty haunted Goose's family until the very end.

Pet Parents Saw Themselves in This Story

The comments under Goose's final update became a flood of grief and empathy from other pet owners.

"I was so hoping Goose would pull through," one person wrote. Another commenter admitted Goose's story changed how they think about outdoor dangers around their own home: "I have found a couple black widows in my yard recently. Thank you for the PSA. Maybe you saved my dogs via this post."

According to Humane World for Animals, declawing (onychectomy) is widely considered inhumane by major animal welfare organizations, which equate the procedure to an invasive surgical amputation of the last bone in each of a cat’s toes.

For cats, the process is equivalent to severing a human finger at the first knuckle.

In addition, cats lose their natural ability to protect themselves following a declawing procedure, as well as their ability to properly stretch, climb, or defend themselves if they go outdoors.

Worse yet, without its claws, a cat’s primary defense is biting. Cats stand a good chance of becoming biters once declawed.

Without their claws, cats can experience pain when walking on tender paws or digging in the litter box, which might mean avoiding the litter box altogether — which might explain why Khloé’s cats have suddenly taken to urinating freely throughout the house.

Declawing is a wildly controversial procedure that has been banned in many countries and multiple U.S. states.

Rather than resorting to surgery, cat parents can provide various scratchers for their cats and regularly trim the sharp tips of their cats’ claws. Whatever you do, consult a feline expert or your veterinarian first.

Khloe's comments haven't been entirely well received from her legions of fans, many of whom shared comments on social media asking why she didn't do some simple Google research on the process before subjecting her cats to being declawed.

A few months after that event, Bella's mom posted on Reddit's r/germanshepherds, showing how her dog looked before and after she showered her with love and affection.

Bella's Condition Shocked People

Bella's mom said she was happy she didn't hit her. Many people commented on Bella's previous life, saying, "Omg poor baby!! So glad you found and nurtured her!" and "I can't believe what her life was like before you saved her."

Cheesecake and Pumpkin are two adorable capybaras who have access to this human’s back porch through a connected pasture. They come up to the door when they want extra attention and cuddles. But Cheesecake? She's figured out the system. Get there early, claim the couch and win.

How Dogs Form Bonds With Unusual Animals

Here's why Stevie is so chill about having a capybara sibling: dogs are exceptionally good at bonding across species lines.

According to the American Kennel Club, researchers have found that dogs possess genes associated with what scientists call "hypersociability"—an unusual friendliness that extends beyond their own species. They genuinely love almost everyone.

Dr. Clive Wynne, a psychologist at Arizona State University, calls it "interspecies love." He believes that at some point throughout their evolution, dogs experienced genetic changes that made them friendlier toward other species. Not just tolerant but actually friendly.

Dogs will bond with whatever they're raised with: humans, kittens, goats, bunnies and yes, even capybaras. If a puppy grows up with goats, they'll bond with goats. If they grow up living with capybaras? Well, you get Stevie calmly accepting that there's a 100-pound rodent at the door asking to come in.

The AKC notes that Livestock Guardian Dogs are specifically raised by being placed in bonding pens with whatever species they'll eventually protect. Dr. Stanley Coren, professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia, explains that we've specifically bred dogs over many centuries to form strong attachments—and those attachments naturally extend to other species. Young mammals also give off pheromones that can trigger maternal instincts in dogs, creating bonds that will last lifetimes.

The simplest explanation is that animals form their tightest bonds when they're very young puppies. If a dog is raised alongside another species, they'll bond naturally. Period.
