Cats are some of the most dramatic creatures in the world. One slight move and they’re off and running, clawing their way up the curtains to escape from the danger. Even something as basic as a sneeze is enough for them to lose all trust in everyone and everything around them (the betrayal!).

This is what two cat brothers have been feeling for the last 24 hours. That’s when an unexpected visitor, the tiniest Dalmatian puppy, appeared out of nowhere to invade their space. The reaction these kitty bros have is so over the top, it’s like they’re auditioning for a movie role.

While the cats fear for their lives with the most bonkers reaction to an adorable puppy ever, the 7-week-old Dalmatian puppy, named Drax, is doing what puppies do by enjoying a good nap. As the kitties carefully inspect the tiny pup (who looks like the sweetest scoop of cookies-and-cream ice cream), Drax is in dreamland, not a care in the world.

Drax is so small and innocent, but considering how jumpy cats are in general, it’s not that far-fetched to believe two big, confident kitties are strategizing how best to handle the situation (because, cats!).

It’s in a part of a cat’s DNA to be skittish around new or unpredictable smells, people, sounds, or even small movements that catch them by surprise, because they’re animals who like to be in control of their surroundings.

Feeling scared of smaller animals stems from an instinctual survival reflex that their cat ancestors needed in the wild, and they don’t always use logic when reacting so fast. Many times, they jump or sprint off before their brain understands what the potential threat even is. This happens a lot when there’s a small animal suddenly present, and even objects, that to them, came out of nowhere and/or move erratically.

One cause can be a lack of socialization as a kitten, or never being exposed to different species—even if it’s the cutest Dalmatian puppy in the world. In time, the kitties will see that the newcomer isn’t a threat; they may even become friends.

Honestly, I’m a grown human woman, and I have a similar startle response as the two cats… but not because of a cutie-pie puppy like Drax.

When adopting or rescuing a dog, most people advise that you should follow the 3-3-3 rule when looking at how your dog or new furry family member will go about adjusting.

The 3-3-3 Rule Goes As Follows:

• The First Three Days: This is the period for decompressing. During this time, your dog might still be scared, nervous, anxious, and overwhelmed, which is perfectly normal. They might seem shut down and feel the urge to hide; some may even go on a hunger strike. It’s important to not force anything during this period and give your dog lots of time and quiet while they’re adjusting.
• The First Three Weeks: These weeks are the period for the dog to learn the new routine and habits of their new home. As they become less stressed, this is also where you might begin to see signs of your pup’s true personality. This is a great time to start easing into training, establishing routines, and giving your dog lots of positive reinforcement while they continue to grow more comfortable in the home.
• The First Three Months: This is when you’ll see your dog really start settling in and feeling truly at home. They’ll become totally ingrained in your family and part of your pack!

While this is a great outline for expectations to a certain extent, it’s important to remember that all dogs are different, and adoption and rescue are always going to have things pop up. Patience is key, and with plenty of that and love, you and your rescue dog will be on the way to bonding in no time.

With big dogs come big feelings, and in the case of Norman, a cute (but colossal!) Newfoundland, those feelings absolutely won’t be ignored!

Norman’s mom, Ash, recently shared a video on TikTok where she showed off Norman’s larger than life temper tantrum when he needed to make it VERY clear that he was ready for his walk. Clearly, the bigger the dog, the bigger the meltdown.

Why Do Newfies Love Water?

Newfoundlands (or Newfies) love water because, over the course of history, that is simply what we as humans have bred them to do.

Newfies were originally bred to be working dogs in the bitter cold of Newfoundland, specifically on fishing boats. The breed are hearty, sturdy working dogs whose jobs originally involved working on boats or the coast doing things like hauling nets or heavy equipment, or even rescuing things that fell into the icy waters.

This working breed has a natural “rescue instinct” which makes them unafriad of water and prone to jumping in when they feel the need to. Additionally, their body types are completely built for aquatic activities with their thick, double coats, webbed toes, and strong tails and chests.

On top of all of this, which makes a lot of sense given that it’s literally bred into them, Newfies like the water because it helps them cool off. And pretty simple, it’s also just a lot of fun.

Felix the ginger cat was caught elbow-deep in the kitchen sink, rummaging around like a raccoon raiding a dumpster at 2 a.m.

This is not the first time we’ve talked about Felix. Recently, Felix and his human had a deep conversation. The spare wanted them to take the relationship to the next level, saying they should be friends. Why Are Cats Obsessed with the Sink?

Cats who dig through the sink are drawn to the residual food particles and moisture left on the dishes. The behavior is an instinct to investigate food sources. A full sink of dirty dishes is an all-you-can-eat sniff buffet to a cat.

The coveted “freedom ride” of a shelter dog is always cause for celebration. Finally getting adopted and heading to their forever home is a momentous occasion that marks a new beginning for these fur babies. The minute a shelter pup leaves their kennel for the last time and jumps into a vehicle, they’re embarking on a total fresh start.

Most dogs take their freedom ride in a car, but Nutmeg the Pit Bull mix got to travel in style when she bid a fond farewell to Cobb County Animal Services.

The TikTok from @sharing.lov3 told Nutmeg’s story and how she’s spent months at Cobb County Animal Services waiting for her forever home.

“Nutmeg was one of the most overlooked dogs at the shelter, and she became one of our longest residents,” the caption explained. “She was surrendered with another dog after their family could no longer care for them. A Florida resident named Diane saw a social media post of Nutmeg and was immediately smitten. She was willing to got do “whatever it took” to adopt the precious pooch and just needed help transporting her to Florida. An entire team that included shelter staff members, a volunteer coordinator, and a pilot who flies for Pilots n’ Paws, all worked together to give Nutmeg a freedom ride that made history.

“This Freedom Ride was unlike any other,” the caption shared as Nutmeg got a ride to the airport to board a passenger plane chartered just for her. “Nutmeg was flying home. She became the first dog ever from @CCAS to have a Freedom Ride on an airplane.”

Nutmeg Had a Name Change

Nutmeg arrived in Florida safely and instantly bonded with her new family. To commemorate the canine cutie’s new beginning, they gave her a new name: Josie.

“The updates have been beautiful,” the social media post noted. “They tell me Nutmeg is the most perfect dog and they are in love with her!!”

The post concluded by expressing gratitude to everyone who helped make Josie’s dream a reality.

Virginia Commonwealth University researchers found lower self-reported stress during the workday among employees who brought their dogs to work, and they also observed pups creating little positive interactions between coworkers.

I hear “9-month old puppy,” and I’m expecting a baby. Maybe a slightly lanky baby with paws he hasn’t grown into yet. I am not expecting a Bullmastiff who arrives at dog daycare looking like he should be checking the fence for structural weaknesses. But he IS a baby, and I would like everyone to remember that while admiring his enormous, preciousness.

The comments immediately understood the assignment. “He’s just a babyyyyy,” one viewer wrote, while another added, “Just a tiny speck. I almost missed him!”

I love watching dogs play bitey face, but this fluffy Border Collie seems to have skipped straight to the advanced version. His Dachshund friend has a long little snoot, and the Border Collie has apparently decided to see how much of it will fit in his mouth. The answer is an alarming amount.

In the clip, the black and white Border Collie opens wide and puts his mouth around the Dachshund’s muzzle and face as the two play. It looks like somebody gave him a living squeaky toy and forgot to explain that the squeaky toy is his bestie. Meanwhile, the Dachshund is right there in the middle of the game, contributing his whole face to the cause.

The video shared by @sirweeniewinston makes the size difference impossible to ignore. The Border Collie has a big, fluffy head and enough mouth to make the Dachshund’s little face practically disappear. I keep wanting to tell him, “A little less Dachshund, please.”

The comments were just as entertained. “Not a single thought between the two of them,” one viewer wrote. Another imagined the Dachshund asking, “Does my breath stink?” That might explain the extremely thorough inspection, although I doubt either dog is giving this game quite that much thought.

Dogs can look outrageously silly when they play with their mouths, and these two have found the funniest possible way to do it. The Border Collie’s huge grin around that tiny Dachshund muzzle is the sort of image I would show someone who claims dogs don’t have a sense of humor.

One commenter gently reminded him that “the sausage is not a chew toy.” Fair point. He does seem awfully interested in testing whether his friend’s nose comes with a squeaker.

My dog Kingston has played plenty of games that made perfect sense to him and absolutely none to me. I suspect these two could explain the rules of bitey face if they wanted to, but they’re much too busy playing. For now, the Dachshund supplies the face, the Border Collie supplies the mouth, and the rest of us get to laugh at the sheer logistics of it.

Both of my dogs have a strong aversion to any sort of beauty treatment. Whether it’s a shampoo, blow out, nail clipping, or even just a good brushing, both my Dachshund and my Pug mix immediately get anxious and count the seconds until it’s over. Thankfully, they have short-haired coats that aren’t high-maintenance.

Why Do Cats Prefer Running Water?

Because to a cat, a bowl of water that’s been sitting out since this morning is a different substance entirely.

Experts agree that running water reads as fresh. Still water collects microbes and develops a smell cats detect long before we would, and it drifts to room temperature while a tap runs cool — which cats prefer. A faucet solves all three problems at once, on demand.

Which, admittedly, is what a cat fountain is supposed to do. But a fountain recirculates the same water all day. It warms to room temperature; it can develop a film no matter how diligently you scrub it, and the pump hums. A tap delivers water that has never been in that bowl before, at whatever temperature the pipes are running. To a discerning cat, those are not the same product.

There’s a vantage point element too. Drinking from a bowl on the floor means lowering your head to ground level, which is instinctively vulnerable. A sink is elevated, with sightlines in every direction. Whatever Layla thinks she’s doing, sprawled across the counter, she has chosen the safest spot in the kitchen (despite looking exposed LOL).

And then there’s the obvious one. Running water moves, splashes, and makes noise. It’s the only thing in the kitchen that does anything at all. For a bored cat, that isn’t hydration. It’s entertainment.

There are certain dogs that have a strength in their demeanor and an unmistakable air of fearlessness. They’re not fazed by much and they seem to know what they want and how to get it. Confidence can surface in a range of ways for a dog, points out Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel. “It does not always mean being bold or highly sociable,” she says. “It can also show in how calmly they approach unfamiliar situations, how quickly they recover from a setback, or how comfortable they are acting independently.”

Some breeds are more prone to this than others, but every pooch is different. Outside factors like how a dog is raised can also play a role. “Personality varies tremendously among individual dogs,” explains Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster. “Genetics and generations of selective breeding can influence behavioral tendencies, but early experiences, socialization, training, health, and the individual dog’s temperament all play important roles.”

Ultimately, the goal is to help an individual dog become comfortable, resilient, and predictable in the situations they’ll encounter throughout life through good socialization and positive, reward-based training. When you do that, you’ll have a tough-looking and protective dog breed that is affectionate and friendly as well.

If you want a dog that can hold its own without being intimidating to live with, you’re in luck. These confident breeds may not be easily intimidated, but beneath that fearless exterior, they’re sweeties in disguise—and experts say they can make wonderful pets.

The German Shepherd has a reputation for being a tough guard dog, but there’s a lot more to this breed than meets the eye. So, if you’re searching for a dog breed that looks intimidating, but is also loving, consider this one. “German Shepherds have a tough persona that has earned them many important jobs including police dogs and guardians,” says Chyrle Bonk, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “However, they tend to have a sweet and loyal personality as well.”

The German Shepherd is happy to be a family dog—provided you give them plenty to do, of course. This breed is smart and loves to be challenged regularly, making consistent training, lots of exercise and mentally-stimulating toys a must. “Combined with their high intelligence, German Shepherds can be very easy to love, especially with the right training and job to do,” Bonk says.

This breed “often bonds strongly with their families and will follow their people wherever they go,” Bonk says. While the Rottweiler is often confident and self-assured, Warner says this breed typically does a good job knowing when to ratchet things up or down. “They also tend to be very gentle, especially when socialized to things like children and other pets,” Bonk says. Like all dogs, the Rottweiler does best with good training.

Dobermans don’t just have emotional intelligence—they’re smart in other areas of life, too. That makes them easy to train. Combined with their desire to please their humans, this breed can do double-duty as a confident protector and sweet pet. Because Dobermans are usually very smart, they’ll need plenty of mental stimulation and exercise to keep them well behaved.

Still, this breed is a total ball of love. “Great Danes may look imposing, but they are often calm, affectionate dogs that enjoy being close to their families,” Warner says. “Their confidence is usually quieter and more composed.”

While the Great Dane is confident, laidback and often gentle, they require guidance to be their best selves. “Their size means early training and careful handling are essential,” Warner says. She also stresses the need for space, given how large the Great Dane can be. Just make sure your Great Dane has plenty of opportunities for exercise, given that they tend to be high-energy.

Keep in mind that Poodles aren’t big shedders, making them a great option for people who aren’t into the idea of constantly chasing down fur tumbleweeds.

Anatolian Shepherd A tough Anatolian Shepherd that is super lovable.

They were originally bred to guard livestock like sheep and goats, so they aren’t easily intimidated by people or other animals. “Anatolian Shepherd Dogs have a more independent kind of confidence,” Warner says. “Bred to guard livestock, they can be watchful, self-reliant and deeply loyal.” 

This isn’t the most lovey-dovey dog you’ll find, but the Anatolian Shepherd will still form close attachments to its humans. Still, the Anatolian Shepherd will need good training to be an excellent pet. “They are powerful and naturally protective, so they need an experienced owner, thorough socialization and secure surroundings,” Warner says. This dog is smart and patient, making them receptive to training.

Oh my goodness, we just can’t. Coco’s mom shared various throwback clips of the tiny kitten and said it was when Coco “had zero thoughts.” We wouldn’t normally describe balls of lint like this, but she is seriously adorable.

People in the comments couldn’t believe how small Coco was back then, and many people agreed that Coco looked particularly lint-like. One person said, “Your dryer lint has eyes,” and another commented, “Sentient pocket lint.” However, sentient is pushing it a bit.

Others shared adorable photos of their own kitties during what people referred to as “the lint stage.” One person posted a photo of their Black Cat at a similar age as Coco and said, “I love when kittens are in the lint stage. I remember my baby girl being there.”

When Do Kittens Start To Become Aware of Their Surroundings?

While memorable, this time in their lives is short, and if you aren’t careful, you could miss it! So when do kittens start to become aware of their surroundings? Generally, kittens reach this stage around 2 to 3 weeks of age, when their eyes open and ear canals begin to unfold.

Newborns come into the world blind and deaf, relying entirely on smell, touch, and warmth. Their eyes start to open around 7 to 14 days, though their vision is blurry at first. This is what is known as the neonatal stage.

At around 2 to 3 weeks of age, their eyes open fully and ears begin to straighten out. Kittens start responding to sounds, lights, and unfamiliar scents, and they take their very first wobbly, uncoordinated steps.

Then, during weeks 3 and 4, their vision and hearing sharpen rapidly, baby teeth begin to emerge, and kittens start walking more steadily. They show clear curiosity by interacting with their littermates and exploring their immediate environment.

Coco is the sweetest little girl. Hopefully she starts to become more aware of her surroundings soon!

Niall Harbison comes across some seriously ill and injured street dogs through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. Many of these dogs suffer in silence without care for months before finally being rescued. Some cases are more dire than others and require immediate intervention in order for the dog to survive.

Bruno the German Shepherd mix was hit by a car and languishing on the side of the road before Harbison and his team immediately sprang into action.

The Instagram from @niall.harbison shared Bruno’s story and described the condition he was in after the incident.

“He’d clearly been hit by a car and also dragged underneath it when two of our team came across him first thing this morning,” the caption shared, with the on-screen text adding, “Cars kept passing by as he lay waiting for someone to notice him.”

Bruno was obviously traumatized and in shock, yet his sweet nature was shining through even though he was in pain. Harbison knew he had to act fast to save the precious pooch’s life.

“Sometimes we come across dogs and we fear the worst,” the story continued. “But I think we got to this gorgeous gentle boy, just in time… Despite being in so much pain it’s unbelievable how nice and gentle he was in terms of his nature.”

Bruno Is on the Road to Recovery

The video showed Bruno being gently transported to Harbison’s medical clinic, where an X-ray revealed a fractured leg. Thankfully, the veterinary team worked quickly to get Bruno out of his critical state.

“We were able to get him in, get him treated, and onto the best possible pain relief and medicines,” the caption explained.

In the post, Bruno received loving care from the medical team and Happy Doggo staff members. He snuggled in a blanket with a stuffed animal, finally able to rest. Harbison is committed to help Bruno through his recovery every step of the way.

“He has a long road ahead, but you’re safe now Bruno,” the video concluded.
