Walmart's 'Amazing' $18 Cat Window Perch Holds Even Heavier Kitties

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Indoor kitties love to bask in the warm sun while watching birds and other critters out the windows. That's why a window perch can be such a "purrrfect" gift for your cat. And now, Walmart has a highly rated one that's on sale.

The Lanney Cat Window Perch is now just $18 when it normally costs $29 at Walmart.

This perch is designed for large cats and it's foldable, so it won't affect the normal opening and closing of curtains and blinds when you're ready to close them at night. It has four strong suction cups for stable support and a load-bearing capacity of up to 33 pounds.

The cat bed cover can be reversed, so it's warm and comfy on the plush side in the winter and breathable in the summer. And the zipper design makes it easy to wash.

This window perch measures 23.9"x11.2"x8.1". When folded, it's only 1.96 inches thick.

One buyer writes: "I have two cats weighing in between 14-16 lbs. Both have been on the shelf with no problems."

Another person raves that the perch is "amazing" and "awesome quality."

On Walmart's website, buyers are rating this 4.5 out of 5 stars overall. They say the perch is sturdy and they like the design.

One impressed buyer writes: "I had my doubts that this would hold my 16-pound kitty, but I was wrong. The suction cups are large and solidly hold onto the glass. It holds firmly when he takes a flying leap from the cat tree onto the perch!"

Another buyer agrees about the sturdiness, writing: "Was quick and easy to put together - has a summer side and a winter side for your cat's comfort. Very sturdy and has survived many leaps in and out."

A third buyer raves that this is "total bliss" for their kitty. They write: "My cat Jewels loves it. She can enjoy the view and look at the birds and squirrels or take nap."

The Bottom Line

For only $18, the Lanney Cat Window Perch is a "purrfect" deal, especially if you have heavier kitties. It's designed to stay firm and hold up to 33 pounds, and buyers agree that it does the job. So why not give it a try?

One buyer notes that this is "super easy to install," and only advises that you remember to "spritz your window before sticking" so the suction cups work extra well.

Walmart offers free 90-day returns and free shipping options on this window perch.

Tiny Dog Boots Are Winning Over Pet Parents as Temperatures Continue to Climb

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

The sidewalk looks harmless until your pet stops mid-step and refuses to continue the daily walk. With temperatures rising far beyond what paws can handle, it is time to think of ways to protect them.

Asphalt can reach high temperatures even when the air feels only warm. With temperatures climbing above 100, a short walk can quickly become a risk of burns.

Unique Bargains Waterproof Dog Shoes, $22.99 at Target

Target

Shop It!

The Unique Bargains Waterproof Dog Shoes, available at Target, provide a layer of rubber between your dog's paws and the hot ground. Made of a soft, flexible and waterproof material, these boots allow dogs to move with a normal gait without stiffening.

The wide opening allows for easier on-and-off, and the double Velcro straps help adjust and secure the fit.

Designed for medium and large dogs, check your dog's paw width before you purchase. There is a size chart, and make sure to find the right fit.

Does Your Dog Need Boots?

Hot pavement is worse than most pet parents realize, making boots a necessity for daily walks on scorching hot days. Pavement doesn't cool down even when the temperature does and is often 30 to 40 degrees hotter than the air temperature.

With the recent heat wave bringing temperatures up to 100, it is time to get your pets some protection.

You can always try the seven-second hand test to check whether you can walk your dog outside. If you cannot hold your hand comfortably against the pavement for seven seconds, then it's too hot for your dog.

How to Get Your Dog to Wear Boots

Not all dogs will happily wear boots. Most will need time to get used to walking in them.

Before you go outside, try a few short sessions at home to help your dog get used to wearing boots. Immediately after putting the boots on your dog, offer a treat to build a positive association. When a dog associates the boots with good things, they will be happy to wear them.

More Ways to Keep Dogs Cool During a Heat Wave

Boots are just one way to protect dogs in the summer. They protect dogs' paws, but that is not enough. Even with boots, pet parents should adjust walks and start early in the morning and then after sunset, avoiding the hottest times of the day.

Throughout the day, you can give your dog frozen treats or freeze a Kong to lower their core temperature.

When you play in the backyard, provide access to fresh water, and get a cooling mat for your dog to lie on.

Dog boots are just one way to keep dogs cool during the summer; however, they do not solve the heat wave crisis. Instead, they are a reminder that dogs need extra protection during extreme weather.

This Ex-Flight Attendant's Own Cat Turned Out to Be His Worst Passenger Yet

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 11:48am

A former flight attendant thought he had seen everything during his career. And then he had to fly with his cat, Titus.

Throughout his career, Mike has seen passengers traveling with their pets, and that experience gave him the confidence that he knew what to expect.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

However, things changed the moment he and his cat stepped on the plane. After the flight, he recorded a video. In the video, titled "I Thought flying my own cat would be easy, I was wrong," he talks about every possible disaster that could happen to a pet parent.

Preparation Doesn't Always Mean Success

Titus had flown before for a photoshoot, so the move from Texas to Seattle would not be his first flight. Mike believed that with some extra preparation, things would be easy.

For Titus and Mike, preparation started the night before. The former flight attendant tried a calming collar and calming chewables, but neither worked, and Titus seemed to take personal offense at both attempts.

"Calm collar ain't work. The chewables ain't work. Now I'm at a panic," Mike confesses. Despite the red flags, he put Titus into a carrier and took an Uber to the airport.

TSA and Security Measures When Traveling With a Pet

Many first-time travelers may not realize that a pet carrier must go through the X-ray machine at TSA checkpoints. Your cat does not.

Passengers remove their pet from the carrier while security screens the empty bag. Pet parents can carry their feline through the metal detector or request a private screening room.

Titus' dad lifted him onto his shoulder and walked through the detector. However, the cat was visibly nervous, gripping Mike tightly as strangers admired him. While travelers saw a cute cat, Mike endured Titus' claws digging into his shoulders.

Related: This Must-Have Essential Helps Keeps Pets Safe and Protected While Traveling

The Flight Was a Challenge for Titus

Using standby privileges from his days as a flight attendant, Mike secured first-class seats. However, the moment the plane accelerated down the runway, Titus was not having it. Wearing headphones, Mike was blissfully unaware until his seatmate leaned over mid-flight with a smile and told him that Titus had been screaming the entire time.

By the time they landed in Seattle, another problem emerged. Titus had not used the litter box in hours. It took Titus almost two days post-flight to use the litter box.

While Mike knew that cats can hold for hours due to stress and need time to adjust to new environments, every passing hour brought more stress and anxiety. When Titus finally started using the litterbox regularly, his dad could relax. Still, Titus made his point clear to Mike.

What U.S. Airlines Allow Pets to Travel in the Cabin

Many U.S. airlines, including American Airlines, Southwest and Delta, allow pets to travel in soft-sided carriers that fit under the seat. That said, rules differ from airline to airline, as do fees, which can range from $50 to $150 per carrier.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the number of pets per flight is limited, so it can be risky to book a flight last minute if you expect to travel with a pet.

Cat Parents Related to Mike's Travel Ordeal

The comments under the video quickly filled with people who had similar experiences.

One viewer summed up the emotional roller coaster of traveling with pets, saying, "When your cat doesn't go to the litter box... the STRESS. Whew, glad he went and all is good! Poor guy was stressed from the flight. Glad to hear everyone made it in one piece though. Moving sucks!"

Another pointed to the change in behavior, saying, "You see a side of cats you've never seen before when they are in a carrier and traveling in any kind of motorized transportation."

Sweet Shelter Cat Paralyzed by a BB Pellet Is Searching for a Special Home

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 10:10am

Shelter animals deal with past trauma that includes abuse, homelessness, and major medical conditions. Some of these health issues developed organically while others were caused by unimaginable harm. These innocent dogs and cats need extra love and care to navigate their challenges and heal from what they've endured.

Khan the striped cat is barely 1 year old and recently arrived at the NAWS Humane Society with a severe injury. Now he needs a forever home to give him the love he deserves.

@franflight

This post infuriates me. Animal abuse still happens, and it happens more often that people think. Shere Khan is just barely 1 years old. He loves other cats and enjoys human affection. The fact that he still craves attention from humans after what was done with him is truly a miracle. If any of you have experience with paralyzed cats, please reach out to me as I would love to do as much as possible to allow him to have the highest quality of life possible. It you have experience with cats like Khan and are interested in bringing him into your home, please message me or e-mail me. I’m sending you guys all of my love, and I’m sorry for posting such a sad video on a Monday. Love you guys, please send Khan all of your love. 🫂 #adopt #adoptdontshop #cat #catsoftiktok #catadoption

♬ original sound - ridgeclub

In the TikTok from @franflight, Khan got some gentle affection from a staff member as the video shared his story.

"Shere Khan is a survivor of animal cruelty," the on-screen text explained. "Khan sustained an injury to his spine due to a BB pellet that struck his spine."

The social media post revealed Khan's X-ray and how he needs to be carried from place to place. Unfortunately, Khan will be incontinent and paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life due to his senseless injury. Still, the pretty kitty is facing his challenges with courage and resilience.

"When he first came to us, we had no idea what quality of life he was going to have," the story continued. "But everyday he continues to exceed our expectations."

Khan Still Trusts Despite His Past

Many animals who've experienced such horrific abuse often shut down and rebuff any sort of human interaction. Yet Khan still has an open heart even after what he's endured.

"He loves other cats and enjoys human affection," the caption read. "The fact that he still craves attention from humans after what was done with him is truly a miracle."

Related: Calico Cat Spends 13 Years on the Streets — Her First Safe Sleep in a Real Home Says It All

The post encouraged potential adopters who have dealt with paralyzed cats to consider making Khan a part of their forever family so he can experience life with a loving family. This feline fur baby deserves a real home.

"In the meantime, please send Khan all of your well wishes, prayers, and good vibes," the video concluded. "He needs it."

Man Interrupts Kayaking Trip With One Urgent Request: 'Go Get My Sheep!'

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 9:20am

Most kayaking trips start with sunscreen, snacks, and a peaceful plan to paddle around.

This one started when a man on a four-wheeler showed up with exactly one job for Ryan: Go get the sheep.

According to the post caption, they were getting ready to go kayaking when the man pulled up, pointed straight at Ryan, and urgently told him to go retrieve his sheep. There was a slight language barrier, so at first, everyone looked toward the water and thought maybe he meant a dog.

View this post on Instagram

That would already be unusual.

Then the camera zoomed in.

Not a dog.

Of course, Ryan went.

That's an important part of the story. Some people would need a minute to process why a stranger had just sent them kayaking after a mystery animal. Ryan heard the request, saw something struggling, and paddled out to help.

In the video, he reaches the animal and starts pulling her from the water up onto the kayak. At that point, she doesn't look like a fluffy little farm friend. She looks like a wet, heavy, confused object with legs. A soaking wet sheep isn't exactly built for graceful kayak loading.

The post’s storyteller said they had never seen a sheep swim before, and watching Ryan attempt to hoist one into a tiny kayak became a memory they’ll never forget. That seems fair. There are normal outdoor memories, and then there is “remember when a man made us rescue his swimming sheep?”

The people in the comments had plenty to say, too. One person insisted sheep simply can’t swim, which is understandable if your only reference point is a dry sheep on land. Another commenter offered the more practical explanation: Sheep may manage short distances, but once that fleece gets saturated, it can become dangerously heavy.

That’s why this rescue feels funny and stressful at the same time. The visual is ridiculous, but the sheep really did need help. A tired animal in open water can get into trouble fast, especially if they’re weighed down and far from shore.

Ryan may have thought he was signing up for a casual paddle.

Instead, he became the emergency sheep ferry.

And somehow, he pulled it off.

In the video, every detail gets stranger as it goes. The four-wheeler arrival. The pointing. The assumption that it was a dog. The zoom-in reveal. The tiny kayak. The waterlogged sheep. The fact that Ryan just accepted his assignment like this was part of the rental agreement.

What To Do If You Find Livestock in Trouble

If you see a farm animal stuck, injured, or struggling in water, take it seriously, but don’t put yourself in danger trying to help. Large animals can panic, kick, or shift weight suddenly, especially when they’re scared or exhausted.

The RSPCA shares guidance on sheep welfare and the importance of proper care and handling.

If you find livestock in trouble:

  • Call the animal’s human or local authorities if possible. Someone nearby may know the safest way to help.
  • Avoid jumping in without a plan. Water rescues can be risky for people.
  • Use a boat, rope, or safe support if available. Keep a big distance from hooves and sudden movements.

Ryan saved the day, but the real lesson is clear: Never underestimate a sheep with poor planning and strong survival instincts.

Black Cat Shakes His Head So Fast, His Eyes Look Like a Slot Machine

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 9:05am

I have seen cats get the zoomies, make that weird chattering sound at birds and randomly sprint across the house at 2 a.m. for absolutely no reason. I thought I had seen it all. Then this fluffy black cat shook his head while somehow keeping his eyes wide open, and my brain has yet to recover.

The best way I can describe it is this: imagine those old cartoon sound effects where a character's eyes start spinning with a giant SPROING! noise. That's exactly what this looks like. His eyes turn into what can only be described as tiny slot machine reels, and I laughed so hard I had to watch it three more times.

@nothing_but_nitro

I don’t think the eye contact was necessary #catsoftiktok #cat #slowmo

♬ original sound - Nitro

The hilarious video was shared by @nothing_but_nitro.

The first caption reads:

"I don't think the eye contact was necessary."

Then comes the follow-up:

"I just wanted to pet him but witnessed an exorcism instead."

The clip starts innocently enough. His cat mom reaches down to give her fluffy black cat a few pets.

Related: This Dog Sashays Down the Street on Her Hind Legs Like She Owns the Sidewalk

Instead, he lets out the strangest little warbly meow imaginable before shaking his head at approximately the speed of light...

...without ever closing his eyes.

Somehow they're still locked onto the camera the entire time.

I don't know how that's physically possible.

I don't know if science knows how that's physically possible.

The comments absolutely lost it.
  • "I've never seen a cat shake their head with their eyes open I'm crying."
  • "We love a dramatic cat."
  • "WAIT WHAT."
  • "I don't think cats work like this."
  • "He's a cartoon."
  • "Why did he leave his eyes open."
  • "Not the eyes in different directions and I am crying."
  • "I've never seen a cat shake their head so fast. This might be a world record."
  • "He sounds like a spaceship laser beam thing maker."

Personally, I can't stop laughing at "I don't think cats work like this."

Because...they don't.

I'm almost positive there was a glitch in the Cat Operating System.

If this were my cat, I'd spend the next week randomly asking him if he was okay, just hoping he'd do it one more time so I could show literally every person who walked into my house.

"Forget looking at vacation photos."

"Come watch my cat briefly transform into a Looney Tunes character."

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go add "slot machine eyes" to the ever-growing list of things I didn't know cats were capable of.

Ridiculously Tiny Orange Kitten Has More Eyes Than Body

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 8:05am

I don't know what it is about tiny orange kittens, but they completely destroy my ability to be productive. The smaller they are, the more convinced I become that they deserve unlimited forehead kisses, tiny blankets, and someone telling them they're doing a great job just for existing.

This precious little orange kitten immediately stole my heart because he looks like he's approximately 30% kitten and 70% giant eyes. He's so unbelievably tiny and scruffy that he barely looks real, yet somehow those enormous eyes make him even cuter.

The adorable video was shared by @hiraya0317.

The little orange kitten is absolutely teensy, with a skinny little body, oversized ears and the biggest, most expressive eyes you've ever seen.

He looks around so earnestly that it's almost impossible not to melt.

The Internet Immediately Fell in Love:
  • "Does he know...? Like in general?"
  • "He looks like one of those popsicles with the gumball eyes."
  • "He's so good at having eyes."
  • "His eyes are bigger than he is."
  • "Would you like some kitten with your eyes?"
  • "He's just a wittle baby."
  • "Bro is only one apple tall."
  • "One popcorn."
  • "He was born next week."

Personally, "He was born next week" absolutely sent me.

I've never seen a kitten look so adorably undercooked.

He doesn't look unfinished.

He looks like someone accidentally hit "save draft" instead of "publish."

♬ Big Little Lies (TV Theme) - Voidoid

Runts and especially tiny kittens often need a little extra support as they grow. That can include regular weight checks, plenty of high-quality kitten food once they're old enough to eat on their own, and close monitoring to be sure they're staying warm, hydrated and gaining weight appropriately.

Many runts grow into perfectly healthy adult cats although they sometimes develop a little more slowly than their littermates. Regular veterinary checkups are especially important to make sure they're getting the nutrition and care they need during those early weeks.

Looking at this little guy ...

I have a feeling he's going to grow into those eyes eventually.

Maybe.

Split-Face Tortie Maine Coon’s Golden Eyes Look Like Ancient Treasure

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 8:00am

While I've probably seen every single color of cat that has ever existed at this point, I will never pass up a video of a pretty kitty. Especially if that pretty kitty also has pretty eyes, which, luckily, most of them do.

None of them hold a candle to this Tortie Maine Coon, though: not only does she have the most gorgeous split-face coloring, but her eyes are golden! They look like ancient treasure that pirates would definitely fight over:

@chicathemainecoon

Chica the Maine Coon looks like she was plucked straight from a Tim Burton movie. She's so beautiful, and although she's absolutely massive, she's only 13 weeks old! 13 weeks, she's already reached the size of a lot of full-grown cats. Maine Coons are awesome.

Chica actually just made it into her forever home: some breeders keep Maine Coons until 12 weeks instead of 8. It just allows for a little more socialization time, which is especially good if they're going into an only-cat household! Luckily, in her only-cat house, Chica is so loved!

Chica is a Tortie Maine Coon, and while she's not a Chimera (two embryos that fused together, creating a totally split cat), she has a perfect split on her nose. Up close, she's so majestic that she almost doesn't look real:

She's so pretty from every single angle. Unfortunately, though, this video doesn't show off her golden eyes, which are one of everyone's favorite features about her. Those are not something you see every day!

Are Golden Eyes Rare?

The combination of her Tortie coat, fluffy ears, and golden eyes put Chica over the top: I have never seen another cat who looks like her. She has to be one in a million, especially with those eyes!

imageBROKER/Addictive Stock / Getty Images

Shades of amber and gold are actually not rare at all when it comes to cats: they're one of the most common eye colors. However, the gold we see in other cats' eyes is typically more muted and yellow. Though there isn't a direct link between coat and eye color, a lot of Tortie cats have:

  • Amber/golden eyes.

Lonely Shelter Dog Is 'Still Waiting' for Adoption After 185 Days, and We're Emotional

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 7:10am

Many shelter dogs are overlooked for adoption for various reasons including age, breed, size, and temperament. The chaotic environment of a shelter takes a toll on canines who continually get passed up, making it even more challenging to find a forever home.

Nina is a sweet dog who has been at the Maui Humane Society for over six months, and she is still hoping to finally be chosen.

@cassondrachristman

Nina is still waiting. Nina’s potty trained, good in the house good when left alone. She’s had many best friend dogs at the Humane Society that have all been adopted. She is very rambunctious when she plays with other big dogs who like her play style and does need monitoring since she hasn’t learned to take a correction yet and will snap back. she knows sit and paw. She takes treats very gently. She loves her toys and flinging them up in the air and has been friendly with every person she’s met. She’s estimated to be about four. She does have a prey drive so should not be around small cats or small dogs or animals that are small and she can be strong on leash. Please come in and meet her. She’s waiting at Maui Humane Society. Adoptions to other Hawaiian islands are possible. Usually airlines charge about $500 around that price. Adoption team can get an estimate and coordinate the flight. Off Island adoptions to the mainland US are possible. usually the airlines charge around $1,000 for a dog her size. Canadian adoptions are possible, but you have to pick up Nina at the nearest US airport and take her back to Canada. If you are on Maui come meet her, bring your dog to meet her. since she will not get to meet the dogs in the home If it’s an off Island adoption she should be the only pet. Off Island adoptions have to be 100% certain that it would work out because she cannot come back. If you’re interested, please fill out the adoption interest form in my bio. It will connect you to the adoption team and they will go over logistics. they can help coordinate the flights and get a price estimate have done it many many times before #adoptme #adoptdontshop #hawaiitiktok #maui #fyp

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Nina was lying in her kennel but suddenly perked up with a shelter staff member came in to spend some time with her. The precious pooch has been at the shelter since before Christmas and is starting to lose hope.

"Nina is still waiting," the caption read. "She’s had many best friend dogs at the Humane Society that have all been adopted."

The canine cutie is described as "very rambunctious" when playing with other big dogs and should be supervised.

"[She] does need monitoring since she hasn’t learned to take a correction yet and will snap back," the story continued. "She does have a prey drive so should not be around small cats or small dogs or animals that are small and she can be strong on leash."

Though Nina has some energy that needs to be managed, she has a heart of gold. "All she wants is love," the on-screen text explained.

Nina Needs a Chance at Happiness

The approximately 4-year-old fur baby loved all the affection she was getting from the shelter staffer and was grateful for every moment she wasn't alone. Nina is potty trained, knows "sit" and "paw," does well when left alone in the house, and is friendly to everyone she meets.

The video concluded by noting the progress Nina has made since first arriving at the shelter, and pleaded for someone to open their heart to this special girl.

"185 days of waiting," the on-screen text shared. "6 months without a family. 6 months of hoping. She's come so far from coming in unable to even stand up. This can't be where she stalls. We can't let the shelter break her."

Hopefully, someone will see the love in Nina's eyes and heart and give her the chance she deserves.

Indoor Cats Live Longer Than Outdoor Cats, Study Finds

Fri, 07/03/2026 - 6:10am

When you bring a cat into your family, one wish tops every pet parent's list: helping them live a long, happy, healthy life. While no one can control exactly how long a cat will live, there are some decisions that can have a major impact on your feline friend's lifespan.

If you’re curious what really makes the biggest difference, keep reading because researchers have identified a surprisingly simple way to help your cat live longer in a new study, and it may not be what most cat owners expect. The good news is, it's something pretty simple and Dr. Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor for Embrace Pet Insurance, backs it up.

So, even though many factors can influence cat lifespan, from genetics to daily care routines, knowing that one key decision can significantly affect how long your furry companion stays by your side, is worth paying attention to. For cat moms and dads, understanding how everyday choices shape cat health and longevity can make all the difference in giving their pet the best possible life. That way they can live their nine lives and beyond!

New Study Finds Indoor Cats Live Significantly Longer Than Outdoor Cats Cats that live indoors are exposed to fewer risks than outdoor cats.

Every cat owner wishes they could have more years with their feline friend, and new research suggests one simple lifestyle choice may make a meaningful difference.

The study found that indoor cats tend to live significantly longer than outdoor cats, with outdoor cats living only about 70% to 80% as long on average. According to Dr. Hunt, those findings are consistent with what many veterinarians see in practice.

Researchers believe the difference comes down largely to the number of risks outdoor cats face throughout their lives, many of which are avoidable when cats live primarily indoors.

What Is a Typical Cat Lifespan?

When kept healthy, cats can enjoy long, happy lives with their favorite humans (you, of course). While every cat is different, veterinarians say genetics, diet, preventive care and lifestyle all play a role in determining how long a cat lives.

"Cats’ lifespans can vary," Dr. Hunt says. "We typically consider cats to be senior cats at 10 years old, but I have treated cats in my veterinary clinic who reached and exceeded 20 years of age."

As it turns out, one of the biggest factors influencing a cat's lifespan may be whether they spend their life indoors or outdoors.

Why Indoor Cats Live Longer Than Outdoor Cats

According to veterinarians, the biggest advantage indoor cats have isn't luck—it's protection. While no environment is completely risk-free, indoor cats avoid many of the everyday hazards that can dramatically shorten a cat's lifespan.

"Trauma, such as being hit by a car or attacked by another animal, is a major risk," Dr. Hunt says. "Becoming ill and/or succumbing to infectious disease, including Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), is another risk."

Outdoor cats are also more likely to encounter predators, toxins and dangerous situations that owners can't always prevent. Because they spend much of their time out of sight, injuries or illnesses may go unnoticed until they've become much more serious.

While some cats enjoy exploring outdoors, Dr. Hunt says an indoor lifestyle helps protect them from traffic, predators, infectious diseases and other dangers that can threaten even young, healthy cats.

How Much Longer Do Indoor Cats Live?

Exactly how many extra years can an indoor lifestyle add? While every cat's lifespan is different, the difference can be surprisingly significant, which may shock pet owners and people considering adopting a feline.

"The study notes that indoor cats may live a decade longer than outdoor cats," Dr. Hunt shares. The '10-year' estimate reflects situations where outdoor cats experience life-ending trauma at a young age, such as being struck by a vehicle. This type of situation would have shortened its lifespan by a decade or more."

So, if you currently have a cat or are dreaming of getting one, keep that in mind.

Can Indoor Cats Still Have Health Problems?

Even though living indoors gives cats an important safety advantage, that doesn't mean they will live forever, they still face challenges that can affect their health.

"Indoor cats can develope helath risks that tend to develope because of lack of enrichment such as diabetes, obesity and behavioral issues," she notes. "To avoid those, it's important to ensure your kitty is eating and drinking well, exercising and attending regular vet appointments."

Though, while both indoor and outdoor cats face sitautions that can shorten their life, pet parents can help prevent a lot of the situations that occur to outdoor cats if they decide to keep their furry companion inside their home and they provide them with an active lifetyle.

What Risks Shorten a Cat’s Life?

While both indoor and outdoor cats face sitautions that can shorten their life, pet parents can help prevent a lot of the situations that occur to outdoor cats if they decide to keep their furry companion inside their home.

Outdoor cats are more exposed to trauma, such as traffic accidents. In fact, previously, a UK study found that traffic accidents were the leading cause of death among cats aged 1 to 8.

Other risks free-roaming cats face that indoor cats don't that can shorten their lives include things like having encounters with wild animals.

While some cats enjoy exploring outside, Dr. Hunt points out that an indoor lifestyle helps protect them from hazards like traffic, predators, diseases, and other dangers that can harm them when they are young and healthy.

That's not to say that indoor cats will live forever, they still face challenges that can affect their health. "Indoor cats can develope helath risks that tend to develope because of lack of enrichment such as diabetes, obesity and behavioral issues," she notes. "To avoid those, it's important to ensure your kitty is eating and drinking well, moving their bodies and attending regular vet appointments."

How to Train Outdoor Cats to Stay Indoors

Transitioning an outdoor cat to an indoor lifestyle takes patience, but it can make a big difference in their long-term health and safety. Rather than abruptly stopping outdoor access, experts recommend a gradual approach that helps your cat adjust without stress.

Start by increasing the amount of time your cat spends indoors each day, especially during key times like nighttime when outdoor risks are higher. Make the indoor environment more appealing with enrichment like scratching posts, window perches, puzzle feeders, and regular interactive play sessions to mimic the stimulation they would normally get outside.

You can also establish a consistent feeding and play routine so your cat begins to associate the indoors with comfort, safety, and positive experiences. Over time, many cats naturally begin to prefer staying inside when their environment feels engaging and secure.

While some cats may resist the change at first, consistency and enrichment are key. For many pet parents, the goal isn’t strict “training,” but rather helping their cat feel that home is the best and safest place to be.

5 Vet-Approved Ways to Help Your Cat Live Longer

While no one can guarantee exactly how long a cat will live, veterinarians say a few simple habits can help support a longer, healthier life. Along with keeping your cat indoors, Dr. Hunt recommends these practical steps for promoting your cat's long-term health.

Take Your Cat to the Vet Regularly

Preventive care is one of the best investments you can make in your cat's health.

"Preventive care, including vaccines, helps to keep your cat safe and is necessary even for indoor-only cats," Dr. Hunt says. "Follow their directions for parasite control. Promptly addressing illnesses and injuries helps to keep your cat healthy longer."

Schedule Annual Wellness Bloodwork

Cats are experts at hiding illness, which is why routine bloodwork can detect problems before symptoms appear.

"Performing wellness bloodwork on your cat once a year, even when your cat is healthy, can help you stay on top of your cat's overall heath," Dr. Hunt says. "Cats often hde when they don't feel well, so this bloodwork will turn up issues before you see them clinically."

Support Your Cat's Kidney Health

Cats naturally don't drink much water, making kidney disease one of the most common health concerns as they age.

"This leads many cats to develop kidney failure as they age," Dr. Hunt warns. To help, Dr. Hunt recommends feeding your cat canned food once per day to support kidney health—ditto for multiple water bowls. If you cat doesn't lke water, she suggests getting at least one moving water source, like a fountain.

Protect Your Cat From Household Hazards

Since you're able to watch your indoor cat more closely, make sure your home is cat-safe. Dr. Hunt says that means not getting a dog with high prey drive, keeping cats away from washers and dryers so they won't hide inside them and keeping toxic plants like lilies out of your home.

Don't Forget Dental Care

Healthy teeth and gums are an important part of your cat's overall health and longevity. That's why pet parents should brush their cat's teeth.

"You should have your vet examine your cat’s teeth, and have them do anesthetized dental cleanings as needed to keep your cat’s teeth healthy," Dr. Hunt notes. "You can expect that over the years, some teeth may need to be extracted to keep your pet healthy."

Finnish Lapphund Refuses To Let Dad Take the Boat Out Without Her

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 7:55pm

Some dogs beg to be included.

Roxy negotiates from underneath the boat.

The Finnish Lapphund had clearly learned enough about her dad’s routine to know something important was happening. A boat was involved. Fishing was involved. Wind was possibly involved. Therefore, leaving her behind was not an acceptable option.

View this post on Instagram

In the video, her dad explains that he was getting ready to go fishing and had planned on going without her. Roxy, however, had already filed an appeal. Instead of whining at the door or giving sad eyes from the porch, she placed herself directly under the boat.

A bold legal strategy.

From that position, Dad couldn't safely leave. Roxy didn’t need to bark, argue, or cause a scene. She simply became the fluffy little reason the entire operation had to pause.

View this post on Instagram

When he asks if she wants to go fishing, the answer is obvious. She may not say it in words, but her location says plenty. Yes, she wants to go fishing. Yes, she has reviewed the plan. No, she doesn't approve of being excluded.

Dad gives in, because what else is a person supposed to do when a determined Finnish Lapphund has turned herself into a boat anchor?

Then the video cuts to the lake, and Roxy's victory lap is perfect.

View this post on Instagram

She's on the boat with her fur blowing straight back in the wind, looking like every sacrifice was worth it. The boat speeds across the water, and Roxy gets the full adventure she knew she deserved. This is pure dog happiness: fresh air, motion, family, and the deep satisfaction of knowing your protest worked.

One commenter joked that one blast down the lake must equal an entire week of sticking your head out the car window, and that feels exactly right. For a fluffy dog, this isn't just transportation. It's a spa treatment, enriching activity, and emotional reset all at once.

Another viewer called out Dad for almost denying her the wind-in-her-hair experience, which may be the strongest point made in the comments section. Roxy wasn't asking for too much. She was asking for basic lake rights.

It also says something sweet about their bond. She knew where he was going, and she wanted in. Dogs notice our patterns. They know which shoes mean a walk, which bags mean a trip, and apparently, which boat movements mean Dad is about to have fun without them.

Roxy simply handled the situation at the source.

Dad got his fishing trip, and Roxy got the lake breeze she was promised by destiny.

Everybody won.

How To Keep Dogs Safe on Boats

If your pup loves the water, boating can be a great adventure, but it needs a little planning. Even confident dogs need supervision, shade, water, and a safe way to ride.

The American Kennel Club shares that pet parents should watch dogs closely around water and help them with safe swimming and boating habits.

A few smart tips:

  • Use a dog life jacket. Even strong swimmers can get tired, startled, or fall in unexpectedly.
  • Give them a safe spot to ride. Your dog needs secure footing where they won’t slide or get underfoot.

Roxy knew the boat was where she belonged. Dad just needed a little help understanding the assignment.

5 Ways to Keep Your Pet Safe During a Heat Wave
  1. Never leave your pet in a hot car: Even with windows cracked, temperatures can rise dangerously fast and quickly become life-threatening.
  2. Limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours: Save walks and playtime for early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are more likely to be a bit lower.
  3. Have fresh, cool water available at all times: Hydration is super important during extreme heat, so be sure to refill your pet’s bowls frequently. You can also add an extra water station in another room.
  4. Provide shade where they like to rest: Whether it’s indoors or outside, it’s nice for your pet to have a shaded, well-ventilated spot to sprawl out and recover from the heat.
  5. Look out for signs of overheating: Excessive panting, drooling, weakness or vomiting are all signs of heat stress. If symptoms appear, always seek veterinary care immediately.

If you’re thinking about snagging the Boots & Barkley Cooling Mat Dog Bolster Bed, keep in mind that it measures 32 inches in length, 24 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall, so it’ll fit smaller to medium-sized pets with ease. She Thought She Was Saving One Dog... Then an Unexpected Surprise Arrived

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 7:00pm

TikToker Tosha (its_me_tosha) and her family live on 33 acres "in the middle of nowhere" in Oklahoma. So when her husband spotted an unfamiliar dog walking up to greet him one day in mid-June, they had no idea where she had come from...or what she had been through.

As an experienced dog rescuer, Tosha immediately recognized the signs of neglect. The emaciated dog had one ear partially missing, was blind in one eye, and looked like she'd endured far more than any animal ever should. The family brought her inside, named her Grace, and focused on making her feel safe and comfortable. What they didn't know was that Grace wasn't the only life they'd just rescued.

Less than eight hours later, Grace went into labor and delivered 10 puppies, turning what they thought would be a rescue of one abandoned dog into the beginning of a new family. The heartwarming surprise has animal lovers celebrating a rescue that changed 11 lives instead of just one.

Tosha's caption was so touching: "She was carrying 10 reasons not to give up."

As one commenter pointed out, "This is probably the first time she can relax and be a momma without fear. What a blessing you all are to her."

Signs That a Stray Dog Might Be Pregnant

Believe it or not, surprise pregnancies are more common than many people realize, especially among stray dogs with unknown histories. It's unclear whether Tosha realized Grace was pregnant when she first found her. Because Grace was severely underweight, the pregnancy may not have been immediately obvious, even though she was just hours away from giving birth.

According to Purina US, a dog's gestation period typically lasts between 61 and 65 days, but noticeable physical changes often don't appear until around day 40. As the pregnancy progresses, a dog's teats may become larger and darker, she may experience mild "morning sickness," become quieter than usual, have a decreased or increased appetite, and gradually gain up to 50% more weight than normal.

Purina also notes that a pregnant dog's abdomen may become swollen and firm. However, first-time mothers and dogs carrying smaller litters may not show obvious signs, making pregnancy easy to miss.

If you rescue or find a stray female dog, experts recommend scheduling a veterinary exam as soon as possible. This can confirm whether she's pregnant, estimate her due date, and help ensure both the mother and her puppies receive the care they need for the healthiest possible start.

The anti-slip backing below prevents the bed from sliding across a hardwood or tile floor. Maintenance is simple: cold wash only. Remember that before you put it in the machine.

Novelty Keeps Growing in Popularity

Pets have become part of the family's style just as much as the home's function.

Nowadays, pet parents are looking for dog bowls that match their kitchen style, toy baskets that complement their living room, and beds that reflect their sense of humor.

Novelty design allows people to show a little personality while still providing a comfortable place for their pets.

This bed is exactly the piece of furniture that makes guests laugh and then immediately ask where you bought it from.

At the end of the day, there is something funny about seeing a little dachshund curled up in what looks like an oversized hot dog. A suitable bed for a wiener dog.

Get It While You Can

This novelty bed is part of the Aldi Finds section, limited-stock items that rotate weekly. At $14.99, the bed is a well-priced find that won't be hard on your budget if you decide to take it home.

If your decor leans toward the more playful and maximalist side, the Heart to Tail Hot Dog Novelty Dog Bed should blend in perfectly. Put it in the kids' room, in your brightly colored kitchen, or any other fun spot. Meanwhile, for your dog, the coziest seat in the house might be the one that makes everyone coming in smile.

Male Cats Form a Cuddle Ring Around Their Sister, and She’s Clearly the Princess of the House

Thu, 07/02/2026 - 6:10pm

Brothers are often protective of their female siblings. A big brother role is a lot to live up to and many proudly take on the responsibility. Even our fur babies look out for each other, with the males treating their sisters a bit like royalty.

Peep is an orange cat living at the Freedom Farmhouse Sanctuary with her kitty brothers and is obviously enjoying being so well protected.

Princess Peep exactly where she wants to be! Every time I think a cuddle puddle can’t get any cuter, the kitties find a new way to surprise me😄🥰 #catlife #catlover

The TikTok from @freedomfarmhouse revealed a close-knit snuggle party in the bedroom. A cluster of cats were piled around Peep as she gazed comfortably from the center of the cuddle ring.

"POV: Your male cats are extremely protective over their princess," the on-screen text explained.

Apparently, Peep's brothers make sure their sister knows how important she is to them by frequently pouring on the affection.

"Princess Peep exactly where she wants to be!" the caption shared. "Every time I think a cuddle puddle can’t get any cuter, the kitties find a new way to surprise me."

Followers were moved by the felines' affection for each other and noted Peep's high position in the family.

  • "She’s exactly where she wants to be," one remarked.
  • "Literally why can’t I be princess cat," another joked.
  • "I bet the purring rattles the windows," a follower pointed out.
  • "Queen behavior," someone commented.
Are Male Cats Protective of Females?

Male cats can be territorial, especially if they have not been neutered. If a male cat feels particularly bonded with a female cat, he may exhibit protective behaviors toward her. Males are also known to be more affectionate than females, as exhibited in Peep's "cuddle puddle".

Females are also very loving, yet have an independent streak and a more reserved demeanor. Males are often seen as more laid-back and sociable, making it easier for them to bond.

Peep is definitely a lucky lady to be surrounded by such love.

Amazon's Simple $7 Copper Disks Keep Bird Baths Sparkling Clean — 'These Really Work!'

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Summer is probably the most important time of year to make sure the wild birds visiting your yard have clean water. Setting up bird baths and bird fountains is super important for your feathered friends (and other critters, like squirrels and raccoons, who may visit.) But you'll also need to make sure that water stays clean! Amazon has a simple solution that's a best seller on the website.

The Mellbree Bird Bath Copper Cleaning Disc is just $14 for a pack of two — that comes out to only $7 each. (The Copper Sunflower and Copper Flower varieties are $14. If you want the Copper Bird design at the same listing, it's $16.)

Judging by the reviews, this is the perfect solution for your bird baths. The purification disc reduces the need to frequently scrub your bird bath. It works best with non-metallic basins, such as stone, plastic, nylon, ceramic, concrete, and composite materials.

According to the manufacturer, the disc "leverages copper's innate properties to help maintain cleaner water in bird baths." It doesn't replace the need to clean, but helps extend the intervals in between cleaning.

One buyer writes: "I should have ordered these years ago! My fountains are so much cleaner with these. No more algae clogging up the pumps and the water is still crystal clear weeks later."

  • "I have used this disc all spring and can say that my bird bath has never stayed cleaner."
  • "These really work! I was skeptical, but now I’m a try believer. They keep the algae out of your birdbaths."
