I absolutely love stories about dogs who seem completely uninterested in making friends until one very specific pup walks into their life. Butter, a Great Pyrenees and Husky mix, has apparently found that dog in Joon Poonie.

Butter usually prefers his own company. His human explains in the post caption that he’s happiest patrolling fences and being left alone, while Joon isn’t exactly the social butterfly of the neighborhood, either. She gets annoyed with most other dogs.

Put these two together, though, and all that aloof behavior disappears.

In the video, Butter is standing in the living room after learning he’s going to see Joon, and he immediately starts howling like he’s been asked to perform a love ballad.

This isn’t a subtle reaction.

His human jokingly calls it the song of his love, and apparently they even send videos ahead so Joon can hear that her boyfriend is on his way. I’m sorry, but that might be one of the cutest pre-date rituals I’ve ever seen.

Butter’s whole personality seems to change when Joon enters the conversation. The fence patrol can wait. Solitude is canceled. His girlfriend is coming over.

The best part is knowing how unusual this is for both dogs. Butter isn’t normally handing out affection to everyone he meets, and Joon has very selective standards of her own. Somehow, they choose each other.

I know exactly how sweet that kind of bond can be. My dog gets ridiculously excited when she realizes her best friends, Carrie and Marge, are coming over. The anticipation starts before they even arrive, and when they leave, she’s visibly disappointed that the party is over.

That’s why Butter’s howling gets me. Dogs might not define relationships the way we do, but they can make their favorite people and pups incredibly obvious.

His human says Butter is becoming more affectionate as he gets older, but Joon is clearly still his special girl. She even has her own little “awoo,” which makes this feel less like a playdate and more like two pups maintaining a musical romance.

I’d like to think Butter is simply making sure she knows he’s coming.

Can Dogs Really Have a Favorite Dog Friend?

Dogs don’t have to adore every pup they meet to enjoy meaningful friendships. The AKC explains that many adult dogs are selective or tolerant rather than universally social, and they may genuinely enjoy spending time with familiar dog friends.

If your dog has a chosen buddy:

• Let them be selective. A few great friendships can suit your dog better than meeting everyone.
• Keep play comfortable. Watch both dogs and give them breaks before excitement becomes too much.
• Respect the friendship. Regular positive meetups can give both dogs something wonderful to look forward to.

Pets that are raised together form unbreakable bonds. My two dogs are practically inseparable. When we first brought home my Pug mix, my senior Dachshund was less than thrilled. Now, she’s total besties with her fur baby brother.

Polly and Toes are two senior cats who were both brought to NAWS Humane Society and now need to find a new home together.

The TikTok from @franflight told the precious pair’s story and how they ended up at the shelter.

“Polly and Toes were surrendered at 12 years old due to absolutely no fault of their own,” the on-screen text explained. “Their [parent] became disabled, lost their home, and was forced to find a safe space for them. These two girls were clearly loved throughout their life. Not only by their [parent], but by each other.”

The two black-and-white cats are obviously close and supporting each other through this traumatic transition. Taken from the only home and parent they’ve ever known and now living in a chaotic and unfamiliar environment is overwhelming for these senior felines.

“They have leaned on each other through this difficult time,” the story continued. “They deserve to get out of the shelter together.”

Cats who are emotionally attached to each other should not be separated, especially if they’ve lived their entire lives together. There are several benefits to adopting a bonded feline pair, including:

In one simple, resounding word: YES! Cockatoos bond very strongly with one person in the house. While they might have close relationships with others, like human siblings or friends, their primal instincts dictate their social bonds, making one special person their most common go-to.

Gunner is an 8-year-old dog who was left at Cobb County Animal Services when his lifelong family moved out of state. The heartbroken pooch could not be consoled, until his story completely changed.

🎉 GUNNER’S FREEDOM RIDE 🎉 While volunteering at the shelter the other day, I walked into the kennels and all I could hear was a dog howling. Between all the barking, that howling was the one thing that stood out to me. I started walking through the kennels, trying to find out who was crying like that. That’s when I found Gunner. He was howling and crying, with the saddest look on his face… 🥺 I looked at his kennel card and learned that Gunner was an 8-year-old senior who had lived his entire life with the same family, since he was a puppy. But just a few days ago, his family moved to another state and decided Gunner couldn’t come with them. So they left him at the shelter. 💔 I took Gunner for a walk, hoping I could cheer him up, but I couldn’t. All he did was cry and look around, searching for something he had lost… That’s when I recorded Gunner’s video and shared his story with the world. And that’s when it reached the person we had been looking for… 🥹 His new mom watched the video of Gunner crying and missing his family. It made her cry too, and she knew she had to bring happiness back into his life. The very next day, her husband drove to the shelter to meet Gunner. The moment they met, he just knew they were meant to be together. He didn’t hesitate for a second. That same day, Gunner went home. I will never forget the moment Gunner met his new dad. It was the first time I had seen him truly happy. He was excited, wagging his tail, and finally just being himself again. The TikTok from @sharing.lov3 revealed how being abandoned by his family left Gunner in total despair.

“This is how Gunner was spending his days at the shelter,” the on-screen text shared as the sound of Gunner’s cries could be heard throughout the kennels. “Howling by himself in his kennel after his family of 8 years moved and left him here.”

A shelter staff member previously took Gunner outside to cheer him up, but the precious pooch just kept crying and searching for his family in the hopes they would return for him.

“He kept looking around, over and over again, almost as if he was waiting for someone to show up,” the caption of the previous post explained. “Almost as if he was hoping his family would come back for him.”

Gunner Has a True Forever Family

Gunner’s video was shared and won over the heart of a family who couldn’t wait to meet him. They knew they could bring happiness back into the canine cutie’s life and give him the love he deserved. Gunner’s dad immediately drove to the shelter to bring him home.

“The moment they meet is magical,” the story continued as Gunner’s tail went into full wag mode upon meeting his new father. “This is the happiest we have ever seen Gunner since his arrival.”

The father and his new fur baby had an instant connection. Gunner and this loving family were a perfect match.

“The moment they met, he just knew they were meant to be together,” the caption explained as Gunner bounded into the car for his freedom ride. “He didn’t hesitate for a second. That same day, Gunner went home.”

Why Are Male Tortoiseshell Cats So Rare?

As discussed, male Tortoiseshell cats are considered a genetic anomaly because that combination of coloration typically requires two X chromosomes.

Even if a male kitten inherits one version of the color gene, the pattern won’t show up on his coat.

However, Stark, a male Tortoiseshell kitten, is most likely a result of a male cat being born with an extra X chromosome, resulting in an XXY chromosome.

So this little guy gets to have that beautiful coat and be super unique.

However, male Tortie cats tend to be sterile due to this extra X chromosome.

A very small, very determined rooster comes sprinting toward the scene, like he just heard someone yell for security. He is fat. He is focused. Mighty, however, might be generous.

The video caption explains that this little guy does his best to keep the peace, and that’s exactly what it looks like. He charges right into the middle of the hen drama with absolutely no concern that several of the birds involved appear capable of outweighing him by a cheeseburger or two.

I love him already.

One commenter admitted they spent the beginning of the video trying to figure out which bird was even the rooster before he suddenly appeared from nowhere. Another basically gave his entrance the full emergency-rescue soundtrack: Help is on the way!

That’s the exact energy.

The funniest part is how completely serious he looks about the assignment. There is no hesitation and no apparent awareness of his dimensions. Trouble has appeared in his flock, and this extremely portable rooster is responding.

I don’t know if the hens requested his assistance, but our tiny referee clearly believes conflict resolution falls under his responsibilities. The fact that he has to practically launch himself into the situation only makes his confidence more impressive.

I have hens myself, and I keep thinking I’d love to get them one of these little guys. Bantam roosters are ridiculously cute, and watching this pocket-sized gentleman take flock management so seriously isn’t helping me resist the idea.

He may weigh approximately one cheeseburger, but in his own mind, I’m pretty sure he is head of security, conflict management, and general barnyard operations.

Honestly, I would do anything to protect him while he believes he’s protecting everybody else.

A little squabbling can be completely normal in a flock. Chickens establish a social hierarchy, or “pecking order,” and the University of Kentucky’s poultry extension explains that adult birds may fight when that order is challenged, or something changes.

If your chickens start getting feisty:

• Watch the intensity. Brief posturing can be normal, but relentless attacks aren’t.
• Check for injuries. Separate a hurt bird so things don’t escalate.
• Think about what changed. New flock members can temporarily disrupt the pecking order.

Moon’s Maine Coons is home to some of the sweetest Tortie kittens ever. This one in particular is extra precious: she has a big orange dot on the back of her neck. It’s a change of pace from the typical tightly mottled black-and-orange color of most Torties!

The kitten in this video is actually a Smoke Tortie, which is even cooler: when she grows up, her coat will have a little bit of a haze to it. In a “Smoke” cat, the pigment toward the tip of the fur gets lighter.

“Adding variety through different walks, training, play, sniffing, licking, foraging and other enrichment can be beneficial and help keep dogs mentally and physically engaged,” Dr. Kaplan says.

3 Subtle Signs Your Dog Is Already Suffering From Late-Summer Stress

“The important thing is to look for a change from your dog’s individual baseline, since behavior that is normal for one dog may be unusual for another,” Dr. Kaplan says. “These signs aren’t specific to stress though, and changes in behavior can also have an underlying medical cause, so persistent or significant changes are worth discussing with your veterinarian.”

1. Seeking more attention than usual

If your pup is acting clingier than normal, this is a potential sign of stress. “Following their owners around the house when they finally get home can be a sign that dogs are seeking attention they feel they are missing,” explains Dr. Ronit Berdugo, a veterinarian and pet health expert for SynergyLabs.

2. An increase in destructive behaviors

“Chewing on household items is one example of a behavior that can result from increased boredom and stress,” Dr. Berdugo says.

3. More licking and overgrooming

How to Run a ‘Mock Work Week’ to Prepare Your Dog for Fall

Preparing your dog for the upcoming schedule changes in autumn is important to help them adjust to the adjustments in their routine. A “mock work week” is one great way to do so. Below are the steps you can take to try this strategy out yourself:

1. Set your alarm.

First, adjust your alarm to be the time you plan on waking up during the school or work week. This will help both of you get used to waking up earlier than usual.

2. Shift meal times.

In those cases, seeking veterinary care is a good idea, as there are multiple approaches to help with that, such as training, medications and even a probiotic like Calming Care.”

It may be surprising to learn that the world’s fastest dog is one dog breed that doesn’t need a big backyard. Shocking, right? That’s mostly due to their laidback personality, because despite their reputation for speed, Greyhounds can be unexpectedly chill and homebodies at heart.

“While they’re speedy, they like to spend the vast majority of their time relaxing on the sofa,” says Annie-Mae Levy, professional dog trainer and behaviorist at Woofz. “This means that one good run around a day tends to be plenty for them, and thus they are ideally suited to city living where outdoor space is cramped or unavailable.”

Although, if you want to bring your dog out for a run, you can always visit a dog park or private rental yard so your Greyhound can have a safe place to stretch their legs. “Puzzle feeders, treat searches and short training sessions can also keep them mentally active inside without requiring a large living space,” Jespersen adds.

If your furbay seems to be mirroring your stride on walks, consider it a message that they love you. “When your dog walks in pace with you, not pulling ahead, not lagging behind, not locked onto their own agenda, that tells you something important: They are fully engaged with you,” says Shannon Walker, dog trainer and founder of Northwest Battle Buddies.

To be fair, some dogs are simply too excited to ever do this, so if you haven’t experienced this bonding behavior, don’t feel bad. It doesn’t mean your pup loves you any less.

They Turn Your Stuff Into Chew Toys

It may seem a little puzzling when your dog insists on chewing on your dirty laundry or stinky shoes when they have their own toys. But this admittedly annoying doggy habit can be a strange sign of affection, according to Molly Jespersen, Camp Bow Wow‘s training specialist.

Though, it’s alright if you want to break this unusual dog behavior, even though it’s one way they show you matter to them. To do so, Jespersen suggests handing your dog a treat in exchange for your underwear or gym clothes.

They Share Your Rhythm

Whether you realize it or not, you have a rhythm throughout your day. Sometimes you move faster than others, like when you’re rushing to get out the door or winding down for bed. Your pup can end up sharing that same rhythm.

“It’s almost a discipline you’ve built together,” Walker eplains. “They’re checking in, adjusting, staying connected. And that matters more than most people realize.”

So, while you might not be aware this is happening, once you start to notice it, you’ll see how fond your furry companion is of you and that this is one way they show it.

They Play Real-Life Space Invaders

Personal space may not be a thing with your four-legged sidekick—and that’s actually a good thing, since crowding you is a sweet gesture on their part. “Your dog has learned that your space is a safe and welcoming place, and they are drawn to it,” Walker shares. “When they lean in and you respond with touch and affection, which most of us do instinctively, you are reinforcing that behavior, telling them that closeness is something you welcome, too.”

They Can Settle Down Around You

How dogs show love isn’t always over-the-top. In fact, Jespersen says being relaxed in your presence is a way your pup reveals they love and trust you.

At the same time, Walker expresses that your dog should enjoy being close to you without feeling like they can’t cope when you’re apart. “The goal is balance,” she says. “You absolutely want your dog to want to be close to you. But it should come from a dog that feels secure and settled, not one that feels it cannot cope without constant physical contact.” 

They’re Your Emotional Mirror

One of the most adorable ways dogs can show their bond to you is by mirroring your energy. When your pup feels close to you, they may naturally respond to your mood and energy. “When you are calm and settled, your dog is calm and settled,” Walker notes. “When you are animated and excited, they light up right alongside you. It happens almost without thinking, and yet it is one of the most telling signs of a truly connected relationship.” 

That emotional connection can be a sign of just how much your dog is tuned in to you. Though, as a pet parent, remember that there is power in that loving reflection and you can be the source of how you want your pup to behave. “If you want a calmer dog, start with yourself,” Walker suggests.

They Play Santa

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why does my dog bring me toys?” There’s actually a heartwarming reason behind their behavior. After all, your pooch knows, sharing is caring.

“When a dog brings you a toy or an object, most people’s first instinct is to think it’s simply about play and sometimes it is,” Walker says. “But what’s really happening beneath the surface is far more interesting.” Dogs will notice that you light up and engage with them when they bring you a toy. “They file that away,” Walker says. “It builds affection and engagement on both sides, and that is never a small thing. It is mutually beneficial.”
