Why Vets Beg You to Get Covered

Vets encourage pet parents to get pet insurance to protect against unexpected health costs and keep their fur children as healthy as possible. “Veterinary emergencies and serious illnesses can become expensive very quickly,” Dr. Myers says. “Pet insurance can provide a valuable financial safety net, and there are certainly situations where having a good policy can make a difference in a pet parent’s ability to pursue recommended care.”

5 Critical Fine-Print Questions to Ask the Insurance Company

Below are five questions Dr. Myers recommends asking pet insurance companies before enrolling.

1. “What is covered? What isn’t covered?”

Understanding exactly what is covered and what is excluded from a pet insurance plan is essential.

“Ask specifically about pre-existing conditions, hereditary and congenital conditions, breed-related conditions, dental disease, behavioral care, prescription medications, rehabilitation and complementary therapies,” Dr. Myers says. “Also, find out whether the plan covers routine and preventive care, such as wellness exams, vaccines, deworming, heartworm testing, and flea, tick and heartworm prevention. Some policies offer wellness or preventive coverage, while others are primarily designed for unexpected accidents and illnesses.”

2. “How do you define a pre-existing condition?”

“This is particularly important because a condition may potentially be considered pre-existing based on earlier signs or symptoms, not simply the date when a veterinarian finally gave it a name,” Dr. Myers explains.

3. “What are the waiting periods, and when does coverage actually begin?”

“Ask whether different waiting periods apply to illnesses, orthopedic conditions or other categories of claims,” Dr. Myers says.

4. “How does payment and reimbursement actually work?”

“This is also a particularly important difference between pet insurance and the human health insurance most people are accustomed to,” Dr. Myers says. “Most pet insurance works on a reimbursement model. In other words, you generally pay the veterinary hospital yourself at the time your pet receives care, submit the claim afterward and then the insurance company reimburses you for whatever portion of that expense is covered by your policy.”

5. “Can the terms or cost of my coverage change as my pet ages or after claims are made?”

“Ask about premium increases, renewal terms, coverage limits and anything else that could change over the life of the pet,” Dr. Myers says.

The Essential Question to Ask Your Vet

One of the most critical questions you need to ask your vet is about your pet breed’s specific health risks. “After more than 30 years as a veterinarian, I’ve seen firsthand just how common certain problems can be in particular breeds, and I also have a good sense of how expensive they can be to diagnose and treat. That perspective can be really valuable when you’re shopping for insurance,” Dr. Myers says. “If your dog’s breed is prone to orthopedic disease, heart disease, eye problems or other potentially costly conditions, look especially closely at how a policy handles those risks. A less expensive policy isn’t necessarily a good value if it excludes the problems your pet is most likely to develop.”

Why Buying Insurance After a Diagnosis Isn’t Advised

Purchasing a pet insurance plan prior to illness is recommended versus enrolling in one after a medical problem arises. “I would be cautious about saying it ‘never’ works because policies and definitions vary, but in general, pet insurance works best when it is purchased before a pet develops a medical problem,” Dr. Myers says. “Most pet insurance policies exclude pre-existing conditions, and an official diagnosis isn’t necessarily what determines when a condition began. Depending on the policy, symptoms or clinical signs documented before coverage began, or during a waiting period, may be enough for a later condition to be considered pre-existing.”

Pet Insurance vs. a Dedicated Savings Account: Which Makes More Financial Sense?

Finally, understanding the difference between pet insurance and a dedicated savings account is key for making the best financial decision possible.

“They protect against financial risk in fundamentally different ways,” Dr. Myers explains. “With a savings account, the money remains yours and can be used for anything your pet needs. There are no exclusions, denied claims, deductibles or reimbursement percentages. The limitation is that you can only spend what you’ve managed to save. That’s where insurance can have an enormous advantage. If you put $100 a month into savings and your young dog needs an $8,000 emergency surgery six months from now, you have $600. A good insurance policy may provide access to substantially more financial protection after the applicable deductible and coinsurance.”

Dr. Myers goes on to explain that what works best will vary on your specific pet and your unique financial situation.

“On the other hand, a pet who remains relatively healthy for many years may never generate enough covered expenses to equal all of the premiums a pet parent has paid. Insurance is about paying someone else to assume some of the risk of a potentially large, unpredictable expense,” Dr. Myers says. “For some families, the best strategy may even involve both insurance for potentially catastrophic expenses and savings for deductibles, uncovered care and routine expenses.”

From a Pet Dog to a Service Dog

Initially thought of as a pet, Shadow was adopted by Panek’s family when he was only eight weeks old; however, they quickly noticed his energy and instinctiveness. He followed people around the house like a shadow, played ball and developed a particular love of water after Panek gave him his first bath.

The moment that changed how the family viewed Shadow came at a grocery store. Panek and his wife had him in harness when the puppy found the doughnut aisle. Shadow would pull on the harness in a way that he tried to communicate that he found something Panek couldn’t see. From that moment, Panek started wondering whether his family dog might have the instinct and knowledge to become a guide dog.

Panek’s wife, Melissa, raised Shadow while he ran Lighthouse Guild, one of the country’s leading vision and healthcare organizations for the blind and visually impaired. From the beginning, he had the qualities of a good service dog: physically and instinctively quick, never aloof or anxious, and always a step away.

“My entire family could see it,” Panek tells ParadePets. “Those qualities matter enormously in a working dog, and they are not things that can be trained into an animal that does not already have them.”

Rejecting the Traditional Model

Most guide dogs follow a traditional route, spending their early months with a puppy raiser before they go through formal training at a guide dog school. Thomas chose a different route.

Panek wasn’t a newcomer to training guide dogs. He spent a decade leading a guide dog school.

“I’ve had guide dogs who did everything right on a calm campus or familiar route and then really struggled once we hit the noise and unpredictability of the city,” he says. “It’s a lot like someone who learns to drive in a small town and then tries to merge onto the freeway.”

Panek took Shadow from Westchester County in New York’s Hudson Valley into Manhattan and exposed him to the environment where the dog would eventually work: Grand Central Station, escalators, busy crossings, construction sites, rush-hour crowds, trains, planes, and everything in between.

Shadow started working in the busy environment from the start. “He’s not just learning how to guide me. He’s learning how to guide me everywhere,” Panek says.

The city teaches something that a campus cannot. A sidewalk that was clear yesterday can be blocked tomorrow.

Guide dogs trained in predictable environments might struggle with the unpredictability of a busy city. Shadow has never known anything other than the real thing.

That constant movement means a guide dog cannot memorize a route and repeat it. That dog has to respond to what is happening.

Technology Helps, But Shadow Does Something Different

Panek has spent years working in technology, previously at Google on Project Guideline, an AI navigation system for blind runners. He has also collaborated with Meta on technology for people who are blind or have low vision.

Panek says Shadow does something AI and technology cannot. “Technology can give me information about what’s around me. Shadow does something technology can’t quite replicate. He can recognize an obstacle, make a decision, and respond to something unexpected in real time,” he says.

Panek’s hand on Shadow’s harness transmits information instantly, while AI processing through a camera takes longer. When walking through Manhattan’s crowded streets, those split-second decisions make a difference.

And there is another benefit. “I met my wife because of my guide dog. If I had Meta glasses on, she might have run the other way,” Panek says jokingly.

He has two requests for sighted people who pass him and Shadow on the street. First, do not hesitate to offer help to someone who cannot see. Ignoring a person entirely is the worst response, and most people hesitate because they’re not paying attention. Second, if you are able, consider volunteering to raise a guide dog puppy. Shadow started as a family pet and then became someone who changes a life every single day.

“The world is built for people who can see,” Panek says matter-of-factly. “When that’s not how you take in the world, getting around takes more work. That’s just true, not a complaint.”

Sometimes it’s hard to tell kitten siblings apart. Fur babies from the same litter can look exactly alike, making it almost impossible to differentiate one from the other. Then there are litters that produce kittens who seem like they couldn’t possibly be related.

In the TikTok from @wildmane_mainecoons, a young woman held up the mama Maine Coon with a lush gray-and-black striped coat. The dark lines decorating her large body were clear and defined against her luxurious silvery fur. Apparently, not all of her children inherited these vivid colors.

“When mom’s printer runs out of ink,” the on-screen text explained.

The young woman held up the mom cat’s first kitten, who was noticeably missing any stripes. Her fur was a gorgeous, rich gray color, but no other hues could be seen.

“Baby Number 2” was equally adorable, yet the pretty kitty’s fur color was much lighter, almost like her mom’s deep slate tint was beginning to fade with each arriving kitten.

The third kitten boasted a thick, fluffy coat that appeared almost white with just the slightest hint of gray accents, especially toward the fur baby’s bottom half.

Apparently, this color phenomenon has happened before. A previous post showed the same “ink running out” effect on a litter of orange kittens, which had followers leaving some comical comments:

• “It was like raw, cooked, over cooked,” another pointed out.

The Cats from NYC Streets Need Immediate Help

Puppy Kitty rescues around 900 cats annually. According to executive director Meagan Licari, 40 percent of them require some emergency or urgent medical intervention. They face issues like upper respiratory infection, severe eye infection, traumatic injury, severe dental disease, dehydration, malnutrition or pregnancy complications.

“For many of these cats, immediate access to diagnostics, hospitalization, surgery, medication, or specialty care can quite literally mean the difference between continued suffering on the streets and a chance to recover, heal, and ultimately find a loving home,” Licari tells ParadePets.

Emergency Treatment Cost Thousands

PKNYC says its average rescue costs about $600 per cat, but emergency cases can be dramatically more expensive. Licari explains that fracture repairs, amputations, hospitalization, blood transfusions and specialist consultations can push the price to as much as $6,000.

This is why the organization created its emergency cat care fund, helping cover urgent surgeries, emergency hospital stays, diagnostics and specialized treatment.

Neo is just one example. Jackie is another. She arrived at the shelter with a broken pelvis and was placed on the at-risk list and faced euthanasia. PKNYC pulled her, used emergency funding to get her surgery and was later adopted by a loving family.

The kitten distribution system has apparently expanded its hiring department.

It no longer works exclusively through cats.

Now it’s assigning tiny Dachshunds who take one look at a foster kitten and decide, “Congratulations. I’m your mother now.”

That’s exactly what happened with Maverick, an adorable little wiener dog who quite literally carried a foster kitten away like he’d just won full custody.

You Keep a Consistent Schedule

Sure, you can’t do everything at the exact same time every day. But some sense of consistency in your routine goes a long way with your dog. “Dogs feel more secure when they have a general idea of what comes next,” says Molly Jespersen, Camp Bow Wow‘s training specialist. “Keeping meals, walks, potty breaks and bedtime fairly consistent can make daily life feel safe and predictable.” A routine also helps you notice when something is off, like if your dog suddenly skips breakfast or needs to go outside more often, she points out.

That regularity also includes spending dedicated time with your pup, according to Walker. “Consistent, dedicated time with your dog is so important to their happiness,” she explains. “You need to ensure that your dog is fulfilled, and fulfillment comes from structure, leadership, rules, boundaries and discipline, exercise and affection. When your dog is fulfilled, that is a happy dog. And that makes you a good dog parent.”

You Help Them Stay Mentally Stimulated

Part of being someone who really shows up for their dog is making sure they are mentally stimulated. One way to help your pup with that is to provide them with certain toys that encourage them to interact and engage. When you do this, you’ll start noticing more signs that your dog is happy.

“Dogs need opportunities to use their brains as well as move their bodies,” Jespersen says. That means having food puzzles, sniffing games, training sessions, safe chews and interactive play, she says. “These can help prevent boredom while giving dogs healthy ways to search, problem-solve and explore,” she adds. Jespersen stresses that you don’t need a house full of toys, either. “Rotating a few favorites can make them feel new again,” she says. “The key is choosing activities that fit your individual dog’s age, abilities and interests.”

You’re On Top of Their Grooming Needs

Grooming isn’t a vanity thing, it’s important for your dog’s health. So, if you’re someone who books appointments to keep their dog’s nails, teeth and coat in tip-top shape, that’s a great thing.

“Grooming is not only about helping your dog look good. It keeps them comfortable and gives you a chance to spot potential concerns early,” Jespersen explains. “While brushing your dog, trimming their nails, or checking their ears and teeth, you may notice a lump, irritated skin, parasites or another change that needs attention.”

If you’re unsure of your dog’s grooming needs, check in with your vet. After all, some pups need groomed more than others.

You Look Out for Them

There’s no denying that if you put your pup’s safety first, you’re already showing that you’re an amazing guardian to them.

“Dogs rely on us to notice risks they may not understand,” Jespersen reveals. “Caring about safety can mean using a secure leash and properly fitted harness, keeping identification and microchip information current, removing household hazards and supervising interactions with children or other animals.”

It also means thinking ahead about hot weather, car travel and unfamiliar environments, she says. “These precautions may seem small, but they can make a major difference in keeping your dog safe,” Jespersen adds.

You Learn Your Pet’s Language

When it comes to having a pet, learning how to communicate with them and read their behaviors and body language is key. While not every dog owner does this, the ones who do are showing that they are willing to go that extra mile to bond with their dog. By doing so, you’re better able to recognize what your pup is trying to tell you and respond to their needs.

“Learning your dog’s body language shows that you are listening to what they are trying to tell you,” Jespersen says. She recommends looking out for things like them turning away, licking their lips, freezing or showing the whites of their eyes as these can be signs that your dog feels uncomfortable. “Soft eyes, loose muscles and relaxed movement often suggest they feel at ease,” she says. Responding appropriately builds trust between you and your dog, she says.

Polydactyl cats, aka kitties who have an extra toe or toes, are a result of a genetic mutation.

The extra toes can be on the outside of the paws (postaxial), on the inside (preaxial), or a combination (mesoaxial).

The mutation is harmless, but may require some extra paw maintenance and grooming.

According to The Spruce Pets, you see this mutation most commonly with Maine Coon cats, but it can happen with other breeds.

Polydactyl cats can have some advantages with these bonus toes.

With wider paws, they can often balance better and climb, hunt, and capture smaller animals more easily (though, hopefully, if they’re domesticated cats, they don’t need to do too much of these activities).

Making them even cooler, polydactyl cats are associated with one of the most famous writers of all time: Ernest Hemingway.

Often referred to as Hemingway cats, he had a white one named Snowball, whom he adored, and he went on to parent many others (about 30, according to reports).

His home in Key West, Florida, now a museum, is also home to descendants of his original kitties, which include around 60 cats.

The rib test calls for pet parents to run their hands gently along their pet’s rib cage. Ideally, you should be able to easily feel their ribs beneath a thin layer of skin. You shouldn’t have to search or push around to find it. Even if they look fine, if you’re struggling to find their ribs through the skin, it could be an indicator that your pet is carrying extra weight. While the ribs shouldn’t stick out prominently, they should be easy to feel.

Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, have already said they plan to welcome a feline family member. The mayor already started weekly allergy shots in December 2025 to build tolerance. The plan was for him to undergo a seven-month regimen to treat his severe cat allergies and to safely welcome a feline.

Animal Care Centers of NYC Is Dealing With a Very Real Problem

Animal Care Centers cares for animals across New York City’s five boroughs and is currently facing heavy pressure due to the number of animals coming through its doors. According to the campaign materials, ACC houses more than 1,000 animals despite a capacity of about 450.

That makes visibility especially valuable. When people see public figures choosing shelter animals, adoption can feel less like a last resort and more like a natural first choice.

Mamdani is not a mayor who needs to be persuaded about animal welfare. He secured $1.5 million in the FY2027 budget for the city’s first-ever pet food pantry program and expanded access to low-cost spay-and-neuter services in collaboration with the city council.

The latest campaign by Voters For Animal Rights will have him take another step. It will cost him almost nothing and mean a great deal to the people who show up every day at ACC locations.

A simple act of bringing a shelter cat home can encourage other elected officials to consider the animal shelters in their municipalities.
