1975 Country Apology Ballad Turned Heartbreak Into a No. 1 Hit

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 6:04am

Sometimes a simple apology can say everything. And in 1975, John Denver proved it with a song that soared to number one.

"I'm Sorry" was a Billboard chart topper for Denver that year. The song, which reflects on growing distance from a partner, is one of his most straightforward and heartbreaking tunes, said to be about his marriage to his first wife, Annie Martell.

The lyrics reflect on the overall sadness of what appears to be the end of a relationship. Denver's melancholy is reflected as he sings (per Genius), "I'm sorry for all the lies I've told you. I'm sorry for the things I didn't say. But more than anything else, I'm sorry for myself. I can't believe you went away."

The song was included in Denver’s ninth studio album, Windsong. His emotional delivery highlighted the singer/songwriter’s gift for turning personal feelings into universal stories.

"I'm Sorry" reached the No. 1 spot in September 1975, marking another major milestone for the musician. It became his second big song of that year, following the June success of "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." Both songs spent nearly five months on the charts and dominated the summer and fall of the mid-'70s.

According to Stereogum, the single was a Double A-side, a record with two songs deemed worthy enough to be two hits, instead of one hit and a lesser B-side. The other track accompanying the "I'm Sorry" single is "Calypso," named for the ship of Denver's friend, Jacques Cousteau.

The song closed out Denver's era as a Billboard chart-topping artist. His first No. 1 was in March 1974 with "Sunshine on My Shoulders," followed by "Annie's Song" that July.

Denver would have three more top 10 hits during his career, including "Take Me Home, Country Roads" in February 1971, "Rocky Mountain High" in March 1973, and "Back Home Again" in November 1974.

John Denver died on October 12, 1997. He was 53.

Panera Launches 2 Drink Categories and a ‘Bold’ New Cookie

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 6:01am

Panera's menu is about to get a whole lot larger.

The popular fast-casual restaurant has been finding new ways to resonate with customers, launching its first-ever value-oriented menu a couple of weeks ago and promoting new ways to "dirty soda" with its Unlimited Sip Club shortly before that. Now, it's looking to tackle another trend: energy drinks.

Two years after pulling its controversial Charged Lemonades from menus, the company is ready to re-enter the game with a new "chef-crafted" energy lineup in "bold, bright" flavors. But that only accounts for half of the additions. The other half, Panera said, will feature a different set of spring-inspired flavors, just without the caffeine.

Panera Debuts New Frescas, Energy Refreshers and Dubai Chocolate-Inspired Cookie

Panera's new Energy Refreshers and caffeine-free Frescas are both infused with real fruit to offer "delicious, crave-worthy flavor in every sip," according to a March 11 press release.

Each new category is debuting with its own set of original flavors. Whether Panera plans to grow the lineup is currently unclear, but if all goes well, we wouldn't be shocked to see the beverages take on seasonal additions or expand with new flavors.

The chain said its non-caffeinated Frescas will debut in two "delightful" and "refreshing" varieties: Cherry Lime and Strawberry Basil Lemonade.

  • Cherry Lime Fresca – A delightful blend of cherry and lime flavors, infused with tart cherries.
  • Strawberry Basil Lemonade Fresca – A refreshing blend of Agave Lemonade and strawberry fruit puree blend, infused with fresh strawberries and basil.

Panera's new Energy Refreshers are also heading to menus in two options: Dragonfruit and Passionfruit. The new items will be packed with tropical fruit flavors and a fraction of the caffeine that its Charged Lemonades once had.

  • Dragonfruit Sunset Energy Refresher – A refreshing, caffeinated blend of pineapple and tropical dragonfruit flavors, infused with dragonfruit pieces.
  • Passionfruit Paradise Energy Refresher – A caffeinated blend of passionfruit, guava and orange flavors, infused with fresh pineapple.

Panera

According to an official description, both the Dragonfruit Sunset and Passionfruit Paradise Energy Refreshers will be available in two sizes and two caffeine levels. The smaller 20 fluid ounce cup contains approximately 28 milligrams of caffeine with ice, while the larger 30 fluid ounce cup with ice has about 42 milligrams of caffeine. Notably, both Energy Refreshers contain about half as much caffeine as most energy drinks and about an eighth of what the large Charged Lemonade used to offer (about 390 milligrams).

"With the launch of our new Frescas and Energy Refreshers, we are redefining the premium beverage experience at Panera," Mark Shambura, chief marketing officer at Panera Bread, shared in a statement on Wednesday. "By combining bold flavors with the high-quality ingredients that our guests know and love, including real fruit, we have created a lineup of drinks that are both invigorating and delicious. I am incredibly excited for our guests to discover their new favorite way to refresh and recharge."

Along with the new drinks, Panera said it will add a new cookie to its bakery—one that's inspired by a growing global trend: Dubai Chocolate.

Launching alongside its specialty beverage lineup is Panera's new Dubai Style Chocolate Pistachio Cookie. The "rich, chocolatey" cookie is filled with a pistachio cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with crunchy pistachio pieces. The company calls it the "perfect sweet treat to end any meal." It also hinted that it plans to refresh its pastries and breads throughout the year.

Panera's new Frescas, Energy Refreshers and Dubai Style Chocolate Pistachio Cookie are expected to be available as early as today at locations nationwide (prices may vary). To celebrate, Panera is offering any new Energy Refresher or Fresca FREE with a Mix & Match order using code SIPMOMENT—but only for one day (Wednesday, March 11).

1. Reba McEntire—Sonic Drive-In @reba

Rex and I had a wonderful Sonic Valentine’s Day Lunch a little northeast of LA. I ventured away from my regular order of a #1 number cheeseburger, no onions, to the newly added Smashburger. While it was great, I’m still partial to Rex’s homemade one! 😉 Rex had the foot-long cheese coney with jalapeños. And of course, we had tots! We finished with an incredible mouth-watering chocolate peanut butter shake. Amazing! Happy Valentine’s Day to each and every one of you! Now go out and have a Sonic Valentine’s Day experience!! It will change your life and make your pocketbook happy!😃 Signed, The Tots @SONIC Drive-In

♬ Love Revival - Reba McEntire

Even though Reba McEntire has a restaurant of her own called Reba's Place in her home state of Oklahoma, the country icon has never hidden her love for Sonic Drive-In. Best known for her infatuation with Sonic's tater tots, Reba has mentioned countless times over the years that she has a soft spot for the popular fast-food drive-in.

In a video interview with TalkShopLive, she even revealed that a Valentine's Day meal with her significant other, Rex Linn, once consisted of Sonic tater tots, something that now seems to have become a yearly tradition.

2. Jack Nicholson—Perreca's Bakery View this post on Instagram

Back in 1987, when Jack Nicholson was filming Ironweed in upstate New York, a local driver introduced the Oscar-winning actor to a charming Schenectady favorite called Perreca's Bakery. Nicholson immediately fell in love with the bakery's rustic Italian bread, so much so that he reportedly had loaves delivered to the film set during production. Decades later, Nicholson is still a devoted fan, regularly having the bread shipped to his home in Los Angeles and even freezing extra loaves so he never runs out.

3. Tom Hanks—El Cholo Spanish Cafe

Located in Santa Monica, El Cholo has long been a Southern California staple, known for its colorful hacienda-style décor and authentic Mexican fare passed down through six generations of family ownership. Photos on the walls of stars like Michael Jackson, Jack Nicholson and Mike Love hint at the many influential celebrities who have passed through its doors over the years.

Still, it's Tom Hanks who seems to hold the restaurant especially close to his heart. In a heartwarming shoutout during his Mythical Kitchen "Last Meal" interview, Hanks was presented with the restaurant's famous Taste of History platter and took a moment to appreciate the effort it took to track it down. He even praised the producers for sourcing the original plate with "Taste of History" printed on it. "This is a holy grail, right here," the Cast Away star says.

4. Paul McCartney—Mildreds View this post on Instagram

A lifelong vegetarian since 1975, Paul McCartney has spent decades promoting plant-based eating and animal welfare. So it's no surprise that Mildreds, one of London's most beloved vegan restaurants, sits high on his list of go-to spots when he's in the city.

First opened in Soho in 1988, Mildreds helped pioneer creative vegetarian cooking long before plant-based dining went mainstream. Today, the restaurant is known for its globally inspired vegan dishes and a loyal following, including McCartney himself, who has been a notable regular for years.

5. Elton John—La Petite Maison View this post on Instagram

Nestled in the heart of Nice, La Petite Maison is a chic French-Mediterranean hotspot celebrated for its vibrant dishes and elegant dining setting. Beloved by celebrities including Sir Elton John, the restaurant combines sophisticated cuisine with a welcoming, lively atmosphere that attracts both high-profile patrons and devoted food lovers alike.

Over the years, it hasn't been uncommon to spot Elton John here or at the London location, enjoying a meal and sometimes being serenaded by live musicians playing his music, adding an extra touch of glamour to an already memorable dining experience.

6. David Bowie—Tea and Sympathy View this post on Instagram

The late, great David Bowie was a regular at Tea and Sympathy, a cozy British café tucked in New York City's West Village. He was even spotted there on his 50th birthday, proving it to be one of his favorite places in the city.

Known for hearty comfort food, traditional afternoon tea and a warm, welcoming vibe, the café has long attracted both locals and celebrities. A few moments from a 1997 visit were captured in portraits by renowned British music photographer Kevin Cummins, giving a rare glimpse of Bowie enjoying one of his favorite NYC haunts.

Led by chef Santiago Lastra, KOL has earned international acclaim for its creative Mexican-inspired cuisine, blending British ingredients with bold flavors, and has retained its Michelin star since 2022.

Cruise's visit was a standout for the team, who shared photos of the Mission: Impossible star and his friends smiling arm in arm with the chef, who called the evening a career highlight. Four months later, Cruise returned to thank Lastra personally, saying KOL had become his favorite restaurant.

8. Madonna—Botegga Caruso View this post on Instagram

The Queen of Pop has a soft spot for the seaside town of Margate in southeast England, calling it her "idea of heaven" on Instagram during a recent visit. While in town supporting her longtime friend Dame Tracey Emin's art residency program, Madonna revealed that one of the local Italian spots she keeps returning to is Bottega Caruso. Locals have noted that she's dined there more than once, enjoying its fresh pasta and traditional dishes inspired by recipes from the owners' village near Naples.

9. Warren Beatty—Crustacean View this post on Instagram

For years, Crustacean in Beverly Hills has been a go-to spot for high-end, made-from-scratch Euro-Asian cuisine, including its famous garlic noodles. Warren Beatty is one of the restaurant's most notable patrons, and even today, stars like Bruno Mars and Steve Harvey continue to make it a go-to LA dining spot.

In 2018, Crustacean underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, further cementing its status as a Beverly Hills staple. And with a long list of celebrity patrons making up a chunk of its regulars, sitting down with the likes of Warren Beatty today isn't totally out of the question.

10. Jane Fonda—Max and Helen's View this post on Instagram

Last December, Jane Fonda shared a memorable dinner at Max and Helen's, a family-run diner in New Jersey owned by Phil Rosenthal. She described being greeted like an old friend as soon as she walked in, setting the tone for a fun, indulgent evening.

As for her meal, Fonda enjoyed what she called "the best French fries I have ever had in my very long life," along with a pastrami sandwich, a famous waffle with maple butter, a hot dog, a tuna melt, a salad, hot chocolate and a tasty chocolate malt. Don't worry—she didn't tackle it all alone; she shared the feast with a friend. Fonda describes the experience as much about the warmth and charm of the diner as it was about the food, and says she's already looking forward to going back.

The rug has a boho-chic aesthetic that feels both artisanal and relaxed, making it an easy way to brighten up a space. Its design features rows of geometric patterns in ivory that look detailed without feeling cluttered. The navy background adds depth while still working as a versatile neutral. It’s available in 10 sizes, including rectangle, runner, and round shapes.

The rug is power-loomed in Turkey from polypropylene, a material known for durability and easy care. Its low 0.14-inch pile height keeps the surface smooth and flat, which works well in high-traffic areas. It performs just as well on a patio as it does inside a living room.

Cleaning is simple, too. You can spot clean the surface using mild detergent when needed. Another bonus is its reversible design — if one side gets heavy use, you can simply flip it over to extend its lifespan.

1969 Hit Just Named John Fogerty’s Best Song of All Time

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 5:29am

John Fogertyis one of the most influential singer-songwriters in American rock music. Best known as the singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty helped define the sound of late-1960s and early-1970s rock with his socially conscious songwriting, gritty voice, and swamp-rock guitar style.

John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival

During his time with Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fogerty wrote and performed many of the band’s biggest hits, helping propel the group to major success between the late 1960s and early 1970s. His songwriting and distinctive sound helped the band stand out during an era dominated by psychedelic rock, creating a style that blended rock, blues, and Southern influences.

The Story Behind "Fortunate Son"

One of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s most famous songs is "Fortunate Son," written by John Fogerty. Released in 1969 on the album Willy and the Poor Boys, "Fortunate Son" appears as the B-side to the single "Down on the Corner." Widely interpreted as a protest song about class inequality during the Vietnam War era, Fogerty wrote the lyrics as a commentary on how young men from working-class families were often drafted into military service while wealthier or politically connected individuals often avoided the draft. "Fortunate Son" has since become one of the most recognized protest songs in rock history.

Now online music news destination AudioPhix is ranking "Fortunate Son" as Fogerty’s best song of all time.

“It is a tidal wave. It is among the greatest rock protest songs ever written. It is both an angry manifesto and an anthemic sing-along. It is that rare piece of art that can be claimed by all sides in an argument – and has been,” AudioPhix editors write explaining the methodology behind ranking the song Fogerty’s best.

Impact and Legacy of "Fortunate Son"

Not only is "Fortunate Son" considered John Fogerty’s best song and one of the definitive rock protest songs of the 1960s, the track has been recorded by some of music’s elite including Bob Seger, U2, Bruce Springsteen, and Dropkick Murphys. Each cover brings its own style to the song, preserving its powerful message and expanding its impact to new audiences.

Decades after its release, "Fortunate Son" still resonates with listeners and remains one of the most iconic protest anthems in rock history.

‘I’m an Endocrinologist—This Popular Smoothie Ingredient Sends Blood Sugar Soaring’

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 5:25am

Smoothies are staples of wellness culture. Recipes for smoothies (especially green ones) are everywhere around New Year's and when warm weather creeps in, key times when people often start focusing more on their health.

But no food gets a complete health halo—especially not one like a smoothie. "It’s important to understand what is going into a particular smoothie [and how it impacts your body]," says Dr. Disha Narang, MD, a board-certified endocrinologist and the director of obesity medicine with Endeavor Health.

Indeed, smoothies can have a ton of ingredients that can stabilize blood sugar or send it soaring. Dr. Narang always advises her patients to know what's what and to become nutrition label-literate. Doing so can help them avoid loading up on foods that raise blood sugar so that they can manage or prevent Type 2 diabetes.

"When there's an increase in blood glucose, the pancreas releases insulin, in an attempt to correct the elevated glucose level," she tells Parade. "This can also result in over-correction—meaning someone’s blood sugar then drops [steeply]."

As a result, Dr. Narang shares that you may experience issues you don't know are happening yet (like inflammation) and ones you notice quickly (you're dragging earlier than usual). Neither was likely your goal when you whipped up a homemade smoothie or ordered one at a local spot. To help you hit your health benchmarks, she share the popular smoothie ingredient that can send blood sugar soaring, and what to order instead.

This Popular Smoothie Ingredient Sends Blood Sugar Soaring, Endocrinologist Warns

Amir Mukhtar/Getty Images

Dr. Narang wishes people would focus more on how fruit in smoothies can raise blood sugar levels in the short- and long-term. "If fruit juice is the base, then that will be a sugar load," she shares.

Yet we often hear that we should eat more fruit. What's the big deal about having fruit in juice form?

"With juice, the fiber from the whole fruit is removed, leaving just the sweeter juice, which will quickly be absorbed by the body and cause a blood sugar spike," Dr. Narang states. "A higher fiber option stabilizes blood sugars. But [the opposite happens] with fruit juice, particularly fruit juice with added sugars."

Indeed, orange juice has less than a gram of fiber per 8-ounce serving. Meanwhile, a whole orange contains about 2 grams of fiber per serving. It doesn't sound like a massive difference, but every gram counts when working toward daily fiber recommendations, which are about 28 grams for women and 38 grams for men. Most people are only getting 16 grams of fiber daily.

Related: ‘I’m an Endocrinologist—This Is the Worst Juice for Blood Sugar Spikes’

Research indicates that fiber helps manage blood sugar, weight and appetite. Without it, your body can't function as it should to keep your blood sugar in check. And that's a problem, especially when you're blending fruit juice with added sugars into your smoothie.

"With an increase in blood glucose, the pancreas releases insulin—the more insulin, the greater the blood sugar—in an attempt to correct the elevated glucose level," Dr. Narang says. "This can also result in over-correction, meaning someone’s blood sugar then drops precipitously."

As a result, Dr. Narang reports that you may feel fatigued, hungry or have sugar cravings. "This is the body’s attempt to stabilize, but what this actually does is send you on a rollercoaster," she adds.

Related: ‘I’m an Endocrinologist, and This Is the Best Morning Drink for Insulin Sensitivity’

Wait—Can I Never, Ever Have Fruit Juice?

Dr. Narang will rarely say, "Never have something."

"Blood sugar control is not about eliminating foods completely, but it is about frequency, quantity and what you pair various foods with," she tells Parade.

In other words, "everything in moderation," including fruit juice. What does moderation mean, though? "Moderation means ‘not excessive,'" Dr. Narang says.

She adds that an occasional half-cup serving of juice can have a place in a balanced diet, especially if you add protein and fiber (like Greek yogurt and fruit) into a smoothie.

"For those with pre-diabetes or diabetes, juice can quickly raise blood sugars due to the lack of fiber. I’d recommend limiting juice as best you can, and eating the whole fruit instead," Dr. Narang says. "Again, whole fruit provides fiber, which stabilizes blood sugars and slows absorption of sugar."

Related: Endocrinologists Say This Is the Most Underrated Food for Blood Sugar After 50

What To Use Instead of Juice in Smoothies

Besides the whole fruit, Dr. Narang says you can use plant-based milk as a liquid base.

If it's fruit juice or bust, you can engage in a little risk reduction when at the grocery store.

"I’d recommend using 100% juice with no added sugars, and keeping moderate portions, such as a quarter of a cup, in a smoothie," she advises. "Look for juices that list only fruit in the ingredient list."

Then, follow the same guidance as above: Add in protein and fiber to slow absorption. "Additionally, without activity or exercise, it will be difficult to burn off glucose stores, which can also lead to further weight gain," Dr. Narang says.

So, consider doing a 10-minute post-smoothie walk to bring blood sugar down.

I Tried 7 Funfetti Cake Mixes—Only One Was Worth Buying

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 5:16am

With its soft and fluffy texture, sweet flavor, and rainbow appearance, funfetti cake is easy to love and even more enjoyable to eat. The boxed mix is the ultimate easy dessert to make for a birthday party and is something that both kids and adults alike will always want a slice of.

To make funfetti (or confetti) cake, all you need to do is add eggs, oil or butter, and a little bit of water to the sprinkle-studded dry cake mix, whisk it all together, and within about 30 minutes, the towering colorful cake of your dreams will ready to be frosted and sliced. Top it off with simple vanilla frosting or an equally colorful funfetti frosting (canned or homemade) for a sweet swirled finish.

Although Pillsbury invented funfetti cake, the concept has been replicated by other food brands and bakers for decades. I wanted to find out which box of confetti cake mix is the best and which ones are worth leaving on the shelf. After all, there are an overwhelming number of options and it can be difficult to discern the good from the inedible (though is there really such a thing as inedible confetti cake? I mean, it is still a confetti cake after all!).

After extensive research, I decided to test as many boxed confetti cake mixes as I could find (seven in total, including two gluten-free options) and started tasting. I mixed and baked each one according to the instructions, then started sampling. In the end, there was one that rose above the rest and is precisely what I think the perfect confetti cake should taste like. Read on for the full ranking of the best confetti cake mixes.

What Is Funfetti Cake?

Funfetti cake—also known as confetti cake—is traditionally a vanilla cake made with white or yellow cake batter and studded with colorful sprinkles. It was first introduced to the market in 1989 by Pillsbury as a white cake mix with rainbow sprinkles. Eventually, other food brands like Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines, and King Arthur followed suit, along with popular bakeries across the world.

Christina Tosi invented the bestselling Birthday Cake at Momofuku Milk Bar in 2008, which featured three tiers of rainbow-flecked vanilla birthday cake, a rich cream cheese frosting, and birthday cake crumbles. In 2014, Food Network chef Molly Yeh shared a recipe for a Sprinkle Cake inspired by the box mix that went viral. Her secret to mimicking the flavor of the iconic boxed mix? Using clear imitation vanilla, not pure vanilla extract—the same trick that Tosi swears by. “That is the flavor that will launch you right back into a babysitters' club slumber party world, complete with scrunchies and friendship bracelets,” Yeh wrote on her blog.

How I Chose These Confetti Cakes

There are a lot of classic and seasonal varieties of confetti cake, so for the sake of this test, I decided not to test Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and spring-themed mixes. I also skipped flavored varieties such as strawberry and instead stuck to traditional yellow (or vanilla) funfetti cake mixes.

I researched which brands make confetti cake mixes and which grocery stores sold them. In the end, the brands that made the cut included 365 by Whole Foods Market, Betty Crocker, Great Value Deluxe Moist Confetti Cake Mix, King Arthur Baking, Pillsbury, and Sur La Table.

During my research process, I learned that Duncan Hines recently discontinued their “Signature Confetti Cake Mix” and that 365 by Whole Foods Market is currently in the process of reformulating their “Celebration Cake Kit.” (Because my local Whole Foods still carried the existing version, I did pick up a box to test). It’s also worth noting that Trader Joe’s used to have their own “Celebration Cake & Baking Mix” but it seems like it disappeared off of shelves in late 2024 or 2025.

I also decided to test two gluten-free versions of confetti cake mix—King Arthur Baking Company’s Gluten Free Confetti Cake Mix and Pillsbury Gluten Free Funfetti Cake Mix with Candy Bits.

How I Tested These Confetti Cakes

Kelly Vaughan

Boxed cake mix has instructions for baking either an 8- or 9-inch round cake or cupcakes; for the sake of testing, I opted to make cupcakes. I prepared each mix according to the package instructions, following visual cues and timing to ensure doneness.

Once the cupcakes were baked and cooled, I randomly assigned a number to each box so that I could taste them blindly. I used my husband, Evan, as a second opinion. We first tasted the cupcakes unadorned, taking note of the flavor (were any cloyingly sweet or, on the flip side, incredibly bland?); texture (were they light and fluffy, dense, or somewhere in between?); moistness; and color (was there an even distribution of sprinkles? how vibrant were the colors?).

We then tried each cupcake with a smear of vanilla frosting and noted how the baked batter tasted frosted. Although funfetti cake is often frosted with a sprinkle- or rainbow chip-studded frosting, I decided to stick to plain vanilla so as to not introduce too many new flavors or textures to the bite). Once I had thorough notes, I assembled my ranking and found a clear winner!

I firmly believe that anyone who has dietary restrictions deserves to be able to enjoy a slice of funfetti cake, especially one that doesn’t compromise on flavor or texture. Unfortunately, Pillsbury’s gluten-free version of their iconic boxed mix just didn’t layer up. During the blind taste test, I noted that this cupcake tasted quite bland and had an extremely dry and crumbly texture. Evan remarked that it tasted “like a bad pancake” and was “chalky.” Although gluten-free baked goods aren’t always going to share the same light and fluffy texture as those made with traditional types of flour, I still wished that this one was sweeter, more vanilla-y, and a whole lot more fun.

It’s worth noting that Whole Foods Market is currently in the process of reformulating their version of the iconic funfetti cake, which is a good thing considering that this was the worst regular boxed mix I tried. Let’s start with the visuals alone—the sprinkles were round and consisted primarily of darker hues, especially blue, which kind of made these cupcakes look more like a science experiment than a dessert for a three (or thirty) year old’s birthday party.

In terms of flavor, I thought that the cupcakes had a distinctive “natural” flavor that some better-for-you desserts have—aka it was sad and void of any and all sweetness. The texture was dense and dry enough that no amount of frosting could have made it better.

5. King Arthur Baking Company Gluten-Free Confetti Cake Mix

Props to King Arthur Baking Company for making a decent confetti cake using gluten-free ingredients. Like Pillsbury, these cupcakes didn’t have the best texture (we both thought that they were oddly spongey and chewy), but they did have a nice flavor that wasn’t too sweet or cloying. The sprinkles were less vibrant and colorful than others, which gave the vibe of a “healthy” confetti cake. Still, it’s a solid option for anyone with dietary restrictions.

What Betty Crocker lacks in texture, she more than made up for in flavor in this confetti-style cake mix. These cupcakes were definitely on the dry and dense side, but they had welcome notes of toasted caramel, vanilla, and butter. Plus, a generous smear of frosting did help to improve the texture. While there are definitely worse boxed confetti cake mixes that you could snag, there are also better.

3: Great Value Deluxe Moist Confetti White Cake Mix

If you love the cloud-like texture and delicate flavor of angel food cake, then this rainbow-studded version is for you. I was pleasantly surprised by Walmart’s answer to the confetti competition. Although it had a mild, slightly bland flavor, both Evan and I loved the light and moist texture and array of brightly colored sprinkles. I wish that it had more pronounced notes of vanilla, but aside from that, this mix baked up into a very good batch of cupcakes.

2: Pillsbury Funfetti Premium Cake & Cupcake Mix

Kelly Vaughan

Pillsbury literally invented funfetti cake mix, so frankly it’s no surprise that they beat most of the competitors in this sprinkled space. Each bite of these cupcakes were soft, sweet, and perfectly golden. Yes, there was a tiny bit of that artificial boxed cake mix flavor, but that’s part of the fun, isn't it? These were also noticeably more flavorful than nearly all of the other cupcakes that we tried, but there was one that ultimately took the cake.

1: Sur La Table Confetti Cake Mix

Kelly Vaughan

View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article

When I blind tasted Sur La Table’s confetti cupcakes, I had a sneaking suspicion that they were from a box that retails for $16.95. And I was sorry to learn that I was right. These cupcakes tasted like homemade confetti cake with natural, deep vanilla notes, a warm buttery flavor, and lots of colorful sprinkles. If you’re really trying to trick someone into thinking you baked from scratch, this box will be your secret weapon. Do I think that a single box of cake mix should cost $16.95? No. And at this price, was this cupcake three to four times better than all the rest that I tried? No. But objectively speaking, it was the very best store-bought confetti cake mix that I tried.

This 1901 Waikiki Oceanfront Resort Turns 125 Today and Is Still Considered One of the Greatest Hotels Ever Made

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 5:10am

Long before the high-rises and neon lights defined the Honolulu skyline, there was only the "First Lady." When the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, officially opened on March 11, 1901, it wasn't just a new hotel—it was the birth of Hawaiian tourism.

Built by wealthy landowner Walter Chamberlain Peacock for a then-staggering $150,000, the grand Victorian structure stood alone on a stretch of coast that was, at the time, mostly duck ponds and taro fields. Designed by architect Oliver G. Traphagen in a stunning Beaux-Arts style, the original four-story wooden building brought a level of "modern" luxury that seemed impossible for the era.

It boasted Waikiki’s first electric-powered elevator, and each of its 75 rooms featured a private telephone and bathroom—innovations that made it the most elaborate hotel in the territory. Today, located at the heart of Kalakaua Avenue, its white Ionic columns and wide, ocean-facing verandas remain the architectural soul of the beach.

“Since 1901, the Moana has welcomed generations of guests and kamaaina to gather beneath the historic banyan tree at the heart of our oceanside courtyard,” said Thomas Foti, Biplex General Manager, Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort and Spa, and Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. “We continue the tradition as we celebrate 125 years of the ‘First Lady of Waikiki,’ in tribute to her remarkable legacy, and in commemoration of the hospitality, traditions and culture that will continue into the future.”

The milestone anniversary also marks the completion of a multimillion-dollar landmark renewal. Every one of the resort’s 791 guest rooms across its three distinct wings—the historic Banyan Wing, the Diamond Wing and the Tower—has been meticulously refreshed.

The renovation honors the hotel’s Victorian roots while bringing in the "quiet luxury" aesthetic that 2026 travelers crave, from the refinished original wood flooring in the lobby to bespoke botanical art that reflects the lush landscape outside.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Oahu this March, the anniversary festivities on the 11th are a deep dive into this history. The day kicks off with a sunrise wellness session and features a performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band, culminating in the release of 125 monarch butterflies in the Banyan Courtyard.

They are even opening a time capsule from 2001, offering a rare peek at what life was like a quarter-century ago at the resort.

Even if you can't make the big day, the entire month of March is dedicated to the legacy. You can book a "125th Anniversary Afternoon Tea" at The Veranda or participate in the "One Year Wave" experience—a wooden postcard you write to your future self that the hotel will mail to you in exactly one year.

For those looking to book a stay, the resort is offering a massive anniversary credit—$600 per stay—for bookings made by March 10 for travel through 2027. Under that iconic, 75-foot-tall banyan tree (planted in 1904!), it’s easy to see why the Moana remains the definitive icon of the islands.

1969 No. 1 Hit Became an ‘Anthem of the Time’ 57 Years Ago

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 5:09am

In the spring of 1969, The 5th Dimension hit it big with the song “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In.”  Originally written by composers Galt MacDermot, James Rado, and Gerome Ragni for the Broadway musical Hair, the song medley hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 12, 1969, and remained there for six weeks. It marked the first No. 1 hit for 5th Dimension bandmates Lamonte McLemore, Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue, Ronald Townson, and Billy Davis.

The lyrics to the song reflected a changing mood of peace and love in the country in the late 1960s amid the astrological belief that the world would soon be entering “the Age of Aquarius.”

In August 1969, The 5th Dimension were not present at Woodstock, which was billed as an “An Aquarian Exposition,”  but their song was. The hit “Aquarius” medley became part of a sing-along by the massive crowd at the three-day music festival held in Bethel, New York, according to Stereogum.

More than 50 years later, LaRue recalled the band’s reaction when they first heard “Aquarius” and “Let the Sunshine In” in the Hair musical.

“Oh, we really liked it!” she told American Songwriter in 2021. “We had no idea it would become an anthem of the time. We had no idea at all how big it would be. We just thought it was a wonderful, uplifting song.”

A lost wallet led The 5th Dimension to their  hit song

"Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine In" was once described by Billboardas an “era -defining blockbuster.” But it almost didn’t happen.

The hit medley of the opening and closing songs from Hair came to be after The 5th Dimension band members were invited to see the show and were impressed by “Aquarius” soloist Ronnie Dyson’s performance.

“One of the gentlemen in the 5th Dimension lost his wallet,” LaRue explained to American Songwriter. “We were in New York City at the Americana Hotel, performing, and another gentleman found his wallet and brought it to the Americana and returned it. So, we invited him to the show, and he invited us to his show. That gentleman was the producer of [the musical] Hair! So, when we went to see Hair and we heard the song, we said, 'Wow, we’ve got to do that!'”

“We thought we could make it a hit,” McCoo told Billboard. “We called Bones [Howe, their producer]. We said, 'We’ve got to record this song.' He said, ‘I don’t know. It’s been done a couple of times and nobody’s had a hit.'"

Howe had the idea to marry the song with the show’s finisher, “(The Flesh Failures) Let the Sun Shine In,” and the rest is history.

The 5th Dimension’s medley went on to win the Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a  Group and Record of the Year at the 12th Annual Grammy Awards in March 1970.

An enduring message

During a 2025 appearance on Professor of Rock, Davis noted that the song’s message still resonates decades later. “Even today, when we do 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,' people are up,” he shared. "And they are clapping and they, you think, 'They still doing this on this song?' This song is magic.”

Fellow band member LaRue also never grew tired of The 5th Dimension’s career-defining hit—or its message.

You know, I’ve been singing that song for 50 years, and I never tire of it because what I like about it is that it’s about harmony and understanding,” she told American Songwriter. “Peace. I think of peace in the world among the races, among the nationalities. It just makes me feel good that there’s hope. There is hope.”

Plus-Size Traveler Takes On One of Malaysia's Steepest Pilgrimages to Prove Travel is for Every Body

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 5:03am

As a plus-size woman, traveling can be a bit harrowing. From stressing about taking up "too much" space on a flight to wondering if certain activities will be off limits, it can be pretty defeating. But the truth is a good 98 percent of these experiences are possible for every body. You just have to know how to make it work for you.

Don't believe me? Perhaps you'll believe Beck Delude, a plus-size travel influencer who runs Manfattan, a street-style social media sensation that began as The Manfattan Project. After taking it over, Beck transformed it into a travel account where she embarks on worldly adventures as a 6'3", plus-size traveler.

"The biggest myth is that you have to be a certain size, level of fitness, or comfort threshold to travel meaningfully," Beck recently toldPMM Today. "There is this idea that if travel is not effortless, then it is not meant for you. My counter-advice is simple: discomfort does not mean you do not belong. It usually means you need different information, preparation, or pacing."

That isn't to say that she believes plus-size travel challenges don't exist—it's more that being conscious of them can set you free.

"It is about meeting them with self-compassion and planning instead of shame," she says. "You are not doing travel wrong because you need rest days, accommodations, or alternatives. You are doing it in a way that honors your body."

And you know what? She can prove it.

Climbing the Batu Caves as a Plus-Size Person

The Batu Caves are a famous Hindu sanctuary located in the heart of Malaysia. The limestone caverns were transformed into a shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war and victory, by Indian merchant K. Thamboosamy Pillai. Today it stands as a 272-step pilgrimage that many find to be a deeply spiritual experience.

@manfattan

This video went crazy on the other app… uploading here to see if I should return to TT! Before this, I looked online for videos of plus size people climbing the stairs to Batu Caves in Malaysia. I know they must exist, I just didn’t see any. So I’m sharing this to make sure we’re visible out here, living our lives in the world. If you’ve got knees that can take stairs, this experience is for you, no matter your size. Go slow. Take breaks. You belong here.

♬ Hindu Pop - Marchese

Beck climbed every single step of those colorful stairs just to prove someone with her body type can actually do it.

"I’m sharing this to make sure we’re visible out here, living our lives in the world," she wrote in her caption. "If you’ve got knees that can take stairs, this experience is for you, no matter your size. Go slow. Take breaks. You belong here."

People were utterly enamored with her journey and praised her for the inclusive, positive representation.

"Thank you for doing this so respectfully. I’m Hindu and seeing this temple for the first time through your eyes," wrote one commenter.

"I like how you showed that the breaks were taken and that it was an enjoyable experience even while the breaks were needed. It’s something that needs to be seen. We don’t have to run ourselves into the ground to enjoy our lives," wrote another.

No matter what policies are in place by airlines or what negative commenters may say when they see a plus-size person out in the wild, if you consider yourself one of them, you have every right to experience the world just as much as a thin person does. And you can do anything you set your mind to.

4 Core Traits of People Born on the 18th, Per Numerology

Wed, 03/11/2026 - 4:28am

What does it mean if you’re born on the 18th? Your birth date is significant, because it represents your strengths, personality attributes, and so much more. The meaning behind each birth date is unique thanks to numerology, which is the divine study and interpretation of numbers. The numerological significance of birth dates can correspond with one to three numbers, so 18 relates to 1, 8, and 9. Having your birthday fall on the 18th means you’re a self-made, independent individual who works tirelessly to create an abundant life. Read on to discover the numerological significance of being born on the 18th of any month, challenges to watch for, and four core personality traits that define you.

The Numerological Significance of Number 18

Like other double-digit numbers, the numerological significance of 18 comes from three distinct single-digit numbers. 18 can be reduced to 1 and 8, and these two numbers can be added together to get 9. So, the energy of 18 is the combined energies and characteristics of 1, 8, and 9.

1 evokes a strong, independent spirit who’s always down for a new adventure, even if it means going alone. 8 has this infinite potential to do and create anything, as long as there’s drive, ambition, and determination. 9 is considered a powerful number, thanks to its altruistic attitude and growth-oriented mindset. Altogether, the energies of these numbers make up 18 and guide those who align with 18. These individuals have a powerful presence. They’re courageous and brave, so they achieve great levels of success thanks to their willpower. However, they’re also kind and considerate toward others.

People who embrace 18 also embrace 18’s planetary ruler, Mars, the astrological planet of ambition, aggression, and passion. Mars will instill boldness, tenacity, and strength. Those who align with Mars are fiercely ambitious individuals who aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in. They may feel called to work with a grounding yet energizing crystal like Red Jasper.

Challenges to Watch For

An abundant, fulfilling life awaits those who are born on the 18th, but they have to work for it, and they may have to accomplish this alone. Unlike other relationship-oriented birth dates, those born on the 18th may find more success alone. However, coming to this realization may be a challenge. There could be a strong desire to bring people along for the journey, or to help others accomplish their goals. Although admirable, they’re more successful when they focus on their aspirations and ambitions instead of everyone else's dreams.

Once they achieve self-focus, these individuals will have ample time, energy, and resources to dedicate to their journey. Being successful is part of their spiritual journey, but this doesn’t mean success will come easily or quickly. They must be prepared to be consistent and dedicated in their pursuits. If not, they may stall their own success and abundance. Luckily, they will eventually find their stride after trial and error.

Core Personality Traits of Those Born on the 18th1. Financially Savvy

Money talks to people born on the 18th. The numerological energy of 8 instills an intuitive financial literacy. Yes, they may have learned hard lessons regarding reciprocity, generosity, and financial boundaries. But they have also learned their value and how to champion for what they deserve. These people have a good eye for investments, projects, and ambitions. They know what’s worthwhile and what isn’t, which gives them spiritually guided financial savviness. Consult someone born on the 18th when you have a financial decision, opportunity, or negotiation—they’ll know what to do.

    2. Generous & Compassionate

Is there anyone more generous than someone born on the 18th? The unique energies of 8 and 9 drive these individuals to be overly benevolent. They feel a deep sense of obligation and responsibility to take care of others thanks to their altruistic spirit. Responsibilities aside, they enjoy giving back to their loved ones and communities. Being charitable brings a deep sense of fulfillment to these individuals. Knowing that they have the ability to make a direct positive impact fuels their philanthropic and humanitarian efforts.

      3. Aligned with Spirit

An unmistakable intuition guides those born on the 18th. Most wouldn’t consider this birth date to carry a mystical energy, but it does. People with this birth date feel a deep connection to others, their world, and spirit. Since they’re highly attuned, they have a keen perception of how to serve the greater community. They know what actions to take and efforts to support. Aside from being magnanimous, their intuition also provides the self-assurance needed to follow their dreams and conquer their goals.

        4. Ambitious & Self-Sufficient

Nobody can do what someone born on the 18th does, and they have Mars to thank for that. Mars is a cosmic force to reckon with, so this fiery planet bestows confidence, motivation, and enthusiasm to everyone it rules. People who are born on the 18th are often commended for their “can’t stop, won’t stop” attitude. Nothing is impossible for these people. They’ll likely do their best work flying solo. Being independent will make leaps and bounds in their success. Plus, they can always give back once they’ve accomplished their goals.

Carnival Just Solved the Biggest ‘Time Tax’ of Your Cruise Vacation

          Wed, 03/11/2026 - 4:10am

If you’ve ever sat in a cruise ship’s Main Dining Room midway through your second course, checking your watch and realizing you’re going to have to sprint—or skip dessert—to make the 8:00 PM comedy show, you aren’t alone. In an era where cruise ships are packed with record-breaking thrills and wall-to-wall entertainment, the traditional two-hour dinner has become a bottleneck for many families.

Starting today, Carnival Cruise Line is officially tackling this "time tax" with the rollout of Express Dining. Now available on 15 ships—including the Mardi Gras, Celebrity, and Jubilee—the program promises a full, multi-course sit-down experience in under an hour. It’s a move that signals a major shift in how the industry views the "Main Dining Room" experience: no longer a mandatory slow-down, but a flexible pit stop.

Related: Carnival Brings Back Fan-Favorite Cruise Bundles—For a Limited Time

          The "Freestyle" Shift

For years, Norwegian Cruise Line used "Freestyle Cruising" as its primary differentiator, pushing the idea that you should eat whenever and however you want. Now, Carnival is moving aggressively into that lane. By integrating Express Dining directly into the Carnival HUB App, guests under "Your Time Dining" can opt-in for a streamlined service that mirrors the high-quality menu of the main room but with a slightly abbreviated selection designed for speed.

“Our guests continue to tell us they value greater flexibility in how they spend their time on board,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. The goal is simple: give guests the attentive service they expect from a dining room, but get them back to the "onboard fun" in record time.

Related: This Sneaky Hack Will Save You Hundreds on Your Next NCL Cruise

Why Families Are Trading Table Time for Thrills

This change reflects a broader reality of modern cruising. When you’re on a ship like the Carnival Celebration, your evening might include a ride on the BOLT roller coaster, a high-production stage show, and a trip to a themed bar—all before 10:00 PM. A two-hour dinner doesn't just eat into your night; it eats your night.

Carnival’s move follows the success of their Family Express service on the Lido Deck, which was designed to get parents and kids fed and moving. By bringing that same philosophy to the Main Dining Room, Carnival is acknowledging that for many 2026 travelers, the "luxury" isn't the length of the meal—it’s the ability to fit everything in.

Related: Cruise Fans Have Chosen the Best Ship Thrill Ride of 2025

          Is the Traditional Dinner Dead?

Not quite. Express Dining is an option, not a requirement. For those who still view the three-course, slow-paced dinner as the highlight of their day, the traditional service remains. But for the family of six (the maximum group size for Express) who wants to hit the water slides or the casino, the "Express" lane is a game-changer.

Expect to see this across the entire Carnival fleet by the end of May. It’s a clear sign that in the battle for the best cruise vacation, the line that gives you back your time is the one that wins.

1974 No 1. Hit Ranked a Greatest ‘Love Song of All Time’ Turns 52 Years Old Today

          Wed, 03/11/2026 - 1:59am

52 years ago today, on March 11, 1974, Dolly Parton debuted her tender-hearted, country classic-turned-pop ballad, “I Will Always Love You." The timeless song, which appears on the 1974 Jolene album, hit No. 1 on Billboard’s US Hot Country Songs chart during that summer, but it wouldn’t be the last time the tune made its way to that position.

Parton later recorded “I Will Always Love You” a second time as part of the soundtrack for the 1982 musical comedy film, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. She also starred in the movie as Miss Mona opposite Burt Reynolds, whose character was Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd. It was that year that “I Will Always Love You” topped the Billboard’s US Hot Country Songs again, giving the Queen of Country a reason to celebrate multiple wins.

          Dolly Parton Self-Penned the Hit

Written solely by Parton, “I Will Always Love You” served as a farewell letter to fellow country music singer and television host of The Porter Wagoner Show, Porter Wagoner, her longtime musical partner and mentor. At the time, Parton wanted to pursue a solo career after completing a loyal seven-year stint on the program as a regular performer.

Reflecting on the day she wrote the song, Parton shared that she made a deal with Wagoner after singing the song to him ahead of her show exit.

“I was trying to get out, go out on my own, and it was taking a big hunk out of his show, and the fact that we had one of those love-hate relationships, it was just hard to move on,” she told Bobby Bones on The Bobby Bones Showduring an interview, per Country Now. “He wasn’t listening to anything I had to say. So I went home and wrote that song, took it back the next morning and said, ‘Sit down. I need you to hear something.’ I sang it, and he was crying, so he said, ‘Okay, you can go, provided I can produce that record. So he did.”

Lyrically, “I Will Always Love You” delivers a heartbreaking narrative about letting go of someone, knowing that it’s time to part ways, but still holding onto the memories that will last forever.

Since its release, “I Will Always Love You” has gone on to break even more records. The song was instantaneously made famous by late music icon Whitney Houston, who recorded her version for the 1992 film, The Bodyguard. Houston’s version of the track took the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100, where it stayed for 14 weeks.

The track earned Parton international crossover success, and even gave Houston two Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in 1994. Houston’s rendition also belongs on Billboard’s 2026 listing of greatest ‘love songs of all time.

Legendary '90s Rocker, With 5 No. 1 Hits, Turns 63

          Wed, 03/11/2026 - 1:13am

Rock history in the 1990s wouldn’t look the same without Jeff Ament.

The influential bassist and songwriter, best known as a founding member of Pearl Jam, is celebrating his 63rd birthday Tuesday.

Ament was born on March 10, 1963, in Havre, Montana, and eventually moved to Seattle, where he found his way into the roaring alternative rock scene of the late 1980s. He began his career playing in the band Green River and later in Mother Love Bone, two groups that helped lay the foundation for his renowned talents and the era's revolutionary grunge movement.

Ament's biggest breakthrough came when he co-founded Pearl Jam alongside guitarist Stone Gossard. The band quickly became one of the defining acts of the decade, helping bring the Seattle sound to audiences around the world. Their debut album, Ten, turned the group into international stars and set the stage for a run of hugely successful releases.

Throughout the 1990s, Pearl Jam dominated the charts, with albums Vs., No Code, and Vitalogy all reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Later albums Lightning Bolt and Backspacer also topped the chart. Over the years, the band built a reputation for powerful live performances and a fiercely loyal fan base.

That momentum has carried on far beyond their initial breakthrough. More than three decades later, Pearl Jam continues to tour and release new music, including their 2024 album Dark Matter. Jeff Ament remains an integral part of the group, playing bass and helping maintain the band's magnetic energy.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jeff Ament reflected on his time with the group. "Being here with the band, who have become some of my best friends in the process, making music and art, traveling the world, supporting causes and programs together, making small differences, meeting great artists and creative minds all over the world," he said. "That's a pretty great life."

Beyond his work with the band, Ament has also pursued several other interests. Over the years, he has worked on side projects, such as the group Tres Mts., and released solo music of his own. He is also known for his passion for visual art and skateboarding, using his platform to help fund and design public skateparks throughout his home state of Montana.

As he turns 63, Jeff Ament remains one of the most respected figures to emerge from the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s. From helping shape one of the era's most influential bands to giving back through his work today, his legacy continues to resonate with fans around the world.
