Nicholas Brendon's Cause of Death: What We Know So Far

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 8:04pm

Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Nicholas Brendon has died at the age of 54.

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news on Friday, Mar. 20 after receiving confirmation from Brendon's family.

"Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years," the statement read in part. "In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was."

The family also asked for privacy and thanked everyone who has shown love and support.

What is Nicholas Brendon's cause of death?

In their statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Brendon's family said he "passed in his sleep of natural causes."

The family added, "While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing."

In 2023, Brendon revealed that he had suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

The actor also had cauda equina syndrome, which according to the Cleveland Clinic, is a medical emergency that happens when an injury or herniated disk compresses nerve roots at the bottom of your spinal cord. Brendon had several spinal surgeries to treat this ailment.

It is unconfirmed if cauda equina syndrome or his heart issues contributed to his death.

Tributes and legacy

Brendon's Buffy co-star Alyson Hannigan took to Instagram on Mar. 20 to share a message to her late co-star and friend.

The actress shared a photo with Brendon from one of their scenes together on the series and wrote, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers.”

“I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair,” she continued. “I love you. RIP 💔😢.”

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 7:38pm

Kendra Duggar, wife of 19 Kids and Counting star Joseph Duggar, has been arrested for child endangerment—and her mugshot was just released by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas.

On Friday, Mar. 20. police in Tontitown, Arkansas confirmed via a press release that they’ve filed new charges against Joseph.

Joseph, 31, was previously arrested and charged for Lewd and Lascivious Behavior, involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor on Wednesday, Mar. 18.

The new charges in Arkansas—unrelated to the previous charges, which were filed in Florida—are four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, as well as four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.

Police later confirmed that Kendra, 27, is facing the same charges as her husband related to the Arkansas case.

Authorities arrived at the Duggar family compound around 1 p.m. on Mar. 20 to serve an arrest warrant for Kendra, however, she was not at home at the time, per local outlet KNWA/FOX24.

According to the sheriff's office, Kendra later was arrested and booked into the Washington County Detention Center in Fayetteville, Ark., at 4:56 p.m. local time. Their records state Kendra is 5 feet, 3 inches tall, weighs 130 pounds, and has blue eyes and blonde hair. She was released after paying her bond, which was set at $1470, and spent less than two hours in jail.

Kendra's booking shows she has a court date for the Arkansas charges on April 29.

No further information regarding the couple’s alleged crimes has been provided as minor victims are involved, according to police.

Joseph and Kendra have been married since 2017 and share four young children.

The Duggar Family did not immediately response to Parade’s request for comment.

1971 Rock Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 55 Years Ago Today

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 7:22pm

Over half a century since her sudden death at the age of 27, Janis Joplin's loss remains one of the most tragic in rock history. Particularly heartbreaking is the fact that the iconic singer recorded what would turn out to be her only #1 song just a few days before she died...and she wasn't around to see the tune turn into an all-time classic.

Written by Kris Kristofferson, "Me and Bobby McGee" wasn't just Joplin's only #1 hit. On March 20, 1971, it became the second posthumous single ever to make it all the way to the top of the charts. Otis Redding’s hit “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay" was the first posthumous #1 single in 1968.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, there was no "actual" Bobby McGee, but there was a Barbara "Bobbie" McKee. As the story goes, producer Fred Foster had been getting teased by his friend, songwriter Boudleaux Bryant, about the fact that he only visited Bryant's offices to see his secretary, the aforementioned Barbara.

Inspired by the joke, Foster pitched the idea for a song called "Me and Bobby McKee" to Kristofferson, who was a young songwriter on his roster at the time. It was Kristofferson who changed the "McKee" to "McGee." The song's signature line, “Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose," was sparked by Kristofferson's viewing of Federico Fellini’s 1954 film La Strada. “To me, that was the feeling at the end of ‘Bobby McGee.' The two-edged sword that freedom is. He was free when he left the girl, but it destroyed him," Kristofferson told Performing Songwriter.

'Me and Bobby McGee' appeared on the most successful album of Janis Joplin's career

Folk singer-songwriter Bob Neuwirth introduced the song to Joplin, who described it as "being written by a good friend" when she played it for the first time during a performance in Nashville. “He’s gonna be very famous…I give him a year," she added.

Joplin recorded her version of "Me and Bobby McGee" the next fall, but died nine days later. It was released on her final studio album Pearl, which came out in January, 1971, three months after her death. Pearl went on to become the most successful album of her career.

All these years later, the song is just as beloved as ever. At the time of this writing, it's been streamed 326,317,675 on Spotify.

1972 Career-Defining Classic Was a No. 1 Hit Song 54 Years Ago Today

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 7:11pm

In 1972, the band America released the song that would change everything.

Their single, "A Horse with No Name," became a massive success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and turning the trio into international stars almost overnight.

The band, made up of Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek, formed in London in the late 1960s. All three members were sons of U.S. Air Force personnel stationed in England, which is how the American musicians ended up launching their career overseas.

"A Horse With No Name," penned by Bunnell, stood out for its hypnotic acoustic guitar pattern and desert imagery, creating a sound that felt both minimal and atmospheric. The track was originally released in the UK in 1971 before gaining traction in the United States the following year.

"I was always trying to express myself musically, that way," said Bunnell of the song, which was largely inspired by his nomadic upbringing. "I also have always said, you've got three minutes in a song. I don't know how that came about or established that there was a time frame. Of course, there are much longer songs and whole sides of albums, but that's really not the norm. You've got three minutes to write a song and grab someone’s attention, and express some view and come up with a nice melody."

Interestingly, the song sparked early comparisons to Neil Young, with some listeners noting similarities in vocal tone and style. Despite the comparisons, the track quickly carved out its own identity and became one of the defining songs of the era.

The success of "A Horse With No Name" helped propel America’s self-titled debut album to the top of the charts, marking a major breakthrough for the band. Over the next few years, they would go on to release a string of hits, including "Ventura Highway" and "Sister Golden Hair."

"Obviously one of the great things about America is the combined strength," Beckley told American Songwriter. "Dewey is a fantastic partner and a great writer and singer and we really complement each other."

Though Peek left the band in 1977 to pursue a career in Christian Music, Bunnell and Beckley have continued performing as America. Peek died in 2011 at the age of 60.

More than five decades later, “A Horse With No Name” remains America’s signature song—a timeless folk rock classic that continues to resonate with listeners and define the band’s legacy.

Legendary Alt-Rock Singer Breaks Silence On Cheating Scandal

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 7:00pm

Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl has finally broken his silence on the affair that nearly ended his marriage of over 22 years to Jordyn Blum.

The 57-year-old rocker recently chatted with The Guardian about the scandal that nearly had Blum saying she was "done, done, onto the next one," revealing that he was willing to do the work to gain back the former model's trust.

In this case, the work was intense therapy, and Grohl revealed, "I’ve been in therapy six days a week for 70 weeks."

It's not lost on him how much time that took, and he also shared, "I did the math the other day: over 430 sessions."

Grohl admitted in September 2024 that he had fathered a child outside his marriage, an admission that had Foo Fighters fans reeling as many questioned if his marriage would survive. In his initial confession on Instagram, the "Everlong" singer vowed, "I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness."

It took nearly a year for Grohl and Blum to make their first public appearance together after the cheating scandal. The longtime couple looked happy together during their first red carpet appearance of 2026 (and only the second since his infidelity admission).

It was revealed in February 2025 that his affair partner was horror movie producer Jennifer Young after she confirmed as much for the New York Post. Their child, a girl, was born in August 2024. The child's first name has not been disclosed, but Page Six confirmed that she does have her father's last name.

Grohl also shares three girls with Blum: Violet, 19, Harper, 16, and Ophelia, 11.

Taylor Frankie Paul ‘Bachelorette’ Footage Leaks After Cancellation

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:53pm

Taylor Frankie Paul’sBachelorette season may be canceled—but that hasn’t stopped footage from making its way online.

A newly surfaced clip shared by an Instagram user on Friday, March 20 appears to show Paul filming a date scene for the now-scrapped season. In the video, the reality star is seen walking along a beach with one of her contestants, the two seemingly enjoying a private, picture-perfect setup that’s very on-brand for the franchise.

While it’s unclear which suitor appears in the clip, but fans theorized in the comments that Paul was with Casey Hux. With ABC pulling the plug on the season before its scheduled premiere, behind-the-scenes moments like this may be the only content viewers ever get.

View this post on Instagram

As previously reported, the network made the decision to cancel the season following the release of a video tied to Paul’s 2023 domestic violence incident involving her ex, Dakota Mortensen. The fallout has extended beyond just the show itself.

In the wake of the cancellation, all 22 contestants were brought into an emergency virtual meeting with producers. Sources who spoke with TMZ earlier today say the men were reminded that their contracts remain active for a full year, meaning they are still bound by strict confidentiality rules and cannot speak publicly about their experience.

The meeting reportedly included multiple lawyers and emphasized the importance of following network guidelines. An after-care team also hosted what was described as a “seminar” to support contestants navigating the sudden shift.

Despite the abrupt end to the season, there may still be opportunities ahead. Some contestants are reportedly being considered for Bachelor in Paradise, offering a potential second shot at reality TV fame.

For now, though, the clips will be the closest fans will get to seeing Paul’s highly anticipated Bachelorette journey.

Some Major Airlines Are Missing From the World's Best List for 2026

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:41pm

Every year, airlines around the world vie for top honors based on safety, service, comfort, and overall passenger experience. In 2026, the latest rankings from AirlineRatings.com revealed a fresh group of winners, but you might notice some familiar big names missing from the very top of the list.

Who Took the Top Spots in 2026

Topping the World’s Best Airlines rankings this year is Qatar Airways, which claimed the number one spot for 2026. Evaluators highlighted its innovative onboard product, including gate‑to‑gate Starlink Wi‑Fi, a comprehensive entertainment library, and consistent service standards across cabin classes. “Qatar Airways has consistently delivered a premium product… ensuring economy passengers are not left behind,” AirlineRatings.com CEO Sharon Petersen said of the win

Close behind in the full‑service category are carriers like Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines, praised for their premium service, cabin comfort, and global networks. Asian and Middle Eastern airlines in particular dominate the top positions, where long‑haul comfort and consistent service quality often outweigh sheer size or brand recognition.

Other airlines rounding out the global top tier include Korean Air, Japan Airlines, and Turkish Airlines, each celebrated for reliability, cabin experience, and long‑haul service consistency.

View this post on Instagram Major U.S. Airlines: Where They Landed

So what about the big U.S. carriers that many travelers fly daily? Unlike some past lists or other ranking systems, the AirlineRatings.com 2026 global ranking did not place United, Delta, or Southwest at the very top of the full‑service list.

Instead, U.S. airlines tend to appear lower down the global rankings or in hybrid categories. For example:

  • Delta Air Lines: The airline earned a respectable placement on safety lists and in hybrid airline rankings, but didn’t crack the World’s Best Airlines full‑service top tier.
  • United Airlines: Despite being one of the largest carriers in the world by fleet size and network, also didn’t appear among the highest‑ranked full‑service airlines in 2026, according to available data.
  • Southwest Airlines: A fan favorite in many U.S. domestic rankings, particularly in areas like on‑time performance and customer satisfaction, wasn’t highlighted among the world’s leading global carriers in this particular list.

It’s important to note that these rankings are based on specific criteria focused on global passenger product and consistency, which sometimes favors airlines with strong long‑haul offerings and premium cabin experiences.

Related: Southwest 'Priority Flyer' Claims Airline Tried to Force Him to Buy Second Seat

Why Some Big Names Didn’t Top the List

There are a few reasons why major U.S. carriers might be missing from the top of the world’s best airlines list this year:

  • Different Evaluation Criteria: Lists like these often emphasize global service offerings, consistency across cabins, and long‑haul network quality, areas where some carriers with large domestic networks may not score as highly compared to airlines with extensive international operations.
  • Innovation and Experience: Airlines like Qatar, Singapore, and Cathay invest heavily in premium experience, long‑haul consistency, entertainment, and onboard connectivity, which can boost rankings in global comparisons.
  • Competition from International Carriers: Some international airlines continue to expand rapidly, innovate in customer experience, and modernize fleets, factors that play well in global rankings where passenger experience and product quality are key metrics.

The 2026 world’s best airline rankings show a broad shift in how global carriers are evaluated, with Gulf and Asia‑Pacific airlines rising to the top through innovation, service quality, and global reach, while some familiar U.S. carriers aren’t featured as prominently in international categories.

That doesn’t mean U.S. airlines aren’t excellent or safe, many still rate highly in other studies and rankings, but in the global context of premium passenger experience, they simply didn’t outshine carriers like Qatar Airways or Cathay Pacific this year.

For travelers planning trips in 2026, this highlights how diverse and competitive the airline landscape has become and how priorities like comfort, innovation, and consistency continue to shape the world’s best airlines.

'Parent Trap' Star Explains Why She's Turned Down 'Dancing With the Stars' Numerous Times

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:37pm

Lisa Ann Walter may love Dancing With the Stars but appearing on the show is not in her future.

The beloved Parent Trap star, 62, recently explained why she can't be a contestant on the series despite being asked "numerous times." In an interview with People published on Friday (March 20), Walter explained that it all has to do with her role on Abbott Elementary.

"I am in an incredible position right now, in a very dicey industry, where I’m on a hit show. And so, they happen to film at the same time,” Walter said of Abbott Elementary's filming schedule conflicting with DWTS.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Last season, Walter often visited the DWTS set to support her longtime friend Elaine Hendrix and even briefly took to the ballroom floor for a dance, but explained that even those limited appearances were taxing for her.

“Even doing one episode with Elaine was so time-consuming that I don’t know how I could do it if the seasons run the same," Walter explained.

Walter noted that she'd still love to be on the show one day and hopes that her schedule will allow in the future.

“They used to do two seasons a year," she explained of DWTS. "If they did a spring season, call me!"

While we won't be seeing Walter vie for the Mirrorball Trophy anytime soon, Hendrix says the friends will always have the memories of their shared dance during Dedication Week.

"To have that moment makes me emotional. We will always be able to put on that video, watch it and go, ‘Oh my God, we did that. Look at us.’ She’s on a hit ABC show, I’m on a hit ABC show. We’re both back in the House of the Mouse, and it’s just this perfect storm. And I felt like it really, truly captured and celebrated our friendship," Hendrix told Woman's World in 2025.

'Bachelorette' Katie Thurston Prepares for Double Mastectomy Amid Cancer Battle

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:33pm

Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston shared a hopeful update amid her battle with breast cancer.

Thurston previously revealed that she was forced to postpone a scheduled double mastectomy late last year due to issues with her kidney. Now, the 35-year-old is preparing to go under the knife once again.

"I have surgery scheduled April 29 for the removal of both my breasts (DMX). This surgery was already rescheduled once and I won't delay it again," she shared via Instagram on Friday, March 20. "Because of the timing of my medication break and liver recovery and the date of my surgery which also requires pausing Kisqali, I'll continue to pause treatment for another two months. My hormone suppression (lupron/letrozole) does a lot of the heavy lifting in my cancer treatment and won't be paused. Removing the tumor will also be beneficial to fight against cancer."

Thurston added that she is going to give herself a social media break to clear her mind and reset her mental and physical health.

View this post on Instagram

"I'm going to take a week offline to focus on my health and habits. It's easy to doom scroll," she explained. "I'm not trying to be dramatic in announcing my time away. I'm OK. I'm going to be OK. Just need a reset. And in case any of those bot accounts announce I'm [dead], I am not."

Thurston was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in February 2025 and has been undergoing treatment for more than a year.

During a fan Q&A in December, Thurston was asked whether she feared dying.

"I’m more scared of not living while alive," she said simply. "Death will come when it’s going to come. So I want to enjoy my moments until then.:

Dave's Hot Chicken's Viral Hot Mozz Sold Out—Here's When It's Coming Back

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:25pm

Dave's Hot Chicken may be known for Nashville-style heat, but its newest menu item proves cheese can share the spotlight, too. The chain's recently launched Hot Mozz, a thick-cut fried mozzarella coated in Dave's signature spice blends, has already sold out nationwide in just a week after its debut.

According to the company, the limited availability follows the item generating tens of millions of social media views, helping drive what the brand describes as one of its most successful product launches to date.

What Makes Dave's Hot Mozz Different

Dave's Hot Chicken

Hot Mozz takes the familiar mozzarella stick and gives it Dave's signature twist. The premium mozzarella is breaded and fried, then dusted with any of the chain's seven spice levels, ranging from "Not Hot" to "Reaper." The result is designed to deliver the kind of dramatic cheese pull and bold flavor combination that performs especially well on social platforms.

The new item also starts at an accessible price point, with individual pieces available starting at about $2.99, along with combo meals and larger shareable options.

Social Buzz Helped Drive the Sellout View this post on Instagram

Social media buzz appears to have played a major role in the quick sellout. Videos highlighting the stretchy cheese pulls and crunchy coating have circulated widely, helping the product gain traction among fast-food fans and food influencers alike. Online discussions suggest customers were especially drawn to the novelty of combining Dave's well-known spice blends with a comfort-food favorite.

That enthusiasm shows up in online discussions as well. In Reddit threads discussing the new item, some customers described it as a natural fit for the brand's spicy menu, while others compared it to upgraded mozzarella sticks designed specifically for sharing and dipping.

The launch also reflects a broader trend. Fried mozzarella and cheese-pull foods continue to perform well across fast-casual menus, thanks in part to their visual appeal and shareability. That makes products like Hot Mozz a natural extension for chains looking to capitalize on social media-driven food trends.

When Will It Be Back?

Fans who missed out won't have to wait too long. According to the company, Hot Mozz is expected to return to locations nationwide by April 14.

When it does, it will likely arrive with even more demand. If the early reaction is any indication, Dave's Hot Chicken may have found another hit by applying its spicy formula to one of America's most reliable comfort-food snacks.

Scott shared his thoughts about his character, whom he played throughout the show's nine-season run until 1981, during a March 2026 interview on That's Classic. When asked if he shared any qualities with his Waltons' character, Scott suggested he didn't think so.

"Ben, honestly, was an idiot," said Scott, now 67.

He then explained that his character "was very impulsive" and didn't always make the best choices.

"He also was a lot more emotional than I am," continued Scott in the That's Classic interview. "I say that, [but] you ask my two daughters, I don't know, they might disagree. Ben definitely did a lot of different kinds of things that I'd go, 'What is he thinking? Why is he thinking this way?'"

He also said he enjoys watching the series to see his acting choices as a teenager.

"It's fun to watch them now and look at them and see that's my 16, 17, 18, 19 year old self interpreting a script and how different it would be looking at it now," said Scott.

Scott also shared that he used to watch The Waltons "religiously" when its first few seasons were airing. He explained he was curious as to how the scenes he shot were edited.

"They're going to edit it and I want to see how that works and adding of the music and the post-production, all that other stuff. I wanted to see how that would be," said Scott in the March 2026 interview.

He also said he believed watching the show as it aired enabled him to give a better portrayal of the Depression-era character.

"It also allows you as an actor to start to give them things that you think are going to work better for your character development," explained the actor.

Christina Applegate Thinks About Death ‘Every Day’ Amid Her MS Battle: ‘It’s Looming’

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:13pm

Christina Applegate is not running away from the prospect of death. Instead, she’s making preparations for the eventuality.

The actress, 54, was asked how often she thinks about death during the Thursday, March 19, episode of NPR’s “Wild Card With Rachel Martin” podcast.

“Every day ‘cause it’s looming,” she replied. “I mean, it looms for all of us.”

Applegate—who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021—elaborated on how her illness has impacted her approach toward death.

“For people who have a disease like this, you never know, you know?” she added. “I bought my [burial] plots already.”

Applegate described the undisclosed location where she will be buried as “really pretty,” noting that she purchased three plots for herself and her loved ones so they can be laid to rest together.

“I have to pick my tree out ‘cause they’re going to plant a tree there ‘cause it’s really sunny,” she shared. “And I want my visitors to not be sweating.”

As for how she came to select her burial location, Applegate said, “I’ve been thinking about this particular area of this particular place for so long. And I finally was like, ‘Is this available?’ They’re like, ‘Yes, it is.’ I was like, ‘Oh, my God, buying it now.’ Just buy it now. That way, nobody has to deal with it.”

Although Applegate is preparing for her life to end, she is still “very not comfortable” with the concept of her death because it’s “going to hurt my kid.”

“I get really scared about that. Now I’m, like, really afraid of it because of her,” she said through tears, referring to daughter Sadie, 15, whom she shares with her husband of 13 years, Martyn LeNoble. “I can’t even talk about—like, I don’t know what her life’s going to be like, and you don’t know when it’s going to be. [It] could be, like, anytime.”

In a February interview with People, Applegate revealed that she spends most of her day in bed due to the pain she experiences when she moves around. However, she insists on giving Sadie rides to school and her activities for the sake of quality time.

“I want to take her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” she told the outlet. “I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.’ And that’s what I do.”

While Applegate’s diagnosis has led her to take a step back from acting, she now hosts the “MeSsy” podcast with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, where the two share their journeys with MS. She also released her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, earlier this month.

“My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow,” Applegate said. “People’s lives, sorry for lack of a better term, f--king suck sometimes. So I’m being as honest and raw as I possibly can.”

Beloved '90s Actress, Who Appeared in Best-Selling Film, Turns 69

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 6:12pm

There aren't many actresses who can say that their career has spanned over four decades and they have been in over 50 feature films.

Theresa Russell, who is best known for her brooding, troubling and disturbing characters, is celebrating her 69th birthday on Friday. Born in San Diego and raised in Burbank, California, she began her career as a model in the 1970s, which caught the attention of film producer Sam Spiegel, who cast her as the daughter of a prominent film executive in the film The Last Tycoon. In 1980, she starred in Nicolas Roeg's Bad Timing, which earned critical praise and was where Roeg and Russell started dating and eventually got married. The thriller marked the first of six projects the couple would collaborate on together.

The actress finally got her mainstream recognition when she played the lead serial killer in Bob Rafelson's 1987 film, Black Widow. Starring Russell, Debra Winger, Sami Frey and Nicol Williamson, the crime drama follows two women: Catherine (Russell), a troubled widow who murders wealthy men she married for money, and Alexandra Barnes (Winger), a Department of Justice agent who becomes obsessed with bringing her to justice.

After Black Widow, Russell continued to act in many of her husband's projects before moving on to indie films in the 1990s, like Wild Things and The Believer. In the 2000s, she held many supporting roles in TV shows and mini-series like Empire Falls, Fringe, Cold Case and Liz & Dick. In 2007, she played Emma Marko in the film Spider-Man 3, which made over $885 million worldwide and was the highest-grossing filmof the Tobey Maguire trilogy and held the record for the biggest opening weekend.

As Russell continued acting, she realized that she didn't want to be in stereotypical Hollywood movies and started gravitating towards arthouse and independent films.

"The Hollywood movies in those days were more the male macho lead type of movies; the actress had to show that he had a heart of gold, and she had to have sex with him. Those were the roles, and I wasn’t interested in doing that," Russell explained to Film Talk in October 2025. "I always had this vision of being an edgy and serious actress, and I wanted to do interesting things. Not the ones that made a lot of money and were more Hollywood."

Though Russell retired from on-screen acting in 2012, she is still very active in the film industry. She served as the Jury President for the 52nd Film Fest Gent in Belgium last fall and has been living a quiet life away from Hollywood.

1961 Best-Selling Classic Became a No. 1 Hit 65 Years Ago

Fri, 03/20/2026 - 5:45pm

While the '60s were full of defining artists like The Beatles,James Brown, The Supremes, and Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley continued his chart-topping streak with a 1961 hit track. The rock n' roll icon released a best-selling single that was originally created as an Italian ballad.

Published through Elvis Presley Music, "Surrender" became Presley's fifth chart-topping hit that started a two-week run on March 20, according to ThisDayinMusic. It was released on February 7 of that year, with the track "Lonely Man" serving as the B-side single. The popular song was created by songwriters Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, who made it into an adaptation of the 1902 Neapolitan ballad "Torna a Surriento" ("Come Back to Sorrento").

According to details behind the ballad, it was composed in 1984 by Italian musician Ernesto De Curtis, with lyrics done by his brother, poet and painter Giambattista De Curtis. The original ballad has been sung by various artists over the years, like Frank Sinatra, Meat Loaf, Luciano Pavarotti, and many more.

Presley was one of the few who releases re-arranged version of the song, alongside Dean Martin, who released an adapted version by Joseph J. Lilley titled "Take Me In Your Arms" on his album Dino: Italian Love Songs.

"Surrender" peaked on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts for two straight weeks and became certified Platinum by the RIAA. It had Presley on vocals and vocal quartet The Jordanaires as backing vocals alongside Millie Kirkham. Scorry Moore, who formed Presley's Blue Moon Boys, served as the lead electric guitarist with Hank Garland on acoustic. Bob Moore played the double bass with D.J. Fontana on drums, Buddy Harman on percussion, Floyd Cramer on paino and Boots Randolph on Saxaphon.

The release of the song continued Presley's streak of chart-topping hits until The Beatles took over the title with six consecutive No. 1's between 1965 and 1966.
