If you take a puppy to the beach, he's probably going to need some mischief to get into while there.

Henry, a little Golden Retriever puppy, is no stranger to either of the above. Living in beautiful Brisbane, Australia, Henry's human parents take him on plenty of adventures around the area. And one of his favorite spots? Going to the beach, of course!

However when Henry gets his paws in the sand, no one is safe. Especially his dad.

While enjoying a nice day at the beach, Henry took some time to himself to dig away. Unfortunately for his dad, this meant he was covered in a ton of sand.

While it is very funny and even entertaining, digging is actually something that is very instinctual for dogs. Digging is and act that is tied to survival, hunting, and other behaviors. Dogs can dig to hide resources, find a cool place to lay when it's hot outside, and track powerful smells.

But also, at the end of the day, digging is a lot of fun for dogs. It helps them with boredom and stress, and is a great way to expend excess energy. Whisker Covers Cat Adoption Fees for the Month of June

For the entire month of June, Whisker is partnering with national nonprofit Best Friends Animal Society to help as many cats as possible find loving homes by covering adoption fees at Best Friends locations across the nation. And to sweeten the deal, those who adopt between now and June 30 will also get the opportunity to enter a giveaway to win a Litter-Robot 4 Best Friends Bundle, designed to make life at home with your cat cleaner, simpler and more convenient.

Meant to remove a key barrier in the adoption process, Whisker is making it easier for families to welcome a cat into their home at a time when animal shelters face seemingly endless capacity challenges. And while there’s a lot of financial responsibility that comes with pet ownership beyond adoption, this initiative certainly helps make the cost of entry a whole lot more manageable.

Little Angus is a precious baby Orange Kitten living in the United Kingdom. Angus's human parents share him often to social media, because his cuteness can really not be contained. Several of their videos of the little feline have gone very viral, and his most recent hit is no exception.

Angus has most recently been sporting a sweet harness and spending time outside in his garden. And it's safe to say that he absolutely loves it.

Angus is purr-fectly content to be outdoors, basking in the sun and taking in all of the new sights and smells. He's not stressed or agitated, he's surprisingly calm and seems to be completely enjoying the experience of getting out into the sushine.

Comments on the viral video are flooded with users sharing photos of their own orange cats, and all agreeing on how overwhelmingly adorable Angus really is.

Do Cats Like Going Outside?

While vets and experts agree it's not a good idea to let cats freely roam outside, many cats do enjoy getting fresh air and some time outdoors during their days. Being outside exposes cats to new sights, sounds, and stimulations, which is excellent for their mental well-being. They also (like many animals) love the opportunities to sun bathe and take in their time away from the indoors.

Most letter carriers have a cautious approach when it comes to dogs on their mail routes. A barking dog, or lunging pooch, can wreak havoc on a letter carrier’s day, but a friendly dog can brighten up the route and the mail delivery person’s day. Add a dog who’s willing to help into the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for a wonderful day delivering the mail.

Such is the case for a dedicated mail delivery person whose workday is helped by the most dutiful assistant, a Black Labrador Retriever named Zoe. In a video shared to social media, Zoe can be seen perched at her regular post in her driveway, awaiting her very favorite letter carrier.

As Zoe sees the mail truck come into view, she cautiously waits for the truck to make a complete stop before making a beeline for it. That’s when Zoe gets to work, grabbing her family’s mail with her mouth from the letter carrier before sprinting back to Mom to deliver the day’s letters and magazines.

More than a sweet social media dog video, this TikTok clip demonstrates the breed’s innate desire to retrieve. Humans are hard-pressed to find a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever without something in its mouth (sometimes Mom’s favorite shoes or Dad’s wallet).

Labrador Retrievers were bred to assist game hunters by retrieving waterfowl and hunted game. Even domesticated Retrievers still have an itch to hunt prey and retrieve. While dogs have a reputation for chasing down their local letter carrier, the chase is more about the dog protecting its territory.

Zoe’s enthusiasm about retrieving the mail stems from her natural prey and retrieving drives. Also deeply loyal, Retrievers find inherent joy in returning things to their humans, which the breed can take on as its own personal job—and with pride.

“That baby so happy she has a job,” noted one social media commenter.

While Zoe gets to satisfy her desire to retrieve, she also brings joy to her humans, including her devoted “boss.”

“So cool. And probably one of the driver’s favorite stops on her shift.”

There’s no doubt about that.

Cats may have a reputation for being enemies with puppies, but the term frenemies more accurately describes the relationship. Cats are actually quite playful, but are mercurial by nature, which means a cat’s mood can change seemingly on a dime. A two-month-old puppy found out firsthand that cats like to play, but only with a side of tough love.

Anyone with a sibling knows that sometimes playing can feel anything but fun when both parties don’t follow the rules of the game. As the puppy cautiously approaches its cat buddy, which is waiting at the bottom of the stairs, the cat swats a paw up the stairs aimed directly at the young dog. Not in on the joke, the pup gets confused. That’s when the cat scurries away after having its playful overture rebuffed. Confused, the sweet puppy retreats as well.

The two playful pets are clearly getting their social signals crossed despite both wanting to engage with one another. It’s typical of siblings, and typical of pet siblings too—even animals of different breeds.

What’s important here is that despite the crossed lines of communication, the cat and the dog remain patient with one another, repeatedly attempting to play before retreating to avoid getting angsty with the other. If only our human siblings could do the same.

Social media commenters were quick to note this loving relationship as well. “The cat is so gentle with the puppy,” one commenter observed of the two pet siblings.

Another added, “I can't tell if the cat is playing with the dog or the cat is bullying the dog,” in a relatable comment.

We’re going with playing over bullying, but sometimes siblings playing can feature a little of both. Regardless, these two animals are developing trust with one another by slowly learning to communicate, establish boundaries, and play. It’s only a matter of time until they’re best friends.

Golden Retrievers are popular, specifically in the United States, because they're know for being exceptional family pets. They often have friendly, amenable personalities and are highly sociable and trainable. Goldens are very patient and love to play, making them great additions to packs of both other animals and people.

On top of this, Goldens are very loyal dogs and form deep bonds with their people. It is important to remember that they're a very energetic breed that requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Every good shelter needs someone willing to do the hard work of being judged by a cat.

At Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, that someone is Mustache — a volunteer feline with an unbothered stare and an unofficial job title: cat-compatibility tester. Senior dogs come and go through the adoption pipeline, but none get the green light for a cat-friendly home until they've been subjected to Mustache's signature once-over – a "rigorous" meet and greet with the boss himself.

In this clip, Mustache mostly chills while the dogs are allowed to show how receptive they are to him (while supervised, of course). Their reactions range from total indifference (pass!), to cautiously curious (pass!), to downright friendly (the best kind of pass!). It's the ones who bark or show aggression that fail the Mustache test and are better suited to kitty-free homes. Only once, when a pup gets a little too up close and personal (butt sniffing is not tolerated), does Mustache react with a deserved swat, but hey, he runs a tight ship.

What to Look for in a Cat-Friendly Pup

Mustache is a priceless resource in evaluating a dog's tolerance for cats, but he's obviously an impractical one as well. Thankfully, there's real evidence to rely on when trying to understand which dogs are well-suited to sharing a future home with a feline — and it lines up surprisingly well with what Mustache is actually checking for.

Breed tendencies are a starting point, though not a guarantee. According to the American Kennel Club, dogs from the Toy and Sporting Groups — Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Papillons, Golden Retrievers, Labradors — tend to be easygoing, sociable, and quick to treat a cat like just another friend to make. Other breeds, however, can carry real risk. For example, dogs with strong natural prey drives such as Samoyeds, Siberian Huskies, and Malamutes are not typically recommended for cat households. None of this is set in stone, however — it's a tendency, and tendencies can be shaped.

A study highlighted by ScienceDaily found that dogs respond more strongly to the sound of a cat than to its sight or smell — and dogs with a history of harming cats took noticeably longer to settle and orient themselves once they heard those sounds. So whether a real, live, unimpressed cat evaluation is possible or not, always ask about a dog's history. A shelter or rescue should be able to tell you how a dog has behaved around cats, small animals, and people in the past — and that history is the single best predictor of the future.

Puppy-dog eyes are persuasive, but they're not a substitute for a track record.

Even by cat standards, Milo's cunning, strategic ways are impressive. The menacing Tabby cat wasn't interested in being carried at first. All it took was for Mom to let kitty sister Poppy take a ride around the house in the baby sling, and Milo's jealousy genes activated!

Cats being cats, you never know what they'll like until they're tested. In Milo's case, he may have instantly brushed off the baby sling, but he wasn't about to let Poppy enjoy it if he wasn't!

For the felines who aren't so finicky and like being carried, it could be because they enjoy the higher vantage point (as they'd do in the wild to look for prey), or just because they have complete trust in their humans. When you look at it like that, Milo's change of course is a whole lot sweeter.

Dogs often hide their pain, even when they are truly suffering. While some canines may get a little grumpy or isolate themselves when they're uncomfortable, others mask what they're feeling and try to maintain their normal demeanor.

The TikTok from @oldsoulsanimalres shared Boone's story and how the shelter he was taken to had no background information on him.

"You wouldn't know it by looking at this sweet face, but this senior rescue dog was in a lot of pain," the onscreen text explained as Boone stared into the camera. "Because Boone came to the shelter as a stray, very little was known about his past."

The shelter's medical team uncovered several serious medical conditions Boone was dealing with, though he showed no signs of discomfort.

"Boone came to the shelter as a stray with quite a list of issues," the caption revealed. Boone Is Now Enjoying Life at Old Souls

The sweet senior went to Old Souls Animal Rescue after surgery for his bladder stones and is feeling very welcome in his new environment.

"He is settling in beautifully into his new life," the story continued as the video showed Boone roaming in the yard, socializing with fellow fur babies, and getting lots of treats. "He’s making new friends, exploring (and marking his territory in all his new spaces), and has completely won over our volunteers with his sweetness!"

Boone is getting a lot of love and attention as he recovers and bringing a lot of joy to everyone around him.

"His journey is still ongoing," the caption read. "But for the first time in a long time, Boone now has the love, comfort, safety, and dignity every senior dog deserves."

All cats are special, but some are extremely rare, and we get to meet one of them in this viral video.

Meet Niska, a very rare Calico cat type known as the dilute or muted Calico.

How rare is Niska? According to FelineNest, dilute Calicos are estimated to occur in only 1 in 4,000 to 10,000 cats.

Veterinarian Dr. Rebecca MacMillan told FelineNest that because dilute Calicos are a result of such a unique genetic combination, “Most people will never see one in person.”

What Makes a Muted Calico Cat So Rare?

So what makes a muted Calico kitty so rare that you may never see one in your lifetime?

Let's first define what a muted Calico cat is.

The muted Calico or diluted Calico cat possesses the dilute gene, which regulates the formation of pigment for each hair strand.

If the gene is activated, the pigment affects more hair strands, resulting in the cat's color appearing more faded and soft than that of a regular Calico.

It should also be noted that muted Calicos are typically female because these color genes are located on the X chromosome.

Since females have two X chromosomes, this means more colors appear together, which is why Calico cats are predominantly female.

If you're curious about the chances of there being a male diluted Calico, according to FelineNest, only 1 in 3,000 regular Calicos have the chance of being male, and only 1 in 10,000 to 30,000 male cats could be a diluted Calico.

That is pretty darn rare!

It should also be noted that each dilute Calico cat's pattern is distinct, making them completely unique from any other kitty.

It appears that Niska lives with her cat sister, Mattie, but Mattie isn't a muted Calico.

As for the characteristics of a muted Calico cat, they are known to be intelligent, affectionate, adaptable, and a little shy with new people.

“If you share a bed with your pup and they bring a favorite toy to sleep with and they rest soundly, that’s a good sign that they trust that you’ll help keep the toy safe while they sleep,” Farah says. She adds that this may also mean your dog looks forward to morning playtime with you.

It’s not always easy to fall asleep when your dog is trying to curl up right on top of you, but trainers say this behavior is actually a sign of strong attachment. Many dogs feel safest when they’re physically close to their dog parents as they consider them to be their family and their protector.

If your dog twitches, barks softly, or “runs” in their sleep, it can seem strange. However, there's no need to worry, this is actually a sign of healthy deep sleep and means your furbaby is dreaming. Trainers associate this bedtime action with feeling secure enough to fully relax.

“Sleeping deeply enough to dream is a wonderful indicator that your dog feels safe with you,” Farah explains.

So, if you notice your pup doing this, it's a good thing and is common REM sleep behavior.

Niall Harbison rarely comes across puppies in his work with street dogs through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. Yet from time to time, he's called in to help a lone pup or an entire litter, usually in a dire situation.

The animal advocate recently came to the rescue of seven tiny puppies who were about to be subjected to swirling flood waters.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo described the rescue and the impending storm that would have trapped the puppies.

"Dumped like trash with a massive storm on the way," the onscreen text explained as Harbison carried out each puppy from underground rubble. "These tiny puppies had nowhere to run and no way to survive. It was a race against time."

Harbison and his team brought the precious puppies back to the Happy Doggo sanctuary to get them medically checked and provide them with the essentials.

"We got them all," the story continued as clips showed the puppies snuggled in a blanket and playing with Harbison in a grassy yard. "Warm, safe, and dry."

Harbison's Mission for Prevention

Part of Harbison's incentive for spearheading Happy Doggo was to get dogs sterilized to prevent more canines from living a life of homelessness. According to the rescue's website, over 160,000 sterilizations have been funded to date.

"We don’t see many puppies at Happy Doggo Land because our sterilization programs prevent them from being born on the streets," the captain explained. "But these seven are making the absolute most of their second chance!"

Harbison is obviously enjoying his time with the fluffy fur babies while trying to find them a forever home.

"We are definitely making the most of the puppy chaos," the video concluded.

Why Cats Are Wired to Hide Their Pain

While other pets (like dogs) may try to get your attention by any means necessary if they’re feeling pain, cats will often go to great lengths to make sure you never find out. 

According to Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director of Ferndale Kennels and Travel Pet Relocation Services, “Cats are small carnivores, so while they are a predator, they are also threatened by bigger predators due to their smallish size relative to them. As a prey animal in this way, they know not to show signs of pain, as weakness symptoms would make them more vulnerable to attack.”

Raised to protect themselves from their environment and potentially dangerous attackers, it’s not surprising to see why cats may try to keep pain to themselves as best they can. 

Signs Your Cat Is in Pain

Even if your cat doesn't exhibit any noticeable external injuries, there are some more subtle signs you can look for to see if your cat is in pain. 

According to Dr. Tanya Schoeman, veterinary specialist physician and Royal Canin feline health specialist, these signs may include the following: 

• Changes in energy levels
• Different sleeping patterns
• Increased vocalization or restlessness
• Subtle weight changes
• Changes in toileting habits
• Hesitation before jumping or using stairs, or difficulty getting up after resting
• Changes in grooming habits

While they might not exhibit all of these signs, they are some examples of ways a cat may show they're in pain.

I Think My Cat Is in Pain: What Should I Do Next?

If you believe your cat is in pain and notice changes in their behavior, the best thing to do is to contact your vet immediately. Considering that cats don’t tend to show their pain, any sign visible enough for you to notice means it's time to head to the vet.

Dr. Murdoch adds that “fear and pain often look very similar: hiding, hissing, swiping at people with the paw [and] refusing to move. If in doubt, call the vet for advice.” 

Treating a cat can be a complex situation, especially if they don’t want to let you help them, but keeping your cat healthy and safe is key to a long and prosperous life for your feline friend. With these tips and signs of pain to look for in your cat, you can act faster and help get them the best possible care.

Body language, touch, and vocalizations are all part of a deaf kitty's communication.

The TikTok from @franflight shared Pinky's story and confirmed that the cat is 24 years old.

"Pinky is the oldest cat that has come into our rescue," the onscreen text explained as Pinky huddled in her blanket inside the kennel, then snuggled with a staff member. "His previous owners were adamant that this is his correct age since they have had him since he was a kitten."

Sadly, the only family Pinky had ever known fell on very hard times and made the difficult decision to surrender their cat.

To say the British Shorthair kitten's eyes are rare is an understatement. The interesting color blend is only found in less than 1% of cats in the world!

While many kitties have heterochromia—one blue eye and one gold—the kitten of the moment is said to have dichroic/sectoral eyes, which happens when a single iris splits the pigment distribution between blue and gold.

No one told me that Maine Coons are often more dog-like than typical cats, following their people from room to room, seeking interaction and preferring to be part of the action rather than spending all day curled up in a lap. But those quirks just made me love him even more.

If you're on the fence about getting a Maine Coon, they can be an incredible addition to your life, but just know they aren't like other cats. Looking back now, there are a few things I wish someone had told me about before bringing home a Maine Coon. Some are silly, some are expensive and some are surprisingly sweet. Here's what I learned over my years as a cat parent that I think others should know before getting one of these adorable, giant felines.

What I Wish I Knew Before Getting a Maine Coon These gentle giants come with a few quirks most owners don't expect.

Below are eight things I’ve discovered over the years of my family having a Maine Coon that many cat lovers don't think about before adding one of these cuties to their household.

1. You Can't Use a Normal Cat Carrier

Nobody warns you that becoming a Maine Coon parent comes with a unique challenge: finding a cat carrier big enough for your growing furry friend. What starts as a tiny kitten that fits comfortably in a standard carrier can quickly turn into a majestic, dog-sized feline that barely squeezes through the door. As your cat grows, upgrading to an oversized carrier becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity. After all, your gentle giant deserves plenty of space to stretch out and travel in comfort.

“Their huge size means they often require larger-sized travel crates than average cats,” says Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director at Ferndale Kennels. “More space, more ventilation. Don’t expect to squeeze them into a regular cat carrier.”

2. They’re Water-Loving Cats

Most people don't expect a cat to enjoy getting wet, but Maine Coons have a huge fascination with water. It's one of the breed's most charming—and sometimes messy—quirks that pet parents are unaware of.

If you're thinking of getting one of these cats, don't be surprised if they spend time splashing in their water dish, investigating running faucets, or eagerly supervising your bath time. You may even want to get a cat water fountain since Maine Coons often prefer moving water to a traditional bowl.

3. They're Not as Chill and Low Maintenance as People Think

When you get a cat, you might assume they'll be laidback and super chill. However, Maine Coons are actually incredibly athletic despite their size, so don't underestimate their jumping ability and need for playtime.

In fact, Maine Coons can leap up to six feet high and enjoy perching up above to supervise their surroundings, so you may want to invest in taller, high-quality cat accessories that can both withstand their weight and give them a bird’s eye view of their surroundings.

4. They Require Bigger Everything

Just know that Maine Coons are big cats, with males easily reaching 15-25 pounds or more. They also continue growing until they’re about 3-5 years old, which is longer than most breeds.

Because of this, you can't just go out and buy cat normal supplies. Instead, you have to get larger cat furniture than you'd expect, which includes everything from cat trees and window hammocks to litter boxes. This is probably one of the biggest mistakes new Maine Coon owners make without thinking twice about it.

“You need to think vertically and horizontally, with sturdy cat trees, wide litter boxes and furniture that can handle their weight,” suggests veterinarian Dr. Ruth Roberts. “Cheap cat furniture won’t cut it.”

5. They Need Mental Stimulation and “Jobs” to Stay Happy

Before getting a Maine Coon, I thought keeping a cat entertained would be fairly simple. What I didn't realize was just how smart this breed truly is. These cats crave mental stimulation and love having a purpose.

“Puzzle feeders, interactive toys, training sessions and environmental rotation are important,” Roberts says. “Without adequate enrichment, boredom can contribute to overeating or undesirable behaviors. Daily active play and vertical space are especially beneficial.”

6. They’re Social, People-Oriented Cats

While it’s easy to assume all cats are independent and standoffish, these devoted companions are a far cry from the norm, which is why I was shocked to learn how social and dog-like they are!

“Maine Coons are often described as ‘dog-like’ because they want to be with you,” Roberts explains. “They'll follow you room to room, greet you at the door and many even enjoy playing fetch.”

If you’re gone 10 or more hours per day, and you don’t have any other pets, your Maine Coon may grow lonely and even get depressed without another companion around. 

7. They Need to Be on a Diet

While adult Maine Coons generally weigh more than the average house cat, it’s important not to overfeed them. When it comes to their diet, quality matters more than ever. That's why a moisture-rich, high-quality diet is ideal, such as veterinarian-approved raw, gently cooked diets for cats, or high-protein canned food.

“With a cat this size, nutrition is especially important,” explains Dr. Dean Vicksman, veterinarian and EveryCat Health Foundation board president. “You want to avoid relying on dry food as the primary diet. A large proportion of indoor cats still eat mostly kibble, and it’s associated with higher risks of obesity, diabetes, kidney disease and urinary tract issues, particularly in predisposed breeds.”

8. They Can Be Prone to Genetic Health Conditions

This is the one I really wish someone had prepared me for before getting a Maine Coon as I didn't know Maine Coons were prone to several inherited health conditions, with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) being one of the most serious.

HCM is a heart disease that can affect cats of any breed, but it occurs more frequently in Maine Coons due to a genetic predisposition. Reputable breeders typically screen their breeding cats for HCM and other hereditary conditions, making it important to ask about health testing before adopting one.

“They may also have increased risk of hip dysplasia and spinal muscular atrophy depending on lineage,” Roberts says. “Kidney health is another area to monitor. Supporting hydration through a moisture-rich diet can be helpful, and in integrative practice, some clinicians also consider supporting kidney function through individualized nutrition strategies.”

Because of their health concerns, routine vet visits, vaccines, appointments and medications to help care for Maine Coons all add up over time, which a lot of first-time Maine Coon cat owners don't expect.
