The most haunting song The Cure ever released started as a child’s bedtime story.

Robert Smith was around 12 years old when his older brother read "Charlotte Sometimes" aloud to him and his sisters at night. Penelope Farmer's novel tells the story of Charlotte, a girl who falls asleep in a new boarding school and wakes up 40 years earlier, during World War I, in the body of another girl named Clare. Each night, the two switch places. Charlotte becomes Clare. Clare becomes Charlotte.

Years later, Smith grew up and started a band. But he never stopped thinking about the book.

The obsession ran deeper than most people know. The Cure named their actual headquarters "Charlotte House" after Farmer's novel. Smith's love for the book wasn't just a passing influence. It was pivotal.

Farmer was herself an identical twin, and her obsession with doubles and reflections gave the novel its strange emotional pull. Charlotte's boarding school, with its large echoing hallways and perfectly made beds, becomes a place where identity doesn't just evolve but disappears entirely. The time travel in her story isn't scientific. It's emotional. Charlotte slips through decades the way we slip through stages of life: almost without noticing, until one day we wake up as someone else completely.

When he finally wrote the song, he didn't just draw inspiration from the novel. He transcribed it, in some instances, almost verbatim.

Farmer had written: "By bedtime all the faces, the voices, had blurred for Charlotte to one face, one voice."

Smith sang: "All the faces, all the voices blur / Change to one face, change to one voice."

Smith himself called it a "straight lift." He was not exaggerating.

The song was recorded over two days in July 1981 and released that October, with "Splintered in Her Head" as its B-side, itself named after another line from the novel. "Sometimes I'm dreaming, where all the other people dance," Smith sang, as if life were something happening elsewhere, to someone else completely.

The music video was filmed at Holloway Sanatorium, a Victorian mental asylum outside London, where Smith mimes the words of the song as ‘Charlotte’ wanders the corridors. The single’s cover featured a distorted photograph of Mary Poole, Smith's girlfriend and future wife, her face familiar yet virtually unrecognizable. That same image, undistorted, would reappear years later on "Pictures of You," linking love and time in one unbroken thread.

By then, The Cure were deep in the bleakest stretch of their career. Faith had just come out. Pornography was on the way. "Charlotte Sometimes" sits between those two records like a bridge between worlds: quiet, meditative, and circling itself like a thought you can't quite shake.

When Smith and Farmer finally met backstage at Earl's Court in the mid-1990s, he handed her a copy of her book to sign and told her the story of the older brother and the bedtime readings.

"My elder brother used to read to us at bedtime," he said. "I was about 12 or so, and he was still reading books to us. Your book was one of them. It never got out of my head. Once I got into music, I wanted to make a song about it."

He apologized for not being able to play "Charlotte Sometimes" in the main set. "We've got to publicise the new album," he said. "We'll play it as an encore. I promise."

He kept the promise.

Then he handed her the book to sign and smiled. "You can see how inspired I was," he said. "How I nicked it."

Farmer had been mildly irritated when she first realized how directly he had used her words without permission. After meeting him in person, she wrote that seeing her story reborn as a song felt "like finding a child lost in time."

It's a perfect description. Not just of the song but of what art does when it works.

The Song New Fans Always Find Last

"Charlotte Sometimes" was never on a Cure studio album. Not Seventeen Seconds, not Faith, not Pornography, and not anything that followed. It exists officially only as a single and on compilations, which means you can't find it by going through the discography in order. You find it the way people used to find things: someone plays it for you, or you see it on a setlist, or you stumble across it on a playlist and can't believe you've never heard it before.

Every generation of Cure fans has a Charlotte moment. The first time people find it, they usually ask the same question: why is this not on an album?

Right now, a new wave of fans is asking that question for the first time.

The Cure won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2026 for Songs of a Lost World, their first new record in sixteen years, which topped the charts in the U.K. On June 8, 2026, Robert Smith confirmed on BBC 6 Music that the band's follow-up album is "done" and about to be delivered to Universal. He described it as "more dismal than Songs of a Lost World" and "quite dark." The band is currently on its 2026 European summer tour through August, playing festival headline slots and arena shows across Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, and beyond.

In June 2026, Smith made a surprise appearance with Olivia Rodrigo at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, giving a generation of new listeners their first taste of what The Cure sounds like when someone who grew up loving them brings them into a new room.

They'll find "Charlotte Sometimes" eventually. They always do.

Robert Smith turned a bedtime story into a hymn about forgetting and becoming. Penelope Farmer wrote about a girl who fell asleep in one time period and woke in another. Smith wrote about the feeling of never quite waking up at all. Forty-four years later, the song is still finding new listeners who can't believe it was never on an album and still resonates because the confusion it describes never really went away.

Some songs don't age because they were never meant to belong to a single moment.

"Charlotte Sometimes" is one of them.

Six decades after they were recorded, unheard David Bowie songs are finally being released. 

The Shel Talmy Recordings, out Sept. 18, features 21 tracks from 1965, including 10 previously unreleased recordings made before his 1967 debut.

These recordings date back to when Bowie was still going by David Jones and collaborating with producer Shel Talmy, whose credits include the Who and the Kinks.

The collection also features early performances by guitarist Jimmy Page and keyboardist Nicky Hopkins, who would later collaborate with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many more.

Fans can pick up the album on CD, LP or digitally, in addition to a limited-edition vinyl version with alternate artwork. Only 1,965 copies are being pressed.

When Did David Bowie Start Recording Music?

Before becoming David Bowie, he released his first single, "Liza Jane," in 1964 as Davie Jones with the King Bees. He went on to record with the Manish Boys before joining the Lower Third in 1965.

While working with the Lower Third, Bowie recorded several tracks with Talmy, including the single "You've Got a Habit of Leaving." The following year, he changed his name to David Bowie to avoid confusion with the Monkees' Davy Jones.

After recording a few more singles with the group, Bowie decided it was time to go solo, releasing his debut album in 1967.

Its theme—of a husband and father trying to return to his wife and his son after a brutal war—resonates worldwide throughout art, literature, language and pop culture.

What stars stand out in The Odyssey cast?

Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, the king of Ithica.Anne Hathaway gives a searingly strong—and potentially Oscar-worthy—standout performance his ever-faithful wife, Penelope, holding things down back at the palace, wondering when—and if—her king will have a homecoming. Should she give in and remarry, and move on?

Tom Holland breaks free of the Spider-Man movie web as Odysseus’ son, Telemachus, who sets out on his own trek to find his father—or find out what fate befell him. Robert Pattinsonis the film’s hissable villain Antonius, who shakes things up as a smarmy suitor with his eye on Odysseus’ wife, and on the spoils of the royal throne.

There’s also John Leguizimo as Odysseus’ loyal servant, the blind swineherd Menelaus, Lupito Nynong’o as Helen of Troy, and Zendaya as the goddess Athena. Mia Goth is a disloyal maidservant, Charlize Theronis the seductive sea nymph Calypso, and John Bernthal plays the king of Sparta. Transgendered actor Elliot Page (formerly Ellen Page) is Sinon, who plays a pivotal role staging the Trojan horse attack. In a nod to the tale’s roots in oral tradition, the rapperTravis Scott makes an appearance as a bard, spreading an early version of the Odysseus legend.

Should you see The Odyssey in IMAX?

The movie opens with the words “A tale of apparent magic,” and that’s true in more ways than one. In addition to the fantastical elements of the story, there’s also movie magic. Nolan, one of the most commercially successful and creatively ambitious directors in Hollywood today (his previous film, Oppenheimer, won seven Oscars and grossed nearly $1 billion), makes The Odyssey an immersive, transportive experience, more than just a story on a screen. Filmed entirely with new 70mm IMAX cameras, it’s a hyper-visual experience made to be seen as large as it was made, so don’t be stingy. Fork over the few extra IMAX bucks and behold its wide-ranging wonders.

Eschewing CGI and computerized effects for physical props and sets, and filming on location throughout the Mediterranean and beyond, Nolan takes us along for Odysseus’ legendary adventures—captured by a monstrous cyclops, clashing with giant woodland warriors, escaping from a sorceress (the terrific Samantha Morton) who turns men into animals, steering his longboat past the seductive song of the sirens, and navigating the treacherous passage between the whirlpool Charybdis and the multi-headed monster Scylla. We’re there for the siege of Troy, with Odysseus and his men packed like sardines into a wooden horse, their elaborate ruse to gain entry to the city and destroy it. There’s even a side trip to hell, where they encounter a blood-slurping legion of the undead.

It all comes to a head with a brutal showdown and Odysseus rights a few wrongs—and breaks out his trusty bow and arrows one final time.

Is The Odyssey appropriate for kids?

It gets a bit too intense for young kids, hence the R rating. It’s suffused with magic and mysticism, but it can be ominous, scary and bloody. The music and sound, by Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson, is a perfect complement to the imagery, full of experimental, non-traditional orchestral noises and ancient instruments that enhance the mythic, meaty elements of the story.

How long is The Odyssey?

But for all its dark wonders, this Odyssey grounds its nearly three hours of wide-ranging, high-seas, gung-ho adventure in a very human story about a bond between a father and his son, the enduring love of a husband and his wife, and the emotional toll wrought on Odysseus by years of war, wondering and wandering. It’s a story about loyalty, faithfulness, sacrifice, guilt and retribution. And at the end of his long road, Odysseus is tired, weary and worried about the path of destruction he’s been carving. “To burn the walls of Troy,” he laments, “was to burn the world entire.”

Hmmm…. Maybe that’s a cautionary message this ancient tale holds even for our world today, and where it might be headed.

Even when The Odyssey was weeks away from opening, it had already sparked a clamorous backlash and a bit of burning of its own from critics who wanted to harp on its casting (too ethnically diverse, they said), its authenticity (those longboats look more Nordic than Greek) and its dialogue (Telemachus refers to his father as “dad,” and there are several f-bombs).

Is The Odyssey worth seeing?

But such reproach is but a handful of small stones thrown at a towering achievement. Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey is an epic movie for an epic story, an odyssey in more ways than one, and a movie that’s going to be watched, discussed and lauded for a long time to come—in alignment with the ever-malleable story of Odysseus itself, which has endured for 2,500 years.

And hey, it’s probably the only film you’ll ever see with a rapper, Zendaya as a goddess, Spider-Man, a 50-foot-tall cyclops in a cave, and a bunch of pigs that used to be guys.

Comedian and Abbott Elementarystar Lisa Ann Walter, who plays beloved, spunky teacher Melissa Schemmenti on the Philadelphia-based show, has a real-life love of education, advocacy for under-resourced schools and the City of Brotherly Love, and she shared that and more in an exclusive conversation with Parade.

Abbott Elementary just concluded its fifth season this April, but the Emmy Award-winning show is already renewed for season 6, which currently has an anticipated release date of late 2026 or early 2027. Walter couldn't tease much about the upcoming season of the show—she actually shared that the actors typically don't get a heads up about specific plot details until table reads—but she did sing the praises of Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson and discuss the biggest shocker from season 5.

"Quinta has been in the writer's room [for season six] for probably a little over a month now, about a month, and I have heard nothing. She doesn't come out and say, 'Hey, so this is going to happen.' I mean, maybe sometimes she does, like when Janelle's [James] character Ava was going to be fired for this long," Walter explained, holding up her fingers to reflect a short period of time. "She probably said, 'Don't worry; you're not really fired. It's for the story.' But other than that, they're very closed-mouthed about it."

She also addressed one of the biggest plot points from Abbott Elementary season 5, Gregory and Janine's (temporary) breakup, saying, "I thought we were going to go into the beginning of season six with them broken up. That's what I thought was going to happen, and that was one thing I did ask Quinta before the table read. I was like, 'Are you guys going to stay broken up?' And she was like, 'No, audiences don't like that.'"

"The thing that's really wonderful about Quinta is that she first of all considers—I mean, she is going to write her story, not just like, 'Oh, people want this, so let's do this'—but she really understands television. She has studied it...Quinta is really smart at understanding what audiences want to see and what frustrates them," Walter said of Brunson.

Regarding Gregory and Janine's future, she added, "I think there are new things to explore, especially with this young couple who are struggling financially that, you know, there's ambitions going on. There's all sorts of things that could get in their way, so I can see a lot more story for them whether they stay together, break up or go back and forth."

About her love for Philadelphia, Walter shared, "Once I started doing the show, I could not stop reading about Philadelphia, listening to interviews with Philadelphians, listening to the accent of the people who are specific to what would be Melissa Schemmenti's family there, and also, I started going."

She continued, "I just fell in love with the city, I fell in love with the people, and vice versa, and now I go every year at least once to do stand-up. And I'll be there again this July; it's the only gig that I'm doing this hiatus because I've been in New York doing a stage show. So, the one stand-up gig that I'm doing on this break is in Philadelphia."

Walter also reflected on the nearly 30 years since the movie The Parent Trap, in which she played Chessy, was released. In addition to her own real-life connections to the story—including the very odd coincidence that she gave birth to her twin sons on Hallie and Annie's birthday in the movie—Walter shared how much the story still means to her.

"I continue to feel incredibly blessed that I was a part of something that has been meaningful to people for decades, that there are now people who were kids when the movie came out that, like Lindsay [Lohan], are grown adults with their own family, and they're showing the movie to their kids. And the fact that I was beloved in that movie and continue to be so is, I mean, an actress can hardly ask for anything more than that," she said.

Currently, Walter is also partnering with BIC on the Bring Joy BIC to School campaign and the BIC Supply Ride bus tour, which is a national tour offering tools and supplies to teachers from the Kids In Need Foundation network, who are invited to "shop" for free. The New York City kickoff of the tour took place on July 13, and the next stops include Atlanta, Austin and Chicago.

Chicago released their fifth album in 1973, which included a rock track written by Peter Cetera, "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," that would be an inspirational hit for fans about picking up the pieces and moving on.

"Feelin' Stronger Every Day" was first released as part of the album Chicago VI before it gained popularity on the charts as a single. The track ended up reaching No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, with Cetera collaborating with trombonist James Pankow to develop it. While the song is tagged as a motivational and inspiring anthem, its backstory is based on heartache.

According to drummer Danny Seraphine, "Peter wrote that song about his marriage falling apart. He'd gone through a real hard time and was starting to feel stronger again."

The divorce being described was likely the one between Cetera and his first wife, Janice Sheely. They married in 1968 and divorced five years later when "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" was created. Neither of them has ever publicly discussed the reason for the split.

Instead of writing a breakup anthem, Cetera saw it as a way to move on from the heartache and even commented that the song was meant to be "both healing and moving on after the end of a relationship." Pankow added that while the song's inspiration was a broken heart, he felt that the band had never been stronger.

The spark of creation behind "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" actually happened while Chicago was on the road in Ohio for a gig that was delayed due to the weather. Cetera heard Pankow messing around with what would be the start of the song.

"I can remember the exact beginnings of that one... We were at the Akron Rubber Bowl in Akron, Ohio, an outdoor gig that was delayed a bit because of rain, and so, we got there our normal hour and a half before the gig, and we're sitting around, and we were told we're gonna hold for at least an hour, and I heard Jimmy [Pankow] in the other room playing the actual beginning of that song... and I said, 'What is that?' and he went, 'Oh, I don't know, I'm just messing around.'..." explained Cetera notes of a album box set.

"I went and got my bass, and we sat there and played around with it, and a few weeks later, after we got off the road, I went to his house, and we wrote 'Feelin' Stronger Every Day'."

Not only did the track gain traction as a resilient anthem about moving on, but it also tied into Chicago's skyrocketing fame at the time. Critics felt the song deviated from what fans were used to and had successfully outdone themselves.

Wedding planning is officially underway for The Real Housewives of Rhode Island breakout star Alicia Carmody, just don't ask her for a date quite yet.

After viewers watched her fiancé, Billy Kitsilis, surprise her with another proposal during the RHORI finale, Carmody shared an exclusive update with Parade on where things stand now.

"I'm working on finding a place," she says. "I don't have a date. Baby steps."

Even her daughter, Selina, needed some convincing after the emotional “re-engagement”.

"She doesn't believe it," Carmody says with a laugh. "She was like, 'Yeah, right.' Like, pigs might fly before you guys get married."

While the venue search is still underway, Carmody already has a clear vision for her bridal style.

"I definitely would have two dresses," she reveals. "I'm more of a mermaid. So a mermaid, I think. Maybe like a cupcake, too."

While wedding planning is top of mind, Carmody is also embracing Rhode Island's favorite season through her partnership with Baileys Minis, which she says has become a staple for summer get-togethers.

"I especially love the minis because I think they're so cute," she tells Parade. "I love a little sweet. You can put it in your purse, and I feel like it's so cute to go to your friend's house and be like, 'Oh my God, here's a mini! Let's have some minis together with a straw.'"

As a Rhode Island native, Carmody says there's no better place to spend the summer.

"The best thing to do is go to the beaches. Our beaches are beautiful," she says. "Get seafood, have a Baileys, a Del's lemonade... it's just beautiful."

As she looks ahead to a busy summer filming Season 2, Carmody is also looking back on one of the biggest moments from RHORI's first season. Billy’s second proposal caught many viewers by surprise, including Carmody herself.

"I was taken back by it," she says. "That's why I was like, 'No, I don't want it,' because I was nervous, to be honest with you. It felt wrong, but it was supposed to happen. I got nervous. I was shy, I guess."

Despite the couple openly discussing challenges throughout Season 1, Carmody says their relationship has stood the test of time.

"Like any relationship, I was very open about ours," she explains. "Any little doubts I had, I just put it all out there. But obviously he's a good guy, nine years later. I would have left him a long time ago! We have our problems, like everyone does."

The reunion itself was far more nerve-wracking than fans may have realized.

"I was shaking, actually," Carmody admits. "I was physically sick for the first 20 minutes. You don't know who's going to come for you or what people are going to pull out of their briefcase or their purse."

Looking ahead to Season 2, the Bravo star says she's learned an important lesson after watching herself on television.

"I think I'm going to be more aware of people coming for you," she says. "I was very naive. And I'm trying to think about the words I say before I say them."

Still, fans shouldn't expect a completely different Alicia.

"When you watch yourself back, you're like, 'Oh my God, did you think before you said that?'" she laughs. "But I'm sure I'm not going to change that much anyway."

Kelly Bensimon has faced a frightening string of health scares in recent months.

The former Real Housewives of New York City star says she is “lucky to have walked away alive” after she and celebrity chef Andrew Molen were injured in a violent head-on car crash in Sarasota, Florida. The accident comes just months after Bensimon underwent emergency surgery and feared she might have breast cancer after doctors discovered a ruptured breast implant.

Bensimon, 58, tells Page Six that she was hospitalized after the crash, suffering injuries to her arm and a head injury after her body slammed into the seat during the impact. She underwent X-rays and a CT scan after the collision, which sent all airbags in the vehicle deploying. Bensimon and Molen were passengers in an Uber at the time of the crash.

“My right arm is a mess,” she told Page Six. “My head went straight into the back of the seat. It was really bad. I was unconscious for a couple seconds. I was freaking out. I thought I broke my arm.”

She added, “I am totally out of it, I am in so much pain. My head went back and banged [Andrew] on his chin. There were makeup marks on the airbag.”

Molen recalls seeing the other car come "straight on. You didn’t hear brakes screech. He came straight in at full blast. We got hit so hard. Kelly went flying. I hit the ceiling. Airbags went off. There was dust everywhere."

The reality star says the crash has been another terrifying reminder of how quickly life can change — especially after the emotional ordeal of discovering her implant had ruptured and waiting for doctors to determine whether cancer was present. Fortunately, those tests came back negative, but Bensimon says the experience encouraged her to pay closer attention to her health and urged other women not to ignore changes in their bodies.

"There's nothing wrong with having fear," she told InTouch. "But at some point you're going to have to get tested."

One of music's strangest feuds is about to come to a head this November as Phil Collins is set to meet maybe his most vocal critic in the music industry, and that is Noel Gallagher of Oasis.

Gallagher has been extremely candid about his genuine hatred for Collins over the years, finding him to be a sign of something wrong with music at large, even going as far as calling him "the antichrist" and saying that “people f****** hate Phil Collins and if they don’t, they f****** should.”

Now, the two are set to meet face to face as they're both being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame on November 14th, and apparently Collins is quite excited.

"The inductees have all been invited to a lunch before the ceremony. Which will be interesting, as I'm sure I'll bump into Oasis," Collins said, adding "I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here, and I'm assuming he doesn't really think I'm the antichrist."

It can be assumed that things go a bit deeper than that, as the two have had very choice words for each other over the years. Other than the previously mentioned jabs, Gallagher was also quoted in a documentary as saying “I want the severed head of Phil Collins in my fridge by the end of this decade.”

Collins would eventually respond to all the hate by saying "They’re just horrible. Horrible guys. They’re rude, not as talented as they think they are... They keep having a go at me, which is, I find strange. He’s actually called me the antichrist of music. If you can stomach their behavior, then the music is okay."

Gallagher would respond to this response, calling him an "old fella" who would "take offense to anything."

It's sure to be an interesting time having these two meet at the induction with all of this bad blood brewing.

Italian businessman Gianluca Cugnetto, with whom Hannah Waddingham was in a romantic relationship for a decade, is the father of the actress’s young daughter. However, the couple split when the child was only two years old, and Waddingham has raised her as a single mother since 2023.

Simon & Garfunkel were riding a wave of success with "Mrs. Robinson" when they released "The Boxer," which captured attention for its heartfelt narrative in its lyrics during a hard time.

Released in March 1969, "The Boxer" was written by Paul Simon, and its lyrics tell a first-person narrative about a boxer overcoming the struggles of loneliness and poverty in New York City. It would become one of the duo's most successful singles, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and internationally.

The rock ballad itself came during a difficult time for Simon when he felt people were overly critical of him and their songwriting after years of praise.

"I think the song was about me: everybody's beating me up, and I'm telling you now I'm going to go away if you don't stop. By that time we had encountered our first criticism. For the first few years, it was just pure praise. It took two or three years for people to realize that we weren't strange creatures that emerged from England but just two guys from Queens who used to sing rock 'n' roll. And maybe we weren't real folkies at all! Maybe we weren't even hippies!" he explained in a 1984 Playboy interview.

Not only were the themes of "The Boxer" inspired by Simon's own life, but also the words and stories he read in the Bible. He would sometimes read the book while he was in his hotel room and ended up taking inspiration from a few phrases.

“I think I was reading the Bible around that time,” he recalls. “That’s where I think phrases such as ‘workman’s wages’ came from, and ‘seeking out the poorer quarters’. That was biblical," he said.

The biblical references would also translate into the track's creation, which took over 100 hours to record. It became one of the duo's most highly produced tracks of their career and was performed in multiple locations during its recording, such as St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University for the vocals. The track itself took a lot of creative control to get the perfect sound.

Drummer Hal Blaine developed the heavily reverberated drum sound for " The Boxer " by placing the drums in front of an elevator in the office of Columbia Studios. He played the drums at the end of "Lie la lie," which effectively scared one of the security officers coming out of the elevator.

In 1990, Simon told SongTalk magazine that the line of "Lie a Lie" was a "failure of songwriting" because he used it in place of a proper chorus. He admitted he didn't have any words at the time, and still feels embarrassed singing the part. Regardless, "The Boxer" became a lasting hit and an anthem among fans about perseverance.

One of music's most celebrated drummers turned 54 today.

System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan was born on July 15, 1972, in Beirut, Lebanon. The Armenian-American musician moved to Los Angeles when he was a child after his family fled his home country amidst the  Lebanese Civil War.

Dolmayan joined the rock band in 1997, replacing original drummer, Ontronik "Andy" Khachaturian, who was forced to leave the group following a hand injury. Known for his unique drumming style, Dolmayan has frequently been referred to as one of the best drummers in recent history and was placed at No. 33 onLoudwire's list of the "66 Best Metal and Hard Rock Drummers of All Time."

In 2006, Dolmayan took home a Grammy Award when System of a Down won Best Hard Rock Performance for "B.Y.O.B.," the powerful lead single from the band's fourth studio album, Mezmerize. Upon its initial release, he track peaked at No. 27 on theBillboard Hot 100. The rockers made waves in 2005 when the band's guitarist and vocalist Daron Malakian shouted an unscripted profanity during a performance on Saturday Night Live, leading to the band being banned from the show.

"It’s ridiculous that people make a big deal of it, incredibly ridiculous that it’s newsworthy," Dolmayan said in response the temporary ban, per Far Out. "It’s just a word. We didn’t kill anybody. People should relax. If you’re old enough to be up at 11.30, I’m sure that you’ve heard that word before, and it’s not going to affect your delicate sensibilities if you hear it again."

Outside of music, Dolmayan previously owned a comic book store in Las Vegas. Opened in May 2017, Torpedo Comics was previously described as the largest collectibles retailer in Nevada. The passion project started from Dolmayan's lifelong love of comics and collectables.

"I started selling in the early ’90s, because at 18 years old, it’s tough to go to your parents and say, ‘Can I have some money for comic books?’ ” he told theNeon Review-Journal. "Initially, I started off by losing a lot of money trying to sell books at conventions and stuff like that until I figured out how to do it."

While, as of July 2026, the brick and mortar location has official closed its doors after a decade in business, the store still operates an online store.

As more travelers tap into their sense of adventure and seek out destinations beyond the usual hotspots, one such place may have fallen off some vacationers' radars — at least for now.

The U.S. Embassy issued a security alert this week for one of Latin America's more under-the-radar destinations, a country often associated with strict government control and political tensions. The warning comes after comedian Ari Shaffir claimed he was denied entry, drawing attention to an increasingly complex landscape for tourists.

But the latest notice has nothing to do with celebrity jaunts and everything to do with the nation's upcoming July 19 holiday, when officials expect people could flood the streets amid large gatherings and potential protests.

Should You Visit Nicaragua This Summer?

Nicaragua is a name we all know, but may feel they'll never check it off our wishlist.

Not exactly laying out the welcome mat to outsiders with its existing "Level 3: Reconsider Travel" advisory, the latest Embassy-backed alert isn't doing this off-path country any favors.

Nicaragua's Liberation Day is July 19, a time when locals aren't flocking to the very paradise beaches travelers dream of visiting; instead, mass demonstrations are expected in the capital city of Managua, home to the country's main airport.

The same is expected for August 1 - August 10, for the celebration of Santo Domingo.

The good news is most visitors venture off elsewhere to the colonial townscape of Granada or hit the coast to the resort town of San Juan del Sur, which are not listed in the latest alert.

While gatherings are expected to 'remain peaceful' as the Embassy's official statement put it, the real draw to Nicaragua is what's yet to be discovered by mainstream tourism: its tropical Caribbean islands (yes, plural!).

Not to sound corny, but these two Caribbean hideaways offer very different versions of island life.

Big Corn Island, the larger of the Corn Islands, offers a more developed getaway offering the majority of the region's restaurants, hotels, and transportation, while still delivering the crystal-clear waters and colorful coastal scenery travelers crave.

Little Corn, on the other hand, is the smaller sibling that feels like a true escape from modern life. With no cars allowed, visitors explore the island by foot along sandy paths, spending sunny days snorkeling, diving, and relaxing on secluded beaches away from whatever chaos is expected to ensue on the mainland.

In fact, Little Corn Island and Mango Beach are ranked as some of the best beaches in the world this year by Corona.

If only more people knew they existed.

Getting cancer doesn’t come down to one cause. Genetics, infections and viruses, environmental and chemical exposures, and lifestyle habits all can cause cancer to form in the body. Because of this, no one can prevent getting cancer completely, but there is a lot you can do to lower your risk.

“Diet plays an important role in cancer prevention, although it is only one piece of the puzzle alongside factors like smoking, obesity, physical activity, alcohol use, infections, genetics and environmental exposures. Research suggests that a substantial portion of cancers could be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices, with diet being one of the most important modifiable risk factors,” Dr. Amar Rewari MD,the chief of radiation oncology at Luminis Health and an adjunct assistant professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, tells Parade.

According to scientific research, you can lower your risk of cancer by between 30 and 40% by maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. When it comes to eating with cancer prevention in mind, you likely already know the basics. You know that eating lots of vegetables, fruit, plant-based proteins and lean animal proteins is going to protect your body better than a diet high in ultra-processed foods high in sugar or salt.

But you may not have considered how your go-to cooking oil is impacting your cancer risk. Cooking oil is a staple and is so commonly used in the kitchen that you likely often reach for it without even thinking about it. But considering that it’s what we consume most often that impacts the body the most, it’s worth considering how the oils you cook with are affecting your health, including your risk of getting cancer in the future.

With this in mind, Parade asked three oncologists about their go-to cooking oil, as well as the cooking method they avoid with oil.

General Dietary Tips for Lowering Your Risk of Cancer

“Diet is extremely important when it comes to cancer prevention,” says Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, an oncologist and the author of Eat Your Ice Cream: Six Simple Rules For a Long and Healthy Life.

For example, Dr. Emanuel points to scientific research showing that a diet high in fiber is associated with a lower risk of several types of cancer, including colon cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer. How’s that for motivation to eat more veggies?

He also explains that drinking alcohol—even light to moderate alcohol consumption—is associated with increasing the risk of certain cancers, including colon cancer, breast cancer and esophageal cancer.

If you want to eat with cancer prevention in mind, integrative oncologist Dr. Gary Deng, MD, PhD, recommends eating primarily whole foods instead of ultra-processed foods and making three-fourths of every meal plant-forward (a way to get that all-important fiber). 

He also recommends stopping eating when you’re about 80% full. This is one way to reduce the risk of obesity, a health condition that increases the risk of cancer.

The Cooking Oil That Can Decrease Your Risk of Cancer

When we asked the oncologists about their preferred cooking oil, all three had the same exact answer: extra-virgin olive oil. “Extra-virgin olive oil is the best cooking oil you can have,” Dr. Emanuel says.

According to scientific research published in the journal PLoS One, consuming extra-virgin olive oil every day is associated with a 31% decreased risk of cancer—that’s a pretty significant impact.

What makes extra-virgin olive oil so protective in this way? Dr. Rewari explains that it’s high in antioxidants and unsaturated fats, both of which prevent and lower inflammation. This is noteworthy because high levels of inflammation can contribute to tumor formation and growth. 

Besides extra-virgin olive oil, Dr. Rewari says that he will sometimes cook with avocado oil, which has many of the same properties as olive oil. Both are high in antioxidants and unsaturated fats.

For a less expensive oil that is more neutral in taste than extra-virgin olive oil, Dr. Emanuel notes that canola oil is a great choice. “Canola oil has been wrongly demonized. It’s a very good oil,” he tells Parade. While it isn’t as high in antioxidants or unsaturated fats as extra-virgin olive oil, canola oil does still have both of these properties and has been associated with lower cholesterol and improved insulin sensitivity when consumed regularly. Research also shows that consuming canola oil regularly is associated with a lower risk of certain types of cancer when compared with consuming corn oil regularly.

The Cooking Method To Avoid

When asked which cooking oil they avoid using because of its impact on cancer risk, all three oncologists say that there isn’t a cooking oil that is associated with increased cancer risk, but there is an increased cancer risk for how certain oils are used—specifically, reheating oil during deep frying.

Dr. Emanuel says that this is why oils like canola oil and vegetable oil get a bad rap: It’s not the oil itself that’s harmful; it’s the cooking method they’re often used for. He explains that when food is deep-fried and oil is reheated, the heat changes the bond structure of the fats in the oil.

Dr. Deng agrees, explaining that this happens when any oil is reheated—even extra-virgin olive oil. “The process generates carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aldehydes and other lipid oxidation products,” he says.

Dr. Rewari explains it this way, “When oils are repeatedly heated to very high temperatures, they can produce oxidation products and other compounds that may contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress.” On top of that, he points out that the foods that are frequently deep-fried tend to be calorie-dense and are associated with obesity, which is itself a well-established risk factor for different types of cancer. “It is likely the overall dietary pattern and cooking method matter much more than any single oil,” he tells Parade.

To avoid the health risks that come with reheating oils and deep frying foods, all three oncologists say to stick to sauteing or baking foods instead of frying them. Or invest in an air fryer, which gives food a crispy texture and taste without using much oil.

Focusing on what you’re eating and how you cook it is a great step when it comes to cancer prevention. So is making extra-virgin olive oil your go-to in the kitchen.

Growing up as one of eighteen children in a highly public, plural family is bound to have its challenges, but for Sister Wives star Maddie Brown Brush, the reality was far more intense behind closed doors.

In a candid new revelation, the fan-favorite daughter of Janelle and Kody Brown took to Instagram to open up about the emotional toll of her upbringing. She described a childhood overshadowed by a dizzying cycle of "secrets and chaos."

Looking back on the turbulent dynamics of the family's early years, Maddie admitted she spent much of her youth quietly yearning for a basic sense of "stability and safety"—a heartbreaking confession that explains why she has chosen a different life for her four children with her husband, Caleb Brush.

She shared the following message in the caption of her social media post. "There are things my children will never be exposed to in our home, and I made that decision long before they were born. She shared a photo with the statement, "There is a list of things I decided my kids would never experience. I made it before they were born," written above it.

Brush continued, "I knew at 13 years old that I didn’t want the life I was living. I couldn’t change my circumstances then, but I could decide, with full certainty, what I would and wouldn’t carry forward."

She added, "No instability where there should be stability. No fear where there should be safety. No secrets where there should be honesty. No chaos disguised as normal. It takes a lot of intention to not repeat patterns."

The Sister Wives star concluded, "It’s not natural. It’s something I had to learn and something I have to keep choosing, especially on the hard days. But it ends with me. That part was decided a long time ago, and I’ve never once looked back on it."

The reality star has been very vocal about her tough upbringing among Kody and Janelle Brown, as well as Kody's wives Meri, Christine, and Robyn Brown. She didn't feel that she received the time and attention every child deserves from a parent.

She elaborated on her views on the podcast, The Authentic Society.

“I have no contact with some of my family, and it’s because of stuff that has happened,” she explained. “[Kody] doesn’t have any respect for boundaries, and you have to play by his rules, and I just don’t care to do that.”

Brush continued, “My dad would get very angry when I would — I’m a straight shooter, you ask me a question, I’m going to tell you what I think — and he would get very angry when I would be like, ‘I don’t know why you’re surprised here. And so that was one of the reasons that I went no contact because it was like, he didn’t like a mirror being held up.”

“There was a lot of anger, and he’d be like, ‘That’s not true!’ and I’m like, ‘It is true. I know this firsthand,’” Brush explained. “I always get messages from people who are like, ‘You should just forgive your dad and respect him.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t think you know what you’re talking about because your experience with your dad could be very different than my experience with my dad.’ Some people just don't deserve to be in your life,” she concluded.

Kody Brown has not publicly commented on Madison Brown Brush's Instagram post. Sister Wives is currently on hiatus.
