'Purple State’ by Dana Perino Is More Than a Romance — And It Makes It Worth the Read
Purple State by Dana Perino is her fictional debut, and it’s certainly marketed as a romance. At the heart of it, that’s certainly the case. However, the soul of the novel offers something much more, and it’s easy to overlook that at first.
In fact, it takes a good half of the story to really get into the romance of it all. While Dot is involved with someone at the beginning, she knows it’s not going anywhere, and so, I don’t really count that as the romance part. Instead, we get a story of life and of friendships, and I definitely didn’t expect that.
‘Purple State’ Asks What You Want to Do with Your LifeThe start of the novel brings focus to the friendship of three women in their 20s. They are all in different lines of work, but they’re close and they tell each other everything. This is the type of friendship so many women would love to have, but it’s not always that easy. Yet, I appreciate seeing it in fiction, as it’s proof that something like this can exist.
Dot, Mary, and Harper are all at a stage in their lives where they’re not all that sure about what they want. Well, Dot and Harper are. Mary seems to have it figured out, but she’s also willing to make a huge move. The stars align when they’re offered the chance to move out of New York City to Cedar Falls, Wisconsin for a few months.
That’s where the journey begins. They’re there temporarily to help with the upcoming election. The aim is to turn this purple state blue, and that means none of them are looking for love. Of course, we find love when we’re not expecting it, and that’s what happens to Dot. She doesn’t think it will at first, though, as a Democrat who is sure that she can’t have a life with a Republican.
It’s the friendship that is the soul of this story. We get to see what it means to have friends who support each other, and I’d have been happy to have remained focused on that. One of my small complaints was that the trio didn’t seem to have enough time to showcase the close friendship that they had — close enough to move to another state on almost a whim!
Courtesy of Harper Collins Publishers Can Romance Cross Party Lines?Yes, there is a cute romance at the heart of Purple State. There are political elements throughout. After all, it starts with a move to a purple state to get people to vote blue, and there are a lot of mentions of Democrats and Republicans, the past elections, and the upcoming 2028 election, and more.
If that is going to trigger you, then I would recommend skipping the novel until you’re in a place that you can think more about politics. I get it — we’re not all in a place to think about what’s to come with everything going on in the world.
Something that surprised me was seeing reviews of the novel without reading it. People on Goodreads chose to give their opinions on the plot, but that isn’t fair and it doesn’t work for this one. It’s easy to jump to conclusions, and I love that Dot does just that a lot. She is very much like many readers.
Yet, she is willing to give people a chance. She is willing to open her mind a little, and it’s a message for readers throughout. There’s a nuance to the debate, and Perino is able to offer us that.
You can tell that this is her fiction debut, but that she’s also a writer to watch. The characters and some arcs could do with a little more development. As I said, I would have loved to see more of the friendship, but I also think the characters themselves need a few more layers. However, it’s a great start, and the story is believable rather than the Hallmark Christmas movies that you can sometimes end up rolling your eyes at.
Perino is able to find a good balance between the story and the politics. It doesn’t get preachy, but it still touches on important topics, and that’s not an easy task. Perino is an author to look out for.
'Farmer Wants a Wife' Star's Grandfather Had a Hit Song With Willie Nelson
As Farmer Wants a Wife season 4 gets underway, one contestant is already sparking curiosity with a surprising family connection to country music history.
Carsyn Hughes, one of the women vying for love this season, hints at it in her official bio, writing: “My grandfather wrote and performed some of the biggest country hits of his time.”
So who was he?
Carsyn’s grandfather was Ronald “Ronny” Goff Hughes, a longtime Nashville musician, songwriter and performer who worked with a wide range of country stars throughout his career.
According to his 2023 obituary, Hughes was already performing as a lead singer and guitarist before he could even drive, fronting a band called The Prodigys alongside his brothers. His talent quickly opened doors in the industry, and he went on to play bass and collaborate with artists including Hank Williams Jr., Jerry Reed and Porter Waggoner, among others.
Hughes also spent time performing on the Grand Ole Opry as part of The Vic Willis Trio, while building a career as a studio musician, songwriter and publisher. Over the years, he contributed to hundreds of recordings, becoming part of the fabric of Nashville’s music scene.
He was also connected to Danny Davis & The Nashville Brass, a group that found chart success with collaborations including a 1980 Top 20 country hit with Willie Nelson called "Night Life."
Following his death in 2023, Danny Davis & The Nashville Brass paid tribute on social media, writing, “Remembering original band bass guitarist, Ronnie Hughes who passed away November 22, 2023.” In the comments, a fan clarified that Hughes was part of the group’s touring “original band” — a term used for the core musicians who regularly performed with the ensemble from the late 1960s through the early 2000s.
Beyond his work in the industry, Hughes remained deeply connected to his faith and community, often sharing his music through church worship teams across Tennessee.
He died on November 22, 2023, at the age of 73.

Joe Buck Set To Host Upcoming ‘Jeopardy!’ Spinoff
I’ll take “newest Jeopardy! spin-offs” for $500, please.
The most recent addition to the Jeopardy! universe is ESPN Jeopardy!. The new series will ask sports-based trivia in the iconic reverse answer-question format.
JoeBuck, lead play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football, was revealed to be the game show's host by Front Office Sports.
But Buck is not new to the Jeopardy! stage. He guest-hosted the game show in 2021 after the death of former host AlexTrebek.
The spin-off host has been the announcer for Monday Night Football since March 2022 and has worked in broadcast sports for over 30 years. Buck has called 33 conservative NFL seasons, as well as 24 World Series, 22 MLB All-Star games, and five golf U.S. Opens.
The original series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, and for the sports version, the production company is working with ESPN. It is expected to stream on Disney+ and Hulu this summer.
The show will use the sports network’s talent to compete for the grand prize of $500,000. The winner will grant the reward to their chosen charity. No contestants have been revealed yet.
This isn’t the first time the game show has attempted a sports-themed competition. The aptly named series Sports Jeopardy! aired on the (now bankrupt) Sony-owned streaming service Crackle. The show ran from 2014 to 2016 but was not a success.
Other brand extensions include Rock & Roll Jeopardy! (1998 to 2001), Jep! (1998 to 2000), and Pop Culture Jeopardy! (2024). The second season of Pop Culture Jeopardy! will premiere on Netflix in May 2026.
The original game show premiered in 1964, and the current syndicated version began in 1984. The first host was ArtFleming, who held the position from 1964 to 1979. He was succeeded by Alex Trebek, who hosted from 1984 until he died in 2020. It has been hosted by the show’s highest-earning contestant, KenJennings, since 2023.
The official ESPN Jeopardy! premiere date has yet to be announced.

Beyond the Gates star Karla Mosley took to social media to share a behind-the-scenes look at an upcoming moment with co-star Daphnée Duplaix.

“I wrote a poem about a teenage love entitled ‘Angel Baby,'" Hamlin recalled years later, per Billboard. "We decided to record the song. One hot summer day in 1961 we piled into a car and headed out to San Marcos, CA. In those days San Marcos was out in the middle of nowhere. We finally arrived at this place that looked to us like an old barn. It was actually an old airplane hanger.”
The group recorded over 30 takes on a two-track machine. What happened next reads like something out of a '60s music biopic fantasy: A manager at Kresge’s Department Store in San Diego played the song, which got the attention of a distributor for Highland Records who was shopping that day. Within a few weeks, Hamlin heard DJ Alan Freed playing the song multiple times a day, which led to a record deal (Hamlin's mother had to sign for her because she was too young). Frustratingly, another member of the group, David Ponci, was originally crediting with writing the song, which kept Hamlin from earning royalties until she was able to prove she wrote it.
"Angel Baby" peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending Jan. 29, 1961, edging out Lawrence Welk’s “Calcutta."
Store managers and DJs weren't the only people who fell in love with "Angel Baby." Lennon was one of the song's most famous and passionate fans — he even recorded the song for his Rock N’ Roll album (his version wasn’t released until the posthumous Menlove Ave. compilation album).
“This here is one of my all-time favorite songs," Lennon said during his introduction to the song. "Send my love to Rosie, wherever she may be.”
Unfortunately, as Hamlin revealed in an interview on classicbands.com, she and Lennon never actually met.
“I always wanted to, but never got the chance,” she said.
Hamlin's time in the spotlight might have been brief, but it was meaningful. She was even the first Latina to be honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on their Wall of One-Hit Wonders.
Beloved '60s Musician With #1 Hits Dead at 88
In very sad news for classic rock and country music fans, Wayne Moss, the Nashville-based session musician known for his work with legends such as Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison and others, has died. He was 88 years old.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, confirmed Moss' death in a statement on social media this week.
“Wayne Moss was a guitarist of dexterous skill and sophisticated taste," the statement read. "Listen carefully to Bob Dylan’s ‘I Want You’ or Roy Orbison’s ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’ or Waylon Jennings’s ‘Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line.’ You’ll hear innovative electric lead parts that drew attention to Nashville’s world-class musicianship."
"As a studio owner, his doors were equally wide open to pop, rock, and country music," Young continued. "Wayne was a musical torchbearer and a creative pathfinder who left his own resounding stamp on music history.”
Orbison's son, Roy Orbison Jr., also honored his late father's friend in a social media post, writing, "My dear friend, the great guitarist Wayne Moss, has died. A member of 'Nashville’s A-team' of musicians, Wayne was my dad’s good friend and played on all the Roy Orbison Monument hits."
Indeed, Moss can be heard on "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Cryin'" and "Only the Lonely," in addition to such hits as Parton's "Jolene" and Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album. He worked with Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride and Joan Baez, and helped found two bands made up of other Nashville session players, Area Code 615 and Barefoot Jerry.
Wayne Moss founded an independent recording studio in NashvilleMoss even founded the independent recording studio, Cinderella Sound, where artists including the Steve Miller Band, Linda Ronstadt, Grand Funk Railroad and many others have recorded over the years.
As Moss said in an interview with Sound on Soundin 2011, Cinderella Sound gave musicians the privacy they couldn't find at other studios.
"We're not even in the phone book, you know?" he explained. "So unless you know somebody that knows somebody, you can't even get in here. But Steve Miller did and Ronstadt did and Leo Kottke did and a lot of folks. So we've had the business, despite the fact that you can't even find us, you know? You can't Google us or anything else, therefore there's not a Gray Line bus tour coming through here every day saying 'Is that Johnny Cash in here? I wanna get his autograph.' That drives artists crazy."
"And Steve Miller didn't want anybody in the studio that wasn't hired to play on it, and that's what he got. He wanted to engineer his own vocals? Fine, go ahead. You know? So we try to bend in whatever direction the artist wants and we've had a lot of people in here over the years."

1974 Classic Album Cover of Dolly Parton Reimagined in ‘Icons Only’ Tribute
Megan Moroney is stepping into some big shoes — and big hair — for her latest role. The country music star has turned back time, recreating the iconic look thatDolly Parton had for her Jolene album cover.
The special debut is all part of the Icons Only feature in People Magazine’s 2026 World's Most Beautiful Issue, which dropped on Tuesday, April 21. Adding to the significance, Moroney, 28, is the exact age Parton was when the album came out.

She’s everything,” Moroney, a lifelong fan of Parton, gushed over the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, 80, in a video post shared on Instagram. “She’s always been super confident. She knows exactly who she is. She’s kind and gracious, over the top in some ways, but she really embraces it. So that’s always been inspiring to me.”
“She’s exactly who she is. And, she’s iconic,” the Georgia native continued. “I am feeling like I’m about to pour myself a cup of ambition, that’s for sure.”
The TransformationTo bring the vision to life, Moroney worked with top celebrity hairstylist Jessica Miller, who layered two wigs on her head. Makeup artist Jessica Candage brought out Moroney's features using “neutral, peach tones.”
As for the apparel, Moroney, who is most-nominated at the upcoming ACM Awards, didn’t wear the exact striped jumpsuit with white balloon sleeves that Parton donned for the cover. However, with the help of stylist Lindsey Dupuis Bledsoe and fashion designer Mariana Romanova, she was able to match the look of the original outfit.
“It took about a day and a half,” Dupuis revealed of piecing together the outfit. “We researched because there's not a lot of pictures of Dolly standing in it; she's seated the whole time. But I have [Parton’s] book, Behind the Seams, and it has a full-length picture of her, so that's how we figured out what was happening.”
“I think Dolly has inspired my style because she’s always thought more is more, and I’m right there with you, girl,” Moroney, whose personal style tends to reflect Parton’s, shared.
The AlbumReleased on Feb. 4, 1974, Jolene served as the thirteenth studio album from Parton. The collection included her beloved farewell ballad to Porter Wagoner, “I Will Always Love You,” and the title track, both of which topped the country charts.
“I must have learned the songs in the womb,” Moroney told People of the songs. “I don't remember an age where I learned these songs; I feel like I was born and I knew them. So I blame my mom for playing a lot of Dolly Parton in the car. I grew up in a household where it was like, ‘In this house, we respect Dolly Parton.’”
So what would her reaction be if she met Parton in person today?
Moroney says, “I haven’t met Dolly yet, but I’d probably scream….I just need to meet her. I’d probably hug her, I’d ask her to sing. I’d ask her how she gets so much volume in her hair and makeup tips.”

1971 Classic Named No. 1 Hit Song Became an Anthem of Unconditional Love
Sometimes, the simplest love songs are the ones that last the longest and have the most impact.
When country singer Freddie Hart put out "Easy Loving," it didn't rely on huge gestures or super over-the-top lyrics to make its mark. Instead, the song's gentle message about unconditional love carried it all the way to No. 1. Years later, it still resonates, reminding us that the most meaningful kind of love is often the simplest.
Released in the summer of 1971, "Easy Loving" became Hart's breakthrough song and country music standard. Before the release of the single, the country singer had many minor hits for various labels. His previous song, "California Grapevine," was stuck at No. 68 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart, which caused Capitol Records to drop his contract.
In Atlanta, "Easy Loving" played at a local radio station, then quickly caught on nationwide. A month after its release, the track became a Top 10 country song and was eventually crowned the No. 1 hit in September, staying there for three weeks.
Thanks to its success, it won Hart numerous awards. For instance, he was named the Top Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in 1972, nominated for two Grammy Awards and honored with Song of the Year by the Country Music Association both in 1971 and 1972. Capitol Records immediately re-signed Hart, and he went on to release five more singles that were also No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

Hart was born and raised in Alabama and learned how to play guitar at five years old. After serving in the military, he moved to California to pursue a music career. During the early 1950s, the "My Hang Up is You" singer joined Lefty Frizzell's band for a year before signing with Capitol Records. He recorded a string of singles, but none of them were successful until "Easy Loving" was put out in 1971.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Hart continued to release major songs, hitting a total of 29 studio albums before his death. In the 2000s, Hart made the shift to songwriting, specifically in the gospel genre. He continued writing and recoding into his later years, before passing away due to pneumonia in October 2018. He was 91 years old.
A significant portion of Hart's discography is available on major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music.

1983 No. 1 Hit Dance Track Won an Oscar for 'Best Original Song' 42 Years Ago
Jennifer Beals starred in a 1983 romantic drama dance film that would become a big-screen cult classic. Flashdance was not only a box office success and pop culture craze with a sequencing style that inspired other films, but it also had a hit track that won an Oscar, composed by Giorgio Moroder andIrene Cara.
By the '80s, Moroder was already a household name record producer who was tasked with developing tracks for the film Flashdance. Directed by Adrian Lyne, Beals starred as a passionate young dancer named Alex Owens who works as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night. She dreams of becoming a professional ballerina, and alongside her boyfriend, she strives to prove her worth to an elite dance academy.
Flashdance was without a doubt a box office success, having made $201 million at the box office, compared to its low $7 million budget. The film became iconic thanks to its dance numbers, Beals in the leading role, its iconic scenes of water being poured over Beals during a pivotal scene, and its soundtrack.
Moroder was approached by Flashdance producer Jerry Bruckheimer after having worked together on American Gigolo. He developed a rough demo of ideas and asked drummer Keith Forsey to help develop the track. Forsey would then seek the help of Fame actor and singer Irene Cara, and together they developed the hit track "Flashdance... What a Feeling."

Cara and Forsey watched the final climactic dance scene of the film and soon developed its lyrics. The singer felt the song needed to convey "a metaphor about a dancer, how she's in control of her body when she dances and how she can be in control of her life." Moroder was ultimately on board, with Cara making clear she would be the one to sing the song. "What a Feeling" was the right title for the song, with "Flashdance" being added after its completion at the request of Moroder to get more promotion.
"Flashdance... What a Feeling" was praised by critics as one of the best showcases of Cara's vocal talents. It landed on the Billboard Hot 100 charts at No. 1 and on the Dance Club Songs charts. The track won both an Oscar and a Grammy for Best Original Song in 1984, with Cara earning a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for the single. She was listed as one of the top Best Song performances when she sang the track at the Oscars.
The hit track came with its dark moments, when Cara filed a lawsuit against her record label for unpaid royalties. She had realized she wasn't getting paid despite the song's immense popularity. After many years, Cara was only awarded over a million, but had faced immense career damage as a result.

2019 Hit Film Was Just Ranked the 'Most Perfect Thriller' of the Last 20 Years
Over the last two decades, movie-goers have been treated to a fair share of incredible thrillers. Collider recently shared a list of the top 10 "most perfect thrillers" released after 2006. According to the publication, some of the most nail-biting films since 2006 include 2010's Shutter Island, The Dark Knight from 2008, 2014's Gone Girl, and Parasite from 2019.
2019's Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler as Howard Ratner, took home the list's top spot. Collider noted that the film, directed by brothers Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, is almost unpleasant because of how stressful it is to watch Howard make all the wrong decisions during its 135-minute runtime.
Uncut Gems has a rating of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Adam Sandler Shared How He Joined the Cast of 'Uncut Gems'In a 2019 interview with MTV, alongside Sandler, the Safdie brothers revealed they had approached the actor to star in Uncut Gems in 2012.
"In 2012, we sent the script over to him and then eventually he saw Good Time and immediately reached out to us, which was surreal," said Josh during the interview.
Sandler also said he was interested in playing Howard once he saw the Safdies' films. In addition, Sandler said he and his wife, Jackie Sandler, were immediately blown away when they read the script for Uncut Gems.
"I was like, 'Man, this is just something I have to do.' My wife read it too and she was like, 'My God, these guys are incredible. You've got to be a part of this.' So you know, she helped me get more courage to jump into this character," said the formerSaturday Night Live star.
Sandler clarified that he was not afraid to take on the role of the jeweler. Rather, he wasn't used to starring in films that aren't light-hearted comedies.
"It's not a light, fun comedy that I love doing. My intentions on my movies are to have a good time, make sure everyone's laughing, walking out of the theater happy. When I was doing this movie, I was just having to concentrate on a whole other part of my head," said Sandler during the MTV interview.
