It’s no shock that Pink Floyd is one of the best-selling bands of all time, but it might surprise some people to learn that the pioneering group is still on the charts today, nearly 60 years since the release of their debut record.

As Forbes reported, Pink Floyd’s beloved 1975 album Wish You Were Here, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, regained bestseller status in the U.K. on a number of tallies this week.

After an admittedly brief absence, Wish You Were Here returned to the Official Albums Sales, Official Physical Albums and Official Album Downloads charts (at #89, #90 and #99, respectively). And in just one more week, the album will hit a major milestone: Three full years, or 155 weeks, on the Official Physical Albums chart in total.

Wish You Were Here is also shooting up the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, going from #18 to #10 after spending over 600 weeks on the roster. 

Curiously enough, at the same time, another classic Pink Floyd album is slipping down the same three tallies. 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon dropped to #66, #69 and #70 on the Official Albums Sales, Official Physical Albums and Official Album Downloads charts, respectively.

According to Forbes, it’s not clear why either album is going up or down, but it’s worth noting that Wish You Were Here never leaves the charts for very long…which makes sense considering the fact that appreciation for the record has only grown in the decades since it came out.

Rolling Stone, for example, ranked Wish You Were Here at #264 on a list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” while Ultimate Classic Rock deemed it the second-best Pink Floyd album (after Dark Side of the Moon).

Even the members of Pink Floyd hold Wish You Were Here in high regard; as a video shared by Pink Floyd’s official TIkTok account revealed, Richard Wright and David Gilmour “called it their favorite Floyd record, a quiet masterpiece born from exhaustion, sadness, and love.”

On Spotify, Wish You Were Here‘s title track is Pink Floyd’s most played song, with over one billion streams. (Other streaming hits from the album include “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” with 310,932,264 streams and “Have a Cigar” with 263,573,883.)

Jennifer Aniston sat beside boyfriend Jim Curtis on Wednesday night as he opened up about the health crisis that reshaped his life in his 20s, a deeply personal moment shared in front of an audience.

The couple made a rare public appearance together Wednesday, September 2, at the 92nd Street Y in New York City to celebrate the release of Jim’s new book, The Book of Possibility. 

The Friends star interviewed Jim onstage as he discussed the experiences that eventually shaped his work as a hypnotherapist and transformational coach. Jim, 50, recalled doctors discovering lesions on his spinal cord after he began struggling with his mobility.

The condition caused partial paralysis and chronic nerve damage. “I’m not saying here that if the doctor tells you to do something, you should get up and leave,” Jim told Jennifer and the audience, as reported by US Weekly. 

“What I’m saying is you don’t have to live as the victim. You don’t have to live in your suffering. It can become your power.”

The author admitted that accepting his changing body took years. Jim said he once gave people a different explanation when they asked why he walked with a limp.

“I would say I got into a motorcycle accident,” he said. “I was so shameful that I had a medical condition. [I thought] I was broken in some way. I thought the motorcycle accident was at least a little macho.”

He eventually worked through those feelings with what he described as “self-acceptance and self-love.”

Jennifer, 57, turned the discussion toward people who may feel “stuck” in the “rat race of life,” asking Jim what advice he would offer them. “I’m not a proponent for ‘drop everything and leave,’” Jim said. “That [acceptance] was 25 years in the making for me.”

He acknowledged the practical pressures people face, from paying rent and medical bills to caring for their families, while encouraging the audience not to let fear dictate their choices.

The appearance comes as Jim has been sharing more about his relationship with the Morning Show star.

During the Monday, August 31, episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Show, he said their romance is “going really well.”

“My experience of her is so grounded and so open and caring and kind and loving,” Jim said. “I feel blessed to be in a relationship with someone that is so open-hearted and kind and loving.”

Jennifer and Jim were first publicly linked in July 2025 after they were spotted vacationing together in Mallorca, Spain, but their relationship began months earlier.

“We were just introduced by friends. That’s it,” Jim said during a January 2026 appearance on Today. “We found out that we had mutual friends and we started to just chat. And it took a long time. We chatted for a long time and we became close.”

The third night of Live Shows for America’s Got Talent featured performances from the 11 artists hoping to be voted through by America to make the semifinals: Acro Canine Crew, Daniel Alvarez, Elsie, Isaac Atkins, Guy Kelton Jones I, Herwan Legaillard, Holland & Sienna, Lia Noelle, Kameron Marshall, Maria and Pynk Beard.

Three of them will make it through on America’s vote; seven of them will come to the end of their AGT journey as this season, and one lucky artist – Lia Noelle — last night received the judge’s Golden Buzzer from guest judge Kenan Thompson that put her directly into the finale.

The show opened with a recap of Tuesday night’s performances hosted by by former contestant Sofie Dossi and YouTuber Sam Golbach.

“I was stunned,” Lia Noelle told host Terry Crews of her Golden Buzzer win last night. “I didn’t have words.”

Terry shared the news that in Simon Cowell’s absence next week while he is still recovering from his back surgery, AGT fan favorite Heidi Klum will return as a guest judge.

Then British musicians Absolutely and Amma, singer-songwriter sisters of British superstar Raye, performed a mash up of their individual songs with series alums Detroit Youth Choir.

As usual, Terry did a countdown to the Top 5. First up it was Acro Canine Crew vs. contortionist Maria. The way America loves dogs, it was no surprise that the Acro Canine Crew got the spot.

Second, the pairing was comedian Daniel Alvarez vs. aerial and acrobatic duo Holland & Sienna. The act going through was Daniel even though he was funnier in his audition than Tuesday night.

The third matchup for a place in the Top 5 was Pynk Beard vs. Kameron Marshall. As popular as Pynk Beard was following his audition performance, it was the Canadian magician who prevailed.

Next, it was a face off between Guy Kelton Jones I and Herwan Legaillard. But it was Guy’s mix of spoken word poetry and singing that won over the judges last night and it turns out America as well.

The final pairing for the Top 5 was between singers Elsie and Sergeant Isaac Atkins. Neither picked the right song for their Tuesday night performance, but it was the sergeant from Maine that slid into the Top 5.

Then it was time for whittle down the competition even more from Top 5 to Top 3.

Terry announced that the first act going through was Kameron Marshall, proving that America loves magic.

The second act going through by America’s vote was Acro Canine Crew, which put a smile on Terry’s face as they were his Golden Buzzer act.

The final spot in the Top 3 and making it to the semifinals was Daniel Alvarez.

America’s Got Talent airs performances on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC with results on Wednesday night at 8. Streams next day on Peacock.

When Neil Diamond released “Red Red Wine” in 1967, the folk ballad was hardly a chart sensation. More than 20 years later, UB40’s version became a No. 1 hit and introduced the song to a whole new audience.

At the time, Diamond was still establishing himself as a solo artist. He had already found success as a songwriter, including writing “I’m a Believer” for the Monkees, and he was eager to show audiences what he could do with his own music. “Red Red Wine” was one of the songs he hoped would help make that happen. 

Diamond came up with “Red Red Wine” while working part-time in a store. He imagined it as a slower track about trying to escape heartbreak with a glass of wine. The song first appeared on his 1967 album Just for You before becoming a single the following year. It failed to make much of an impression, reaching only No. 62 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Diamond went on to score bigger hits with songs like “Sweet Caroline” in 1969 and “Cracklin’ Rosie” in 1970. For a while, “Red Red Wine” looked like it would be remembered as one of Diamond’s lesser-known records.

Then, years later, another band would give the song a completely different sound. British reggae group UB40 recorded “Red Red Wine” for its 1983 album Labour of Love, which featured covers of songs the band enjoyed. The choice was a surprising one since Diamond’s original was a folk ballad, not a reggae song.

The track ended up on UB40’s album because the band was familiar with Tony Tribe‘s 1969 reggae recording. They believed Tribe’s version was the original and didn’t realize Diamond had written the song until later.

UB40 released its version in 1983, and it quickly became a hit in the U.K. and other countries, though in the U.S. the song was still waiting for its big break.

That changed in 1988 after UB40 performed “Red Red Wine” at a tribute concert for Nelson Mandela‘s birthday at Wembley Stadium in London. Because the concert aired around the world, “Red Red Wine” reached a much wider audience and started picking up more radio play in the United States.

Five years after UB40 first released its version, “Red Red Wine” finally became the hit Diamond had once hoped it would be. In 1988, UB40’s reggae-infused rendition climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, turning Diamond’s modest 1960s charting song into an international smash. 

For many listeners, UB40’s reggae version became the better-known rendition of “Red Red Wine.” Its easygoing reggae rhythm transformed the feel of Diamond’s slower original.

Diamond, however, was more than happy to see the song find a new audience. He has praised UB40’s interpretation and has even played the reggae version at his own concerts. 

In an interview, Diamond said he never would have guessed the song would eventually become a reggae hit. “I never in my life would have imagined it this way,” he admitted. “If you would have told me that 20 or 25 years later it would have been a huge reggae hit, you know, it’s totally different.”

One of Johnny Cash‘s most beloved hits was once reimagined by fellow music mega-star Bob Dylan.

In the late ’60s, Dylan put his own spin on Cash’s country classic “Folsom Prison Blues,” somehow making the song even more iconic than it already was.

Cash first released the song as a single in 1955, and later included it on his debut album, Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar!, which dropped in 1957.

About a decade later, Dylan recorded the song with The Band during the legendary 1967 basement sessions, and their rendition was later featured on The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete, which released in 2014. Dylan had also performed “Folsom Prison Blues” live on multiple occasions, playing the famous Cash song at 19 different concerts between 1991 and 2005.

But Dylan isn’t the only notable music superstar to cover “Folsom Prison Blues,” which has also been reimagined by a number of other artists, from Hank Williams Jr. to Jerry Lee Lewis, and even Joaquin Phoenix for the 2005 biological film Walk the Line.

Though it was first released in the mid-’50s, “Folsom Prison Blues” didn’t reach its peak success until the following decade, after Cash performed the track at the actual Folsom State Prison in California in 1968. He played two separate live shows inside the maximum-security facility’s cafeteria, performing in front of an audience of roughly 2,000 inmates and guards.

As a result, “Folsom Prison Blues” skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard country charts, spending four weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart starting in June 1968. The song also rose to No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

“Folsom Prison Blues” has gone down in history as not only one of Cash’s most enduring tracks, but also as a fan-favorite song throughout the entire country genre.

SiriusXM ranked “Folsom Prison Blues” as the No. 3 Top Country Song of All Time, behind only Patsy Cline‘s “Crazy” at No. 2 and Garth Brooks‘ “Friends in Low Places” at No. 1. Rolling Stone also included the Cash classic on a 2024 ranking of the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, placing it at No. 54 on that list.

The Doors are back open for business. The rock legends behind some of the era’s defining hits like “Light My Fire” and “Hello, I Love You” have announced that a new double live album is on the way. Unbound and Dangerous is set to be released Oct. 23 via Rhino Records.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the album will include concert performances from the legendary Los Angeles band’s 1970 Roadhouse Blues Tour, which followed the release of Morrison Hotel, including recordings from New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Hollywood. The tour featured vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore.

“I knew Jim was ‘dangerous’ from the beginning,” Densmore said in a press release, per the outlet. “Talented and dangerous. He seemed to want to challenge everything. Then there were his words. That’s what seduced me… those words were about freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom to be free. He wanted to free us all. What a gift. This live album captures that wild spirit.”

The outlet also noted that the record will be available in multiple formats: CD and 2-LP set on translucent red vinyl, digitally from all DSPs, and as a Blu-ray with Botnick’s new Dolby Atmos and high-resolution stereo (192/24) mixes. And that it was compiled and sequenced by surviving members Densmore and Krieger, with longtime engineer Bruce Botnick.

In 1970, Morrison Hotel became The Doors’ fifth consecutive Top 10 album, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Absolutely Live, the group’s first-ever live album, followed in July and became another Top 10 hit. Unbound and Dangerous was made from those recordings, with “Soul Kitchen” the lone exception, coming from the band’s July 21, 1969, performance at Hollywood’s Aquarius Theatre.

“Dangerous equates to excitement,” Botnick said about the album. “The fans came in the thousands to Doors concerts looking for danger and excitement.” Seems as though there’s plenty of it on the new double set.

Bob Dylan’s 1970 song “If Not For You” has remained a beloved classic for more than five decades, but its legacy grew even further when George Harrison covered the track for his album All Things Must Pass.

Fifty-six years after its release, the song was not only recognized as one of the American singer-songwriter’s standout tracks, with The Guardian ranking it at No. 37 on Dylan’s 50 greatest songs and No. 55 on Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest Bob Dylan hits of all time, but it also attracted famous artists like the former Beatles member who gave the song a new life.

The “Blowin’ in the Wind” hitmaker wrote “If Not For You” as a love song for his first wife, Sara Dylan, serving as a straightforward and heartfelt expression of his romance, devotion and gratitude toward her.

Featured as the opening track on his eleventh studio album New Morning, the 1970 track had a moderate response from the public and failed to enter the Billboard chart.

However, while Dylan’s song was initially an underrated classic, Harrison, with the musician’s blessing, helped elevate its legacy with his rendition as part of his 1970 triple album.

The duo presented an entirely different take; the original has breezy, up-tempo instrumentation and Dylan’s raw vocals, while Harrison made it a slower, more ballad-like interpretation.

He also put his signature stamp on the track with prominent slide guitar, giving his own take a distinctly rootsy and expressive sound.

The newer version of “If Not For You” was a huge hit that people mistook for an original Harrison song, as mentioned by Collider.

In 1971, Harrison wanted the song to be performed by him and Dylan at one of his humanitarian shows that took place at Madison Square Garden.

Dubbed the Concert for Bangladesh, Harrison chose “If Not for You” as one of his songs for the guest segment with Dylan.

Although Dylan was reluctant to share the stage with his friend, they ended up rehearsing the song during soundcheck.

Unfortunately, they eventually dropped it from the official concert setlist, although footage from the duo’s rehearsal was later released.

For many years, Dylan didn’t perform the song until 1992, when he performed it during his Never Ending Tour stop in Sydney, Australia, making this his first known public performance of “If Not for You.”

As for Harrison, he performed it at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration, marking his first performance of it since the 1971 rehearsal.

The NFL has announced a new Jonas Brothers appearance ahead of their highly anticipated halftime performance at the league’s first-ever regular-season game in Australia.

Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas will take part in an exclusive live audience interview at the NFL Kickoff Festival in Melbourne on Sept. 10, one day before they headline the halftime show at the NFL Melbourne Game.

The NFL shared the update on Instagram, writing, “Burnin’ up to see the Jonas Brothers in Melbourne, Australia! 🔥” 

The post also confirmed that the brothers will meet with a live audience at the kickoff festival before taking the stage at the historic football game.

The NFL’s Instagram announcement quickly drew excited reactions from fans looking forward to seeing the Jonas Brothers in Melbourne.

“The Jonas Brothers at NFL kickoff? Melbourne is in for a show! 🔥” one commenter wrote.

Another fan joked, “Finally, a kickoff my wife will willingly arrive early for 😂”

The excitement continued with another comment saying, “Jonas Brothers I am so pumped for this.” 

One fan even made a request for the group to return in future years, writing, “Petition to bring them back every year pls.”

Another supporter shared, “I Can’t Wait to see the Jonas Brothers My Favorite Band at Melbourne,” while another summed up the expected atmosphere with, “Crowd gonna be insane 🔥”

The NFL Melbourne Game will take place on Sept. 11, at Melbourne Cricket Ground, where the Los Angeles Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers. The game will be the first regular-season NFL game ever played in Australia.

The Jonas Brothers will perform during halftime, adding a major pop music event to an already historic NFL matchup. The game will stream live on Netflix in the United States, while the full halftime performance will also air live in Australia on the Seven Network.

The Jonas Brothers previously shared their excitement about performing at the event.

“We couldn’t be more excited to perform at halftime during the NFL’s first-ever regular season game in Australia,” the brothers said in a statement, according to Billboard. “Playing at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of such passionate Australian fans is an incredible honor. We can’t wait to be part of this historic moment and celebrate with everyone in the stadium and watching around the world.”

The brothers already have a history of performing at NFL events in the United States. They appeared during the NFL Thanksgiving game in Dallas in 2022 and later performed during the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City.

Their upcoming Melbourne appearance will mark another NFL performance, this time as part of the league’s international schedule.

Australian performers Peking Duk, Kita Alexander, Grinspoon, Hot Dub Time Machine, Public Figures, and Sneaky Sound System are also included in the festival’s music lineup. 

The Melbourne performance comes during a busy period for the Jonas Brothers.

The group recently released its new single “Listen When Sad,” which they first performed live during one of their three sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden.

The song reunites the brothers with John Fields, the original producer of “Burnin’ Up,” for the first time since 2009.

The release follows the group’s 20th-anniversary celebrations and their current The Burning Up Tour All Over Again. The 45-city North American tour begins Sept. 25 at TD Garden in Boston and includes stops in Toronto, Washington, D.C., Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver and other cities before its scheduled conclusion in Newark in December.

The brothers also recently returned as Shane, Nate, and Jason in “Camp Rock 3.” In August, Nick, Joe and Kevin were inducted as Disney Legends, one of The Walt Disney Company’s highest honors.

Harry Shum Jr. is addressing misconceptions about his prior dance experience as he gears up to compete on season 35 of Dancing With The Stars.

On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the Grey’s Anatomy actor was revealed as one of the show’s celebrity contestants. He will be paired with pro dancer Jenna Johnson.

In an interview with People published on Wednesday, Shum Jr. pushed back on the idea that his dance training—showcased in past projects like Glee and Step Up—would give him an advantage in the competition.

“I think everyone’s idea is like, ‘Oh, you dance, so you should be able to dance anything.’ And I mean, that’s just not true,” Shum Jr. said. “There are hundreds of styles, not dozens, hundreds all over the world.”

The actor also noted that Johnson has “a better understanding” of the craft than he does, and being on DWTS will push him toward performing in the “same field” as her.

“It’s just a whole new vocabulary,” Shum Jr. added in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I’m excited for the challenge, and I’m very ignorant to it, in a sense of like I don’t know anything about it. So [Johnson’s] teaching me the ropes, and hopefully we can execute on stage.”

The actor also told People that there is “absolute pressure” that comes with having dance training, but he’s “okay” with it.

“I’m here to have fun and dance and dance with an incredible partner and tell some fun stories,” he said. “She’s just [an] incredible, all-around person [and] teacher, which sometimes have a good performer, but [they] might not be able to teach. So I’m so grateful for that.”  

Dancing with the Stars airs returns on Tuesday, Sept. 15. on ABC and Disney+ and streams next day on Hulu.

Donald Trump isn’t sad about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leaving the U.S. for the U.K. 

The President spoke to reporters about the couple’s recent exit during an Oval Office press conference on Monday, saying, “I’m happy about it,” and adding, “No, I was not a fan.”

What does Trump think about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s move to America and their return to England? He shared, “I thought, look, I had a very good relationship with the Queen. Really good. I got to know her very well. A really good relationship with King Charles. I knew him as Prince Charles and King Charles. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a great, great guy.”

Of course, Trump didn’t hold back, telling reporters,  “And I thought they treated the royal family with great disrespect. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen and King Charles, and I don’t know. Maybe I’m different. I wouldn’t have taken them back. Frankly, if I were in the royal family, I would not have taken them back.”

In January of 2020, the Prince and his wife announced their decision to take a step back from their royal duties, telling the world in a statement, “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make the transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

By March of 2020, the Sussexes had officially moved to the U.S., living in Tyler Perry’s Los Angeles home. In July of the same year, they bought a home in Montecito, California. 

While Markle and Prince Harry did return to England in 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and in September 2022 for the Queen’s funeral, they did not return to royal life. Harry visited his home country two more times—in 2023 for his father’s coronation and again in 2024 after his father’s cancer diagnosis.

The couple returned to England in July of 2026, bringing their children (seven-year-old Archie and five-year-old Lilibet) to see their grandfather for the first time in four years. The following month, they announced plans to move to England. According to People, the Duke and Duchess arrived in the U.K. on August 26.

Rock singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen is known for his stage presence, recognizable voice, and talent for storytelling in songwriting. Many music fans have praised his songwriting skills over the years, and Springsteen has many standout songs.

But it was a surprising track released in 1982 on his album Nebraska that has been spotlighted for its compelling lyrics, and that’s “Johnny 99.” The track was included in the album but never released as a single, but it still gained plenty of attention after it came out.

Springsteen often uses his music to tell detailed stories about relatable characters and their struggles in life. In “Johnny 99,” the protagonist is a man who lost his job at an auto plant and couldn’t seem to find a new one.

One night after drinking, the man goes home, gets a gun, and shoots a store clerk. He is arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Distraught and reflecting on what led him to that moment, he requests that the judge sentence him to execution instead.

The lyrics of “Johnny 99” are grounded yet poetic, and it’s a story that’s hard to forget. The song was included on Forbes‘ list of the “Greatest Rock Song Lyrics of All Time,” which also included “Downbound Train.”

The final lines were highlighted as a particularly great part: “And if you can take a man’s life for the thoughts that’s in his head/ Then won’t you sit back in that chair/ And think it over, judge, one more time?/ And let ’em shave off my hair/ And put me on that execution line.” The publication also mentioned the opening of the track and called it “brilliant.”

In the book Counting Down Bruce Springsteen: His 100 Finest Songs, author Jim Beviglia also mentions “Johnny 99” as one of his best songs. He describes how “Johnny 99” features “action-packed storytelling full of criminal exploits and courtroom histrionics, [allowing] you to enjoy its thrilling surface.”

But what makes Springsteen’s songwriting so exemplary is how he takes it a step further. Beviglia said, “The almost nonchalant way in which Springsteen inserts the sociological subtext is where it leaves most other outlaw anthems way behind.” The tale of this one man’s life spiraling hides an interesting conversation about life and society.

Despite “Johnny 99” never becoming an official single, it still earned plenty of recognition from music fans. It even climbed the U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart thanks to radio play alongside other Nebraska album tracks.

In 1967, Bobbie Gentry turned a mysterious story about a Mississippi family, a young man’s death and an unnamed object tossed from a bridge into one of the year’s biggest hits.

“Ode to Billie Joe” was in the midst of its four-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 59 years ago today, an extraordinary achievement for a song that broke many of the rules of a conventional pop hit.

There was no chorus. The arrangement was sparse. The subject was dark. And at the center of the song was a mystery Gentry deliberately left unanswered: What did Billie Joe McAllister and the song’s narrator throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge?

Listeners have spent nearly six decades trying to figure it out. Gentry, meanwhile, made clear that they were concentrating on the wrong question.

“Ode to Billie Joe” unfolds around an ordinary family meal in the Mississippi Delta. As biscuits are passed around the table, the narrator’s mother casually shares the news that Billie Joe McAllister has jumped from the Tallahatchie Bridge.

The family continues eating and talking about everyday matters, seemingly unmoved by his death. Then comes the detail that turned the song into a national guessing game: A preacher had reportedly seen Billie Joe with a girl who looked like the narrator, and the two were throwing something from that same bridge the previous day.

By November 1967, months after “Ode to Billie Joe” had become a sensation, Gentry told the Associated Press that the mystery was still the first thing everyone wanted to ask her about, but she believed all that speculation missed the point of what she’d written.

“The song is sort of a study in unconscious cruelty,” Gentry explained. “But everybody seems more concerned with what was thrown off the bridge than they are with the thoughtlessness of people expressed in the song—and what was thrown off the bridge really isn’t that important.”

Listeners nevertheless supplied plenty of answers of their own. According to the AP interview, theories ranged from a draft card to a bottle of LSD pills. Other interpretations over the years have included flowers, a wedding ring and even a baby. Gentry knew what she had envisioned, but she intentionally declined to settle the mystery for her audience.

“Anyone who hears the song can think what they want,” Gentry said, before explaining what she believed listeners should actually take from it: “The real message of the song, if there must be a message, revolved around the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide.”

That was the unsettling heart of “Ode to Billie Joe.” A young man is dead, his girlfriend is sitting at the dinner table, and the family continues eating and talking without realizing the depth of what has happened.

“They sit there eating their peas and apple pie and talking, without even realizing that Billie Joe’s girlfriend is sitting at the table, a member of the family,” Gentry explained.

The object was important only insofar as it established a connection between Billie Joe and the narrator and offered a possible motivation for what happened the following day. As for what the object actually was, Gentry still wasn’t giving away her answer.

She did, however, offer the AP reporter one tantalizing possibility: “It could have been a wedding ring.”

Two years later, Gentry was still keeping the secret. She told The New York Times in 1969 that she’d had something specific in mind when she wrote the song, but considered it symbolic and unimportant to its meaning.

“I’ve never told anyone what it was,” she said, “not even my own dear mother.”

Capitol released “Ode to Billie Joe” in July 1967, and just five weeks later, it reached No. 1 on the Hot 100.

It stayed there for four weeks, from Aug. 20 through Sept. 16, 1967. By its sixth week of release, the single had already sold 1 million copies. It also crossed genre boundaries, reaching the top 10 on the Adult Contemporary and R&B charts and the top 20 on the country chart.

The success spilled over to Gentry’s debut album of the same name in spectacular fashion. Capitol received 500,000 advance orders for the album, surpassing the label’s previous preorder record held by the Beatles’ 1964 album Meet the Beatles!

The song also earned eight Grammy nominations. Gentry won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, while Jimmie Haskell won for his arrangement.

It also introduced a songwriter who would eventually be described by The Guardian as the “trailblazing queen of country.” The publication noted in 2018 that Gentry didn’t merely write her own material. She also became involved in virtually every aspect of her career, from television to designing clothes and creating album artwork.

Decades later, its reputation has only grown. “Ode to Billie Joe” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2023. Rolling Stone ranked it No. 51 on its list of the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time and no. 191 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The song also inspired a 1976 movie Ode to Billy Joe starring Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor, but even that didn’t provide Gentry’s answer to the question listeners had been asking since 1967. The film created its own explanation for the story rather than revealing what Gentry herself had imagined.

Perhaps that’s why “Ode to Billie Joe” remains so compelling 59 years after it sat atop the charts. Gentry gave listeners enough information to believe the answer was hiding somewhere in the song, then refused to hand them the final piece.

And all these decades later, the mystery remains in the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge.

Former Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel is at Burning Man for the first time, and she’s taking her followers along for the ride.

As expected, Frankel, 55, did not pack light for her inaugural Burning Man experience and has been showing off the outfits she has planned for the week-long desert gathering. “The fits are fitting, and I’m excited,” she captioned a video of herself packing for the event.

She followed up that video with a look at her Day 1 outfit, which is a white and silver outfit with a matching mini skirt, bikini top, fur-lined vest, fingerless gloves, oversized sunglasses, and a cowboy hat.

Frankel also packed several white catsuits, an ankle-length white coat for the chilly evenings, and plenty of revealing party looks.

“I’m open to an experience based on some personal things that have happened in my life recently, and why not try something? If I hate it, I can leave,” she shared on Instagram

As expected, fans are divided about Frankel’s decision to go to Burning Man. “Whole point is no phones, no grid… Midlife crisis… let’s grow up in our 50s lol. Looks like you are about to join J Lo on stage. Love you to pieces, but it’s time to grow up, beautiful,” one person commented.

It was the MasterChef: Global Gauntlet semifinals for the remaining five home cooks as the competition to win the grand prize of $250,000 and the trophy awarded by host/judge Gordon Ramsay, judge Joe Bastianich and judge Tiffany Derry continued.

Tonight, the final five home cooks faced two eliminations as they battled for a place in the finale with the double challenge of keeping up with Gordon and Tiffany as they recreate their signature dishes in real time.

Falling behind wasn’t an option as only three cooks will advance to the finale in the all-new “Keeping Up With Gordon and Tiffany” episode, so one cook went home after cooking with Tiffany and a second after Gordon. Heidi had the best representation, so she was safe as were Julia and Peter.

It was Basia, whose halibut was undercooked and who didn’t follow directions on the fonio, that was eliminated.

“It was very hard to leave the MasterChef kitchen, but I came to prove to my husband Michael that I am the best cook,” Basia said. “I have learned to believe in myself even more. I am very excited to get back home to pursue a culinary dream and open up a small restaurant in Jersey. So, watch out. You’re going to want to come and eat.”

The second challenge was to keep up with Gordon, who cooked an herb-crusted rack of lamb, with roasted eggplant purée, pea fricassée, pickled turnips and mint sauce.

None of the plates were perfect so it wasn’t obvious who was going home.

Gordon announced the first home cook through to the finale was Heidi, she was followed by Jake, and the last finalist announced was Peter, meaning Julia cooked her last time in the MasterChef  kitchen.

“I can’t believe I made it this far,” Julia said. “This has been so many dreams wrapped into one. I came here for more than myself. I came here for my grandmother, my Mimi. I have learned so much about my talent as a chef. I want to start a bakery someday and I want to thank MasterChef for the confidence and courage to pursue my dreams because the second I get home, I’m going to hit the ground running and get it started.”
