Niall Harbison witnesses the resilience of dogs on a regular basis through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. Saving countless canines from abuse, illness, and injury, Harbison has seen these tenacious pooches overcome massive challenges even when the odds are against them. With love and the proper care, these dogs rise above their circumstances and show amazing courage and grit.

McFlurry is one of Harbison’s recent rescues. The canine cutie was hit by a car and suffered a critical injury, but she didn’t let that slow her down.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo told McFlurry’s story and how she landed at the Happy Doggo sanctuary.

“Life on the streets was tough,” the on-screen text shared as McFlurry limped along, trying to get her bearings. “After being hit by a car, she came to us needing an amputation.”

McFlurry’s front left leg was so badly broken, the only option was to remove it. After her surgery, the canine cutie didn’t waste time getting back in action.

“Now she’s finding her feet,” the story continued as McFlurry stood on her hind legs like a pro for balance and started impressively running around on three legs.

Safety Tips to Help a 3-Legged Dog

There are some precautions you can put in place to help a “tripod” dog safely navigate their environment, including:

• Place non-slip rugs around your home.
• Keep your dog’s nails and paw fur trimmed for better traction.
• Use accessories like customized harnesses and toe grips to help your dog feel more secure.

McFlurry isn’t letting a missing leg put a damper on her fun-loving spirit and has the full support of Harbison and his team throughout her healing journey.

“Learning to move on three legs takes a bit of time, but McFlurry is adjusting amazingly well,” the caption shared. “As you can see, missing a leg isn’t stopping her!”

Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina, and a retirement village for senior dogs.

Theo and Friends are all adorable, but the new kitten, Guiseppe, is my secret favorite. It might just be because I love Wilford Brimley. He really looks just like him! A lot of Persian kittens actually do look like Wilford Brimley, though. I think it’s the eyes.

In Guiseppe’s case, both the eyes and the mustache are making him give all the Wilford Brimley vibes. He looks like he’s about to go star in an iconic commercial for “diabeetus,” and I’ll never get over it. He won’t grow out of it, either.

Guiseppe has only been in his forever home for a couple of minutes, basically, but he’s already settling right in. He might look like an old man, but he’s a kitten, and as a kitten, he’s always acting crazy:

7 Heat-Safe Ways to Spoil Your Dog on National Dog Day

Below are seven fun celebratory activities recommended by Dr. Halligan for celebrating your pooch this National Dog Day.

1. Frozen lick mat or a stuffed Kong breakfast

“Spread xylitol-free peanut butter, mashed banana or a little low-sodium broth on a lick mat (or stuff a Kong), freeze overnight and serve in the morning,” Dr. Halligan recommends. “It occupies them, hydrates them and feels like a party.”

2. Indoor scent hunt or a snuffle mat game

“Hide a few of their regular kibble pieces or small training treats around a cool room and let them use their nose to find them,” Dr. Halligan says. “Sniffing and problem-solving provide wonderful mental stimulation without strenuous exercise.”

3. Plan a special adventure at the right time of day

“If your dog loves walks, celebrate during the coolest part of the day—dawn or dusk—instead of heading out in the afternoon heat,” Dr. Halligan says. “Stay in the shade when possible, and check the pavement before you go. If the pavement is too hot for your hand or bare feet, it’s too hot for their paws. Keep it short, stay on grass or dirt, and bring water.”

4. Water play

“If your dog enjoys water, a shallow kiddie pool or sprinkler in a shaded area can be a fun way to celebrate,” Dr. Halligan says. “Always supervise them, provide fresh drinking water and don’t assume that being wet means a dog can’t overheat.”

5. Cooling mat “spa” session

“Put a cooling mat or damp towel on a tile floor, turn on a fan or AC, and give your dog a gentle brushing, check their ears, look at their paws and nails, and give them plenty of attention and extra belly rubs,” Dr. Halligan recommends. “I love anything that combines bonding with a little preventive healthcare.”

6. A new puzzle or long-lasting chew

“A simple enrichment toy used in air conditioning is more festive than an hour of outdoor play in 85°F+ weather,” Dr. Halligan says. “Put part of your dog’s regular meal into a food puzzle or interactive toy, and let them work for it. Mental exercise is incredibly important for dogs, and you might be surprised by how tired they can be after using their brain.”

7. Teach them a new trick

“Spend 10 minutes in the air conditioning teaching ‘high five,’ ‘touch’ or another simple trick using positive reinforcement,” Dr. Halligan says. “Dogs love interacting with us, and learning something new exercises their brain rather than overheating their body.”

3 Summer Celebration Hazards to Avoid

We know you want to celebrate every moment of summer with your pup, but these three summer health hazards for dogs should be taken into consideration before any outdoor time. 

1. Strenuous activity during the hottest or most humid part of the day. “Dogs primarily cool themselves through panting, and heat plus humidity makes it more difficult for them to dissipate that heat,” Dr. Halligan says. “Fetch can be particularly deceptive because an excited dog may keep chasing the ball long after they should have stopped. Brachycephalic dogs such as French bulldogs, English bulldogs and pugs, as well as overweight, elderly and thick-coated dogs, require extra caution.”
2. Hot pavement and unshaded patios or parking lots. “When air temperature is 87°F, asphalt can reach 140°F+ and burn paw pads in seconds,” Dr. Halligan warns. “Celebration photos on a sunny sidewalk are not worth the injury. Move the celebration to grass or shade, or wait until the surface has cooled.”
3. The just-for-a-minute parked car. “Even with windows cracked, interior temperature can climb 40°F in an hour,” Dr. Halligan says. “On [an] 80°F day, the cabin can exceed 120°F. This remains one of the most common causes of fatal heatstroke I see.”

How to Spot the Early Signs of Canine Heatstroke

“One of the most important things dog owners can learn is what overheating looks like before their dog collapses,” Dr. Halligan says.

Early warning signs of heatstroke in dogs may include:

• Heavy or excessive panting that doesn’t settle down
• Excessive drooling
• Suddenly seeking shade or trying to stop
• Restlessness or whining
• Reluctance to continue playing or walking
• Weakness or unusual lethargy
• Changes in gum color
• Vomiting or diarrhea as the condition progresses
• Acting confused, unsteady or “not quite right”

Dr. Halligan says it’s vital to not wait until it gets worse; heatstroke can progress faster than you even realize. Luckily, if you suspect heatstroke, there are quick steps you can take.

“Stop the activity, move the dog into air conditioning or shade, begin cooling them with cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact a veterinarian immediately, as time is of the essence,” Dr. Halligan recommends. “Difficulty breathing, weakness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures or collapse should be treated as an emergency. Heatstroke can progress rapidly and cause serious organ damage. The best treatment is prevention. Celebrate your dog without asking their body to fight the heat.”

TikTok user @tropical_aviary_birds shared a video of a nest full of Gouldian finch chicks, and I genuinely thought I was looking at tiny aliens.

The little chicks sit beside their mom while stretching their necks toward the sky, jerking their heads around with stiff, robotic movements and opening impossibly wide mouths that seem to glow in the dim nest.

The comments were equally stunned.

“That’s low key scary,” one person admitted.

As strange as they look, those colorful mouths and glowing facial markings have a very important purpose.

Gouldian finches nest inside dark tree hollows where it’s difficult for parent birds to see their hungry babies. The brightly colored markings around each chick’s mouth act like tiny targets, helping mom and dad quickly find the correct place to deliver food, even in very low light.

Scientists have also found that the chicks’ unusual mouth markings reflect light, making them even easier for their parents to spot inside the nest.

A funny video showing a Chihuahua and a pit bull at the vet has pet parents laughing over the very different personalities on display. One dog seems perfectly happy to be there. The other has a very clear message: hands off.

“Dangerous” Dog Is the Easy Patient View this post on Instagram

Pit bulls have suffered from a bad reputation over the years, often associated with being dangerous and aggressive. The reality is that the breed is far from that.

In the video shared by Clínica Veterinaria Golevet in Valencia, Spain, we instead see a pit bull licking and kissing the vet while the vet is examining her. She remains remarkably calm, stays close, and allows the vet to examine her. It’s the type of vet visit that dog parents dream about. In a stressful environment like a vet office, not many dogs can handle it as well as the pit bull in the video.

Then comes the Chihuahua. The tiny dog immediately goes into defensive mode, growling and refusing to let the vet get too close.

The comment section made it even more relatable. “We have one of each and this is 100% accurate!” one follower shared.

“I don’t know man my next-door neighbor has one of those teeny teeny demon dogs. It’s like 2 1/2 pounds and I swear it would take me out if I let it,” joked another.

How to Get Your Dog Comfortable at the Vet

If your dog is nervous during a vet visit, give them space and work with your veterinarian to create a positive environment.

Start preparing at home. Get your dog accustomed to being handled by touching their paws, ears, tail and mouth, and reward them with treats when they don’t show any signs of aggression. You can also have them step on and off your household scale so they get used to being weighed.

The biggest challenge is making the dog comfortable at the clinic. Do it by scheduling happy visits. Drop by the vet office between regular appointments just to let your dog sniff and get some treats from the staff. Sit in the lobby during quiet hours to practice calm behavior and reward it.

It might also be worth bringing high-value distractions, like lick mats or favorite treats, during visits.

This video shared by @frankietazz on TikTok shows a pup named Frankie who is absolutely Samuel L. Jackson in dog form — from the facial expressions he makes to his general attitude.

I’ve seen plenty of commuters who look less comfortable on public transportation than these two birds, which is probably why this Sydney train story immediately got me.

The video shows two feathered passengers casually perched on the back of a train seat, riding along as if they’ve got somewhere to be. There’s no frantic fluttering or desperate search for an exit. They look relaxed, experienced, and frankly more confident about the route than I am on most public transit systems.

The person filming boarded at Roseville and initially assumed the birds had accidentally become trapped. A couple of other passengers were admiring them, too, but nobody quite knew whether a rescue operation was necessary.

At Chatswood, the filmer finally alerted a train guard.

Her response changed everything: These birds apparently do this all the time.

The guard explained that the little commuters regularly ride between Lindfield and Artamon, hopping aboard to hunt for dropped food before eventually making the return trip. Even wilder, she said they appear to recognize when it’s time to leave from the train announcements.

I need these birds to teach a public transportation class.

Apparently, they aren’t the only ones either. The post says other birds have been known to travel between North Sydney and Milsons Point, and one particularly famous rail-riding bird was even known around North Sydney as Archie.

The viewers in the comments naturally treated this like Sydney’s cutest commuter story. One person joked that modern birds have gotten lazy because previous generations actually had to fly places. Another suggested that if the pair are Mynas, maybe we’re watching a romantic getaway rather than a snack run, since Myna birds are monogamous.

Personally, I’m obsessed with the idea that they intentionally avoid peak hours. Less crowding, easier access to crumbs, and presumably no one checking whether they tapped on.

Honestly, that’s just good planning.

I love that an older passenger reportedly said she’d never seen anything like it despite years of riding the trains. Imagine discovering your commute had had secret feathered regulars this whole time.

As unbelievable as this sounds, birds really can learn surprisingly specific routines around people. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology notes that Common Mynas at an Australian train station have been observed boarding trains for food scraps and leaving when they hear the door-closing warning.

If you spot wildlife using public spaces this cleverly:

• Give them room. You can enjoy the moment without chasing, touching, or cornering them.
• Skip the snack. Human food can encourage wildlife to depend on commuters and may not be healthy for them.
• Alert staff if needed. If an animal looks trapped, injured, or distressed, let transit staff handle the situation safely.

I’m just saying: If these two start carrying Opal cards, Sydney officially has to count them as commuters.

Stray cats aren’t really something I see very often. In my town, there are one, maybe two outdoor cats, but they both have collars and homes. I don’t think @trevinovane956 was expecting to see so many kittens at her back door, but evidently, she didn’t mind. There were so many! It looks like there was Mama, plus 6 kittens. She seems to have a kitten in every color, with one comment saying, “Variety pack!”

The caption says that they made sure Mama and all of her kittens were fed, but that they definitely need forever homes. Luckily, now that they know this is a safe spot and a food source, they won’t go far.

For now, they took them all in. They’ll be safe while they finish growing, and then once they’re old enough, they’ll get put into forever homes with people who will handle spaying and neutering. Should You Take In Stray Kittens?

Schipperkes are a small Belgian dog breed originally developed as watchdogs and companions. Despite their compact size, they’re known for having huge personalities, endless curiosity and enough confidence to believe they can handle just about anything.
