There’s a vicious animal on the loose in New Hampshire, and no one is entirely sure what it is.

Since August 30, local police have logged at least three attacks on people, all unprovoked. Surveillance video from one of the incidents that took place in Lebanon, NH, shows the animal charging a man near his U-Haul van, latching onto his leg, and hanging on for dear life. The man successfully shakes free of its bite, but the relentless beast only comes back for more. Another person, this time a woman, approaches the scene and does her best to avoid the animal’s assault. See for yourself:

Lebanon police have some theories as to what this creature could be, but no one has been able to offer a definitive answer. They say the animal might be a gray fox or a fisher cat, and a very, very aggressive one at that. Comments on the video show that people are intrigued by this story and also amused by how it’s being reported.

“‘A small gray something or another?!'” questions one person, regarding the anchor’s reference.

“‘If you see it, don’t touch it?!’ Looks to me you don’t get much of a choice!” points out another.

“I am 33 years old! Why is this my first time finding out what a fisher cat is?” asks a third.

But the potential danger – and the obvious lack of information – is no laughing matter.

Here’s what we do know, based on reporting in Boston.com:

Police seem to have narrowed it to two candidates, and they’re very different animals. A gray fox is a small wild mammal — roughly the size of a house cat, shy, and most active around dawn and dusk. A fisher isn’t a cat at all, despite its name. It’s a large member of the weasel family, dark, low to the ground, and carnivorous.

What the two have in common is that neither one wants anything to do with you. Healthy foxes and fishers avoid humans, which is why this concerns officials. An animal that charges strangers in a parking lot, especially repeatedly, is not behaving like itself.

Which is why officials are pointing to this animal as possibly having rabies. Nothing is confirmed — the animal hasn’t been caught or tested — but the pattern is a familiar one in New Hampshire, where rabid foxes have bitten multiple people in past incidents. Anyone bitten or scratched is being told to seek medical attention immediately. And of course, do not approach or touch the animal, whether it gives you the option or not.

Dogs end up in animal shelters for all kinds of reasons, but it feels especially devastating to find out that one is there because they were surrendered. They had a family one day, and now, they don’t? It has to be so confusing for a pup.

One sweet Shepherd named Leeloo has ended up in a shelter after being surrendered, and it’s heartbreaking to see how sad she is.

Leeloo is 109 pounds of pure, sweet, docile love. She just lost her family at 3 years old and is so sad I could cry. A dog rescuer named Nikki on TikTok shared Leeloo’s story, along with the most devastating footage of this poor dog “behind bars” as she awaits her next forever home.

This fluffy sweetheart is three years old, weighs 109 pounds, and is in a shelter in Carlsbad, California. Nikki described her as being similar to a “sloth.”

“She moves very slow and is so sweet but doesn’t seem to have a lot of energy for 3 years old,” she wrote.

Maybe she’ll find her energy when she finds her new home? My fingers are crossed that her time in the shelter is as short as possible. She deserves so much better than this.

Adopting any dog is always going to come with an adjustment period of some kind, but that adjustment period may be a little more challenging when you’re adopting a dog who has been surrendered by their original humans.

Not only will they be separated from people they’ve formed bonds and an attachment to, but they’ll probably also be very confused — after all, it’s not like they understand why their family is gone and now they’re being introduced to a new one.

The ASPCA recommends avoiding any stressful interactions with your dog for the first month or so, like taking them to a crowded place or visiting a dog park. Let your dog be the one to initiate contact with you, and give them plenty of space to figure out their new surroundings — and be prepared for accidents, even if they’re housebroken.

Though it may take a lot of patience and time for your dog to feel comfy in their new home, in the end, it will be so worth it when you realize they finally trust their new humans. It’s tough, but you’ve saved a life. That’s something to truly be proud of.

Dogs have a unique way of making friends wherever they go. And for Louis, a Mini Bull Terrier, a trip to the farm turned into quite the social occasion when he met a friendly flock of sheep.

And it wasn’t just Louis who seemed to think he’d found his people. The sheep were equally enamored with their new little friend. It’s the kind of instant connection you hope to find in life, just in animal form, and it might be one of the sweetest things you’ll see all week.

As Louis’ parent joked, “Lamb Terrier” sounds about right. Louis sniffed the sheep, the sheep sniffed him, and before long, he looked like an honorary member of the flock.

Apparently, Louis thought so, too. His family shared that when it was time to leave, they practically had to drag him home because he wanted to stay with the sheep. Just like a kid having the best playdate ever, he wasn’t ready for it to end.

Louis’s affection for farm animals doesn’t stop with sheep. This little Bull Terrier was just as thrilled as he got the chance to meet some cows.

According to the American Kennel Club, dogs tend to form the strongest cross-species bonds when they’re raised around another animal early on, and some researchers even point to specific genes tied to what’s been called “indiscriminate friendliness” in dogs. It’s the same principle used to train Livestock Guardian Dogs, who are placed with the animals they’ll one day protect from puppyhood, so the bond forms naturally over time. Whatever sparked Louis’ instant love for the flock, that kind of connection seems to be baked in from the start.

Apparently, Louis has yet to meet a farm animal he doesn’t want to befriend. And considering how quickly the sheep welcomed him into their flock, the feeling seems to be mutual.

Dogs in shelters long for a second chance at happiness. Waiting for days, weeks, sometimes years, these canines hope to be chosen for a true forever home. When given the chance to be part of a family, these fur babies spend the rest of their lives showing love and gratitude for their new start.

In the TikTok from @humanebroward, Marigold was in her kennel with a sweet and expectant look on her face. Marigold’s tail never stopped wagging when the shelter staff member shared the wonderful news of her adoption.

“She was VERY excited when she found out she was going home for good!” the caption read. “We couldn’t be happier for this sweet girl and her new family!”

Marigold couldn’t get to her new family members fast enough and practically flew down the hall to meet them. The expression of pure joy radiated from the precious pooch’s face as she was greeted with smiles and loving hugs.

When it was time for Marigold’s “freedom ride,” the canine cutie literally leapt into the car to go to her new home. She knew she was finally part of a family.

Marigold’s first few years of life were difficult. She endured mistreatment and neglect before arriving at the Broward County shelter, yet never lost her loving spirit.

“This adorable 3-year-old came to us after being overlooked at a rural shelter and spending much of her life being used for breeding,” the story continued. “Through it all, Marigold never stopped being gentle, loving, and full of joy.”

Having a litter of puppies sounds like a task fit for someone much more patient than I. I typically get one puppy at a time, as most people do, and even that is almost too much for me. My last puppy was so demanding that I could hardly breathe half the time!

One woman has a whole litter of Boxer puppies right now, though, and she has to find a way to transport them. Puppies go out several times before they make their way to their forever homes, though they typically do not roll up quite like this:

Birdie and Rooster just recently had this litter of puppies, and they’re everything they were hoping for and then some. There are 8 puppies in the litter, and their human wanted to make sure they got to experience the outside world before they begin making their way to their forever homes.

In this video, they’re going out for a walk. Trying to walk 8 puppies would be a disaster no matter what, but it could also be dangerous for puppies this young. So, she cut 8 holes out of a storage tote, sanded down the edges so that they would be safe, and put the puppies in a wagon.

That way, they get to go outside and get exposure to that kind of stimulation, but they’re not at risk of contracting anything they’re not fully vaccinated against yet. When they’re inside with their parents, they’re playing like their lives depend on it:

You may be wondering how one cares for guinea pig babies, especially when they are this small and young.

One thing to know is that, though these guinea pig babies were just born, they already have their fur and teeth and are quite mobile.

For their diet, hay should be a staple for these little ones, as it helps with their digestion and teeth.

These babies also must always have fresh water to stay hydrated.

Moderate their weight and behavior to ensure the pups are growing and developing at a healthy rate.

There are dogs, and then there are tiny dogs who are completely convinced they are human babies and should be treated accordingly. I happen to be extremely susceptible to the second variety. Put a six-pound dog in a sweater or carry her around like an infant, and suddenly I’m reconsidering every decision I’ve ever made about the number of pets I need.

May May the Yorkshire Terrier has taken this one step further because she apparently has a designated high chair for meals. And don’t even think about putting her food somewhere else. In an adorable clip, the tiny puppy stands in front of her chair barking while her mom asks if she wants to get into it to eat. May May’s answer is basically, “Why are we still discussing this?”

May May’s mom keeps asking whether she wants to go into her chair while this tiny ball of fur becomes increasingly vocal about the fact that YES, THAT IS WHY SHE IS STANDING HERE.

People in the comments completely understood.

“Yorkies are so smart,” one person wrote.

“They always get what they want,” added another.

Someone perfectly translated May May’s barking: “She wants to know ‘why are you taking so long and asking me the same question?!’ 😂 Hurry up mom.”

Another Yorkie parent could relate, explaining that their dog announces when it’s bedtime and throws a tantrum if they don’t immediately get up and go.

I want a Yorkie so badly.

The only slight issue is that I have cats, including Meatball, my Maine Coon, who would probably accidentally sit on it.

Yorkshire Terriers may come in an extremely tiny package, but nobody seems to have informed them of this. They’re known for being intelligent, affectionate, and full of personality, and May May is giving us a pretty good demonstration of that last one.

Their small size can make them appealing if you don’t have room for a large dog, but don’t confuse “small” with “requires nothing.” Yorkies still need exercise, attention, grooming, training, and plenty of mental stimulation.

And judging by May May, you should also be prepared for opinions.

Golden Retrievers love water more than anyone I know. I really don’t like water very much at all, which is why I don’t think a Golden Retriever would be a great fit for me. I want them all to experience life to the fullest!

Leonardo the Golden Retriever is the most Golden Retriever-like Golden Retriever I’ve ever seen in my life. He didn’t understand the whole thing: the sand felt a little weird, and he loved looking at the ocean… But he had no idea it would move.

When the ocean pulled away from the shore a little bit, he was having a lot of fun rolling in the sand. Then, when it came back, he was beside himself! It almost swept him out to sea! He was so confused, he could hardly believe it!

Once he figured out the whole beach thing, though, he was in love. He really liked to swim, and his mom even got him a special life jacket. He looks like a little shark in the water:

I love everything about this: his swimming, the way he looks like a shark, and most importantly, the fact that they’re making sure he’s safe!

Golden Retrievers are super strong natural swimmers. That’s what they were bred for, and as long as you make sure they’re exposed to water, they’ll hone their skills and become super strong swimmers.

Golden Retrievers don’t technically always need to wear a life jacket. If they’re just swimming around in a pool or a lake under supervision, they’ll be okay without one, especially if they’re older. However, you should always have a life jacket on your Golden Retriever when you’re:

• Boating.
• Paddleboarding.
• Kayaking.
• Swimming in a body of water with a strong current.

It’s just an abundance of caution. You never know what can happen, and it takes just a second for something to go wrong. Luckily, Leonardo was prepared!

In the TikTok from @lizzyoconnell, an adorable chocolate Labrador waited outside his neighbor’s door with an expectant look on his face. Apparently, he wanted some play time with the Husky mix who resided in the home.

“The new neighbor’s dog has been coming over every day and asking my dog to play,” the on-screen text explained.

The Lab patiently waited until his pooch pal came outside. After a few routine sniffs to greet each other, the canine cuties sprang into action. The Labrador grabbed a huge stick for whatever game they were about to play, and his Husky BFF trotted right along after him, ready for some fun. The two fur babies clearly had a bond and were enjoying a very close friendship.

Southern Pine Danes typically specializes in Great Danes, but they’ve recently started dipping into Great Danoodles. The one in this video is Perdita, but there are a couple of other puppies from her litter. They’re 10 weeks old now, which means they’ll be off to their forever homes shortly!

Great Danes tend to have large litters, so there are a ton of fluffy puppies roaming around the yard, waiting to go home. Their current caretaker hasn’t said whether she’s planning on keeping any of the puppies, but I hope she keeps at least one!

To get to the bottom of it, we spoke with a dog training specialist, who shared exactly what to look for in a harness built for low-light walks, along with a few of her go-to recommendations.

Whether you’re dealing with unlit streets, foggy mornings or just want extra reassurance, here’s what trainers want you to know about the safest dog harness for night walking and how to keep your dog visible and secure after dark.

While it’s easier to grab your everyday leash and collar for your evening walk, it might not be the safest choice for your dog. Molly Jesperson, a training specialist for Camp Bow Wow, notes that standard leashes and collars are made with daytime in mind, when pet parents can easily spot cyclists, other animals, drivers, and wildlife while out and about with their dog. Not built for the dark, these leashes and collars don’t have enough (or any) reflective material to make your dog visible when there’s low visibility.

Unlike dog harnesses, leashes and collars also offer less control over your dog, making it easy to lose your grip on your dog’s leash if they were to lunge or run away. Although it’s not hard to see why you may just think to grab your everyday dog accessories and be ready for your night walk, the easiest choice isn’t always the safest for our pups.

Before you comb through all the dog harnesses on the market, Jesperson points out there are a few features to look for to ensure you have the safest option for your dog.

No matter what special features a dog harness touts, Jesperson highlights that the most important element to look out for is a harness with 360-degree visibility. Not all harnesses are made the same, and some may come with reflective blind spots that leave your dog invisible from certain angles. Remove any potential for disaster and opt for a harness with reflective material all around.

Since being visible is the priority, you also want to ensure you are getting the right kind of visibility. Some harnesses are made with reflective material woven into the harness, which only works when light reflects off it. Harnesses with LED lights integrated work at all times, so long as the battery is working. These harnesses are best when walking through areas with no external light.

When picking out harnesses with LED lights or reflective material, you want to ensure that the harness works in all conditions, including rain or fog. Waterproof and weather-resistant designs will keep your dog safe, no matter the conditions.

Even the best dog harnesses fail, and that’s why it’s important to have a backup in place. Jesperson points out that the Ruffwear Beacon light can clip onto your existing gear to ensure you have visibility at all times. With a stellar waterproof rating and a rechargeable battery, you never need to worry about a lighting element failing in the middle of your walk.
