Love 'em or leave 'em (sitting untouched on the edge of your plate), capers tend to spark strong opinions from people. These tiny green buds show up in everything from chicken piccata and pasta puttanesca to smoked salmon platters and salad dressings, bringing a burst of salty, tangy flavor wherever they go. But despite being a staple in Mediterranean cooking, capers remain one of the grocery store's most misunderstood ingredients, leaving many to wonder, "What are capers, exactly?"

Are they olives? A vegetable? Some kind of seed? And why do they taste so distinctive? According to the experts, capers are much more interesting than most shoppers realize.

To get the scoop, I spoke with several culinary pros, including award-winning Chef Massimo Vicidomini of RPM Italian in Washington, D.C. Vicidomini's culinary career includes helping L'Olivo (in Capri, Italy) earn a Michelin star, and he says capers are one of those ingredients that can completely transform a dish when used correctly.

Whether you've been cooking with capers for years or you're staring at the dusty jar in the back of your pantry wondering what to do with it, here's everything you need to know about what capers taste like, where they come from and how to use them.

What Are Capers, Exactly?

"Capers are the unopened flower buds of the caper bush, a Mediterranean plant that grows beautifully in rocky coastal climates," says Vicidomini. "The buds are picked and then preserved in salt or brine, which gives them their signature bright, savory flavor."

Andrew Ashmore, chef-partner of Beatrix and Antico Posto in Illinois, adds that capers are typically harvested by hand before they bloom and are also sun-dried before curing or pickling in brine.

Are Capers Baby Olives?

One word: No. Despite their similar appearance and briny flavor, capers are not baby olives.

Chef Katarina Petonito of The Duck & The Peach, La Collina and The Wells tells Parade that the confusion is understandable because both ingredients are processed in similar ways and often appear in the same Mediterranean dishes. However, olives are fruits that grow on olive trees, while capers are flower buds harvested from the caper bush.

What Plant Are Capers From?

"They come from the caper bush, called Capparis spinosa," says Kevin O'Donnell, chef-owner of Giusto and Mother Pizzeria in Newport, RI. The hardy plant grows throughout the Mediterranean region and is known for thriving in rocky, dry conditions where many other plants struggle.

What Do Capers Taste Like?

Mark Wilkins, director of grocery for Sprouts Farmers Market, describes capers as having a bright, tangy and slightly citrus flavor with a savory finish that adds a fresh pop to rich foods. Vicidomini agrees.

"Capers have a bold, salty, tangy flavor with a little floral and lemony sharpness," Vicidomini tells Parade. "They add brightness and depth to dishes in the same way citrus or olives can. Good capers should taste balanced—briny but not overpowering."

The exact flavor can vary depending on how they're preserved. O'Donnell says capers packed in salt often have a more floral, fruity character, while brined capers tend to taste sharper and more intensely salty.

"I prefer salted capers over brined capers," he says, "because the salt preserves their actual flavor better so they tend to be very floral and fruity vs. briney and sharp."

Do Capers Have a Fishy Taste?

Not at all! This misconception likely comes from the fact that capers frequently appear in (and very well complement) seafood recipes, particularly dishes featuring salmon, tuna and white fish.

"People sometimes associate capers with seafood dishes because they pair so naturally with fish, especially Mediterranean preparations," says Vicidomini. "But capers themselves are more briny, citrusy and savory than 'fishy.'"

Wilkins adds, "A common misconception is that capers are overpowering or taste like fish. In reality, they’re plant-based and, when used thoughtfully, provide a subtle burst of acidity and complexity that enhances rather than dominates a dish."

Where Do Capers Come From?

Capers are native to the Mediterranean region and have been used in cooking there for centuries. According to Wilkins, capers originate from areas including Italy, Spain and North Africa, where warm, dry climates allow the caper bush to thrive.

Vicidomini notes that Italy, Sicily and other parts of southern Europe are especially well-known for producing high-quality capers. At his restaurant, they even have a favorite brand.

"We use Agostino Recca Capers, an Italian brand known for quality Mediterranean capers with excellent texture and flavor," he explains. "Italian capers tend to have a cleaner, more delicate balance of salinity and acidity."

Do Capers Go Bad?

Like most preserved foods, capers have a long shelf life, but they won't last forever. Wilkins says unopened capers are shelf-stable and can be stored in a cool pantry. Once opened, however, they should be refrigerated to maintain freshness and flavor.

O'Donnell agrees, noting that capers stored properly in their original salt or brine can last a very long time under refrigeration.

Do Capers Need To Be Refrigerated?

Once opened, yes.

"It's best to refrigerate a jar of capers after it is opened," Ashmore explains. "They are preserved, so they have a very long shelf life, but they will eventually go bad."

What Are Non-Pareil Capers?

If you've ever noticed "non-pareil" on a jar label, you're looking at the smallest variety of capers available.

"Non-pareil capers are the smallest, most delicate variety, prized for their tender texture and more refined, nuanced flavor," Wilkins explains. "They’re often considered the premium option for both home cooks and chefs."

Ashmore adds that these are typically harvested earlier than larger capers and measure less than seven millimeters in diameter.

Are Capers a Vegetable or a Fruit?

Surprisingly, capers are neither. Although they're often grouped with vegetables in recipes and grocery stores, capers are technically flower buds.

"They are actually a flower bud, botanically speaking," says Petonito. She notes that if the bud is allowed to mature, it develops into a caper berry, which is considered a fruit because it contains seeds.

Are Capers Vegan?

Yes. Capers are naturally vegan. Since they're simply flower buds preserved in salt or brine, they don't contain any animal products.

Are Capers Healthy for You?

Capers may be tiny, but they contain several beneficial compounds. Wilkins says capers are naturally low in calories and contain antioxidants, including quercetin and rutin. They're also a simple way to add flavor without additional fats or sugars.

That said, capers are typically high in sodium because they're preserved in salt or brine. Ashmore notes that while capers contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, people watching their sodium intake should enjoy them in moderation.

Petonito echoes this.

"All natural foods are healthy for you...however, they are packed in salt which isn't good for people watching their sodium intake. Everything in moderation," she says.

What Are Capers Used For?

"Capers are used to brighten sauces, seafood, pasta dishes, salads and roasted vegetables," Vicidomini says. "In Italian cooking, they’re especially popular in dishes like piccata, puttanesca and Sicilian seafood preparations."

Petonito agrees, noting that she uses capers in everything from pasta sauces and salads to tartar sauce, smoked salmon plates and Mediterranean recipes. Their salty, acidic flavor makes them particularly useful for balancing rich, buttery dishes.

Where To Find Capers in a Grocery Store

Most shoppers can find capers near other brined and pickled ingredients.

According to Wilkins, capers are usually stocked in the condiment or international foods aisle, often near olives, pickles and other pantry staples.

O'Donnell notes that standard grocery stores typically carry brined capers, while specialty food stores may also offer salt-packed varieties or specialty jars.

Beginner-Friendly Caper Recipes To Try

If you're nervous about trying capers for the first time (or again), our experts have some recommendations about where to start.

"I think many people that don't enjoy capers either just haven't had good quality capers (packed in salt) or they overpowered the dish somehow rather than complimented the dish," O'Donnell tells Parade.

The chefs we spoke with agree that capers shine when they're balanced with rich ingredients that soften their briny edge and allow their bright, lemony flavor to come through.

• For a beginner-friendly introduction, Wilkins recommends a simple lemon pasta with olive oil, garlic and a small amount of capers. "In a balanced dish like this, capers add brightness and depth without overwhelming the palate," he explains.
• Vicidomini points to his Dover Sole Piccata with capers and brown butter. "When capers are balanced properly with butter, lemon, and good fish, they become incredibly elegant rather than overpowering," he explains. "A lot of people who think they dislike capers have only had overly salty versions used too aggressively." In a well-made piccata sauce, he says, capers add brightness and complexity without taking over the dish.
• Ashmore agrees that classic Italian dishes are often the best introduction. He recommends Beatrix's Enlightened Caesar Salad, where capers act as a subtle secret ingredient that adds interest without dominating the other flavors.
• Ashmore also suggests Chicken Piccata from Antico Posto, noting that capers help season the rich, buttery sauce with their signature lemony brininess.

The takeaway? If you think you don't like capers, don't write them off just yet. Try them in a well-balanced pasta, Caesar salad or piccata dish first. You may just discover that these tiny flower buds are far more nuanced than you realized.

Gene Simmons, the legendary co-founder of KISS and one of rock music’s most recognizable performers, is bringing his solo band to Wisconsin later this year for what organizers describe as a rare opportunity for fans to experience the rock icon up close.

The EPIC Event Center in Ashwaubenon announced that The Gene Simmons Band will perform on Nov. 5, 2026, alongside local favorites Bad Habitz. 

The venue called the upcoming show “one of those ‘tell your friends you were there’ nights,” highlighting the intimate setting that differs from the arena-sized performances Simmons became famous for during his decades with KISS.

Tickets for the concert go on sale June 5 at 10 a.m.

Simmons remains one of the most influential figures in rock music history. Known worldwide as “The Demon,” he helped build KISS into one of the biggest bands of the 1970s and beyond.

Along with bandmates Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, Simmons transformed the group into a global phenomenon through its music, theatrical stage shows and groundbreaking merchandise empire.

The announcement comes as Simmons continues an active touring schedule with The Gene Simmons Band following KISS’ farewell run, which concluded in 2023 after the End of the Road World Tour.

While KISS officially ended its touring career in 2023, Simmons has shown no signs of slowing down.

The 76-year-old bassist and vocalist continues performing with The Gene Simmons Band, which features guitarist Brent Woods, guitarist Zach Throne and drummer Brian Tichy. The group performs a mix of classic KISS songs, deeper cuts from the band’s catalog and select covers.

The Wisconsin concert announcement adds another milestone to a career that has spanned more than five decades.

Born in Israel as Chaim Witz, Simmons moved to the United States as a child before eventually co-founding KISS in 1973. The band achieved mainstream success with albums including Destroyer, the 1976 release that helped launch KISS into superstardom.

The album became one of the most important records in the band’s history, featuring songs that helped define the group's larger-than-life image and rock sound.

Beyond music, Simmons built a reputation as a businessman, television personality, producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of KISS in 2014 and was honored as part of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2025 alongside fellow KISS founders.

For fans in Wisconsin, the Nov. 5 show offers a rare chance to see one of rock music’s most enduring figures in a smaller venue environment.

In case no one told you today, you’re the best. Sometimes explicitly stated hyperbole is the only way to do a moment justice. Such is the case with the ultimate ’80s time capsule, The Karate Kid, which features Joe "Bean" Esposito’s hype track of the same name in one of the greatest movie montages of all time.

Released in June 1984, The Karate Kid — co-starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, and Elisabeth Shue — was a massive box office success, grossing more than $130 million worldwide and becoming a fixture of ’80s pop culture that spawned a multigenerational franchise. But for all its legacy, it’s the film's signature song that remains the most enduring.

When Esposito’s “You’re the Best” hits the airwaves, it instantly conjures memories of the underdog Jersey kid in a red hoodie, Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), taking on the big, bad bully that is Johnny Lawrence (Zabka). With its upbeat, synth-rock sound and infectious lyrics breaking for the soaring chorus, you can’t help but be whisked right back to the All-Valley Tournament where Daniel and Johnny advance through their brackets before facing off in a final showdown. 

The power anthem is what movie montages were made for. So, it might come as a shock to learn the motivational hit was shunned … twice. 

Composed by Bill Conti and written byAllee Willis, the song was originally intended for Rocky III, with lyrics penned specifically for victory in the ring. In 1982, however, Sly wanted a more contemporary sound to appeal to a younger audience and went with Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” instead. The track was rejected again — by Flashdance, which chose Michael Sembello’s “Maniac” as its signature — before finally finding its rightful place.

Director John Avildsen, who helmed the original Rocky, loved the song so much he secured it for the climactic montage in his new underdog film, where it became immortal. Though Esposito can’t really put into words the impact of the song, he did tell Popdose, “I’m thrilled to have been a part of it — it gives me a little something back for all the years I put in.”

The song received a massive boost in recent years when Netflix’s genius spinoff series, Cobra Kai, turned the tables on the aggressive “Way of the Fist” dojo, allowing Esposito’s track to reach a new generation on the streaming platform and others like Spotify.

Its pop-culture legacy also includes appearances in films like The Wedding Ringer (2015), Nacho Mountain (2009), and Big Stan (2007), as well as hit series such as The Simpsons ("A Father's Watch" in 2017), The Goldbergs ("The Kara-te Kid" in 2017), and Brooklyn Nine-Nine ("Operation: Broken Feather" in 2014).

Once a hand-me-down track, “You’re the Best” has become shorthand for “getting in the zone.” According to Songfacts, Esposito still sings it live as a popular act in Las Vegas, proving that more than four decades later, the Sweep the Leg-era hit remains the gold standard.

Season 5 ended with Mabel (Gomez), Oliver (Short), and Charles (Martin) discovering that their true-crime podcaster rival Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) has been murdered outside their apartment building. The trio heads across the pond to solve her crime, while getting mixed up in another.

Many fans hear "Suddenly Last Summer" by The Motels as a perfect nostalgic snapshot of summer's end. However, it might surprise you to know that lead singer-songwriter Martha Davis, 75, spent almost a decade living with that feeling before she finally wrote the song.

The Motels were a new wave band out of L.A. in the early 1980s. Their third album All Four One (1982) was released right into the early days of MTV. That year, Davis, then 31, won the "Best Performance in a Music Video" award at the American Music Awards for her performance in the "Only the Lonely" video. The Motels quickly released a fourth album Little Robbers (1983), and its first single "Suddenly Last Summer" hit No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

As Davis has shared across several interviews, "Suddenly Last Summer" came together slowly. She clocks the song's first spark back to one sunny day in her Berkeley backyard during the early '70s. Davis was going through a particularly trying time. Both her parents had died—her mom by suicide and her dad from illness—and she was young, single mom raising two daughters. When a sudden crisp wind kicked up followed by the music from the ice cream truck, she felt that twinge of melancholy. It was a knowing—that summer, like many things, will come to an end, and change will come.

"You know, things change that you can never bring back," Davis shared in an interview with The Rumpus.

About ten years later in L.A., the song finally came together in an early-morning burst: "Three o’clock in the morning I am awakened by [sings melody], it woke me up, and the song came out."

"All of the pieces that I had experienced ten years earlier in Berkeley were just manifesting themselves," she explained to American Songwriter. "I’ve never had that happen before or since. It just goes to show that all of the song fodder is these experiences in your life, stowed away in memory nooks and various places, and they decide at the time they will make themselves imminent.”

In addition to hitting No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983, "Suddenly Last Summer" topped the Billboard Rock Top Tracks chart.

More recently, despite the song's very specific, bittersweet feeling of summer ending, it's ranked No. 7 on Billboard's "Top 30 Summer Songs." It's also included on uDiscover Music's "Best Summer Songs Ever" and Ultimate Classic Rock's "Rock’s 40 Best Summer Songs." And to date, the song has 13 million streams on the Spotify streaming service.

Ten years of a feeling, one sleepless night, and a melody that arrived in its own time—that's "Suddenly Last Summer."

A longtime member of The Tonight Show band is receiving hospice care, according to TMZ.

John B. Williams, who served as a bassist in The Tonight Show band when Johnny Carson was host, is receiving “round-the-clock” care. His wife, Jessica Williams, told TMZ that he suffered a fall that required brain surgery due to his injuries, which were further complicated by his dementia diagnosis.

John joined The Tonight Show in 1972 and was part of the band for seven years. However, his career didn’t stop there. According to his official website, he went on to form his own group, Expectations, following what he described as a bout of “talk show burnout.”

In the late 1980s, John received an offer to join the band on The Arsenio Hall Show, where his musical range expanded even further. The new role allowed him to explore funk, acid jazz, and hip-hop, while also leading to a recurring comedic segment that became known as the “John B. Williams Poetry Moment.”

What began as a lighthearted bit on the show eventually grew into a deeper creative interest. According to his biography, it also led to opportunities in spoken word and acting after he was introduced to playwright Bradley Rand Smith, who cast him in the play Mohave alongside Michael Wolff.

John continued to perform, record music, and collaborate throughout his career, including performances alongside his wife, who is also a musician.

He celebrated his 85th birthday in February.

Helmet announced some exciting news on Tuesday.

The American alternative rock metal band originally announced their Strap It Down Tour last Wednesday via Instagram, sharing that they will be co-headlining multiple concerts around the United States alongside Down this August and early September. Spirit in the Room will also join them as supporting acts.

On Tuesday, Helmet announced on X that they are adding five more shows to their Strap It Down Tour, all taking place in August. The additional shows include stops in Nashville, Grand Rapids, Wilmington, Albany and Buffalo from Aug. 17 to 29. The Strap It Down Tour is set to kick off on Aug. 15 in Atlanta, then conclude at the Mystic Lake Amphitheater in Shakopee, Minnesota, on Sept. 4.

Presale for VIP ticket packages already happened on Tuesday, but the general sale will take place on Friday at 10 am local.

Helmet, which was created by Page Hamilton in 1989 in New York City, has released nine studio albums and two compilation albums since its formation almost 40 years ago. After releasing their debut album, Strap It Down, which was popular locally, Helmet started achieving commercial success in the late 1990s after signing with Interscope Records. Though they took a six-year hiatus due to private disputes, Hamilton revived the band in 2003 with a new lineup after moving to Los Angeles to play guitar for various artists and bands. The current lineup of Helmet now includes Hamilton, Kyle Stevenson, Dan Beeman and Dave Case.

In July 2024, Helmet went on tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their album, Betty, which is viewed as a classic in the rock community.

"People have told me — like I was talking to an engineer in Germany, and he said, 'Yeah, when we wanna kind of tune the system or get in the right vibe for mixing, we listen to Betty.' Other people said, like one guy in Australia said, 'Oh, I was at the university in Australia and they used the Betty album cover as an example of subversive art,'" Hamilton told Blabbermouth in April 2025. "And so I like that. That makes me happy."

As a liver transplant nurse at Cleveland Clinic, Hannah Fleming, who is 28 and lives in Ohio, knows that she doesn’t have a typical job. “When you are part of a transplant team, going to work is not just ‘another day at work.’ This is not just a job to me. I know what we are doing will change a person’s whole life. It’s going to change them forever,” she tells Parade.

Fleming knows that for her patients, the day they get a transplant is likely the biggest day of their lives. “My favorite part of my job is talking to patients and getting to know them a little bit before they go to sleep [before the operation]. Everybody has a story,” she says.

Her liver transplant patients are people of all ages, ranging from kids to senior adults. In addition to facilitating liver transplants, Fleming and her team also perform liver resections in people with liver cancer. “We do more than transplants, but transplants are the most common operation we do,” she explains.

Fleming’s life-saving work already makes her job special. But what makes her really unique is that Fleming has had a liver transplant herself.

A Life-Changing Call That Came Just in Time

When Fleming was born in 1998, she was very jaundiced and quickly diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare, life-threatening pediatric liver disease. “Biliary atresia is a disease of the bile ducts in the liver where the bile ducts don’t work properly,” she tells Parade. 

In an effort to treat it, she underwent a surgical treatment called a Kasai procedure. During this surgery, the blocked bile ducts are removed and a new path for bile duct drainage is created using a portion of the small intestine. Unfortunately, the treatment only lasted a couple of weeks. “Not all Kasai procedures work, and mine didn’t,” Fleming says. Because of this, she was put on the liver transplant list at just a few weeks old.

Fleming explains that in 1998, transplant surgeries were considered extremely risky and her family’s health insurance would not cover it. On top of already worrying about whether their baby would live, her parents had to figure out a way to pay for the procedure. Several months after her Kasai procedure, when Fleming was five months old, her family was at a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, raising money for her transplant surgery. While they were there, Fleming became very sick and had to be taken to the hospital.

The hospital that her family lived near couldn’t treat her there, so Fleming and her mom were air-lifted and flown by helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital, which was more equipped to treat her. Fleming’s father took the three-plus-hour drive to the hospital to meet them there. Once at the hospital, Fleming was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Her mother became friendly with another mom whose infant son was in the NICU waiting for an intestinal transplant. Over the next several months, the two moms became a support system of two, knowing that very few other parents would ever understand what they were going through.

Fleming was in the NICU for almost four months when the doctors gave her parents devastating news: Fleming wasn’t improving and it didn’t seem like a liver was going to become available in time to save her. They suggested the family go home and make baby Fleming as comfortable as she could be in her final days.

Grief-stricken and exhausted, Fleming’s mom asked the doctor if they could stay just one more night and drive home in the morning. The doctor agreed. Fleming’s mom stayed with her in the NICU and her dad went to the hospital hotel to try to get some sleep. But later that night, something miraculous happened: A call came into the nurse’s station saying that a liver had just become available. It was time to prep Fleming for surgery.

What a Liver Transplant Nurse Wants Everyone To Know About Organ Donation

When Fleming’s mom got the news about the available liver, her husband was at the hospital hotel. This was the late ‘90s and they did not have cell phones. Knowing exactly what this news meant to their family, the mom that Fleming’s mom befriended in the NICU took the hospital shuttle to the hotel to give Fleming’s dad the good news. 

Fleming’s transplant surgery went perfectly. With a new liver, she didn’t even have biliary atresia anymore. After the surgery, Fleming’s mom went to the NICU to thank her friend for finding her husband. When she couldn’t find her, she asked a nurse if she knew where she was. The nurse shared that her friend’s son had unfortunately died, so they were no longer there. 

This is one reason why Fleming is so passionate about organ donation today. “Because of my donor, I got to be a kid. I got to grow up and graduate college. I got to become a nurse. But he didn’t because he didn’t have a donor. Organ donation can change someone’s life,” she says.

Life After Her Liver Transplant

After her liver transplant, Fleming says she had a normal childhood and was as healthy as any other kid. Her parents were always very open about her health journey. She says that every year, the hospital where she had her transplant has a picnic for transplant recipients, donors and families, so she grew up going to that picnic and knowing why she was there.  But Fleming says it wasn’t until she was in middle school or high school that she truly understood the gravity of what it meant.

Learning her personal health journey made her even more interested in science and math, subjects she was already naturally interested in. Fleming says that one of her family members worked in the operating room and when she was in high school, she was able to shadow her for a day. After that, Fleming knew she wanted to work in an operating room herself one day. Now, she’s on the liver transplant team at Cleveland Clinic.

“As soon as I was in the operating room and saw a transplant, I knew this was where I was meant to be,” Fleming says. 

There’s certainly no doubt that that’s true.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey may be getting another new face as Bravo continues reshaping the franchise.

Season 15 of the long-running Bravo series is moving forward after a lengthy pause, with Melissa Gorga, Teresa Giudice, and Dolores Catania confirmed to return. But the rest of the cast is expected to look very different from the fractured Season 14 lineup.

According to TV Shows Ace, the sixth reported new cast member is Malvina Blloshmi, co-founder of Dirty Pelican Mixers. The outlet reported that Blloshmi was recently spotted at Rails Steakhouse with several cast members, fueling speculation that she is part of the new group of women joining the show.

Bravo has not officially confirmed Blloshmi or the full list of new cast members.

The outlet named the first five reported newcomers as Xiomara Laracuente, Juliette Collazo, Natia Rufolo, Vanessa Barrera, and Deeba Patel. Blloshmi is now being reported as the sixth new name.

If the reported lineup is accurate, Season 15 would feature nine women, including three returning cast members and six newcomers.

That would mark a major reset for the Bravo franchise, which ended Season 14 without a traditional reunion. At the time, Bravo and producers faced the difficult task of figuring out how to move forward after years of tension between cast members, especially the long-running feud between Giudice and Gorga.

Gorga's future on The Real Housewives of New Jersey had been one of the biggest questions heading into Season 15.

Bravo's own update also noted that Gorga and Catania had spoken about how they were feeling ahead of Season 15 filming during a conversation with Gia Giudice. The network said Gorga, Giudice, and Catania would return as cast members, with additional names to be announced later.

Fans are now wondering how she and Giudice will function in a cast filled with new personalities after years of conflict dominated the series.

There are three things guaranteed in the world today: Death, taxes, and Jeopardy! being on. Believe it or not, the iconic game show has been on the air for over 60 years (though the modern incarnation we know and love technically debuted in 1984). Under the watchful eye of Ken Jennings (who himself was a record-breaking champion), Jeopardy! puts three people's trivia skills and reflexes to the ultimate test. And so many of the greats to grace those podiums started by simply watching the show as it aired on weekdays, as millions have done for over half a century.

Final Jeopardy today was in the category "LESSER-KNOWN AMERICANS."

The clue: "By his actions after his wife died in 1898 after bearing him 6 children, William Jackson Smart inspired this annual event."

The answer: "What is Father's Day?"

It was a triple stumper on Final Jeopardy, as none of the three contestants answered correctly.

McFerrin came into the game with $16,000 next to Hamel’s $13,00 and Berkowitz’s $8,800. Hamel was the ultimate risk, if he got FJ correctly, but his decision to wager everything proved costly, as he got the answer wrong (Mother’s Day), though it was close thematically, and ended in third place with $0. 

McFerrin wagered $10,000, enough to stay ahead of Berkowitz if he doubled up, as he wagered $7,201. Both McFerrin and Berkowitz answered “March of Dimes,” ending with $5,999 and $1,599, respectively. 

McFerrin will be back on Wednesday for his third shot.

After being interrupted six times by her co-hosts, Whoopi Goldberg threw down a figurative flag when she tossed her cue cards on The View’s Hot Topics table. Following a lively discussion about Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams returning to Pro Tennis after nearly 4 years away, the hot topic turns into a spirited pickleball discussion. The long-standing queen of panel talk deliberated on the legendary tennis star returning to the game at the upcoming HSBC doubles event, amid people saying she is “too old to play.” 

After discussing non-athletes' opinions on older elite athletes, Goldberg jokingly stated “let’s see what you're doing, how are you doing with pickleball?” This opened up the gates to the spicy conversation with her co-hosts. Goldberg attempted to make a point, but all four of her cohosts (Hostin, Haines, Navarro, and Griffin) kept interrupting her.

Ana Navarro cut in during the ongoing conversation, "I feel attacked here," after Goldberg kicked off the new talking point about whether or not pickleball is considered a serious sport. Goldberg attempted to make another point as panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin emphasized "it's harder than it looks."

Ana Navarro chimed in again with “Martina La Retanova says pickleball is tennis for physically challenged youth.” Once again, Goldberg tried to continue her thoughts, before each panelist interrupted her at one point or another, bringing the total up to six interruptions. As Navarro tries to speak again, "But, I say to you people..." Goldberg immediately shut her down this time.

Growing visibly frustrated, the Color Purple star eventually threw her cue cards on the table. "Listen, hush up! Let me finish so I can close the thing up!" Goldberg said, smiling as she threw her cue cards down on the Hot Topics table.

Navarro laughed as she predicted the interaction would make "headlines tomorrow," which she was correct!

The notable moment came after the co-host's multi-segment interview with guest Dr. Jill Biden, who promoted her book, View from the East Wing, and offered updates on her husband's health. They also wished her a happy birthday before asking questions about her life after being the first lady. 

Earlier this year, hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines made similar headlines after engaging in a slapping match live on air during an April 23, 2026, episode of The View. The interaction was ironically also six times, as the co-hosts playfully slapped each other a collective total of six times during a live interview with Justin Theroux and Kate Hudson.

Headphone and audio company Marshall announced some exciting news on Wednesday.

The company revealed that they will be producing their first-ever Made of Loud UK Tour, with hardcore band Ignite and the headliners, Cancer Bats, who will be performing 16 shows around the United Kingdom this October. The lineup of concerts is set to kick off on October 12 at Dover's The Booking Hall and conclude in London on Halloween. In between, Cancer Bats, Ignite and Marshall's very own band, Knives Noise, will be making stops around independent concert venues in Brighton, Southampton, Bristol, Plymouth, Cardiff, Birmingham and more.

"This tour is all about celebrating the venues and communities that keep grassroots music alive every day," Marshall wrote in their official Instagram announcement. "Come and join us for some unreal sweaty shows all in the name of supporting your local venues and scenes."

Formed in 1993, Ignite didn't break through the music industry until they released A Place Called Home in 2000. Before that, they were popular in the Southern California music scene among hardcore fans, thanks to their constant touring. The hardcore band has six studio albums, with their most recent being their self-titled album in 2022.

Ignite is currently on their summer tour around the United Kingdom and Europe. They kicked off the shows in London on April 2 and will be performing at various European music festivals in July and August.

The Orange County-based band has prided itself on playing in 55 countries and has expressed excitement over the upcoming Made of Loud Tour, commenting, "We are beyond stoked for this tour!!! 🔥❤️🔥," minutes after the announcement was made.

Meanwhile, Cancer Bats said in a statement that they "are beyond excited" to be a part of this tour.

"Playing all our favourite independent venues across the UK, with Ignite and Knives, and we end it all with a Halloween show in London! This is going to be an insane tour!" they continued.

Tickets for the Made of Loud UK Tour will go on sale on Friday at 10 am local time.

In 1977, Grateful Dead released a song unlike anything else in its catalog.

At nearly 17 minutes long, "Terrapin Station" was an ambitious suite that blended rock, folk, progressive music and storytelling into one sprawling composition. Nearly 50 years later, it remains one of the most celebrated songs the band ever recorded.

The epic track served as the centerpiece of the album Terrapin Station, which arrived during a particularly successful period for the legendary San Francisco group.

Unlike many Grateful Dead songs that evolved primarily through live performance, "Terrapin Station" was conceived as a large-scale studio project. Much of the song was written by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter, whose songwriting partnership produced many of the band's most enduring works.

Garcia and Hunter met when they were only 18 and 19 years old, respectively. "We started a folk duet called Bob and Jerry," Hunter recalled in a recent interview. "We were doing our folk thing and moved into old-timey music and bluegrass. I kind of dropped out when it moved on to the next phase, jug bands." But, the duo reunited right around the time the Grateful Dead formed, and "Terrapin Station" was just one of their many now legendary collaborations.

The composition weaves together multiple musical sections while telling a symbolic and often mysterious story involving sailors, soldiers, fate and wisdom. Like many Hunter lyrics, its meaning has been debated by fans for decades.

"There was a great storm outside and I was feeling really energized by looking at it outside the windows," said Hunter. "I was just sitting at typewriter and I put a piece of paper in and typed 'Terrapin Station.' Then I thought, 'Okay, what is this about? Oh, appeal to the muse.' And then: 'Let my inspiration flow in token lines suggesting rhythm that will not forsake me until my tale is told and done.' That is an invitation to the muse."

The recording itself represented one of the band's most ambitious studio efforts.

Producer Keith Olsen incorporated orchestral arrangements and a more polished production style than listeners typically associated with the Grateful Dead. While some longtime fans initially had mixed reactions to the studio treatment, the song itself quickly became one of the band's most treasured compositions.

Although "Terrapin Station" was far too long to become a conventional radio hit, portions of the suite received airplay on album-oriented rock stations, helping introduce the song to audiences beyond the band’s devoted fan base.

The composition would become even more important in concert.

Over the years, live performances of "Terrapin Station" became major highlights of Grateful Dead shows, with audiences often treating the opening notes as a signal that something special was about to unfold.

"It's slower [live], but that's just 'cause it's the right tempo," Garcia said in a 1977 interview. "The way we do it live is usually so wired. [Gutiarist Bob] Weir has a way of doing his songs so fast. He counts them off, and you can't really do anything about it. When it's on, it's on, and when you've got two drummers pounding away back there man, you just go with it or you get rolled over."

The song's reputation has only grown with time.

Today, many fans and critics regard it as one of the Grateful Dead's crowning artistic achievements, a work that perfectly captured the band’s willingness to take creative risks while blending storytelling, musicianship and improvisational spirit.

Nearly 50 years after its release, “Terrapin Station” remains a radio classic and a cornerstone of the Grateful Dead legacy, proving that even a 17-minute song can leave a lasting mark on rock history.
