2012's 'Bring Up the Bodies' Named the 'Best Novel of the 21st Century'
It's not very often that a sequel manages to surpass the original. But as The Timessaw it, best-selling writer Hilary Mantel managed to truly outdo herself with the release of her critically acclaimed 2012 novel, Bring Up the Bodies.
The direct sequel to her equally popular 2009 novel Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies acts as an historical drama that also kicks off Mantel's incredibly well-received Cromwell trilogy.
As with its earlier book and immediate follow-up (The Mirror & the Light), Mantel's book is set against the backdrop of King Henry VIII's reign in 16th century England.
Depicting the fictionalized rise of English minister Thomas Cromwell, the series focuses on the various controversies that character Henry's reign as king, most especially his six tumultuous marriages which included two divorces and two executions.
Writing about the remarkable quality of Mantel's prose, The Times admitted they originally had Wolf Hall as their pick for the best novel of the 21st century, only to settle on its sequel as the superior of the two works.
"Initially we had Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall in the top spot, and the first in her Thomas Cromwell trilogy is definitely in 'genius' territory, but we think Bring Up the Bodies is even better," The Times opined.
"As the wily Cromwell begins to plot against the queen, Mantel’s generous, expansive narrative grows sharp," the outlet continued. "She has done that almost impossible thing — to take a story that every child learns at school, and still make the reader thrum with suspense."
"Every word of the eventual execution scene is finely tuned but most powerful of all is the conclusion," The Times finished by saying, "as Cromwell comes to terms with his own mortality, and the likelihood that Henry will one day turn on him. 'There are no endings. If you think so you are deceived as to their nature. They are all beginnings. Here is one.'"

Iconic ’90s Actor Released One-Hit Wonder Amid Film Career
Patrick Swayze was already a household name in Hollywood in the 1980s after landing roles in The Outsiders and Red Dawn. However, Dirty Dancing marked a pivotal turning point in his career, cementing his status as a global icon.
While making waves on the big screen, the now-legendary star reached an unexpected milestone after making an impact in the music industry.
In December 1987, Swayze released "She's Like the Wind" as the second single from the soundtrack of his movie Dirty Dancing.
Initially intended for the movie Grandview, U.S.A., which stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Swayze, he co-wrote the song together with composer and songwriter Stacy Widelitz, as cited by Smooth Radio.
At the time, the song was not chosen as part of the movie’s soundtrack, but the actor played the demo for producer Linda Gottlieb and director Emile Ardolino during the production of Dirty Dancing.

To better highlight the film’s tone, the song was re-recorded as a power ballad and featured in the emotional scene where Johnny Castle, played by Swayze, and Baby Houseman, portrayed by Jennifer Grey, part ways in the middle of the story.
During the recording, the producers predicted that “She's Like the Wind” would not just be a song by Swayze but a “major hit,” a prediction that ultimately proved true.
“Before the session started, Michael turned to me and asked if I knew what we were doing today,” the Golden Globe nominee said, as mentioned by Stacy Widelitz on her website, adding, “Puzzled, I said we’re recording ‘She’s Like the Wind.’ He said, ‘No! We’re recording a major hit song!’ I asked him to call my mother and tell her that, as she still didn’t believe I could make a living in music. Buddy recorded his vocals the next day, and Wendy recreated the part she did on the demo. Michael added some great touches, such as the repeated “Just a fool, she’s like the wind” for the fadeout, along with sleigh bells. It sounded great.”

In addition, “She's Like the Wind” reached the top three on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained in the top-10 rankings for several weeks.
Although Swayze remained a Hollywood icon, starring in another hit movie Ghost, “She's Like the Wind” was later remembered as a one-hit wonder and a lesser-known chapter in the life of the icon.

New York Times Names 2010 Bestseller 'Warmth of Other Suns' One of the 'Best Books of the 21st Century'
There's nothing like picking up a worthwhile book and finding yourself lost in the pages therein.
Whisking readers away to new worlds, new time periods and new situations beyond their wildest imaginations, a good book can make the hours fly by with the speed of seconds, leaving most individuals flicking through the pages thoroughly engaged throughout.
Yet even with how many truly remarkable books out there, few works have earned the distinction of being named "one of the best novels of the 21st century" by The New York Times, an honor bestowed on only a handful of worthwhile pieces.
Interestingly, one of the books featured at the very top of The New York Times' list is none other than a 2010 nonfiction book, The Warmth of Other Suns, by best-selling author Isabel Wilkerson.
A "compulsively readable" historical book, The Warmth of Other Suns specifically explores the Great Migration of the 1910s through the 1970s, a period where over five million Black Americans fled to the Northeast and Midwest in the hopes of avoiding the racial segregation of the American South.
The winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, The Warmth of Other Suns was also repeatedly featured on various lists for the best book of 2010, as well as The NY Times Notable Book of the Year.
Today, it's ranked as the best book of the 21st by The New York Times, just one spot behind the similarly remarkable novel, My Brilliant Friend.
Among other honors, the book was praised by the legendary author Toni Morrison as "profound, necessary and a delight to read, while equally well-respected TV personality Tom Brokaw called it "an epic for all Americans who want to understand the making of our modern nation."

'The Way Home' Star Chyler Leigh Teases Emotional Final Season: 'Every Answer Leads to Another Question' (Exclusive)
As Hallmark’s The Way Home heads into its fourth and final season, it’s time to say goodbye to its beloved time-traveling characters – and to the tight-knit cast behind them, including Chyler Leigh, who plays Kat Landry.
Leigh, whose TV credits include Grey’s Anatomy, knows that the adoring fans lobbied for more seasons. Still, she believes the final chapter will deliver exactly what viewers have been hoping for. Season 4 consists of 10 episodes and premieres on Sunday, April 19.
“We learned early on that our show could heal people, relationships, and families,” Leigh exclusively told Parade.
“We heard from viewers that they felt healing from grief, anger, resentment, and bitterness,” she said. “Sometimes life is more than you expected, but you keep going. You keep moving forward. You don’t stop.”

The Way Home follows three generations of Landry women: matriarch Del (Andie MacDowell), her formerly estranged daughter, Kat (Leigh), and Kat’s teenage daughter, Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow).
At the start of the series, Kat and Alice return to the family farm in Canada for a fresh start after Kat's divorce, where Kat reconnects and eventually falls in love with her childhood friend Elliot (Evan Williams).

Amid family tensions, long-buried secrets, and shifting relationships lies the show’s signature twist: a mysterious pond that allows Landry family members to time-travel, deepening both the mystery and the romance.
Leigh teases that Season 4 will continue that tradition. “In true The Way Home fashion, every answer leads to another question,” she said. “But by the end, the creators, writers, and actors have done everything within our power to tie these stories back together.”
The story also hits close to home. Leigh, who experienced a 22-year estrangement from her own mother, says she deeply relates to the show’s exploration of complicated generational relationships. And as the mother of two teenage daughters, similar to Kat and Alice, she personally connected to the fabric of The Way Home.
“It’s like the evolution of being a woman — being both a mother and a daughter,” she said. “It goes to show the things that we can change and how you can’t change the past. That’s the major theme of The Way Home, too. “
That message resonates strongly for Leigh. What The Way Home tells us is, “Learn from the heartache. Carry the good times forward. Love each other again,” she said, adding that “the ferocity of love between mothers and daughters is intense.”
What allows Leigh to get a good night's sleep is simple. “My girls know they are loved and cherished. That makes everything worth it.”

When it comes to Kat Landry, Leigh says she is taken away one defining trait: resilience.
She also found Kat’s evolving relationship with Del especially powerful. “Those conversations in Season 4 are incredibly cathartic,” she said. “The experience of this series has been extremely cathartic. Kat will live in me forever; I will always hold a piece of her in my heart.”
Saying goodbye, however, won’t be easy. “I don’t ever want to say goodbye,” Leigh admitted. Still, she took home a meaningful piece of the show: Kat’s portrait, entitled 'My Katherine,' from the Lingermore estate, which is now displayed proudly above Leigh's fireplace. “It represents where Kat was, her heartache, and how hard she worked on herself,” she said.

As for Kat and Elliot, fans are hoping for a long-awaited happy ending—and Leigh shares that hope. “What I love is that you see the love and maturity in their relationship,” she said. “But you also see that now there is a genuine sense of comfort between the two. Especially in the little things, like a simple goodbye kiss.”

Those small moments, she added, reflect how much they’ve grown individually and as a couple. “They’ve always fought for each other, and that hasn’t changed.”
Leigh also appreciates Elliot’s bond with her TV daughter, Alice. “It’s incredible. I love that storyline,” she said. “And working with Evan Williams, I couldn’t imagine doing this with anyone else.”
Though she’s sad to see the series end, Leigh is confident fans will feel satisfied when the final episode comes to a close.
“I love that the audience will see how hard we worked, and that they’ll get real closure,” she said. “You’ll see Kat and Elliot having fun in unexpected ways. And because it’s Hallmark, there will absolutely be love and growth!”

1965 Hit Track Won an Oscar for 'Best Original Song' 61 Years Ago Today
In 1965, the Hollywood power couple,Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, starred in an American drama film that was a box office success. Its main theme song, with music by Johnny Mandel and lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, ended up winning an Oscar and more.
The two actors starred in Vincente Minnelli's The Sandpiper, which dominated the box office, having made over $13 million against its $5 million budget. Taylor played the leading role of artist Laura Reynolds, while Burton played boarding school headmaster Dr. Edward Hewitt. The drama's storyline focused on Laura's son being sent to boarding school instead of reform school to deal with his legal trouble.
While Dr. Hewitt is "happily" married, there's a spark between him and Laura. The Sandpiper explored the relationship between the repressed religious-school headmaster and the free-spirited artist. The film also took on the theme and details of the beatnik and hippie movement of the 60s.

The Sandpiper wasn't a hit among the critics, despite having done well at the box office. Instead, what gained notable acclaim was the movie's theme song, "The Shadow of Your Smile." It was originally introduced in the film as an instrumental version with an uncredited chorus group. Jazz trumpeter Jack Sheldon is also heard on the track with a solo. At the 1965 Academy Awards, the popular track ended up winning for Best Original Song against "The Ballad of Cat Ballou" (Cat Ballou), "I Will Wait for You" (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), "The Sweetheart Tree" (The Great Race), and "What's New Pussycat?" (What's New Pussycat?).
The track gained more critical acclaim when it was covered by legendary singer Tony Bennettas part of his The Movie Song Album in 1966. It ended up entering the Billboard Hot 100 charts at No. 95 and won a Grammy for Song of the Year. Its popularity led the American Film Institute to tag it as one of the top tracks in American cinema.
Since the 1965 film and 1966 cover, "The Shadow of Your Smile" has been covered by other known artists. Brazilian and American singer Astrud Gilberto covered the track, alongside Wes Montgomery, in 1965. Alongside Bennett, Hampton Hawes, and Oscar Peterson released their versions. Other covers have largely been done by jazz artists like Bill Evans,Benny Carter, and Hank Jones.
French Actress Nadia Fares Dead at 57 After Drowning
French actress Nadia Fares, perhaps best known for her roles in films such as The Crimson River and Storm Warning, died at the age of 57.
Fares was found unresponsive in a gym swimming pool on Saturday, April 11. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was placed in a medically induced coma.
"It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Nadia Fares this Friday," Fares' daughters said in a statement to AFP, per The Independent. "France has lost a great artist, but for us, it is above all a mother we have just lost."
The actress was reportedly swimming laps in a pool when she suddenly lost consciousness, The U.S. Sun reported.
Fares rose to fame in the early 2000s after starring in Mathieu Kassovitz's film, The Crimson River, which was based on the Jean-Christophe Grangé novel of the same name. She would later make her mark on Hollywood starring alongside Jason Statham and Jet Li in the 2007 film Storm Warning.

The Morning Habit People Over 50 Should Break Immediately, According to Cardiologists
Once you run the corner on 50, taking care of your heart becomes more important. The average age of a first heart attack is around 65 years old for men and 72 years old for women, according to the American Heart Association. However, heart attacks don't happen out of the blue, despite what you might see in the movies. Other cardiovascular conditions, like hypertension and high cholesterol, can develop much sooner and put you at a greater risk for having a heart attack.
Genetics plays a role in heart health, but so do things within our control, including our habits. Cardiologists agree that morning is a unique time for the heart.
"Morning habits matter because your body experiences a natural surge in blood pressure and stress hormones after waking, increasing the risk of cardiovascular events over time," explains Dr. Karishma Patwa, MD, a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology in NYC and labfinder.com contributor.
On the flipside, you can build a healthier heart through positive habits.
"A calm, structured start promotes physiologic stability, while a reactive, stress-driven start tends to persist throughout the day," says Dr. Gregory Mishkel, MD, a cardiologist and physician executive of the Endeavor Health Cardiovascular Institute. "It functions much like setting a thermostat—the system tends to maintain the level you establish early."
Unfortunately, cardiologists say one piece of your morning routine isn't doing your heart any favors, especially if you're 50+. Here's the morning habit people over 50 should stop doing immediately.

The Worst Morning Habit for Heart Health Over 50, According to CardiologistsWitthaya Prasongsin/Getty Images
Stop scrolling through social media, the news and, yes, your work email, on your phone immediately after waking up.
"Our body follows natural circadian rhythms that govern our daily cycle," explains Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, MD, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center. "Stressful activities when you first wake up, such as high-stress activities on your phone, can affect these rhythms, and potentially affect your heart health."
Dr. Mishkel agrees and advises against checking high-stress things on your phone, like the news, when you wake up.
"It creates an immediate and unnecessary stress response," he says. "Emails, news and social media often trigger urgency and anxiety, activating both the sympathetic nervous system and the 'hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal' axis. The result is increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure and higher cortisol levels. In effect, you are placing your cardiovascular system into 'fight-or-flight' mode before the day has even begun."
Dr. Mishkel suggests avoiding checking your phone for at least 20 to 30 minutes after waking up to prevent the early surge in cortisol and sympathetic activation.

How Stress Impacts the HeartWe often talk about how diet, exercise and smoking can affect the heart. Stress can get pigeonholed as a "mental health" problem only, but it's more than that.
"Stress, in the short-term, activates your body’s fight or flight response, which causes faster heart rates, high blood pressure and feelings of discomfort," Dr. Patwa says.
She notes that these uncomfortable feelings may include:
- Jitteriness
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
"In more extreme cases, acute stress can trigger conditions such as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a condition known as a 'broken heart,' which mimics symptoms of a heart attack but is purely caused by an acute stress reaction," Dr. Mishkel says. "Over the long term, chronic stress acts as a risk multiplier."
Dr. Mishkel says stress can contribute to:
- Sustained hypertension
- Damage to the linings of blood vessels—known as endothelial dysfunction
- Inflammation
- Accelerated atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries and build-up of plaque).
- Arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation
- Increased heart attack and stroke risk
"Stress does not act in isolation—it amplifies existing cardiovascular risk factors," Dr. Mishkel states.
To be clear, we all experience stress. Waking up to an "oh-crap" moment that you slept through an alarm and are late for work once is unlikely to cause an issue. "Stress is unavoidable—but how we engage with it, especially at the start of the day, is a choice," he shares. "Small changes in morning habits can have a meaningful impact on long-term heart health."
In other words, you don't actually have to check X or TikTok before you get out of bed every single morning (or ever).

A 3-Step Heart-Healthy Morning RoutineMorning routines matter for heart health, so make sure yours is benefiting you. "The first 30–60 minutes of the day influence autonomic balance, blood pressure patterns and stress hormone levels," Dr. Mishkel says.
To build a morning routine that supports your heart, cardiologists suggest:
- Engaging in controlled breathing or quiet time for five minutes. Dr. Mishkel recommends slow breathing, meditation or simply sitting quietly to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and lower heart rate and blood pressure.
- Filling up. Dr. Chen advises that you reach for water first thing, rather than your phone, to lower your risk of starting your day dehydrated. "I also recommend that people eat a well-balanced, heart-healthy breakfast rich in fiber, as this will set the stage for a nutritious day," Dr. Chen says.
- Getting in some light movement or an early morning workout. A short walk, stretching or basic mobility exercises all qualify, Dr. Mishkel says. This habit improves vascular function, regulates blood pressure and reduces stress hormone levels. That said, Dr. Mishkel shares it's important to log daily physical activity—period—regardless of when you do it.

Disney Legend Hayley Mills Is Glowing at 79 as She Recalls Meeting Walt Disney for the First Time
Hayley Mills rose to stardom as a kid in Disney films, and she's opening up about meeting Walt Disney for the first time.
The British beauty, who rose to stardom in classic children’s films like The Parent Trap and Pollyanna, sat down on The Rosebud Podcast with Gyles Brandreth and looked every bit as stunning as she was decades ago. With her classic blonde hair and beautiful smile, there’s no doubt that the English rose was the Disney film icon of the past.
When asked by Brandreth about meeting Disney for the first time, Mills recalled going to meet the legend with her family at The Dorchester and heading up to his suite in dead silence. Mills credits the family's chaotic dog, Suki, as the reason she got the Pollyanna job, because Disney had so much fun sitting on the floor playing with the pup.

On April 17, Valerie Bertinelli posted a throwback photo from when she was filming her sitcom, Hot in Cleveland. It showed her standing alongside her real son, Wolfgang Van Halen, and her on-screen son, Joe Jonas.
She captioned the photo, “2010 my son visiting the Hot in Cleveland set when someone else was playing my son. Acting is so weird.”

Now the show is back to the usual 90-minute episode followed by 30 minutes of Untucked format.
Will RuPaul's Drag Race Season 19 air on Paramount+?Not likely. At least not initially. While the All Stars version of the show premieres on Paramount+, the regular franchise airs on MTV and won't arrive on Paramount+ to stream until sometime after the full season has finished airing.
Will RuPaul's Drag Race Season 18 air on Hulu?No. While Drag Race used to have a deal with Hulu, no new seasons of the show have gone onto the streamer in a few years, as they now stream on Paramount+ instead.

Holland America Just Solved the Biggest Problem With Solo Cruising
If you've ever tried to book a solo cruise, you know the struggle is real. Between the dreaded "single supplement" fees that basically force you to pay for a ghost roommate and the tiny, windowless interior "studios" most ships offer solo travelers, it hasn't exactly been a red-carpet experience.
But Holland America Line just dropped some news that suggests the industry is finally waking up to the fact that going it alone shouldn't mean staying in a closet.
As part of a massive new fleet-wide project called Holland America Evolution, the line is rolling out a "bow-to-stern" reimagining of six of its most popular ships. While the $500 million investment covers everything from new dining spots to refreshed public spaces, the real headline for solo adventurers is the introduction of Solo Verandah staterooms.

Starting with the Oosterdam in Fall 2027, the ship is adding 30 purpose-built cabins designed specifically for one person. But here is the kicker—unlike the cramped solo cabins of the past, these are actually spacious at 200 square feet and come with their own private balconies.
It is a massive shift for a ship that currently has zero dedicated solo inventory. It means you can finally have that classic "coffee on the balcony in your robe" moment without having to pay double the price for a room built for two.
"Our guests have been very clear about what they love about our ships and what they want to see more of, and Holland America Evolution is our answer to that,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president, Holland America Line. "This investment allows us to introduce experiences and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle Class favorites like Grand Dutch Café, and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America.”
The design is clearly leaning into the "work from anywhere" lifestyle, too. Each room features a dedicated workspace and a modern, glass-walled shower, proving that "solo" doesn't have to mean "basic."
Beyond the new staterooms, as mentioned above, the Grand Dutch Café is finally making its debut on the Oosterdam, and if you’re a solo traveler, this is probably where you’ll spend half your trip. Previously a perk reserved only for the newer Pinnacle Class ships, this spot is essentially the social anchor of the vessel.
It’s styled like a classic European street café, making it the ultimate "introvert-friendly" social hub. You can snag a window seat for some prime people-watching, order a Dutch pea soup or a specialty coffee, and feel perfectly comfortable lingering with a book or a laptop. It lacks the formality of the main dining room, offering an easygoing, all-day spot to grab a snack or a local craft beer without the pressure of a timed reservation.
This move is part of a larger trend as Holland America reports a steady climb in single passengers every year. By adding 76 total new staterooms to the Oosterdam alone—including new "Bridgeview" suites—they are betting big on the idea that more choice and more privacy is exactly what modern cruisers are looking for.

Who Did Nathalie Baye Play in Downton Abbey?Baye starred in Downton Abbey: A New Era, the 2022 film that followed the iconic TV series. She played Madame Montmirail, a French aristocratic widow whose late husband was a friend of Violet Crawley. Back in 2022, Baye smiled alongside her co-stars to promote the film.

French President Emmanuel Macron made a statement upon the news of her death. Translated from French, the touching statement honored her legacy in French cinema.
"We loved Nathalie Baye so much. She accompanied, through her voice, her smiles, and her reserve, these last decades of French cinema, from François Truffaut to Tonie Marshall. An actress with whom we loved, dreamed, and grew up. We think of her family and her loved ones," Macron wrote.
