Yet, what makes this story amazing is something that happens rarely, but will melt your heart. One woman entered an animal shelter looking for a cat, but she didn't expect to meet one missing a hind leg and with an extra set of toes.

And that one meeting changed a cat's life. The orange cat was freshly neutered and still learning to walk comfortably again without a leg. But that was all part of this cat's charm.

One Meeting Changing a Cat's Life

As his new mom said in a post on Reddit's r/orangecats, "Met this guy at the shelter and had to bring him home. Down a leg, but up some toes." People instantly fell in love with the cat's expression, his resilience, and the fact that he remained incredibly affectionate despite everything he had been through.

According to his new parent, shelter staff believed the cat's injuries came from a car accident before he was rescued.

The Community Fell in Love With Him

The internet responded exactly the way you would expect when an orange cat with a tough backstory appears online.

Disabled Cats Can Live a Happy Life

People often assume that disabled pets live sad or heavily limited lives. The reality is that cats are incredibly adaptable, and this orange guy is living proof.

According to his new mom, the cat was relearning how to move around and was showing classic signs of a cat settling into a new home: being affectionate and curious.

The post on Reddit's r/DogAdvice quickly drove comments and responses from many pet parents. They recognized something familiar, and many of the conversations revolved around one specific habit: dogs turning their backsides toward the people they trust most. While the miserable dad thinks his dog doesn't love him, the community offered relief.

One commenter said, "Dogs sitting with their back to you is a sign of trust. They don't have to keep an eye on you because they know you won't hurt them."

Another joked, "My dog shows me his butt hole more than his face." The jokes continued, with one saying, "I have 2 dane mixes with their butts pointed at me right now. Pray for me."

Why Do Dogs Show Their Butt to Their Parents?

As funny as the comments were, the discussion touched on something behavior experts often point out about dogs. Many dogs turn away or rest with their backs toward trusted humans because it allows them to relax while still monitoring their environment.

In the canine world, turning their means signals comfort and security, not rejection. You might have experienced your own version of this situation. For example, maybe your dog follows your partner from one room to another, barely seeing you through the day. But then, at bedtime, they curl against your legs like you are the safest place in the world.

And let's not forget that the term "spare human" has grown in popularity recently. Maybe the man in the Reddit post is going through it right now.

Does Your Dog Love You?

When you fall in love with someone, it is normal to want reassurance from that person. We want to feel loved by the person we love.

But as strangely as it sounds, we also want our dogs to love us. We want them to wag their tails at the door when we come, rest their head on our lap, and we love the moments they say, "You are my favorite person."

But dogs do not communicate like us. For dogs, love sometimes is leaning against your legs or bringing you a toy. Yet, sometimes, love looks like planting their butt directly in your face while they fall asleep.

Imagine sitting on your patio during broad daylight, and a predator jumps into your backyard. That is what happened to one pet parent in Glendora, Calif.

A mountain lion jumped into his yard and attacked his 7-year-old Akita named Sasha. His dog instantly sounded the alarm, and Kevin Diehl stepped outside.

Coming face to face with a full-grown predator, he had a split second to react. The mountain lion had already put its teeth into Sasha's head, and Diehl, in a pure moment of instinct, kicked it firmly in the leg.

The strike worked, causing the large wildcat to release his dog and flee into the brush. Diehl then took his dog to an emergency veterinary clinic, where they were able to save him by stitching his head and neck. The good news is that the cat's bite narrowly missed Sasha's jugular vein, which could have been fatal.

Mountain Lion Sightings Are Increasing in California

Diehl talked about the incident with reporters, saying, "You can see the claw marks. The eyes were just huge and clear, and her teeth were fully in Sasha's skull. I had to do something."

For most people outside the western United States, the idea of a mountain lion appearing in your backyard sounds unreal.

Yet, the large cats are native to California. Communities close to wild habitats often encounter mountain lions. Glendora, for example, is close to the Angeles National Forest, a natural home and habitat for mountain lions. California's Department of Fish and Wildlife always recommends reporting incidents or sightings, if possible, in order to keep both the cats and the public safe.

How to Protect Your Pet From Predators

If you live near a wilderness area, you should keep a close eye on your pets. The simplest way to protect your pet is to clear the thick brush around the perimeter of the yard to eliminate hiding spots for predators.

If you ever find yourself face-to-face with a large cat, do not run. It is better to stay your ground, look as large as possible, wave your arms, and speak in a loud voice to convince the animal you are a threat.

Stories like Sasha's may cause fear for pet parents. You never think about encountering a wild animal until it stands in your yard.

And in that moment, survival instinct might kick in and give you enough force and bravery to save your beloved dog.

Dogs in shelters waiting for their forever homes don't get the consistent love and comfort they need to thrive. While staff members and volunteers work tirelessly to give these canines as much attention as possible, it's not the same as having a family to call your own — these fur babies long for affection and security.

Hauoli has been at the Maui Humane Society since early April and opts for pets and cuddles over other special treats, showing just how much he needs human connection.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Hauli sat against the wall in his kennel, lovingly looking at a staff member as she petted him. He was offered some plushies and biscuits but wanted something more personal.

"Sometimes shelter dogs don't want toys," the onscreen text explained. "They don't want treats. Sometimes, they just want someone to stay."

The precious pooch kept his paw on the staff member's arm, most likely hoping to keep her with him. Finally, he lay on his back for a much-needed belly rub.

"Hauoli sat here like this for half an hour, just soaking in every second of attention," the story continued. "Like he was trying to hold onto the feeling."

'Hauoli' Means Happiness

This canine cutie was given a name that describes his sweet spirit. Hauʻoli is a Hawaiian word that translates to "happy" or "joyful", attributes this loving fur baby shows when he feels safe and loved.

Hauoli's bio describes him as "a sweet, affectionate guy who might be a little shy at first," but soon he goes in for cuddles. He loves toys, splashing in the pool, and playing with other pups, but his top priority is affection.

"My number one favorite thing is snuggling up close and staying there. I'm the kind of dog who bonds deeply and loves being near my person. If you're looking for a gentle, loving companion with a soft heart and happy soul, I'm your Hauoli!"

The video concluded with a reminder of how solitary the shelter life is for dogs.

Koda, the senior dog, experienced what was apparently the most emotionally devastating event of his life after realizing his mom had mysteriously vanished from the shower.

The only problem? She was literally in the bathtub on the other side of the bathroom the entire time.

• At one point, he literally leaves the room entirely, as if he has accepted permanent loss.

And then comes the emotional reveal.

Once Koda finally realizes his mom has been in the bathtub the entire time, his tiny little eyes actually look watery with relief.

People in the Comments Were Absolutely Losing It:

Meanwhile, my Pomeranian, Kingston, also acts like every closed bathroom door represents an active family emergency, so honestly, this level of dramatic attachment feels extremely believable.

The fact that feral cats exist at all is upsetting to me. I wish they could all have loving homes where they're treated like royalty, but unfortunately, that's not the case. So, whenever we can, we need to be looking out for them.

Katie Liner found these 6 kittens at random, but she's lucky she did. It looks like it was a rainy day, which can be really harmful for kittens this small. They have a tough time keeping warm, and if they live in a consistently humid area, they're at risk for respiratory infections.

In this video, there are only 5 kittens present, but she later found a 6th one hiding in the bushes. She also apparently knows the mama cat, and she's taken all 6 kittens and mama in to make sure they're okay. Once the kittens are old enough, she's adopting them out!

Rehabilitating Feral Cats Is Tough

Feral cats are not easy. They've never been around people before, or if they have, something has typically happened that has left them distrusting of humans completely. It's so sad.

In most cases, when you want to help feral cats, the kindest thing to do is TNVR: trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release. They're not fit for life as pets, most of the time, and a lot of them won't be happy. However, it can be easier to rehabilitate feral kittens because:

• They're younger.
• They haven't had negative experiences with humans yet.
• They're less likely to have age-related health issues.

Kittens are also easier to train, which can make them more "desirable" to prospective adopters. Luckily, these sweet alley cats were rescued just in the nick of time!

Sweet Rosie had her first bath in the outdoor aviary, spent more time outside of her cage with Mom, began stepping onto Mom's arm, grew new feathers (a big deal), and made the cutest "happy sounds"—all things that say this rescue Parrot is finally letting down her guard.

As with any newcomer, it can take some time for them to fully adjust. Experts suggest the 3-3-3 rule, which is:

• 3 days to decompress
• 3 weeks to learn new routines
• 3 months for their true personality to shine through

No matter what their previous life was like, the first few days or weeks may come with challenges, so patience is the priority. Keep Parrots in their "safe haven" cage for the first 24 to 48 hours, so they have time to acclimate to the new environment, and don't force them to come out. It should be in a quiet place, and only one primary person should do all the interacting to help develop a strong foundation of trust.

Speak calmly, blink slowly, and nod your head toward them so they know you're not a threat. Like with cats and dogs, treats help! Plus, it makes you their most valuable human in the house. Stick to a schedule they can learn to depend on, and when they feel comfortable, they'll initiate coming out of their cage on their own.

Rosie's already made tremendous strides in such a short time. I can't wait to see her in a few more weeks!

Some Maine Coons adapt surprisingly well to car rides because the breed is often known for being social, curious, and more easygoing than many other cats. Early positive exposure to carriers, harnesses, and travel can also help kittens become more comfortable riding in vehicles.

Mouthing is also about affection. Dogs For Good notes that many dogs use their mouths or paws to get attention—not to cause harm, but as a way of inviting deeper connection. When Whiskey holds a hand in his mouth, he's saying "I like you, please stay here with me, I'm holding you now."

It's absolutely puppy love. Just with more drool.

Teething plays a role too. Puppies teethe until around six months old, and their gums can be uncomfortable. Having something in their mouth—whether it's a toy, a chew, or a conveniently available human hand—helps soothe that pain and discomfort.

He comes from Royalty Bengals, and he definitely looks to be full-grown (or pretty close to it). He's red, which is a nice shift from most standard Bengal Cats, who are a more cool-toned brown color. To go along with his fiery color, he also has an equally fiery attitude.

He's only one of many Bengals at this cattery, though he's definitely a standout. They have lots of standard Bengals, and even a few grey ones, but he's just so different. In the sunlight, he shines very bright, with his markings being an even deeper shade of red than the rest of his coat.

The TikTok from @jesspaulsonart shared Graham's story, including concerns over his mom's reaction to his disability.

"When little Graham was born, another kitten's umbilical cord wrapped tightly around his waist, cutting off circulation to his legs," the onscreen text explained, with clips of Graham as a newborn. "We were worried his mama would disown him."

The little kitten struggled to develop and couldn't keep up with his littermates. The paralysis of his back legs also caused growth disparities.

"He was the slowest to gain weight," the story continued. "His body grew faster than his legs and we became worried he wouldn't be able to go to the bathroom."

After seeking medical advice, Graham's caretakers began doing at-home exercises and stretches to improve his mobility. The feline fur baby was an inspiration with his tender heart and willingness to work.

"He stole our hearts, sucking his thumb," the text shared as Graham gently placed his tiny paw near his mouth. "He was so determined to move around like his siblings."

Graham Learned How to Get Around

The little feline is finding ways to navigate life and showing a surprising inner strength for such a tiny kitten.

"He is adapting and doing things his own way," the TikTok reported as Graham played with his siblings, snuggled in a cat bed, and got a case of the zoomies. "Sometimes his legs do a little split."

Followers fell in love with Graham and praised his parents for their commitment to the kitten's care.

Do Dogs Actually Dream?

So, what do pups dream about?

Well, first of all, let's discuss the fact that dogs do have dreams and sleep cycles, just like humans.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), their sleep consists of periods of wakefulness, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and then non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep.

It's that magic REM period when dreams happen for both dogs and humans alike.

As for what pooches dream about, well, it probably won't surprise you that they tend to dream about stuff dogs are interested in their awake life, too (think chasing squirrels and rabbits, playing with a tennis ball, maybe getting a steak that accidentally fell off a table).

And yes, dogs, like humans, can also have nightmares, which may have been what was happening to this Golden Retriever.

Though you may feel inclined to wake them up if you see them having what looks like a scary dream (they may be twitching or moving a lot), you may want to take a moment.

A dog can have a negative reaction to someone waking them, just like some adults and children.

The reason some dogs, especially puppies and older dogs, move a lot when they sleep compared to humans is because the pons—the part of the brain that prevents your muscles from moving when you sleep—is less developed in puppies and doesn't work as well in older dogs.

We took our Corgi, Tater Tot, to doggy daycare when she was a chaotic little maniac in need of puppy interaction, and for a while, she loved it. Named "Pet of the Month" multiple times over, Tater had a blast... until she didn't. To this day, we aren't sure what exactly happened that changed her mind from begging to hang with her fur friends to refusing to get out of the car when we got there.

For some pups, daycare is a fantastic way to socialize, practice training, or work on obedience while burning energy. They may even find love! For others, it has the opposite effect, and they're overwhelmed.

Even if they liked going at one point, it's common for a change in attitude once they start maturing. Maybe they'd rather be home than overstimulated, fearful, or stressed out if they deal with separation anxiety.

That said, Opie is just a sweet boy who isn't a daycare fan, and that's OK! He's still a good boy, just as Tater is still a good girl (with or without daycare cred)!

Dogs and cats often become besties when they're under the same roof. Differences seem to go to the wayside as time passes and they find more common ground. Before you know it, they have a lifelong bond.

This feline fur baby is obviously attached to her Dachshund brother, Beowulf, and seems to know he needs extra support.

In the TikTok from @auua.lisa, the sweet orange and white cat stared lovingly at her Doxie brother and has recently been sticking close by.

"Ever since my 20-year-old dog started hospice, my cat hasn't left his side," the onscreen text explained, with the caption adding, "It's amazing how cats just know, she never did this until recently."

Clips of the cat staying near Beowulf revealed her concern. Followers were moved by the cat's compassion and the love between the two siblings.

"Argh my heart — I swear cats sense these things, they are so in tune with those they love," one shared.

"Incredibly intuitive animals. They grieve and understand just like we do," another remarked.

"Perfection and unconditional love," a follower noted.

"More healing and more love — they're both beautiful," someone commented.

How Bonded Pets Sense Illness

Whenever someone in my family is sick or feeling sad, both of my dogs go into caretaker mode. Dogs seem to have a natural capacity for empathy, and cats have it as well.

Animals possess a powerful sense of smell. Cats have approximately 200 million odor-sensitive cells in their noses, allowing them to sniff out chemical changes in body odor that occur when someone is sick. Illnesses such as infections, diabetes, and various cancers can change the body’s scent, prompting more protective behavior in your fur babies.

When your cat senses that their loved one is ill or feeling down, they may show their concern through some of these behaviors:

• Clinginess or increased attention, such as following you around or cuddling more than usual.
• Gentle vocalizations, like soft meows or purring near afflicted areas.

• Change in appetite or grooming habits, reflecting stress or empathy.

This caring kitty is a wonderful example of the compassion cats exude, and will most likely stay on watch over Beowulf for as long as he needs her.

The caption explained that Kruella is rapidly growing and changing, giving viewers a glimpse into her puppyhood transformation.

And honestly? She already looks unbelievably majestic.

Dogs with two different colored eyes have a condition called heterochromia, which occurs when varying amounts of melanin affect the coloring of each eye.

Heterochromia can appear in many breeds and is often completely harmless.
