My dad always says, “Good things come in small packages.”

He said this to my sister, who is 5 feet tall on her best day, but this logic also applies to cats, especially an adorable cat named Meemers.

Meemers, a Black Cat, has a rare inherited genetic syndrome called short spine syndrome, or SSS, which causes the vertebrae to develop abnormally.

Though this SSS cat may be only 7.5 inches long, she has so much love to give, and people can’t get enough of her!

From her shoulders to the base of her tail, Meemers is only about seven-and-a-half inches long, her owner Katie Dahlen tells . But she’s got a whole lot of love to give! “She was actually left at the shelter in a box outside,” owner Katie Dahlen told of the shelter at which she was working at the time. “Literally, from the day she came in, I was like, ‘She needs to come home with me.’” ❤️ 🎥: shortspine_meemers / Instagram

What Is Short Spine Syndrome in Cats?

So what is short spine syndrome in cats, and how common is it?

Short spine syndrome in cats, or SSS, is a rare and inherited condition that impacts the vertebrae of stump-tailed or tailless cats, according to Catster.

SSS is the same genetic mutation that makes a Manx cat’s tail shorter than a normal kitty’s.

In addition to having a compressed spine, SSS cats can also have problems with their back legs, including paralysis, incontinence issues, and a lack of perianal and urethral sensation.

As you can imagine, depending on the severity of the condition and the issues that come with it, this can be a very difficult life for a kitty and impact their quality of life significantly.

There’s no cure for short spine syndrome cats, so it really comes down to ensuring these animals have proper hygiene, bladder control, and movement support, as well as dedicated veterinary care to make their lives better.

Meemers looks like her quality of life is quite good.

Considering she was left at a shelter in a box when her now-mom, Katie Dahlen, adopted her, she’s one lucky cat.

All 7.5 inches of her!

I’ve always had a soft spot for rescue animals who discover something simple and wonderful after a life that hasn’t been very kind to them. Watching Dolly, the Cockatoo, outside in the sunshine with her little sweater and bare chicken legs absolutely got me.

Dolly is missing a lot of feathers, so she already has a look that makes you want to scoop her up and protect her from everything. But this outing isn’t really about what she’s missing.

It’s about what she’s gaining.

Her human, who saved her, took her outside for a couple of hours, and Dolly apparently loved nearly every second of it. Sunshine? Huge fan. Fresh air? Absolutely. Grass touching those naked little legs?

Hard no.

The little sweater somehow makes the whole scene even more tender. Dolly looks like she’s dressed for a very important garden appointment, only to discover nobody warned her that the ground itself would be touching her feet.

I laughed watching her carefully negotiate that part. Even after everything she’s been through, Dolly is beginning to have preferences, and that may be the sweetest part of this whole story.

Her human says Dolly has also started talking more. Her voice is still quiet and shy, but hearing her use it is a big deal considering what another post revealed about her past.

Dolly spent decades experiencing neglect and mistreatment. When she first arrived, she was extremely compliant, allowing her caregiver to do nearly anything without protest. Her human believes some of that wasn’t simply sweetness. Dolly had learned that resisting didn’t change what happened to her.

That makes every tiny opinion feel enormous.

Her caregiver has even said she looks forward to the day Dolly becomes a little naughty: saying no, pushing boundaries, and acting like the wonderfully dramatic Cockatoo she was always supposed to be.

I love that way of looking at healing.

One commenter from Australia described seeing huge groups of wild Cockatoos flying overhead every day and said Dolly’s story managed to break and warm their heart simultaneously. I understand that completely.

Seeing her bare legs is hard. Hearing that tiny voice is not.

That voice means Dolly has something to say.

And finally, she’s learning that somebody wants to hear it.

Blue is the happiest, friendliest kitty now that he’s with a family who seems to be able to care for him, and that’s such a wonderful thing. If you’re welcoming a new cat into your life, having some tips handy to help make that transition as calm as possible will benefit everyone in the family. 

According to Paws.org, adjusting to a new home can be really stressful and tense for cats, and having understanding and patience while they acclimate is really important. They explain that when you bring your new kitty home, the best first step is to set up a space just for them with everything they need. That helps them get used to the new sounds and smells. 

Don’t overwhelm your cat with attention, Paws.org explains. The site also adds that it’s important to spend time with your kitty so they can get used to you, too, just like the house, but to always do that on your pet’s terms.

Slow and steady is going to win this race, and you’ll have the happiest, cuddliest cat you get to call a part of your family.  

Every once in a while, I see a dog breed I’ve somehow managed to miss, and suddenly I need to know everything about it. That’s exactly what happened when I saw Swindle, an absolutely adorable Swedish Vallhund puppy who looks a little bit like someone combined a German Shepherd with a Corgi and then shrunk the whole situation.

Swindle doesn’t even have to do much to win you over. In the clip, she’s simply sitting in the aisle of a pet supply store when she lifts one tiny paw and gives the sweetest little wave. As if that weren’t enough, her tongue is sticking out at the same time. I don’t know how anyone is supposed to resist this.

The cute clip was shared by the TikTok account @swedishswindle, where people were understandably losing their minds over Swindle.

“I know she’s a Vallhund, but I can’t get over the fact they look like a Shepherd Corgi,” one person commented.

Swedish Vallhunds may look like tiny Shepherd Corgis, but they’re actually an old Swedish breed with a history as working farm dogs and cattle herders.

Bernedoodle puppies are my weakness. I’ve always been firmly in the “I don’t want a Doodle” camp, but if there’s any Doodle who could make me break, it’s the Bernedoodle. They’re just too cute and sweet, I can’t resist! Luckily, I have too many dogs already.

Some of the Bernedoodles from Rocky Doodles are a little “cheesier” than others. While a few of them just have a light layer of orange fur near their paws, others look straight-up cheddar-blasted. The lighter puppies in particular seem to have more orange in their coats.

This litter is from a female named Buttercup, who gave birth to 7 stunning pups. They don’t say how many are boys and how many are girls, but we can see that there’s a pretty even mix of Merle Bernedoodle pups and standard ones. Every single one, however, is adorable!

In the TikTok from @camitha.spamitha, Rascal lay in bed looking very calm and relaxed. His eyes were a bit droopy, almost like he just woke up, and he had a very content expression on his face — for a specific reason.

“Woke up to my cat eating 20 Churus,” the on-screen text explained, with the caption adding, “No wonder he’s so happy right now.”

Churus are purée snacks for cats that come in squeezable tubes, which Rascal’s mom keeps in stock at home. The camera panned over the bedroom floor to show numerous Churu wrappers strewn about the room. Rascal had obviously broken into his mom’s stash of the savory treats and decided to help himself to as many as he wanted. While many would feel a bit overstuffed after such an impressive binge, Rascal appeared to feel just fine.

Followers were extremely amused and somewhat impressed by the scene, and posted some comical comments:

Update on Rascal’s Condition Post-Churu Binge

Rascal’s video racked up over 11 million views, with some people concerned about his condition after his all-out gluttony. The pretty kitty’s mom assured everyone that she took Rascal to the vet, where he received a clean bill of health. She’s monitoring him each day, but reported that he’s doing fine.

“For some reason, the 20 Churus did not impact him,” Rascal’s mom said as she held him on her lap. “The biggest thing that I’ve noticed after his ‘incident’ is that he’s much more affectionate than usual.”

The feline fur baby’s mother took full responsibility for having the Churus within reach and revealed that Rascal had never done this in the six years she’s had him. She isn’t mad or upset with Rascal, though they will be on a break from Churus for a bit.

“He’s on Churu probation for a while,” the feline fur baby’s mom said, “but I will bring them back into our house.”

Bubba the Brown Ragdoll is one of the best brown Ragdolls I’ve ever seen in my life. He has a tiny bit of white on his chest, which makes him look like a marshmallow that got put under a chocolate fountain or something. He’s only a few months old, but he’s already winning so many hearts!

Bubba got to his forever home early last month. He has a sister there, who he loves antagonizing, and he’s getting really good at hiding behind stuff and jumping out. Kittens are crazy! Being a chocolate-covered kitten certainly doesn’t change that!

Bubba’s brown fur is great. Everybody loves chocolate, and therefore, cats who look like chocolate. My favorite part about this kitty, though, is his hairy toes. You can really see them when he’s sleeping on his back:

Are Brown Ragdolls Different?

If you’ve ever heard of Ragdoll cats before, you know they’re typically white, with smaller patches of other colors sometimes. For the most part, though, they look like little snowballs.

In the TikTok video shared by Coco’s foster mom @mydogbodhi, the precious baby kitty began her journey in the palm of Mom’s hand—literally! Coco was only 5 days old when she was found in an abandoned barn with her kitty sister, Lily. At half the size, she developed fading kitten syndrome, which is a collection of dangerous symptoms that can be deadly if not treated properly.

The impossibly, irresistibly small kitten, with a larger head than body, was slow to grow and had no interest in eating. Even with short limbs and looking a little “chubby,” Coco wasn’t growing in length.

Thankfully, this cute kitten wasn’t done fighting, and with the help of UC Davis, Mom got the answers she needed to make sure Coco could thrive.

Tests concluded that little Coco has hypothyroidism, which can affect growth and development in cats. After 12 weeks of bottle feeding and 4 weeks of treatment, she began eating on her own and developed the spunk and energy kittens are known for.

She’s even showing the new recruits how great life can be!

Hypothyroidism in Cats: Symptoms and Treatment 

Hypothyroidism in cats is a rare condition that happens when an underactive thyroid gland doesn’t produce the hormones needed to regulate metabolism. It’s usually seen in adult cats, but can also be caused by a congenital birth defect in kittens.

Signs in kittens like Coco include disproportionate growth (short limbs and a bigger head), delayed mental response or appearing sluggish, and retained baby teeth. In adult cats, it looks more like weight gain, lethargy, constipation, slow heart rate, low coat quality (losing its sheen), and cold intolerance, which are things humans might experience with the condition, too.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and how severe it is, but might include:

• Synthetic hormones or supplementation to restore normal levels
• Blood work and regular follow-ups to monitor total T4 and TSH hormone levels
• Medication adjustments based on bloodwork results
• A modified diet to manage weight gain

If your dog could talk, they’d probably have plenty to say about their favorite treats or exactly when you should stop working and start tossing around the tennis ball. But since dogs don’t communicate with words, pet parents have to become pretty good at reading the room. That includes being able to tell when their dog is essentially smiling on the inside.

While every dog has their own personality and quirks, trainers say certain body language cues and behaviors can offer clues into your dog’s emotional state, including whether they feel safe, relaxed and genuinely feeling content.

But if you’re a new dog parent or you’re still trying to decoding your dog, how can you tell if your dog is happy and radiating joy? “I often tell people it can be helpful to think about a dog’s communication like that of a two-year-old child,” says Mike Gould, a police K9 expert and founder of Hounds Town USA. “A young child may not have the words to explain exactly how they’re feeling, but they communicate constantly through their behavior and body language.”

Dogs, he adds, express themselves in much the same way to give people indications about how they feel. So while not all dogs will not flash a human-style grin, there are plenty of happy dog signs that are basically a dog’s version of a smile. To learn what they are, here are seven telltale signs you cna look out for to know your dog is bursting with joy.

Their Body Is Relaxed and Loose

One of the easiest ways to spot a content dog is to look at their overall body language. After all, how dogs show happiness may not be what you think as it doesn’t always mean they are super excited or beaming ear-to-ear.

“What I generally like to see is softness,” says Chris Loverseed, head trainer of Positive K9 Training. “Their body isn’t braced. Their eyes and the face look easy, their movement is loose and their ears and tail are sitting normally for that particular dog.”

Of course, “normal” can look different from dog to dog. A floppy-eared Basset Hound won’t carry themselves the same way as a pointy-eared German Shepherd. The key, Loverseed says, is knowing what relaxed looks like for your dog to know if they are essentially glowing on the inside.

Their Ears are Relaxed

Is your dog secretly smiling at you? Experts reveal that your pup doesn’t need to show off their pearly whites to let you know they are happy, relaxed and thriving. Your dog’s ears can actually reveal plenty about how they’re doing instead. In fact, they can perk up when something captures their attention or shift backward when they’re uncertain.

When a dog is relaxed and content, their ears often simply rest in their natural position. This can vary by breed, as some dogs have naturally upright ears while others have floppy ones. Generally, relaxed ears aren’t tightly positioned in a way that suggests your dog is on high alert.

“The ears are not stiff or pressed against the head, but they hang or stand loosely,” explains Sally Grottini, JustAnswer dog behavior expert.

Their Eyes Have a Soft, Gentle Look

Does your dog have a happy face? Experts say these dog expressions can reveal when your pup is feeling their best.

According to Grottini, happy dogs often have “relaxed eyes with direct eye contact, a resting tongue where the tongue hangs out just a little over the teeth and a relaxed open mouth showing a smile.”

You may notice that soft expression after a good walk or a satisfying meal. However, it’s worth remembering that dogs don’t smile for the same reasons humans do. Still, when you see a loose body paired with soft eyes and a relaxed face, it’s a good sign your pup is feeling comfortable.

They Bring You a Favorite Toy

What does a happy dog actually look like? They are playful and there are few greater honors in dog ownership than being presented with a slobbery toy.

“The dog may carry a toy to you ready to play, or in some cases, to just relax beside you,” Grottini says.

Whatever the reason, voluntarily bringing you a favorite toy can be a sweet sign that your dog wants to interact with you or share an activity that they enjoy.

They Seek Closeness and Connection

Your dog’s version of a smile may show in how they react to being around you. So if your dog chooses to be by your side, it’s their way of letting you know they love you and you make them light up.

“This means the dog wants to be in the same room as you and, at times, sleep or sit at your feet, or rest its head on your lap,” Grottini says. “If the dog sleeps in the bed with you, they often want a part of their body touching yours.”

For many dogs, that closeness is a form of connection. These small moments can be especially meaningful because your dog is choosing to spend time near you. Sometimes, happiness can simply look like quietly snoozing next to someone you trust.

They Try to Give You Kisses

The little ways your dog says, “I’m happy” can be super adorable. For some dogs, joy comes in the form of gentle licks and enthusiastic face kisses.

“Some dogs will jump up on you as you walk through the door after a period of absence, such as a day at work,” Grottini says. “Their goal is to feel your touch and, if they’re large enough, give you kisses on your face. Shorter dogs will try licking your hands.”

That said, the biggest clue to your dog’s emotions may be something even simpler: knowing what’s typical for them.

“That normal baseline is probably the most useful thing a pet parent has,” Loverseed says. “If the dog suddenly stops enjoying food, play, walks or people, can’t settle, or starts looking stiff or sore, that’s a conversation to have with a vet rather than something I would label as a mood or training problem.”

Their Tail is Wagging Naturally

Even though your dog can’t tell you they’re in a good mood, they can show you. And while a tail wag is the first thing many people associate with that emotion, it’s important to pay attention to their entire body.

“People love a wagging tail, but you can have a wagging tail on a very stiff dog,” Loverseed explains. “A loose wag that moves through the hips, with the dog choosing to come over, is a completely different picture.”

In other words, pay attention to the whole dog, not just the tail. You might even get the full-body wiggle that makes it seem like your dog’s tail is wagging the rest of their body.

“Think of a two-year-old child jumping up and down or giggling when they’re excited,” Gould says. “Dogs also express their emotions physically, and that full-body enthusiasm can tell you a lot about what they’re feeling.”

Do Cats Actually Understand the Word ‘No?’

This video may leave viewers wondering if cats actually understand the word “no.” While they don’t understand it in the typical sense, they can pick up on the meaning in other ways, such as recognizing a stern tone of voice and learning to treat it as a stop signal.

Cats don’t process human language in the typical sense. They react to pitch, volume, and body language, so a sharp, firm tone tells them when you’re unhappy with them. With time and consistent training, a kitty learns that the sound “no” means their actions are about to be interrupted. Ultimately, though, cats have selective hearing. Even when they understand what you want, they’re independent animals and may choose to ignore a command if nothing motivates them to obey.

A simple “no” is likely to fail. A lack of context may make it difficult for the kitty to connect the word to what they’re doing. Additionally, loud shouting or punishment will only make a cat scared of you, and it doesn’t teach them the right behavior.

Instead, use a calm and firm voice to say “no” without screaming. While you say “no,” interrupt whatever they’re doing and redirect them. For example, move your cat away from a forbidden object while saying “no,” and give them a proper toy or scratching post instead. Finally, reward good choices. Praise your fur baby or give them a treat when they stop the bad habit or use their own toys.

Buster’s Retreat: A True Pup Paradise @cnn

Howard and Suze Rubin spent nearly $2 million modifying their New York home for a life with their dog Buster, complete with a pool, sprawling grounds and TVs to watch his favorite show. Now they’re selling their dog-designed home to make life easier for their aging pet and giving a sneak peek inside.

Howard and Suze Rubin, both 77 and currently going viral online thanks to an eye-opening video about their four-legged family member’s sprawling digs, bought the home for themselves and their adorable Bearded Collie, Buster. Having moved from Boca Raton, Fla., to escape the heat, the couple found that the relocation gave Buster more opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors comfortably.

While the 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom mid-century modern home and its 2.76-acre plot of land already sound like paradise as-is, what really impresses about Buster’s Retreat is the roughly $2 million the couple sunk into renovations. While the list of thoughtful upgrades was meant to benefit the entire family, it’s safe to say Buster might have been the one who got to enjoy them the most.

“Does Buster need a sister? I’m up for adoption,” one person said in response to the viral video on TikTok. “This is doing rich the right way,” another viewer chimed in.

A Pampered Life of Luxury

So what kind of upgrades can nearly $2 million get you? For starters, there are cameras all over the house so the couple can track where Buster is, and a swimming pool with two sun shelves where he can lounge in the water without fully jumping in. There are also TVs throughout the house for Buster to watch his favorite show, Paw Patrol, plus a giant couch-sized dog bed all his own.

Outside of the pool, Buster also has artificial turf and a fenced-in “playground,” umbrellas and Japanese maple trees scattered around the property to provide shade, and guest rooms that pretty much just serve as extra Buster rooms.

Despite all the hard work the Rubins put into making Buster’s Retreat a pup paradise, they are now preparing to leave their cozy abode behind, as Suze misses Florida and Buster is now dealing with arthritis. The couple plans to sell the house and return to the Sunshine State and move into a smaller, single-story home in hopes of making it easier for Buster to enjoy life as he gets older. 

As for the lovely renovations Buster has grown accustomed to, he won’t be totally leaving his life of luxury behind, as the Rubins are already planning renovations to their new home. And considering Buster has lived a fulfilling life, once working as a therapy dog and even helping people with Alzheimer’s, it’s safe to say he’s more than earned his pampered lifestyle well into his golden years.

When we think of Corgis, typically, we think of small-ish dogs with big hearts and absurdly fluffy butts. They’re one of the most iconic dog breeds of all time because of their super fluffy butts, in fact, as well as the fact that the late Queen Elizabeth II adored them!

Apollo the Corgi-Mute has a simple explanation for his gigantic size: he’s half Malamute! They knew that when they rescued him, but it didn’t really sink in that he could potentially be Malamute-sized. It looks like the only feature he really inherited from that side.

Apollo is about a year old. He’s already huge, and he’s only going to get bigger! If his size and the fact that he literally just looks like a giant Corgi weren’t enough, he also loves to wave at people on the street.

How To Care for Sphynx Kittens

As you can see in this video, these kittens have a very caring mother, but what should you know about caring for Sphynx kittens?

First of all, Sphynx cats are known for being very social and having rather big personalities, according to PetMD.

However, caring for Sphynx kittens and adult cats requires a bit more attention.

Because hairless cats don’t have fur, their skin is more sensitive.

They need frequent baths (at least every two weeks) to prevent oil buildup, according to Animalko.

They also need their ears and nails cleaned regularly, as oil and wax can build up in these areas.

Sphynx cats also require a strict diet because everything they eat affects their skin.

Kirsten Kranz, founder and executive director of Wisconsin-based Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue, told PetMD: “You want a high-quality food, because food affects the amount of oil that a Sphynx’s skin produces. The better the food, the less oil. If you don’t feed them a high-quality diet, oils accumulate more quickly and can lead to not just ongoing skin problems but also issues with ear wax and infections.”

One thing anyone with two dogs knows for sure is that they can and will argue about literally anything. You might think that an animal who can’t speak words has no ability to argue with anyone, but you would be wrong. And if you’ve made it this far without an animal argument, I am jealous of you.

Reactivity can be a huge problem for this breed, and it’s important that you make sure to curb those impulses as they arise. A lot of people even send their Dobermans to professional trainers or behaviorists: if that feels right for you, don’t be shy! Farm dogs are more than just “employees” on the farms they call home. They’re members of the family! When a member of the farm is feeling unsafe, the dog is often who they go to, and when there’s danger, the farm dog is typically on the front line, ready to defend them.

For one Sheepdog, being a member of the family also meant becoming a father. When a baby lamb needed a father, he was right there, ready and willing to jump right in. Their bond is just about the cutest thing you’ll see all day:

The Scott Homestead is a perfect place to be if you’re a baby lamb who needs a new parent. Though being a father isn’t something he’s done before, he definitely wanted to give it a try with this precious baby lamb. He’s a Sheepdog-Border Collie mix, and the farm is his main job.

The lamb was orphaned before she got to the Scott Homestead, so we’re not sure exactly what the circumstances are. However, we do know that the lamb is being sweet and living her best life with all of her new besties. Mostly, though, her new dad!

He loves sheep in general, not just when they’re sweet little babies. He got in a little bit of trouble earlier this year for getting a little bit distracted by his sheep besties, and it was just way too sweet:

I think Spud’s main problem is that he really puts the “sheep” in Sheepdog. He just wants to be one of them, and if you were to ask any of the actual sheep themselves, they’d definitely tell you he’s totally one of them.

How to Help Orphaned Lambs

If a lamb on your farm has become orphaned, it’s imperative that you get them help as soon as you possibly can. They can go from stable to in a lot of danger very, very quickly. As soon as you spot them, scoop them up and get them inside. Preferably with a single Sheepdog dad, but it’s not necessary.

When you find an orphaned lamb, there are a few things that are super important:

• Making sure they’re warm.
• Keeping them fed.
• Keeping them away from other animals that could potentially harm them.

Ideally, if you have a farm, you should have some emergency milk replacer and a vet on speed dial. Get them checked out and then slowly allow them to fold into the rest of your herd, hopefully with a Sheepdog as a guardian!
