My two Rescue Pups can go from adorable to hilariously offended with just a glance. But one Shelter Dog in Pennsylvania is taking that talent to a whole new level.

Meet Roxie, a sweet Rescue currently recovering from surgery at the Erie Humane Society. While she rests comfortably in the office with her human caretakers, her perky, floppy ears and exceptionally expressive brow create the most perfectly judgmental face you’ll see all week. It’s pure cuteness overload.

That furrowed brow and soulful stare already have viewers cracking up and hitting replay.

Research Shows Dogs Evolved a Special Muscle for ‘Puppy Dog Eyes’

Roxie’s expressive face isn’t just adorable, it’s also backed by science. According to Smithsonian Magazine, research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dogs evolved a specialized muscle, the levator anguli oculi medialis (LAOM), which allows them to raise the inner eyebrows. That movement creates the wide-eyed “puppy dog eyes” expression people instantly recognize.

Researchers found that wolves, dogs’ closest wild relatives, largely lack this muscle. Experts believe humans unconsciously selected for the trait during domestication because those exaggerated looks trigger nurturing instincts and strengthen the human-dog bond.

It also appears to help shelter dogs get noticed. Studies found that dogs who frequently use this eyebrow-raising expression are often adopted more quickly, making Roxie’s dramatic little face even more notable.

Roxie is still recovering and is expected to become available for adoption soon through the Erie Humane Society (2407 Zimmerly Rd, Erie, PA 16506). Bases on her hilarious expressions alone, she probably won’t have to wait long to win somebody over.

Senior dogs are so sweet, and getting to be with them in their twilight years is a truly special experience.

Jazz (@jazzincharmcity on TikTok) is a Baltimore social media specialist who rescued a senior German Shepherd, Vader. According to a video shared to TikTok, Vader had a cat in his former home, and he still has a big space in his heart for feline friends. Whenever Jazz and Vader stop by their local Ace Hardware, Vader is extremely eager to say hello to the resident shop cat.

Vader is extremely polite in the video, despite clearly wanting to play with the shop cat. The pair sweetly follow each other around the store, completely content with being in each other's company. Commenters on social media were enamored with the interaction, almost as much as Vader was with the Ace cat.

How Dogs and Cats Form Bonds

The stereotypes are not always true. 1. They Provide Testimonials 

Whether you’ve found your next dog sitter through a friend or family member or through a pet care site, it’s important to know the sitter’s previous experience. The best dog sitter for you will have colleagues or previous customers who can vouch for their experience and work ethic.

“One thing I can't overstate the importance of is genuine testimonials," says Bethany Wallace, marketing director of Yourgi. "If you can find positive reviews from other pet owners, you can generally be confident that you'll be getting a good pet sitter. With sitters in particular, trust is key. You're not just trusting these people with your pets. You're letting them into your home." 

2. They Agree to an Initial Consultation at Home

“Pet parents should also schedule an initial consultation or meet-and-greet in their home, so they can see the pet sitter interact with their dog,” says Beth Stultz-Hairston, president of Pet Sitters International. “This allows both the pet parents and the pet sitter to ensure they are a good fit before confirming services.” 

3. Your Dog Takes a Liking to Them

When interviewing a potential pet sitter, you should keep a close eye on how your dog interacts with the person and whether or not there’s an initial warm-up. While the relationship might improve over time, a good first meeting is usually a good sign that your furry friend trusts this person.

Ivan Petersel, CPDT-KA and founder of Dog Virtuoso, says that “a dog sitter that asks for emergency contacts and your veterinarian” and “asks questions and wants to go over all of the little details" are good signs that the dog sitter takes their role seriously and is truly interested in your dog’s needs. "They should be curious about your dog's habits, likes, dislikes, allergies, etc.,” Petersel says.

5. They Don’t Dismiss Your Pup's Needs

“It's a red flag if they seem dismissive,” Petersel says. “I've seen situations where the owner is explaining everything and the sitter isn't paying attention. Instead, they are saying things like, ‘Don't worry.' 'It'll be fine.’ etc.” 

This notion also applies when asking your dog sitter for updates throughout their shift. Any dog sitter who doesn’t communicate with pet parents is an immediate red flag.

“They can ask their local veterinarian or other trusted pet professionals if there is a local professional pet sitter they recommend,” Stultz-Hairston says. “The great news is that dog parents don’t have to rely on untrained friends or family members or dog lovers with limited experience that they found on an app. Local professional pet-sitting services are available to ensure dogs get the expert care they need while owners are away.”

Trusted organizations like Pet Sitters International and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters provide tools to vet pet sitters, as well as give pet parents all of the information on prospective sitters that they need to make an informed decision.

"This myth about older dogs really needs retiring,” says Ali Smith, dog trainer and behavior consultant at Rebarkable who is a dog mom of three senior dogs, including one with a wheelchair.

“The phrase ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is wildly outdated,” she explains. “Dogs can learn at any age, and I’ve personally helped a 13-year-old rescue dog work through reactivity.”

Smith believes the ability to learn doesn’t vanish with age. “Older dogs may need patience, consistency and sensible expectations, but they’re absolutely still capable of learning new skills, routines and confidence,” she says.

Chris Edge, founder at K9 Edge Dog Training, adds that learning is driven by repetition, clarity and emotional state, not youth. “In many cases, older dogs actually learn faster because they’re less impulsive and more capable of settling into consistent patterns,” he says.

Myth 2: Older Dogs Won’t Bond With a New Owner

Dogs have an extraordinary capacity for connection, Smith says. “An older dog may not show affection in the same bouncy, obvious way a puppy does, but that doesn’t mean the bond isn’t there,” she describes. “Some dogs show love by leaning against you, following you from room to room, resting near you, checking in quietly or simply choosing to feel safe in your presence.” So, when it comes to adopting an older dog don't believe that myth.

The truth about adopting a senior dog is, with time, kindness and predictability, an older dog can bond strongly with a new owner. “Some of the strongest relationships I’ve ever seen have come when a new owner provides safety and connection to a dog who has either lost it, or has never seen it at all,” Edge says. “In fact, many older dogs form very strong attachments because they’re seeking stability. When a new owner provides clear structure and calm leadership, the bond can develop quickly and deeply.”

Myth 3: Older Dogs Come With Too Many Health Problems

One of the biggest myths about adopting a senior dog is that older dogs are always unhealthy or high-maintenance. While age can bring some changes, many senior dogs remain active, happy, and full of life for years. In some cases, they can even be more predictable and easier to care for than younger dogs still growing and developing.

Experts say a dog’s individual health matters far more than their age. A simple vet check, combined with proper care, exercise, and realistic expectations, can make a huge difference in quality of life. With the right support, many older rescue dogs enjoy long, comfortable, and active lives in their forever homes.

“Some older dogs stay strong, mobile and happy until very late in life, while some younger dogs can have complex health needs,” Smith says. “A vet check, good management, appropriate exercise and realistic expectations matter far more than the number on their adoption paperwork.”

Myth 4: Older Dogs Aren’t a Good Fit For Families

One of the biggest myths about adopting an older dog is that senior dogs don’t fit well into busy family homes. In reality, older dogs are often calmer, gentler, and easier for children to be around than high-energy puppies. Many families are surprised to learn that adopting a senior dog can actually make the transition into pet ownership much smoother.

Myth 5: Older Dogs Are Only Suitable for People Who Are Home All Day

While it may seem like older dogs aren’t the best fit for people with active, busy lives, Smith challenges that notion and says that's one myth about senior dogs as older dogs nestle seamlessly into these lifestyles if their needs are met.

“Many older dogs are past the exhausting puppy stage and are happier to lounge, nap and enjoy a steadier daily rhythm,” she explains. “For people who work longer hours, have mobility limitations or want a dog who doesn’t need constant high-energy entertainment, an older dog can be a really thoughtful, realistic choice.”

Bonus Myth: Adopting an Older Dog Means You Won’t Get Much Time With Them

“This is such a heartbreaking misconception because it puts people off giving older dogs a chance,” Smith says. “A nine-year-old dog isn’t necessarily at the end of their life.”

Many dogs live several more happy, full years, especially with proper care and enrichment. “Five years with a dog isn’t ‘barely any time,’” she continues. “It’s thousands of walks, sofa naps, routines, greetings, shared moments and love.”

The value of a relationship with a dog, Smith adds, isn’t measured by how young they were when it started. It’s measured by the depth of the bond you build together, no matter when it begins.

Dachshunds aren't built for subtlety. They are long, low, and powered almost entirely by unreasonable confidence. So when one rolls into a BMX event on a skateboard and drops down the stairs like she has sponsorship obligations, it doesn't feel shocking so much as inevitable. Of course, a Dachshund would do this. Of course, she would land it. Of course, she would immediately look around like the crowd should be louder.

She came to remind everyone at the skate park that greatness can arrive 6 inches off the ground and still embarrass the rest of the field.

In the video, she skates down a set of stairs at a BMX event with the kind of calm, locked-in focus that makes it even funnier. There's no hesitation. No wobbly “maybe I will try.” She just goes. And the second she lands, you can tell she knows exactly what she has done. One viewer pointed out how much she seems to hype herself up after the trick, and yes, that's absolutely part of the magic here. She doesn't just land it. She celebrates it with her whole tiny body.

Another person noticed the same thing everybody else did, which is that Rowdy looks incredibly proud of herself. Not relieved. Proud. That's an important distinction. This isn't a dog who accidentally pulled something off and then got lucky. This is a dog who seems fully aware that she just cleared the stairs and improved everyone’s day in one move.

It isn't just a “dog on a skateboard.” We have all seen novelty before. This is swagger. This is execution. This is a Dachshund showing up to a BMX event and somehow becoming the coolest girl there without even needing opposable thumbs.

And honestly, I respect it.

My dog, Lola, is also into extreme sports, but we are more of a mountain biking household. She would absolutely watch Rowdy do this, decide she is now part of the action sports community, and then spend the next 3 hours trying to prove she belongs in a Red Bull commercial.

The best part about Rowdy is that she doesn't seem surprised by any of this attention. She has the exact energy of someone who has always known she was special and is frankly pleased the rest of us are finally catching up. The stairs, the crowd, the whole event, none of it rattles her. He just drops in, lands the trick, and carries on like a professional.

Which, at this point, feels accurate.

In the TikTok from @abirdnamedkevin, the green-and-yellow Lovebird proudly stood at the top of a cabinet where dog treats were kept. Kevin had half of his body in the biscuit container as he started grabbing some with his beak. Once he got a good hold of a biscuit, Kevin dropped it to his canine siblings.

"Kevin has been secretly feeding our dogs treats," the onscreen text explained. "He even checks if he succeeded."

The benevolent bird stood over the cabinet and waited to see that they were properly fed. Once his efforts were confirmed successful, Kevin performed a little happy dance to celebrate a job well done.

Followers got a kick out of Kevin's 'covert mission' and raved over his dedication to give his canine siblings some extra snacks.

Rescuing a dog is one of the most rewarding things a human can do for dozens of reasons, but one of my personal favorites is the simplest. You get to teach them how to play! You get to watch them learn what toys are, what toys they like, and how they personally like to use them.

One Beagle was recently rescued from an animal testing lab, and he had never even seen a toy before. He had hardly ever been out of a cage, even, so getting to play was out of the question... And yet, he found his favorite toy almost immediately:

Zoe Rosenberg is so kind for rescuing this sweet Beagle boy. Cases like his are so complex, and a lot of people would be very fearful of rescuing a dog like him, but not her! He'll get to live a safe and happy life because she's so brave. In addition to teaching him what toys are, Chester has also learned:

• What a bed is.
• How to sleep in one.
• How to run.
• How to walk.

He was rescued less than a month ago from a place called Ridglan Farms, which is notorious for specifically breeding Beagles to sell off for testing in biomedical facilities. Chester has a tattoo on the inside of his ear: before he was Chester, he was a number.

Chester's favorite toy has turned out to be his tennis ball. It doesn't make any noise, which is good for him, since he's not used to it. He can roll it and chase it! He's so good at running, you have to see:

How to Find Rescue Lab Beagles

If Chester's story tugged at your heartstrings as much as mine, you must be thinking about the best way to help get one of these sweet dogs a loving home! I have three dogs, absolutely no room for a fourth, and yet I want to rescue every lab Beagle out there!

If you'd like to rescue a lab Beagle, the best way to do it is find a lab or a lab partner facility. For example, Ridglan Farms frequently has Beagles leaving their labs to go to forever homes, via a partner organization. Typically, labs will partner with a shelter or rescue organization to place retired dogs. Some of the "top dogs," so to speak, are:

1. The Beagle Freedom Project (they rescue Ridglan Farms Beagles often).
2. The Beagle Alliance (based in Canada, but accepts US applicants).
3. Kindness Ranch.

It might be a little tough to find a dog in your area, depending on where you live, but a lot of places are willing to help arrange transport. If they're not, many welcome out-of-state adopters to make the trip to save dogs. It's worth it if you can! Just look at sweet Chester!

Asking a pet whether they are responsible for a mess usually elicits a very specific reaction. The ears drop slightly, the tail thumps against the floor, and they attempt to look as innocent as possible. In some cases, though, they will wag their tail as they are as happy and as innocent as ever.

As his mom explained in a Reddit post to r/GuiltyDogs, Spencer was probably having too much fun in the backyard. And as a result, the black Scottish terrier turned gray and brown. In the post, she says, "I do not have a gray dog—or brown dog. I have a black dog, and he knows what he did."

So, she asked him several times, "Were you digging in the garden?" Through it all, Spencer was wagging his tail like he was proud of his work.

The Black Dog Somehow Came Back Gray

Things got even funnier once she rubbed his back and realized dust was literally coming off his fur.

At some point during the day, the black dog had apparently rolled around so aggressively in dirt that he transformed into a strange mix of gray and brown.

His mom knew what happened, but asked him anyway, "Did you just play in the poof dirt with the donkeys?"

And his face suggested he absolutely did.

Reddit Launches His Legal Defense

The internet wasted no time declaring the dog innocent despite overwhelming physical evidence.

"I wholeheartedly believe that he had a dusty snoot because of ownership neglect," one commenter joked. "In no way is there any valid photographic proof of digging or misplaced dirt."

Another added, "Your 'evidence' is entirely circumstantial. He's obviously innocent."

Meanwhile, one pet owner compared the dusty transformation to their own corgi, who apparently enjoys launching unauthorized backyard excavation projects.

"She has a tendency to start construction projects in the backyard without permits," they wrote, "and roll in the holes."

Honestly, every dog owner knows a dog like this.

As ridiculous as the situation looked, dogs rolling in dirt is actually pretty common behavior.

Dogs love it because dirt feels so cool on their skin, especially during warm weather. Some do it because it masks their scent, a trait they inherited from their wolf ancestors.

And of course, sometimes, it is pure joy. It feels good to roll in the dirt. Dogs love to have fun, and diving into grass or dirt is a way to blow off steam.

The Bath Was Inevitable
