Visiting the zoo is easily one of the best family-friendly weekend activities around. It's exciting for all ages, educational and a great opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the incredible animals that share our planet.

Of course, there's always a little extra excitement when a zoo welcomes a new resident, which is exactly what happened recently at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, where keepers made an adorable discovery that has visitors rushing to the Small Mammal House.

Smithsonian National Zoo's Newest Resident Is a Cute Little Porcupette

On the morning of May 20, keepers at the Smithsonian National Zoo's Small Mammal House were met with an exciting surprise when they spotted something clinging to a branch near resident prehensile-tailed porcupine Beatrix: an adorable newborn porcupette.

The new baby is the fourth offspring of Beatrix and her mate, Quillbur, and marks the fourth generation of prehensile-tailed porcupines born at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. The little one also joins a wholesome family tree that includes siblings Quillow (2023), Fofo (2022) and Quilliam (2019).

As for how the newborn is settling in, keepers report that the porcupette has already begun bonding with mom and appears to be healthy, strong and, most importantly, incredibly adorable. Better yet, the fuzzy little newcomer is currently on exhibit, giving visitors the chance to catch a glimpse of its earliest days firsthand. The only thing we don't know yet is whether the porcu-cutie is a boy or a girl, though keepers say that mystery should be solved within the next few weeks.

How Scientists Determine a Porcupette's Sex

While a newborn porcupette might look like a fuzzy bundle of joy, there's actually more going on beneath the surface than you might think. At birth, a porcupette's hair and quills are super flexible, but within minutes of being exposed to air, they start to dry and harden. And even though a porcupette's long, rust-colored hair might look soft, the tips are actually quite sharp and prickly. 

Beneath all that fluff, however, are small black-and-white quills with hooked barbs that provide a surprisingly effective defense mechanism. In the case of the Smithsonian's newborn porcupette, the reddish-brown hair also helps it blend into tree canopies.

Newborn porcupettes, regardless of their sex, also look nearly identical to each other until about six months of age. That said, keepers don't have to wait that long to determine the new porcupette's sex. In fact, they'll use thick, protective gloves to gently pet the porcupette, allowing quills to stick in the gloves. Those quills are then sent to the Center for Conservation Genomics, where scientists conduct DNA analysis of the gene linked to sex determination.

Fans Are Smitten

Fans were quick, of course, to fall in love with the zoo's newest arrival.

"I am now obsessed with the word porcupette," one fan wrote in response to the Smithsonian National Zoo's Facebook post. "They have the most boopable snoots," another added.

"A porcupette! A new word for me, and they're right: it looks like super soft mink fur, not barbs," a third fan chimed in. "Nature is exceedingly clever."

Others simply couldn't get over the family's naming convention. "You get right out of here with those names," one commenter wrote. "They are so cute I just cannot stand it!!"

Do Dogs Have Favorite Furry Friends?

Just like their human counterparts, dogs are highly social, pack creatures. Because of this, it's incredibly common for dogs to have "preferred playmates" or as we'd call them: best friends. Dogs typically pick their besties based on play styles, matching energies, and even shared interests like wanting to run, swim, play, or lounge together.

You can tell when your dog has zoned in on a best friend with the typical signs of excitement. More tail wags, barks, and even yipping at their friend can be a sign that they've fallen in love with another dog. It's so fun to see when a dog visibly enjoys another dog's company.

Resource guarding is a behavior where a dog becomes defensive over something they consider valuable, such as food, toys, spaces, or even people.

Dogs Displaying Resource Guarding May:

• Stiffen their bodies
• Snarl or snap
• Hover protectively
• Block access intentionally
• Show escalating tension or aggression

Animal behavior experts note that not all protective or attached behavior automatically qualifies as resource guarding.

Street dogs and puppies face countless challenges in their everyday lives. From food scarcity and environmental dangers to illness and lack of health care, these canines count on the kindness of strangers to survive.

Niall Harbison helps thousands of these fur babies through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. He recently came across a young puppy needing immediate medical intervention and sprang into action.

The Instagram post from @wearehappydoggo shared the 2-month-old puppy's story as Harbison gently picked up the precious pooch from the backseat of his car.

"A tragic accident that changed his life before it even began," the onscreen text explained. "At just 2 months, he's fighting his biggest battle."

A local resident found the puppy and did everything in his power to help him, including feeding the pup by hand. When he realized the precious pooch needed serious medical intervention, he reached out to Harbison.

The little canine experienced a physical trauma at birth, resulting in neurological damage.

"We learned that his mother accidentally lay on him, and the tragic accident left him with severe neurological struggles, completely unable to stand or walk," the caption read. "It is still very early days, and we are running tests to figure out exactly what is going on."

Harbison and His Team Are Determined

Now at the rescue's medical clinic, the puppy is receiving hands-on testing and care.

"Our wonderful vet team is doing everything in their power to give him a fighting chance," the story continued, with clips of the canine cutie in the clinic being tended to by the medical staff.

Harbison is known for his tireless devotion and commitment to the well-being of Thailand's street dogs. With the support of his Happy Doggo team, Harbison is dedicated to helping this puppy every step of the way in his healing journey.

Dachshunds are one of the most delusional dog breeds in the world, and I say that with deep affection. They are tiny, loud, hilariously overcommitted, and somehow always moving through life with the confidence of a dog who has never once looked in a mirror. They are built like rolled-up bath mats and still act like private security. So when one decides to square up to a horse from the front seat of a utility vehicle, it doesn't feel shocking. Behind her is Jade, a much bigger dog, looking less brave than confused, like she can't quite believe this tiny sausage-shaped coworker has chosen violence again. Meanwhile, the horse is just standing there, existing, minding their own horse business, probably wondering why a sentient loaf of bread is screaming at them from a vehicle.

That is what makes the whole thing so funny.

The post frames it like Jade was simply trying to exist while Dolly defended the car with every ounce of her soul, and yes, that's the exact dynamic. Jade has the energy of someone who didn't ask to be assigned this shift. Dolly has the energy of someone who would absolutely fight a thunderstorm if she felt it got too close to the property line.

And honestly, I know the type. My small dog, Lola, who is part Heeler, also likes to take on animals five times her size. She has that same tiny body, giant audacity problem where she seems to believe the laws of physics and common sense are for lesser beings.

Why Do Hens Brood on Other Birds' Eggs?

You may be wondering how something like this happens.

First of all, you need to understand what brooding is.

Brooding is a behavior exhibited by female birds of sitting on eggs to keep them warm, aka, incubation.

This is also known as "going broody," and birds can get very intense during this time.

It is almost like the birds enter a trance and will not move from that spot so they can keep the eggs warm.

If you try to gather eggs from her, she may peck you.

What's interesting is that during this time of brooding, the hen will sometimes sit on eggs laid by other hens or other birds (such as a duck) or even objects that resemble eggs, as they can't tell the difference when they're in this state.

So clearly, this mother hen came across these duck eggs and started brooding, resulting in her being an adoptive mother.

Luckily, as we see in the video, these ducks have access to a pond and grass, so they're in the perfect place.

This is the exact moment every breeder parent fears: when the babies leave home, and somebody in the house takes it REALLY hard.

TikTok user @ironmane_coons shared the heartbreaking clip of a sweet Golden Retriever lying on a rug beside a tiny stuffed kitten while softly whining and whimpering after her beloved Maine Coon kittens left for their forever homes.

In the TikTok from @franflight, Ruby was lying sadly in her kennel as a staff member gently gave her some much-needed affection.

"Ruby has found herself in a shelter at 14 years old," the onscreen text explained. "Ruby's parent went into hospice care and was unable to care for her."

The sweet cat loved being held and petted, as she tried to soak in every bit of attention. Ruby even followed the NAWS staffer around from room to room for constant companionship.

"If there's one thing we know about Ruby, it's that she hates being alone," the story shared.

Apparently, the feline fur baby has had a difficult year, with a lot of tumult and little security.

"Before her previous parent, Ruby was found abandoned outside," the text continued. "Her next home will be her third in less than a year. She's had so much instability."

Ruby Is a Love Bug

The senior cat has chronic kidney disease, impaired vision, and some minor mobility issues in her hips. Despite these ailments that come with aging, Ruby's loving spirit and gentle nature are incredibly strong.

Several clips in the video featured Ruby snuggling and cuddling with the shelter staff member, clearly content with just being held. The precious kitty loves companionship and would make a wonderful addition to a loving family.

As easy as it can be to start yelling or shouting at your dog if you get frustrated, this kind of behavior can be quite harmful to pups, especially depending on the tone that's used.

Learning how certain words may impact your dog and knowing what actions to take instead can help with both dog training and the bond with your pup. We spoke to professional dog trainers to learn more about  what words to never yell at your dog, and exactly what you should do instead.

Words You Should Never Yell at Your Dog

While experts agree that there are plenty of things you should never yell at your dog, many also concur that it’s much more about the tone of your voice. 

“Dogs don’t speak our language, and words only acquire meaning based on the way we use them,” says Shawna Baskette, owner of Reactive Dog Reset. “That said, yelling your dog’s own name angrily is a training-specific concern. Imagine how you would feel if your name were used as verbal punishment repeatedly. It’s the same for your dog.”

Besides the tone of your voice, our experts agree you should never yell the following to your dog: 

• Their Name
• “Bad dog”
• “What did you do?”
• “Get down”
• “No”
• “Quit it”
• “Stop”

Although the words themselves aren’t the cause of stress in dogs, they are the ones mostly tied to negative connotations. “'No' is one of the most overused words in a dog owner’s vocabulary and, unfortunately, one of the most misunderstood by dogs,” says Molly Jespersen, a dog training specialist for Camp Bow Wow. “The issue is not the word itself, but the fact that it provides no clear direction. Dogs do not process vague corrections the way humans do.”

Chris Edge, founder of K9Edge Dog Training, also says, “I see this all the time with overwhelmed owners. Their dog is barking, lunging, countersurfing, jumping, losing their mind at the window, and the owner starts escalating with 'No,' 'Stop,' 'Get down" or 'Quit it.' The problem being that from the dog’s perspective, the human is often just becoming louder, more tense and more emotionally unpredictable.”

For their part, Baskette adds, “A large survey of over 60,000 dog owners found that delayed verbal corrections using any words like 'bad dog' or 'what did you do?' are extremely common and completely ineffective. Dogs can’t connect a scolding 30 seconds after an incident to their prior behavior. It just creates anxiety.”

What Professional Trainers Do Instead of Yelling

Instead of yelling or shouting at your pup, professional trainers agree it’s much better to guide your dog to correct behavior. 

“They need to understand what to do, not just what not to do,” Jespersen says. “Instead of saying 'no,' try using short, specific cues like 'Off,' 'Leave it' or 'Sit.' Redirect your dog toward the desired behavior, then reward it immediately. If you need to interrupt unwanted behavior, use a neutral interrupter like 'Uh-uh' or 'Nope,' then immediately redirect them toward the behavior you want instead.”

Edge also adds that the most important part is what comes next. He says that when a dog "immediately gets redirected into something productive and familiar that has been reinforced hundreds of times" it can become a "consistent, confident, core behavior.”

And we get it: you may lose your cool from time to time. You may feel overwhelmed and stressed, and you may want to try to regain control by any means necessary. However, as Edge explains, “Yelling, repeating commands in frustration or using your dog’s name as a summons to punishment can create anxiety and poison those words. Dogs are sensitive to human scolding.”

At the end of the day, our pups are our family members and deserve to be treated with the same respect we would show our loved ones. The next time your dog does something and you feel like yelling, take a deep breath and calm down first before you do anything. With these expert tips, you now know exactly what to do.

What Causes a Janus Kitten? 

A Janus kitten happens when a single embryo experiences a genetic anomaly in utero.

Scientists explain that the "craniofacial duplication" stems from abnormal/excess Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) protein activity in the womb. Those proteins dictate how facial features are spaced out and patterned, leaving a Janus kitten with possible duplication of mouths, eyes, or noses and a dramatically wide face.

These kittens are *not* conjoined twins, as they're not the result of two embryos fusing together; they're one embryo that failed to develop symmetrically. Unfortunately, kittens born with this often don't survive due to what the condition does to the organs. For the few who do survive—like internet-famous Black Cat, Duo—they're considered so rare that it's only found in one of every several million births.

Frank and Louie hold the Guinness World Record for being the oldest two-faced Janus cat. He made it to the ripe old age of 15 before passing away in 2014. Since then, documented Janus kittens are few and far between, with one baby born in China in 2017, one kitten born in 2022 (as reported by California's ABC7 News), and one baby born in Ocala, Florida's Maricamp Animal Hospital in 2025.

You may love cats and even have one of your own. Or maybe you enjoy visiting a friend’s house and getting a friendly rub from their kitty. But you probably don’t want cats turning your backyard into their personal playground.

If you’re trying to figure out how to keep cats out of your yard, you’re not alone. From flower beds being dug up to unwanted “visits” near outdoor spaces, it’s a common frustration for homeowners—especially those with gardens or pets of their own.

There’s plenty of advice online about cat deterrents, but many people are left wondering: How can I keep cats out of my yard without hurting them? What scents actually work? And what humane methods are most effective?

Dr. Hilary Humm-Beatty, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, says these questions matter more than people realize as the goal is not just to deter cats, but to do so in a way that prevents stress , injury, and exposure to outdoor hazards such as traffic, predators, or toxic plants.

So, is it mean to keep cats out of your yard? Not when it’s done correctly. With the right humane strategies—from scent deterrents to environmental changes—you can protect your space while keeping stay cats safe that wander into it.

Why Cats Keep Coming Into Your Yard Outdoor gardens can attract cats searching for food and shelter.

Before learning how to keep cats out of your yard, it helps to understand what may be attracting them in the first place. According to Dr. Humm-Beatty, some of the most common attractants include:

• Food and water sources, such as pet food left outside or standing water in containers
• Garbage or compost bins that provide easy access to scraps
• Shelter that makes them feel safe and protected
• Bird feeders, which can attract both birds and the predators that follow them
• Bird activity itself, since cats are natural hunters
• Other animals, including pets that may draw curiosity or territorial behavior

“Cats may also be drawn to your yard because it offers soft, loose soil that’s ideal for digging and elimination,” Dr. Humm-Beatty explains.

Cats are also highly territorial and tend to follow consistent outdoor “routes.” As they travel these paths, they mark and detect scents left by other cats, reinforcing repeated visits.

“If unneutered or stray cats are already moving through a given area, that scent trail alone can encourage them to keep returning,” she adds.

Smells Cats Hate

“Some scents that cats tend to avoid include citrus, spicy odors, vinegar, citronella, certain essential oils and cleaning products, other animal scents, dirty litter boxes, and smoke,” says Dr. Hilary Humm-Beatty.

While some of these smells may also be unpleasant to humans, they can be especially powerful for cats—and may be useful when considering natural deterrent options for your yard.

“A cat’s sense of smell is thought to be about 14 times stronger than a human’s,” Dr. Humm-Beatty explains. “Humans have around 5 million scent receptors, while cats have approximately 200 million.”

Cats also have two scent-detecting systems: their nasal cavity and the vomeronasal organ, located in the roof of the mouth, which helps them process and interpret chemical signals in their environment.

Motion-Activated Sprinklers and Other Humane Deterrents Motion-activated sprinklers are a humane way to deter cats from entering yard spaces.

Besides removing plants and other attractive items from your yard, you can repel cats with motion-activated sprinklers, alarms and even plastic mats. Dr. Humm-Beatty says other humane cat deterrents include:

• Motion-activated sprinklers. While pricier than other humane cat deterrents, Dr. Humm-Beatty says that these sprinklers are effective because cats "do not like getting wet." "These sprinklers are activated by the heat or motion of an animal," she says.
  The sprinklers release a loud noise and a burst of water, scaring the cat away."
•  Motion-activated alarms. Humans can't hear the high-pitched sounds on these alarms, but cats can, and Dr. Humm-Beatty notes that it can scare them away. They're activated by heat or motion, and sometimes they can release a sound and a squirt of non-toxic repellent. 
• Digging deterrent. Plastic mats with flexible spikes, egg shells and chicken wire are among the digging deterrents that can keep cats out of gardens (and perhaps your yard if they're digging there).
• Fox urine granules or spray. Dr. Humm-Beatty reports that the scent of these products is scary to cats, who think it smells like a predator. You'll need to reapply them regularly for effectiveness.

Plants That Help Repel Cats

Many plants, including lavender, rosemary and rue, can serve as natural repellents to keep cats out of your yard—or at least away from parts of it. Dr. Humm-Beatty says that plans that help repel cats include:

• Lavender. This pretty, sweet-smelling flower can elevate the look of your garden and keep cats away, but Dr. Humm-Beatty says cats don't like the scent of lavender, so planting it can help repel stray cats from your yard.
• Rosemary. This plant can repel cats year-round because it's an evergreen.
• Citronella. Dr. Humm-Beatty warns that cats don't like the smell of this plant either.
• Geraniums. "Geraniums have both a smell that cats hate, and they have prickly leaves that cats do not like the feel of," she notes.
• Oregano. Oregano's strong scent can repel cats, though Dr. Humm-Beatty points out that the chemical compound carvacrol can cause respiratory discomfort in cats. Therefore it's not a safe way to keep cats out of your yard and you should avoid planting it.

How To Keep Cats Out of Flower Beds Plants, barriers, and natural deterrents can help protect flower beds from unwanted cats.

There are several effective ways to keep cats out of flower beds, including strategic plant choices, motion-activated devices, and simple physical deterrents. Many gardeners find that a combination of methods works best.

“Plants like lavender, along with motion-activated sprinklers or alarms and digging deterrents such as eggshells, can all help discourage cats,” says Dr. Hilary Humm-Beatty.

Light reflection can also be an effective deterrent. "Random light reflections can startle cats away from your garden," Dr. Humm-Beatty notes.

However, if you're wondering: What is the best homemade cat repellent? Dr. Humm-Beatty recommends stringing together some old CDs and hanging them in your garden—the light may be just what it takes to keep your cat away from your flowers and homegrown produce. As a result, you may keep the cat out of your yard.

Gardeners typically use these methods to prevent cats from using flower beds as litter areas or damaging plants while digging.

Do Coffee Grounds Keep Cats Away?

Dr. Humm-Beatty says the strong, bitter scent of coffee grounds and beans that give you a morning jolt can repel cats from your garden and yard.

"Some gardeners grow coffee plants, and other gardeners scatter coffee grounds throughout their garden to repel cats," Dr. Humm-Beatty notes. "Coffee grounds also act as a fertilizer."

However, caution is important when using this method as coffee contains caffeine, which is toxic to cats if ingested. Because of this, if you're looking for a safe way to keep cats away without hurting them, don't go with this method.

What Not To Do To Keep Cats Away Humane methods are important when trying to keep cats out of your yard.

Dr. Humm-Beatty understands that free-roaming cats can be a nuisance, but many municipalities protect them from cruelty. "It's important to choose safe, humane ways of deterring them," Dr. Humm-Beatty says.

While free-roaming cats can be a nuisance in gardens and yards, it’s important to avoid methods that may cause harm or unnecessary stress. In many areas, cats are also protected under local animal welfare laws, making humane deterrence the safest and most responsible approach.

As a result, Dr. Humm-Beatty says it's important not to:

• Have poison chemicals in your garden as they can harm cats, other wildlife and children.
• Use harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia or mothballs. Why? The scent of the chemicals may repel cats, but Dr. Humm-Beatty warns they can cause "respiratory harm to the cats and hurt other wildlife or children" who enter your yard.
• Spray anything—including water—directly at a cat. "This is traumatic for cats," she states.
• Use dangerous traps to keep cats out of your garden. Dr. Humm-Beatty advises using humane traps to catch feral or stray cats to avoid injury to the cats or wildlife.
• Use irritants that cause pain. Examples include cayenne pepper and chili flakes, which Dr. Humm-Beatty says can cause skin, eye or mucous membrane irritation.

When Outdoor Cats Become a Bigger Problem

Sometimes, plants and motion-activated sprinklers aren’t enough to keep outdoor cats out of your yard. When that happens, it helps to understand what kind of situation you’re dealing with.

Dr. Humm-Beatty says the first step is identifying whether you’re seeing a small number of individual cats or a larger, established group.

"Stray cats might be cats that actually have owners in the neighborhood or may be cats that have been lost from their owners and are unhoused," Dr. Humm-Beatty notes. "Community or feral cats are cats that are part of a wild cat group that is roaming a predictable territory."

If the cat stopping by to smell your flowers has a collar or you know they belong to a neighbor, your best bet is to contact the owner to discuss the issue. If that doesn't work, Dr. Humm-Beatty says you should consider calling animal control.

When dealing with a larger group of cats, Dr. Humm-Beatty notes that long-term solutions require more than simply removing animals from a yard. Without addressing the underlying territory, new cats may eventually move in—a pattern sometimes referred to as the “vacuum effect.”

“If you are dealing with a large group of cats, simply removing cats from your yard—or the nearby territory—is not a long-term solution,” she says.

In these situations, it may help to identify whether a local group or community is already providing food or care. If so, connecting with local Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs through animal shelters or humane societies can be a more sustainable approach.

A sweet guardian angel is giving social media fans “hope for humanity,” all because of a simple act of kindness shared to TikTok.

“You give me hope for humanity, and right now that’s huge,” shared one viewer in the rescue video’s comment section. “I’m so grateful for good humans like you.”

Kind words like these poured in after one content creator took time out of her day to rescue a young Cardinal — though some commenters believe it may actually be an adult bird — lying on the sidewalk covered in ants.

Knowing the distressed bird could be harmed or killed by another animal, the woman parked her car and carefully attempted to rescue it. Explaining that she planned to take the bird to a rescue center the next day, the woman wrapped the Cardinal in a towel, helped it into an enclosure in the back of her car and drove the bird to safety.

If you do come across a bird in distress, first check the surrounding area to see if there is a fallen nest nearby. If the bird is a baby and the nest is close by, simply place the baby back into the nest. If the baby bird is away from the nest, experts suggest leaving it where it is or gently moving it into the shade, knowing the bird’s parents will likely return.

Find a licensed rehabilitator if you come across a bird who truly does need help.

While the woman in the video above could immediately tell the ant-covered Cardinal was unwell, there are several clear signs that indicate when a bird may need help.

A bird’s behavior often changes when it isn’t feeling well. Look for excessive plucking, preening or chewing on its own feathers or skin. Domesticated birds may become unusually clingy, sometimes referred to as “shadow bird” behavior, while a bird’s chirps or vocalizations may begin to sound noticeably different.

Birds can also experience depression, sometimes becoming unusually quiet or silent when they would normally be vocal.

Social media commenters were effusive in their gratitude that the woman in the video recognized the signs that this Cardinal was not okay.

Golden Retrievers are known for loving the water thanks to their strong swimming instincts, webbed paws and water-resistant double coats. Many Goldens enjoy everything about being on a boat, from the ocean breeze and sunshine to the sounds and movement of the water.

Of course, Golden Retrievers’ love of swimming can also make them eager to leap off the side of the boat for an unexpected dip, potentially putting themselves in danger. Experts often recommend outfitting dogs with life vests before heading out on the water to help keep them safe.

Using a leash when appropriate is also encouraged for extra security.
