‘Hope Valley: 1874’ Stars Bethany Joy Lenz & Benjamin Ayres Reveal Why the Prequel Will Be the Hearties’ New Obsession (Exclusive)
Sweeping across the Western Canada frontier in a rickety covered wagon, Rebecca Clarke (Bethany Joy Lenz) and her 11-year-old daughter, Sarah, arrive in Hope Valley in 1874, determined to start over – regardless of the cost.
The journey is harsh, and the setbacks are relentless, yet Rebecca, a fiercely independent widowed mother to Sarah (Mila Morgan), understands the courage, resilience, and bravery it takes to start anew. She also sees early on that perhaps she needs to accept help from local rancher Tom Moore (Benjamin Ayres), as she becomes an integral part of the close-knit town of Hope Valley.
Hope Valley: 1874, the new Hallmark series is a prequel to the popular historical drama, When Calls the Heart, which finishes up its dramatic Season 13 on Sunday, March 22. Preparation for Season 14 is already underway, according to the producers.
Early in the series, Rebecca’s fresh start quickly unravels: her wagon breaks down, and the boardinghouse she bought is not what was advertised. Still, she finds an unexpected connection with Tom and develops a friendship with tenacious pioneer woman and the owner of the trading post, Hattie Quinn (Jill Hennessy), and her artistic daughter, Olivia, (Roan Curtis).

At its core, Hope Valley: 1874 showcases themes of perseverance and resilience amid the tremendous odds and harsh conditions of the rugged and hopeful Pioneer era, highlighting how a group of scattered settlers slowly forms the tight-knit community that viewers already know and love.
Known for nearly a dozen Hallmark original movies and the series, One Tree Hill, Lenz says that she was attracted to the period story for a myriad of reasons.
“What actor doesn’t dream of working with a community that’s been proven to be supportive and a wonderful place to work,” Lenz exclusively told Parade about the enthusiastic fan base known as The Hearties. “I’ve got friends on set and in the area. So there was so much about this role that felt like it was right for me.”

Ayres said there was a cloak of secrecy when he first read the script, which was entitled 1874, and he had no idea it was a Hallmark production.
Among the attractions, he said, “was that I get to play a cowboy back in 1874, getting to ride a horse in the mud, spending time outside, and I get to work with Bethany, and we get to tell this incredible story. All of this was there even before we started reading the amazing script for the first episode.”
When it comes to the scenes that find Rebecca on horseback, Lenz, an experienced rider since age 18, says that was a perk of the job. She has enjoyed owning horses over the years. “I would say I’m an intermediate rider, who really enjoys it. The horses feel very grounding for me, so I’m so happy to be around them every day. Often, if they can’t find me on set, I’m in the barn, cuddling with the horses.”

Lenz, Hennessy, and the other women in Hope Valley: 1874 are well aware how difficult life was for women in the rugged frontier, and that resilience and tenacity are just a few of the character traits they need to survive.
For Lenz, the first aspect of pioneer women she noticed had everything to do with the clothing at the time. “When I stepped into the corset, I immediately saw how incredibly efficient it is at keeping women helpless,” she said.
“You can’t move, you can’t use the restroom easily, you can’t breathe very well. It’s easy to faint. You don’t want to eat because it gets all kind of stuck, and you don’t want to drink too much because it’s difficult to take the time to undo everything to use the restroom. It’s so complicated that you really need help.”

As a result of this newly-found constriction, Lenz found it extremely “frustrating, especially as someone who is a very physical person. I like to use my body and dig into whatever I’m into, so that was a whole new challenge. It was very different from the freedoms that I experience on a day-to-day basis.”
But in addition, she said that it helped her understand the women of the time period. “The corset, which every woman wore, helped put me in the mindset of how women used to feel constrained. It was such a social norm and such a fundamental piece of their lives and existence, it would be like the townsfolk going without a shirt.”
Lenz said she quickly became humbled by the challenges faced by Rebecca and other women in that time period. “Think about what this woman has to do amid all of these physical and social constraints. Any woman back in that time who was living on the prairie was digging, plowing, cooking, and taking care of babies.”
She added that simple actions cannot be taken for granted, including “walking up a flight of stairs while carrying your child. You can’t carry anything else because your other hand is gathering your skirt. So I am in awe of the fact that Rebecca is so capable and has figured out all these other life hacks that I didn’t think I would ever need to know.”
For Ayres, who has starred in a dozen Hallmark movies since 2016, he appreciates “the sacrifices our grandparents and great grandparents have made, and how difficult life was in that time period. They lived without modern technology and medicine, yet look how fulfilled they were, and the genuine sense of community they created.”
He added that while we have all of the “beautiful things” that make up modern technology. “We actually don’t really have the same type of obstacles that require being outside and working hard and, at the end of the day, feeling accomplished alongside a supportive group of people. I hope that those who watch it can appreciate what our families did to get us to where we are now, and also maybe inspire us to do some more of that ourselves.”
When it comes to the romantic aspects of the show, both Lenz and Ayres agree that it wouldn’t be a Hallmark series or a compelling story if there weren’t heavy doses of love and romance, alongside the period drama.
Among the romantic storylines are younger couples in their 20s, as well as the more mature Rebecca and Tom, who are in their 40s, which can be trickier. “Here we are trying to figure out how to negotiate a new connection with somebody that we don’t know, Lenz explained.
“It’s about building trust in a time when so many people were strangers. You couldn’t just go up and say, ‘Hey, friend, do you vouch for this person?’ You really have to trust your gut, watch somebody, and let the thing grow and slowly build. Trying to figure out how to do that when we’re coming together with a backpack full of life experience that we have to unpack together, it’s hard.”
Ayres added that any potential relationship between Rebecca and Tom “would take place amid the tragedy, and all of the trauma, that’s yet to be dealt with. Early on, they are at the stage of trying to trust one another. What’s so beautiful, as the audience will see right from the get-go, there is a spark, and it’s about the two of them not allowing them to ignite it.”
He added that he sees that “they’ve built these walls up and we’re going to see them slowly pull them out brick-by-brick. There is this ice in Tom’s heart that’s being thawed by Rebecca. Ultimately, they both want the same thing: they want to build something that lasts, they want to support a younger generation, and they both want to protect others.”
Benjamin Ayres on the Hallmark+ series 'Hope Valley: 1874'Hallmark Media/Photographer: Jeff Weddell
Lenz agrees with her co-star about their characters. “I think that they are both really caring people who have been hurt, and it takes time to learn how to trust again, but when people who’ve experienced that are able to trust each other, I think something really beautiful happens and can grow.”
She added that she is “looking forward to seeing the fruition of that, but also that’s the beautiful thing about a series, that we have time to build that anticipation, we don’t just have to get to it real fast. That’s something I do really love about the two of them.”
In keeping with Hallmark’s dedication to celebrating strong women, Lenz said she loves Rebecca’s grit and tenacity. “Her determination is an innate trait that I recognize in Rebecca. She has survival mechanisms in that way, to just keep going, come what may, come hell or high water.”
But Lenz sees Rebecca as a complicated female character. “I also appreciate her softness, which is just underneath the surface. It’s like there’s a layer of stone, but if you can crack it, it’s really soft and gooey underneath. It’s right there, you just have to find the cracks, I definitely relate to her in that way.”
The cast encourages everyone to watch the new series, especially fans of When Calls the Heart, who are sure to enjoy this origin story.

“It’s a real fun shared experience for everyone to build what will become Hope Valley with us,” Ayres said. “And I am eager for everyone to fall in love with the characters while they are falling in love with one another. I think the show provides a safe danger from your sofa to go on a journey with us.
Added Lenz. “I believe they will love the community, the simplicity, and the legacy of what came before,” she said. “This is a show that’s going to enrich your life when you watch it. We’re really bringing something to the table that you can meditate on.”
Hope Valley: 1874 premieres on Saturday, March 21, exclusively on Hallmark+ with a new episode available every Thursday beginning March 26.

Will There Be a Season 2 of 'The Madison'?
Taylor Sheridan’s television universe keeps getting bigger. But with The Madison, the prolific creator takes a step away from ranch wars and frontier rivalries to tell a more intimate story. The new Paramount+ series, led by Michelle Pfeifferand Kurt Russell, follows the Clyburns, a New York City family who experience Montana’s Madison River valley after a devastating loss forces them to rebuild their lives.
Moving between the energy of Manhattan and the sweeping landscapes of Big Sky country, the drama explores how grief, resilience and unexpected connections can reshape what family really means.
Here’s everything to know about whether there will be a Season 2 of The Madison on Paramount+.
Yes! According to an Entertainment Weekly interview with star Kurt Russell, the second season has already been filmed. Some schedule shifting by Taylor Sheridan and Michelle Pfeiffer, who are both executive producers on the series, was required as Russell wasn't available as he was filming the second season of AppleTV's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
“Michelle Pfeiffer and Taylor were able to get together with the people at Paramount+ and said, ‘Well, let's do two seasons instead of just one,’” Russell told EW. “‘And then before we start the second season next year, instead of doing that, we will start with Kurt's stuff. We really do want him to play the guy. And we'll get his first season out of the way first, and jam all that in there, and then go into the second season and do that.’ And so we were able to do that.”
Who is in the cast of The Madison?Michelle Pfeiffer (Stacy Clyburn)Kurt Russell (Preston Clyburn)

Patrick J. Adams (Russell McIntosh)
Matthew Fox (Paul Clyburn)
Will Arnett (Dr. Phil Yorn)
Amiah Miller (Bridgett Reese)
Alaina Pollack (Macy Reese)Is The Madison a sequel to Yellowstone?
No, The Madison is not a direct sequel to Yellowstone, but it does take place in the same universe created by Taylor Sheridan. Instead of continuing the Dutton family story, the new series focuses on a different group of characters—the Clyburn family. While it shares the setting and thematic DNA of Yellowstone, The Madison tells its own standalone story with a new cast.
Was Matthew McConaughey supposed to be in The Madison?Yes and no. Matthew McConaughey was originally linked to a Taylor Sheridan project rumored to be titled 2024, which was expected to film in late 2024 and serve as a continuation of Yellowstone. However, according to a report from Puck, McConaughey’s involvement may have been overstated, and he ultimately did not move forward with the project.
Around the same time, Sheridan reworked the concept that eventually became The Madison. What was initially envisioned as a series continuing the Dutton story shifted into a standalone drama set in the same universe, centered on a new family rather than the Yellowstone ranch.

32 Years Ago, a Legendary Musician's AIDS Crisis Anthem Became an Unlikely Oscar Winner
On March 21, 1994, Bruce Springsteen won an Academy Award for "Streets of Philadelphia," one of his most emotional and haunting songs. Unlike his songs such as "Secret Garden," "I'm on Fire," or "Growin' Up," which were used in different films, he wrote "Streets of Philadelphia" specifically for the 1993 film Philadelphia.
Seven days after it was released as a single, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. Two months later, it reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. No one was more shocked than The Boss.
"I would never have thought in a million years it was going to get radio airplay," he admitted to the Asbury Park Press in 1996. "But people were looking for things to assist them in making sense of the AIDS crisis, in making human connections. I think that is what film and art and music do; they can work as a map of sorts for your feelings."
At the 66th Academy Awards, he was up against Neil Young (whose song "Philadelphia" had also been written for the film), "Again" from Poetic Justice, "The Day I Fall in Love" from Beethoven's 2nd, and "A Wink And A Smile" from Sleepless in Seattle. When Whitney Houston read his name, he looked surprised and happy.
"Thank you. See, this is the first song I ever wrote for a motion picture, so I guess it’s all downhill from here," Springsteen joked in his acceptance speech.
Directed by Jonathan Demme, it starred Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett, a gay man and lawyer who is fired from his job after they learn he's contracted AIDS. Denzel Washington plays Joe Miller, the lawyer who agrees to represent him. Over the course of the movie, Joe overcomes his homophobia to care for Andrew and to see him as a person just as deserving of understanding and compassion as anyone else.
Two years later, Springsteen received his second Oscar nod. He wrote "Dead Man Walkin" for the film Dead Man Walking, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Unfortunately, lightning didn't strike twice, and he lost to "Colors Of The Wind" from Pocahontas.
49 Years Ago, a Single-Word Country Hit Broke Hearts and Conquered the Charts
Forty-nine years ago, a country song with a single-word title soared to the top of the charts, putting one name in the spotlight and giving everyone who shared it a fleeting moment of fame.
Kenny Rogers dominated the country and pop charts with the song "Lucille" in June of 1977. The song told the story of a brokenhearted man whose unhappy wife had left him and their four children behind.
According to U Discover Music, the song was included as part of Rogers' self-titled 1977 album. The single crossed over for Rogers, becoming a pop hit, and reaching No. 5 on the Billboard charts by June of that year.
The Tennessean shared a deep dive into the song's creation in 2017. The song was written by Hal Bynum and in the interview, he addressed the urban legend that the song was named after Rogers' mother, Lucille.

"No," he responded when asked if that were true. However, he added that the name "sings good."
Rogers addressed the similarities between his biggest hit and his beloved mother in an interview as reported by Taste of Country. After the song became a hit, he said his mother called him up on the phone thinking the song was about her.
"She called me up on the phone one day, and said 'Kenneth Ray, what are you doing?' I knew when she said that I was in trouble," the singer revealed.
"She thought I was putting her business out on the street," he recalls. "She said 'How dare me tell people she had four hungry children.' I told her 'First of all, you have eight kids. Secondly, I didn't write it, and thirdly, it's not about you. Then she tamed down a little bit."
RELATED: 1975 Country Apology Ballad Turned Heartbreak Into a No. 1 Hit
In fact, Bynum told The Tennessean that the song was inspired by a sight-impaired busker on the streets of Norfolk, Virginia, where he was on shore leave. "I was walking up this hill looking for a bar, and on my way there, there was a blind man coming down the street playing guitar and singing, and he had a cup on the end of his guitar," he explained.
"There was some people and kids going along with him and when he got through with it I went on to the bar. I kept thinking about him and finally wrote that song," he continued.
RELATED: 1978 Unforgettable Country Warning Song Beat Its Own Songwriter to No. 1
Bynum concluded that he ultimately sat down with a fellow songwriter named Roger Bowling, and together, they finished his original song idea. "When we sat down to write, I said, 'You know I’ve got this song and I don’t know whether Kenny would want it or not.' I sang it to him, and he said, 'Man, that is a monster (for) anybody,'" the songwriter concluded.
Additionally, the song was covered by Waylon Jennings, Justin Moore, and Billy Currington.
Kenny Rogers would go on to become one of the most beloved country artists of his generation. He died on March 20, 2020, at 81.

Iconic '90s Actress, With 6 Emmy Awards, Turns 64
Known as the "Queen of Nice" and the talk show host of her very own, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, the iconic actress and comedian is celebrating her 64th birthday on Saturday.
Born on March 21, 1962, in Commack, New York, in an Irish-American family. She began her career as a stand-up comedian and performed in clubs around Long Island. When she was 20 years old, O'Donnell got her first big break on Star Search.
Afterward, she started acting in sitcoms, making her TV debut in Gimme a Break! in 1986. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she appeared in many movies, including Stand By Your Man, A League of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, the live-action film adaptation of The Flintstones, Beautiful Girls, Exit to Eden and more.
Rosie O'Donnell attends Inaugural SignLight International Film Festival: Opening Night Screening Of "Being Michelle" at SilverScreen Theater on April 16, 2024 in West Hollywood, California. In 1996, she started hosting her own daytime talk show, titled The Rosie O'Donnell Show, under her production company KidRo Productions. During the show's six seasons, she won multiple Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Talk Show and Outstanding Talk Show Host. The Rosie O'Donnell Show was filmed at Studio 8G in 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City, the same studio that now shoots Late Night with Seth Meyers.
In October, O'Donnell was a guest on Sam Pang Tonight, where she reflected on her times as a talk show host and who her favorite (and least favorite) guests were. The A League of Her Own actress revealed that Barbra Streisand and Martin Short are her favorites, while Keanu Reeves was her least favorite because "he's not good on talk shows," but she "loves the guy."
O'Donnell also loved Broadway and musical theater, and constantly had cast members as guests and encouraged her audience to see shows. She even promoted shows with ticket giveaways and premiering production numbers.

Her first stint only lasted from 2006 to 2007, due to her contract expiring and tensions with co-stars Star Jones and Elisabeth Hasselbeck regarding the Iraq War. The talk show host ended up returning in 2014, but only stayed for five months after announcing that she was leaving to focus on her personal health and family. Thanks to her short run, ratings rose to 27% during her first year on The View, despite the overall downward trend for most daytime broadcast shows.
When she left The View for good, O'Donnell held many guest and supportive roles in various TV shows. But after years of working in Hollywood, the actress and her youngest child, who has special needs, immigrated to Ireland to escape the United States political climate after the 2024 election, with plans to return "when it is safe." She did call in to Cuomo Mornings on Feb. 13 to reveal that she took a trip to New York to visit her family for two weeks and that one of her sons is expecting their first child.
"I don't regret leaving at all. I think I did what I needed to do to save myself, my child and my sanity," the mother of five said. "The energy I felt while in the United States, it was scary. There's a feeling that something is really wrong and no one is doing anything about it."

Nancy Guthrie Update: Former FBI Agent Raises Possibility of Chilling Motive
A retired FBI agent says the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie may not fit the typical profile of a kidnapping for ransom. Instead, the former investigator suggests the case could involve a more personal, potentially chilling motive. Authorities have not confirmed a motive, but the perspective adds a new layer to the ongoing investigation as leads continue to be followed.
"There's too much involved. There are too many ways people can get caught," Harry Trombitas told Yahoo! about the possibility that the kidnapping was for money. "[The motive] could be for revenge of some type, anger or it could be for a third purpose that we're just not even aware of," he added.
Parade reached out to former NYPD detective David Sarni, who is a professor at John Jay College, to get his take on the possible motive in the case. For Sarni, there just isn't enough information at this point.
"The detectives still are unable to tie the evidence to a cause for the Nancy’s abduction. I haven’t changed my opinion on a motive because I let facts obtained determine it. I don’t have a motive because of that," Sarni says.
Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. In his latest interview with NBC News, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said that he believes that Guthrie was targeted.
"We believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we, we can't, we're not 100% sure of that," Nanos said in the interview. "So it'd be silly to tell people, 'Yeah, don't worry about it. You're, you're not his target.' Don't think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you're safe. No, keep your wits about you."

1974 Top 5 Funk Anthem Was Inspired by a Classic No. 1 Rock Riff
In 1974, Kool and the Gang had a huge hit with the song “Jungle Boogie.” The song, from the band’s 1973 album Wild and Peaceful, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 9, 1974, and was on the charts for 22 weeks. “Jungle Boogie” was ranked as one of the top singles of 1974 by the music outlet.
“Jungle Boogie” became a club classic at the dawn of the disco era. The song featured a funk guitar track, bass riff, horns, and plenty of hollers. But it was actually inspired by an iconic classic rock riff.
In an interview with Songwriter Universe, Kool and the Gang founding member Ronald “Khalis” Bell recalled, “'Jungle Boogie' was something that I was working on. I was listening to Edgar Winter’s ‘Frankenstein’ record. I thought, Wow…that riff is interesting…how he’s doing that. Then I just took a structure from the rhythm, and I came up with [the horn riff].”
Bell continued working on the song at home. “I went home, and I said, 'Wow…this is an interesting track,'" he recalled. “At the time, we needed to do this ‘jungle’ record. I started singing 'Jungle Boogie boogie woogie, Jungle Boogie boogie woogie.' But when I got to the studio, I thought I’ll take all of that middle part out and just go 'Jungle Boogie…Jungle Boogie.' And that’s how we came up with 'Jungle Boogie.' [It was] just pure rhythm.”
Piecing together ‘Frankenstein’“Frankenstein” was a rock radio hit at the time Bell wrote “Jungle Boogie." The instrumental track, from the Edgar Winter Group’s album They Only Come Out at Night, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1973.
In a 2013 interview with Vintage Rock, Winter revealed that he wrote the famous “Frankenstein” riff years before the song was released. “I wrote it in ‘68, something like that, when I was still playing with my brother Johnny,” he revealed. “That riff I developed to feature my instrumental abilities. I played Hammond B3 and alto sax … So it was that riff I wrote on the Hammond... 'Dada dada da da da da.' We used it for years to walk on to, jam to, etc."
Winter incorporated different incarnations of his riff intro into the group’s live shows, never intending “The Instrumental,” as he called it, to be recorded.
“But then, when we released ‘Frankenstein’ as a B-side to ‘Hanging Around,’ maybe it was, it started to get underground FM airplay,“ he shared. “Then AM picked it up, and they were editing it, it just exploded, and it made it to Number One, which was unheard of for an instrumental, really.”
Kool and the Gang needed a hit“Jungle Boogie" came at just the right time for Kool and the Gang. In an interview on the Questlove Supreme podcast, band member George “Funky” Brown revealed the group was under pressure from their record label to come up with a hit song.
“We started coming up with this music,” he said, “We were playing it. We had ‘Jungle something,’ but it was [saxophone player] Dennis Thomas that came in, and when he heard the track, we said ‘We’re calling it ‘Jungle Jim.’ He said, ‘No man, people are boogieing. Let’s call it ‘Jungle Boogie.’ Bingo, done.”
Bell confirmed that apart from the “Frankenstein”-inspired riff he’d been working on, the rest of “Jungle Boogie” came fast. “We made the song up in the rehearsal, went in and recorded it that night,” the music legend revealed. “ ‘Jungle Boogie’ is one take. There’s no more to that. Three minutes and, ‘Okay, enough of that.’ ”

JetBlue Plans to Launch a 'More Affordable' First Class Option for Travelers
For years, JetBlue has been the "cool kid" of the skies, winning over travelers with the most legroom in coach, free high-speed Wi-Fi and a business class (Mint) that many argue is the best in the country. But if you’ve ever felt like there was a massive jump between a standard seat and those lie-flat beds, you aren't alone. JetBlue has officially confirmed it's bridging that gap by launching a brand-new domestic first-class product starting in summer 2026.
The move is a pragmatic one for the New York-based carrier, which has seen travelers increasingly willing to pay a little extra for a lot more comfort. By introducing what insiders are calling "Mini Mint" or "Junior Mint," JetBlue is finally giving loyalists a way to upgrade on shorter flights where a full lie-flat bed doesn't quite make sense.

If you’ve flown first class on Delta or United recently, the new JetBlue seat will feel very familiar. The airline is opting for the Collins Aerospace MiQ recliner, a gold standard in the industry. You can expect a spacious 2-2 configuration (no middle seats here!) with a seat pitch—that's the distance between seats—of about 36 to 37 inches.
The rollout is scheduled to begin with a prototype in June 2026, with fleet-wide installations kicking off that August. JetBlue plans to retrofit about 20 planes a month, focusing first on its older Airbus A320s and A321s, as well as the nimble A220s. By the end of 2026, the airline expects about 25% of its non-Mint fleet to feature the new cabin.
Related: Delta Launches New Interactive Quiz for Your Euro Summer Plans
The "Catch" for Economy TravelersAs a traveler, I’ve always loved JetBlue specifically because I didn't feel squashed in the back of the plane. However, to make room for these new first-class rows without losing total seat count, the airline has to find space somewhere.
That space is coming from the "Core" economy cabin. The famous 32-inch legroom—currently the best in the U.S.—will drop to 30 inches. While this is still the industry standard for many other carriers, it marks the end of an era for JetBlue’s "most legroom in coach" claim. If you’re a tall traveler, you'll likely find yourself looking toward the "Even More Space" seats (at 35 inches) or the new first-class cabin more often.

Why the Change Matters NowJetBlue wants to keep its premium travelers from drifting away to legacy carriers. As CEO Joanna Geraghtynoted regarding the target audience: “We want it to be accessible for people who want to fly domestic first and maybe can’t afford to do it on the legacy carriers.”
By offering a more affordable premium tier, JetBlue is positioning itself as the "humane" alternative to budget airlines while still competing for those lucrative first-class dollars. Combined with the opening of its second BlueHouse lounge at Boston Logan this year, JetBlue is clearly betting that the future of travel isn't just about getting from A to B—it's about how much better you feel when you land.

Quote of the Day: Brené Brown on Being Vulnerable in Life
Brené Brown is a well-known name in the self-improvement community, especially to people who listen to podcasts and read self-help books about courage, vulnerability, shame, empathy and leadership. Whether you read or listen to her words, they have an undeniable impact on so many people. From Oprah Winfrey to Reese Witherspoon, Laverne Cox and more, so many famous people not only love what she has to say, but take her advice and insight seriously, as Inc has reported. And if you’re someone struggling with being vulnerable or your authentic self, our quote of the day might just be what you need to hear.
To those who aren’t familiar, though, Brown is an academic and a podcaster who’s also a research professor at the University of Houston, holding the Huffington Foundation Endowed Chair. Plus, she’s the Professor of Practice in Management at the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business. Both of those universities are her alma mater, where she went to school for social work and has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in social work, per Inc.
In addition to being an academic, she’s an author of six #1 New York Times best-selling books and the host of two award-winning podcasts. Basically, if you want her knowledge, there are absolutely ways to find it. And lucky for you, our quote of the day has one of her best kernels of advice for you to ponder and use as inspiration, whether you struggle with vulnerability or not.

Quote of the Day by Brené BrownCanvaPro/Parade
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”
In a 2012 TED Talk titled “Listening to shame,” Brown spoke about the topic of shame and vulnerability so well that it has over 8 million views 14 years later. This quote comes from that specific talk.
Right before it, she says that lots of places asked her to come speak for them after she blew up from her first TED talk—from schools to Fortune 500 companies and more. But one thing they asked her was to not mention vulnerability and shame (two of her big talking points, mind you). Instead, they wanted her to talk about “innovation, creativity and change.” Which led to her stating this:
“So let me go on the record and say: Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”
She goes on to say that she didn’t learn about courage, vulnerability, creativity and innovation from her vulnerability research. She learned it from her studies on shame. And as you can probably guess from the title of the talk, she brings all of this back to that concept. How we can’t escape shame, and leaning into talking about it, letting it lead conversations, is not only freeing but necessary to excel as humans. You have to face shame head-on to continue creating human connections, which is the whole point of living.
Related: 6 Ways We Sabotage Our Own Authenticity Without Realizing It
Deeper Meaning of Brené Brown’s Quote: VulnerabilityRight after this quote, she says that creating a new thing out of something is vulnerable in and of itself. And there’s no way around it.
Digging deeper, Brown is saying that you can’t disconnect creation from taking accountability for things that have happened to you in the past, or maybe even things you’ve done. So when those companies wanted her to speak about innovation, creativity and change without mentioning shame and vulnerability, it’s just not possible. You cannot have the former without the latter.
In another quote from her 2012 book, Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, Brown compounds on this concept. She writes:
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.”
A lot of times, we’re not open and honest about our feelings, trauma or past because we have our walls up. And that is super limiting when you’re trying to build something, whether that’s building a bond with someone, an invention or a strategic plan. In order to cultivate a concept, a connection or something else, the best things come out of clear, honest minds that are unburdened by blockers, including shame.
Once you’re able to show up authentically—in relationships, at your job or for yourself—you’re free to forge the best ideas and produce the best innovations possible. And proper change can come from that, too. Plus, if you’re bogged down by shame and the burden of holding back, change is nearly impossible.

- “Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.”
- “Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.”
- “We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.”
- “The dark does not destroy the light; it defines it. It's our fear of the dark that casts our joy into the shadows.”

Hyatt Just Opened a Stunning Coastal Retreat in Portugal
If your group chat has been buzzing about Portugal lately, you aren’t imagining it. The country has officially moved from "hidden gem" to the top of everyone’s bucket list, especially for women in their 50s and 60s looking for that perfect blend of safety, culture and—let’s be honest—incredible wine. This isn't just a hunch; the numbers back it up. Recent 2025 travel data shows a 35% year-over-year increase in solo female travel insurance purchases, and according to the latest Junamour Solo Female Travel Report, Portugal consistently ranks highest for safety, walkability and value among solo travelers.
If you’ve been waiting for the right excuse to finally book that flight, Hyatt just handed it to you. On March 19, the brand officially opened Masana Algarve, its first "Destination by Hyatt" resort in Portugal. Tucked away in the quiet coastal village of Olhos de Água, it feels less like a sterile hotel and more like that chic, breezy beach house you wish your coolest friend owned.

View this post on Instagram Space to Breathe (and a Kitchen You’ll Actually Use)The struggle with long-haul travel is often feeling cramped in a standard hotel room after three days. Masana Algarve fixes that by offering 33 residences—we’re talking spacious one- and two-bedroom suites and villas.
The design is pure "coastal calm": earthy tones, natural textures and a massive private outdoor space for your morning coffee. But the real game-changer? Every residence has a fully equipped Bosch kitchen. Even if you aren't planning on cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner, having a high-end fridge for your local market finds and a real living area makes a "long stay" feel sustainable rather than exhausting.
Rooftop Sunsets and Wellness That WorksWhen you’re ready to emerge from your villa, the resort has two spots that are already becoming local favorites. Casa da Praia is your sun-drenched go-to for a relaxed lunch by the pool, but the TUPUQ Restaurant & Bar on the rooftop is where you’ll want to be for sunset. It pairs Mediterranean flavors with panoramic Atlantic views—the kind of spot where "one drink" easily turns into an entire evening of good conversation.
For those of us who travel to recharge, the wellness setup here isn't just an afterthought. The spa features sensory showers and a traditional hammam, and there's even an adults-only pool tucked into the landscaped gardens. It’s designed for that specific kind of peace where you can actually hear yourself think.

Explore Like a LocalWhile the resort is stunning, the location in Olhos de Água is the real star. You’re just steps from winding coastal paths and those iconic golden cliffs the Algarve is famous for. You can wander into the Old Town of Albufeira for some traditional fishing village charm, or just spend your afternoon on the turquoise shores of Maria Luísa beach.
