The #1 Way to Stop Your Cat From Scratching the Furniture, According to Experts

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 4:42am

If there’s one thing a cat will do, it’s scratch. For your feline friend, it doesn’t matter if it’s a cat tree or a scratching post; they’ll enjoy clawing at anything they can get their paws on. Unfortunately for you, that may also mean they love to scratch your furniture, despite your best attempts to deter them otherwise.

While it's easy as a cat parent to get frustrated when your cat keeps scratching up the couch, it's important to understand that they aren't doing it out of spite or stubbornness. Sometimes, scratching is simply a response to stress, insecurity or a need for more stimulation.

Although there are certainly cats out there who love to cause a little chaos, scratching may also be a signal to you that something is missing from their environment. Unfortunately, your cat can't tell you directly what they need (we wish), so these behaviors are their way of communicating that they may require more enrichment, a new outlet or a change in their play space.

That said, it's still exhausting to deal with shredded furniture regularly. Instead of resigning yourself to damaged home pieces or losing your patience with your feline friend, there's a smarter solution.

We spoke to experts to learn how to stop a cat from scratching furniture, a simple diversion tactic to redirect their scratching instincts, how to protect your furniture and how to still keep your kitty happy.

The Biological Reason Your Cat Ruins the Couch

Caleb Woods/Unsplash

While it might seem like your cat is purposely trying to test your limits, scratching is entirely normal behavior for them.

"Cats scratch for several reasons," says Dr. Joy Myers, a veterinarian at Vetster. "Scratching helps maintain the claws by removing worn outer layers, stretches muscles and tendons, and serves as an important form of visual and scent communication. Specialized scent glands in the paws leave behind chemical signals, while the visible marks themselves create a lasting message. From the cat's perspective, scratching is a natural and healthy behavior, not an act of spite or revenge."

Reframing how you think about your cat's scratching is the first step toward understanding what they need and how to redirect that behavior away from your sofa.

Marking Territory and Shedding Claws: Why You Can’t (and Shouldn't) Stop the Urge

Srinivasan Venkataraman/Unsplash

Scratching is a natural habit for cats, and there's no stopping it. Despite the destruction it may bring, it's simply another normal feline behavior to get used to, and rather than trying to eliminate it, redirection is the smarter move to make.

Dr. Myers notes that current feline medicine and behavioral guidelines encourage cat parents to focus on finding the root cause of destructive scratching rather than punishing it. Punishment is not only ineffective, but it can also increase stress and fear in your cat. The most successful outcomes come from cat parents who reward good scratching behavior instead of shaming their pets for acting on instinct.

Why Your Cat Chose the Armrest Instead of the Carpet

Tim Umphreys/Unsplash

Even if your home is stocked with cat trees and scratching posts, your cat may still make a beeline for the armrest. So, what gives?

"From the cat's perspective, the couch may simply be the better scratching surface," Dr. Myers says. "Cats have preferences for texture, stability, height and location. A flimsy post hidden in a spare bedroom has a hard time competing with a sturdy upholstered armrest located right in the middle of family activity."

Having a scratching post or even carpet available doesn't automatically make it your cat's favorite spot—location and quality matter just as much.

The 'Redirection' Strategy: The #1 Expert-Backed Solution

Sies Kranen/Unsplash

The most effective way to protect your furniture is to give your cat a scratching option they actually want to use.

Dr. Myers recommends placing a new scratching surface close to the furniture being targeted, then rewarding your cat every time they use it. Cats respond far better to positive reinforcement than correction, so offering treats, praise, play or catnip when they scratch in the right spot will go a long way toward building a lasting habit.

Why the Secret to Saving Your Couch Is Actually a Better Post

Madalyn Cox/Unsplash

A new scratching post doesn't guarantee your cat will love it. As you may know, cats can be selective creatures, and certain features make a post significantly more appealing.

Dr. Myers recommends choosing a scratching surface that's sturdy enough to stay stable during use. For vertical scratchers, opt for something tall enough to allow your cat to fully extend their body. Horizontal scratchers are another popular option and can be placed in a second location to give your cat more variety.

Sisal, Wood or Cardboard? Choosing the Ultimate Texture

Tran Mau Tri Tam ✪/Unsplash

Just like people, cats have individual preferences when it comes to texture. Some gravitate toward sisal or wood, while others prefer softer, carpet-like materials. There's no universal answer, which is why Dr. Myers recommends observing your cat's behavior to figure out what they gravitate toward and what they ignore. Your cat's scratching habits may come down entirely to material preference.

Why Your Current Scratching Post Is Being Ignored

Romy Xu/Unsplash

Location is one of the most overlooked reasons a cat refuses their scratching post, but elevation plays a role too.

"One angle that often gets overlooked in the discussion around cat furniture is the importance of elevation and security," says Amy Leiker, founder and CEO of LoftyLoo. "Cats naturally seek out elevated spaces because being up high allows them to observe their surroundings, feel safer and establish territory. When those needs aren't met, cats may be more likely to use couches, armrests, shelving and other household furniture for climbing, scratching or resting."

Cat trees, perches and even cabinet tops tend to be preferred spots for this reason. If your current setup isn't providing the height or security your cat is looking for, they're unlikely to use it.

How to Make Your Furniture the Most Boring Thing in the Room

Elisa Kennemer/Unsplash

Deterring cats from furniture is rarely an overnight fix, but a few strategic changes may help tip the scales in your favor.

"Double-sided tape, furniture guards, plastic protectors or temporary texture changes can make furniture less appealing while the cat develops a preference for appropriate scratching surfaces," Dr. Myers says. "At the same time, owners should ensure scratching posts are stable, accessible and rewarding to use. The goal is not to punish the cat. The goal is to change which surface is most rewarding."

The Tin Foil Trick: Creating Texture Deterrents That Actually Work

Andrea Huls Pareja/Unsplash

Texture deterrents are another tool worth trying. Dr. Myers notes that many cats dislike aluminum foil and similar materials, making them useful for steering cats away from furniture while they adjust to using proper scratching surfaces.

That said, this approach should be temporary. The goal is to guide your cat's behavior, not create long-term stress or anxiety around certain surfaces.

The Declawing Reality: Why Vets Strongly Warn Against the Procedure

Jakub Żerdzicki/Unsplash

Declawing is not a decision veterinarians or animal behavior professionals take lightly. As Dr. Myers points out, declawing involves the surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe, which is the human equivalent of removing a fingertip at the last joint. While there are rare cases where the procedure is medically necessary, it is not considered an appropriate solution for furniture damage.

Cats scratching furniture is a frustrating but very common issue. While the impulse to correct or shame a cat for the behavior is understandable, it's important to remember that scratching is completely normal. The best path forward is finding a scratching surface your cat will genuinely enjoy and setting them up to succeed.

Golden Retriever Siblings Hold a 'Secret Conversation' and Clearly Know Something We Don't

Dogs are just better in pairs. Double the paws, double the dog hair, double the fun times.

TikTok user @goldenjedis frequently takes to social media to share the antics of their hilarious Golden Retrievers, Rey and Obi. Recently the Goldens were lounging on the porch together engaging in a very private convo, the likes of which we'll unfortunately never be able to fully know.

How Do Dogs Communicate With Each Other?

Dogs have multiple ways of communicating with each other that we've been able to study and learn about over the years. Their communication comes in various ways some of which being:

  • Scent is their most powerful sense and the primary way they take in information
  • Marking territory is a way to communicate with other dogs that a space belongs to them
  • Sniffing faces and rear ends is almost like the dog equivalent to a "handshake"
  • Pheromones can identify different emotions like anxiety, fear, or excitement
  • Body language tells other dogs how they're feeling
  • Tail height and activity level is another indicator of emotion
  • A dog's ear posture can also give an idea of how they're feeling
  • Barking, whining, and other vocalizations also assist with communication

These are just a handful of ways dogs specifically communicate with each other. Learning more from experts, or simply by observing your own pet is a great way to be in tune with what your dog is trying to express not only to you but to the world around them.

Impatient Swiss Mountain Dog Nails a Hop Into the Car Before Mom Can Even Open the Door

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 8:12pm

So many dogs love the car, and when they're heading to one of their favorite places? That's an extra sweet deal.

Riggs, a sweet Greater Swiss Mountain Dog in New England, is a huge fan of going to Grandpa's to get to go swimming. On a recent trip, Riggs was so amped for the journey he leapt into the car before his mom could even open the door.

Jumping skills? 10 out of 10. Excitement? Absolutely umatched.

View this post on Instagram

In the video, captioned "Pov: You're waiting on mom," Riggs can be seen bounding through the front seat window of the car, pumped to get going and on his way to Grandpa's for a dip. While Riggs' mom admits she wasn't thrilled with his methods, she conceeds that his just was pretty impressive.

Here's hoping they made it to the swim date in one piece!

A Greater Swiss Mountain Dog's Temperament

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, also known affectionately as a "Swissy" or a "GSMD" are gorgeous worker dogs that were originally bred in the Swiss Alps. Because of their size and stature some even call them a "poor man's horse." While they're a popular breed, they're slightly less well known than others like a Bernese Mountain Dog, for example.

As a breed, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are very enthusiastic, happy dogs who are very attached to their people and families. While they have been bred to be working dogs, GSMDs are actually relatively calm, mellow, non-reactive. These dogs are very much "velcro" pets who love being around their people.

From a training perspective, a Swissy can be on the stubborn side and a bit difficult to train. They need (and want!) a fair amount of exercise and love a task or a sanctioned activity. Consistency and routine are great things for these dogs and help them thrive.

Another thing to consider if you're curious about what it might be like to have a Swissy in your life is they have a pretty impressive vertical. Always something to consider, especially if you leave the windows of your car down.

Dachshund's Sweet Cuddle Sounds Are Melting Hearts Everywhere

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 7:20pm

Though we often see Lady, the Dachshund, living the most glamorous life with her influencer mom, sometimes the best moments are the simplest.

In this recent heartwarming video, the Dachshund is just having a sweet cuddle moment, complete with cute sounds.

They're having the sweetest love fest!

@abbybaffoe

Her sounds 🥹😂😭

♬ original sound - Abby Baffoe

It really is the cutest moment, and viewers can't get enough of Lady's sounds when Mom is loving up on her.

"OMG, does she always make those sweet noises?" one person asked.

Another commenter wrote, "And when you stop, she looks at you like, why did you stop?"

And then another viewer labeled the situation perfectly: "I feel like the lady has cuteness aggression toward you."

Related: Lady the Dachshund Takes on Paris Like a Travel Pro and It's Adorable

Why Do Some Dogs Make Little Sounds When They're Happy?

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dogs use vocalizations to communicate their emotions, including when they're happy.

Whines and growls actually communicate happiness, and it sounds like some of Lady's high-pitched whines are letting us know how happy she is when her Mom gives her a good old-fashioned cuddle session.

It's funny because dog whines are often associated with distress, but they can definitely also come out when the pup is happy and excited!

You have to know what to listen for when it comes to whining.

According to the AKC, a whine that represents happiness drops in pitch toward the end of the sound, while if the dog is in distress, the whine will go higher in pitch at the end.

A subtle but important difference!

Clearly, Lady is very content as she gets all the kisses from her mom.

And though she lives a very fancy life with her influencer mom that includes trips to Paris, hotel staycations, caviar tastings, and glamorous photo shoots, all this little Lady needs at the end of the day is some kisses and cuddles!

Pit Bull's Hopeful Smile in His Shelter Intake Photo Is Breaking Hearts Everywhere

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 6:10pm

Some dogs in shelters wait longer than others to be adopted. Reasons range from size, breed, health, age, and temperament. Potential pet parents often gravitate toward puppies, smaller dogs, and popular family dog mixes, where other fur babies are overlooked for what feels like forever.

Opossum is an adorable black-and-white Pit Bull at the Anderson County Paws shelter in South Carolina waiting to be chosen.

@jadecooperlife

UPDATE: ADOPTION PENDING 💚 He looked so happy in his intake photo.. Poor baby didn’t know. Someone give him a home! Located at Anderson County Paws in SC. UPDATE We want to give Opossum a special day out! Please consider donating to help make that happen $Linoushoney (Everything will be posted and shared with y’all.) Or donate directly to Anderson county PAWS to help all the pups! #AdoptDontShop #ShelterDog #RescueDog #DogTok #dogsoftiktok

♬ original sound - ☆ Madison ☆

In the TikTok from @jadecooperlife, Opossum stood sadly in his kennel and stared into the camera as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. The pretty Pittie previously posed for a picture when he first entered the shelter and literally had a huge smile on his face before realizing he was headed to a cage.

"He looked so happy in his intake photo — Poor baby didn’t know," the caption shared. "Someone give him a home!"

The beautiful image was part of Opossum's bio, which stated that the precious pooch has a "low" energy level, and gets along with kids and cats.

Followers fell in love with Opossum and his photogenic smile filled with hope. Many rallied to get the canine cutie adopted.

"He looks so cute and gentle," one noted.

"His intake picture, oh my goodness. Let’s get this precious boy adopted and bring that smile right back 10 fold!!" another raved.

"Low energy, good with cats and kids — someone better adopt this man immediately," a follower remarked.

"Someone pick up this sweet angel boy now," someone commented.

Great news! According to a recent update on the social media post, the friendly fur baby was adopted and heading to his forever home.

Why Pit Bulls Wait Longer to Find Homes

Hesitation to adopt a Pit Bull due to a negative stereotype still remains today. A previous study revealed that potential pet parents are less likely to adopt a dog if a shelter classes them as a Pit Bull. The breed is still perceived as more aggressive and less friendly than other breeds.

Pit Bulls gained the unfavorable stigma after the abuse and exploitation they endured in being trained for dog fighting. Despite years of advocacy debunking the many myths that surround the breed, Pit Bulls still have an unjustly tarnished reputation that makes adoption more challenging.

Related: Pit Bull's Rare Gene Mutation Makes Him Look Exactly Like an '80s Rock Star

Many landlords and homeowners' associations won't allow Pit Bulls due to their size and strict breed policies. Since Pitties usually wait longer for adoption, their stress levels increase due to their chaotic environment, which can make a negative first impression on shelter visitors.

Thankfully, someone saw the love and joy Opossum has to offer and gave him a forever family. Hopefully other Pit Bulls will get the same chance at happiness.

Big Bear’s Splashy Bath Time Has Everyone Smitten Like He’s a Kitten

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 6:00pm

When I was a kid, I watched this movie called Open Season, and it inspired me greatly. The main character, a park ranger, has a Grizzly Bear named Boog for a pet. I was, and honestly still am, very jealous. Unfortunately, though, bears don't make good pets.

They sure love to try, though. Recently, one Andean Bear who lives in a zoo had the chance to take a bath! He looks like a total professional doing it, and his splishy-splashy moments make everyone want to take him home:

@philadelphiazoo

Just dropping this here... Carey Bear Country opening soon! 🐻✨ #phillytok #bearsoftiktok #bears #fypシ #splishsplash

♬ original sound - Philadelphia Zoo

This bear lives at the Philadelphia Zoo, where he's obviously having the time of his life. There are three bears living in their new Carey Bear exhibit: two Andean Bears, Alba and Turbo, and one Sloth Bear, Bhalu. They might add more in the future, but for now, it's just them!

The one in the Rubbermaid tub (someone in the comments said RubBEARmaid, which is awesome) is Turbo, the male Andean Bear. You can tell because of his eye markings, and he looks a bit less fluffy than Bhalu. He really seemed to love his bath... Almost as much as I love him!

Related: Sanctuary Rescues 27 Endangered Bears From a Farm—and They’re Total Sweethearts

Turbo is adorable, but his partner, Alba, takes the cake. She's huge, she's amazing, and best of all, she's very shiny. They recently posted a video of her walking around, and she honestly looks like she's made of silk:

@philadelphiazoo

Who's ready to meet the bear behind this booty? 🐻 🍑 Carey Bear Country opens THIS Thursday, June 4, and starting tomorrow we'll be introducing the three bears you'll get to meet on your next visit. You won't want to miss these bear-y special reveals— stay tuned! ✨ #phillytok #bears #bearsoftiktok #phillytiktok #cuteanimals

♬ original sound - Philadelphia Zoo

She's an icon. I feel like I really want to take her home. I could make her a nice bedroom in my house! I bet she'd love it!

What Enrichment Do Bears Need?

Bears in zoos are carefully planned for and looked after, and their enrichment changes all the time. The one thing that never changes, though, is the fact that they absolutely must have stimulation. Otherwise, bad things will happen.

mlorenzphotography / Getty Images

There are plenty of ways to enrich a bear's life, and variety is the best way to make sure they get what they need. Typically, bears will need a place to:

  • Swim (a Rubbermaid tub is great in the interim).
  • Climb: they thrive with lots of trees and structures.
  • Forage.

Bears have also been known to play with toys on occasion, like big blocks or bouncy balls. Many of them thrive with companionship, too: these three bears will keep each other company in between their splishy-splashy baths!

Maine Coon Kitten Goes From Wrinkly Gremlin to Fluffy Little Lion in One Week

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 5:55pm

If you're a cat person, you already know Maine Coons are impressive kitties even from a young age. But there's something extra special about watching them go from newborn to one week old that's almost hard to believe.

From a teeny little gremlin with closed eyes to a fluffy little lion whose signature Maine Coon features are already beginning to emerge, this High Smoke Maine Coon Kitten is melting hearts online. And his day-by-day transformation is remarkable to watch.

Check out the changes in this June 23 TikTok from @wildmane_mainecoons:

1 week of growth! #mainecoon #kitten #mainecoonkitten #cutecat #catsoftiktok

Those tiny feet might just be the cutest toe beans ever!

At birth, the tiny kitten looks much like any newborn cat. His eyes are closed, his fur is still sparse, and his little pink paws seem both big and small. Even on day one, his striking white facial markings stand out against his darker coloring, especially the expressive little brows.

Each day brings a little more fluff, a little more length, and a little more personality. As the week progresses, his fur begins filling in, his features become more defined, and his tail starts showing hints of the impressive plume Maine Coons are famous for. By day seven, it's already easy to see glimpses of the majestic cat he'll eventually become.

Fans couldn't get enough of the adorable before-and-after journey.

"The white mask is adorable," wrote one viewer.

Another commenter added, "The little white face!"

Maine Coons Are One of the Slowest-Maturing Cat Breeds

According to the Cat Fanciers' Association, the Maine Coon is a slow-maturing breed that can take up to three years to reach full growth, with mature males often weighing 20 pounds or more, while females typically stay smaller. That means kittens like this one still have years of growing and plenty more fluff ahead of them.

If you'd like to see more of the kittens with their mom, @wildmane_mainecoons shared another adorable video on June 28, and it's every bit as heartwarming as you'd expect.

@wildmane_mainecoons

Always making sure that a cry like that doesn’t mean someone is in danger #mainecoon #kitten #mamacat #newbornkitten #cutecat

♬ original sound - wildmane_mainecoons

Between the tiny paws, sleepy stretches, and rapidly growing fluff, it's impossible not to fall in love with this kitten. And if his first week is any indication, this little gremlin is already well on his way to becoming a magnificent Maine Coon that turns heads wherever he goes.

5 Things to Know Before Owning a French Bulldog (Especially the Vet Bills)

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 5:44pm

French bulldogs, also known as Frenchies, are an adorable dog breed beloved by many people due to their one-of-a-kind personality. French bulldogs have large bat-like ears, flat faces and an adorably agreeable demeanor that makes them so easy to love.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Frenchies are playful, adaptable and very smart, and they get along well with young children and other dogs, making them excellent family pets

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Of course, there are definitely some important things to know about French bulldogs before you decide to adopt one. For example, Frenchies are more prone to certain health conditions, which can be costly over time. They're also known to be stubborn, which can make them a bit more difficult if you’re a first-time dog owner.

That said, French bulldogs have a loving, funny nature that makes them one of the most popular small dog breeds in the world. Equipped and empowered with this information, you can determine whether you and your family are the right fit for a Frenchie, or if another dog breed might be a better pairing.

Here are the five most important things to know about French bulldogs before you get one, according to French bulldog pup parents.

Important Things to Know Before Owning a French Bulldog

Image via Unsplash/May Gauthier

Here are five important things to know before getting a French bulldog.

1. Be Careful on Walks, Especially During the Summer

Frenchies are known to overheat easily because they are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) dog breed. This feature makes their airways shorter, meaning it makes it harder for them to take in enough air to regulate their body temperature and cool them down. This is especially difficult during exercise or hot weather, so be mindful on walks in the summer or year-round if you live in a hot climate that stays hot.

Related: The 'U-Turn' Method to Stop Your Dog From Pulling on the Leash, According to a Professional Trainer

2. Get Pet Insurance ASAP

French bulldogs are more prone to certain conditions, including respiratory issues, back and spinal problems, allergies, sensitivity disorders, and skin, eye and ear conditions. Because of this, getting pet insurance is a must so you can potentially reduce the costs of healthcare in case your doggie develops one of these issues. Vet bills can quickly add up without pet insurance, which is why it's absolutely essential you sign up for it, especially before a condition develops, as pet insurance often won't cover pre-existing conditions.

3. They Have Selective Hearing

Translation: Frenchies are very stubborn and do what they want, when they want. However, it's their strong personalities that make them so lovable in the first place. Just keep this in mind, especially if you're not an experienced dog parent, as this characteristic can become frustrating incredibly fast.

4. They Snore—Loudly

Because of their flat faces, Frenchies definitely snore...and they snore loud. If you plan on sleeping with your dog in your bed and you're sensitive to noises like snoring, this trait might be something important to consider before adopting a French bulldog.

5. They're Loyal and May Be More Prone to Separation Anxiety

French bulldogs easily get attached to their pet parents, making them loyal companions that will follow you everywhere. If you're the type of person who tends to stay home or if you live in a home with others so there is always someone present, this can be a good sign a Frenchie is the right dog for you. However, if you travel a lot or spend long hours at work, you might need to reconsider or find ways to make sure your French bulldog won't be alone for long periods of time, such as hiring a pet sitter or finding a local doggie daycare.

Final Takeaways

Frenchies are sweet dogs, and they're popular for a reason. Their loving personality, friendly disposition and ability to be family-friendly pets are all pluses when it comes to adopting one. When adopting a French bulldog, though, it's important to also take into consideration your lifestyle and their needs as well to make sure you're compatible. Armed with the above information, you can decide if a French bulldog is right for you.

Orange Maine Coon's Epic Ear Floof Looks Like Tiny Angel Wings

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 4:05pm

I still remember when my own Maine Coon, Meatball, was just a tiny kitten with paws that looked three sizes too big and ear tufts that seemed determined to touch the ceiling. Maine Coons have a way of growing into their features eventually, but those oversized ears are part of what makes them so ridiculously adorable in the first place.

Which is exactly why I couldn't stop watching this precious orange Maine Coon kitten on TikTok. Between his giant ear floof that looks like tiny angel wings and his fluffy little body bouncing after a feather toy, this sweet baby is basically proof that Mother Nature occasionally likes to show off.

Watching this kitten bounce after the toy is adorable enough on its own.

But then you notice the ears.

The magnificent, gravity-defying, glorious ear floof.

They don't even look like ear tufts anymore.

They look like someone carefully attached two tiny angel wings to the sides of his head.

Meanwhile, the kitten is blissfully unaware that he's one of the prettiest little cats on the internet.

The comments section was just as enchanted.

• "Beautiful fluff ball."

  • Adorable.
  • So Beautiful
  • What a sweetheart.

I have a feeling every Maine Coon parent knows exactly what comes next.

Today it's "beautiful fluff ball."

Tomorrow you'll be vacuuming enough fur to knit yourself an entirely new cat.

Worth it? Absolutely.

Maine Coons are famous for their luxurious coats, which developed to help them survive the cold, snowy winters of the northeastern United States. Their long, shaggy fur helps repel moisture while providing insulation during colder weather.

Their signature ear tufts aren't just adorable, either. The extra fur may help protect the inside of their ears from cold temperatures and debris. Combined with their fluffy tails, oversized paws and impressive ruffs around their necks, Maine Coons have one of the most recognizable appearances of any cat breed.

As kittens, those giant ears often seem comically oversized.

Eventually they grow into them.

At least... most of the way.

Golden Retriever Can’t Stop ‘Petting the Puppy’—Even When She's a Grown Adult

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 4:00pm

Golden Retrievers are pretty much sold by the world as an easy dog breed that never does anything out of line. Golden Retrievers are, like, the dog breed, and for good reason: they truly are gorgeous, kind, and great for families with kids.

They're also absolutely insane sometimes. Golden Retrievers are some of the quirkiest dogs the world has to offer, and that's what I love about them. For example, this Golden Retriever can't stop petting her puppy sister... Even though she's all grown up now:

@goldengirlpacha

“Can I pet that dawg?” - Pacha probably #dogsoftiktok #dogtok #goldenretriever #cuteanimals #funnyanimals

♬ original sound - Pacha and Bucket the Goldens

Pacha and Bucket are too funny. This is such sister behavior! I have an 8.5-year age gap with my sister, and I can confirm that I annoy her just like this. It started when Bucket was a baby: pretty much as soon as she got home, Pacha, who was born in 2022, started petting her.

Her parents just thought she'd grow out of it eventually. Maybe it was some kind of dominance thing, or a curiosity thing. Those never last... But this one did. Pacha, two years later, still pets her sister every single day.

Related: Rare Black Golden Retriever Puppy Looks Like a Toasty Marshmallow

In Pacha's defense, this happens with every dog. Some of them even try to boop her first! For example, she had a friend over once, and he was not letting her get away without knowing what all of that silky fur felt like:

@goldengirlpacha

One minute into small talk and they’re already throwing paws 👋🏼 #goldenretriever #dogtok #dogsoftiktok #christmas #funnyvideos

♬ nick sturniolo used this omfg - 🩵

Throwing paws is completely normal among dogs, even if it looks like it might not be. Pacha and her friends throw paws to show that they love each other!

Why Do Dogs 'Boop' Others?

If a dog is booping or petting another dog like Pacha does to her sister, there's absolutely nothing to worry about. You might notice they do it to you, too! It's innocent, normal, and honestly, has a pretty cute explanation.

Jana Murr / Getty Images

If you notice your dog is booping their friends, siblings, or even some humans around them, it just means they want something from them. It could mean:

  • They want attention.
  • They want to play.
  • They're hungry.

If you want to stop getting whacked, it would be best to give them what they want as soon as possible. Otherwise, they'll just keep going!

A Piece of Steak Looks Just Like this Border Collie, and We Can't Look Away

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 2:35pm

Most of the time when making a steak dinner around your dog, the highlight is probably just going to be them begging you for a piece.

But for Trin Valente, the highlight of a recent steak cookout was finding a piece that bore an...pretty uncanny and unexpected resemblance. A piece looked just like her Border Collie.

In a video shared to TikTok, Trin shared the hilarious moment of the food and her dog. Hilarity definitely ensued.

@trinvalente

I’m freaking out this steak looks like my dog #steak #dog #foodthatlookslikethings #dogfood #bordercollie

Comments on the video were equally as funny and the unexpected twinning moment.

"Are we both high because I am high and it definitely looks like your dog!"

"I’m sober and I see it"

"his manifesting is on another level"

Why Dogs Love 'People Food'

Aside from the allure of it being delicious, there are several biological reasons why dogs are so drawn to eating "people food." A combination of their survival instincts, their incredible sense of smell, and the fact that eating is a bonding ritual for dogs makes them extremely enticed by human food and meals.

A very simple reason why dogs are so enticed by people food is it's often higher in salt and fat, making it "high value" and extra delicious to them. Dogs also experience the bulk of their flavor senses from smell, so the aromas of human food make it pretty irresistible to them given its potency compared to something like kibble.

Dogs are also total opportunists as a way of surviving. Being able to sense that something is much more calorie dense is instinctual to them as in the wild it would be a means of survival. That high value, very caloric food means getting their bodies nutrients, which makes it super appealing to them.

And on the sweeter side, eating is a bonding ritual to dogs, who are pack animals. And as humans, we're their pack! So it makes sense that they would want to eat the same things and with us as a means to becoming closer.

Sweet Puppy Finally Convinces Lonely German Shepherd to Play

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 2:00pm

Not all dogs like to play, and many especially don't love to play when they get older. My first-ever dog didn't touch a toy in the 8 years we had him, but I've had three dogs since then, and they all love toys more than they love us. Some dogs just don't play like that.

One German Shepherd had exactly that problem. She never really played, even though he had several siblings and a whole farm to run on. Recently, though, her family found a puppy and everything changed:

@heatherrrr.979

Her head is wet because it’s been in Sadie’s mouth #greatpyrenees #puppydistributionsystem #foundpuppy #puppytiktok #guarddogs

♬ original sound - bitterexwifechronicles

Heather really lucked out with this puppy! They live on a farm, and there are tons of other animals there, but Sadie has never really clicked with any of them. She doesn't mind them and even likes them sometimes, but they never really play.

Then they found this Great Pyrenees puppy. They legitimately found her, too: she was hiding underneath Heather's truck and barking at nothing. They have no idea how she got there, but it was definitely meant to be. How often does a livestock guardian puppy just wander onto a farm?!

Related: ‘Toasted Marshmallow’ Great Pyrenees Puppy Looks Like a Sweet Dream in the Garden

They haven't named her yet, but pretty much immediately, Sadie took a liking to her in a way she never did with any of the other animals on the farm. She usually plays with her toys on her own, but these days, she has no trouble at all sharing with her sister:

@heatherrrr.979

She’s not thrilled 😂 #greatpyreneespuppy #founddog #puppydistributionsystem #germanshepherd

♬ original sound - Jellyfish Jams Daily

In Sadie's defense, she might have been a loner girl even with her new sister... But that sister didn't exactly give her much of a choice. That puppy wanted to play, and she was not about to take no for an answer!

German Shepherds Can Be Loners Sometimes

German Shepherds have been shifted around and trained to do a million different things, but they're Shepherds: they were born to herd. Herding isn't typically a task that requires you to bond with others, so German Shepherds tend to be loners. As a result, a lot of people get them puppies!

Oscar Wong / Getty Images

A lot of the time, German Shepherds prefer human companionship over the companionship of other dogs. That can be exhausting! The hope with getting a German Shepherd a friend is that:

  • It will encourage socialization.
  • It will entice them to exercise.
  • It will motivate them to explore more: some dogs really don't like to go outside their comfort zone.
  • Reduce some of that "Velcro" behavior.

Though it definitely works sometimes, it's important that you continue to monitor them: even if your German Shepherd feels willing to play sometimes, they'll still want their alone time. They should be allowed to have it! Luckily, Sadie gets alone time... And time to shove her sister's head in her mouth. Best of both worlds!

Golden Retrievers Discover the Ultimate Way to Beat the Heat, and We're Taking Notes

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 1:30pm

Most dogs really enjoy playing outside, and now that summer is here, so are the sunny days that make it so much fun to take them out for long walks and games of fetch. There's just one problem: Being out in the heat can be taxing on a dog, and just like for humans, staying hydrated is key.

The Golden Retrievers at one farmer's market had no problem finding their own way of beating the heat, though, and they look like they're loving every minute of it.

View this post on Instagram

After spending the day outside, they cooled down by laying directly in their own piles of ice cubes, which gave them a nice, cold surface to enjoy while also licking the cubes to drink the cold water as they melted.

Honestly, this is kind of genius... and they both look like they're totally in heaven here! This is really the sign of a good day: Dogs who are tired out and keeping cool all at the same time.

It seems like after doing this for a while, they were even comfy enough to fall asleep. Is it socially acceptable for humans to just dive into a pile of ice cubes and take a nap on a hot day, too?

Signs of Overheating in Dogs

With summer in full swing, many of us are experiencing intense heatwaves, and while many dogs can be pretty good about regulating their own body temperature, if you're hot, so are they.

With the temperatures so high, it's more important than ever to be aware of the signs of overheating in dogs so you can avoid an emergency for your pup. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), you'll want to look out for:

  • Excessive panting
  • Excessive and/or thick saliva
  • Weakness and loss of mobility
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Bright red gums
  • Labored breathing

If you believe your dog has overheated, an immediate trip to the vet is necessary, since dogs suffering from overheating can experience seizures or even fall into a coma.

While you're outdoors with your dog this summer, be sure to keep them hydrated, take plenty of breaks in the air conditioning and shade, and even consider bringing along a fan to blow on them while they're outside. They will thank you for it!

5 'Harmless' Household Cleaners That Are Secretly Toxic to Your Pets

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 12:13pm

From sparkling kitchen counters and shiny bathroom floors to shampooed carpet, having a freshly cleaned home is the absolute best feeling. However, did you know that there are certain cleaning products that may actually be unsafe for your pets? Well, if you didn’t, you do now, and knowing what types of cleaning products to avoid in a pet-friendly house is important for keeping all of your fur babies safe, healthy and happy in the home.

To find out more about the common household cleaners that are toxic to pets, we spoke with Dr. Stephanie Liff, a New York City-based veterinarian and practice owner who manages eight veterinarians across the Pure Paws Veterinary Care clinics. She also serves as a vet advisor for the dog nutrition and wellness company Spot & Tango.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Dr. Liff shares why some household cleaning products are more harmful to our pets than others (plus which ones to avoid at all costs), and the pet-friendly swaps you can make to your clean routine without sacrificing cleanliness. Read on to see how you can still have a nice and clean home without the potential risks to your fur babies. It's possible—if you know the smart swaps to do it.

Why 'Sparkling' Can Sometimes Mean 'Toxic'

everdrop GmbH / Unsplash

We may want our homes to be sparkling clean, but sometimes that term may mean that the cleaners you use may be toxic to your pets. This is because of the way our pets experience chemical cleaners differently than we do, especially in regard to their sensitivity to scent.

"The nose of dogs and cats differs significantly from humans, so dogs have [a] 10,000 times better sense of smell than humans, and cats have [a] 14 times better sense of smell than humans, so they are scientifically more sensitive," Dr. Liff says. "Also, depending on the size of your pet, you may not safely be able to open windows and doors to air out a space after cleaning, so the scents may also be more concentrated, which is another difference."

Noses to the Floor: How Pets Experience Chemical Cleaners Differently

Zack Dowdy / Unsplash

In addition to being more sensitive to scent, pets may experience cleaners differently thanks to their build and stature.

"In regards to floor cleaners and other cleansers used on devices or surfaces that are low to the ground, pets' noses are also low to the ground, so the exposure is more direct," Dr. Liff says.

Why Lingering Residue Is a Lethal Threat

Courtney Vitale / Unsplash

Residue from cleaners can have a number of potentially dangerous effects, including injury to your pet or an impact on their organs.

"If the residue from cleaners lingers, it can make floors slippery, which can lead to injury," Dr. Liff says. "Also, since pets walk without shoes on the floor and then often groom their feet, they could be ingesting chemicals as well, which could impact their organs—specifically liver and kidneys—but also the skin is an organ that can be impacted by contact injury."

Toxic Household Cleaners for Pets

According to Dr. Liff, the top cleaners to keep away from your pets include products with toxic ingredients such as:

  • Bleach
  • Phenol disinfectants
  • Ammonia
  • Formaldehyde
  • Quats (quaternary ammonium)

"While some levels of exposure may be safe, these chemicals have the potential to be harmful, so please be mindful of their use in homes with pets," Dr. Liff warns.

Recognizing the Subtle Signs of Chemical Toxicity

Tomas Bankauskas / Unsplash

Knowing what to look for when it comes to chemical toxicity is essential knowledge for any pet parent.

Signs of chemical toxicity in pets may include:

  • Salivating
  • Drooling
  • Lip smacking
  • Sneezing or coughing (if the air is heavily perfumed with the cleaner)
  • Red, irritated skin or eyes
  • Eyes that tear up

"If you notice more severe signs like wobbliness, lethargy, changes in appetite or changes in gum color, this is a medical emergency and requires veterinary attention," Dr. Liff says.

When to Skip Google and Call Animal Poison Control Immediately

Katja Rooke / Unsplash

"I typically restrict poison control calls for known ingestions or exposures, but if your pet is acting sick and you think there is a possible ingestion or exposure, you should either go see your vet or an ER/urgent care vet, or contact your vet to discuss," Dr. Liff recommends.

Pet-Safe Swaps: How to Deep Clean Without the Danger

Precious Plastic Melbourne / Unsplash

Before you empty out your whole cleaning caddy, know that it's possible to keep your home clean without harsh pet-toxic cleaners.

"Steam and diluted white vinegar are probably the best options for cleaning," Dr. Liff says. "Also, hypochlorous acid is a very safe option that has excellent antiseptic properties. Baking soda is safe and can be used on surfaces as long as you vacuum it away. Plant-based soaps diluted into warm water can be used as alternatives."

Now that you know this important information, you can keep your home clean without any dangerous consequences for your pet.

Tiny House Tuxedo Cat Sends a Bear Running, and the Internet Has One Hilarious Take

Mon, 06/29/2026 - 11:48am

When a black bear entered a backyard in Quesnel, British Columbia, earlier this week, she probably expected to dig and search through it without any interruption.

What she didn't expect was a guardian. One that was much smaller but had the heart of a lion. The video, shared by Canada's CTV News, shows the bear calmly exploring the yard.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Then, without hesitation, a small black-and-white cat charges from across the lawn. For some reason, the bear, outweighing the cat by several hundred pounds, runs away, jumping over the fence and retreating into the forest.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/YJQMjW82H1Q

The brave cat managed to defend its property like a true guardian.

The Bear Never Saw It Coming

One commenter on the video said, "The element of surprise. The bear was not expecting that, nor was it in hunting mode. A brave, and lucky, cat."

That is probably the right observation. Bears are not looking for a fight when they slip into yards. They are looking for food, and when faced with unexpected aggression, they would rather leave than escalate the situation.

This bear had an exit and took it.

You Do Not Need a Guard Dog, You Need a Cat

The best comment under the video said, "Note to self, forget the guard dog, get a cat." Many agreed with that comment.

Of course, many said the cat deserves its reward, with one fan saying, "You better give that cat some catnip and extra kibble my dudes."

Another commenter talked about how his cat was in a similar situation, saying, "Brought back memories of my tuxedo Mickey chasing both a squirrel and a strange dog out of HIS yard."

Tuxedo Cats Are Winning the Internet

Tuxedo cats are quietly becoming the darlings of the internet. Cat parents love their personality. Many describe it as "tuxitude," a combination of smart, confident, bold, and territorial instincts all in one.

Cat parents often say that tuxedo cats act like they "own the room." Here is the fun part. Tuxedo is not a breed. It is a coat pattern. They have mostly black bodies with white patches on their chests, bellies or paws.

These cats are so popular that they have two holidays dedicated to them. The first one is Tuxedo Cat Appreciation Day, held on January 29. The second is National Tuxedo Cat Day, celebrated on November 29.

With the video going viral and showcasing the true bravery of tuxedo cats, these cats are slowly becoming the most popular choice among cats. Maybe even more popular than void cats.
