Creator of Groundbreaking MTV Show That Debuted Nirvana Has Died
For a generation of teenagers who taped music videos off their television sets, one late-night program on MTV became a lifeline to new music they couldn't get elsewhere. Dave Kendall, who created that program, 120 Minutes, and served as its defining early host, has died. Fellow host and longtime friend Matt Pinfield shared the news, calling Kendall "one of the true believers," a tribute that has since drawn grief from musicians and fans who found their favorite bands because of him.
Kendall was born in England and arrived in New York after leaving his studies at the London School of Economics to freelance as a music writer for outlets including Melody Maker and Spin. He later joined MTV, where he pitched a program dedicated to punk, post-punk, goth and synth-pop acts largely shut out of mainstream rock radio (including one of my personal favorites, The Sisters of Mercy). 120 Minutes debuted on March 10, 1986, and Kendall moved from producing into the host's chair in 1989, staying there through 1992.
The two-hour block became appointment viewing for anyone chasing music beyond the Top 40, introducing The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sonic Youth and the Pixies to a national audience years before those names defined an era. Kendall also took the show to England's Reading Festival for its first international edition and interviewed Sisters of Mercy frontman Andrew Eldritch in 1990. His most consequential broadcast came on Sept. 29, 1991, when he introduced the world premiere of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

"By far the most important thing about 120 Minutes was that it acted as a distribution channel for organic musical produce, if you will," Kendall said in a 2016 interview, recalling how few outlets existed for the music he championed outside of college radio. After leaving MTV in 1992, he kept working across television and radio, hosting Fox's Music Scoupe, producing for TechTV and Animal Planet, and later helming a First Wave program on SiriusXM. He eventually settled in Thailand, working as a correspondent and editor for the Bangkok Post while staying active in environmental causes.
Pinfield's tribute, paired with messages from fans who described recording the show on VHS and discovering bands like Slowdive, Lush and Mission UK through it, reflects how far Kendall's reach extended from a single overnight timeslot. No cause of death or age has been publicly confirmed, and his family has not released a statement.
For those of us who came of age with limited access to music outside mainstream radio and MTV's daytime rotation, we owe a debt of gratitude to Kendall and his razor-sharp curation of 120 Minutes.

In a rare red carpet appearance back in 2024 at the premiere of The Good Half, it was made clear that she's only gotten more beautiful with age. With her long blonde tresses cascading down her shoulders, it’s safe to say she hasn’t changed since her days romping through Chicago’s South Side in that iconic film.
Signing on to Cobra KaiWhen it came to signing on to bring back her Karate Kid role on Cobra Kai, Shue spoke on a panel discussion at MegaCon Orlando last February and admitted she was “a little worried” about reprising her role of Ali Mills Schwarber, PEOPLE reported.
Despite her hesitations, Shue shared that she was “very honored to be included in the Cobra Kai family.”
While she wasn’t sure that it would “ever happen,” Shue said that she was pleased that she was asked back.
“Actually, I was a little worried about going on the show at first because I didn’t like the way my character had been written out of Karate Kid2,” she noted, reflecting on the 1986 sequel to the iconic 1984 film. Shue did not appear in the 1986 sequel.
“It’s all about the vindication of Ali,” she said. “We needed that. Without Ali, there is no Karate Kid. There is no Cobra.”

The 2023 novel has climbed to No. 1 on Amazon's "Popular" books list and also sits at No. 10 on the Amazon Charts for Most Sold books this week, where it has now spent eight weeks. The renewed interest comes just days after Peacock premiered its eight-episode adaptation starringJennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny, Gemma Chan and D'Arcy Carden on July 9.
Often called the "queen of beach reads," Hilderbrand has become one of the most successful authors of contemporary summer fiction, with many of her Nantucket-set novels becoming annual bestsellers. The Spanish tortilla is a hill locals will gladly die on.
In 1932, a traveling salesman named Herman Lay started peddling bags of potato chips out of the trunk of his Ford Model A. After nearly a century, which saw the brand provide the storied chip to their customers in colorful bags, his corporate descendants have crossed the Atlantic to commit what can only be described as culinary blasphemy.
Step into any traditional tavern in Madrid and you will hear patrons arguing over the correct state of the egg. Should it be runny (jugosa) or firm? Onion (con cebolla) or no onion? It is a culinary religion, which makes PepsiCo’s new venture on Calle de Fuencarral feel less like a restaurant launch and more like a brand taking a bold, controversial side.

The concept sounds like a late-night college mashup: a small, retro-modern eatery where the kitchen doesn’t peel potatoes, choosing instead to hydrate Lay's potato chips in beaten egg before tossing them into the frying pan. I walked in ready to try it all, doing my part for science. I am, after all, a giver at heart.

I left the restaurant wondering if we’ve been treating the humble potato chip like an afterthought for the last century.
It shouldn't work. When you soak crispy, salted potato chips in egg, they should theoretically turn into a soggy, mushy dough. Surprisingly, they don’t. Instead, they expand, absorbing the moisture while keeping a deeply savory flavor profile that raw potatoes, which are notoriously difficult to salt evenly, can’t match.

It is a tasty slice where the sweetness of the slow-cooked onions cuts directly through the rich, shredded pork. If you want something brighter, the honey and tomato version delivers a sweet, acidic contrast that takes the egg-and-oil base to another level. Then there is the bacon tortilla, a smoky, salty punch of pure comfort food.
To drink, I skipped the beer and started my meal with a cold glass of tart gazpacho. The sharp, chilled tomato broth acts as the perfect appetizer, prepping the palate for the hearty egg-and-oil mixture to follow.
Beyond the TortillaThe menu was created in consultation with Michelin-starred chef Miguel Carretero, and he refuses to let the potato chips rest in the kitchen.
The Mussels: Steamed mussels are served directly over a bed of Lay’s. The hot, briny ocean juice pools at the bottom of the plate, softening the chips into a rich, sea-salted mash. I found myself holding my fork like a spear, ready to jab anyone’s fingers who happened to wander too close to my platter.
The Anchovies: A plate of sharp, vinegar-cured white anchovies and olives draped over chips offers a cleaner, sharper bite, though it functions more as a what my daughter and I refer to as a little "snackeroni and cheese" —without the cheese— before the main event.
Because we were there to do thorough research, we also squeezed in orders of the crispy chicken bites and ham croquettes, you know, purely for journalistic integrity.

My husband and daughter immediately claimed the sticky, sweet dulce de leche bowl. I fought them for the goat milk version. The earthy, slightly sour tang of the goat's milk paired with the salty crunch of the chips is a delicious way to end such a savory meal.

Perhaps 2026 is the perfect time to start treating it as a main ingredient. Next time I'm in Madrid, I'll pop over for a tortilla. I'll do my best not to jab anyone with a fork.

One of the biggest highlights of the Zuiderdam’s upcoming dry dock is a total overhaul and expansion of its staterooms. The cruise line is introducing several new high-end and specialty cabin categories designed for the way people travel today. Here's exactly what’s being added to the ship’s layout:
- Two Brand-New "Bridgeview" Suites: Perched directly above the bridge, these exclusive suites offer sweeping, forward-facing, 180-degree views of the ocean. They feature dramatic wraparound windows, private balconies, and completely separate living and sleeping spaces designed to maximize natural light.
- 32 Solo Verandah Staterooms: Recognizing the massive boom in solo travel, Holland America is adding purpose-built cabins designed specifically for single travelers—complete with their own private balconies so solo cruisers don't have to compromise on outdoor space.
- 14 Vista Suites: A major guest-favorite category brought over from the line's newer Pinnacle Class ships, these spacious, light-filled rooms feature oversized windows, cozy sitting areas, and private verandahs.
- A Reimagined Pinnacle Suite: The absolute grandest room on the ship is getting a complete redesign. Expect an elevated, residential-style layout with high-end finishes, generous living areas, and panoramic ocean views. According to Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, the additions are a direct response to what cruisers have been asking for: “We’ve seen strong interest in our Bridgeview Suites and Solo Verandahs on Oosterdam, and we’re excited to make these new accommodations available on Zuiderdam,” said Bodensteiner. “We’re building on that momentum and look forward to sharing more details, including itineraries, very soon.”
Accommodations aren't the only thing getting an upgrade. Fans of the cruise line's signature Dutch heritage are in for a major treat: the Zuiderdam is officially adding the Grand Dutch Café.
Previously exclusive to the line's newest Pinnacle Class ships, this European-style venue is designed to feel like a cozy, neighborhood cafe in the heart of Amsterdam. It functions as an approachable, all-day social hub where guests can grab a morning espresso, drop in for an afternoon craft beer or aperitif, or enjoy a light European bite in the evening.
Even better? The Grand Dutch Café aboard the Zuiderdam is slated to be the largest one introduced in the entire Evolution program so far, meaning plenty of room to sit back, relax, and savor the journey.

Dolly Parton's 1978 Hit, Considered a Timeless Breakup Anthem, Actually Has Nothing to Do With Heartache
There is no one on earth who is more beloved than Dolly Parton. The woman has an impeccable reputation, does her best to give back to charity, and on top of all of it, is one of the most prolific singers and songwriters of our time. Parton's sky-high blonde hair and big... personality dominated a lot of the conversations around her stardom, but in reality, her musical and lyrical talent are far more far-reaching than a lot of folks realize.
Like most country singers, Parton's songs often set a scene and tell a story. It is no wonder that they have endured the test of time and been the subject of many debates. However, most people were pretty convinced they knew what her tune "Two Doors Down" was all about, as she set the scene pretty clearly: A woman is alone in her room, upset presumably over a heartache, and she hears a party just "two doors down," and decides she's going to go have a good time anyway.

The Unexpected Story Behind 'Two Doors Down'The real story behind the song was not a lover that scorned Parton, but rather a misunderstanding with her band and a dinner.
In 2022, Parton appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show where Clarkson asked her if it was true that "Two Doors Down" was actually written about fried clams. And surprisingly, Parton confirmed it... sort of.
Parton explained that she was on tour and suffering through a liquid diet to manage her weight.
"So you try everything to lose weight, and I had got on some kinda crazy old diet, like a liquid protein, you just drink an ounce of something, ground up horse hooves or something. I don’t know, or monkey pee or something, I don’t know what it was," Parton quipped. "You’re supposed to drink it like three times a day, and it was so ungodly you just had to close the back of your throat off so you don’t smell.”
So while she was depriving herself, her band was having dinner at the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge, which they stayed at regularly while touring. Evidently, they were known for their fried clams and the whole group always looked forward to them, but because of Parton's diet, she couldn't participate. They were literally two doors down from her, and their laughter and banter (and her depressed mood) inspired the lyrics.
“I was just in there feeling sorry for myself ‘cuz they were eating fried clams and I wasn’t. And it was two doors down, I was staying two doors down from the rest of them. Seriously.”
Maybe our story title isn't fair... it technically is about heartbreak. It's just heartbreak over food, which just really reinforces what a relatable queen Miss Dolly Parton is.
1973 Farewell Show, Famous for a Smashed Guitar and Angry Crowd, Shattered a Legendary '50s Duo's Career
Long before Phil and Don Everly stepped onto the stage at Knott’s Berry Farm in 1973, years of quiet resentment had already begun to chip away at the Everly Brothers' legendary vocal harmony and family ties.
What was supposed to be a farewell performance ahead of a long-deserved break quickly spiraled into one of the most infamous disasters in rock history. It ended in smashed guitars, a chorus of audience boos, and a sudden, heartbreaking split.
On July 14, 1973, the Everlys were ready for a hiatus. American Songwriter reported that the twosome had already performed the evening before with no drama. However, their second show would be named by Rolling Stone as one of the messiest public band breakups in history.
The duo had been touring and recording consistently since 1957, when they first achieved country and pop stardom with the song "Bye Bye Love." A string of hits followed, including "Cathy's Clown," "Bird Dog," "Let It Be Me," and "When Will I Be Loved." They placed a total of 31 songs on the Billboard Top 100 throughout their career.

By 1973, they had been on a whirlwind for 16 years and needed a rest. Personal and professional issues came to a head on stage in front of an audience at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.
“What we needed was to take a long vacation,” Phil Everly told Rolling Stone. “There were too many people making too much money off us, keeping us going. We should have taken a long rest. But in those days, we couldn’t.”
He added, "The tensions between Don and I … well, we’re just a family that is like that, I guess. Everything that was happening then contributed to it. But you could just as easily say that the tension between us existed from day one, from birth. And will go on forever."
This long-simmering drama spilled over into an infamous on-stage brawl between the brothers. Rolling Stone spoke to Don, who explained, "I was half in the bag that evening — the only time I’ve ever been drunk onstage in my life. I knew it was the last night, and on the way out I drank some tequila, drank some champagne — started celebrating the demise. It was really a funeral.”
He added, "It’s funny, the press hadn’t paid any attention to us in ten years, but they jumped on that. It was one of the saddest days of my life.
In turn, Phil became so upset that his brother was inebriated that he smashed a guitar and stormed off stage. He told the outlet, "It was silly, you know? But Donald had decided. It was a dark day."
This public breakup led to a personal split for the brothers, who didn't see one another for a decade, except for their father's funeral. Phil and Don reunited in September 1983 during a concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall,, which was recorded for a live LP.
In 1984, they recorded the album EB 84, twelve years after their last studio effort, Chicken & Listen, in 1972. After a final reunion in 2000, the brothers once again became estranged, according to American Songwriter.
Phil Everly died in 2014. Don passed seven years later, in 2021.
Huey Lewis Was Booed Every Night on Tour With '70s Rock Band—So He Came Up With a Brilliant Trick
Huey Lewis has nothing but love for the Doobie Brothers. In a post shared to the official Huey Lewis and the News Facebook page, the singer, 76, recalled his early days as an opening act for the ‘70s rock legends—and how they supported him through some tough times.
“When we first opened for the Doobie Brothers, we got booed,” Lewis was quoted as saying in the post. “Our first show, I think we had like 10 or 11 songs. As soon as a song would end, the boos would start. We learned to launch right into the next song immediately, so we didn't give the crowd a chance to boo.”
“After that first show, we were despondent, “Lewis continued. “It was a tough reaction. I said, ‘Man, that's terrible.’ The Doobie Brothers said, "Are you kidding? You did a lot better than (the previous opening band). They didn't even get through the whole set. I was like, ‘Okay, well, at least we got all 10 songs in.’ We must have done 30 dates with them, and we were booed every single night.”

The Doobie Brothers knew Huey Lewis and his band had something special. In an interview posted on Huey Lewis’ YouTube page, Doobie Brothers guitarist Patrick Simmons looked back on his band’s early support of the newcomers.
“I think it was just obvious how great a band they were,” he recalled. “You didn't have to be, you know, they didn't have to have any hit records for us to know that they were super talented musicians and, you know, they had great songs. That first record, I don't know if they even had a hit off that very first record, but we knew they were a great band. just you know it was there easy to see.”
“But I gotta say, I don't think he was, they weren't booed every night,” Simmons laughed.
Huey Lewis and the News’ first major trek on the road was opening for The Doobie Brothers' One Step Closer to Home Tour in 1980.
In a 2003 interview published by Pop Culture Classics, Lewis recalled being invited by Doobie Brothers guitarist John McFee to open for the band after previously working with him.
“McFee and I were in a band called Clover before that, and they were nice enough to give us the opening slot on their tour,” Lewis shared. “We were fortunate. They were so great to us. It really could have been ugly.”
Lewis then revealed that he quickly figured out how to avoid getting booed off stage.
“We thought we were doing good, when we got through 10 songs without anybody booing us off the stage,” he said. “The word was that The Fabulous Thunderbirds had opened their last tour and they hadn’t made it through their whole set. So our objective was to actually make it through all 10 songs. We learned how to go from song to song with no dead time, because dead time was where the boos would start.“
By the mid-1980s, Huey Lewis and the News became stars in their own right. Their 1983 album Sports featured several MTV-ready hits, and in 1985 their song "The Power of Love” was featured in the blockbuster movie Back to the Future.

The short answer is dimension. "Brown creates definition without stark contrast, and most importantly, it brings warmth to the eyes and face," Paulina tells Parade. "Most of the time I'm applying it, it still looks as dark as black, but it gives so much more dimension, enhancing your skin and eye color and helping the rest of the makeup shine through without being too overpowering."
Eldridge connects it to a broader shift in how people are approaching makeup right now.
"After loads of big lash and very heavy lash looks, people are turning more towards minimal eye makeup looks," she explains. "Brown mascara is a great way of achieving this, while keeping a bit of definition."
It comes down to contrast and intention. Black mascara creates a bold, graphic effect where lashes stand out immediately against the skin. Brown mascara softens that contrast, blending more seamlessly with the face and creating what Eldridge describes as enhancement without obviously looking like you're wearing mascara.
"It does it in a softer, more understated way," she says. "It feels a little more effortless."
"Black makes lashes look darker and more intense if you're looking for maximum impact," Paulina explains, while brown "creates a natural warmth to the lashes and helps them appear fuller."
And Pollara adds, "Black mascara is often my choice for a full glam look, while brown mascara is my go-to for everyday."

Who Does Brown Mascara Look Best On?Everyone, technically—but some people get a more transformative result than others. Pollara finds brown mascara especially flattering on fair to medium skin tones, and on blondes, redheads and anyone with lighter eyes, where the softened contrast feels more in harmony with the overall coloring.
Eldridge points out that reddish-brown shades can bring out blue in eye color specifically.
And Paulina makes the case for mature skin clients in particular. "The softer contrast is more flattering than anything harsh," she says.

Start with curled lashes—all three experts mention this without prompting, and Eldridge specifically never applies mascara without first reaching for her Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. From there, one to two light coats applied root to tip is all you need for a natural effect.
"Concentrate most of the product at the base of the lashes and lightly comb through the ends to avoid clumping," Pollara says. For an even softer finish, she suggests skipping the bottom lashes entirely or applying just a touch to the outer corners.
Eldridge's tip for the natural look is equally simple: "Go from root to tip to separate and elongate."
Absolutely, and the technique is where it gets interesting. For drama, Eldridge's approach diverges from her natural-look method: "Get right down to the roots and hold there and just massage very slowly at the roots for as long as you can, back and forward," she instructs. "Eventually, lightly zigzag out to the tip."
She also loves pairing brown mascara with dramatic colored eyeshadows, calling out her own Betty Eyeshadow Palette as a combination she returns to because it keeps the fun of color "set in a softer way."

Marky Ramone, who is best known for his long stint as a drummer with the Ramones, is celebrating his 74th birthday on Wednesday.
Named Marc Steven Bell, but best known as Marky Ramone, he and his twin brother Fred were born in a hospital in Brooklyn. Raised in New York City, he started playing for punk bands in the city during the 1970s, including Dust and Estus. He jumped through various rock groups and helped them record their albums before joining the Ramones in 1978, eventually becoming the band's longest-serving drummer.

"There was a lot of heavy competition out there. Not so much from the punk bands. I considered the Ramones the originators of punk, so in that sense there was no one to compete with," Bell wrote in his Medium blog in 2016. "But the Ramones were a punk rock band with the emphasis on rock. In rock, there were a lot of big boys with heavy drums: AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, and Van Halen. Van Halen were the new kids on the block, and someone the Ramones might not even have considered. Yet their self-titled album had just come out and it was worth considering."

Lizzo Gets Candid About Her Recent 20-Pound Weight Gain
Lizzo is opening up about how she recently gained 20 pounds.
The beloved "Truth Hurts" hip-hop icon, 38, has been quite candid about her weight loss journey in recent years. But as anyone working toward their health knows, the journey isn't always linear. In a new interview, the music star revealed that she actually gained 20 pounds over the last year after hitting her goal weight in January 2025.
"I've gained 20 pounds since last year," Lizzo explained to The Guardian. "So everyone can ask me about weight gain, too, if they'd like."
She continued, explaining that her initial pursuit of weight loss was to better her health.
"There are a lot of reasons," she noted when asked why she chose to start a weight loss journey years ago. "People always want to make it one single headline, one single thing. A lot of things can be true at once."
"I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches," she shared. "I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts. So I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle. My routines and habits."
While many assumed her initial weight loss was with a drug like Ozempic, Lizzo wanted to make it clear that's not true.
“No!” she responded when asked by the publication.

What is Lizzo’s Health Plan?Lizzo previously told podcaster Trisha Paytas that keeping her diet in check is essential.
“What did it for me was— actually, it was not being vegan,” Lizzo shared during a June 19 episode of the Just Trish podcast. “Because when I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats. I was eating a lot of bread. I was eating a lot of rice, and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full. But really I was consuming like 3,000 to 5,000 calories a day.”
Lizzo praised whole foods and eating beef, chicken, and fish. She told Today that she cut out sugary coffee drinks, full-fat sodas, and potato chips. She also limits alcohol.
As for workouts, Lizzo shared that she trains three times a week. She also does cardio and daily saunas.
“I play pickleball and hike and walk on the beach and move my body and dance and drink water. I detox! Once a month! I also get holistic body work done, wood therapy, and lymphatic massage,” she noted.
While weight loss is always challenging, Lizzo seems to have found peace with her food issues. She told Women’s Health last July that she’s discovered “a beautiful balance” with how food co-exists with her everyday life, a sharp contrast to her past struggles with overeating.
“It’s a beautiful balance where it’s like, if you allow yourself to have something, you can enjoy it without overindulging and hurting yourself,” she said. “I’m so proud of myself for overcoming that.”

Bass added, "contestants will be tested at every measure," and "nerves will be shaken and emotions will be stirred."

Timothy Olyphant is currently starring in Alien: Earth, but back in 2023, he returned as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in the Justified spinoff, Justified: City Primeval—and he brought along his 23-year-old daughter, Vivian Olyphant, for the ride.
The original series, which ran for six seasons, ended with Givens relocating back to Miami to be closer to his young child and ex-wife, Winona (Natalie Zea). The spinoff picks up a decade later.

During a guest appearance on The Ellen Show, Olyphant recalled his initial reaction to his wife telling him she was pregnant with their third child, Vivian, who was born in 2003.
“I remember when she said we were having a third. I said, ‘I remember talking about it, but I didn’t know we had committed,’” he joked, adding that he’s since “gotten used” to his trio of offspring. “I mean, it’s pretty clear to me at this point we are keeping them."

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody alum, 33, and pregnant Victoria's Secret model, 32, revealed the sex of their first child on Sprouse's new podcast, Wildmen, just two months after announcing they were expanding their family.
"We are having a baby girl, which I'm very excited about," Sprouse said on the Tuesday, July 14, episode of his podcast. "We've been calling her principessa, which I don't know why that's been our like—it's Italian for princess."
"I'm excited to be a girl dad, actually," the Disney Channel alum added, before joking, "I just also unironically love a tea party."
While the couple, who tied the knot in 2023, is still going "back and forth" on names for their little girl, Palvin said she hoped the new addition to their family would "mellow" her husband out.
Sprouse and Palvin first announced that they were going to be parents back in May, debuting the supermodel's baby bump at the 79th Annual Cannes Film Festival.
And while Palvin can't wait to welcome her little one, she admitted on Tuesday's podcast that her pregnancy has been a little less than magical.
"Sometimes I feel guilty because I'm not enjoying pregnancy as much as a lot of women out there," she shared. "I know it's a gift. It's hard to breathe."
Palvin said she's also been struggling with back pain, sleep issues, and a change in her appetite as she is now in her third trimester.
"I do feel similarities from the first trimester cuz my hunger is getting crazy," she explained. "If I don't eat, I'm nauseous. I have a lot of stomach acid." The mom-to-be added, "I should be eating more protein. That was my mistake the first trimester, too, that I wasn't eating."
