According to the New York Times, here's exactly how to play Strands:

Find theme words to fill the board.

• Theme words stay highlighted in blue when found.
• Drag or tap letters to create words. If tapping, double-tap the last letter to submit.
• Theme words fill the board entirely. No theme words overlap.

Find the “spangram.”

• The spangram describes the puzzle's theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.
• The spangram highlights in yellow when found.
• An example spangram with corresponding theme words: PEAR, FRUIT, BANANA, APPLE, etc.

Need a hint?

• Find non-theme words to get hints.
• For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.
• Hints show the letters of a theme word. If there is already an active hint on the board, a hint will show that word's letter order.

Despite the actor making a name for himself in Hollywood and earning notable acting recognition, he continued to appear on theatrical stages, which led him to meet the love of his life.

In 1980, the N.Y.P.D. star joined the cast of The Man Who Came to Dinner, a major Broadway revival of the hit 1939 comedy play.

Theater actress Maureen Anderman, who played the female lead, caught Converse’s eye and the pair soon developed a lasting romance that would span decades. 

Two years after the play, they officially got married in 1982 and reportedly had a close friend and Broadway icon Colleen Dewhurst read a poem, which became the highlight of the ceremony.

Anderman and Converse were blessed with two children and settled down in Connecticut.

Converse’s wedding to the Tony-nominated actress was his third, following his first marriage to Carol Tauser, whom he married in the late 1950s before his on-screen limelight.

His second wife was Elise Astrid Ronning, whom he married shortly after his divorce from Tauser.

Theater Power Couple

With the same career background, both the Moving On star and Anderman continued as theater actors and even starred together on stage.

The pair marked their first major stage performance as husband and wife in 1986 for the regional production of Real Estate alongside iconic actress Colleen Dewhurst and actor Peter Michael Goetz.

Over the decade, the theater power couple teamed up to perform at benefit galas, regional theater fundraisers and community theater nights in New England.

The world’s largest bourbon, food and music festival is going even bigger in 2026.

Bourbon & Beyond has officially unveiled the largest lineup in the festival’s history ahead of its eighth year, with more than 100 artists set to perform across five stages Sept. 24–27 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

This year’s lineup blends rock, country, Americana, indie and jam-band favorites, led by major headliners including Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Chris Stapleton and Dave Matthews Band.

The four-day festival kicks off Thursday with performances from Queens of the Stone Age and Goose alongside Foo Fighters.

Friday’s lineup features Mumford & Sons, Kacey Musgraves and Foster the People, while

Saturday spotlights Kentucky native Chris Stapleton, The Red Clay Strays and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.

Sunday closes things out with Dave Matthews Band, Hootie & the Blowfish and Counting Crows.

Beyond the headliners, the lineup includes a massive mix of fan favorites and cult acts, from The Flaming Lips and Gary Clark Jr. to Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Cheap Trick and Violent Femmes.

Festival organizers are also emphasizing the event’s signature bourbon and culinary experiences. The returning Fork & Flask curated by Kroger experience will feature Louisville restaurants, bars and spirit tastings, while the Kroger Big Bourbon Bar will again host bluegrass performances and line dancing throughout the weekend.

One of the festival’s biggest perks is returning for 2026 as well: attendees will receive free access to amusement rides inside Kentucky Kingdom, which became part of the festival footprint last year.

Produced by Danny Wimmer Presents, Bourbon & Beyond has rapidly grown into one of the country’s premier destination festivals, attracting fans from across the United States and beyond. The event was recently named Pollstar’s Global 2025 Festival of the Year.

Jake Worthington is shifting his focus. 

On Friday, May 22, the country music singer/songwriter, 30, took to social media to announce his plans to take a temporary hiatus from music and the road. Worthington reasoned that he needed to spend more of his time prioritizing his personal life, which includes his wife, Sophie, and the couple’s daughter, Whitley Anne.  

“I live a life as my heroes did, but that life has gotten a hold of me,” Worthington shared in a statement on Instagram, directing his message to his family, friends, and fan base.

“I love my family, my friends, and my fans too much to let it take over me,” he wrote. “I need to take some time to work on myself for my wife and daughter.”

At this point, it’s unclear which scheduled shows will be affected. And, although Worthington shared that he will be stepping away from the spotlight for some time, he promised he doesn’t plan on quitting music altogether. Instead, he hopes a break will prepare him for a strong return.  

“I promise I will come back even better,” he captioned, closing out his message with: “God bless Country Music. JW.” 

Fellow Country Artists Are Sharing Their Support

After sharing his vulnerable message online, Worthington quickly drew support from fans and friends, including other artists. 

“La you bro!” Dierks Bentley wrote in the comments section of the post, while Jake Owen added, “I’m here for ya, buddy. You are stronger than most.” 

Caroline Munsick, the wife of country singer/songwriter Ian Munsick, added, “We love ya,” while Hannah Dasher wrote, “Love yew buddy.”

Who Is Jake Worthington?

Worthington first rose to fame on season 6 of NBC’s The Voice, after auditioning for season 5. His second time around, he competed on Team Blake, where he became the runner-up, losing out to the winner, Josh Kaufman. Since coming off the reality competition series, Worthington has made his Grand Ole Opry debut, toured with major artists like Jon Pardi and Lainey Wilson, and released songs like “It Ain’t the Whiskey,” “Honky Tonk Talkin,” and others.

One of Southern rock's most recognizable voices is celebrating a major milestone.

Doug Gray, founding member and longtime frontman of The Marshall Tucker Band, has turned 78.

Gray helped launch The Marshall Tucker Band in the early 1970s, becoming one of the defining figures of the Southern rock movement alongside bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band.

Formed in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the group became known for blending rock, country, blues and jazz influences into a distinct sound that separated them from many of their contemporaries. With Gray's soulful vocals at the center, the band scored enduring hits including "Can’t You See," "Heard It in a Love Song," and "Fire on the Mountain."

After returning from Vietnam in the late 1960s, Gray teamed up with Toy Caldwell a songwriter with whom he'd go on to co-found the band.

"In 1970 we decided 'let's practice every night,'" Gray told Classic Bands. "We did. We made sure to do it. Had this little warehouse and sure enough, we went down there and recorded about four songs, one of 'em being 'Can't See You' and one being 'Take The Highway.' We recorded those in one place in Muscle Shoals and we were asked to come to Capricorn in Macon, Georgia and we did that. Then we went out on tour. We were gone the first four or five years for three hundred dates a year."

“Can't You See” in particular evolved into one of classic rock radio's most beloved Southern rock anthems, helping cement the band's legacy far beyond its original era.

The Marshall Tucker Band stood out during the 1970s because of its musicianship and willingness to blend genres. The group frequently incorporated flute, saxophone and extended improvisation into its music, creating a more fluid and melodic sound than many heavier Southern rock acts of the period.

Over the decades, Gray remained the band's most consistent member and public face, continuing to tour and perform long after many of the group's original members had departed or passed away. Even as musical trends changed, the band maintained a devoted fan base thanks to its timeless songs and reputation as a powerful live act.

"Every record of ours is a reference is to moving," Gray told Billboard. "'Fire On The Mountain' has references to staying on the move and accomplishing things. People still get married, they still break-up. And that's why people still come to the shows. They have their memories — and they bring their grandkids now."

For many fans, Doug Gray's voice remains inseparable from the spirit of 1970s Southern rock itself: warm, gritty and unmistakably authentic.

Now at 78, Gray continues to be celebrated not just for helping found The Marshall Tucker Band, but for helping shape one of the most enduring sounds in Southern rock history.

In the Season 1 finale of Boston Blue, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) went on patrol with his son Sean (Mika Amonsen), while Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) got shot while conducting a door knock for an investigation. Luckily, she survived and was home for Shabbat dinner by the end of the episode. But the cliffhanger came in the last 60 seconds when Lena’s boyfriend, Detective Brian Rodgers (Ryan Broussard), was getting back in his vehicle after buying flowers on the way to dinner when his car was T-boned and pushed into the bay, leaving viewers with a cliffhanger as to whether or not he survived, and who was driving the offending truck.

“There will be a time jump when we come back, but we will pick up that story, so we will work through what happened that night,” executive producer Brandon Sonnier told Parade. “We will work through where they are in the case moving forward, but in order to get Danny and Lena back up on the street, on her feet, we’re going past the leave of absence that Lena had to take in order to physically heal before she gets back on the job.”

And executive producer Brandon Margolis added, “We will not leave audiences hanging for very long as to what happened to Rodgers, what the BPD’s interest is in the driver of that truck and that will have a lot of momentum coming into this season.”

As they did in Season 1, members of the Reagan clan will make timely visits to Boston in Season 2 of the cop drama, but Wahlberg will continue as the only Blue Blood series regular.

“We are huge Blue Bloodsfans, and so every opportunity that we get to check in with those characters to remind our audience that that universe is where we live, that those stories are still ongoing in another city, we just aren't seeing them all the time we sort of [love] that,” Sonnier said. “So, we love when we have the legacy cast pop in just to check in on where they are and also to further their relationship with Danny and Sean and to weigh in on Danny's growth as a Boston police officer.”

What is the plot of Boston Blue Season 2?

Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan in the Blue Bloods’ spinoff Boston Blue. In this new series, Reagan takes a position with the Boston Police Department and is paired with Detective Lena Silver, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. The Silver family is comprised of Boston District Attorney Mae Silver, Boston PD Detective Lena Silver, Police Superintendent Sarah Silver, rookie cop Jonah Silver and renowned Baptist pastor Reverend Edwin Peters. As Reagan settles into his new job on the Boston PD, he also reconnects with his youngest son, Sean, who is beginning his own career in Boston.

What happened in the Boston Blue Season 1 finale?

In order for Danny to complete his transfer from NYPD to Boston PD, he was required to spend some time on patrol, so in what she saw as a “fun” move, Sarah assigned Danny and Sean to patrol duty together while Jonah was working with Mae on testimony for an upcoming trial.

Rodgers requested help from Major Crimes for a case that involved smuggling drugs, phones, and other sundries into prison, and since Sarah knew Danny was on patrol, she assigned Lena to help him. Sean and Danny joined them, and when Lena and Danny went to do a door knock, Lena was shot through the door, and it went through her vest.

In the hospital, Lena, who had planned to visit her biological father that night, received a visit from him in the hospital. She also met her half-sister.

Maria showed up in Boston to give Danny support with his new partner in the hospital, and they had a serious talk about their relationship. Danny told her that he never stopped fighting for them, and he’s thinking of moving into a command position so he can get a bigger place, and Maria, her daughter, and mother can move in with him. The first step is to take the sergeant's test.

“In our minds, that is a serious promise,” Sonnier said. “When he says they’ve taken it slow enough for too long, he means it. They know that this is a relationship they want to be in and they're going to do everything they can to make it work.”

“But that does require steps,” Margolis added. “You can't wave the magic wand and suddenly it's happy home, so there will be a continuation of that story in an evolution of their relationship going on in Season 2. The takeaway is that we did not want to end this season on a down note with them because we love Danny and Baez so much.”

Judge Elijah Robinson (Harry Lennix) and Mae did a press conference to take their relationship public to stay off any conflict of interest claims that might come up in her bid for re-election now that she’s being challenged by Thad Longfellow (Ward Horton).

“We loved introducing Thad at the end of our season as a great foil for Mae, and we can't wait for the two of them to get down and dirty in an election,” Margolis said. “The judge will come back. Harry Lennix is a gentleman and we love having him on the show and we’d love to keep writing for him, so we look forward to exploring that relationship and seeing what kind of pressure dirty politics can put on that relationship.”

Shabbat dinner was a big event with Joe Hill (Will Hochman) coming down from NYC to talk to Lena about what it was like for him when he discovered as an adult that the Reagans were his family.

“It was such a great parallel,” Sonnier said of bringing Joe into the mix. “I don't know that we always knew, but when it became available, when the story came up, when the idea was floated, we jumped at the chance because what a great sounding board for Lena to have a conversation with someone who found themselves in this situation of learning they had this whole other family as an adult. The way Joe was integrated into the Reagans is a really beautiful thing that they did on the previous show that we would like to embrace. There should be more stories of this family growing, there should be more stories of Lena getting to know this part of herself and her family that she never knew before.”

Also attending the Shabbat dinner were Judge Robinson and Lena’s bio father Chris Williams (Erik King) and half-sister Christina (Alisha Wainwright).

“Just because they have one dinner together does not mean their relationship is healed,” Sonnier said. “As Lena says in the episode, ‘That's a start.’”

As for how getting shot will affect Lena, Sonnier said, “We have spoken to many police officers about this. We actually have one on our writing staff and we've spoken extensively about once you experience this sort of trauma on the job, it does change you. Now, it can change you for better or for worse, and sometimes there's a decision that needs to be made to point yourself in one direction or the other. We're very interested in telling those stories.

"We understand that the audience knows that Lena will be a good cop -- that is the premise of the show. We're not going to upend that. We're not going to change that, but is there a difference in the way she approaches the job? Is there a difference in her physicality and her mentality and in the way she and Danny relate to each other? Those are things that we get to explore when we come back for Season 2. Often these sorts of traumas, these sorts of events, can drive you to being an even stronger, even better cop -- an even stronger, even better whatever it is that you happen to be.  That's really the world that we want to put Lena into.”

As for Jonah and Sean, Sonnier said, “We left Jonah at the end of Season 1 questioning how much good they were truly doing in the community. They know they're chasing bad guys, but am I doing enough for the people who need help?  It's not always about chasing bad guys. So, there's this idea of am I going to be a hard-charging cop who just runs after the biggest status crimes all the time, or am I going to be a community police officer who gets cats out of trees and helps little old ladies across the street? Somewhere in the middle is where we want all of our cops to be. We want them to be there to lend a hand, and we also want them to be there to take out bad guys. Sort of that push and pull, that struggle of where am I going to put my energy, where do I lean is where we find Sean and Jonah in Season 2.”

Fans of one 1990s band whose biggest song has stood the test of time will be very happy to hear the latest update on the group's long-awaited new music. 4 Non Blondes, which was founded in 1989 and currently consists of members Linda Perry, Christa Hillhouse, Dawn Richardson, and Roger Rocha, is officially releasing a new album in 2027.

The band's lead singer, Perry, revealed the release date update to NME, getting fans even more excited for 1994. She talked with the publication at the 2026 Ivor Novello Awards, saying, "4 Non Blondes are going to release a record in top of 2027, but I’m going [to] drop a couple songs on this side of the year too."

As for what exactly fans can expect from the new songs, she went on, "It sounds like we wrote and recorded it in 1994… So that’s what I’m calling the record, 1994."

“It’s dumb and fun and it has my Linda Perry touches on there, where it gets a little emotional and deep and political. But it’s a rocking record, and it sounds like it would’ve been our natural second record," Perry added.

This will be the first new album from 4 Non Blondes since their hit debut, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, which came out in 1992. The group made a big impact with their sole album, and their hit song, "What's Up?", continues to be a beloved track from the era.

In late 1994, when 4 Non Blondes was working on what would've been their second album, tensions arose between the members. They ended up disbanding, and Perry launched her successful solo career soon after.

As for what led to the exciting reunion decades later, Perry said, "I felt like it was a good time to put the band back together. I get asked about it all the time and I always say no, but this time I put it out in the universe myself. It just felt like time."

One of Aerosmith's biggest hits was a massive chart success and a movie soundtrack hit, and it came very close to winning an Oscar.

"I Don't Want To Miss a Thing," written and composed by Diane Warren, was recorded by the legendary rock band for the 1998 film Armageddon, and even earned an Oscar nomination Best Original Song at the 1999 Academy Awards.

It didn't end up winning the award, which instead went to "When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt, performed by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Other nominations that year included "The Prayer," from Quest for Camelot, performed by Celine Dion; "A Soft Place To Fall" from The Horse Whisperer; co-written and performed by Allison Moorer; and "That'll Do" from Babe: Pig in the City, performed by Peter Gabriel.

But even without winning the Oscar, "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" became an enduring rock staple, and it's the only one of Aerosmith's songs to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it reigned for four straight weeks in September 1998.

"I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, but ultimately lost the award to The Brian Setzer Orchestra for "Jump Jive An' Wail."

Aerosmith still took home an award that year, where they won in the category Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocal for their 1997 single "Pink."

Grizz Chapman, who was best known for his work on the iconic sitcom30 Rock, has died at the age of 52, TMZ reports.

A representative for the actor told the outlet that he died on Friday, May 22, but no other details were released. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Chapman's cousin, Donte “Hammer” Harrison, also shared the news on his Instagram in a heartfelt tribute.

"Life gave my cousin Grizz Chapman some heavy battles, but he fought them with strength and dignity until the very end," Harrison, who is on the Harlem Globetrotters, wrote. "A lot of people knew him as the sitcom star from 30 Rock, but we knew the man behind the screen. A good heart, good energy, and somebody who made an impact in this life.

"After years of fighting illness and dialysis, he passed peacefully in his sleep on May 22nd, 2026. I’m thankful we got time to reconnect 2 months before his passing. Rest easy, cousin. Your name and legacy will live on forever."

He met fellow 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan while working as a bouncer at a strip club, which then led to his role in the hit NBC show. Grizz, who is seven feet tall, was a member of Tracy Jordan's entourage and remained a recurring member for all seven seasons.

Along with his work on 30 Rock, Chapman appeared in other shows, including "Blue Bloods" and "The Black List." He also created a YouTube sketch series called "Grizz Chroniclez."

Fans paid tribute to the actor following the sad news.

"Sad news. Grizz Chapman brought a lot of warmth and humor to every scene on 30 Rock," one person wrote.

"No way!!!!! Griz!!! 😢," another person commented.

"whaaaaaaaat!!!! that’s so sad, especially in the middle of my rewatch RIP," someone shared.

Nearly 50 years after its original release, "The Chain" is once again climbing the charts.

The classic 1977 track by Fleetwood Mac is currently sitting at No. 25 on Billboard’s Rock Streaming Songs chart, marking yet another remarkable resurgence for one of rock music’s most enduring songs.

Even more impressively, "The Chain" has now spent more than 100 weeks on the Rock Streaming Songs chart, a remarkable achievement for a song originally released in 1977.

Part of the track's renewed popularity comes from the way it continues circulating across social media platforms like TikTok, where younger listeners are discovering Fleetwood Mac for the first time through edits, nostalgic music trends and viral videos. The continued cultural obsession with Rumours has also helped keep the song constantly relevant for new audiences.

The track's streaming longevity has additionally been fueled by its repeated use in film and television marketing because of its dramatic build and instantly recognizable bassline.

Most recently, "The Chain" was prominently featured in trailers for F1, helping introduce the song to another massive audience nearly five decades after its original release.

Unlike many of the softer radio hits from Rumours, "The Chain" carried a darker, more dramatic energy. Its famous closing section, driven by John McVie's unforgettable bass riff and explosive instrumentation, became one of the most recognizable moments in classic rock.

The lyrics and melody began with a demo written and recorded by lead vocalist Stevie Nicks.

In an interview with Variety, Nicks recalled how it came to be a Fleetwood Mac song. "Lindsay asked me, 'You know that song that you wrote about 'If you don’t love me now, you will never love me again” — can we have that? Because we have this amazing solo that’s at the end of it, when John McVie comes in. … We have that, and it's amazing, but we don't really have a song. Would you consider letting us have that song that I know you have, because I've known you a long time and I've heard it?'"

The band took it from here.

“'The Chain' basically came out of a jam," drummer Mick Fleetwood told Classic Rock. "It was put together, as distinct from someone literally sitting down and writing a song. It was very much collectively a band composition."

Over the decades, the song developed an enormous second life through movies, television, sports broadcasts and streaming culture. It became especially associated with emotional climaxes and moments of tension, helping introduce the track to younger generations repeatedly over time.

Three Dog Night didn't think "Joy to the World" would work.

The Los Angeles rock band's biggest hit was finishing its sixth and final week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 22, 1971, exactly 55 years ago today. Billboard later ranked the song as the No. 1 pop single of 1971 overall.

"Joy to the World" was originally written by country-folk singer-songwriter Hoyt Axton for an animated children's TV show that never aired. Three Dog Night co-founder Danny Hutton initially thought the song wasn't right for the band. The track's now-famous opening line about Jeremiah was briefly rewritten by Axton for a gospel version he was considering, before singer Chuck Negron heard the original wording and convinced the group to record that one. The song went to No. 1 anyway.

A Mother-Son Songwriting Dynasty

When Axton's tune topped the Billboard Hot 100, he and his mother, Mae Axton, became the first mother-and-son duo to each have a hand in writing a Billboard No. 1 pop single in the rock era. Mae co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" with Tommy Durden in 1955; the track became Elvis Presley's first No. 1 hit in 1956. Hoyt also wrote "The Pusher," covered by Steppenwolf for the Easy Rider soundtrack, and "Never Been to Spain," another 1971 hit for Three Dog Night.

"Joy to the World" hit No. 1 on April 17, 1971, and held the top spot for six consecutive weeks before bowing out on May 22, 1971. It earned Three Dog Night a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus at the 14th Grammy Awards, where the song was also nominated for Record of the Year.

Both nominations lost: Best Pop Vocal Performance went to Carpenters by The Carpenters, and Record of the Year went to "It's Too Late" by Carole King. The track was the band's second of three career No. 1 hits, following "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" in 1970 and preceding "Black & White" in 1972. Dozens of artists have recorded the song over the decades, but the Three Dog Night version remains the definitive one.

What Does Elizabeth Smart Do For Exercise?

In a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, Smart revealed her bodybuilding routine.

"I lift probably five to six times a week. It’s maybe 45 minutes. And then I aim for 10,000 steps a day—that can just be running my kids around and cleaning around the house, or it might be walking my dog or maybe the treadmill for a little bit if I had a lazier day," Smart shared. "And then I macro count [track grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates href="https://parade.com/1099736/ashleylauretta/can-you-eat-too-much-protein/"]. I have a coach, and she sends me meal plans. It’s always very protein heavy."

A former marathon runner, Smart was looking to embrace something physical that was far outside her comfort zone. But no matter what, she likes pushing herself.

"Taking on any kind of challenge in my life reminds me of how strong I am. When I was running and I’d get to mile 19 and I’d just want to give up, my mind would go to: Elizabeth, you survived nine months of kidnapping. You can finish this marathon. You are stronger than you think you are. So stop complaining and just keep putting one foot in front of the other," she added.

What is Elizabeth Smart's Diet Like?

When asked if she pares down her diet before a competition to slim down, Smart made it clear that it's quite the opposite.

"Oh, my heavens, no. Before this last competition, I probably was eating 2,500 calories a day. So much rice, so much chicken, to the point that I felt sick," she shared, noting that since becoming a bodybuilder, she dropped about three sizes and lost about 30 pounds.

Of course, she still indulges in junk food, admitting that after her first show, she enjoys everything from Nerds Clusters and tacos to "a giant piece of cake" right after a bodybuilding show.

System of a Down, the Grammy-winning metal rock band, once again proved its influence in the music scene with an extraordinary milestone.

The quartet, consisting of core members Serj Tankian on lead vocals, Daron Malakian on guitar, Shavo Odadjian on bass and John Dolmayan on drums proudly announced another achievement on the Billions Club.

This refers to the musical achievement by an artist, a band or a group where a single track accumulates over 1,000,000,000 plays on the streaming platform.

In an Instagram post, the band officially surpassed two billion streams on Spotify for their song “Chop Suey.”

“2 Billion+ Streams of ‘Chop Suey!’ Thank you,” the caption reads.

Released in 2001 as the lead single from their second studio album, Toxicity, “Chop Suey” became the anthem of System of a Down, leading to massive commercial success.

While the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart along with their two other albums, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, the four-member group also scored their first Grammy nomination in 2002 for Best Metal Performance.

One of the producer, Rick Rubin, previously recalled how the track became SOAD’s breakout hit and why it was iconic.

“It’s an unusual song because the verse is so frantic,” he told Far Out Magazine. “The style is so broken up and unusual. It’s both difficult to sing and arguably difficult to listen to, but then the chorus is this big, soaring, emotional, surging, beautiful thing. It’s just real heavy, biblical and grand. It’s so unusual that it goes between these crazy rhythmic explosive verses and this emotional, anthemic ending.”

However, amid its popularity, the track also faced criticism due to the song’s lyrics and the unfortunate timing of its release.

The song’s debut, which was just a month before the incident, marked a controversial moment in history following the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center, now often referred to as "Ground Zero.”

Due to this, “Chop Suey” was banned from radio airplay by Clear Channel Communications, the country's largest radio conglomerate, now known as iHeartMedia, along with over 160 tracks that fell under the "post-9/11 list of lyrically questionable songs."

Despite the censorship, System of a Down continues to thrive with their signature hit which continues to be celebrated as one of the most iconic metal songs of the 2000s.

The Talking Heads are arguably one of the defining rock bands of the 1980s, and it's no small thanks to their many beloved tracks, like "Psycho Killer," "Once in a Lifetime," and "Burning Down the House." But what some classic rock fans might be surprised to learn is that only one of the band's songs ever broke into the Billboard Hot 100 chart's Top 10.

This happened in 1983 with the track "Burning Down the House." While it's definitely one of Talking Heads' most famous songs, it might not be the most popular, depending on who you ask. Despite this, the energetic new wave song released as the first official single off the band's album Speaking in Tongues remains the highest-charting of all their tracks.

"Burning Down the House" is a hyped-up, funk-filled song that can get anyone grooving, and it's been featured in a number of mainstream films, including 1984's Revenge of the Nerds and 2004's 13 Going on 30.

The song was a huge success and it soared up the music charts, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached the sixth position on Billboard's US Rock Top Tracks chart and the Top 10 in Canada and New Zealand.

In comparison, "Psycho Killer" peaked at 92 on the Billboard Hot 100, "Life During Wartime" reached 80, and the live version of "Once in a Lifetime" reached the 91st spot.

In an interview with NPR in 2023, band founder David Byrne said that he first heard the phrase "burning down the house" as a chant the crowd was saying at a Parliament-Funkadelic concert.

He explained how the song came together, saying, "The rest of it, I thought, let me see if I can make a song that is basically a lot of non-sequiturs that have a kind of emotional impact. That they have some sort of emotional resonance, but literally they don't make any sense."

Black Sabbath, helmed by the late Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, is known for their rather ominous lyrics and aesthetic. So, it should come as no surprise that one of the band's iconic songs topped the publication Far Out magazine's list of "the five most insanely creepy classic rock songs."

The ranking featured spooky songs like "The End" byThe Doors from 1967, 1992's "The Ocean Doesn’t Want Me" by Tom Waits, and Suicide's 1977 tune "‘Frankie Teardrop." According to the publication, Black Sabbath's 1970 song, also titled "Black Sabbath," from the band's debut album, is the number one "most insanely creepy classic rock song" ever released.

In an interview, the band's bassist and lyricist, Geezer Butler, shared how Osbourne ended up writing the spooky song, which mentions a creepy figure and Satan. Butler explained that he "was seriously into cult stuff [and] black magic" at the start of Black Sabbath's professional career. He also shared that he had decorated his apartment to express his interest with the occult.

"I had this little apartment which I had painted black and had all these upside down crosses all around the place, pictures of Satan everywhere," recalled Butler, now 76.

He then said Osbourne had given him this "really old 15th century old book" that "was all written in Latin," which he believed caused him to see an unpleasant spirit.

"It was all about black magic, it had all these like drawings of Satan and everything in it. And I just had a really weird feeling about it," said Butler. "And that same night, I woke up in the middle of this horrible nightmare and I just saw this like black shape at the bottom in me bed, just like staring at me. It was like a black malevolent thing, it was horrible feeling of it and I just totally freaked out."

According to Butler, after he told Osbourne about the incident, the late musician, who died in 2025 at the age of 76, immediately "came up with the lyrics to 'Black Sabbath.'"
