We have all seen the memes, "You had one job." Well, Kaia the poodle didn't get it. Her parents posted on Reddit's r/poodles, saying she had 4/10 cooperation. But that made the photos that much funnier.

The Community Loved the Photos

Her parents revealed that the energetic puppy became obsessed with the balloon involved in the reveal. They have several pictures of the poodle attacking the balloon.

If you want your dog to be part of a milestone moment without ending up with footage of them dismantling it, a little planning goes a long way.

If you want them in the pictures, assign someone whose only role is managing the dog. That person holds the leash, delivers the treats, and keeps the dog's attention. It frees everyone else to actually experience the moment.

Short photo sessions usually work better than long ones. Bring some high-value treats to keep your dog's attention.

Dogs Do Not Care about the Plan, and We Love Them

Oliver the Weimaraner did exactly what he was bred to do. And for some reason, the Internet cannot agree on whether that was the right thing to do.

As his dad shared on Reddit's r/weimaraner, Oliver found a rabbit in the yard, caught it, and the photo made its way to social media. What his dad probably didn't expect was a divided comment section and a debate that was less about the dog and more about responsible ownership.

The post started simply enough, with Oliver's dad sharing that the dog discovered he could catch "smol rabbits." Some saw it as normal hunting behavior from a breed built for that purpose. Others viewed it as irresponsible dog ownership.

Weimaraners Are Hunting Dogs

Developed in the 19th century as all-purpose hunting dogs, they were bred to track, flush, and retrieve large game. Later on, the breed was refined for bird hunting, but the drive to chase and catch moving prey is part of the natural instinct.

Why Golden Retrievers Love Water So Much

Goldens are such water magnets, in part, because they were selectively bred in 19th-century Scotland to hunt and retrieve water birds. Over the years, this breeding made them essentially designed to be water dogs. Because of the selective breeding and the way Goldens are built, swimming just comes very naturally to them so heading to the water is essentially an instinct. In the TikTok from @franflight, Foxy lay motionless on the floor as a shelter staff member gave her some tender affection in the hopes of making her feel safe.

"Foxy is a dog fighting ring survivor," the on-screen text explained. "She's completely shut down."

The precious Pittie hadn't eaten in two weeks. After giving birth to multiple litters, Foxy was battling pyometra, a serious uterine infection, requiring emergency surgery.

"She's scared," the story continued. "She's confused."

As the NAWS staff member spent time with Foxy, gently petting her and speaking softly, the canine cutie slowly began to respond. She even leaned in to the young woman for closeness and eventually stood up to give an adorable tail wag and butt wiggle.

"With a little time and a little patience, you can tell all she wants is to be gently loved," the text read.

Foxy Hopes for a Forever Home

The 6-year-old canine has a mass on her neck that needs to be evaluated and most likely surgically removed. Since the shelter is a chaotic and somewhat stressful environment, Foxy would experience better emotional and physical recovery in a home to call her own.

In the meantime, the team at NAWS is focused on helping Foxy fully heal and committed to finding her a loving family.

"Owning a cat can be one of the simplest ways to add fulfillment and joy to your life," says veterinarian Dr. Jordyn Zoul. "At the same time, they can be incredibly social, attached to their person, loving and funny little roommates."

Still, she notes that cat ownership also comes with financial responsibilities that can quickly add up, especially during the first year.

Here's what to know about cats, their potential expenses, and how to keep them happy and healthy.

1. Cats Are a Long-Term Commitment

Cats can live well into their teens, and some even reach their early twenties. Before adopting a cat, it’s important to think about whether you are prepared for the long-term financial and emotional responsibility of caring for a pet throughout its entire life.

2. Veterinary Costs May Add Up Quickly

According to Dr. Zoul, kittens in particular may require several veterinary visits within their first few months of life. "If you’re getting a kitten (less than 1 year of age) and they’ve had no vaccines, you need to plan on being at the vet at least 3-4 times in the first 4 months of their life," she says.

Dr. Zoul says exam fees alone may range from $70 to $120 per visit depending on where you live, while vaccines and dewormers may add another $30 to $60 each appointment. She recommends planning for roughly $400 to $600 in initial preventive care costs, along with the cost of a future spay or neuter procedure.

3. Shelter Cats May Already Have Important Medical Care Completed

Adopting from a shelter or rescue organization can sometimes reduce upfront medical expenses. Dr. Zoul notes that many shelters vaccinate, microchip, and spay or neuter cats before adoption.

Before adopting a cat, check with the shelter or rescue to find out what (if any) medical care has already been completed for the cat you're interested in adopting. Be sure to also ask for any medical papers and microchip documents so you can have a record of what vaccines the cat has had, any medical procedures they've had and the microchip tracking information that's on file.

4. Your Home Needs to Be Prepared

Before your new cat arrives, stock up on necessary supplies ahead of time. According to the American Humane Society, cats need essentials like a litter box, food and water bowls, cat food, scratching posts, toys, grooming supplies and a safe place to sleep.

Subtle Ways Your Dog Is Asking for Help

Lip Licking

“Dogs lick their lips to calm tense situations and signal that they’re not a threat,” says Shawna Baskette, a dog behavior researcher. “Other dogs can read this, but most humans cannot. So the next time your dog licks their lips, hang back—they’re trying to tell you something. Give them space. If they come back to you for attention, you know they want it.”

Yawning

Unlike humans who use yawning to signal that they’re tired, dogs may use yawning as a way to show that they’re not OK. “Similar to lip licking, it’s pretty well established in the research that dogs yawn to de-escalate tension or express mild stress," Baskette says. "Like with the lip lick, give them some space when they yawn.” 

Looking Away

While sometimes our pups look away because they know they’re in trouble, other times it may be a sign that they need their personal space. Chris Edge, founder of K9Edge Dog Training, says that signs like looking away or avoiding eye contact may be a sign from your dog that means they’re “asking for distance” or that they’re telling you “please don’t come closer.”

Appeasement Grin

“If your dog shows their teeth, but in a way that resembles a human smile, and there are no aggressive behaviors like a growl, then they are likely telling you, 'I’m friendly and I mean no harm. Let’s be friends!'" Baskette says. "Also known as the submissive grin, it is more correctly referred to as the appeasement grin because that is exactly what your dog is trying to do. The grin is rare. Most dogs never do it. They use other appeasement signals like lip licking, looking away or yawning instead.”

The appeasement grin shows that not all signs from our dogs are meant to be aggressive or signs of worry.

Check the Tail

While many humans know that a tucked tail may signify a stressed or anxious dog, other tail movements are also important to know. 

“A wagging tail does not automatically mean a happy dog,” Edge says. “Fast, high, stiff wagging can indicate arousal or conflict just as easily as excitement.” 

Baskette adds that “when their wags are asymmetrical, wagging more to the right or to the left, your dog is communicating something important." She says that "when a dog wags their tail more to the right, they are comfortable and want to approach, but when a dog wags their tail more to the left, they are not comfortable and want to retreat from the situation.”

Shaking Off

While many pups like to shake off after a swim or bath, a dry shake can be a lot more telling. As Baskette explains, “When dogs shake, they are marking a transition from one activity to another. That transition could be the end of a stressful encounter, so the old saying (of ‘shaking it off’) is partially true, but typically it is any transition, not just a stressful one."

Inability to Take Food or Cues

When dogs sometimes refuse to pay attention to their human or don’t take a bite of their favorite foods, it’s not always indicative of a medical problem. In some of these cases, it may be a sign of stress or overwhelm. As Edge explains, “this is a key sign of an overwhelmed dog” and that it’s “time to leave.”

How to Become Fluent in Your Dog’s Body Language

Not only is it important to know these subtle signs, but it’s also vital that a pet parent learns their pup’s body language. “Becoming fluent in dog body language starts with slowing down and observing patterns instead of isolated moments,” Edge says. “Owners must watch for these general signs: Body looseness versus stiffness; weight shifting forward or backward; breathing changes; tail carriage and movement quality (not just wagging); ability to disengage and reorient; and recovery time after stress.”

Edge also says to trust your instinct. "Every owner I work with can sense exactly when their dog needs help or is going to ‘flip the switch,’" he says. "The key is to pay attention to what you see before that moment so we can be proactive to keep the dog from becoming reactive.”

While every dog is different, these subtle signs from your dog may help you get ahead of anything that might be bothering them. Knowing these dog behaviors may also help you remove them from anxious or stressful situations before they become problematic.

Throwing paws never looked so good! At just 3 weeks old, this crew of kittens has only just started blossoming into our new favorite soldiers, and already, they've made the world a better place.

During the first 6 months of a kitten's life, they gain about a pound a month, every month, reaching about 75% to 80% of their adult size.

Things slow down around 6 to 8 months, which is when they tend to "fill out," rather than grow any bigger. By a kitten's first birthday, they've usually hit their adult weight and size and have probably lost their kitten features.

Why Golden Retrievers Love Water

Obviously, these two Golden Retrievers love water, but why do they, and their entire breed, love water so much?

The answer is Goldens were bred to swim.

They were bred in 19th-century Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth to retrieve (it's literally in their name) from lakes and rivers where humans shot animals to fall into, such as ducks or geese, so they had to be good swimmers.

They are strong, excellent paddlers, as they had to be to be able to get the fowl that was floating in the middle of a lake or deep in a river.

The selective breeding traits that make them such strong swimmers include webbed feet and a water-resistant double coat that provides insulation and helps them stay warm in cold water.

They also have muscular chests, shoulders, and hindquarters, which make them extremely strong and capable swimmers.

According to PetMD, they are one of the top 10 swimming dog breeds.

Plus, they just enjoy being in the water, as these two Goldens can barely contain themselves!

If you've ever looked at a dog and thought, "there's no way they made a Doodle out of that," you are wrong. People have made a Doodle out of just about every dog breed there is! There are definitely some that are more popular than others, though.

One that does exist, though we don't see them very often, is the Frenchie-Doodle. It's a cross you almost never see, but the puppies in this video prove that the crossover between the breeds really does produce some precious pups:

According to Misty Levera, this was a total accident, and she does not condone purposefully breeding this mix. However, it happened, and the pups are absolutely precious. There are four of them, and they're actually Toy Frenchie-Doodles: it was a Toy Poodle who got her Frenchie pregnant.

These puppies are already pretty big, and they'll probably end up being mid-sized: Frenchies aren't small, so the Doodles will end up being slightly bigger than their Poodle dad! As for their energy levels, let's just say they're going to grow up to be a true handful.

What Are Frenchie-Doodles Like?

If you want one of these dogs, it's going to be kind of hard to find one. Most breeders won't produce this cross, so accidental encounters are one of the only ways to get your paws on one. That's probably for the best, even though the pups are so cute!

Frenchie-Doodles are energetic, loving dogs. They like to hang out with the people they love most, go for walks, and play. They're perfect for homes with kids and can get along well with other dogs and even cats! However, there are a few things to know about them:

In the TikTok from @honeybun.haku, Pandora had Honeybun completely wrapped in her arms as she gently bathed her with her tongue. You could barely see the bunny since the two were literally enveloped in each other, perfectly content in the close cuddle. Pandora seemed to fully commit to the mission of being a mom.

"She can't have babies of her own, so she adopted our bunny," the onscreen text explained. "At times, I wonder if she remembers when her mom used to groom her too."

Neither the pretty kitty nor the baby bunny was in any hurry to stop snuggling and both were obviously enjoying every moment together.

"That’s Pandora’s baby now," the caption shared. "She absolutely loves her bunny, and the same goes for Honeybun."

Followers were moved by the tender scene and commented on the siblings' bond.

"Awww she's making sure the bunny is clean," one noted.

"I can’t tell where the bunny starts and the cat ends," another posted.

"I have one cat that just ADORES my rabbits — she snuggles and grooms them every chance she gets," a follower shared.

"Oh it’s warm over there in that cuddle puddle — so snuggly!" someone gushed.

Why Cats Are Maternal Toward Other Animals

Cats have a very strong maternal instinct that kicks in immediately after giving birth. As Pandora demonstrated, this parental yearning can apply to baby animals that aren't their own. Female cats often become surrogate mothers to orphaned kittens, as well as puppies, bunnies, squirrels, and ducklings.

Sometimes the hardest decision at an adoption center is not whether to bring an animal home. It is figuring out how you are supposed to choose just one.

A woman on Reddit's r/rarepuppers shared the split-second decision that changed her family overnight. She had visited a local adoption center, spotted two tiny baby rabbits together in a basket, and felt something click. She was not leaving without both of them.

The Tiny Pair People Could Not Stop Talking About

One person wrote, "Omg they are literally so tiny!! You definitely made the right choice, they're going to be so happy together."

Another commenter said she had basically adopted her own animated movie. "You brought home your very own Disney movie! Your life is going to be filled with so many adorable moments."

They were not wrong.

The woman later revealed that the two had already been together before she found them. "Yes, they were together in the basket and I really didn't want to separate them. They'll be brothers forever."

Why Bonded Pairs Are Special

Rabbits are not solitary animals, even though people often treat them that way. In the wild, they live in groups. A rabbit kept alone can grow bored, anxious and withdrawn in ways that are easy to miss until the signs are hard to ignore.

Bonded pairs are different. They nap pressed against each other. They groom each other constantly. They follow one another around the house like little shadows who have decided that separation is not an option. Calmer, more confident, more active, bonded rabbits do better together.

When a pair arrives already bonded, the way these two did, you skip what can be a long and sometimes tense introduction process entirely. They already know each other. They already trust each other. You just give them a home to share.

The Moment That Made It Even Better

What sealed this story for everyone reading was one small detail the woman added at the end. Before the family left the adoption center, the staff sat down with her son and walked him through everything the rabbits would need: proper diet, handling, space, care.

She wrote, "Even the place where we adopted them gave my son a little talk about the care they need. We're very happy with them."

The Replies She Did Not See Coming

"You got the 6am version? I got the 4am model," shared one Redditor.

Another joined in: "Anytime between 4 and 4:30am is fair game. God, what I would give to sleep until 6."

Within minutes, her post had turned into a full support group for the chronically sleep-deprived. Dog parents from everywhere were filing in with their stories, each one more brutal than the last. The woman who posted looking for solutions suddenly realized she had it better than most.

And then came the comment that stopped everyone mid-scroll: "6am. Every day. No matter what. Though he does let me snooze a couple times. And if I get up and feed him, he lets me go back to bed. Such a nice owner I have."

That last line broke everyone.

Why Dogs Do This in the First Place

Here is the thing about dogs and morning routines: they are not trying to be annoying. They are just very, very good at learning patterns.

If your dog wakes you at 6 a.m. and you get up, feed them and start your day, congratulations. You have just taught them that 6 a.m. works. Dogs repeat what gets results. It is not manipulation. It is just excellent pattern recognition dressed in fur.

The good news is that you can change the pattern. Start by gradually pushing breakfast back by ten minutes at a time, staying boring and low-energy in the morning, and not rewarding the wake-up call with attention. You have to be consistent, but it will work.

The Trick That Actually Works

Why Dogs Are Fascinated by Wildlife Sounds

What's actually happening when Elroy locks onto those owls? His brain is doing exactly what his canine brain was designed to do.

"Crittering"—when dogs obsessively watch, track, or listen to wildlife—isn't a choice. It's their natural instinct. Before dogs were domesticated, they hunted for survival. That meant tracking animals by both sight and sound. Thousands of years later, those instincts are completely intact.

When Elroy hears owls calling, something ancient in his brain switches on immediately and takes over. He locks in. He focuses. He listens.

Rottweilers are especially wired this way. Originally working and herding dogs, Rottweilers have sharp innate instincts for tracking movement and sound in their surrounding environment. Elroy isn't actually being nosy. He's being exactly the dog he was bred to be. He’s paying attention because he needs to.

Here's the absolute best part: calm observation like Elroy's is actually one of the healthiest things a dog can do with those instincts. No chaos. No chasing the neighbor's pet. Just watching and listening while those ancient tracking instincts get a quiet, peaceful workout.
