Some animals are rescued or brought to the shelter as tiny fur babies. Puppies and kittens are usually the first pets to be adopted, yet sometimes a few can get overlooked and end up in a cage for too long.

In the TikTok from @beaconofhoperescue, Auburn was inside her kennel but verbally expressing her distress.

"Auburn cries to get out of her cage," the onscreen text shared. "She's been with us 2+ years since she was a kitten."

The pretty kitty is always the last fur baby to be put back in her cage because staff members are heartbroken by her cries. Auburn is a very affectionate and loving cat who would make a wonderful addition to any family.

"She's a complete love bug and just wants pets and belly rubs all the time," the story continued as Auburn leaned in to receive gentle pets and jumped around a cat tree. The caption added, "We don’t understand how nobody wants her... she will love you endlessly!"

The feline fur baby has a scar near her eye from an injury from kittenhood, which may be a deterrent for potential pet parents.

"Her brother scratched her eye when they were little," the text explained. "We think that's why she hasn't been given a chance."

How Is Auburn Now?

The rescue's Instagram post announced the wonderful news that Auburn was adopted.

"The power of social media changed a life," the caption announced, along with images of Auburn being held by her new mom. "Her forever mom found her through our Facebook, and now Auburn gets the happy ending we have dreamed about for so long."

Beacon of Hope praised their social media followers for spreading the word on this special kitty, and posted plenty of well wishes for Auburn.

However, in multi-person households, Siamese cats may choose favorites. “They tend to bond closely to one person and are intensely loyal,” Placer says.

This sweet breed doesn’t just want to share your space, they want to be part of whatever you’re doing. Sit down, and they’ll likely be in your lap. Move to another room, and they’ll tail along behind. “They don’t just want to be in the same room,” Wooten adds. “They want contact.”

Placer says this affectionate behavior has roots in the breed’s origins. “Due to their origins in a tropical climate, they tend to seek out warmth by curling up on laps and under blankets,” she explains. It’s no surprise they are considered one of the top devoted cat breeds for pet lovers.

Because they lack fur, Sphynx cats are naturally drawn to warmth. “They actively seek body heat leading to an abundance of cuddling, climbing onto shoulders and sleeping under the covers,” Placer says. “They are intelligent and curious and enjoy active playtime.”

“They often 'check in' throughout the day with soft chirps, gentle head bumps and by simply being near,” Placer says. This balanced approach to affection makes them a great choice for people who want companionship without clinginess.

Although we don’t deny we’ve also fallen victim to wanting to sleep in for an extra hour or two, it’s not always a good idea for dogs to stay sedentary and skip on exercise. Just like humans, our furry friends require exercise to help them stay healthy and live longer. 

The amount of exercise your dog needs will depend on their breed. Some breeds, like golden retrievers, may need much more daily exercise to stay mentally and physically stimulated, while others, like bulldogs, likely need much less. However, no matter what breed your pup is, they must get their daily recommended exercise time.

Without exercise, our dogs will not only become lethargic, but they may also become more prone to various illnesses and injuries. While our pups can’t tell us when they’re starting to fall into this downward cycle, there are plenty of signs that you can look out for that will let you know it’s time to increase your pup’s exercise time.

Signs Your Dog Needs More Exercise

While there are plenty of ways you can tell your dog needs more exercise, there are typically two types of signs to look out for. 

“Dogs that lack stimulation will typically create their own ways to burn off excess energy," says Iryna Smyrnova, a zoologist and veterinarian at MeoWoff. She says some common examples include:

• Chewing furniture
• Nonstop barking
• Running back and forth (pacing)
• Digging
• Seeking constant attention

In addition, Smyrnova says there are some less obvious signs your dog needs more exercise that may go unnoticed, including:

• Weight gain
• Irregular sleep habits
• Inability to settle down

“Those signs could mean your pet is not getting the required amount of physical or mentally stimulating activities each day," she says.

Why 15 Minutes of Sniffing Equals a 1-Hour Walk

For dogs that might struggle with extra physical activity or more arduous games, there is another solution that can help increase their exercise.

“Providing your pet the ability to stop and smell during a walk provides a strong cognitive function because most dogs use scent to identify their surroundings," Smyrnova says. "Sometimes a 'sniff-walk' at a slower pace can give the same level of satisfaction as a longer, faster-paced walk, depending upon your pet's needs. This is true for senior dogs, anxious dogs and any breed of dog that has a high sense of smell.” 

A good ‘sniff-walk’ is the perfect way to get your dog moving and engaged, even if you're going at a slower speed. They'll get the benefits of both exercise and mental stimulation just like they would on a longer walk, while still moving at a manageable pace.

How to Safely Increase Your Dog’s Activity Level (The 10% Rule)

While you may want to jumpstart your dog’s activity level ASAP, it’s not wise to go full steam ahead right away. Instead, try the 10 percent rule, which Smyrnova says helps you “significantly decrease your risk of causing injury to your pet by limiting the extreme variation in speed of a single exercise session." Some potential risks may include joint strain, muscle injuries, irritated paw pads and overheating.

“Many owners don't realize how well they know their pet until something goes wrong with one of these types of exercises," Smyrnova says. "Pay attention to your pet's recovery time from an exercise session. If your pet shows signs of stiffness, limping, exhaustion or reluctance to get up the next morning, this could signal that the intensity was too much for your pet.”

To help keep these risks at bay, try slowly increasing your dog's exercise by 10 percent, which may look like adding a bit more distance to a long walk, adding a 'sniff-walk' to their routine or adding an additional short walk to their day.

“Unlike walking, exercising with your pet should always be based on what works best for that specific pet,” Smyrnova says. “Each pet has unique characteristics that determine what type of exercise is right for them. Examples include their breed, age, body condition, medical history and personality."

She says a young working breed dog may love going on hikes and playing advanced training games, but a brachycephalic breed or older dog would likely benefit from short, low-impact periods of exercise that's broken down into smaller segments of time throughout the day.

Regardless of what type of exercise is right for your pup, the important part is making sure their mind and body stay active every day. Enough exercise can help your dog stay healthy and help them feel their best for years to come.

A musically gifted Labrador is proving dogs really can do it all.

A Labrador named Jack is combining his expert watchdog skills with his clear gift for music in a viral social media video liked by more than 160,000 people.

In the video, Jack can be seen sitting by the window, a spot his dad calls his favorite hangout. While Jack gazes outside, daydreaming of greeting mail carriers or chasing butterflies, he rhythmically taps his tail on a drum sitting nearby.

Jack's skills on the drums showcase dogs' preferences for different types of music. While experts have discovered that dogs have musical preferences, Jack clearly prefers the music he can make with his own tail.

Charmed commenters prefer Jack's tunes, too.

Jack may be able to keep the beat for his window-watching jam session, but dogs don't actually possess beat synchronization, the ability to bob your head or tap your feet to a beat.

That skill is actually rare in the animal kingdom. Animals that can keep a beat include dolphins, cockatoos, and some sea lions.

Dogs can hear patterns and tones, but the unexpected and chaotic beats of music combined with high frequencies can cause them anxiety and stress. While dogs can't keep a beat, studies show they do prefer reggae, soft rock, and classical music.

Ducklings are supposed to follow their moms.

That's the whole deal. Tiny feet, tiny peeps, tiny little parade line behind one much more competent adult. So when a lone Wood Duck duckling starts following a human family home instead, the whole thing immediately feels a little wrong, a little fragile, and a lot emotional.

It starts with that heartbreaking little setup: a tiny Wood Duck duckling, alone, somehow ending up behind a family instead of where the duck belongs. The video caption says as much in spirit: This baby basically trailed them home, which is not the kind of thing that happens if the world is going exactly according to plan. And once you know that, every second of the clip feels heavier. Not dramatic in a forced way. Just quietly urgent.

The post fills in the rest of the story. This family didn't just shrug and keep walking. They noticed. They understood that this baby needed help. And that's where the whole thing shifts from sad to beautiful. The duckling was taken to wildlife rehab, where the baby can be cared for until strong enough to make it back to the wild, where the little duck belongs.

That matters.

A lot.

Because one of the most moving things about rescue stories isn't just that someone stepped in, it is how they stepped in. Nobody here tried to turn the duckling into a pet or make the moment about themselves. They saw a vulnerable little life in the wrong place, did the right thing, and let the professionals take it from there. One person in the comments basically said the universe must have known exactly who to send that baby to, and honestly, it's hard not to feel that way.

The duckling is so small that the whole thing almost doesn't seem real. Wood Ducks already look a little too pretty to exist, even as adults. As babies, they somehow look even more impossible. Tiny body, giant eyes, little feet trying to keep up with a world that's clearly much too big.

That's why this clip lands.

It's vulnerable.

You can feel how easily this story could have gone another way, and that's exactly what makes the kindness in it feel so powerful. A family noticed. A baby bird got help. The ending didn't become, “And now he lives in our bathtub forever.” It became something better: safe, temporary care, and then hopefully back to the life he was meant for.

That's the good stuff.

Not possession. Protection.

Not: “Look what we found.” More like: “Look what we refused to ignore.”

And in a week full of noise, cruelty, and people proving they absolutely should not be in charge of anything, one tiny duckling trailing the right family home feels weirdly holy.

Who To Call If You Find an Abandoned Duckling

If a lone duckling ends up separated from their mother, the best move is not to raise it yourself but to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as quickly as possible. Audubon notes that if a duckling is trapped or truly separated from their family, people should either reunite the duckling safely with their mother if possible or contact a rehabilitator for help, because baby birds need specialized care.

What's so special about this video is that despite the rabbit's and dolphin's vastly different sizes and species, each is curious about the other and cautiously checks the other out. Neither is aggressive nor timid, and they connect through the simple gesture of what looks like a handshake.

Commenters were completely charmed by the animal interaction.

“This is prob the 1st time in History a Dolphin met a Bunny,” one speculated.

“They’re communicating,” added another.

One more shared, “awww they look so happy to meet.”

Can Dogs Recognize Siblings After Years Apart?

Though Ranger clearly had familiarity with this dog, was he aware that it was his actual sister and that they shared the same parents?

Research on this subject is somewhat limited, but a few studies have found that dogs can recognize their parents or at least have a familial sense of them, but it depends on the amount of time they were separated.

The most conclusive study was published in the journal Animal Behaviour and cited by ScienceInsights.com, and found that mother dogs separated from their puppies as early as 8 to 12 weeks of age could still identify their offspring two years later.

The Animal Behaviour study, which was conducted by Peter Hepper at Queen’s University Belfast, also found that at 4 to 5.5 weeks of age, puppies showed recognition of their siblings as well as their mother, and it was all scent-based.

However, there's no conclusive evidence that dog siblings could recognize each other after a prolonged absence.

However, it does seem like Ranger knows this other Golden Retriever a bit more than a stranger he just met off the street, so maybe very deep down, in his own dog way, he knows this is a special connection.

The reason for this is simple: dogs and cats have far more sensitive hearing than us humans do, which means sounds that we may not even notice may cause them distress or discomfort. Certain noises may make your dog or cat feel anxious, on edge or even afraid.

But beyond an evil malfunctioning smoke detector, are there other sounds that can make your pet feel unsafe? And how can you help your pet feel safer in the presence of these noises? Is there a way to create a "safe zone" for your pet in the event a sound they don't like happens to occur?

To get more information on these topics, we spoke with a veterinarian about common household noises that may make your pet feel unsafe, how to make them feel more at ease and more. Here's what we learned.

Household Noises That Make Pets Feel Unsafe

"We often think of loud, infrequent noises (fireworks, gunshots, thunderstorms) as being the most stressful sounds a dog or cat can experience, but animals have much more sensitive hearing than people, and a lot of normal household sounds that may not bother their human companions can provide frequent lower-grade stressors in a pet’s life," Dr. Weeth says.

Common household sounds that may cause distress in your pet include the following:

• Microwave ovens (running and beeping)
• Vacuum cleaners (regular or automatic/robotic)
• Smoke detector chirping
• Smoke alarms going off
• Unfamiliar car sounds
• Ultrasonic small animal deterrents
• Lawnmowers

While there's no way to prevent pets from experiencing these upsetting sounds, there are ways to help them become more comfortable when they do happen.

"These sounds are often at a higher frequency than human ears can detect, and can be part of everyday life in many households, so there isn’t really a way to prevent pets from reacting or to completely avoid them," Dr. Weeth says. "Gradually exposing them to these sounds ideally starting at a young age (desensitization) and providing positive associations (counterconditioning) or rewards can help mitigate their stress response."

How to Create a Soundproof "Safe Zone" for Your Pet

"There really isn’t a way to make a 'safe zone,' as many of these sounds are part of normal everyday life, so gradual desensitization and creating positive associations is key to helping pets deal with life in a typical home," Dr. Weeth says.

However, in the event of an infrequent sound exposure, Weeth says you can create a safe haven for your pet.

"For the really loud, infrequent sound exposures (like fireworks or thunderstorms), create a safe place in your home, ideally with no external windows or doors for better sound dampening, and talk with your veterinarian about medical management of short-term anxiety if needed," Dr. Weeth says.

Even though we can't stop common household noises or celebratory fireworks from happening, with these tips we can at least make our homes feel safer for our furry friends and help reduce their stress around these sounds.

Why Dogs Get So Excited by Other People

Dogs get so excited by new people for a plethora of reasons. For starters, dogs are highly social and bond differently with individual people. When it comes to new faces or faces they don't necessarily see every day, part of what excites a dog is the novelty of the "new" person. Similar to a new toy or treat, the new person is a break in routine which is very fun for a lot of dogs.

Additionally, if the person (like...say a grandma) is constantly showering the dog in praise, love, and treats, the dog will associate them with that behavior. Dogs are also big energy mirrors, so they mimic and replicate what they see from humans. On top of all of this, dogs are also pack creatures, so getting to be around the perceived "most fun" member of the pack is always going to be a win win to your dog.

There's not much better than learning you're a dog's favorite person. May we all be so lucky as to have a Duke who will literally jump for joy at hearing our "name" in our lives!

It's one of the best little role reversals you could ask for. The Mini Schnauzer, normally so confident in the art of relentless barking, actually seems shocked by the outburst. This lovable Great Pyreneesdid his best to protect a baby chick...even if it didn't really need his help.

Earthella, a homesteader and farmer, took to social media to share how her livestock dog, a Pyrenees named River, did his best to rescue a baby chick he thought was in distress. "Thought" being the operative word given that the chick was actually totally fine, not in need of River's assistance, and definitely didn't need the full body bath it was subjected to.

As shown in the video shared to social media, River gently picked up the chick entirely in his mouth going full "helicopter parent." The hen was the ACTUAL mom was less than impressed with River's attempt at "helping." While the baby chick was fully soaked from its wet ride in River's loving embrace, it was otherwise completely unharmed and wet back to where it was supposed to be once a human intervened.

Why Great Pyrenees Are the Ultimate Protectors

Great Pyrenees have been bred for centuries to be Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) able to watch over farm animals and flocks independently from humans. Because of this intentional breeding they are very loyal, are able to make decisions without people, and are relatively fearless especially when in the presence of something they deem a threat. This independence can make them somewhat difficult to train, and they really need work to be satisfied and happy dogs.

Despite their massive size and somewhat domineering look, a Great Pyrenees really is a gentle giant—so long as you're not a threat to their flock. They're famously very affectionate and gentle, especially with little ones. All to say, River the Great Pyrenees had essentially a completely predictable reaction and method behind his madness when it came to protecting the baby chicken.

How Cross-Species Friendships Form Between Animals

Interspecies friendships (bonds where animals aren't the same species) don't often occur in the wild, but can happen with domesticated animals or other creatures in captivity. Whether through imprinting or simply spending lots of time together, friendships and closeness can happen between different species. Through familiarity and wanting companionship, animals can become friends and it's really remarkable to witness. Aside from domestic pets like Riley, some famous cross-animal bonds include cheetahs and dogs, and a trio of a bear, lion, and tiger who were rescued and lived together at Georgia's Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary.

The Buffalo Zoo Welcomes a Baby Black Howler Monkey

Born into the world on April 20, 2026, to first-time mom Rio and first-time dad Tater, the infant has not yet been named or had its gender confirmed, though it is reportedly doing incredibly well in its first weeks of life. And while the little one awaits further testing to determine its gender, fans are already gushing over the heartwarming display of family bonding, with the infant closely attached to mom since day one.

“Black howler monkey mothers are known to provide incredibly attentive care for their infants, and Rio has been no different,” the Buffalo Zoo shared in a Facebook post about the new arrival. “Zoo staff have observed the baby constantly with mom, and Rio has done an excellent job caring for and feeding her infant.”

For those planning a visit, the baby will be on exhibit daily with Rio and Tater until around noon in M&T Bank Rainforest Falls for the near future. For any pet parent, crate training is an important step when bringing any furry friend into the home. For dogs, crates aren’t just a place where they’re put from time to time; crates are an escape they can call their own. Some dogs will retreat to their crates when they’re anxious or they simply want to be alone and decompress. It isn’t uncommon to find their crates full of their favorite blankets and toys that they can use to relax and put themselves at ease. A crate can be a place they can call their own, and it can be a special safe place for dogs to retreat to when they need some R&R. 

With that being said, a crate isn’t a great setting for dogs if they’re uncomfortable and cramped. Unfortunately, this may be a problem that large and giant dog breeds may face. Large dogs like Great Danes often struggle in standard-sized crates simply because they don’t fit well in them. Just as no human would like to be cramped into a small box with no room to stretch out, large and giant dog breeds also don’t want to feel cramped in what should be a comfortable retreat to them.

Many crates come in a standard size, but the crates for large and giant dog breeds need to be specifically made with them in mind. With the help of two experts we spoke with, we found out what these adorable gentle giants truly need from a crate that they would love to use as their safe space.

Why Retail XL Crates Are Unsafe for Giant Breeds

While they are sold as the solution, retail XL crates can be unsafe for giant breeds. According to Jme Thomas, executive director of Motley Zoo Animal Rescue, “It's not that you cannot use a typical store crate for a large dog, but the key is whether the dog is calm in the crate. Some dogs bounce and wriggle around and can collapse the pop-up metal wire ones.”

Despite being a larger size, these standard retail crates aren’t equipped to handle the many movements of a dog, especially those of a large or giant breed. 

"Standard retail crates tend to bend and warp more easily with larger dogs, such as Great Danes, especially when the dog leans heavily against the sides,” says Elam Miller, the owner of The Dog Kennel Collection. “In transport, standard retail crates are prone to collapse during sudden movement.”

What Professionals Use Instead 

Instead of using retail XL crates, here's what Thomas and Miller recommend using for your large or giant breed dog.

Hard-Sided Crates

“The kinds of crates that should be used for large dogs that are either busy or struggling to crate (which may need intervention if it is separation anxiety, etc., and crating may not be possible) are ones like the Impact brand or something like this,” Thomas says. “There are other brands, but basically these are hard-sided, do not flex and cannot collapse on a dog.”

Covered Dog Run

A large dog run can be the perfect solution for pet parents with access to a large space where their dog can move around safely. "A covered dog run could also work for a large dog instead (and may cost less than an Impact crate)," Thomas says.

She adds that when using a dog run, you have to consider whether it's able to be secured to the ground, as well as take into account if your dog digs. For example, she says a covered dog run on concrete could easily shift and crash around, whereas on grass it'd be harder for it to move around.

When it comes to the ultimate structure, Miller says, “For Great Danes, heavy-duty dog kennels built with heavier-gauge steel framing and commercial-grade hardware are the best option for durability and stability.”

Although having the proper crate is vital for ensuring your dog’s safety, it isn’t always enough. If you’re transporting your pup, it may be necessary to include ratchet straps to ensure the crate doesn’t move during its journey. 

“A heavier-gauge steel dog kennel is extremely durable on its own, but if it is not properly secured, momentum during braking or turning during transport can still cause it to shift and break,” Miller says. “With a 2,000 lb-rated ratchet strap, the crate will be well secured during transport.”

Even though our gentle giants may require pricier or less common equipment to keep them safe and happy, it’s a worthy investment when it comes to their comfort, security and well-being.
