As dogs get older, they tend to get a little grumpy. My oldest dog is turning 11 this year, and he is legitimately the grumpiest guy I have ever encountered, even though he's also the sweetest. That's just how life with a senior dog is, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

One senior dog has officially entered her Terrible 12s era. Every single thing her mom asks her to do is up for negotiation, and unfortunately, it's equal parts adorable and hilarious. Even if she is the most unhelpful girl ever:

Rachel and Mara Ann are the perfect duo. Mara Ann is no help and makes that her whole personality. Rachel is a super kind and caring dog mom who will do anything for Mara Ann. It could not be a better situation for Mara Ann to spend her golden years in.

Mara Ann is not in any sort of trouble. She has no problems, no mobility issues, nothing. In fact, Rachel took her to the vet, and they diagnosed her as, quote, "a chunkster." My 11-year-old dog shares that diagnosis, so I really can't wait to see what awaits me in his Terrible 12s...

Mara Ann goes outside every day, and whenever she wants to, she walks. However, there are also plenty of times she refuses to move a muscle, even when her mom asks her nicely. She also lives on a farm and has a royal carriage to get around:

This video shared by @vnunez05 on TikTok shows a tiny Macaw sitting in the car, all bundled up in a pet bed, trying to soothe himself to sleep with these teeny little noises that his human describes as "whisper honks."

In a comment, his mom shared that he's just three months old, so this little guy really is brand new to the world. He must be protected at all costs!

Not only does this bird sound so cute, but he's also incredibly gorgeous. Those vibrant colors are everything!

Of course, in other moments that his mom has shared on TikTok (like the video below, where she's feeding him) he's a bit less like an innocent newborn and more like a wild toddler, but just as cute all the same.

Why Birds Make Soft Sounds While Drifting to Sleep

There are a few different reasons why birds might make noises while they're falling asleep, but a big one is known as "flock reassurance," which is a way that they keep themselves safe in what could be vulnerable moments.

Of course, birds use their calls and other sounds to communicate with each other in the wild, and as Road Scholar points out, sometimes, the purpose of that communication is to keep the flock safe from predators. This means that those soft sounds that your bird makes while they're falling asleep could be their way of tricking any predators who might be around into thinking they're still awake so they will be left alone.

Birds will also call to each other at night to establish their territory. Once they've found a cozy place to sleep, they want everyone to know that it's taken. No sharing!

The sweet baby in the TikTok video fortunately doesn't have to defend himself while he's snoozing, but he totally could if he needed to. Well, maybe if he learns to sound just a bit less adorable.

I love going into a store and finding out they have some kind of pet. Like how some Bodegas have cats, or gas station dogs. I once went to a bookstore that had a parrot! He was awesome. I spent too much money there just because I loved him.

Recently, one greenhouse shared that they have a resident cat. His name is Dixon, and his job is simple: walk around and make everyone smile. Note that "sample the catnip" is not in the job description, but he does that anyway:

Hook's Greenhouse seems like such a fun place to shop, as long as you're not looking for catnip. The catnip is all taken: Dixon, their shop cat, likes to lie on the catnip and test it out. He prefers the fresh stuff to the dried catnip you can find in toys.

Obviously, Hook's Greenhouse's catnip is the best stuff in town. It's:

• Pruned with love.
• Pre-loaded with a couple of cat hairs in every bundle.

If a cat were rolling around on regular plants, I would probably issue some type of warning about not letting them do that: you never know if the person purchasing it is allergic. However, it's catnip. I doubt people are just buying it because they think it's pretty.

Is Fresh or Dried Catnip Better?

Clearly, Dixon prefers fresh catnip. It's the only kind he gets, since he's the greenhouse cat. If you want Dixon-tested catnip, you'll have to get the fresh stuff from Hook's.

Both types of catnip are safe and completely fine for cats, and they'll take whatever they can get. However, if you really want to give them a treat, fresh catnip is the way to go. It has more oil in it, which means it lasts longer and is more fun for them.

Joey the Golden Retriever frequents a certain café in town, but it isn't for the table scraps. This attention-seeking pup hangs out there for the extra helpings of affection he receives by making himself practically unavoidable to patrons as they exit. He positions himself right in front of the door, and his genius strategy makes us want to visit this restaurant ASAP so we can give him all the pets he deserves.

The video says that Joey's strategy only has a 50% success rate, but how is that possible? Fans like me are mystified because, as one person comments, "The absolute pile-up I would cause just sitting there and giving all the love to that goodest boy" is real. It's seems inhuman to ignore him.

Why Golden Retrievers Are Basically Hardwired to Love Every Person They Meet

A Golden isn't just born friendly — it was built for human connection from the ground up. A 2017 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that breeds like Golden Retrievers carry genetic variations in oxytocin receptor genes — oxytocin being the same "love hormone" that bonds mothers to babies and makes hugs feel good. Goldens don't necessarily produce more of it, but they respond to it more strongly than other breeds. In other words, human connection doesn't just feel nice to them — it hits differently, right at the genetic level. So, Joey isn't just being cute. He's doing exactly what his DNA is telling him to do.

According to the AKC, a Golden's "friendly and affectionate temperament makes it an excellent pet and companion." And as this article goes on to say (as if the author knew Joey personally), "This playful breed tends to greet everyone—strangers included—with a wagging tail. They are known for their goofy, attention-seeking behaviors that delight owners and passersby alike."

This social predisposition is also why Goldens are so naturally suited to therapy and service work. Their DNA literally drives them to seek eye contact, read human emotions, and thrive on interaction. Which is probably why, when given the choice, a Golden will always pick the spot where the most humans are likely to show up.

In the TikTok from @peggyadamsarl, Moon sat in her kennel at the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League with a sweet look on her face that radiated her gentle spirit. Several clips of the video showed the precious pooch with all seven of her pups, rotating between nursing them (all at once), snuggling, and just staying close to her canine kids.

Moon never looked impatient and was a constant presence for her adorable puppies. All of her fur babies are currently thriving in foster homes. Now with a cone on her head following her spay surgery, Moon is longing for a forever home.

"Everyone loves puppies, but what about their mom?" the caption posed. "Adoptable Moon deserves SO much love!"

The canine cutie took her mama role seriously and made sure all of her puppies were loved and well-fed. With her entire litter launched, Moon hopes for her own fresh start.

Moon Is 'Gentlest Girl'

Pistachio, who appears to be a Tabby cat, seemed to form an instant connection with the Orange Catsin this family, named Cashie and Almond (we assume Pistachio was his adopted name).

The trio of kitties enjoys lounging on furniture and cat trees, grooming each other, watching TV, and taking walks together on their leashes.

How To Welcome a Stray Cat Into Your Family

When welcoming a stray cat into your family, the first thing to remember is patience.

You have to move slowly when welcoming a stray kitty into your home.

First, offer them food, water, and a safe and separate space from the other cats and animals in the house.

For a cat who has been living outside, a sudden change like this could be very overwhelming.

Once you've done that, you should take the new kitty to the vet as soon as possible to make sure they don't have any health issues or injuries, as well as fleas or parasites.

After all this, the new cat should be introduced to the other pets in the house with supervised visits.

Help bring routine to the stray cat's life with their own bed, litter box, and daily schedule.

Clearly, Pistachio had a smooth transition into his forever home and took to his new family right away, but other kitties may take a bit longer to settle into their new lives.

Kittens are always going to be a little crazy, but that's part of why everybody loves them. The kitten phase will eventually chill out a little, though most of them will stay rambunctious for several years after the kitten phase has ended. Especially if they have siblings!

One little kitten has a sibling who knows exactly what it's like to be annoying. He's a Maine Coon! So, when his new little brother decided to use him as a giant chew toy, he was completely unbothered:

The Maine Coonies are no strangers to having baby siblings here and there. Their mom is always fostering kittens, and she's had some real crazies!

The Maine Coon in this video is Dexter: he's huge, and usually, he's mostly impartial toward the kittens. He's a gentle boy, never wanting to hurt anyone or do anything that could make his family upset. He takes good care of the kittens who find their way into his home.

This latest kitten is named Ringo, and according to their mom, Ringo is the son Dexter absolutely did not want. It's really funny because he's so grumpy and loving at the same time, often literally hissing, grumbling, hooting, and hollering all while showering them with love:

Ringo is very special in a lot of ways, but this area is not one of them. Dexter grooms every baby he sees, even if he whines about it all the while. As a big sibling, that's his right: I'm 8.5 years older than my sister, and I definitely asked to hold her and then complained the whole time when she was a baby.

Dexter's mom said in a comment that, though Ringo will soon be off to his forever home, there's not going to be a shortage of foster kittens in her home! She runs an animal rescue, and right now is just the beginning of Kitten Season.

What Is 'Kitten Season?'

Every spring, something inside of me awakens and forces me to talk everyone's ear off about kitten season. It's important to me, and to these animals, that as many people as possible are educated about Kitten Season and its dangers.

Kitten Season isn't so much one period, but a 6-ish month stretch (April-October). It starts when the weather warms up and kittens continue to be born until it cools back down. This leads to:

• Inbreeding.
• Widespread communicable disease.
• Kittens being injured/killed by predators.
• Dumped kittens when people let their cat out and she comes home pregnant.

Kitten Season often seems worse in April/May because very few kittens are born in the wintertime, at least in places with defined seasons. In warmer areas, like Florida, for example, cats are having babies year-round. They also have some of the highest numbers of cats in shelters.

Luckily, Dexter's mom is doing her part during this difficult time, and you can, too! Even something as simple as turning in kittens to the shelter, donating to your local TNR organization, and just checking in any boxes/bags you see on the road could save lives!

Soccer fans may THINK they’re emotionally prepared for this summer’s biggest international tournament. But respectfully? Nothing could possibly prepare anyone for a Chihuahua leading Team Mexico while 48 rescue puppies sprint around a soccer field completely ignoring the rules of organized sports.

And that’s exactly why LG Channels’ upcoming World Pup event looks so ridiculously fun.

Premiering June 10, LG Channels World Pup transforms rescue puppies into tiny international soccer stars in a bracket style competition inspired by this summer’s massive global soccer tournament.

The four-part event comes from Bright Spot Content, the producers behind The Puppy Bowl, so viewers should probably prepare themselves for:

• dramatic puppy rivalries
• accidental tackles
• chaotic zoomies
• emotional support barking
• at least one athlete getting distracted mid play by absolutely nothing

The competition features eight national squads, each captained by one of their country’s iconic dog breeds.

That Means Viewers Will See:

• a Boston Terrier representing the United States
• a Chihuahua leading Team Mexico
• a King Charles Cavalier representing England

...along with dozens of other rescue puppies competing for the coveted LG Channels World Pup Trophy. The idea of tiny puppies participating in an international sports tournament while having absolutely no understanding of strategy feels deeply important to me emotionally.

Trying to maintain order throughout the adorable madness is former U.S. World Cup veteran and CBS Sports host Jimmy Conrad, who serves as the tournament’s official “Rufferee” -- which sounds significantly harder than actual professional soccer.

According to LG Channels, Conrad previously handled international competition during the 2006 World Cup, but has “never dealt with 48 puppies who don’t know what an offside call is.” And honestly? That feels accurate.

The event also includes appearances from fan favorite dog influencers Chili and Lumi, who help provide commentary and scene stealing moments throughout the tournament.

Meanwhile, AirCorg makes a special appearance to deliver the tournament’s final prediction because apparently sports analysis becomes infinitely better when delivered by a corgi.

But beyond all the tiny soccer chaos is a genuinely meaningful mission. Every puppy featured in World Pup is adoptable.

LG Channels partnered with shelters and rescue organizations across the country to spotlight dogs searching for forever homes while also highlighting the people working tirelessly in animal rescue every day.

Dachshunds already come into the world with a strange little intensity. They are tiny, opinionated, dramatic, and somehow able to make every ordinary event feel deeply personal. It follows the kind of morning that probably looks like work from the outside, but from the inside, it's clearly something much bigger. His mom gets his bath ready, helps him with his harness, and moves through each step with the calm rhythm of someone who has done this many times and still means every bit of it. Henry, meanwhile, is sweet throughout the whole thing. Not fussy, not frantic, not fighting the process. Just there with her, settled into the routine, looking like he knows exactly what comes next and exactly who's helping him through it.

The video isn't trying to be inspirational in some big, polished way. It's just intimate. You're watching a real morning between a dog and the person who knows how to care for him. The post hints at that by framing these mornings as something especially meaningful, and you can feel it immediately. This isn't, “Look how hard this is.” It's, “Look how much love can fit inside a routine.”

And I think that's why people are falling for Henry so fast.

A lot of us know that disabled or special-needs dogs don't just change the structure of a day; they change the emotional shape of a life. I had a special-needs dog named Emmie, and she truly had one of the biggest impacts on my life. I will never forget her. So watching Henry’s mom move through this routine with so much steadiness and care got me right in the chest, because there's something about these pups. They ask a lot, yes. But they also give back something huge and difficult to explain to people who have never loved one.

Some animals are rescued or brought to the shelter as tiny fur babies. Puppies and kittens are usually the first pets to be adopted, yet sometimes a few can get overlooked and end up in a cage for too long.

In the TikTok from @beaconofhoperescue, Auburn was inside her kennel but verbally expressing her distress.

"Auburn cries to get out of her cage," the onscreen text shared. "She's been with us 2+ years since she was a kitten."

The pretty kitty is always the last fur baby to be put back in her cage because staff members are heartbroken by her cries. Auburn is a very affectionate and loving cat who would make a wonderful addition to any family.

"She's a complete love bug and just wants pets and belly rubs all the time," the story continued as Auburn leaned in to receive gentle pets and jumped around a cat tree. The caption added, "We don’t understand how nobody wants her... she will love you endlessly!"

The feline fur baby has a scar near her eye from an injury from kittenhood, which may be a deterrent for potential pet parents.

"Her brother scratched her eye when they were little," the text explained. "We think that's why she hasn't been given a chance."

How Is Auburn Now?

The rescue's Instagram post announced the wonderful news that Auburn was adopted.

"The power of social media changed a life," the caption announced, along with images of Auburn being held by her new mom. "Her forever mom found her through our Facebook, and now Auburn gets the happy ending we have dreamed about for so long."

Signs Your Dog Needs More Exercise

While there are plenty of ways you can tell your dog needs more exercise, there are typically two types of signs to look out for. 

“Dogs that lack stimulation will typically create their own ways to burn off excess energy," says Iryna Smyrnova, a zoologist and veterinarian at MeoWoff. She says some common examples include:

• Chewing furniture
• Nonstop barking
• Running back and forth (pacing)
• Digging
• Seeking constant attention

In addition, Smyrnova says there are some less obvious signs your dog needs more exercise that may go unnoticed, including:

• Weight gain
• Irregular sleep habits
• Inability to settle down

“Those signs could mean your pet is not getting the required amount of physical or mentally stimulating activities each day," she says.

Why 15 Minutes of Sniffing Equals a 1-Hour Walk

For dogs that might struggle with extra physical activity or more arduous games, there is another solution that can help increase their exercise.

“Providing your pet the ability to stop and smell during a walk provides a strong cognitive function because most dogs use scent to identify their surroundings," Smyrnova says. "Sometimes a 'sniff-walk' at a slower pace can give the same level of satisfaction as a longer, faster-paced walk, depending upon your pet's needs. This is true for senior dogs, anxious dogs and any breed of dog that has a high sense of smell.” 

A good ‘sniff-walk’ is the perfect way to get your dog moving and engaged, even if you're going at a slower speed. They'll get the benefits of both exercise and mental stimulation just like they would on a longer walk, while still moving at a manageable pace.

How to Safely Increase Your Dog’s Activity Level (The 10% Rule)

While you may want to jumpstart your dog’s activity level ASAP, it’s not wise to go full steam ahead right away. Instead, try the 10 percent rule, which Smyrnova says helps you “significantly decrease your risk of causing injury to your pet by limiting the extreme variation in speed of a single exercise session." Some potential risks may include joint strain, muscle injuries, irritated paw pads and overheating.

“Many owners don't realize how well they know their pet until something goes wrong with one of these types of exercises," Smyrnova says. "Pay attention to your pet's recovery time from an exercise session. If your pet shows signs of stiffness, limping, exhaustion or reluctance to get up the next morning, this could signal that the intensity was too much for your pet.”

To help keep these risks at bay, try slowly increasing your dog's exercise by 10 percent, which may look like adding a bit more distance to a long walk, adding a 'sniff-walk' to their routine or adding an additional short walk to their day.

“Unlike walking, exercising with your pet should always be based on what works best for that specific pet,” Smyrnova says. “Each pet has unique characteristics that determine what type of exercise is right for them. Examples include their breed, age, body condition, medical history and personality."

She says a young working breed dog may love going on hikes and playing advanced training games, but a brachycephalic breed or older dog would likely benefit from short, low-impact periods of exercise that's broken down into smaller segments of time throughout the day.

Regardless of what type of exercise is right for your pup, the important part is making sure their mind and body stay active every day. Enough exercise can help your dog stay healthy and help them feel their best for years to come.

That skill is actually rare in the animal kingdom. Animals that can keep a beat include dolphins, cockatoos, and some sea lions.

Dogs can hear patterns and tones, but the unexpected and chaotic beats of music combined with high frequencies can cause them anxiety and stress. While dogs can't keep a beat, studies show they do prefer reggae, soft rock, and classical music.

Ducklings are supposed to follow their moms.

That's the whole deal. Tiny feet, tiny peeps, tiny little parade line behind one much more competent adult. So when a lone Wood Duck duckling starts following a human family home instead, the whole thing immediately feels a little wrong, a little fragile, and a lot emotional.

It starts with that heartbreaking little setup: a tiny Wood Duck duckling, alone, somehow ending up behind a family instead of where the duck belongs. The video caption says as much in spirit: This baby basically trailed them home, which is not the kind of thing that happens if the world is going exactly according to plan. And once you know that, every second of the clip feels heavier. Not dramatic in a forced way. Just quietly urgent.

The post fills in the rest of the story. This family didn't just shrug and keep walking. They noticed. They understood that this baby needed help. And that's where the whole thing shifts from sad to beautiful. The duckling was taken to wildlife rehab, where the baby can be cared for until strong enough to make it back to the wild, where the little duck belongs.

Because one of the most moving things about rescue stories isn't just that someone stepped in, it is how they stepped in. You can tell Ranger, the Golden Retriever, knows he has met this dog before, and she is very important to him.

He can't wait to smell her and then tell his parents about it (and get a belly rub).

Can Dogs Recognize Siblings After Years Apart?

Though Ranger clearly had familiarity with this dog, was he aware that it was his actual sister and that they shared the same parents?

Research on this subject is somewhat limited, but a few studies have found that dogs can recognize their parents or at least have a familial sense of them, but it depends on the amount of time they were separated.

The most conclusive study was published in the journal Animal Behaviour and cited by ScienceInsights.com, and found that mother dogs separated from their puppies as early as 8 to 12 weeks of age could still identify their offspring two years later.

The Animal Behaviour study, which was conducted by Peter Hepper at Queen’s University Belfast, also found that at 4 to 5.5 weeks of age, puppies showed recognition of their siblings as well as their mother, and it was all scent-based.

However, there's no conclusive evidence that dog siblings could recognize each other after a prolonged absence.

However, it does seem like Ranger knows this other Golden Retriever a bit more than a stranger he just met off the street, so maybe very deep down, in his own dog way, he knows this is a special connection.

My experience is not unusual. As it turns out, many dogs and cats are sensitive to noises like the smoke alarm, whether it's fully going off or simply chirping. The reason for this is simple: dogs and cats have far more sensitive hearing than us humans do, which means sounds that we may not even notice may cause them distress or discomfort. Certain noises may make your dog or cat feel anxious, on edge or even afraid.

But beyond an evil malfunctioning smoke detector, are there other sounds that can make your pet feel unsafe? And how can you help your pet feel safer in the presence of these noises? Is there a way to create a "safe zone" for your pet in the event a sound they don't like happens to occur?

To get more information on these topics, we spoke with a veterinarian about common household noises that may make your pet feel unsafe, how to make them feel more at ease and more. Here's what we learned.

Household Noises That Make Pets Feel Unsafe

"We often think of loud, infrequent noises (fireworks, gunshots, thunderstorms) as being the most stressful sounds a dog or cat can experience, but animals have much more sensitive hearing than people, and a lot of normal household sounds that may not bother their human companions can provide frequent lower-grade stressors in a pet’s life," Dr. Weeth says.

Common household sounds that may cause distress in your pet include the following:

• Microwave ovens (running and beeping)
• Vacuum cleaners (regular or automatic/robotic)
• Smoke detector chirping
• Smoke alarms going off
• Unfamiliar car sounds
• Ultrasonic small animal deterrents
• Lawnmowers

While there's no way to prevent pets from experiencing these upsetting sounds, there are ways to help them become more comfortable when they do happen.

"These sounds are often at a higher frequency than human ears can detect, and can be part of everyday life in many households, so there isn’t really a way to prevent pets from reacting or to completely avoid them," Dr. Weeth says. "Gradually exposing them to these sounds ideally starting at a young age (desensitization) and providing positive associations (counterconditioning) or rewards can help mitigate their stress response."

How to Create a Soundproof "Safe Zone" for Your Pet

"There really isn’t a way to make a 'safe zone,' as many of these sounds are part of normal everyday life, so gradual desensitization and creating positive associations is key to helping pets deal with life in a typical home," Dr. Weeth says.

However, in the event of an infrequent sound exposure, Weeth says you can create a safe haven for your pet.

"For the really loud, infrequent sound exposures (like fireworks or thunderstorms), create a safe place in your home, ideally with no external windows or doors for better sound dampening, and talk with your veterinarian about medical management of short-term anxiety if needed," Dr. Weeth says.

Even though we can't stop common household noises or celebratory fireworks from happening, with these tips we can at least make our homes feel safer for our furry friends and help reduce their stress around these sounds.

Nick and Duke set out on their ride and made a quick stop at the self-wash station to get a nice bath in before heading to grandma's. Duke doesn't even look over his shoulder when they arrive, immediately bolting through her front door and into the house.

Why Dogs Get So Excited by Other People

Dogs get so excited by new people for a plethora of reasons. For starters, dogs are highly social and bond differently with individual people. When it comes to new faces or faces they don't necessarily see every day, part of what excites a dog is the novelty of the "new" person. Similar to a new toy or treat, the new person is a break in routine which is very fun for a lot of dogs.

Additionally, if the person (like...say a grandma) is constantly showering the dog in praise, love, and treats, the dog will associate them with that behavior. Dogs are also big energy mirrors, so they mimic and replicate what they see from humans. On top of all of this, dogs are also pack creatures, so getting to be around the perceived "most fun" member of the pack is always going to be a win win to your dog.

There's not much better than learning you're a dog's favorite person. May we all be so lucky as to have a Duke who will literally jump for joy at hearing our "name" in our lives!
