Labrador Goes Into True 'Focus' Mode Upon Realizing He's Getting French Fries

2 hours 26 min ago

Service dogs are amazing. They're genuinely smarter than a lot of other animals (and, let's be real, some people), and without them, millions of people would have a much harder time navigating life in general.

At the end of the day, though, they are just dogs, and dogs love little treats. Service dogs have certainly earned it: it can't be easy to be someone's protector, their eyes or ears or the only thing keeping them from a trip to the hospital. On Tuesday, May 7th, one service's dog's reaction to getting his reward was just too funny:

@emmaomlor

man was FIENDING for a fry #fyp #foryourpage #foryou #servicedog

Sandwich and Emma are a total power-duo. I bet they make a great working team!

Sandwich and Emma have been together for a while. She's never shared exactly what service Sandwich is trained in, but that's alright; we don't need to know. We only need to know that he's adorable, loves French fries, and is a recent college graduate. Just three days ago, Sandwich and Emma got to walk the stage at their Ohio State University graduation - a video that garnered almost 400,000 likes. Sandwich is a star!

In his spare time, though, Emma promises that Sandwich just a regular dog; he's annoying, affectionate, perpetually hungry, and always down to play a game of fetch. He's been a great partner to her, both at work and at home, and a great partner deserves a little treat.

The Best Treats for Working Dogs

All dogs should be fed a healthy diet to keep them in good shape, but service dogs especially need to be at their best all the time. A good diet will keep their minds sharp and decrease the likelihood that they'll slip up, whether that means forgetting something or doing it wrong. No matter what, a slip-up on their part could put both of you in danger.

But, at the end of the day, they're a dog, and everyone loves to treat their dogs. Luckily, there are plenty of healthy treats for dogs that will feel special and serve their minds and bodies, like:

  1. Peanut butter
  2. Pieces of fruit, particularly watermelon
  3. Tiny cubes of cheese
  4. Homemade treats full of their favorite things
    1. Pupsicles are a BIG hit in the summer!

Whenever possible, I try to avoid giving my dogs treats that were made by a machine - call me a crunchy dog mom if you must, but it makes me feel better. They likely won't hurt them, but they're unnecessary, and expensive at that! Instead, I make my own using different recipes every time so they don't get bored.

Oh, who am I kidding, my dogs get "junky" treats sometimes, too, especially from restaurants. I must admit that my youngest loves a French fry just like Sandwich does, but I'd like to highlight an unsung hero of the drive-thru: apple slices. They're super sweet and crunchy so dogs love them, and there's only a few in the package so you don't have to worry about overindulgence!

Dad Creates Perfect Outdoor 'Cat TV' to Make Kitty's Life Better

3 hours 11 min ago

If there's one thing I know about cats, it's that they're busybodies (maybe that's why I feel that they are my kindred spirits). Mine could spend hours sitting at the window, people watching... and bug watching... and bird watching. Of course, when the school bus comes in the afternoon to drop all of the kids off, that's a very big moment, and forget it if a bird or squirrel (or, on rare occasions, a bunny) ends up in our yard. That is prime time for my kitties.

It makes sense that experts often recommend putting a cat tree in the window for our cats so they have something fun to watch during the day, especially if they are home alone on a regular basis. But this cat dad really took things to another level that I'm sure his kitty was very appreciative of.

In a video shared by @winstonandspooky on Tuesday, May 7, this cat dad explained that he was making an addition to his yard to make sure that his Tabby cat, whose name is Winston, has better days: A bird feeder right outside the window he likes to sit in.

Though Winston did take notice of the new lawn ornament right away, unfortunately, the neighborhood birds did not — but that was a problem with a very easy solution. Once he put out bird food for them to lead them to the feeder, they finally got wise to what was going on... and Winston was very into it!

"This is your sign to go get a feeder because now Winston hangs out here all day waiting for his little flying friends to come eat food," he wrote.

This video is all the proof I need that every cat parent needs to get this for their cats (me included).

Is Birdwatching a Good Activity for Cats?

The core of a cat's love of watching birds outside is because it appeals to their hunter instincts — if they were outside, they'd be trying to pounce! But since many cats spend their entire lives indoors, is this a safe activity to foster in our feline friends?

According to Spark Lark, yes — as long as everyone is kept safe in the process. This means that you have outdoor cats, you'll want to keep any bird feeders far off the ground, where they don't run the risk of becoming your kitty's next meal, and make sure you're choosing safe and healthy bird foods for your new friends.

The activity itself is actually really good for your cats, since watching birds will keep them stimulated, and they'll be having fun. Just make sure you still play with your kitty, too!

Cat Grooming Senior Pit Bull Every Night Is the Sweetest Caretaker

3 hours 22 min ago

Our pets love each other, even if it doesn't always seen like it. They're siblings, after all, and siblings are like that. For as much as you fight and you swear that you hate each other, you know in your heart that you don't mean it.

If you get to live into old age with your siblings, you're very lucky. And once you do, you'll want only one thing: to care for them and to love them. On Monday, May 6th, a cat and dog pair modeled this kind of care for us, and it was just too sweet to bear:

@jtwohawks

They are the sweetest pair. #pitbullsoftiktok #pitmix #catsanddogs

♬ Stuff We Did (from 'Up') - Piano Version - your movie soundtrack

I love this pair, and I'm so grateful for @jtwohawks sharing this video with us. How cute are these two?!

Related: Senior Pit Bull with Disability Enjoying a Walk on the Beach Is Such an Inspiration

These two are sisters: the kitty's name is Akaiba, and the Pit Bull's name has not been shared yet. They have a few other pets, but Akaiba and her Pit Bull sister's relationship is the most special of all. Every night, the dog demands that Akaiba grooms her; it's soothing.

Their mom says she rescued the Pittie Mix from a backyard breeder back in 2010, making this sweet girl nearly 14 years old. The average life expectancy of a Pit Bull is anywhere from 13-15 years, so it's amazing to know she's spending her last few years in peace!

Pets Should Be Allowed to Groom Each Other

There's no question that Akaiba is allowed to groom her sister; in fact, she demands it. While some anxious pet parents might worry that species grooming each other might be unsanitary, it's fine for the most part. Cats and dogs can groom each other with little issues - if you've got a long-haired animal, they may get some hairballs, but it's okay.

The older a dog (or a cat) gets, the less they'll be grooming themselves. Doing it might make their necks hurt, or they might not be able to bend the way they used to. You shouldn't rely solely on your other pets to groom your senior one, but it definitely doesn't hurt - and sometimes, it's soothing. You should be giving your old dog/cat regular baths and keeping an eye on them for signs of hair loss, weight loss, or a general drop in quality of life.

You should avoid allowing your dog or cat to groom most other animals, though; reptiles, rodents, and livestock could carry diseases. But for Akaiba and her sweet older sister, it's just a precious sign of love!

Rescued Beagle Wags Tail with Gratitude After Finally Having His Own Bed

A sweet rescue Beagle appreciates the good things in life and is full of gratitude to be sleeping in his own bed.

On May 7, 2024, TikTok user Beagle Freedom Project (@beaglefreedom) shared a video introducing us to a sweet rescue dog named Hulk. Take a look.

"Hulk, the animal testing survivor Beagle, is so grateful to have his very own bed," the text on the video reads.

As we watch the video, we can see Hulk, the senior Beagle, who loves sleeping in his own bed.

The bed, which is a dark gray color, looks like it has toes and toe beans, and Hulk fits perfectly in the bed. he's so happy about it that his tail will not stop wagging.

"Hulk, who spent his life in a testing lab, has found peace with his amazing forever family," the video's caption reads.

In the comments, people had much to say about the sweet dog and his comfort in this cozy bed.

"The people that save these animals in the real heroes in the world," one person wrote.

"Precious baby," another shared. "God bless him!"

"So nice to see him happy," someone else wrote.

"Finally, he has the freedom he deserves," another shared.

How to Care For an Older Dog

According to the Walkin' Pets Blog, there are several things you can do to help you care for your senior dog as they get older and may experience health or comfort issues.

For example, the experts suggest you watch for potential joint issues.

"Middle-aged dogs and senior dogs have a tendency to develop joint problems, especially osteoarthritis, due to many factors," Walkin' Pets Blog. "Intense physical activity, obesity, and a poor diet, among other factors, add a lot of strain on the joints."

However, even though older dogs may experience joint pains, it's important for them to continue to exercise safely. Having strong muscles will help stabilize their joints, too.

Walkin' Pets Blog says, "Despite how tired your senior dog might look or how disinterested they might be in taking a walk or playing fetch, you need to find a way to coax them into it."

Seeing new smells, toys, animals, and adventures they get from going out and exercising can give them enough pep and energy, which is perfect for dogs that are getting older.

If your dog is struggling to sleep, Senior Dog Revolution says having a "cozy" zone is something that can help older dogs. They explained, "We transitioned our senior dog slowly from the bed to this area over a few weeks and provided him with everything he could need there."

In their cozy zone, they had "bedding, food, water, and pee pads. We found that in combination with the next tip, this safe, ‘zone’ for our senior dog was really helpful."

We love seeing how happy Hulk is in his super cozy bed.

Basset Hound's Sweet Thanks After Being Rescued with Her Pups Is Making Everyone Cry

4 hours 22 min ago

Basset Hounds are an underrated dog breed. They're typically thought of as being a little bit mean; they're hunting hounds, and they're kind of aloof. Not to mention their loud, low bark! They're anything but cutesy, and yet, they're some of the sweetest dogs ever.

On Tuesday, May 7th, one Basset Hound was rescued from a shop after giving birth there. Despite her issues, she and all eight of her babies were rescued, and she's come around in a great way:

@caitiesfosterfam

This poor mama gave birth this weekend alone, on the streets, in the pouring rain. She sought out shelter anywhere she could, and she found her way into a shop. When the workers got there this morning, they saw her with her newborns. They made a space for her to rest with her babies while they reached out to rescues. That’s when I heard about her and rushed that way. The eight surviving puppies are hanging in there. They’re active and nursing. But they were cold and covered in fleas when I got them. We are fighting an uphill battle for sure. There are 5 boys and 3 girls. The smallest girl is about half the size of her littermates and appears much weaker. I’ll continue to give her the best chance, but odds aren’t on her side. It’s going to be tough for all of these babies, but their mama has fought so hard for their survival. So now we’re all here to help them. It’s all up from here. I just updated our rescue Amazon wishlist to include things we need for mama and her babies. Direct link in bio! Caitie runs a rescue for medically-needy dogs. She receives a ton of praise for doing so, but at the same time, there are a lot of people who don't understand why she does it; they believe these dogs don't really have a shot, so there's no point in "prolonging" their suffering. However, Caitie has seen a lot of great progress with her dogs, including this bunch.

She was called to a shop to remove a stray mama Basset Hound and her eight babies. Caitie believes mama probably went in there to have the babies; it was rainy in the area, and she was seeking shelter anywhere she could. Luckily, all seems relatively okay: they all have fleas, but she's doing pretty well with all of the babies and there are no signs of rejection. She even warmed up to Caitie!

Why You Should Rescue 'Medical' Dogs

As far as we know, this mama Basset Hound counts as a medically-needy rescue because she's only a few days postpartum. However, Caitie has rescued many other medically-needy dogs and found them loving homes! While it's hard work, it must be so rewarding to watch them grow, change, and move on to their forever homes!

A lot of people are scared to rescue medically-complex dogs (and other animals) because they're afraid of the prospect of a shorter lifespan and, more prominently, the bills associated with caring for them. The dogs that tend to sit for the longest in rescues are the ones with needs or issues, the older ones, or, unfortunately, the "ugly" ones.

It's understandable to be scared of the things you don't know, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try if you can. Medical needs are a spectrum, so it's actually not as hard to find a less-fortunate dog as you might think, especially if you're willing to foster. If you know you can provide safety and care to a dog with different needs, you should always try - you never know if anyone else will!

Costco's New Starter Chicken Coop Has People Going Wild

A new starter chicken coop, perfect for anyone looking to start their brood, was spotted at Costco, and it has everyone going wild.

In a quick video taken at Costco, we get a tip that there's a relatively affordable chicken coop that you can pick up right there.

Related: Chickens' Elaborate New Coop Is Nicer Than Some Humans' Houses

"I spotted a chicken house at Costco," the person in the video shares. "Now, if only I could get my HOA on board."

The chicken coop looks like a Zylina Walk-in Hen House, which has "two nesting bays, a free-range door, and a PVC roof."

It's also a decent-sized chicken coop, "about six and a/2 feet long and 5 feet 11 inches tall. It is so cute," the video explains.

In the comments, people were very excited about this item at Costco, but others had something else to say.

"Might be worth it for those that don't know how to build a coup," one person wrote.

"It's only good for one chicken," someone else added.

"Maybe if you were only planning on having one and a half chickens," joked another.

But others said this coop is too small for chickens, but it might work for something else.

One viewer suggested "Or a catio," which prompted other viewers to agree that it was "a good idea."

Another person suggested this could be used as a playpen for bunnies.

What to Consider Before Getting Your Own Chickens

Raising chickens involves a lot, and it can seem overwhelming at first because there is so much information to sort through, but start small with the very basics.

According to Almanac, before you get chickens, you need to check your local ordinances to make sure you're allowed to keep chickens in your area.

You also need to make sure you have enough space. "A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple henhouse can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there!

Another big point to consider after checking that you have enough space is to make sure you can afford to care for your chickens.

"Chickens need food (and water) daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag at my co-op, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed," Almanac explains. "How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens that you have."

And, of course, you must ensure you have enough time to care for your chickens. You will need to have time to clean the coop and monitor your chickens for any health issues. Plus, since they're chickens, a big time focus will be collecting eggs.

"Hens will lay eggs through spring and summer and into the fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight," Almana shares. "Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day."

Monkey Sets Up Shop in Robert Irwin's Hotel Room and His Response Is Perfect

5 hours 26 min ago

Going on vacation to a foreign place almost always means running into at least one animal that makes you question everything you know about life. For Maine, it's our crazy pigeons. Florida has those little lizards that are, somehow, not afraid of anything. South Africa, apparently, has monkeys that will walk into your hotel room like they own the place.

Robert Irwin learned this lesson the hard way on Tuesday, May 7th. After a hard day spent exploring, he just wanted to relax - but the monkey had other plans:

@robertirwin

This is why you lock your doors in South Africa…😂

♬ original sound - Robert Irwin

There are many possible reasons why this guy made his way into this hotel room. My favorite, as well as a lot of people in the comments', was that he heard that the Robert Irwin was staying there and needed to check it out for himself. Personal space, dude!

Related: Robert Irwin Officially Has a Species Named After Him and It’s Really Cool

Robert has been in South Africa for a little while doing some work with the South African Wildlife Rescue. Across the ocean back home at the Australia Zoo, his own conservation efforts have made him "famous," and his father's legacy has given him a platform to build on. During his time in South Africa so far, he's seen many different animals and been able to offer a lot of good advice!

When he's not doing all of that, though, he's like the rest of us - he wants to chill. Which, when you're in a beautiful hotel room in a beautiful country, is not hard... unless there's a monkey in your room. Then it gets tough. Instead of freaking out like most of us would, he only had one message: "this is why you lock your doors."

Can Monkeys Unlock Doors?

As some of the only animals with thumbs, monkeys can do a lot of things other animals can't. They can hold things properly, turn things, and they're great thieves, that is, if they can get in.

Monkeys can absolutely pick locks, and they actually enjoy doing so. There are plenty of reports of monkeys and apes alike picking locks and escaping from zoos or cages. A monkey who frequents a hotel like this has probably learned that the locks are either easy to pick or that the doors don't lock automatically and all they have to do is turn the knob - another thing they are perfectly capable of. While the front door of a hotel room typically locks automatically, balcony or patio doors are often a different story.

Luckily, this monkey was in good hands, and Robert was probably very calm and collected while he shooed it away. I wonder if he'll turn back up!

Amazon's Bestselling Pooper Scooper With 66,000+ Perfect Ratings Is on Sale for $18 — but Not for Long

6 hours 43 min ago

Instead of bending over to pick up feces with your hands and a plastic bag, follow suit with tens of thousands of shoppers and invest in the Arm & Hammer Pooper Scooper.

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

This no. 1 bestseller is currently on sale for nearly 50% off and only costs $18 for the remainder of Amazon Pet Day. The annual two-day sale ends tonight, so there's no time to waste to add one of these handy gadgets to your cart because there's no telling when it will be discounted again. Plus, if you order now, it can arrive as soon as tomorrow, which means you can have a clean yard just in time for weekend festivities.

This pooper scooper features a 27-inch extended claw with teeth that works on a variety of surfaces and allows owners to pick up messes without having to bend over or get on their hands and knees. Not to mention it keeps you away from the stench. All you need is one free hand and a waste basket. Simply pull the trigger on the handle to open the claw, scoop up the poop, and dispose of it in the trash or a collection bucket — no plastic bags required.

Its durable design is made of heavy-duty plastic and it can stand upright on its own for easy and convenient storage. As long as it's stored out of the elements in a shed or garage, it should last for years to come. If you notice any build-up accumulating over time, we recommend rinsing it down with a hose or using disposable gloves and disinfecting wipes.

More than 66,000 shoppers have given this tool a five-star rating and over 2,000 have sold in the past 30 days. One reviewer is wondering why they waited so long to buy one because they "picked up a week's worth of 'business' in about five minutes" after the first use.

"It makes cleaning up the dog poop around the yard so much easier," another shopper wrote. "Sturdy and holds a lot. I can clean the whole yard and only empty this thing twice. I should have bought this sooner, it would've saved my back and saved a lot of time."

If there's one thing every dog parent needs to buy during the Amazon Pet Day event, it's the Arm & Hammer Pooper Scooper while it's on sale for only $18. You can thank us later.

Maine Coon Kitten Tries His First 'Pup Cup' and Fails Miserably

7 hours 11 min ago

Despite what the name might indicate, Pup Cups are not just for dogs. Everyone deserves a sweet treat every now and then, including animals (as long as it's safe for them to eat, of course). More and more, it seems like cats are getting the chance to take part in a time honored tradition that was once reserved for dogs only: the little cup of whipped cream that many coffee shops hand out to pups who join their humans on their coffee run. As it turns out, kitties love them, too!

That doesn't mean that every cat (or dog for that matter) is going to understand the hype right away, though — or even how to consume their treat. However, watching them try to figure it out is pretty cute, as we can see in the TikTok video below.

@meatballthemainec

Meatball’s first #pupcup . He… failed so hard. #mainecoonkitten #mainecoonsoftiktok #cat

♬ Starbucks Girl - Lupi

In a TikTok video shared on Tuesday, May 7, on the adorable account dedicated to a very cute Maine Coon cat named Meatball, we get to see his first experience with a Starbucks Pup Cup... and even though we've seen other cats chow down in a big way, this kitty didn't quite get it.

In the very beginning of the video, we can see Meatball kind of sampling a little bit, but it seems like he thought it was something he should play with, rather than something he could eat. Instead of licking the whipped cream out of the cup, he was sticking his paws in it and trying to figure out exactly what it was that his mom presented him with.

So yes, very cute, but also not really getting the point of the Pup Cup at all. LOL!

This is just his first experience, though — I'm sure Meatball will get a chance to try again in the future. Plus, he's still a kitten; he's got plenty of time to learn about these things!

Where To Get a Pup Cup

It's not just Starbucks where pet parents can get a Pup Cup for their dogs and cats for free — some local coffee shops will also offer them. But what about chains?

According to this website, plenty of them do the whole Pup Cup thing. That includes Dutch Bros. and Caribou Coffee. At Dunkin', you can ask for a free Munchkin for your dog, or a Puppy Latte, which is their version of a Pup Cup. If you live near Tim Horton's, ask for a Timbit for your dog; they have sugar-free, plain ones.

Many ice cream shops will hand over free vanilla ice cream for pets, too, including Dairy Queen and Baskin Robbins, and so will McDonalds and Sonic! Plus, if you stop by Chick-fil-A, they will happy supply dog treats to your four-legged passenger.

As it turns out, plenty of establishments love treating our pets as much as we do!

Great Pyrenees Takes Over 'Mom Role' For an Abandoned Baby Goat Like a True Guardian

7 hours 25 min ago

Livestock guardian dogs will not hesitate to step up and protect any and all animals on their farm. It's their job, especially when it comes to the most vulnerable members of the herd: the babies and the elders. Without their guardians to protect them, who knows what might come for them?

Recently, we got to get a glimpse into what it looks like when a rejected baby goat gets taken under a guardian's wing. She didn't mind that he wasn't hers; all she knew was that he needed protection. You have to see it:

@bristolloveslucy

Clover is so thankful for Bristol and her role as a livestock guardian dog…he’s not the only one♥️ #greatpyrenees #livestockguardiandog #babygoats #greatpyreneesoftiktok #livestockguardiandogsoftiktok #babygoatsoftiktok

♬ More Than a Feeling - Boston

Bristol is one of the best livestock guardian dogs I've ever seen. Clover and the rest of the family is very lucky to have her!

Related: Livestock Guardian Dog Taking Over Litter of Kittens Really Shows off His Soft Side

Bristol is a Great Pyrenees, and she is the only livestock guardian dog on this farm. It's relatively small, just a hobby farm with a few goats, some barn cats, and a few hounds thrown in for good measure. As the sole protector of the farm, Bristol has a lot on her plate, including being a mom. She's had no puppies of her own, but that's no matter; she's been a mom to several baby goats. After they've been rejected by their mother, animals tend to wander aimlessly, and they'd die if not found in time.

Clover, the rejected baby goat, was born on February 24th of this year. At first, his farm-mom says, everything was alright, but his mom ended up rejecting him in the night. The reason is unclear, but she was getting aggressive toward the baby, so they decided to remove him from her care completely. As of the latest update, his mom still wanted nothing to do with him, but you know who cared?

Bristol.

Animals Foster Different Species All the Time

We've all heard the stories. A litter of kittens taken in by a dog, a litter of puppies taken in by a cat, it happens all the time, and it's amazing every time. When two animals are raised together, they form a strong bond, not unlike siblings. So when one of them rejects their young (or even if they don't), they step in to care for them. It's purely instinctual.

Cross-fostering is also common in breeders: if two animals gave birth at the same time and one litter is larger than the other, they'll sometimes take a couple of animals from one litter and give it to the other. It helps prevent the new mom from becoming overwhelmed!

Bristol's entire job is to protect the baby goats. She doesn't care whose mother is who; all she sees is a tiny baby goat who needs her protection. She's apparently fostered two before him, and she'll continue to do so long after he's grown. What a great mom!

Maine Coon Cat's Fluffy Tail Transformation Has People Stunned

8 hours 26 min ago

If you've ever been in the presence of a particularly fluffy cat, you know how amazing their tail is. It honestly seems to defy gravity - it's so perfect! Fluffy all the way around, and often sticking straight up. If my hair could look as nice as a fluffy cat's tail every day, I'd be a happy girl!

But that doesn't just happen overnight; it takes time for a cat to grow that much beautiful fur. However, once they've got it all, the tail transforms quite nicely. Just look at this video from Tuesday, May 7th:

@oliver_mainecoon

♬ ONCE THERE WAS A WAYYYYYY - WOAHHH

Maine Coon and orange? Oliver knows the way to my heart. He's so beautiful, even without that majestic tail!

Related: Maine Coon Cat Instantly Transforms From Kitten to Majestic King in Seconds

Oliver is still just a kitten, though you might not have been able to tell from his sheer size. Without the tail fluff, he's pretty comparable to a normal cat, but once that thing fluffs up? He's done for.

Being that he's orange, Oliver is a boy, and he's also very fun to watch. His mom claims there's not a thought behind his eyes, though there is a lot of love in his heart, and that sentiment rings true for Maine Coon and orange cat parents alike. He's affectionate, impulsive, fluffy as can be, and very curious.

Even though he's still a kitten, Maine Coon cats tend to grow like weeds for the first 9-ish months of their lives. In those nine months, they can get up to 20 inches long and weigh well into the teens. Over they next three years or so, they continue to grow, but it's slower and less noticeable. Essentially, you'll basically know what your Maine Coon will look like full-grown at about a year old.

A Cat's Tail is a Good Health Indicator

People say that you can tell a lot about a person's health by looking at their hair, and the same is true about a cat's tail. Whether you've got a smooth-tailed cat or a cat whose tail looks like a whole separate animal, you can look at it for a clue about how they're feeling. A healthy cat's tail will generally be:

  1. Glossy
  2. Evenly coated in fur
  3. Moving freely

A cat's tail that is dull, patchy, or bent awkwardly warrants a second look. Hair loss and a lack of shine could be indicative of parasites, fleas, or vitamin deficiencies. If your cat's tail is bent awkwardly and they seem unable to move it, it might be broken. Though it's uncommon, it is possible!

Australian Shepherd Picks 'Wrong Cat to Mess With' and Instantly Regrets It

9 hours 11 min ago

The dynamic between dog and cat siblings is always very entertaining to watch. In my house, I get to see both sides of the coin. My dog and one of my cats have been BFFs since the day I brought that puppy home; they're always snuggling with each other, playing together, and following each other around the house. But when it comes to my dog and the other cat, their relationship couldn't be more opposite — and even though my dog knows that she will get hissed at and bopped by him, she antagonizes him every single day anyway.

Apparently, she's not the only dog in the world who has the "instigator" gene. The one in this TikTok video does too, and it looks like she's going to learn the hard way that if she messes with the cat, she'll get the claws.

In this video recently shared by @silvertheaussie on TikTok, we can see that a very mischievous Australian Shepherd named Silver is chasing down a cat named Timber inside their house, and Timber very much wants to be left alone. But Silver doesn't care — she's going to bark at Timber anyway!

"She thinks he's safe because she's in the tunnel, she usually never bothers Timber but she wanted to press her luck this morning I guess," wrote Silver's mom in the video.

Silver barked for awhile, but finally, Timber had enough. The cat bolted out of the tunnel and immediately chased after his sister, who offered up a few paw slaps when he finally caught up with her.

After it was clear that Timber had won the fight, Silver was immediately sulking as he walked away (which was probably what he should have done in the first place).

What to Do If Your Dog and Cat Don't Get Along

Not all cat/dog households live in peace — in fact, I'm willing to bet there are a lot out there that are experiencing a very Timber and Silver dynamic. But all hope isn't lost! If your cat and dog can't agree to disagree and ignore each other, there are a few things you can try before relegating yourself to refereeing their fights forever.

It's a good idea to make sure that your cat has a safe space where they can go to escape the dog, and cat trees can be a bonus since they can go up high, where the dog can't reach them, and observe from above until they feel more comfortable interacting closely.

“I would encourage calm, relaxed behavior around each other — as long as both species feel safe at all times, and are calm and relaxed, a friendship may well develop from that,” animal behaviorist Rosie Bescoby told Inverse.

If things just aren't getting any better, don't be afraid to ask your vet for professional help. It's worth it to have harmony in your home!

Chihuahua Mix Foster's 'First Peaceful Sleep' Outside Shelter Is Touching Hearts

10 hours 11 min ago

Many parents will always wonder about their dogs' stories from the time before they were adopted, but sometimes, those stories are actually really sad. Some dogs were homeless or part of tragic situations that are too heartbreaking to think about before they were taken in by a shelter, and that's what makes those who are willing to step up and foster animals so necessary in this world. As they wait for their forever homes, dogs and cats can have a comfy place to land, with plenty of care and attention they just wouldn't be getting at animal control or in a shelter.

But knowing how tough their lives have been before they reach their foster parents can make the sweet moments they have once they know they're safe all the more special, as we can see in this TikTok video. (Warning: You may shed a tear.)

On Monday, May 6, foster mom Isabel Klee shared the moment that her foster dog, who is a Chihuahua mix, finally realized that she was able to relax and actually get some rest.

Here, we can see her cuddled up on her foster dad's chest, and it looked like she was feeling so comfortable and secure as she was finally able to get some peaceful sleep.

"What a privilege it is to witness her healing," Isabel wrote in her caption.

That's exactly what's happening here. Whatever this pup has been through before she came to her temporary family couldn't have been easy, but they're helping her learn that there are kind people in the world who she can trust — and the hard work they're putting in will prepare her for her forever home and family whenever they might find her. In the meantime, it definitely looks like this little lady is in great hands.

More About Hallie, Their Foster Dog

These two are experienced in the fostering department and have been documenting Hallie's journey with them since they picked her up just a few days ago from Muddy Paws Rescue in NYC.

She first showed what it was like to pick Hallie up from the rescue. Right away, it seemed like she could tell that these were good people — her little tail was wagging from the jump! The excitement continued once they got home and Hallie got to meet their dog, Simon, who was so gentle around his new friend!

It hasn't all been easy for Hallie so far; in another video, Isabel explained that she had a cold when they picked her up, so she's been coughing a lot at night. But it certainly does seem like she's been getting plenty of love!

Whoever ends up adopting Hallie will be so lucky. What a precious pup.

German Shepherd & Golden Retriever Are the Ultimate 'Nannies' to Tiny Kittens

A German Shepherd and Golden Retriever pair are taking care of tiny kittens, and they prove that they're perfect "nannies."

On May 4, 2024, TikTok user Leo Tiger Nala (@leo.tiger.nala) shared a video of the sweet dogs caring for tiny kittens. Take a look!

In a minute-long clip, we meet two Golden Retrievers, a German Shepherd, and a litter of baby kittens.

While it may be unexpected, the big dogs took to the tiny kittens so well and have become their unofficial nannies.

The nannies make sure the tiny kittens have enough toys to play with, and they work together when they need to ensure the tiny kittens are taking a nap; they play lullabies to help them drift off to sleep, and the dog nannies snap photos when the kittens do anything cute or special.

"Dog nannies come to the rescue," the video's caption reads. In the comment section, people were taken by the sweet dogs' gentle love for the kittens.

"The dogs are the best babysitters. Love how much they care about the babies," one TikTok viewer wrote.

Someone said, "It’s a tough job being a hardworking nanny dog in this economy."

"Made my day! What sweet doggo kitty sitters," added another.

"The doggos' worried eyebrows!" a viewer noticed.

"Such a good, helpful doggie," shared another.

How to Introduce Your Dog to a New Kitten

These dogs have a very special bond with these kittens, and it's absolutely adorable to see. They clearly want to protect the tiny kittens, and they're doing such a great job doing so.

But if you're hoping to introduce your dog to a new kitten, they might not take to him so quickly. But there are some steps you can take to help the transition and meeting go a lot easier.

PetSecure offers several suggestions to help your dog bond with a new kitten and make the transition much easier for everyone.

"Make a point of giving your dog lots of attention and praise when you bring your new kitten home to show that they’re not going to be a threat to your affection," the site suggests. "And remember, dogs can very easily hurt or even kill a kitten, so never leave them alone together in those early days."

You should let the dog and kitten get used to the scents of the other, which can be done through a door while still keeping the two separate.

"Swap their blankets or a put a towels with their scents on it in each other’s bed. This will help them pick up the scent and become comfortable around it before coming into contact," Pet Secure adds.

"You can also introduce each animal to the other’s space (when they’re not there), and let them have a good sniff. Just remember not to let your dog eat your kitten’s food or scratch in their litter box."

The two will likely eventually get along or at least tolerate each other. But the best goal and option is to take your time introducing them.

Husky Throws On-Point Toddler-Style Tantrum When It's Time to Leave Dog Area

11 hours 11 min ago

As someone who is raising both a toddler and a dog at the same time, I can confirm that they have a lot of similarities. They both want 100% of your attention 100% of the time, they are both always looking for snacks (especially ones that you are trying to eat), and they really, really don't ever want to stop having fun to do anything else. When it's time to go inside after playing in the backyard, neither of them really want to go in... and if we happen to be at a park, forget it. It's like pulling teeth to get those two into the car!

If this sounds like your dog, you aren't alone. There are plenty other dogs out there just like this... but the one in this TikTok video might be taking his stubbornness to new extremes!

@siberianderpskies

I, an idiot, wanted dogs with big personalities. 🐺🫠😮‍💨 #siberianderpskies #siberianhusky #siberianhuskies #husky #huskies #dogsoftiktok #huskiesoftiktok

♬ original sound - Siberian Derpskies

On Monday, May 6, @siberianderpskies shared this footage of his Siberian Husky throwing a full toddler-sized tantrum in a field at the park they were visiting, simply because he wasn't ready to leave (and if he's anything like my dog, there probably would never come a time when he was ready to leave).

"The closer to the parking lot we get, the frequency and intensity of the tantrums increases," the dog's dad explains in the background of the video as his pup, whose name is Archer, rolls around in the grass.

Then, you realize there are multiple Huskies in the video, and neither of them want to go home! This guy really has his work cut out for him.

Leia was the first to snap, and once her dad got her in the car, he went back to try and get Archer to follow. But rather than join his sister in the car, he took off in the opposite direction... and when Leia saw more fun was being had, she got out of the car and ran, too!

Sigh... the life of a dog parent.

Do Huskies Really Throw Tantrums?

In the caption of the video, Archer and Leia's dad wrote that he wanted dogs with "big personalities," and that's exactly what he got, because Huskies tend to be known as major drama queens.

According to Fi, there are a few signs of a Husky tantrum coming on, which include howling, crying sounds, ignoring their humans, growling, and even destroying any objects that might be around at the time. Yep, this is sounding more and more like a human toddler by the minute.

These can be kept at bay by laying a good training foundation with them as soon as you adopt them (and there's no shame in bringing a professional in if you need to). When the tantrums happen, try to keep track of what's going on so you can see if their tantrums have any factors in common that you can control and try to fix before next time. Is it the time of day? Are they hungry, tired, or bored?

And above all else, stay calm. If you're chill, they're more likely to calm down and join you.

Black Cat Rolls Around in Pure Delight When Mom Gives Her 'Concrete Time'

11 hours 56 min ago

A black cat beams with pure joy and delight when their mom gives them concrete time, and yes, it is exactly as it sounds.

On April 24, 2024, TikTok user Rinehart Queen (@rinehartqueen) shared a video of her cat, who has a very favorite thing they love to do outside. Take a look!

In a minute-and-a-half-long video, we meet a black cat named Stinky, who loves to go outside for only one reason.

Related: Black Cat Climbing Bunk Bed Ladder Like a Human Has Some Serious Skills

Stinky loves concrete. Like the sidewalk kind of concrete, and we get to see that play out in this cute video.

In the clip, Sinky's mom asks her if she wants to go have some "concrete time." She immediately meows, and they start making their way to the door.

Mom keeps asking Stinky if she wants to play on the concrete outside, and she gets excited.

"Watch how she reacts to being put on concrete," the text on the video reads.

Sure enough, Stinky does love concrete time, and you can see that the second she gets her paws down on the concrete, she immediately lies down on it and starts to roll on her back.

She looks like the happiest cat on the planet as she rolls around on the concrete, scratching her back and enjoying whatever she gets from the ground.

"I love giving stinky concrete time," the video's caption reads.

In the comments, people can't get enough of the cute cat's obsession with rolling around on the concrete outside.

"Can we have the back story of this cat, please? Concrete cat is my new love interest," one person asked.

"Why do cats love concrete so much," another asked.

"What is it with concrete?!" someone else wondered.

Another person shared: "I saw someone the other day who bought a single patio stone to put inside for their cat. She'd like that.

"Wow, she loves it," added another.

Why Do Cats Like Concrete?

Reading the comments, it's clear that this cute cat isn't the only cat who loves concrete. But why? Is this really a thing for cats? Apparently, yes.

"Cats are known for their quirky behaviors and love of throwing themselves down in sunny spots indoors or out," Catster writes. "But have you ever wondered why your cat enjoys rolling around on rough, scratchy surfaces like concrete?"

According to Catster, there are several reasons why a cat loves to roll on concrete. One is that the material is often cool to the touch, which feels good on a hot day. However, if the day has direct sunlight, the concrete could also provide heat to your cat.

Another reason could be that your cat is trying to mark its territory with its scent, which cats love to do. "Other cats will take notice of this scent mark. If they happen to be in the same area, they will know that another cat has already claimed it as their own," Catster writes.

Whatever the reason, it's adorable to see and we love to watch any cat be able to do something that makes them this happy.

Are Pecans Safe for Dogs? What a Vet Wants Pet Parents To Know

13 hours 21 min ago

Slightly sweet and buttery, pecans make a delicious snack all by themselves. Pecan pie? *Chef's kiss* It begs the question, however: Can dogs eat pecans?

Letting our furry friends partake in family meals and snacks can be fun by slipping them a bit of what you're having. However, veterinarians say it's important to understand which foods are on the table and which are better left off of it (figuratively speaking).

"Giving human foods to our dogs can be a fun way to bond with them and reward them during training, so it is important to know which human foods are safe for them and which are to be avoided," says Dr. Hannah Hart, DVM, a veterinarian at Chewy. "Knowing which are safe and which are toxic is also helpful so that we can take extra precautions when working with toxic foods to prevent our dogs from being exposed."

And if your dog accidentally gets exposed to toxic food, you'll want to know what experts recommend doing next.

"Knowing which ones are more problematic than others can help us determine when to contact a veterinarian or a pet poison control hotline like Pet Poison Helpline or the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center," Dr. Hart says.

What about pecans, specifically? Are they safe for dogs? Can a dog have a bit of pecan pie on Thanksgiving? It's a bit complicated. Here's what Dr. Hart wants pet parents to know before giving a pup pecans.

Related: OK, Let’s Talk Dogs and Peanuts and if the ‘Treat’ Is Actually Safe—Here’s Everything Vets Want You To Know

Are Pecans Bad for Dogs?

"Pecans are not considered toxic," Dr. Hart says. However, there's a but. "Pecans contain a lot of fat, and moldy pecans can contact mycotoxins from fungus that can make dogs sick," she continues. "Too much fat can cause vomiting, diarrhea and inflammation of the pancreas, [known as] pancreatitis, which is a serious condition."

Unfortunately, the potential health risks for dogs who consume pecans don't stop there.

"Pecans can also present a choking hazard in smaller dogs and dogs who do not chew them thoroughly before swallowing, and shell material can present a risk of obstruction in the digestive tract," Dr. Hart adds.

In other words, pecans aren't toxic but also aren't the best human food to give a dog as a treat.

Can Dogs Eat Pecan Pie?

It's not the best idea—no matter how irresistible your dog's pleading eyes may be as you eat this also-irresistible quintessential holiday dessert. "Dogs should not be allowed to eat pecan pie. While the ingredients themselves may not be toxic, too much fat and sugar in the diet can lead to vomiting, diarrhea and pancreatitis, which can potentially be serious and even life-threatening," Dr. Hart explains.

The calories don't help.

"Pecan pie is also high in calories, and too many calories per day can predispose dogs to obesity, which in itself can lead to issues like arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes and reduced quality of life," she says.

What Happens if My Dog Eats Pecans?

Try as you might, your dog might get into a bag of pecans or gobble up one you dropped on the floor. The good news is that pecans aren't typically toxic, and one likely won't hurt. However, you might notice some not-fun side effects, especially if your dog consumes several pecans. Dr. Hart says these side effects may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Low appetite
  • Stomach pain
  • Pacing
  • Panting
  • Drooling

While all of the above can be a flag that your dog has a tummy ache, pay attention to body language and other unexpected behavioral cues.

"Stomach pain can present as an arched back, digging into the floor or repeated bowing to the 'pray' posture," Dr. Hart explains.

Also, you'll want to be aware of signs that pecan bits got stuck in the throat. Dr. Hart says those symptoms include:

  • Coughing
  • Hacking
  • Labored, fast or shallow breathing

Related: Can Dogs Eat Bananas? Experts Weigh in on Whether This Fruit Is Healthy for Pups

What To Do if My Dog Eats Pecans

You may not need to do anything if your dog ate pecans. "If your dog eats just one pecan off the floor, he or she may be OK," Dr. Hart says. "However, if your dog has eaten a significant number of pecans, it may be best to have him or her seen in person by a veterinarian as soon as possible, especially if the pecans were swallowed whole or with shell pieces."

Regardless of how many pecans your dog got their paws on, you'll want to monitor for symptoms the nuts aren't agreeing with them. These flags include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gagging
  • Coughing
  • Drooling
  • Stomach pain
  • Panting
  • Pacing.

"If any of these signs develop, it is best to have them seen in person right away for treatment," Dr. Hart says.

How Many Pecans Can Hurt a Dog?

It depends on the dog, especially their size. "A larger dog may be able to safely eat a few pecans and be OK, while one or two pecans swallowed whole may present a risk of obstruction to a small-breed dog like a Chihuahua," Dr. Hart says.

She adds that just a few chewed and digested pecans may trigger GI discomfort, vomiting and diarrhea in a smaller dog.

That said, food reactions can be really dog-specific (just like with humans), so it's best to monitor for symptoms of discomfort and distress regardless of a dog's size.

Can a Dog Die from Eating Pecans?

Generally, consuming pecans isn't deadly, and the nuts aren't considered toxic. "Most of the time, eating pecans will not be life-threatening to a dog," Dr. Hart says. "He or she may experience some digestive upset that requires treatment, but he or she should recover in time."

However, some dogs may experience severe reactions.

"In some extreme cases, such as ingesting many pecans or whole pecans with shells, the dog may develop life-threatening pancreatitis from too much fat or a life-threatening intestinal blockage from the shell material in its digestive tract," Dr. Hart explains.

If in doubt, call your pup's vet.

What Nuts Are Toxic to Dogs?

Pecans generally aren't toxic to dogs, but some nuts are, including black walnuts and macadamia nuts.

"People do not commonly eat black walnuts, but they may fall from trees that are growing in residential areas, so they are an important risk to be aware of," Dr. Hart says. "Ingesting black walnuts and macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, tremors and shaking, muscle weakness, high body temperature and seizures in dogs."

On the flip side, other nuts aren't considered toxic to dogs.

"[Pecans], almonds, English walnuts, cashews and pistachios are all nontoxic to dogs," Dr. Hart explains.

"Bird's incredible heartfelt reacton when owner comes home," the text on the screen reads.

The sweet bird then tells her mom how much she missed her when she was gone.

"I missed you," she shared with her. "I love you."

The smart bird blows kisses to her mama, asks about her day and if she was in the car. He asks her if she loves her, and sings some pretty melody whistle songs.

"I love you so pretty girl," she tells her next and blows more kisses to her "bubba."

In the comment section, people had fun listening to Cosmo talk to her mama and boop her own beak at one point.

"She’s so cute. I love how she answers what you're talking about," one viewer shared.

Another viewer shared, "Cosmo was my first love on here. She's beyond smart. She was worried you were sore. It was precious."

"Awwww, my heart just melted," someone else wrote.

"I wish my dogs said 'I missed you' when I got home," another viewer wrote. "I mean, they do. But not verbally. And that's what I want."

Another TikTok viewer shared, "The fact that we just accept that parrots can talk. They're so amazing."

Someone else added, "Aw, how much reassurance she loves; it shows how bonded you are and how sensitive these birds are."

African Gray Parrots Are Really Good at Speaking

There are many different parrot species, but the African Grey Parrot is regarded as the smartest and best-talking bird in the world, according to Port Jefferson Animal Hospital.

They're best known here for being exceptional at understanding and imitating human speech and can have an impressive vocabulary.

"Their ability to learn new words will be determined by their relationship with their owner, as they tend to attach to only one person," the vets explain.

"They learn from the various types of voices that surround them the most, and they are intelligent enough to make different sounds to frighten off predators. Providing lots of treats as they learn will help them improve their communication skills quickly."

They're not only really incredible human mimickers, though. They can mimic a lot of different sounds and animals.

These impressive birds can mimic "a wide variety of the sounds they hear," even in the wild.

"Two Greys were recorded while roosting in Zaire, and researchers reported that they had a repertoire of over 200 different sounds, including nine imitations of other wild bird songs and one of a bat," Animalia writes.

Border Collie Trying to 'Blend in' With Big Anatolian Shepherds Is Too Funny to Miss

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 2:00pm

If you grew up with an older sibling, you're not immune to the phase of wanting to be just like them. It's only natural: they seem so much cooler and smarter than you. The magic eventually fades away and then starts the, "actually, I'm 100% better than you," phase.

Apparently, humans aren't the only ones who feel that way when it comes to their older siblings. As of Monday, May 6th, one farm mom was officially convinced that her Border Collie, Pete, wanted to be just like his siblings:

Raventree Ranch is one of the best farm families on TikTok. Their dogs work so well together, even though they misunderstand the assignment sometimes...

Related: Border Collie 'Watches Over' His Flock of Cats Like a True Herding Dog

Pete is one of a few Border Collies on the ranch, and he lives among a whole horde of livestock and their guardians. Their livestock guardians are all Anatolian Shepherds, and they have three: Bo, Lily, and Judge. The Border Collie squad consists of Dex, June, Pete, and Steam, and they all love to hang out together when they're not busy keeping the herd in check.

Pete, apparently, really wants to be an Anatolian Shepherd - or, maybe, he thinks he is one. They serve different purposes, so Pete realistically has no idea how to do their job, but he tries his best. At least he looks cute trying!

Farm Dogs Need to Work Together

Bo, Lily, Judge, Pete, Dex, June, and Steam all need to work together to make the farm run smoothly, and you best believe they do. The Anatolian Shepherds have a little more freedom at night than the Border Collies do; they get kenneled at night once they've herded the whole flock into the barns for the night. They were bred to herd, not to defend.

However, without Border Collies to keep the animals herded en masse, the Anatolian Shepherds would have a very hard time keeping everyone protected. Though they do have some herding skills, it's not their strong suit. Anatolian Shepherds also tend to bond better to the animals, since they spend more time with them than the Border Collies would. For the most part, the Border Collies are kept out of the way - otherwise, they may trip up the livestock guardians, and no one wants that.

Whether you want to have a herder and a guardian will depend on a lot of factors, including the size of the farm. For a teeny tiny hobby farm, you might not need it, whereas an expansive farm with dozens of animals will benefit greatly. And so will we, since we get to watch!
