Dominique Dawes entered the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta as one of the gymnasts favored to contend for multiple medals. Already a veteran of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Dawes entered the Atlanta Games with high expectations. She competed in all four women’s artistic gymnastics events—vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise—as a key member of the U.S. team, which also included Shannon Miller, Kerri Strug,Amy Chow, Amanda Borden, Dominique Moceanu, and Jaycie Phelps.

While the Magnificent Seven's team gold remains one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history, Dominique Dawes also made history individually in Atlanta.

After qualifying for the women’s floor exercise final, Dawes delivered one of the finest routines of her career. She combined explosive tumbling, expressive choreography, and undeniable confidence to earn the bronze medal, finishing behind Ukraine's Lilia Podkopayeva and Romania's Simona Amânar.

That bronze medal was historic, making Dawes the first Black woman ever to win an individual Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics.

Billy Joel has written plenty of unforgettable songs over the years, from chart-topping hits like "My Life" and "Big Shot" to enduring ballads such as "Honesty." But tucked away on his Grammy-winning 1978 album 52nd Street is one of the most personal songs of his career, one that many casual fans have likely never heard.

Although "Rosalinda's Eyes" was never released as a single, it has quietly become a favorite among devoted listeners thanks to the heartfelt story behind it. 52nd Street became Joel's first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 and went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making "Rosalinda's Eyes" part of one of the biggest records of his career.

The song's title wasn't fictional. Joel later revealed that "Rosalinda's Eyes" was inspired by his mother Rosalind Nyman Joel, who raised him largely on her own after divorcing his father Howard Joel in the late 1950s. She worked clerical jobs on Long Island while supporting Billy's musical ambitions, remaining one of his earliest and most steadfast believers. In 1986, Joel established the Rosalind Joel Scholarship for the Performing Arts at City College in New York.

That connection makes the lyrics especially poignant. The song follows a struggling musician trying to build a career while finding reassurance in Rosalinda's unwavering faith. Joel sings that work may be difficult to find, but "Rosalinda understands," later adding that she knows how talented he is even when few others do. Those lines take on an even deeper meaning knowing they were inspired by the woman who encouraged him long before he became one of the world's biggest recording artists.

Despite appearing on an album loaded with radio staples, "Rosalinda's Eyes" has remained one of Joel's overlooked compositions. In 2013, Tablet Magazine highlighted it as an underappreciated deep cut, noting that it sounds unlike the Billy Joel songs most listeners know and describing it as one of the hidden gems buried on the second side of 52nd Street. The publication also pointed to its story of an ambitious young musician sustained by the woman who believes in him, a reading that becomes even more meaningful given the song's real-life inspiration.

"Despite being New York-themed, ['Rosalinda's Eyes' is] the spiritual opposite of the standard Billy Joel tunes you’re accustomed to hearing blasted at baseball games and tristate relief concerts," wrote the magazine.

The album itself has continued to earn praise decades later. Reviewing 52nd Street, AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it a testament to Joel's growth as both a songwriter and performer, praising its more sophisticated, jazz-infused sound while arguing that it contains "no weak songs." And Rolling Stone included it on its first ranking of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, calling it "a leaner, rock-oriented follow-up" to Joel's 1977 album The Stranger.

Even though hits like "My Life" and "Big Shot" have long dominated classic rock radio, "Rosalinda's Eyes" remains a rewarding discovery for fans willing to dig a little deeper into one of Joel's finest albums.

Voivod, the progressive/thrash metal pioneers, are not just bringing high-intensity music to their upcoming U.S. tour but also adding more excitement through a special guest.

Currently on tour across Europe and soon heading to North America, the influential Canadian band announced they would be joined by the metal-punk trio BAT on select dates.

Composed of Ryan Waste, Nick Poulos and Chris Marshall, the band will join Voivod as special guests on select dates.

“Ten nights, ten cities, from the Rust Belt to the Deep South. Bring your own dimension,” the caption reads.

The announcement sparked anticipation as fans couldn't wait to see the two bands perform live.

“Hell yeah! We have been waiting for this!” one wrote.

“VOIBAT” a commenter remarked, mixing the two bands’ names.

“What a stacked tour! Wow!” an Instagram user said.

“That lineup mixing Voivod with this caliber of bands shows the respect you've earned in the scene over decades,” a fan added.

As Voivod mentioned, the U.S. tour will feature a 10-date run that kicks off in Ohio on Oct. 8, followed by performances in major cities across New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and more before concluding in Newport, Kentucky on Oct. 18.

Epicure, the '90s band that emerged at the height of Australia's alt-rock scene, is once again stealing the spotlight with an upcoming tour.

Despite disbanding in 2010, the trio composed of Juan Alban, Tim Bignell and Dom Santamaria made a major comeback this year with back-to-back announcements.

After sharing a sneak peek at their soon-to-be-released album Evenings In Honduras with its lead single, "Is There Any Way Out Now?" the alt-rock band is finally making its long-awaited return to the stage with a string of shows in August and October.

In an Instagram update, Epicure announced its first national tour in 16 years.

The seven-date run kicks off on Aug. 29 in Ballarat, Victoria to celebrate the release of its new album, marking the band's first full-length release in almost twenty years.

Fans in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle and Melbourne will witness the band's first live performances before the tour concludes in Torquay on Oct. 30.

Epicure will also be joined by its "good friends" and longtime collaborators Dave Manton and Steven Clifford Veale.

The band also hinted that more support bands will be revealed soon.

"We CANNOT wait to see our old friends around the country. We know times are tough, but if you have the capacity please jump on these tix early. It would mean the world to us," the Instagram caption reads.

Formed in 1996, Epicure's original lineup consisted of Juan Alban on lead vocals, Michael "Brownie" Brown and Luke Cairnes on guitar, Tim Bignell on bass and Dom Santamaria on drums.

Returning after a 16-year absence, the band will perform as a three-piece power trio. 

Alban mentioned in a recent interview with The Music the journey the band went through during its comeback.

"I think it took several months to convince them to reform, but as we worked up the new songs the results were pretty undeniable," he said, adding "The old chemistry was there and we had some strong material. And as always, once Dom and Tim were in, we had a band again. I tried to really just enjoy their company this time around and not put too much pressure on things.”

The vocalist, who also said he felt "fortunate" to be reuniting with his bandmates after a lengthy hiatus, described their relationship as being "more like brothers than bandmates."

As for their highly-anticipated album and tour, the band said they're excited to get back on the road and see familiar faces.

"We're so looking forward to getting around the country and seeing some old friends, and celebrating the Epicure back catalogue with the fans who gave the band and our songs life,” Alban said, while also hinting at a possible follow-up album.

A story about a suburban mom named Debbie who 'just hit the wall' opens one of 2004’s biggest pop-rock hits, a song all about longing for your glory days.

Back in the summer of 2004, Bowling for Soup gave listeners the instant pop-rock classic "1985" that poked gentle fun at suburban life, and a nostalgia for the '80s. You might not remember the title right off the bat, but the second that unforgettable chorus kicks in, "she's still preoccupied with 1985," every lyric comes flooding back.

"1985" tells the relatable story of Debbie, a suburban mom in her 30s who feels stuck in the monotony of modern adult life. She has a minivan, a mortgage, and a husband who works all day.

Frustrated, she looks back longingly on 1985 as the peak of music and culture, reminiscing about big dreams, rock stars like Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Wham!, U2, Blondie, and Madonna, and a time before reality TV.

Although Bowling for Soup took the song to its Billboard Top 100 peak position of No. 23, they weren't the first to record "1985." The song was originally written by SR-71's Mitch Allan and John Allen for their 2004 album Here We Go Again.

A few months after they released the track, SR-71 gave the song to Bowling for Soup, feeling it would be a better fit for their sound. Bowling for Soup's Jaret Reddick told Songfacts how the track switched bands, and the song ultimately became a pop-rock classic.

Reddick explained, "Mitch Allan from SR-71, he's like, 'Dude, I've got this song. It's a freakin' hit for you guys. It sounds like you.' And evidently, that whole conversation happened because Mitch was pitching his band to Jonathan Daniel, to get the record they had put out in Japan released here in the United States. And JD said, 'Dude, that sounds like a Bowling for Soup song.' And Mitch said, 'You know what? You're right.'"

Allan told Billboard, "[Reddick] took this sad woman who we were making fun of and turned her into the hero of the story. She’s suddenly celebrating that she got to live in 1985 and that we, the listener, didn’t. Life was so much better then, and she got to experience it."

Bowling for Soup's band members Reddick, Gary Wiseman, Rob Felicetti, and Chris Burney found themselves thrust into the media spotlight due to the song's popularity. Their LP, A Hangover You Don’t Deserve, reached No. 37 on the Billboard 200, reported Billboard.

Reddick added, "Right from the first two chords, [fans] know what it is. Every phone comes up during that song. People still laugh at ‘When did Mötley Crüe become classic rock?’”

Music superstar Bad Bunny has hit yet another new career milestone with his latest Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour.

And his continued dominance means he has now extended his own record, earning another No. 1 on Billboard’s monthly Top Tours chart.

As the outlet reported, the feat marks the second time this year that the "NUEVAYoL" singer topped the chart, a third time while on this specific tour, and a "record-extending 10th time since the ranking launched in 2019."

The Puerto Rican chart-topper previously topped Billboard’s Top Tours chart with 2022’s El Último Tour del Mundo and 2024’s The Most Wanted Tour, before extending his record with his latest victory.

"With 10 months at No. 1, Bad Bunny extends his record for the most monthly victories among all artists since the chart’s Feb. 2019 launch," the outlet noted, adding that he joins the ranks of Beyoncé, Coldplay, and Elton John, who trail behind with seven each.

There's no stopping Bad Bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, even as he officially wrapped up the tour in Brussels on July 22.

The European leg of the tour had many historic moments, kicking off with a pair of sold-out shows in Barcelona, Spain, on May 22 and 23. Rolling Stone noted that it was "a doubly momentous night as it marked the Puerto Rican star’s first concert performance in Europe since 2019’s X 100pre tour."

The 32-year-old entertainer performed 55 shows globally. In just 4 months, he hit the stage in 22 cities across four continents, including 28 shows across Europe and the UK, marking many firsts for a Latin artist.

His two nights in England set the record for the “most tickets sold for a Latin act in British history,” while his four nights in France made him the “first Latin act to sell out multiple stadiums in France.” He also set attendance records in Sweden as the “Latin act with the most tickets sold in Swedish history,” and became the first Latin act to sell out a stadium in Poland and Italy, as reported by Pollstar.

Billboard Boxscore reports Bad Bunny grossed $123.1 million and sold over 773,000 tickets for 14 shows in June, which is just shy of his own record at $123.7 million take in Sep. 2022 for the World’s Hottest Tour.

The feat, however, puts him in a league with only one other artist—Beyoncé—as he becomes the second artist to gross a "reported $100 million in two separate calendar months." Queen Bey has done it six times.

He also set a career best for monthly attendance, Billboard noted, "surpassing Sept. 22’s 501,000 by 55%," pointing out that it was due to geography, as the previous record was for shows in the U.S., where ticket prices were higher. In Europe, the tickets tend to cost less than in massive markets like New York or Los Angeles, but the stadiums overseas are larger with higher seating capacity.

The preliminary numbers have already pushed his career gross past the $1 billion mark in touring, making him the first Latin artist in history to reach the milestone.

You've been taking care of your precious hydrangeas for months, making sure to give them just the right amount of water, sunshine and TLC. But all of a sudden, you peek into your garden and notice some of your hydrangeas are wilting. What gives?

Hydrangeas starting to droop or dry out in the summer is actually pretty common—but it doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong. In most cases, hydrangeas wilting is simply a matter of the elements.

To better understand what exactly causes hydrangeas to wilt, Parade consulted with two experts: Lorraine Ballato a horticulturist, hydrangea expert, blogger and the author of the books Success With Hydrangeas and Hydrangea Pruning; and Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, a gardener, gardening coach and the writer behind the blog Hoosier Gardener.

And fortunately, according to both experts, it's pretty easy to reverse a wilting hydrangea plant—you just need to make a few small adjustments.

Why Your Hydrangeas Are Wilting Even Though You're Watering Them, According to 2 Gardeners

According to both Ballato and Sharp, your hydrangeas are most likely wilting due to the hot afternoon sun, heat stress or overwatering.

How Afternoon Sun and Heat Stress Cause Hydrangeas to Wilt

When it comes to excessive sun exposure, "wilting is a plant’s defense mechanism," Sharp tells Parade. "By moving its leaves downward, the plant reduces ... exposure to the sun. Plants, including hydrangeas, will also do this during heat stress."

Furthermore, Ballato explains that hydrangea's leaves are filled with tiny plant pores called stomata, which "readily give up moisture when in direct sun." This issue can cause a hydrangea to wilt (and is most prevalent in big-leaf varieties of hydrangeas, such as Hydrangea macrophylla, as they have more stomata.)

"This is common, and the plant isn't in danger as long as the surrounding soil has enough moisture," says Ballato.

Overwatering Hydrangeas Can Also Cause Wilting

"Hydrangeas may flatten their leaves even if they’ve been watered," says Sharp. "And when that happens gardeners run the risk of drowning their plants if they keep watering. Too much water can cause root rot and plant death."

That said, it's also important that the soil has enough moisture. Ballato notes that if a hydrangea plant's soil isn't moist enough, the plant may "sweat," even in shady gardens. Basically, watering your hydrangeas just the right amount is ideal (more on that, below).

How to Save Hydrangea Plants That Are Wilting

If your plant's leaves appear crispy and curled, "that’s a tell-tale sign your hydrangea lacks water and is suffering heat stress and too much sun," says Sharp. Another way to check the health of your plants is to inspect them at night, after the sun goes down and the weather is a bit cooler. "If the leaves fill out on the plant, it has enough moisture in the soil," she says. If not, it needs more moisture.

To get started saving a wilting plant, Sharp advises that you "start the plant's recovery by deeply watering the plant."

For larger hydrangea plants, steadily water the base of the plant for about an hour with a small stream from the hose; for smaller plants, do the same thing but for just a half hour, she says.

"If your plant wilts and doesn't recover after the sun is off it, you need to amend the soil to make it moisture-retentive," advises Ballato. There are a few ways to do this. First, stick your finger in the soil to see how much of the soil is damp. Ideally, the dampness should reach around your second knuckle.

"If the dampness is not at the second knuckle, the plant will suffer," according to Ballato. In this case, she advises adding some compost or increasing the mulch layer.

In more extreme cases, you may need to relocate your plant to a cooler spot in the garden—but Ballato says you should wait to do this until later in the season, when the weather isn't quite so hot.

No matter what, don't give up on your flowers. "Hydrangeas have an amazing ability to rehydrate once the sun is off them," encourages Ballato.

How to Prevent Hydrangea Plants From Wilting in the First Place

"You can prevent wilting by keeping the plant out of the direct sun," says Ballato, adding that "it can do quite well in dappled light."

"To keep your hydrangea from wilting, make sure it’s [planted] in the right place," Sharp explains. "Some hydrangeas do better in shade or part sun rather than full sun."

She also recommends mulching your hydrangea plants with shredded bark, which "helps keep the soil cool and moist." Avoid gravel mulch, as this can retain heat and reflect that heat onto your plants.

There Are a Few Less Common Reasons Your Hydrangeas May Be Wilting

"If you determine your hydrangea’s wilting is not water, sun or heat stress related, check out the soil," advises Sharp.

There's always a chance that critters such as moles, mice or voles inhabit your garden, and they could be "disrupting" your flowers. "If the plant is planted along the run of these animals, consider moving the hydrangea," she says.

Additionally, "sandy soil that drains quickly" could also cause hydrangeas to wilt, per Sharp. If your soil is sandy, it could help to add compost or more soil to the planting hole, as this may "give water and roots something to hold on to."

Sammy Hagar didn't wait long to respond after learning that David Lee Roth had canceled the remaining dates of his 2026 tour. Just before 11 p.m. on July 23, Hagar posted a raw, unedited video message on Facebook addressed directly to his old bandmate.

Hagar opened by explaining he'd just heard from Michael Anthony, the bassist who played alongside both men in Van Halen, and said he wanted Roth to know his reaction was coming straight from the heart. He told Roth he hoped there wasn't a physical problem behind the cancellations, then turned emotional, saying "you go, brother, Mike and I support you," adding "Mike and I love the fact that you've been out there doing it, supporting the greatest band in the world that we were both part of."

Then he inviting Roth to come sing a song or two, or even emcee, at his upcoming Las Vegas residency.

The caption on Hagar's post showed how immediate his reaction was: "i'm looking rough, but who cares I'm serious with this post. I hope the news about Dave is not AI!!!!! if it is, my post is still coming from my heart."

Roth's team has not issued an official statement explaining the sudden cancellations. The reported cause is weak ticket sales rather than something like a health issue. The news came as something of a surprise since the 71-year-old had already played several dozen dates without incident this year, though reviews seem to have have been mixed. His last show took place July 18 in Fort Hall, Idaho. Every remaining date through September has now been pulled except for an August 7 stop in Sturgis, South Dakota, which still appears on his tour schedule.

The abrupt halt follows months of turbulence for the tour. A June concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was scrapped just hours before doors opened after reportedly selling only around 200 tickets. Online chatter dubbed the pattern "Blue Dot Fever," referencing the sparsely filled seating maps that became a recurring sight on ticketing sites as the summer wore on.

Hagar, who took over as Van Halen's frontman when Roth exited the band in 1985, is in the middle of his own victory lap. His "Best of All Worlds" residency returns to Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas for five shows running September 18 through 26, backed by a lineup that includes Anthony and guitarist Joe Satriani. It's that stage Hagar pointed to when he extended his invitation, which seemed to be a heartfelt offer for a pair of people who are in an extremely exclusive club despite past personal differences.

Whether Roth takes him up on it remains unknown. For now, Hagar's message stands as a rare public moment of goodwill between two men whose rivalry has shadowed Van Halen's legacy for decades, offered at a moment when one of them clearly needed to hear it.

We all want to put our best foot forward when we are introduced to someone for the first time. It’s understandable. And if you’re someone who struggles in the social department, then first impressions might make you lie awake at night. Even if you usually don’t sweat that kind of thing, it’s also valid that you want to make sure you’re not pulling a faux pas you might not have been aware of. That’s why it’s a good idea to brush up on one type of question, in particular, that might make you appear “unclassy” if you ask it when first meeting someone, per an etiquette expert.

Maybe you’re meeting your future in-laws for the first time, and don’t want to give them a reason to dislike you. Or maybe you’re having coffee with a major client that you really want to land. Even a blind date or new friend meet-up can go awry if you do one of the main things experts tell you to avoid. 

Previously, Parade spoke with some etiquette experts to find out phrases that instantly make you sound classy. They had also shared a handful of phrases that will do the opposite right out of the gate—including a certain type of rude or inappropriate question that will make you appear "unclassy" when you first meet someone.

Read on to find out what not to ask when meeting someone, plus how to politely handle an interaction where you’re on the receiving end of an uncouth question.

The #1 First Impression Mistake: Why Asking Personal Questions Backfires

While the experts Parade spoke to shared a handful of things that could make you seem unclassy on first meeting someone, asking overly personal questions will do the trick quite well (to your detriment, of course). 

That’s because intrusive questions such as “Are you married?” or “Do you have any children?” can be touchy subjects. Those are tied to topics and information that someone might deem sensitive or just too intimate, per Laura Windsor, who is a UK etiquette expert and a trusted advisor to international royal families and celebrities.

“You don’t know what is happening in people’s lives, their life history, and you are in danger of making them feel uncomfortable,” she explained. “Perhaps a couple cannot have children, or they have just had a miscarriage. Not a great recipe for creating rapport with someone.”

It’s also important to be cognizant of what you’re asking and to whom, and how it might come across. While you might not think anything of asking “Where are you from?” if the person has an accent, it might come off as you implying something you might not be. For this reason, Windsor recommended asking, “Where’s home for you?” instead.

“This allows the person to whom you are talking the freedom to offer as much or as little information as they wish,” she shared. “They may come from a war-torn country so they may not feel comfortable saying so. This allows them to either say ‘Oh, I live in London’ or ‘Oh, I live in London, but I’m from….’”

And on the note of overly personal questions, Windsor—who also served as the onset Regency-era etiquette consultant for Netflix’s series, Bridgerton—said that asking “What do you do for work?” might fall under this category for some.

“This can sometimes be perceived as a little too invasive or pigeonholing someone, especially at a social event,” she stated. 

While understandable that you’d want to strike up a conversation with someone and, since we all work, you figured it could be common ground. But it’s not really the classiest thing you could ask, and Windsor added that this question could lead to the dialogue quickly becoming awkward if the other person doesn’t want to disclose their job, or if they’re unemployed.

What to do instead is to talk about things such as the venue you’re at, how they know the host if it’s a party, current events outside the political or controversial realms, hobbies and upcoming plans (such as for summer or winter breaks). You’ll be rewarded with at least a not-awkward interaction if you keep it chill and low-stakes.

What Not To Ask: 5 Inappropriate Questions To Avoid When Meeting Someone1. Questions about money, salary or cost of living

• How much did you make last year?
• How much do you pay per month for rent?
• Do you have a lot in your savings account?

It’s never great to compare things, let alone bringing up quantifiable ways to compare people. That’s what questions about money and how much you pay in rent or mortgage ultimately do. Even if the person asking isn’t meaning to pit people against each other—or doesn’t ask questions as invasive as those above—this kind of inappropriately, overly personal question does that. 

2. Relationship status, family planning or marriage questions

• Do you struggle with infertility?
• How come it’s taking so long to start a family?
• How long are you going to be engaged for?

As mentioned above, you don’t know what people are going through. So even asking something as seemingly “mundane” as “Are you married?” or “Do you have any children?” might open up hard feelings someone has about marriage, pregnancy, etc. So it’s good to stay away from these topics. 

3. Career judgments 

• Why do you do that?
• Are you sure that’s gonna be sustainable in 5 years?
• Why aren’t you working in the field you went to college for?

This one is kind of obvious, and touches on personal questions we already shared not to ask. But again, this can really put people on the spot, and might not be something everyone’s comfortable talking about.

4. Opinionated, judgmental questions

• Why do you think that way?
• Are you sure that’s the best way to do that?

It’s probably a no-brainer, but don’t ask questions that give away any judgmental opinions you might have about them or what they’ve shared with you. Even if you’re thinking these things, don’t ask questions giving away any negative opinions. 

5. Politics, religion and polarizing views

This one is also obvious, and we really don’t need to give examples of questions here. Just steer clear of politics, religion and anything controversial, or that has a lot of heated debate around it. If it’s your first time meeting someone, then you need to stick to lighter topics and nothing that could invoke a fight of any kind.

How To Politely Handle Intrusive Questions Yourself

So what do you do if you’re on the receiving end of an inappropriate or intrusive question? In a recent interview with Parade, Dr. Gayle MacBride, PhD, LP, a psychologist with Veritas Psychology, shared that you should use “boundary phrases” if you’re put in this position. These are phrases that do exactly what it says in the name: it sets a boundary and explicitly tell the other person what you will and will not answer. 

Her favorite boundary phrase is “I’m going to keep that private.” It gives a concise and clear limit and doesn’t leave room for argument (though some might try). But regardless of how it’s received, it sets your parameters on the inappropriate query. 

But Dr. MacBride was aware that some people might feel uncomfortable being assertive or setting a necessary boundary, because it feels so finite and aggressive. However, you can take “a more nuanced approach,” she told Parade. 

“You do not always need the verbal equivalent of a stop sign,” she noted. “Sometimes a little deflection goes a long way. Sometimes you need a yellow light. Sometimes you need to be absolutely clear.”

A “yellow-light” phrase sounds like “I’d rather not get into that,” whereas a very assertive phrase that’s still respectful is, “That’s not something I’m discussing.”

“The best boundary phrase is the one that matches the level of intrusion,” she explained. “Think green, yellow, red: polite but private, clear refusal or full stop.”

When the Beach Boys released “California Girls” in 1965, it quickly became a classic — but the song wasn’t done making history. Two decades later, a rock star’s remake gave it a surprising second life.

Written by Brian Wilsonand Mike Love, “California Girls” featured a catchy pop-rock melody as it celebrated a carefree West Coast lifestyle and the girls of California. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1965, becoming one of the Beach Boys' most iconic hits.

Fast forward to 1985, and David Lee Roth reimagined the song with a rock star fantasy spin for his EP Crazy From the Heat. Roth’s “California Girls” also hit No. 3 on Billboard as it found a new audience with the MTV generation.

Despite a 20-year gap, the two versions of the song shared a remarkable connection: both featured harmony vocals by Beach Boys band member Carl Wilson.

Roth’s solo hit also featured Christopher Cross, the Grammy-winning hitmaker behind the 1979 soft rock hit “Sailing.” Cross once explained that producer Ted Templeman wanted a connection to the original Beach Boys sound for Roth’s record, so he sought out the ‘60s music legend.

“In the case of David and Ted Templeman, I think what happened was…they really wanted a stamp of approval and validation on doing 'California Girls,'” Cross told Popdosein 2011. “And truth be told, I think they knew I was close to Carl, and they thought, 'Well, if we get Christopher, then we can get Carl! And they didn’t care about me, ‘cause they got a real Beach Boy! So it was fun”

The music video for Roth’s “California Girls" was nothing like a sunshiny Beach Boy clip. The rocker’s mini film was more of a rock star fantasy than a California dream, complete with bikini models and flamboyant rocker energy.

In an interview shared by Something Else Reviews, Roth summarized his cheeky “California Girls” video.

“They really held on to what for me was vaudeville,” the  Van Halen alum said. “It was the Sunshine Guys. It was ‘Hell’s a’ Poppin.’ It was the Marx Brothers meets a little Spiderman times, I don’t know, Dean Martin and the Golddiggers times Wizard of Oz, and a whole lot of rock and roll thrown in. You can’t get past ‘California Girls’ musically without a whole… it’s quintessential popular, rock and roll of a certain time frame. Actually, it’s not even a time frame, it’s a place: You’re at the beach. If you’re driving, and that music comes on, you’re somewhere where there’s salt water, and skimpy bathing costumes.”

While the two versions of the song were very different, Roth did indeed get the approval of one of the original songwriters. In 2005, Brian Wilson told the New York Times he was a fan of Roth in the 1980s. “I thought that his version of ‘California Girls’ was really, really good,’” the Beach Boys legend added.

More than 60 years after its original release, "California Girls” remains a summertime anthem, proving that even a classic can be reinvented for a new generation of fans.

An Interactive Dance Party on the Shoreline

What sets this new experience apart from a traditional theme park parade is its midpoint interactive sequence. During the procession, the Princesses step down from their floats to teach guests character-specific choreography right on the promenade.

Moana demonstrates traditional Pacific Islands dance moves, while Raya leads guests through martial arts-inspired choreography. Alongside them, their beloved sidekicks—including Heihei, Pua, Tuk Tuk, Ray, and Pascal—join the action to help select guests step right into the performance.

Bringing this interactive moment to life took a year and a half of creative development and 287 rehearsal hours.

Intricate French Craftsmanship and Original Music

The production highlights a deep collaboration between Disney's creative teams and regional French artisans. The floats, built by a Nice-based street art company, faithfully recreate iconic movie locations including Motunui (Moana), the Heart Palace (Raya), the festive streets of New Orleans (Tiana), and The Snuggly Duckling tavern (Rapunzel).

The hand-crafted costume and float details show off extraordinary attention to detail:

• 120 meters of handcrafted, frayed, and sewn fringes for Moana’s kites.
• 900 individual fabric pieces cut and sewn for the manes of Raya’s dragons.
• 24 hand-sculpted and hand-painted feathers decorating Tiana’s companion props.
• 13 custom-sculpted ducks ornamenting Rapunzel’s tavern float.

The soundtrack features two new original songs recorded between Nashville and Paris by a 50-piece orchestra, weaving classic Disney Princess themes into high-energy arrangements.

A New Look for Minnie Mouse

The debut of the new cavalcade brings a slight shift to the park's daily entertainment schedule. As the Disney Princess Cavalcade steps into the spotlight, the Disney Marching Band led by Minnie Mouse will wrap up its run.

Fans of classic Disney characters won't miss out, however. Minnie Mouse will be stepping into a brand-new, Victorian-inspired outfit and making occasional appearances at the West Pavilion for exclusive guest meet-and-greets.

With the Disney Princess Cavalcade running year-round, travelers planning a European trip to check out the new World of Frozen will have a major new entertainment experience waiting for them along the water.

What do cowboys and rock stars have in common? If you ask Steven Tyler, quite a bit. The parallels between riding the open range and touring the world playing rock n' roll are what inspired one of Aerosmith's all-time classic hits, "Back in the Saddle."

Written by Tyler and Joe Perry, "Back in the Saddle" was the opening track on Aerosmith's 1976 album, Rocks (later released as a single in March 1977). It was designed to kick off the record with a bang...and that's exactly what it did.

In Walk This Way: The Autobiography of Aerosmith, Rocks producer Jack Douglas explained that "Back in The Saddle" was recorded "to have this larger-than-life vibe, to bring the band right into the middle of the kid's head when he put on his phones in his bedroom late at night."

According to Douglas, the lyrics for "Back in the Saddle" were born when he said to Tyler, "I wish we could use this saddle image as a way of saying, 'Here's another album, folks, and we're gonna rock out and I've really got my spurs on.' Steven went into the stairwell for two hours and came back with reams of paper with ideas on them, and we cut the vocals."

In his memoir, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?, Tyler recalled drawing inspiration from classic Western movies while coming up with the words:

Riding into town alone by the light of the moon
I'm looking for old Sukie Jones, she crazy horse saloon
Barkeep give me a drink, that's when she caught my eye
She turned to give me a wink that'd make a grown man cry

"'Back in the Saddle' I hoped would be nostalgic, harkening to the spirit of every Spaghetti Western I ever saw," Tyler wrote. "The band played like the gods they were."

In his own memoir, Rocks: My Life in and Out of Aerosmith, Perry said "Back in the Saddle" "had us riding back out there on the rock 'n' roll range."

The guitarist went on to note that when he wrote the music for the song, he "was in my bedroom, flat on my back, f—d up on heroin, playing my six-string bass. The music flew out of me — all the parts, all the riffs. It came in one special-delivery package. I was still in the stage when the drugs were opening doors to my imagination. And I was lucky enough to have a connection that got me heroin as close to pure as I would ever see."

The cowboy themes in the lyrics extended to the sound of "Back in the Saddle." During the recording, Tyler gaffer-taped tambourines to his cowboy boots (with the help of New York Dolls singer David Johansen) and stomped up and down on a piece of plywood. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Tyler clapped a pair of coconuts together to make the galloping horse sound —and while he tried to use a real bullwhip to produce the cracking whip noise, he ended up faking it by snapping an instrument cable after band members hurt themselves with the real thing.

"Back in the Saddle" was a modest success on the charts, peaking at #38 on the Billboard Hot 100, but went on to become one of the band's signature hits. Rolling Stone ranked it #4 on a list of Aerosmith's "50 Best Songs," calling Rocks the "best American hard-rock album of the 1970s."

On this day in 1977, a record built almost entirely by machine reached the top of the UK charts, and pop music was never quite the same.

Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" hit No. 1 in the UK, where it held for four weeks, the first and only British chart-topper of the Queen of Disco's career.

Produced and co-written by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, "I Feel Love" sounded like nothing else on the radio. Its hypnotic, pulsing groove was generated by a Moog synthesizer rather than a band, and reportedly the only part not played by a machine was the kick drum. The song appeared on Summer's 1977 album I Remember Yesterday.

The Sound of the Future

The reaction was immediate. Brian Eno, then in Berlin making records with David Bowie, reportedly rushed into the studio to announce he had "heard the sound of the future," predicting the track would reshape club music for years. He was right. Its robotic synth pulse became a blueprint for the synth-pop, techno and electronic dance music that followed.

Still the Benchmark

The song's stature has only grown. Billboard later ranked it the best dance song of all time, ahead of Chic's "Good Times", Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and Madonna's "Vogue". It almost went unheard, though: "I Feel Love" first came out as a B-side before being flipped once audiences caught on. Forty-nine years later, the machine-made track that startled a generation still sounds like the future.

While Greek mythology was a fun topic to cover in entertainment, author Madeline Miller help to revolutionize the historical fiction genre. Today, the "Queen of Epic Ancient Greek Retellings" turns 48.

Novels and movies focused on Greek mythology were fun, but they mostly focused on gods we all knew about. Look at the Percy Jackson novels, with the heavy focus on Zeus and Poseidon, or at the way Disney focused on Hercules. Miller focused on other stories.

While Troy helped to put Achilles on the map of interest, Miller furthered that with her 2011 debut, The Song of Achilles. It won the prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction in 2012, which made the 10-year process to write the novel worth it. Little do many know but she worked as a Latin and Greek teacher while working on the novel, and even threw away a completed draft five years into the process because she couldn’t get Patroclus’s voice just right.

The Song of Achilles gained traction thanks to BookTok. Arguably, the release of her follow-up, Circe, in 2018 also helped. With the resurgence, The Song of Achilles went back on the New York Times bestseller list, and the interest has only grown since.

One of the reasons readers head to her stories is for the different perspectives. Sure, we all know Homer’s Odyssey, but what do you know of the evil witch who transforms men into pigs? Did you ever think of her story and how she became the villain of the tale? Miller did, and that’s where Circe came from.

Her work within the world of Greek mythology isn’t over. She currently has an untitled work in progress, which is said to be about Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld and Goddess of Spring. Many have written romances about Persephone and Hades, but we know the world-building and storytelling Miller is best known for, making this completely different to anything you’ve read before. There is no release date just yet, but fans are already eagerly anticipating it on Goodreads.

If it’s anything like The Song of Achilles, we can expect wonderful prose. It’s sure to be worth the wait, even if it does take a decade!

It's one of Fleetwood Mac's most enduring songs, but it only took Stevie Nicks minutes to write.

Fleetwood Mac's 1977 hit "Dreams," featured on their legendary Rumors album, was born in just 10 minutes, yet it has spent nearly six decades as one of the most popular tracks from the band's catalog. It rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 just months after its release, and still remains as the band's only song to ever do so.

But for a song with such a storied history, "Dreams" came together almost instantly.

"I sat down on the bed with my keyboard in front of me, found a drum pattern, switched my little cassette player on, and wrote 'Dreams' in about ten minutes," Nicks once told Blender Magazine, as reported by Rolling StoneAustralia. "Right away I liked the fact that I was doing something with a dance beat, because that made it a little unusual for me."

Before recording "Dreams" with bandmates Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie, Nicks first presented the song to Buckingham, despite the fact that they were in the middle of a breakup at the time.

"I remember the night I wrote 'Dreams," Nicks recalled to the Daily Mail in 2009. "I walked in and handed a cassette of the song to Lindsey. It was a rough take, just me singing solo and playing piano. Even though he was mad with me at the time, Lindsey played it and then looked up at me and smiled."

"What was going on between us was sad," Nicks said about the downfall of their relationship, which lasted for about four years between 1972 and 1976.

Nicks and Buckingham weren't the only members of the group who were going through a breakup while working on the Rumors album, as John and Christine McVie were also in the midst of a divorce around the same time.

"We were couples who couldn't make it through," Nicks added. "But, as musicians, we still respected each other and we got some brilliant songs out of it."

And the songs were brilliant indeed, with "Dreams" going down in history as a beloved soft-rock staple. The Rumors album also introduced several other iconic Fleetwood Mac songs, including tracks like "Go Your Own Way" and "The Chain."
