I've always thought my Pug mix looks like baby Simba from The Lion King. He has the same honey-hued coloring, muscular (albeit a bit fleshier) build, and sassy personality as the spunky lion cub, making him a mirror image of the famous Disney character.

Squid the black cat also seems to have an iconic twin from the silver screen that starred in a beloved animated trilogy.

The TikTok from @mrecob13 featured a close-up of Squid as she stared into the camera with her yellow-green eyes wide open. Her mouth formed a sort of smile/sneer combo, where her teeth looked like fangs. Squid's face morphed into dramatic expressions that could easily make movie magic.

The pretty kitty was a dead ringer for Toothless from the 2010 hit film, How to Train Your Dragon. Toothless the black dragon stole the show with his loyalty to Hiccup, the Viking who found him. The movie launched a franchise with two sequels, with fans falling in love with the basilisk beauty who had a heart of gold.

Followers posted pictures of Toothless in the comments to show the similarities and raved over the feline fur baby's unique look.

At this point in my life, I've probably seen more cats than anyone else on the planet. I just feel like I'm always seeing them, and to be honest, it's pretty hard to impress me with cats anymore. It takes one really special kitty!

In this video, Pebbles the Chimera Ragdoll is getting a massage, which is a perfect opportunity to get a close-up view of her face. She's perfectly split down the middle, and there are polka dots on either side of her face, along with matching ones on her paws.

Pebbles is almost 6 years old, though from some angles, she still looks like a kitten. She has huge blue eyes and a patchwork coat that legitimately looks like a living work of art. The first time I saw her, I didn't even think she was real!

Look at that girl! She's so stunning! She's super playful, too. She loves getting pampered and then making Mom play with her, and she always gets her way. No one on the planet could ever say no to that face.

Chimera Cats Are Super Rare

A true Chimera cat is hard to come by. Some breeders may use it as a marketing tactic, and shelters might have it listed for certain cats, but true Chimerism is rare.

Chimerism occurs when two fertilized embryos fuse together, essentially fusing two cats into one cat. This happens early on in the pregnancy, and though there are some signs that your cat might be a Chimera, the only way to confirm is through genetic testing.

Pebbles was tested, and all of the signs are there for her, too. She has:

• A matching split down her back.
• Opposite colored spots on either half of her face.
• Different colored paws.

While British Shorthairs are affectionate cats, they often prefer closeness without constant handling, choosing to stay nearby rather than being held or carried.

“One other surprising reality is that many British Shorthairs don’t love being picked up or carried around,” she continues. “They’re sturdy cats, and some tolerate handling well, but many prefer to keep all four paws on the ground.”

For many new pet parents, this becomes part of their charm as the breed’s quiet companionship is expressed more through presence than physical clinginess, reinforcing their unique British Shorthair personality.

They Love Company, but on Their Own Terms

One sweet thing you should know before getting a British Shorthair is that they are devoted companions, but they prefer to call the shots.

“British Shorthairs tend to be independent and self-possessed,” Wooten explains. “They may enjoy being near their people, but they often want control over when and how interaction happens.”

That independence shouldn’t be mistaken for aloofness, though. “British Shorthairs are loyal, devoted companions who are affectionate in an undemanding way,” says Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director of Ferndale Kennels and Travel Pet Relocation Services.

Instead of constantly seeking attention, these indoor cats often happiest relaxing nearby and keeping you company. “It’s a very understated, British type of love,” Murdoch adds.

They’re Surprisingly Low-Drama

When it comes to British Shorthair characteristics, vets say people are shocked to learn they are pretty calm cats! Therefore, if you've lived with a highly energetic cat that treats your home like a personal obstacle course, a British Shorthair may come as a welcome surprise.

“They’re often less frantic or mischievous than some more high-energy breeds,” Wooten says. “This can surprise people who are used to cats that climb curtains, knock everything off shelves or need constant entertainment to stay out of trouble.”

One of the most appealing British Shorthair traits is their calm, easygoing temperament. While they still enjoy playtime, they're generally content to relax near their favorite people and aren't known for causing household chaos. For many first-time owners, this laidback nature is one reason British Shorthairs are considered such good pets and a great fit for quieter homes.

They Can Be Playful

One aspect of British Shorthair behavior that surprises many new pet parents is that they have a playful side. In fact, because British Shorthairs are so relaxed, it’s easy for owners to assume they don’t need much stimulation. However, experts say they need regular opportunities to exercise both their minds and bodies.

“They still benefit from daily interactive play, puzzle feeders, climbing spaces, scratching posts and environmental enrichment,” Wooten explains. “A quiet cat isn't the same thing as a cat who doesn’t need engagement.”

Providing enrichment activities can also help prevent boredom-related behaviors, such as scratching furniture.

They Tend to Gain Weight Easily

Did you know British Shorthair cats can easily gain weight if their routine isn’t managed carefully? It's true! Though sine their naturally round, stocky build can make it tricky for owners to notice small changes over time, especially because they tend to look cute and cuddly even when they’ve put on a few extra pounds.

“Portion control, regular play and routine veterinary weight checks are important so ‘chonky and cute’ doesn’t become a health problem,” Wooten states.

Murdoch agrees and adds, “As a vet, I feel their weight gain is one of the biggest health issues to watch,” he explains. “This breed is fairly relaxed and inactive. In turn, this makes them more likely to gain weight compared to other cat breeds.”

Their Coat Is Easier to Maintain Than It Looks

Don't let their fur fool you. While caring for their pretty coat is a big part of being their pet parent, it's not as hard to groom them as many people think. It just takes a little time commitment to keep them looking and feeling their best.

“While their plush coats are adorable, they need help removing loose hair because their coat is dense," Wooten shares. "Their coat benefits from regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons."

They Take Time to Warm Up to New People

British Shorthairs are often deeply affectionate with their families, but they may take a little longer to warm up to new people, which many cat lovers may not realize.

“This can surprise owners who expect an outgoing, social cat based on the breed’s sweet expression,” Wooten says. “Many British Shorthairs prefer to observe first and interact later once they feel comfortable.”

Rather than being unfriendly, this reserved nature is simply part of their personality. They tend to build trust slowly, choosing familiarity and routine over instant connection.

“A British Shorthair’s personality will also be shaped by genetics, early socialization, health, environment and how respectfully people interact with them,” Wooten concludes.

For many cat parents, this slower approach to bonding is part of what makes the relationship feel so rewarding once trust is earned.

As an orange Maine Coon mom myself, I completely understand this level of affection. My giant orange boy Meatball weighs approximately one million pounds when he decides it's cuddle time. And once they're in a loving mood, there is no leaving. There is no getting up. There is only accepting your fate.

Maine Coons are aggressively affectionate.

It's basically like being loved by a lion.

The Cat Gave Birth to Five Kittens, but Her Dad Counted Six

Kathy Price has spent years taking in stray cats. In the video, she talked about her house cat. Two months before she gave birth to five kittens, Kathy heard meowing outside her door. She opened the door and found a tortoiseshell cat running straight into the house.

Her cat gave birth on Memorial Day. She brought three orange kittens and two gray kittens into the world. One day, Kathy's husband asked how many kittens there were. She replied, "Five," to which he said, "I counted six."

The Surprise Hiding in the Litter

When the family checked the litter, they noticed an extra baby nestled around the kittens. It was not another cat. It was a tiny wild bunny.

Nobody knows how the rabbit found his way into the nest. The family never saw him coming. What they saw was the mother's reaction.

Their house cat accepted him as if he was one of her own babies. She allowed him to stay among the kittens and cared for him alongside the rest of the litter.

Now, the family involves five kittens, one bunny, and one devoted cat mom.

Cats Are Better Mothers Than People Realize

Cats have strong maternal instincts, especially during the weeks following birth. Their nurturing behavior is at its peak. Sometimes, they would accept kittens from another litter.

As one fan commented, "Not surprising. My barn cat had a litter after she adopted me and I put an orphaned week-old puppy with the litter. She raised him with the kittens and they still sleep together eight years later."

Looking for New Homes

Kathy hopes to find homes for all of the kittens. She wants to find a great home for the mother cat, saying, "She's been through a tragedy. Having her home disrupted. But she deserves to have a secure place, with or without kittens and bunnies."

Right now, the kittens are not ready to move. Once they are big enough, the bunny will go on to live in the wild.

These cats deserve a home. One fan said, "What a beautiful sweet kittie. I so hope she, her kittens, and the baby bunny all get adopted to good homes."

This dog mom adopted her rescue German shepherd in February, and in a Reddit post on r/germanshepherds, she confessed that things were rough at first.

She was in both physical and emotional pain. Then, she started obedience and rally classes, and slowly but surely something changed. It took time, but now she has a perfect companion by her side.

Four months later, her German shepherd sits quietly by her side while other dogs bark at him on the trail. They even went camping together.

The challenge with rescue dogs is that many families skip the step of letting the dog decompress. They want to go from "we adopted him" to heartwarming photos in a day. In reality, things do not happen that way.

This dog mom stuck it out. She didn't send him back, even though the thought had crossed her mind. She searched for help and trusted the process.

Understanding the 3-3-3 Rule

Adoption shelters often emphasize the 3-3-3 rule. While some dogs take longer to calm down and settle into their new forever home, most of the time, the 3-3-3 holds true.

Simply put, the rule emphasizes that shelter dogs remain in survival mode for the first three days, then they learn the routine in the first three weeks, and build trust in the first three months.

In the first few days after moving to a new home, the dog finds themselves in unfamiliar territory. They meet new people and experience new smells, routines and sounds. Naturally, they can feel anxious, withdrawn and even reactive. They need those first three days to understand that they are safe.

Within the first three weeks, dogs begin to learn new routines: when they eat dinner, where they can sleep, how to get familiar with their new mom and dad, and how to earn rewards. During this period, dogs begin to show their true personalities as they feel more comfortable.

Transformation happens within three months, when the dog starts to feel at home. They become more confident and happily participate in training.

The dog mom on Reddit said her dog is an angel now, and puts it plainly for all future adopters, "The 3-3-3 rule really is accurate. Give it time. Get a trainer. The tears I shed in the end are worth it."

Rescue Parents Know the Feeling

Many fans recognized the feeling of adopting a dog and then having their personality come out. It is all worth it in the end. One person said, "The effort you put into him comes back x1000. Best friend you'll ever have. Rescues just know and they show it to their person."

The lesson here is that the dogs we see today are not the dogs they were. This dog mom said she suspects her dog might have been abused before.

The hilarious clip was shared by the TikTok account for @Safari_davis and documents what can only be described as a traumatic event involving two White Faced Whistling Ducks named Beaker and Bunsen.

According to the caption, "The Incident" occurred on March 19, 2026, inside the Cincinnati Zoo's butterfly aviary. There were two witnesses. The victims were Beaker and Bunsen. And zoo staff were not entirely convinced either duck would ever emotionally recover.

The video itself is absolutely adorable. As butterflies flutter nearby, the two little ducks react with the kind of panic usually reserved for home invasions and surprise tax audits.

I laughed because I know several people who would have reacted exactly the same way.

In my mind, these butterflies know exactly what they're doing. They just spend their days floating around the aviary wreaking psychological havoc on innocent duckies.

Why Some Cats Become Protective of Babies

Though cats are often thought to be standoffish and aloof, they can actually be very maternal, as we see here with the kitty closely watching over the baby.

Cats have a strong instinct to protect their own young, and this can apply to other vulnerable animals, like a human baby.

Another reason cats may be drawn to babies is that kitties do form deep social bonds with humans.

This female feline is already clearly very close with her mother, and now that her mom has a baby, the cat is drawn to the small, new human.

From the minute the newborn comes home, the cat can feel very protective of this new baby and stay close with a watchful eye, including during middle-of-the-night feedings.

On June 3, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed the first case of the New World screwworm in the United States in more than 50 years.

The parasite, which targets mainly farm animals, hasn't been much of a concern among pet parents, but with the USDA confirming the first case in a family dog on Monday, June 8, that might change.

The United States eliminated the screwworm in 1966 following one of the most ambitious sterile insect programs in history.

Sadly, it is back now.

This Isn't An Ordinary Parasite

There is a difference between this parasite and the most commonly known among pet parents. Called New World screwworm, unlike many fly larvae that feed on dead tissue, this one feeds on living flesh.

Adult female flies lay eggs in open wounds, cuts or surgical sites. After hatching, these parasites burrow deeper into the animal's healthy tissue to feed.

That makes the screwworm one of the most serious livestock and animal health threats in the United States.

A Single Dog Case Is Getting National Attention

The recent case involved a dog in Lea County, N.M.

According to the official statement, the dog recently visited Texas before the infestation was discovered. The USDA says the dog is currently recovering, and surveillance teams have visited the site to check for additional cases nearby.

So far, this sounds like an isolated case. Still, that doesn't mean you shouldn't remain vigilant.

A parasitic fly does not respect state lines. It took years to spread from Panama through seven countries before finally reaching Texas and New Mexico. Nobody can say for sure where the spread of the New World screwworm will end.

Most People Don't Understand How Serious This Is

The screwworm does not distinguish between livestock and pets. They can reach cattle and family dogs simultaneously.

The infestation can go from invisible to severe within 48 hours. By the time most pet parents notice something is wrong, the wound can be worse than it appears.

How to Keep Your Dog Safe

If you own a dog in New Mexico, Texas, or anywhere near the U.S.-Mexico border, you should pay even closer attention to the situation.

Start by keeping your dog's open wounds clean and covered. If you notice visible maggots around the wound, a foul or unusually strong odor from the wound, or unexplained bleeding, immediately call your vet.

Dogs may also show loss of appetite and separate themselves from other animals or their pet parents.

Right now, awareness is the best defense. The good news is that the dog in New Mexico will recover, and officials consider it an isolated case.

And while many pet parents might never encounter screwworm, understanding the parasite and how it spreads can make the difference.

Early detection can save your dog's life.

How to Keep Dogs Safe in Open Water

It doesn't matter how good your dogs are at swimming. Open water can be extremely unpredictable, so it's important to take safety precautions when enjoying a day at the beach or the lake with your canine BFFs.

But how? According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the best way to ensure their safety is by making sure that your dog is wearing a life jacket that fits properly anytime they're in or near the open water, including when they're out on a boat.

It's also non-negotiable to always keep an eye on your dog when you're near water. Things can go wrong in a split second, so making sure they're supervised is key. Not just to ensure that they don't drown, but also to watch for signs that they might be getting sleepy, which would be a good time to cut off the water fun for the day.

Before heading out, you'll also want to make sure that your dog isn't too freaked out by bodies of water. If they stay calm, there's a better chance they'll stay safe, so introduce them to the water slowly if they aren't into it at first, being sure to go at their pace.

Golden Retrievers are generally such easygoing dogs, but they've been known to throw a fit from time to time when things don't go their way like any other canine. They can't always understand why they can't have what they want right this second. Doesn't the world revolve around them?!

The Golden Retriever in the video below, whose name is Charlie, seemed to be having those kind of big feelings when he realized that the café he likes to visit in the mornings wasn't open yet. Someone as cute as Charlie has to wait? No wonder he immediately began throwing a tantrum...

Charlie's mom, Lauren, shared this footage on TikTok on June 8, and he might be the most disappointed dog I've ever seen.

Just watch the way he stops at the locked door and then looks back at his mom as if this must be part of some big misunderstanding. If you've ever wondered if a dog can actually stomp their paws out of impatience, wonder no more, because Charlie has perfected this particular art.

It's okay, Charlie. I know how you feel. Sometimes, my kids get up way too early and Starbucks isn't even open yet. It's quite a bummer!

Fortunately, his disappointment also meant that he got to be extra excited when two minutes had passed and the café was finally open. That must have felt like forever to him!

Why Dogs Get So Attached to Routines

If you've noticed that your dog does better when they're on a predictable routine, you're not the only one! Many dogs thrive on routine since they know what to expect day after day and will come to depend on the different elements of their routine just like Charlie and his favorite café.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), routines are key in training your dog, and in ensuring that they (and you) have as peaceful a day as possible.

When you do things with them at the same time every day — like serving meals, taking walks, and going to bed — they learn to associate those activities with the time of day, even though they can't read a clock.

Speaking of a dog's sense of time, it's all based on their ability to recognize patterns, which don't exist without a routine, as Rover points out. They also depend on their inner circadian rhythm the same way that humans do; it helps regulate their sleep and awake times on a daily basis.

This means that if you're late to offer them dinner, they will never let you live it down. I don't know Charlie that well, but I feel like this would be an especially grievous offense to him after seeing just how much he cares about that café.

On Monday at 7:37 in the morning local time, as children were getting ready for school, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines.

It resulted in at least 35 casualties, hundreds of injured people, 10,000 families displaced, and buildings crumbling across General Santos City on the island of Mindanao. In Glan, located in the province of Sarangani, a landslide buried 13 villagers. Meanwhile, flights were canceled at General Santos International Airport after sustaining structural damage.

As rescue teams aided those in need, a dog was crying for help somewhere among the rubble.

What a 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Does To a City

The earthquake's epicenter was located 32 kilometers southwest of the town of Maasim on Mindanao, the second-most populous island in the Philippine archipelago.

Rescue teams pulled people from collapsed low-rise buildings across General Santos City. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. canceled classes and ordered disaster agencies to act quickly. "The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind," he promised.

In the middle of all that, a group of men heard a dog.

"Thank You, Mga Kuya"

The pup was buried among the debris, crying and frightened that he might not make it out alive. The men had sirens around them, rubble everywhere and human casualties to reach.

Nobody would blame them for moving on, but they stopped anyway.

They worked through the debris piece by piece until they reached the dog. When they finally pulled him out, he was shaken but alive.

Naturally, the rescue effort was posted on Facebook by the Bataan Animal Welfare Society, where it spread.

The post ended with: "Thank you mga Kuya." In Tagalog, "mga kuya" translates to "older brother," and can be used to show respect to any male relative or any older man.

They Didn't Keep Walking

When you hear your dog whine in the next room, you quickly spring into action without having given it much thought.

In the case of these rescuers, they heard a dog's cries for help coming from a collapsed building. Considering the circumstances and the many people who needed rescuing after the earthquake, you couldn't have faulted them for moving on.

Still, they stopped and saved another life that day. The dog is alive thanks to the kindness of strangers.

Some puppies seem determined to spread joy no matter what life throws at them.

And one tiny Golden Retriever named Hope is proving that happiness apparently comes with unlimited tail wags.

The heartwarming video was shared by @babybubbaboyy, and it introduces viewers to Hope, an adorable Golden Retriever puppy who has already overcome more challenges than most dogs will face in a lifetime.

According to Hope's GoFundMe page, the little puppy was born not breathing and had to receive CPR before being rushed to the veterinarian for oxygen. Because her family wasn't sure she would survive, they gave her the perfect name: Hope.

Thankfully, the tiny fighter pulled through.

Later, complications from an infection and damage to one of her paws meant Hope needed surgery to amputate her leg. Her family recently shared the wonderful news that Hope successfully had her surgery and is now focusing on healing and recovery.

You'd never know this little girl has been through so much.

Even after everything, Hope continues to play, cuddle, wag her tail, and enjoy life like puppies do best. Dogs really are amazing that way.

The comments section quickly filled with love for the sweet tripod pup.

"Could she BE any more precious?!" one viewer wrote.

"Awww. Bless her happy little heart," another person commented.

One fellow tripod dog parent shared, "She's the best, and I know. I have my own little tripod pup."
