This Retro-Inspired Rock Star Turns 67 on April 10
If you came of age in the late ’70s and early ’80s, there’s a good chance Brian Setzer was part of your soundtrack.
The Stray Cats frontman turns 67 on April 10, and his career is one of those rare stories that feels both deeply rooted in nostalgia and still unmistakably influential today.
Setzer first burst onto the scene as the leader of Stray Cats, a band that helped bring rockabilly roaring back into the mainstream at a time when new wave and synth-pop were dominating the charts. With hits like "Stray Cat Strut" and "Rock This Town," the group carved out a sound that felt both vintage and completely fresh.
There was something instantly recognizable about Setzer’s style—slicked-back hair, a Gretsch guitar, and a sound that pulled straight from the roots of early rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t just about looking the part. His guitar work, inspired by legends like Eddie Cochran, gave those songs an edge that helped them stand out on radio and MTV alike.
By the mid-1980s, the Stray Cats had already made their mark, but Setzer wasn’t done evolving.
In the ’90s, he introduced a whole new generation to swing music with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. At a time when grunge and alternative rock were dominating, Setzer went in a completely different direction—and it worked. Songs like "Jump, Jive an' Wail" became massive hits, helping spark a broader swing revival and earning him a Grammy Award along the way.
For many fans, that era felt like lightning in a bottle. It was big band energy, flashy performances and a sense of fun that stood out in the music landscape of the time.
But what makes Setzer’s career especially enduring is how seamlessly he’s moved between eras and styles. Whether it’s rockabilly, swing or holiday music (his Christmas albums have become seasonal staples for many), there’s a throughline to everything he does: a deep appreciation for the sounds that came before him.
Now, as he celebrates his 67th birthday, Setzer represents a kind of artist you don’t see quite as often anymore. He's someone who didn’t just follow trends, but helped revive entire genres for new audiences.

Best-Selling Author's Hit Novel Ranked Among 'Best Books Ever'
Few books have become as timelessly beloved as The Princess Bride.
Written by William Goldman, the 1973 novel has now been recognized by Goodreads as one of the greatest books ever written, ranking on its list of the "Best Books Ever." This acknowledgment reflects the story's lasting popularity across generations, with readers continuing to appreciate it decades after its release.
The Princess Bride tells the tale of a romance between Princess Buttercup and a farm boy named Westley, while weaving in humor and a metafictional narrative style. Its careful combination of fairy tale and wit set it apart from the more traditional fantasy novels of the time.
Although the story was remarkably well-written and destined for success, it was not an immediate hit. Fourteen years after its release, Goldman worked with Rob Reiner to adapt the story into a film. It earned $30.9 million at the box office and only continued to grow from there, with its universal appeal leading it to become a widely cherished classic.
Goldman was already an established writer before the novel's release, having received two Academy Awards for his screenwriting. However, The Princess Bride remains one of his most recognizable works, praised for its originality and enduring charm.
Despite his success, Goldman remained open about the challenges of writing. In a 2004 interview, he shared, "One of the things I love to do when I work with young writers is to disabuse them of the notion that I know what I'm doing. I don't know what I'm doing. ... Storytelling is always tricky."
More than fifty years after its debut, The Princess Bride continues to attract new readers while maintaining a strong reputation among longtime fans, solidifying its place as one of the most celebrated books in modern literature.

1972 No. 1 Soft Rock Hit Just Surpassed 1 Billion Streams on Spotify: 'I'm Amazed and Surprised'
As rock history has proven over and over again, oftentimes a band's biggest hit is a song they didn't expect to do particularly well.
A perfect example? America's classic 1972 #1 hit, "A Horse With No Name."
As guitarist/singer Dewey Bunnell told Classic Rock in 2007, "everybody had a song called 'I Need You' in mind as the single."
"It was initially felt that 'A Horse With No Name' was good but perhaps a little too quirky," he continued. "At first it felt like a bit of a novelty song. It was a shock that it became so popular.”
Now, over 50 years after "A Horse With No Name" was released, Bunnell continues to be shocked by the song's success. In a new video posted to America's official TikTok, Bunnell took the time to thank fans for the track's most recent milestone: Passing the billion-streams mark on Spotify.
@americathebandThank you to all the listeners, thank you @Spotify, and thank you to that old horse with no name 🙏 #horsewithnoname #americaband #70smusic
♬ A Horse with No Name - America"Hi, this is Dewey Bunnell of the band America," the musician said in the clip.
"I'm amazed and surprised that I've just been informed that the song 'Horse With No Name,' which I wrote and America recorded, of course, 50-plus years ago, has surpassed the 1 billion mark on Spotify," he continued. "Thank you to all you listeners, thank you Spotify, and thank you to that old horse with no name."
Fans in the comments were thrilled to hear the news, with one calling the accomplishment "pure gold."
"Proves that music is timeless!" added a second person.
"One of the greatest songs ever written," declared someone else, with another commenter calling it the "best song ever."
Not only did Bunnell come around to the fact that "A Horse With No Name" was destined to be a hit, he's also made peace with the fact that America is associated with the soft rock genre, as he told Classic Rock.
“Being called ‘middle of the road’ used to make me flinch,” he said, “but I’d like to think that we’ve carved out our own place in music history.”
It seems Spotify users would say that's exactly what America has done.

Iconic '70s Rocker, With Classic No. 1 Hit Song, Announces Exciting News
After decades as one of rock's most influential figures, Roger Waters is stepping back into the spotlight with a major new announcement.
The Pink Floyd co-founder is introducing LEGACY: A Pink Floyd Show, a tribute performance led by his son, Harry Waters. Set to tour next year, the production will highlight music from the band's "golden era," along with select songs from Rogers' solo career.
According to Roger, the show is designed as both a celebration and a continuation of the music that shaped his career. In the Instagram announcement, he described it as "The Father's Legacy, the Son's Band," highlighting a passing of Pink Floyd's legendary music to the next generation.
But the reveal came with a twist. Rogers also issued an open call for a vocalist to join the band, noting that one key element is still missing.
"Harry's band is missing one thing. The voice I had when I was young," he said, referencing the vocal skill and range required to perform tracks like "Comfortably Numb" and "Don't Leave Me Now." He then invited fans directly to audition, calling it a serious opportunity for the right performer.
View this post on InstagramThe announcement's interactive element is drawing attention, as it gives fans a once-in-a-lifetime chance to become a part of Pink Floyd's legacy. It also reflects Roger's continued influence on the band's impact.
Rogers' place in rock music remains firmly intact. As a strong creative force behind albums like The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, he helped push the boundaries of rock and live performance throughout the 1970s.
Now, LEGACY is bringing that era back, while also giving the music a fresh perspective led by his son. Nostalgic audiences and new listeners alike will be able to hear some of rock's greatest hits live after decades of deprivation. The added audition only heightens anticipation, turning the show into something fans can actively be part of.
Even decades after Pink Floyd's peak, Rogers continues to find new ways to keep the music alive, now passing it forward to a new generation.

Why Donald Trump Has Queen Elizabeth's Final Portrait in His Mar-a-Lago Home
President Donald Trump has an affinity for the British royal family and even reportedly has one of Queen Elizabeth II’s final portraits hanging in his Mar-a-Lago home.
Queen Elizabeth sat for a portrait by the Polish-British artist Basia Kaczmarowska-Hamilton just four months before her death in September 2022 at the age of 96, author Robert Hardman explains in his new biography, Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story. The resulting painting ended up being the last official portrait of the monarch and was originally intended for London's Polish Institute. However, the Queen was thrilled with the painting and requested to keep it, according to Hardman. The original is still hanging in Windsor Castle, and a reproduction was sent to the Polish Institute.
An additional reproduction was also given to Trump, 79, by the artist because he wanted a “permanent reminder” of the monarch following her death, the biographer claims.
Copies of portrait in pastel of Her Majesty Queen Elisaberth II by Barbara Kaczmarowska-Hamilton.On the eve of Independence Day, Barbara Kaczmarowska-Hamilton, the portraitist of the Windsor and the author of the last portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, opened her latest exhibition 'London alive. Trump formally met Queen Elizabeth on two occasions during his presidency. In July 2018, Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, visited Windsor Castle for tea and a ceremonial welcome. The Trumps also partook in a formal state visit to Buckingham Palace in June 2019.
"She was so great. I wanted to hang her picture in a room where there is no one else on the wall," Trump reportedly told Hardman. The author reports that the painting now hangs above a medieval ship painting in the dining room of Trump's Florida residence.

Trump was reportedly “awestruck” by the Queen, according to former White House Russia advisor Fiona Hill in her 2021 book, There Is Nothing For You Here: Finding Opportunity in the 21st Century. She said he saw a meeting with her Majesty as a sign that he "had made it in life."
After Elizabeth’s death, Trump said in a statement he and the First Lady would "always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty's generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor."

"What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!" Trump wrote at the time on social media. "Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the great people of the United Kingdom as you honor her most meaningful life and exceptional service to the people. May God bless the Queen, may she reign forever in our hearts, and may God hold her and Prince Philip in abiding care."
It’s not as obvious if the feeling was mutual. Queen Elizabeth’s friend Monty Roberts claimed the monarch “didn’t like” Trump in the 2024 documentary The Cowboy and the Queen. Author Craig Brown’s 2024 biography on the monarch, A Voyage Around the Queen, made similar claims.
"A few weeks after President Trump's visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him ‘very rude,’” wrote Brown. “She particularly disliked the way he couldn't stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting."

Trump seemingly has the same adoration for Elizabeth’s son and the current reigning monarch, King Charles. Although the president has been butting heads with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he has expressed excitement about Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming state visit at the end of April.
“I look forward to spending time with the King, whom I greatly respect,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the palace’s announcement of the King’s trip, PBS reported. “It will be TERRIFIC!”
Despite calls to cancel the trip, both publicly and politically, Charles and Camilla are set to make their first US state visit since His Majesty ascended to the throne.
Queen Elizabeth Was 'Thrilled' Meeting Princess Lilibet During Their Only Encounter Before Her Death
Queen Elizabeth II was lucky enough to meet one of her youngest great-grandchildren, Princess Lilibet, shortly before she died in 2022.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who share son PrinceArchie and daughter Lilibet, had been living in the United States for nearly two years before their family of four made a trip to the U.K. for a series of events marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.

Robert Hardman gave details about one of the final times the royal family gathered to celebrate Elizabeth’s 70th year on the throne in his biography, Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. Her Story.
"The Queen would finally get to meet Lilibet and was thrilled, say friends, as the 1-year-old crawled around her feet," Hardman writes in his upcoming book, out May 19.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, also recalled the special meeting with Archie, now 6, and Lilibet, now 4, which marked the only time the Queen spent time in person with her great-granddaughter, before her death at the age of 96. The Duke of Sussex said he reflected on those happy memories in the days following Elizabeth’s death in September 2022.

"I also couldn’t stop picturing [the children] with Granny. The final visit. Archie making deep, chivalrous bows, his baby sister Lilibet cuddling the monarch’s shins," Harry wrote in his memoir, Spare. “‘Sweetest children,’ Granny said, sounding bemused. She’d expected them to be a bit more … American, I think? Meaning, in her mind, more rambunctious.”
While that was the final time Archie and Lilibet would spend with the monarch, Elizabeth was able to gather her other great-grandchildren at Balmoral in summer 2022.
"The Queen wanted all the great-grandchildren to come up to Balmoral at some point over that summer, even if the Sussexes might not be able to make it," Hardman writes, per an excerpt published by the Daily Mail. “She wanted to make sure that they all had a really happy memory of her,' explained a friend of the family.”
Harry has spoken extensively about his special bond with Elizabeth, whom he affectionately referred to as “granny.” He wrote more about their happy memories together in Spare.

Where Former Prince Andrew Lives Now After Being Booted From Royal Lodge
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor not only lost his royal titles amid public criticism over his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, but he was also forced to leave his residence of 20 years. Keep reading to learn about where Andrew is living now and why the eviction was a strong message to the public from the monarchy.
Where Did Prince Andrew Move From? The former Prince Andrew lived at Royal Lodge, a 30-room estate nestled in Windsor Great Park. It was built in the 1800s and used as a beloved country retreat for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the parents of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. Andrew moved into the residence with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, after Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's death in 2002.

Although Andrew stepped back from his royal duties in 2019 under the recommendation of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles took further measures to sever his brother from the royal family in 2025. Andrew came under fresh scrutiny after the release of Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, Nobody's Girl, where she alleged she had sex with Andrew when she was 17. In addition, documents released by the United States Department of Justice showed further ties between Andrew, Epstein, and Ferguson.
In October 2025, Buckingham Palace released a statement that it "initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew,” noting he would be now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The statement also specified that Andrew would be forced to move from Royal Lodge into another "private accommodation."

"These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him," the palace said at the time. "Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse."
Where Is Prince Andrew Living Now?After leaving Royal Lodge, Andrew moved into Wood Farm on Sandringham while his new home, Marsh Farm, went through extensive renovations. Wood Farm, a five-bedroom secluded estate, is a favorite of the royal family and where Prince Philip lived after he retired from his royal duties in 2017.
Wood Lodge is where Andrew was arrested in February 2026 on his 66th birthday in connection with an investigation into misconduct in public office related to his ties to Epstein. He was released after 11 hours and returned to Wood Farm under investigation.
Andrew was reportedly “dragging his feet” about leaving Wood Lodge, The Sun reported. Things came to a head when Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, were annoyed about Andrew still living at the property and they were unable to stay at the residence over Easter weekend.
The disgraced prince has reportedly officially moved into Marsh Farm, per Daily Mail, as he was seen walking his dog near the property on April 6.

Why Did King Charles Make Andrew Leave Royal Lodge?Andrew living at Royal Lodge sent a message to the public that King Charles still supported his brother, both emotionally and financially. The monarch’s actions come under public scrutiny because taxpayer dollars fund the British Royal Family, primarily through an annual payment known as the Sovereign Grant, according to the House of Commons Library. In 2024, author Robert Hardman claimed in his book, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, that Charles cut his brother off financially in the wake of public criticism.

Charles reportedly instructed the Keeper of the Privy Purse to end Andrew’s estimated $1.3 million (£1 million) a year personal allowance and stop paying for his seven-figure private security, Hardman claimed in his book, per an excerpt by the Daily Mail.
Aldi's Set of Stylish Wicker Baskets Is the Best $10 You'll Spend All Season
As we move through 2026, the shift toward organic modernism has completely redefined how we approach home organization and lifestyle styling. Interior designers are increasingly moving away from synthetic storage solutions in favor of natural materials that bring the outdoors inside. The goal is to create a sanctuary vibe within the home—a space that feels soft, layered, and deeply connected to nature. Achieving this look doesn't require a total architectural overhaul; rather, it lies in strategically placing accent pieces that offer tactile interest and a neutral palette to ground the room.
The secret to a high-end, curated space often lies in the contrast between structured silhouettes and raw, woven textures. A well-placed storage unit is one of the most effective ways to shape a room's mood, especially when the piece itself serves as a decorative focal point. By integrating elements like rattan, wicker, or woven fibers, homeowners can soften the sharp edges of modern furniture and add a much-needed layer of warmth to a bedroom, kitchen, or living area.

2000s Movie Ranked 'Worst Romantic Comedy of All Time'
Because I Said So showcased a stellar cast, including the late Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, but the storyline seemed to fall flat.
The 1990s and early 2000s, also known as the Y2K era, delivered some of the most beloved romanticcomedies. Unfortunately, one film landed at the very bottom and earned the harsh label of “worst romantic comedy of all time.”
Rotten Tomatoes, a known online review aggregation website for film and television, released a list of 35 romantic comedy films widely regarded as the worst. Landing at the top spot is the 2007 movie Because I Said So.
According to the rankings, critics noted that the rom-com film was “overly reliant on caricatures and lacking any human insight” and described it as “an unfunny, cliche-ridden mess.”
The rom-com movie received a 3 percent score on the Tomatometer, which represents the proportion of professional critics who reviewed it positively.
As for the Popcornmeter, audiences gave it a 65 percent score, an okay-to-decent rating that suggests that the movie is watchable but one that likely has noticeable flaws that kept it from being a fan favorite.
Mandy Moore, Diane Keaton and Piper Perabo arrive at the world premiere of "Because I Said So" at ArcLight Hollywood on January 30, 2007 in Hollywood, California.Other movies included in Rotten Tomatoes' “worst romantic comedy of all time” are Down to You, Saving Sara, Material Girls, A Little Bit of Heaven, Waiting for Forever, Good Luck Chuck, Gigli and The Perfect Man in the top 10.
Helmed by Michael Lehmann, the director behind the 1989 cult classic black comedy Heathers, Because I Said So focuses on a mother’s struggle to let go of her adult daughters.
Keaton took on the character of Daphne Wilder, who has three daughters, Maggie (Lauren Graham), Mae (Piper Perabo) and her youngest, Milly (Mandy Moore).
With Daphne witnessing Milly often choose the wrong man, she stepped in to avoid her daughter repeating the same mistakes.
In a previous interview, Mandy Moore shared that she had to put her “game face on” the moment she began working with Diane Keaton.
“But inside I was freaking out,” she told Hollywood, adding that she felt the need to step it up while working opposite such a legendary performer.
Despite her initial nerves, Moore revealed that Keaton ultimately made her feel “so comfortable” on set.
Besides Moore, Keaton, Perabo and Graham, the Because I Said So cast also includes Gabriel Macht as Johnny Dresden, Milly's love interest.
1975 No. 1 Hit Song Became a Timeless Breakup Anthem
In 1975, American music history changed when Glen Campbell released “Rhinestone Cowboy”, a song that would become one of the most important crossover hits of the decade.
Released on May 26, 1975, the track served as the lead single and title song of Campbell’s album of the same name. It quickly rose across both country and pop charts, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Country Singles chart, making it one of the rare songs in history to dominate both spaces at the same time.
At the height of its popularity, the song even returned to the top spot on the country chart after briefly being replaced, marking a rare chart achievement not seen since the early 1960s.

While it was not written as a traditional breakup song, its themes of longing, loneliness and survival turned it into a timeless breakup anthem for listeners who connected deeply with its message.
The song was originally written and recorded by Larry Weiss in 1974, but it was Glen Campbell’s 1975 version that turned it into a global hit.
Campbell first heard the song on the radio while touring in Australia. He felt an instant connection to its message about a performer struggling to survive while still chasing dreams of success.
After returning to the United States, he pushed to record it for Capitol Records, believing it reflected his own life in the music industry.
Music writers later noted that Campbell strongly related to the song’s emotional core, especially its focus on survival during hard times and pushing forward despite disappointment.
The lyrics describe a worn-down entertainer who still believes he will “shine” one day, even after years of struggle. This feeling of emotional endurance is what helped the song become widely interpreted as more than just a career anthem.
Glen Campbell’s heartfelt vocal delivery added even more emotional weight. His performance made the character in the song feel real, someone who is tired, but still fighting to be seen and valued.
The result was a song that worked on two levels: a story about fame and struggle, and a deeply personal emotional reflection for listeners going through their own breakups.
“Rhinestone Cowboy” became Glen Campbell’s signature song and one of the defining hits of the 1970s. It earned massive international success, topping charts in the United States, Canada, Ireland and other countries.
It was also certified Gold by the RIAA for over one million units sold, and later remained popular in the digital era, with hundreds of thousands of downloads even decades after its release.
The song’s legacy only grew stronger after Campbell’s passing in 2017, when it re-entered digital charts and continued to be streamed by new generations of listeners.
Campbell himself was already a major star before the song’s release, with hits like “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.”
Decades later, “Rhinestone Cowboy” remains a powerful reminder that emotional pain and perseverance often go hand in hand. Whether listeners interpret it as a story of fame, loneliness or heartbreak, its message continues to resonate.

Aldi Shoppers Say This Rice Alternative Is the 'Best Aldi Find' They've Ever Eaten—but It May Not Be Around for Long
Finding a good rice alternative isn't always easy, especially if rice is something you grew up eating regularly. Whether you're trying to switch things up, add more protein to your meals or want something a little different, most substitutes don't quite hit the same. The texture can be off, the flavor can feel flat, and sometimes it just doesn't work the way you need it to in everyday meals.
That's why shoppers are snatching up this Aldi find that deserves more hype. According to fans, it checks a lot of boxes, from texture to nutrition, and actually works as a stand-in for rice in real meals. However, like many Aldi Finds, it may not stick around for long, which has shoppers already thinking about stocking up.

The Aldi Find That Works as a Rice SwapThe Simply Nature Organic Tricolor Legume Rice is a plant-based alternative made from ingredients like lentil flour, chickpea flour and green pea flour. Unlike traditional rice, it goes all in on legumes, boosting protein and fiber while still hitting the spot.
Instead of turning mushy like some rice alternatives, it holds its texture well and cooks up quickly. Compared to regular white rice, it offers more protein and fiber per serving, making it appealing to anyone looking to make small swaps without completely changing their diet.
Still, it's not exactly the same as rice. It has a slightly earthy flavor from the legumes and can feel closer to small pasta, like orzo, depending on how it's cooked.

The Easiest Ways to Use It at HomeOne of the biggest reasons this product is getting rave reviews is how easy it is to work into everyday meals. Instead of trying to reinvent recipes, shoppers are using it the same way they'd use rice.
Bowls are one of the most popular options. You can pair it with proteins, sauces and vegetables to build meals that are filling and tasty. Some examples include taco bowls with ground beef, salsa and sour cream, or Mediterranean-style bowls with chicken, cucumbers and tzatziki.
You can also use it as a base for heartier dishes. Add it to chili, serve it with slow-cooked salsa chicken, or mix it into soups and salads for extra texture. Because it holds up well, it doesn't fall apart when combined with sauces or reheated later.
It can also work as a simple side dish. Keep it minimal by adding garlic, salt or sautéed vegetables to bring out the flavor without overcomplicating things.
Shoppers Say It's Worth Stocking Up http://www.floridamortgagebrokers.netby u/chestergriggs in business
It's not just about the taste—this is one of those Aldi finds that doesn't stay on shelves long.
On Reddit, one shopper called it the "best Aldi find" they've ever eaten and said they were already planning to go back and buy multiple boxes, worried it wouldn't stay on shelves. That concern isn't unfounded. Other shoppers say they've seen similar items come and go, with this one appearing as a limited-time find rather than a permanent staple.
That limited availability has created a bit of urgency. People are stocking up when they see it and hoping it eventually becomes a regular item.
Not every review is glowing. Some shoppers say they didn't love the flavor or expected it to taste more like traditional rice, but the overall response is positive, especially for those looking for a higher-protein alternative.
For now, this Aldi find is still in stores, but that can change quickly. And if the pattern holds, it might be worth grabbing a box (or a few) while you still can.

The night’s challenge required the nine chefs to channel their inner cowboys and saddle up for a true test of technique as they elevated rustic ranch-style dishes to the next level.
The winning chef was Gabrielle from Team Gordon.
She said, “I am so proud of myself. I led my team to safety on the last day that I could and it feels so damn good.”

Richard chose to send Jared into the elimination challenge, because his protein was slightly over cooked. and Nyesha chose Machete because his dish was the least effective of the three dishes on her team.
The elimination challenge was 25 minutes to make an elevated King salmon dish.
The chef that cooked his final dish in the Next Level Kitchen was Machete.
“I’m speechless,” he said initially. Then added, “I literally conquered my dreams. I came here and did it. Whether or not I made it, I’m still a winner in my book. I never cry, so for me, these are not sad tears. They’re happy tears knowing that I did it.”

1972 Breakup Anthem Ranked Among 'Top Yacht Rock Songs' of All Time Still Hits So Hard
Steely Dan is one of those bands with instantly recognizable songs. While they're considered pioneers of the yacht rock genre (even if founding member Donald Fagen doesn't particularly like being linked with the category), Steely Dan's sound is undeniably unique...and among all their tunes, one of the most distinctive would have to be "Dirty Work."
One of the standouts from their 1972 debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill (along with hit singles "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years"), "Dirty Work" stands apart from the other tracks on the record for one obvious reason, which is the identity of the lead singer.
While Fagen handled most of the lead vocals on Can't Buy a Thrill, he was worried that he didn't have the skills to manage "Dirty Work," according to American Songwriter. As a solution, he called in David Palmer, who had a more "pop-friendly" style, to sing lead on both "Dirty Work" and another track, "Brooklyn."
Palmer didn't stay with Steely Dan, but as he told writer Peter Kurtz in 2016, he was still grateful for the time he spent working with Fagen and Walter Becker.
“Donald and Walter were The Dan,” Palmer said. “The rest of us were fortunate to be there. Brilliant writers both, and yes, demanding, but the result is on the record.”
Without Palmer, Steely Dan didn't perform "Dirty Work" very often, but the song's status as a classic came as a result of frequent radio play — and, years later, appearances in TV shows and movies. Tony Soprano sang along to the song while driving in a 2001 episode of The Sopranos, effectively bringing the song right back into everybody's heads; just last year, the song appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson's Oscar-winning film One Battle After Another.
It's no surprise that Ultimate Classic Rock ranked "Dirty Work" #7 on a list of "Top 50 Yacht Rock Songs" in 2025 (or that Steely Dan showed up multiple times on the list).
"In just about three minutes, Steely Dan tells a soap-opera tale of an affair between a married woman and a man who is well aware he's being played but is too hopelessly hooked to end things," wrote UCR's Allison Rapp. "By the time the song is over, we can't help but feel sorry for the narrator who is, ostensibly, just as much part of the problem as he could be the solution. Not all yacht rock songs have happy endings."
And that's why people are still can't stop listening. At the time of this writing, "Dirty Work" has been streamed 273,708,855 times on Spotify alone.
