Dogs living on the streets without a home is a global crisis and requires tireless commitment when attempting to make a positive difference. Niall Harbison created his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, almost five years ago and continues to be amazed by the love and resilience of the canines he comes across.

Harbison just rescued a dog brave enough to momentarily let her guard down despite being in fragile health. He gave her the name Marilyn Monroe as a sign of her regaining her beauty.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo told Marilyn's story and described the condition she was in when Harbison found her.

"Five days ago, this beautiful soul walked through our doors," the onscreen text explained as Marilyn sweetly approached Harbison. "She's an old girl and her body is completely exhausted. Marilyn was in desperate need of a miracle."

Marilyn barely had any fur and her skin was clearly damaged, causing her major discomfort and pain. She received medical care at Happy Doggo, along with love and support from her new furry friends.

"Our medical team immediately got to work, treating her painful skin," the story continued. "And our rescue dogs stepped in to show her the way, teaching her that she can feel safe, and that humans can be kind too."

Marilyn Monroe Has a Heart of Gold

A previous post from @niallharbison shared that the sweet dog's health concerns included malnourishment, issues with her eyes and ears, and emotional trauma. Yet Marilyn got the courage to approach Harbison when he arrived.

"Despite being totally broken and ignored and forgotten about on the streets, with horrendous skin and aching bones, she waddled over to meet me and say hello," the caption read. "As her head rested into me, I could feel like she was a dog that was completely broken and begging for help, sick of being ignored."

Harbison was so touched by the dog's trust and attempt to reach out, he made a vow to help her heal and gave her the iconic name for a special reason.

"As the vets treated her, I whispered a promise in her ear," the text shared. "Her life would change starting today. She would get her dignity back. I called her Marilyn Monroe because she will be a beautiful blond again soon."

Harbison is keeping his promise and making sure Marilyn is getting everything from medical treatment and proper nutrition to tons of love and affection to help her recover.

"Her healing starts here," the video concluded as Marilyn relaxed in a hammock wearing a fresh new bandana.

Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina, and a retirement village for senior dogs.

Have you ever wondered, "How do I make my dog feel okay and safe?" If so, you're not alone. It turns out that what you say can go a long way when it comes to soothing a dog. Here are the best words and phrases trainer recommended using to improve their mood.

1. "Good boy/girl"

No matter if you have a big or small dog, they're bound to feel uneasy from time to time. One calming phrase for dogs you can use is one you probably already know, but had no idea it could reduce anxiety. "There isn’t a time that a dog parent has said 'good boy' or 'good girl' without following it with love, affection or treats," Murphy says.

For this reason, Murphy says using "good boy/girl" is a great example of positive reinforcement training when your pup needs some reassuance in a scary moment. "If those words are consistently followed by affection, rewards, or positive experiences, they become powerful markers that let your dog know everything is alright."

2. "Go to Your Crate/Bed"

This one may surprise some dog moms and dads, but trainers emphasize that using terms like “crate,” “bed,” or “place” isn’t about confinement or punishment when you instruct your pup to go there. Instead, it’s about direction, routine and safety.

When you send a dog to their crate or bed, you’re guiding them to a familiar, predictable space where they know what to do and how to relax. According to Murphy, this clarity is part of what helps dogs settle down emotionally.

“All good things happen there, and it is their safe space,” Murphy says. “Dogs generally relax more easily when they know exactly what is expected of them. A well-conditioned place, bed, or crate becomes a predictable refuge where the dog can settle down and decompress.”

In many cases, this simple cue can help reduce anxiety and reinforce a sense that they have nothing to worry about because your dog is returning to a space associated with relaxation and comfort.

3. "Sit"

What if a single word could help a dog feel grounded, focused, and safe in an overwhelming moment? Trainers say that word is “sit.”

Murphy points out that “sit” is often seen as a basic obedience command, but in practice, it can do much more than that. “In reality, it often serves as a familiar task that helps a stressed dog shift their focus away from uncertainty and toward something they know how to do successfully,” Murphy reports.

Trainers say this easy action can be grounding, helping anxious dogs feel more stable and reassured. Over time, this simple cue can help reinforce a sense of comfort and help a dog feel safe because they understand what’s expected and can succeed in the moment.

4. "Yes!"

When your pup doesn't feel safe, it can be hearbreaking as their pet parent, but what you say to your nervous dog can reduce your dog’s stress. In fact, “yes” might be the simplest word you can say, but for dogs, it can be deeply reassuring and act as a calming command as well.

In dog training, “yes” is used as a marker word, a clear signal that a dog has done something right and that a reward is coming. Trainers say this kind of positive reinforcement doesn’t just teach behavior, it can also help calm anxious dogs and make them feel safe and like everything is okay in the moment.

“When you reinforce the word ‘yes’ with a reward for a dog, it tells the dog they got it right,” Murphy explains.

5. "Come"

"For many overwhelmed dogs, hearing 'come' from a trusted owner means reconnecting with the person who provides guidance and security," Murphy says. "It creates a clear path forward when a dog may be feeling unsure about what to do next."

6. "Let's play!"

Sometimes words and phrases can distract your dog from whatever makes them feel uneasy. That's where terms like "let's play" come in handy.

"Engagement has a remarkable ability to change a dog's emotional state and improve your relationship with your dog," Murphy explains. "It encourages movement, engagement, curiosity and connection. When a dog is capable of playing, it's often a sign that they feel safe enough to relax and enjoy the moment."

7. "Treat?

When it comes to reassuring words for dogs, this is one dogs love hearing. "Most dogs quickly develop positive associations with the word 'treat' because of what consistently follows it," Murphy notes. "The anticipation alone is enough to brighten many dogs' moods—and their owners'."

8. "Let's go!"

If you need an idea to help with dog anxiety relief that can encourage your furry sidekick to be more relaxed, try saying "Let's go!"

This phrase is especially good to say outloud to your stressed pup because it lets them know they're not being left behind. What pup wouldn't feel more okay after hearing it? "Dogs are comforted by leadership, and this phrase communicates direction and purpose, and usually something fun," Murphy shares.

"Dogs pay far more attention to how we say something than the actual word itself," Murphy says. "A calm, confident tone communicates stability, while a frantic or emotional tone can accidentally signal that something is wrong."

Murphy recommends speaking clearly, calmly and naturally to help a dog feel safe. "Many pet parents make the mistake of using a high-pitched, worried voice when their dog is nervous," Murphy adds. "While it's well-intentioned, it can sometimes reinforce the idea that there is something to be concerned about."

Though, no matter what kind of cat you have, all cats should have access to cool indoor spaces, fresh water, shaded resting areas, and limited exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.

There's a German Shepherd and there's a Goldendoodle. Both are fully grown, both are bigger than your average cat by quite a bit and both are quietly getting shown up by a kitten who isn't even done growing yet.

The TikTok from @sovereignmainecoons sums up the situation perfectly. The transcript says it all: "Two full size dogs and a Maine Coon that's not even fully grown yet. A German Shepherd and a Goldendoodle. Why are you so big? Why are you so majestic?"

The kitten just sits there with his huge paws, long tail and a totally chill vibe. Completely nonchalant. The German Shepherd suspiciously keeps an eye on him. The Goldendoodle does his usual friendly, unbothered thing. And the Maine Coon, even though he's technically the baby here, acts like he's the king and the dogs are peasants.

The comments knew exactly what was going on:

And the final verdict: "That Maine Coon is the alpha alright"

It appeared several times in the comments, so what does "mogging" actually mean? According to Merriam-Webster, it's internet slang for straight up outdoing someone, basically looking or doing better than the people around you. It's all over TikTok, Instagram and Reddit these days. The word actually goes back to an early 2000s term, "AMOG," short for "Alpha Male of the Group." Now, Gen Z and Gen Alpha use it for pretty much anything, from a strong jawline to being the tallest person in the room.

In this case, the people getting mogged are two full-grown dogs by a super-sized kitten.

And here's the part that should really worry those dogs: this kitten isn't done growing. Not even close.

How Big Can Maine Coons Get?

Here's the thing about Maine Coons. Most cats are basically full-grown within a year or two. Not these guys. According to Healthy Pet, Maine Coons can keep growing until they're 3 to 5 years old.

Once they're fully grown, males usually end up somewhere between 13 and 18 pounds, and females come in even smaller at 8 to 12 pounds. But honestly, weight isn't even the craziest part. It's their length. From nose to tail, a Maine Coon can stretch anywhere from 18 to 40 inches, with males usually outsizing females thanks to those big furry tails. At the shoulder they stand 10 to 16 inches tall, and if they get up on their hind legs, they can hit 16 inches.

Compared to other big cat breeds like Ragdolls, Savannahs and Norwegian Forest Cats, Maine Coons really stand out for that length.

So this kitten, already holding his own next to two fully-grown dogs, still has several years left to grow into himself.

The German Shepherd and the Goldendoodle might want to get used to the new hierarchy now because it's only going to get more obvious from here.

"Daddy" Dexter is clearly great with foster kittens, and his little pushes and murmurs show off his nurturing nature. The kitten tolerates it as much as they can, and they're ultimately a great sport about being, well, daddy-ed by Dexter.

Why Some Cats Take Naturally to Foster Kittens

Cats who take naturally to fosters are ones who have a deeply ingrained maternal (or in Dexter's case, paternal) instinct. Grown cats can often recognize how fragile and vulnerable kittens are, and given their very social nature they'll be inclined to step in to care for them. This instinct overrides any sort of territorial behavior and makes way for the foster kitten to be cared for instead.

For adult cats, they can also view baby cats as more companions who pose little to no threat, making them more inclined to take them in, in a sense. This sense of mentorship and hierarchy makes them interested in being a step in parent to continue to maintain their dominance, and the pack sense in the home.

On top of all of this, most cats also often have a "litter" mentality about them. This means that they're naturally drawn to taking care of the entire litter, regardless of actual paternity or maternity. Cats will nurse kittens that aren't their own, and look out for the vulnerable ones they see. This is a survival technique that has lasted for generations.

All of this to say, Dexter is somewhat biologically made to be a good foster dad. It's touching to see him step (or push and nom-nom) his way into a role he was born for.

Marvin is having the time of his life rolling around in the grass, almost like he's obsessed or trying to scratch an itch that he just can't reach. But according to experts, there are other reasons why your pup might be doing the same thing Marvin's doing when you go out for a walk. 

According to PetMD, a dog rolling around in the grass is perfectly normal for these silly pups. Sure, scratching an itch could be one reason they're choosing to roll around, but there are a few other reasons, too. 

Sometimes, dogs roll in the grass or dirt to help mask their scent, which is something their ancestors would have done with more actual need than dogs today. Doing this can help them pick up another animal's scent, but they also do it to cover up their own scent.

According to Morris, some of the more obvious signs include tail wagging, physical contact like leaning or licking you, following you around, and sleeping near you. 

While every dog might have their own specific ways of showing love, these behaviors are the more general signs you can look out for to see if your furry friend is showcasing their love for you. 

Why Your Dog Doesn't Always Demand Pets

Although humans may have gotten used to petting any and every dog they meet, it’s not always a welcome sign to dogs. Some dogs don’t demand or want pets, and it has nothing to do with you personally. 

According to Dr. Annie Valuska, Purina pet behaviorist and certified applied animal behaviorist, “Just like people, individual dogs have different preferences for how much physical contact they want from humans! This can be affected by a dog’s genetics, their experiences and most likely a combination of both.”

Dr. Valuska adds that each dog’s emotional state can also determine how much ‘personal space’ they want. While at first they might be cuddly, a change to a less favorable environment or sudden changes in events may cause them to want to be on their own for a bit. 

Signs Your Dog Is Asking for Love

Morris says that dogs may ask for love in the same ways they show it. This includes behaviors like:

• Nosing your hand
• Putting a paw on you
• Leaning against you

To properly return affection to dogs, it’s vital to know the signs that they are uncomfortable first. “The term for these appeasement behaviors is ‘calming signals,’ and dogs use them to express discomfort with what’s happening and attempt to create more distance,” Dr. Valuska says.

Behaviors like turning their head away, hard blinking, lip or nose licking, freezing, yawning, licking the person (also known as a “kiss to dismiss”), pinning their ears back, panting, biting, growling and barking are just a few stress signals Dr. Valuska says to look out for. If your furry friend exhibits any of these while you’re petting them, it’s best to give them some space. 

On the other hand, dogs may appreciate affection in the form of “mutual play sessions, chest rubs, soft verbal praise and training/enrichment sessions,” Morris says. 

The 3-Second Rule: How to Tell If Your Dog Actually Wants More Pets

While they may not be able to verbally tell you, dogs tend to be very open in letting humans know if they’re enjoying an interaction or not. Known as the 3-second rule. Dr. Valuska explains it as the notion of frequently pausing and assessing a dog’s behavior to see if they’re still enjoying the interaction. 

“During that pause, momentarily withdraw contact,” Dr. Valuska says. “If the dog freezes, disengages, or creates more space by turning or moving away, that’s a sign that they’d probably prefer for the petting to end. On the other hand, if the dog nudges your hand, scooches closer or otherwise tries to get your attention back on them, then they’d likely appreciate more petting!” 

Paying attention to these subtle cues is important not only for keeping your dog’s boundaries, but also for letting them know that you respect their personal space. 

Affection vs. Anxiety: When Clinginess Signals a Problem

Although at times pet parents can joke about having a ‘clingy’ dog, sometimes it’s a sign of more serious emotional issues. 

“Sometimes excessive clinginess can indicate stress, fear or anxiety," Morris says. "A key sign to look for is your dog's ability to relax independently. A confident dog will enjoy being near you, but should be able to self-soothe and settle if you are occupied, while anxious dogs will struggle to cope without their human present.” 

If you happen to find that your dog struggles to be alone, Dr. Valuska recommends consulting your veterinarian and a credentialed dog behavior expert, as separation anxiety is unlikely to resolve on its own and may worsen over time.

While every pet parent is confident in the amount of love they give to their pups, it’s important to take a step back and evaluate what your furry friend is really trying to tell you. Even if some of these subtle signs may have gone unnoticed, it’s never too late to learn about your dog’s behavior and what they may need from you.

Foster mom Britt shared this sweet video on TikTok on June 11, and I am squealing over all the adorableness.

One of the kitties she's currently caring for is sound asleep on the Golden Retriever's back, and the dog doesn't seem to mind at all.

According to Britt, this is a very common occurrence. In the caption, she wrote, "the way you can find him riding her like a horse at any given moment has me dead."

There are a couple of other kittens from the litter in their home, too, but they don't seem to have formed the same bond with the dog that this one did. Something tells me this could be a foster fail in the making.

How to Help Dogs and Cats Become Friends

In some cases, dogs and cats will immediately take to each other way that these two adorable besties did, but that's never a given, and it's better to be prepared for them to both need a bit of an adjustment.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), one of the most important things you can do to ensure that your dog and cat become friends is to avoid rushing the process. You want to take your time introducing them to each other, and you want to give them each their own space while you do it.

This means keeping them apart in separate rooms at first, while also giving the dog and cat something that smells like the other animal, like a toy or a blanket, to introduce the idea that a new friend is becoming part of their life. Your next step can be feeding them each on separate sides of the same door at the same time.

When you feel like they are ready to come face-to-face, you can do so with a pet gate between them while keeping your dog leashed.

Even when they're able to be in the same room together, they should be supervised, and each animal should have their own space to retreat to where they will be left alone if they choose. From there, it can help to reward your pets with a treat every time they interact positively with each other, and hopefully, their relationship will only grow.

Both of my dogs are pretty flexible when it comes to food. If it's edible (or even if it isn't), chances are they'll eat it. There have been times when they turn their nose up at something new, like if I try to introduce a vegetable or throw in some bland white rice. Other than that, my fur babies aren't that finicky.

This Goldendoodle seems to have higher standards than my dogs and gave his dad a hard time when he didn't get some extra goodies on top of his regular meal.

In the TikTok from @chrisgiaimo, the Goldendoodle sat at the entrance of the kitchen with an obvious look of displeasure on his face. The dog was clearly disgruntled about something and wasn't afraid to show it.

"Anybody else's dog just sit there staring at you in disgust after you give them food if you don't put some extra toppings on it?" the onscreen text asked.

The Doodle's expression spoke volumes about his disappointment with dinner. He was obviously trying to make his dad feel guilty for depriving him of an upscale dish. Apparently, the precious pooch prefers items of a dairy variety.

"He will refuse to eat unless he gets a little extra on top," the caption revealed. "He prefers whipped cream or a pinch of parmesan cheese."
