In the TikTok from @oreominibernedoodle, the precious puppy got a new bone to play with and couldn’t contain his excitement. Oreo literally hopped and pranced and rolled on floor, strategizing the best way to grab on to the bone. The canine cutie basically invented his own little game.

While his playful antics were extremely charming, the feisty fur baby’s multi-colored coat was what captured your eye. A mix of mottled cinnamon, ivory white, and midnight black, Oreo’s fur looked like a mound of moving cotton balls. The poofy perfection of the pup’s coat gave him a plush toy look, almost like he was assembled in a factory.

Followers likened Oreo to everything from a household cleaning appliance to the iconic puppets on Sesame Street:

How to Care for a Bernedoodle’s Curly Coat

Bernadoodles have three types of coat: straight, wavy, and curly. The curly coat favors the mixed breed’s Poodle heritage and is considered hypoallergenic due to very little shedding.

Why Allergies Actually Start in Late Summer

Although you may know that fall is full of allergens for dogs, that doesn’t mean your furry friend can’t experience fall allergies while the summer sun is still out. Even during late summer, allergens can still run rampant on your dog’s system, making them itchy and uncomfortable during those last days of summer.

Places that get rain early can also create a moldy mix that may trigger a dog’s allergies. Even locations that are dry are prone to pollen in the air. While allergies in humans are often airborne, dogs typically react to allergens through their skin and paws instead of their respiratory system.

5 Early (and Sneaky) Signs of Canine Seasonal Allergies

Allergies in dogs don’t look the same as those in humans, meaning it’s easy to miss them at first glance. Although some of the symptoms can be mistaken for other health issues, these five early signs of canine seasonal allergies are subtle ways you can start to deduce whether or not your furry friend is experiencing allergies this time of year.

One of the first telltale signs that your dog is experiencing allergies is a subtle itch. While your dog may scratch, it might not be normal scratching. In fact, it may often look like sudden increased grooming, like paw licking or chewing, says Laura Wilson, DVM, Dipl. ACVD, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist and advisory board member at JustFoodForDogs.

Other types of scratching might look like a frog-dog crawl, face and ear scratching, or spinning. All of these are signs from your dog that they’re uncomfortable in their skin and may need some help to relieve the itching.

Ear Infections

Another sign that your dog is dealing with allergies is an increase in the number of ear infections they deal with in a short period of time. While it’s normal for dogs to get ear infections from time to time, it’s worth noting when they start to deal with more recurrent infections within a shorter time frame because it may signal seasonal allergies.

Skin Changes

Areas around the armpits, groin and stomach may change when your dog is experiencing allergies. If you notice more “hot spots,” it’s often a sign that your dog is scratching or licking these areas more often than usual, and it may be due to canine seasonal allergies.

If your dog suddenly can’t sit still and seems to be moving from room to room with no purpose, there’s a good chance something is going on. Dr. Berdugo recommends alerting your vet if they suddenly become restless and overall seem uncomfortable with themselves.

Dogs with allergies will typically experience skin barrier issues, which may cause a thinning coat. While shedding can be normal, a sudden thin coat is a sign of something else going on. Even if their coat still looks shiny, thin fur is not a symptom to ignore.

Trying to differentiate between allergies, fleas and anxiety in dogs is hard for anyone, even professionals. As Dr. Berdugo says, getting a clear diagnosis can be complex, especially because there may be overlapping issues happening.

When it comes to allergies, symptoms tend to focus on the paws, face, ears, belly and limbs, and they will usually happen at about the same time each year.

Fleas can be a symptom of allergies, which can cause allergic symptoms such as itching. Even if you don’t see a flea on your dog, a flea’s saliva can cause an allergic reaction.

Anxiety typically tends to show up in dogs as overgrooming or intense licking in one particular area. Licking in one spot can be their idea of self-soothing. It’s important to note that anxiety may occur with any of the other issues, and it doesn’t mean they’re mutually exclusive.

3 Vet-Approved Ways to Give Your Dog Immediate Relief at Home

Watching your dog suffer from allergies can be difficult, especially if you feel like there’s nothing you can do. Thankfully, there are a few vet-approved ways to give your dog some allergy relief at home so they can get a break from their symptoms.

1. Wipe or rinse your dog after outings.

If you and your dog like to spend time outdoors, the best thing you can do to reduce allergens is to wipe down their paws and fur. Dr. Berdugo recommends wiping down these areas, especially if they’ve been walking in areas that are prone to pollen. This can help them avoid allergic reactions before they may seriously irritate the skin.

2. Bath your dog regularly.

Keeping your dog’s coat clean is one of the best ways you can help keep allergies down, according to Dr. Wilson. To do this, make sure you’re bathing your furry friend as regularly as their breed allows. In cases of mild irritation, use a vet-approved shampoo to remove allergens from their skin.

3. Consider adding supplements to help their skin self-care routine.

Dr. Wilson also adds that not every antihistamine will work for all allergies, so you’ll want to get a veterinarian recommendation for what medication may help your dog and their specific needs.

However, they’re often more subtle about it than their canine counterparts, which can confused some pet parents and make them think they don’t have a stong bond with their feline family member. After all, once you learn what cats do when when they care for you, you’ll be able to spot the signs more easily. “Cats can associate people with safety, comfort, food, play and positive interactions, and many cats genuinely seek out their favorite people for companionship and affection,” Dr. Vasudevan explains. “While cats may show affection differently than dogs, research and everyday behavior make it clear that cats can form strong social bonds with their human caregivers.”

You may not realize it, but your cat could be sending you love notes daily through their behaviors. Which ones? Dr. Vasudevan revealed things cats do when they’re trying to tell you they feel like they have a special bond with you that runs deep.

1. They follow you around the house

If your cat follows you from room to room—and their food and water dishes are full—Dr. Vasudevan shares that it could be their sweet way of saying, “I just want to be wherever you are.”

She explains this clingy-but-cute behavior can be a sign that your cat enjoys your company and feels secure around you. “Your cat may not be saying, ‘I love you‘ out loud, but they may be communicating, ‘I want to be wherever you are,” Dr. Vasudevan says. “It can be a sign that they enjoy your company and feel secure around you. Cats are naturally curious, so following you can sometimes simply mean they want to know what you’re doing.”

 2. They display a “question mark” tail

If you ever look at your cat and wonder, “Does my cat love me?“ you’re not the only one. However, figuring out the answer can be as simple as paying attention to the shape of their tail. In fact, Dr. Vasudevan says that when a feline has a “question mark” tail, which is when it is upright with a slight curl at the end, it’s a form of communication. This form of body language is usually overlooked by pet parents, however, it reveals a lot.

“This tail position is commonly associated with a cat who feels comfortable and is happy to greet you,” Dr. Vasudevan explains. “If yoru cat comes over to rub against your legs afterward, that’s an even stronger sign that they are enjoying the interaction.”

Therefore, you should take that as a clue that your cat has nothing but good feelings about you.

3. They show off their lovey-dovey side

If you know, you know: Cats don’t voluntarily seek cuddles from just anyone, which is often why they get reputations for being standoffish. However, if you have a cat, you probably know there’s a side to many felines that’s the total opposite of that. So what’s it mean if a cat actually wants to cuddle you? Dr. Vasudevan says it’s a strong indication that they trust and enjoy being around you.

“Cats are individuals, so ‘cuddling‘ can look different from one cat to another,” the vet adds. “The important part is that your cat is choosing to be close to you, which is a meaningful sign of comfort and trust.”

4. They want to chat with you

Talk about adorable. Adult cats typically meow to communicate their feelings (among other things) with humans, according to Dr. Vasudevan. As a result, if your cat is constantly chatting with you, they may be seeking your attention, which can be a sign of attacment that you might not realize.

“Cats also develop unique vocalizations specifically for communicating with their favorite people,” Dr. Vasudevan explains. “If your cat greets you with a meow, it may be their version of engaging socially with you.”

5. They lick your hand

A cat has their own way of expressing itself and as a cat parent, you may not pick up on those signs first and be confused by them even.

Because of that, if your Maine Coon or Ragdoll comes over and licks your hand, just know there’s probably a loving reason behind their cat behavior. Dr. Vasudevan notes that cats lick our hands for many reasons, including simply enjoying the taste or texture. However, she adds that cats lick one another as a form of social grooming. Some felines take it a step further and lick to let their humans know, “I love you.”

“They may be treating you like part of their social group,” Dr. Vasudevan adds.

7. They bring you toys to play with

Cats make for the sweetest playmates. If your cat brings you a toy, consider yourself lucky and adored. In fact, vets say this a way cats show they are fond of you without saying a word.

“When a cat brings you a toy, they may be inviting you to participate in one of their favorite activities, which can be play,” Dr. Vasudevan says. “Some cats also carry toys around as part of their natural hunting behavior and may bring them to a person they trust or associate with positive interaction. It’s often a sign that they see you as an important part of their world.”

Since playing is an important way to keep a cat physically and mentally stimulated, Dr. Vasudevan suggests encouraging playful behaviors to help build your overall bond and connection with your furry family member.

6. They purr around you

“Why do cats purr?” is something a lot of people queston. Experts say you can think of it as one way cats say ‘I love you’ in their own subtle language. However, once you decode this cat behavior, you’ll smile each time you catch your furbaby doing it.

“A cat who purrs while relaxing with you may be expressing that they feel comfortable and safe in your presence,” Dr. Vasudevan explains. “Many cats purr during petting, cuddling or other positive interactions.”

If you’ve never been around Goldendoodle puppies, you may be surprised by how distinct their coats can look compared to other dog breeds. In fact, many say they have a resemblance to caramel popcorn, and it’s easy to see why.

“I can definitely see the caramel popcorn thing with Goldendoodle puppies,” says Loverseed. “You get the golden color, all the fluffy bits and those little curls going in every direction. Therefore, when you have one, it’s like a piece of popcorn has grown legs and started running around your house.”

The good news is, he says this adorable look isn’t just something Goldendoodle pups have, it’s something that they can keep into adulthood as well. However, it varies dog to dog.

“Some adults keep a similar shaggy look, but you can also end up with a much curlier or straighter coat,” he explains. “That’s the thing with a cross. You don’t know exactly how that puppy coat will finish up.”

So, when it comes to Goldendoodle care, what’s the best way for pet parents to go about looking after their curlyshaggy coats? Loverseed shares his biggest tip for Goldendoodle owners is to get their pups used to having someone brush them when they are young.

“I would spend a little bit of time on that every single day from when they are young,” he says. “Show them the brush, do a couple of strokes, touch their feet and ears, give them a reward and finish. It might only take a minute. That is still much better than waiting until their coat is tangled and then expecting them to stand there for a massive groom that they have never experienced before.”

Because these curly-haired dogs have a different texture of hair than other breeds, he reveals that as a dog mom or dad, you do need to know how to brush a Doodle the right way. Otherwise, you won’t be able to keep their golden-brown fur from becoming matted and messy. So, how do you groom a Goldendoodle?

“You do need to brush and comb through the coat properly, because going over the fluffy top can miss knots underneath,” Loverseed instructs. “If it gets badly matted, I wouldn’t be trying to drag a brush through it at home.”

Instead, he says it’s good to get advice from a local groomer. “I would get a good groomer to show you what tools your dog’s particular coat needs and to let you know how often they want to see your dog,” he notes.

Besides being pretty and having a unique look, it’s best to know what you can expect if you decide to add a Goldendoodle to your family. That way, you can make sure they are happy and healthy under your care. After all, these fluffy dogs are much more than just pretty companions. So what do you need to know before bringing home a Goldendoodle puppy of your own that you might not expect?

“They can be incredibly smart and intelligent dogs,” Loverseed explains. Because of that, they can be quick learners and need activities to keep them from getting bored. One way you can go about that is to teach them tricks. By doing so, you’ll be able to bond with your Goldendoodle and keep them mentally stimulated.

“For me, I would be doing something with them each and every day,” Loverseed shares. “You can teach them a little trick, send them to a mat, get them finding a toy or work on their recall. It doesn’t need to be some huge session. Five minutes will give your dog something to think about and also help you form a much better relationship with them.”

So, while you may need to learn how to take care of their beautiful popcorn fur and take time out of your day to give them extra attention and make sure they get exercise, these pups can make amazing additions to families.

“They will need grooming, and while your puppy will still jump, mouth, steal things and need to learn how to be alone, if you put the daily work in, they can be fantastic dogs, but just remember their fluffy look isn’t the whole package,” Loverseed says.

Having hawks in your birdbath isn’t necessarily good or bad. While it points to a thriving ecosystem, which is always good, it doesn’t really say anything about the kinds of animals in your yard … Except, maybe, that there are lots of smaller birds and animals in your area.

The one thing that might happen is that, if smaller birds spot a hawk in your birdbath, they’ll steer clear for a little while until they’re sure the hawk has left. They don’t want to end up being lunch! Luckily, this hawk was definitely preoccupied …

We all get attached to items that may seem odd to others, but hold great sentimental value for us.

Can Dogs Have Pickles?

It seems that Goose isn’t alone in his love for pickles, as many fellow dog parents in the comments said their canines had an affinity for pickles.

“My dog is also a big cucumber boy,” one person wrote.

Another reiterated that their dogs love cucumbers.

So the question is, can dogs have pickles?

Also, just for context, a pickle is a type of cucumber that has been pickled, which changes the taste.

According to the American Kennel Club, pickles aren’t necessarily toxic for dogs, but they do have a lot of salt, which can be unhealthy for pups if they eat too many in a short amount of time.

An excess of sodium can cause side effects including seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, and ataxia (loss of balance).

Plus, pickles have other ingredients that can be harmful to dogs.

“Although pickles contain vitamins and minerals beneficial to us, the negative aspects far outweigh the benefits for a dog,” Dr. Carly Fox, Senior Veterinarian, Emergency and Urgent Care at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center of New York City, told The AKC. “Overall, they aren’t a great choice to feed your dog.”

It looks like Goose is carrying this pickle around like a toy more than eating it, but he and his mom should definitely be careful about his consumption of pickles.

It’s not just humans who have to have dental work done sometimes. Anyone with teeth can use a trip to the dentist, and anyone with teeth can sometimes have things go wrong with them. In some cases, that means getting a crown.

That’s exactly what happened to one cat. She had to get a crown, and somehow, she ended up with a $5,000 real-gold one. As you can imagine, that means they’re taking very good care of it! Her dad brushes it every single night:

Tofu the Cat broke her tooth clean in half while she was chewing on her dad’s personal belongings. The best part is that he was in a meeting when it happened, according to her mom, so he came out to a chewed-up present, a cat with a gold tooth, and a $5,000 charge on his credit card.

Since receiving her gold tooth, Tofu is back to normal. It functions exactly like a normal tooth. However, since it was $5,000, her parents have made sure to keep it clean and healthy to preserve it for as long as possible.

Tofu’s haters will say it’s fake, but it isn’t, and they’re having a ton of fun with it. A cat with a “grill” isn’t something you see every day, and they’re definitely getting their money’s worth with the jokes:

Is Getting Crowns for Cats Worth It?

In the comments on Tofu’s account, some people are wondering why they decided to go this route. Plenty of cats lose one or more teeth and end up living long and happy lives: this is a pretty huge expense!

Veterinarians almost never recommend crowns over extractions when it comes to cats. In most cases, it’s unnecessary: cats can live just fine without a tooth. In fact, a crown is typically more trouble than just pulling it. It can be painful. However, it may be done:

• On their fangs
• If most of the main tooth structure remains
• If the parent allows it

Losing a fang, as Tofu had, can impact a cat’s quality of life. They won’t be able to bite and tear, which could lead to them putting extra pressure on surrounding teeth. Plus, in Tofu’s case, she had a lot of existing tooth structure left, and they got to it in time to salvage it. So, grill it is!

Baby animals are my weakness. I don’t even care what kind of animal it is: if it’s a baby, I’m in love. Some of my favorites are puppies, baby pandas, turtle hatchlings, and most importantly, baby elephants.

The Zootastic Park in Troutman, N.C., is now home to three giant anteaters: Arya, Alf, and now, their baby. According to the zoo, he’s just a few days old, and he has many months to go on his mama’s back. He’ll be there for almost a year.

He doesn’t have a name yet, but hopefully, it will also start with an A. They’ll probably either name him when he’s a little older and know a bit more about him, or they’ll hold a naming contest. Lots of zoos do that: let patrons donate, suggest names, and then vote.

Below, Dr. Halligan explains everything you need to understand about the hidden dangers of dogs sticking their head out of the car window, car safety tips for driving with your dog and how to help your dog get used to riding in a car safely.

Keeping this information in mind and applying Dr. Halligan’s tips can make a major difference in your dog’s health and safety and prevent injury–or worse–from occurring.

The ‘Million-Dollar Vet Bill’: 3 Hidden Dangers of the Open Window

It may seem harmless, but there are some serious risks involved when your dog rides with their head out the window.

1. An injury from road debris

“First, flying debris can injure their eyes and face,” Dr. Halligan says. “At driving speeds, dust, sand, insects, gravel and other road debris can strike the eyes and potentially cause painful injuries. I’ve treated plenty of painful corneal ulcers that started this way. The same debris can lodge in the ear canal and set up an infection.”

2. The risk of them jumping out or falling out

There’s also the risk of your dog jumping or falling out of the window. “A dog can become excited by another animal, suddenly lean too far out or potentially get out through an open window,” Dr. Halligan says. “An abrupt stop or turn can also throw an unsecured dog around the vehicle. At 40–60 mph, that fall is often catastrophic—broken bones, head trauma or being hit by another vehicle.”

3. The wind may blow irritants at them

“Third, it exposes their ears and airways to high-speed wind and irritants,” Dr. Halligan warns. “That wonderful breeze your dog loves can carry dust and debris directly toward the eyes, nose and ears.”

4 Vet-Approved Ways to Secure Your Dog

For securing your dog, you want to look for two main criteria. “The gold standard is a properly fitted, crash-tested restraint,” Dr. Halligan says. Below are four reliable options Dr. Halligan recommends.

1. A travel harness

“A crash-tested travel harness that clips to the vehicle’s seatbelt system (look for Center for Pet Safety certification). This is my first recommendation for most dogs,” Dr. Halligan says.

2. A crate or carrier

Dr. Halligan recommends investing in “a hard-sided, well-ventilated crate or carrier that is large enough for the dog to stand, turn and lie down, then secured so it cannot slide.”

3. A cargo area barrier

Next, Dr. Halligan recommends a cargo area barrier plus a crate, which is especially useful if you have an SUV. “The barrier keeps the dog from flying forward; the crate adds extra protection,” Dr. Halligan says.

4. A booster-style carrier for small dogs

Finally, if you have a small dog, a crash-tested booster-style carrier that can strap into your backseat is the ideal choice.

The ‘Front Seat’ Myth: Why the Backseat Is Always Safer

While you may love to have your pup ride shotgun, it’s actually far safer for them to be in the backseat for a number of reasons.

For starters, let’s talk about the airbags. While they’re designed to protect humans, they may cause serious injury or even death when it comes to our doggies. “Front-seat airbags are built for adult humans—not dogs,” Dr. Halligan says. “If one deploys, it can seriously injure or even kill a pet in the passenger seat or on someone’s lap, even if the dog is wearing a harness.”

In addition to that, it comes down to basic driving safety; your pup in the front can be a major distraction. “The back seat also places dogs farther from the most common impact area in a frontal crash and helps reduce driver distraction, the same safety reasoning used for children under 13,” Dr. Halligan explains. “It also keeps dogs away from the dashboard and windshield and prevents them from interfering with the driver.”

And don’t even think about driving with a small dog in your lap. “Please don’t drive with a dog on your lap. It may look sweet, but an unrestrained dog can distract the driver and be seriously injured in a sudden stop or crash,” Dr. Halligan warns.

How to Train a Stubborn Dog to Accept a Seatbelt

“Most ‘stubborn’ dogs just need time and good treats. Once the routine is established, they usually hop in and wait to be clipped. Treat it like any other new skill—slow, positive and never forced,” Dr. Halligan says.

Below are some vet-approved tips from Dr. Halligan for getting your dog to use a seatbelt.

1. Choose the right time.

“Don’t introduce a restraint for the first time five minutes before a long road trip,” Dr. Halligan says. “Start at home and make it positive. Let the dog sniff the harness, then put it on for a few seconds and immediately give a high-value treat. Repeat until they look excited when they see it.”

2. Practice in a parked car first.

“Next, practice sitting restrained in a parked car,” Dr. Halligan says. “Then, try a very short drive around the block and gradually work up to longer trips. Praise and reward calm behavior.”

3. Associate driving with positive experiences.

“Pair the first actual drives with something they love—a favorite park or a friend’s house. Never make the first trip the vet,” Dr. Halligan says.

4. Use the right harness for your specific dog.

“Use a step-in style harness if they hate things going over their head. Keep the tether short enough that they can sit and lie down but not wander,” Dr. Halligan states. “Make sure the harness fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict normal movement or breathing. If the dog is fighting the restraint, check the fit rather than assuming they’re simply being stubborn.”

5. Try a crate instead.

“If they still fight it, consider a crate instead. Some dogs simply prefer the den-like security,” Dr. Halligan says.

6. Be patient and don’t give up.

“Don’t give up after one attempt,” Dr. Halligan says. “You’re teaching a new behavior, not winning an argument.”

When it comes down to it all, your dog’s happiness matters, but their safety is always top priority. “Your dog may think sticking their head out the window is the greatest thing on Earth, but loving something doesn’t make it safe,” Dr. Halligan says. “Let them enjoy the ride—just not hang out of it.”

Every September, someone posts a first-day-of-school photo—backpack strapped on, slightly nervous smile, ready for whatever the year brings. At Maricopa County Animal Care and Control’s West Shelter, a different class is waiting for theirs.

Fruit Punch is the band kid—marches to her own rhythm, is deeply committed to her interests and is more interesting than she initially looks. You just have to give her a minute.

Ruby is a junior varsity soccer player—athletic, eager to be on a team, fully prepared to run laps if that is what it takes. A family that likes being outdoors will get along with Ruby.

Copper is the student council president. He likes structure and has opinions and serious concerns about the current biscuit distribution policy and would like them addressed in writing.

Hurley is the drama kid—considerable emotional range, real need for acknowledgment, and total capacity for loyalty once he knows you are in his corner.

Prancer is a member of the speech and debate club—persuasive, quick on his feet, and almost certainly going to argue his way into a longer walk than anyone planned.

Bo Peep is in the robotics club—thoughtful, observant, and more interested in how things work than in making small talk.

“Their eyes are saying please take me home,” one commenter wrote in the shelter’s Instagram post.

Adolescent dogs are still developing physically and behaviourally, so their new families need to be patient and provide consistent training. Though some may be awkward, timid, or overwhelmed in the shelter, they may blossom once outside and settled in their forever home.

Cactus has been patient about a lot of things since becoming a foster sibling. Getting little Cowboy to understand tug-of-war tested even him.

In a new video from the family that first introduced the world to Cactus and his foster puppy, we see the famous rescue dog trying to do something he has done for years: play tug-of-war. Unfortunately, Cowboy is new to the game and doesn’t understand the basics. Thankfully, Cactus’ dad, Mike, is here to help the young pup.

Cactus Knows How This Game Works, But Cowboy Needs Help

Cactus started initiating play by bringing toys over to the puppy. He believes that his tiny friend is ready for some fun. Cowboy, meanwhile, still has to understand the rules.

That is when Mike steps in. He starts playing with Cactus, showing Cowboy the basics of the game. Then he gives him a coaching session, even telling him to growl “grrrr” during play.

He encouraged Cowboy to get involved and then brought the toy toward his mouth. Yet, the attempt failed.

Moments later, Cowboy runs toward Cactus and the plush toy and tries again. Another failed attempt. Cowboy gets the toy, but he still has not figured out what he needs to do to pull back.

Cowboy’s persistence pays off, as he finally gets to play tug-of-war with Cactus on his third attempt. He grabs the toy, starts pulling, and even adds his own “grrrr” to the game.

Just like that, he went from watching Cactus play to joining him in one afternoon. That might be a tiny milestone, but for a foster puppy, it feels enormous.

Cactus and Cowboy are Becoming Quite the Pair

This is not the first time this duo has caught people’s attention. In the last week, Cactus has become increasingly interested in the foster puppy, checking on him, staying close and trying to interact with him.

Plenty of his followers are waiting to see whether little Cowboy and his mom, Honey, will become permanent members of the household.

One fan said, “For the love of Cactus, Cowboy and Honey, tell the people what we’re all suspecting: Cowboy and Honey have found their fur-ever home and are now roomies with Cactus.”

Another joked, “Cactus, Cowboy and Honey. You could call your house the ranch.” And then one fan delivered the best reason to foster fail Cowboy, saying, “Dogs are pack animals. They need a friend to hang with.” Watching Cowboy figure out tug-of-war, we can see him having more fun with Cactus if they became a family.

Some dogs have to share the sofa, the toys and their human’s attention. In these U.S. cities, that may be the norm. With National Dog Day coming up on Aug. 26, new data from TrustedHousesitters has revealed which U.S. cities are least likely to have a one-dog household.

The surprising pick on the top? Bend, Ore., a city with a population of just over 100,000, where one in five households has multiple dogs. For comparison, in Brooklyn, N.Y., only 5 percent of the households have two or more dogs.

What Bend, Ore., Offers Pet Households

Located at the edge of the Cascade Range, Bend offers trail access from most neighborhoods. The city has a long history of attracting people with infrastructure built for being outside, and dogs follow that energy.

For years, Bend has been called Dog Town USA because nearly half of local residents own a dog, and half of those own more than one.

Here, pet parents can explore extensive trail networks, such as the Deschutes River Trail and Good Dog Park. Both places welcome dogs and allow them to freely roam and hike.

Making Sense of the Rankings

Looking at the full 20 city rankings, Bend leads the way, and outdoor cities dominate. Another Oregon city, Portland, is 14th on the list, with one in ten households owning multiple dogs.

California, Oregon, and Washington have eight of the 20 cities on the list. San Diego is the highest-ranked city in California for multi-pet households, at 19.31 percent.

Outdoor cities with smaller populations seem to be the perfect setup for a multi-dog household, with the top cities in the rankings including Bend, Ore.; Nashville, Tenn.; Austin, Texas; and Santa Fe, N.M.

Urban environments and small apartments do not offer the same infrastructure. That is why cities like Brooklyn and New York rank at the bottom.

Why Owning Two Dogs Might Be Easier Than One

Dogs living with a companion at home show lower stress levels when left alone compared to dogs living alone. Separation anxiety is one of the most common behavior problems in dogs, and adding a companion can address that cause.

The exercise math also works in your favor. Two dogs playing with each other on their own schedule and burning their energy is something you do not have time to match. Often, the second dog calms the first one.

Younger dogs learn faster with an older dog at home. Puppies watch a calm, trained resident and pick up the routine more quickly. They learn when to sit at the door, what behavior earns a response and the mealtime schedule. Senior dogs, on the other hand, act differently. A younger dog can revive their interest in play without demanding it.

It’s probably pretty common to think that cats are the cutest when they are kittens. This majestic creature has the most piercing green eyes and the fluffiest fur that does, in fact, make you want to squeeze it like it’s a big squooshy teddy bear. It’s a good thing Ragdolls are known to be gentle and affectionate—and so docile that they often go limp in their owners arms like, yes, ragdolls—so they will most likely not mind if you decide to hug them and carry them around like an actual teddy bear.   

But these are not the only reasons this cat is so special. Cinnamon Ragdolls, with their copper-hued fur, are very rare. The color results from a genetic mutation and is much less common than the seal or blue Ragdolls you usually see.

How Big Do Ragdoll Cats Actually Get?

When it comes to size, according to PetMD, Ragdolls are bigger than your average cat. They tend to be about the same height (9 to 11 inches, compared to 9 to 10 inches), but what they lack in height, they make up for in length and weight. They can weigh anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds—compared to the average 6 to 12 pounds. And unlike other cat breeds, both the male and females can grow to be that big—and will be happy being carried around in your arms like a teddy bear.

They do, however, mature slowly, so it will take them about four years to get to their full-grown size—or as this video clearly demonstrates, until they hit their true teddy bear status.

Homeless dogs have to overcome countless obstacles just to survive. From food scarcity and environmental hazards to illness and abuse, these canines endure massive challenges on a daily basis.

Niall Harbison tends to thousands of street dogs through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, and recently rescued a sweet puppy who was actually poisoned.

Harbison came to the aid of a Dachshund mix pup, whom he named Espresso Martini, after he was called in by local residents due to her failing health in mid-June. She had been poisoned and was close to death until Harbison brought her to Happy Doggo for the medical care she required.

The animal advocate was stunned by Espresso’s resilience and fighting spirit. The precious pup could barely stand up when she first arrived at the rescue, yet she refused to give up. Harbison shared her progress in a recent Instagram video.

“Two months ago, little Espresso Martini came in,” Harbison explained as he held the canine cutie. “She was so badly poisoned that she couldn’t even walk. We had to pump her stomach and she lost all power in her legs. We didn’t even think she was going to survive at one stage.”

Clips showed the critical condition Espresso was in when she first arrived at Happy Doggo, where the rescue’s medical team immediately went to work.

Espresso’s Hard Work Paid Off

The entire Happy Doggo team was dedicated to Espresso’s recovery and tended to her with daily physical therapy, exercise, and plenty of love and affection. The fearless fur baby was determined to heal and even “taught herself to walk again”. Though Espresso still doesn’t have the use of one front leg, she can run and play like a typical puppy.

But wait… there’s more! Harbison waited until the end of the video to share the best news of all. Espresso now has a new forever family in England. She was recently adopted by two dog groomers and will soon be flying out to her new home. Harbison raved over Espresso’s progress and happy new chapter.

“This is a miracle dog,” Harbison remarked. “She really should not be alive, never mind walking again.”

Harbison and Espresso celebrated the wonderful news with some smoked salmon and playtime in the yard.

“It’s a perfect happy ending for Espresso Martini,” he concluded. “She can walk and run and have the time of her life.”

Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina, and a retirement village for senior dogs.

Pepper waited for someone who never came. 💔 This tiny senior Chihuahua arrived at our shelter as a stray. We were able to locate her owner, spoke with them, and explained exactly how to reclaim her. And somewhere along the way, Pepper stopped being a little dog waiting to go home and became a little dog who needed us to find her a new one. Pepper also arrived with a ruptured globe, which is responsible for the appearance of her eye. Despite everything, she is such a sweet little soul. Because of her limited vision, Pepper can be timid if someone approaches too quickly from her blind side. In this video from the Montgomery Humane Society in Alabama, we meet 10-year-old Pepper. Though someone reached out and said that Pepper was their dog they had lost, that person never showed, so she’s still waiting for a family.

Judging by how fast this little lady is wagging that tail, it certainly seems like she loves people. Someone has to take her home!

Why Adopting a Senior Is So Rewarding

Adopting a senior dog can be a big challenge for a lot of reasons. Not only do they require more medical care and attention than many younger dogs do — and therefore can be more expensive — but it’s so hard to fall in love with a dog only to lose them a short time later.

But adopting a senior dog is also such a beautiful thing to do. Not only does Pepper’s story perfectly illustrate how heartbreaking it can be when they tend to be harder to find families for, but it really is such an honor to be able to help a dog through this phase of their lives.

And as Chewy points out, in many ways, some senior dogs can be easier to parent than puppies. You don’t have to potty train them, they already understand the way they should act in a household,

Add in the advantage that they usually have lower exercise needs and are down to snuggle on the couch anytime, and for some, a senior dog is going to make the perfect pet.

Charlie the Golden is trying to hide his face. He can’t believe this happened to him, and right before back-to-school season! What is he supposed to do on picture day?! His mom captioned the funny clip “#justiceforcharlie,” and I’m sure he agrees with her there.

This grooming appointment actually happened to him at the vet, and it definitely didn’t happen by accident. They likely needed to check out something on his skin, which led to him coming home with a pretty cool bald spot. He’s just going to try to lay low for a while.

When Is It Okay to Shave a Golden Retriever?

Charlie had just a small portion of his face shaved, most likely as part of an exam to check out something on his cheek. Other than that, he just gets regular grooming, which for Golden Retrievers is typically just haircuts.

A lot of people will shave their Golden Retrievers in the summertime, thinking it’s going to help keep them cool in the heat. However, it’s not necessary: their double coat actually helps keep them safe from the heat, and the fur keeps the sun off their skin. There are a few instances where shaving might be recommended, though:

• In cases of extreme fur matting
• If they have severe mange
• Before procedures
• Around their bottom to prevent messes, called a “sanitary shave”

In every case, if you’re thinking about shaving your Golden Retriever, you should always ask your vet first and make sure they agree. They might even offer to do it for you … But be careful. It might bruise the pup’s ego!

There are two kinds of dogs. The first would politely excuse themselves the second someone tried to put bunny ears on them.

The second looks at a three year old holding a sparkly princess dress and thinks, “Well…I guess this is my life now.”

Meet Ry Ry, a very large German Shepherd who graciously accepted a full princess makeover from the two smallest stylists in the house. His dignity may never recover, but his little humans clearly had the time of their lives.

When the video begins, Ry Ry is standing there with the patience of a saint wearing pink sunglasses, glittery bunny ears, ballet slippers that barely fit his enormous paws, a princess dress and enough costume jewelry to stock a Tiffany display case.
