Kate Middleton and Prince William shared a romantic moment during a carriage ride following their 2011 wedding, according to a lip reader.

CBS News cited professional lip reader Tina Lannin in its coverage of the royal nuptials 15 years ago. Her analysis offered new insight into the couple’s private moments during the celebration.

Lannin interpreted the couple’s private comments, which were not audible to the public, throughout the ceremony. While cameras focused closely on the pair, several moments went unnoticed by viewers but were later picked up through lip-reading analysis.

One of the most romantic of these was captured as the couple sat in the open-top 1902 State Landau carriage and rode through the streets of London, back to Buckingham Palace. The carriage was the same one used by Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1981 reported the royal family's official website.

Lannin stated that Kate said to William, “You look happy.” Those three words reflected a quiet, intimate moment between the couple as they enjoyed the occasion.

Other moments captured by the lip reader included when William first saw Kate arriving at the head of the aisle at Westminster Abbey. The first words deciphered were by William's brother and best man, Prince Harry.

"Right, here she is now," Harry told his brother. As Kate met William at the altar, he told her, "You look lovely. You look beautiful."

William then reportedly joked with Kate's father, Michael Middleton, about the 1900 guests who attended the wedding ceremony at the Abbey. "We're supposed to have just a small family affair."

Later, as Kate and William made their first appearance as a married couple on the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside other senior royals such as Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, then-Prince Charles, and Camilla Parker Bowles, they exchanged more private words.

William appeared to ask Kate, "Alright? You'll be okay?" She responded, "Oh I'm fine, thank you."

The prince then commented, "There's a lot of people down here." He then told Kate, "Okay? Look at me, let's kiss, okay." They then kissed a second time, delighting the crowds in the mall below.

According to the royal family's website, Queen Elizabeth hosted a reception for the couple and their guests at Buckingham Palace in the hours after they were married. Charles hosted a private dinner for the couple that evening.

Ten minutes later, she found Florence Owens Thompson.

Thompson was just 32, a widowed mother from Oklahoma. Her family lived in a lean-to tent, surviving on frozen vegetables and birds the children killed. In a hurried ten-minute encounter, Lange took five photos. According to the photographer, she didn't ask for a name, a life story, or permission to transform Thompson into a global symbol of suffering. Lange focused on the etched lines of worry on Thompson’s face and, according to Thompson's children, even staged the way they leaned into their mother to maximize the emotional weight of the photo.

When the pictures hit the newspapers, it was an instant sensation. It achieved its political purpose: the government, moved by the family’s misery, rushed 20,000 pounds of food to the camp.

The image, now known as "Migrant Mother," became one of the most reproduced photographs in history. It appeared on stamps and became known as the Mona Lisa of the Great Depression. However, because Lange was a government employee, the photo was public domain. While the world marveled at the masterpiece, Thompson didn't get recognition. "I wish she hadn't taken my picture," Thompson remarked years later. "I can't get a penny out of it. [Lange] didn’t ask my name. She said she wouldn’t sell the pictures. She said she’d send me a copy. She never did."

Lange claimed the photo served a greater social good, proving that the Dust Bowl was a human tragedy, and not a weather report. For Thompson, that good came at the cost of her identity. For decades, she was the most recognizable face in America, but she remained entirely anonymous.

The modern discussion over filming strangers in crisis has its roots in that muddy tent in 1936 as critics say the subject provides the content, the creator gets the credit, and the audience gets to feel something without actually helping the person on the screen. For Thompson, the fame came full circle in 1983 when she was dying of cancer and unable to afford her medical bills. Her children turned to the press, revealing the woman behind the icon. The public responded by donating over $35,000 for her care.

Van Halen’s “Drop Dead Legs” is a classic rock hit with swagger and a mid-tempo groove driven by Eddie Van Halen’s righteous riff. A rock flex from thekings of guitar shred, the track is an underappreciated deep cut only the most devoted fans treat like a secret anthem.

Its biggest fan might just be EVH himself, with American Songwriter sharing that in 2009, the late guitarist and founding band member said, “One of my favorite songs of ours is ‘Drop Dead Legs.' Whether it’s a hit or not, to me, I love that song.”

Did you know this Van Halen classic was actually inspired by AC/DC? I've always thought there was a Back in Black vibe, especially with that G/B chord. But while the influence is definitely present, it's also undeniably Van Halen sounding. After sitting down to learn this a few weeks back, I was surprised by how hard it is to play. I assumed it would flow easily based off how smooth & funky it sounds when Eddie plays it, but I couldn't have been more wrong. It's a very idiosyncratic riff, twisting and bending along, like a disturbing hybrid of Malcom Young & Gumby. It's believed Edward used his 58' Flying V for this, as well as Jump, Girl Gone Bad & Hot For Teacher. It's curious that he favoured the Flying V so much on 1984, but that incredible tone he pulled speaks for itself! My guitar is tuned to match the song using Allen Garber's 'sweetened tuning for the StroboPlus HDC entitled 'DDL'. In a 2014 interview with Guitar World, the rock legend went even further, sharing his inspiration for the track’s guitar solo.

“That was inspired by AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’,” he readily admitted. “I was grooving on that beat. Although I think that ‘Drop Dead Legs’ is slower. Whatever I listen to somehow is filtered through me and comes out differently. So ‘Drop Dead Legs’ is almost a jazz version of ‘Back in Black.’ The descending progression is similar. But I put a lot more notes in there.”

Recorded at Eddie Van Halen’s 5150 Studios and released on the band’s landmark 1984 album — you know, the one with the smokin’ baby angel on its cover — the side-A closing track was never released as a single, and therefore never charted. Feats of that ilk were conquered by “Jump,” “I’ll Wait,” “Panama,” and “Hot for Teacher.” 

Still, the track became a cult classic all the same — “Drop Dead Legs” is the kind of song fans don’t just remember, they swear by.

Van Halen's New Era

The diamond-certified full-length 1984 debuted the band’s new sound, fusing hard rock with synthesizer pop sounds, but also marked the farewell of frontman David Lee Roth. Peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, the album was second only to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Today, Van Halen is back in the headlines, not with 1984, but with their Sammy Hagar debut, 5150, which finally broke into the U.K. charts with its reissue 40 years later. According to Forbes, the band’s seventh album debuted on three charts across the pond, hitting No. 51 on both the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums charts, and No. 59 on the most downloaded collections in the country.

11 Phrases That Make You Instantly Unlikable in Group Settings, Etiquette Expert Warns

You may want to avoid these sayings and phrases the next time you get together with others.

1.“I don’t mean to be rude, but…”   

If you start a conversation with this phrase, Leighton says the other person or people you're talking to already know that whatever is going to follow it is going to be cruel. And this is one of those sayings that even you know might come off as mean or rude.

"Saying a sentence that includes this phrase makes you unlikable in a group setting because you are basically admitting that you know what you're about to say is offensive or rude; it isn’t an accident," he tells Parade.

2. “Anyway…”  

Dropping “Anyway…” into a conversation can make you seem dismissive or impatient, according to Leighton. In group settings, it can make people feel unheard or unvalued, which can quietly erode your likability over time—even if your intention was just to move the conversation along.

3. “I told you so.”  

Leighton says this phrase can make you seem smug, condescending or unsympathetic, especially in front of others, as it highlights someone else’s mistake rather than offering help, which can damage relationships and make people less willing to trust or engage with you in the future.

"Etiquette prizes clear, direct and polite communication, but being passive-aggressive isn’t that," he shares. "Next time, in place of 'I told you so,' you can say something like, 'What do you think happened?'”

4. “Why are you so sensitive?”  

When it comes to sayings that make a person unlikable, this is one of them.

"'Why are you so sensitive?' dismisses the other person’s feelings and shifts the attention from the speaker’s words to the receiver’s reaction," Leighton notes. "It’s not really a question at all or a concern. Instead, it’s deflection."

5. “Calm down.”  

"I have yet to meet the person who actually calmed down when they were told to," Leighton states. "Saying this isn’t the best way to de-escalate a situation."

Instead, he points out that saying this in a group setting can make you seem dismissive or condescending, which often alienates others. Opposed to helping, it can escalate tension because it implies that someone’s feelings are overblown or not valid. And in front of a group, it can make you come across as insensitive or even controlling.

6.  “No offense, but…”  

Very similar to #1 above, this is a no-go, non-starter.

"Whenever you start a sentence with, 'No offense, but...' whatever you’re going to say next is definitely going to be offensive. You don’t get a pass just because you put a disclaimer on it," Leighton explains.

7. “I’m just being honest.”  

Leighton states that saying something like, “I’m just being honest,” can make you seem blunt, insensitive or self-righteous. Because of that, it doesn't make you appear to be very friendly or likable. While honesty is valuable, framing your words this way often comes across as an excuse for being tactless, disregarding others’ feelings and signaling that you value truth over empathy.

8. “Relax, it was just a joke.” 

"Saying 'Relax, it was just a joke' isn’t actually the reassurance people think it is," Leighton reveals. He adds that if you have to explain yourself after telling a joke, it was probably rude and that makes you unlikable. If you're in a group setting, it can make you appear contemptuous of others’ feelings and undermine your likability, even if your intention was lighthearted.

"Real humor lands on its own—explaining it can make you seem insensitive or out of touch, because it highlights that someone was hurt or offended," he says.

9. “Wow, really?” 

On the surface, this may seem like a neutral response, but according to Leighton, the tone or context can come across as sarcastic, judgmental or skeptical. In group conversations, it can make people feel mocked, which can quietly damage your likability—even if you didn’t mean to be critical. Tone and body language matter just as much as words.

Instead of saying that, he mentions there are alternatives. "Something like 'Wow, really?' can be 'What led you to that?'" he explains.

10. “I guess I'll just do it myself.”  

"Saying something like [this] is an example of a classic passive-aggressive line," Leighton shares. "Being passive-aggressive is rude and will make you unlikable if you use phrases like this when speaking with others."

11. “I’m not trying to be mean, but seriously?”  

Leighton reveals that even though this common phrase is meant to soften criticism, it often backfires. So why can it make you unlikable? He says it highlights judgment while pretending to excuse it, making you come across as sarcastic or condescending. In group settings, it can make others feel embarrassed or attacked, which quickly damages your likability.

How To Avoid These Phrases Altogether—in Groups or Just in General

To avoid saying these likability-killing phrases, one simple strategy is to pause and think before you speak. As Leighton notes, "Just take a beat before you respond. No response is sometimes the best response of all." This gives you a moment to prevent averse or sarcastic comments, like “Anyway…” or “Calm down.”

Another tactic is to be clear and confident with your words.

"Own your opinions and don’t add disclaimers," he shares. "If your feedback or observation, just say it directly."

In other words, speaking directly and respectfully—without prefaces like, “I’m just being honest” or “I’m not trying to be mean”—helps you communicate effectively and remain likable in both groups and one-on-one interactions.

How To Become More Likable in a Group

Showing genuine interest and respect for others’ perspectives is key to being likable in a group setting.

"Using a phrase like, 'Tell me more about that,' signals that you’re listening actively and genuinely care about what others have to say," Leighton expresses. "People like people who make them feel seen, and showing genuine interest in others is a good way to do that."

Acknowledging others’ ideas also strengthens connections when you're in a group and makes you more likable. He mentions that something similar to, “That’s a great point. I hadn’t thought of it that way," is another alternative, as it shows you’re open to having your views challenged.

"It’s important to realize that your way isn’t always the only way," he shares. "Showing that you’re willing to have your beliefs challenged shows confidence and intellectual honesty when you're with others. It also makes the other person/people feel validated, too."

One more thing Leighton recommends throwing into a convo to make you appear more friendly is to invite participation.

"Try including a statement like, 'What do you think?'" he suggests. "It is simple, but often overlooked. Asking for others’ opinions shows that you value their input, and in group settings, it helps bring quieter people into the conversation—something good social etiquette always encourages."

Lastly, he points out the value of humility.

"You'll be surprised how saying, 'I don’t know, what are your thoughts?' can make you more likeable," he reveals. "Admitting when you don’t know something is a strength and lets other people weigh in who might."

James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” comes from a deeply personal place. It captures the loss of a friend and Taylor's struggles during a turbulent time in his life.

According to U Discover Music, the heartfelt song is ranked one of the decade's best in the Adult/Album Oriented Rock category. It's unofficially listed at No. 3 after Eagles' "Hotel California," Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now," and just before Patti Smith's "Because the Night."

Taylor wrote the song in 1968. Each of the song's verses deal with a difficult subject in the singer/songwriter's life.

The first deals with the loss of a friend named Susanne. The second addresses the musician’s addiction, and the third refers to a mental health hospital, according to NPR.

When woven together, each of these verses tells part of a deeply personal story. Combined, they capture a period shaped by loss, difficulty, and introspection.

Taylor told the outlet, "At the time, I was recording in England with The Beatles, and my friends had sort of kept the information about [Susanne's] death from me because they thought, you know, 'This is a crucial time for him, he's doing his work, and we don't want to upset him or bring him down.'"

The second verse, about drug addiction, was "when I came back to this country from London and was surprised that I'd picked up a habit. So I was physically very uncomfortable and having a rough time." The final told of his stay at a mental hospital in Stockbridge, where he checked himself in from 1965 through 1966, according to Biography.

Taylor recorded "Fire and Rain" in late 1969. It was released as the first single from the LP Sweet Baby James in 1970. 

"Fire and Rain" would ultimately hit No. 3 on the Billboard Charts. It would remain there for 16 weeks.

Taylor told NPR that writing the now-iconic song came "very, very fast. But it was a great relief. That song relieved a lot of sort of tension."

He added, " There were things that I needed to get rid of or at least get out of me or get in front of me or at least have some other relationship than feeling them internally. But it was actually a relief, like a laugh or a sigh."

James Taylor is actively touring in 2026 with his All-Star Band. He has dates scheduled from April through September in the United States.

In 1967, Procol Harum had a hit single with  “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” The debut single from the English rock band helped define the Summer of Love, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 29, 1967.

Rolling Stone ranked “A Whiter Shade of Pale” one of the greatest songs of all time. Describing the song as “a somber hymn supported by an organ theme straight out of Bach... Procol Harum’s 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' was unlike anything else on the radio in 1967.”

More than  50 years later, the song remains one of the most played records ever on British radio, according to The Guardian.

Not only is it one of the commercially successful singles in history, with more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” has been covered by more than 1,000 artists over the years, per American songwriter.

Procol Harum was inspired by classical music

“A Whiter Shade of Pale” was written by Keith Reid, Gary Brooker, and Matthew Fisher. The music was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Air on the G String (from Orchestral Suite No. 3) . Songwriter Reid once told Uncut magazine that he based the lyrics around one line that came into his head.

“I had the phrase ‘a whiter shade of pale.’ That was the start, and I knew it was a song,” he shared in the interview. “It’s like a jigsaw where you’ve got one piece, then you make up all the others to fit in. I was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story. With the ceiling flying away and room humming harder, I wanted to paint an image of a scene…I wasn’t trying to be mysterious with those images, I was trying to be evocative.”

Amazingly, the hit single did not appear on Procol Harum’s debut album when it was originally released in the UK in 1967.

Speaking with Classic Rock, Brooker explained that the single “had sold enormous numbers” before the full album was recorded. “I should think that everybody – I’m not exaggerating, everybody – had it,” he said of the song. “So we felt it would be cheating people to make them buy it again. That was our logic. It made perfect sense at the time.”

“I think anybody would be happy to have such a success,” he said of the band’s  No. 1 UK and sole U.S. Top 10 single.

A live version of the song was released 40 years later

Decades after “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was first released, a live version of the song was recorded in Ledreborg Castle in Denmark. The live album, Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir, was released in 2009.

The music website The Music Man noted, “Procol Harum’s ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ is said by many to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written, but when the band played it alongside the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir, it somehow became even more powerful.”

The live collaboration with the orchestral backing received more than 99 million views online, the outlet revealed.

Starbucks is counting down the days until summer and the debut of its new seasonal merch.

The international coffee giant's mango-centric spring menu may have only become available last week, but Starbucks is already teasing fans with new drinks, a returning cake pop and so much more—including not one, but two summer-inspired drinkware drops.

The first, dubbed the Road Trip Collection: Let's Take a Trip, is "inspired by summer adventure," according to the brand and it will feature staples like mugs and tumblers, as well as some more trendy and seasonally appropriate accessories. Starbucks is also launching a new collaboration with the global icon, the adorable cartoon bunny Miffy (the star of a series of beloved picture books written and illustrated by Dutch artist Dick Bruna), which includes additional drinkware and lifestyle merchandise.

As for the upcoming Starbucks x Miffy partnership, it appears Starbucks is playing into Miffy's curious nature, leaving most of the details to fans' imagination, at least for now—it did promise to share more in May.

While much of the collaboration is still being kept under wraps, what Starbucks is comfortable sharing at the moment is the suggestion that it's a totally "irresistible drinkware and lifestyle collection" that captures Miffy’s "playful curiosity and gentle charm," using it as an invitation to "slow down, sip, and savor the sweetest moments of the season."

And even with no photos of the collection just yet, fans are sure "ppl are gonna line up like sheep" for it.

When Will the New Starbucks Cups, Tumblers and Summer-Inspired Merch Drop?

Starbucks didn't explicitly say when its Road Trip-inspired collection would drop, but we would assume it would be the same day as the official release of its summer menu (Tuesday, May 12). So if you haven't grabbed one of its spring-inspired cups, consider the next couple of weeks your final countdown.

As for the Miffy collab, surprisingly, Starbucks did reveal when it would be available. While there are plenty of more details still to come, Starbucks x Miffy is due out the following Tuesday (May 19) in both the U.S. and Canada.

2023 romance novel Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner, which tells the story of two rival soccer players on the U.S. Women’s National Team who face off for the same position, but get distracted by their growing attraction to each other, is being developed as a series by Amazon MGM.

Deadline reports that the series Playing the Field will be an ensemble comedy about four players on a professional women’s soccer team in New Orleans, anchored by the romantic back-and-forth of two players on the team, captain Grace Henderson and new upstart Phoebe Matthews.

Sarah Tapscott, who previously served as a co-producer on The Sex Lives of College Girls and worked on shows like Single Parents and New Girl, will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Retired WNBA player and five-time Olympic gold medalist Sue Bird and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team darling and retired professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe will produce through their company A Touch More.

Wilsner will also executive produce the series, and took to Instagram to announce the news to fans, writing, “When I tell you this could not be in better hands, I mean it,” sharing that “Everyone working on this project is fantastic.”

Reba McEntire may be the Queen of Country, but the kindness, warmth and humor she displays onThe Voiceand Happy's Place makes it easy to forget that she's sold over 75 million records and released 25 No. 1 hits over the course of her career! From music to acting to hosting, McEntire has not only done it all, she's done it all exceptionally and is still going strong. But behind that iconic red hair and unmistakable voice is a woman whose life has been shaped by curiosity, courage and resilience.

McEntire was born on March 28, 1955 in McAlester, Oklahoma and raised on a cattle ranch. Her mom was a gifted singer, while her father was a rancher and champion steer roper. By her freshman year of high school, Reba and her siblings had formed a vocal group and were already performing at local rodeos and events.

She wasn't even out of her teens when country artist Red Steagall heard her sing the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo in 1974 and invited her to Nashville to record a demo. But a young Reba was terrified and on the car ride there, she kept making up excuses about why they should turn the car around. In her memoir—My Story—Reba revealed that her mother finally said, "If you don't want to go to Nashville, we don't have to do this. But I'm living all my dreams through you." And they continued on.

The demo Reba recorded on that trip would land her a deal with Mercury Records. For the next six years, she worked tirelessly—writing, recording, touring—and released a whopping 13 singles. Nothing seemed to move the needle, but she refused to give up. One day, she heard a song and knew she had to record it. At first, her producer told her no—thinking her voice was best suited for demos—but she fought for herself and he eventually agreed. On Oct. 2, 1982, "Can't Even Get the Blues"—Reba's 14th single—was officially released. Three months later, it became her first No. 1 hit. "It took a long time," she told Billboard in 2020. "But boy, it was worth it."

From there, Reba was off to the races with multiple platinum albums, sold-out tours and radio hits. Starting in 1984, she won Female Vocalist of the Year at the CMAs four times in a row. In 1987, she earned her first Grammy for "Whoever's in New England" and three years later, made her film debut in Tremors.

On March 15, 1991, McEntire and her band performed a private show for IBM executives in San Diego, California. After the concert, they needed to get to Fort Wayne, Indiana for their next show. However, because Reba was recovering from bronchitis, she decided to stay behind and fly out the following day. It was a decision that saved her life: Just minutes after takeoff, the chartered plane carrying her band crashed into the side of a mountain. All ten people on board were killed—seven of her band members, her tour manager Jim Hammon and both pilots.

Her heart was completely shattered. "I didn't know how I could go on," she said. She seriously considered walking away from music entirely. But instead of giving up, she channeled her grief into an album she dedicated to her fallen friends. For My Broken Heart was released on Oct. 1, 1991, and it would become one of the best-selling records of her entire career.

Since then, she's made her dazzling Broadway debut, had her own sitcom—Reba—that ran for six seasons, earned a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame and received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.
