Nancy Guthrie Update: Sheriff’s Department Makes Sudden Change, Former Detective Reacts (Exclusive)
New developments in the case of Nancy Guthrie are drawing attention after the sheriff’s department appears to have made a sudden change to how its radio transmissions are handled. According to YouTube streamers and others following the case, the department has encrypted those communications so that the public can no longer listen in.
While restricting public access to live police communications can help prevent criminals from tracking officer locations and response times—or even planning ambushes—a former detective says transparency is key. Without clear communication about why the move was made, especially in the midst of a high-profile investigation, the decision could raise concerns among both the public and the media.
To better understand why this change happened now, as the Guthrie case is still ongoing, Parade reached out to former NYPD detective David Sarni for some insight.
"When police radio transmissions can be heard live, they can be used to find out response times or even the location of officers," Sarni tells me. "And for safety purposes, agencies are looking to stop them from being public and/or live."
Despite some potential workarounds—Sarni mentions paid apps like "Citizen"—keeping radio transmissions away from the public can be safer for law enforcement.
"Criminals use radio access to locate police and to ID response times," Sarni continues. "There can be policy made as to how radio transmissions can be accessed post-incident, but it makes sense in a heightened terrorist threat, for example, to side with the police on this point."
Sarni says that the Pima County Sheriff's Department should have explained its reasons for encrypting its radio transmissions in the midst of such a high-profile case.
"Pima County needs to be more transparent as to why, especially to local government, because the optics seem as though it’s being done to punish media and disallow access especially amid such a high-profile abduction," Sarni adds.
Parade reached out to the Pima County Sheriff's Department for comment but did not hear back.
Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Anyone with information about what happened to her, the people responsible, or her whereabouts is asked to call the FBI (1-800-CALL-FBI).

1971 Chart-Topper Turned a Tale of Unrequited Love Into a Nostalgic Pop Hit

The song stood out for its clever production. The layered vocals, playful percussion, and subtle touches of R&B gave the song a warmth and charm that set it apart from other hits on the radio in 1971, allowing it to rise to the No. 1 spot on the charts in January.

'Knock Three Times" was written by L. Russell Brown and Irwin Levine. Per The Tennessean. According to the newspaper, Brown reportedly called upon his youth growing up in an apartment building, using the "system his neighbors used to let each other know when they had a phone call downstairs" as the song's base.

Brown told the Nashville Songwriters Association International, "I went to Irwin's house and Irwin said, 'Let's talk about how you grew up in the housing projects.' I said, 'Well, we only had one phone in the building, but we had radiators with steam heat. And, if you lived on the second floor, someone with the phone would hit (the radiator) twice, bing, bing, and you would know the phone call was for you.'"

And he writes a string with a note and some insane kind of beautiful idea of a man dreaming of a girl who is just one floor below he hears the music, and he's envisioning everything."

Makeup Artists Say You Shouldn't Use This 1 Technique After 40
There's a reason you might think your makeup suddenly stopped looking as good as it used to, and it's not that you've forgotten how to apply it. Your skin has changed—it's drier, thinner and has more texture than it did a decade ago. I know, life is not exactly fair!—but you're still using the same techniques and formulas that worked beautifully when your face was completely different. What once created a flawless finish now settles into lines you didn't know existed. What used to look polished might look heavy and flat now.
The most frustrating part? Many women respond to these changes by adding more product—more coverage to hide uneven tone, more powder to set everything, more concealer under the eyes. But celebrity makeup artists who work with mature skin daily see this backfire constantly. The techniques trending on TikTok (think: full-coverage matte foundation, heavy contouring, dramatic eyeliner) are often designed for younger skin with different needs.
Makeup after 40 isn't about doing more. It's simply about doing things differently. We talked to celebrity makeup artists who've worked with everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Quinta Brunson to find out which popular techniques actually age your face and what to do instead. Set those Beauty Blenders down for just a quick second and listen up for some new beauty tricks!

The experts were unanimous: heavy, full-coverage foundation is likely aging your face.
Molly R. Stern, who works with Chelsea Handler and Maya Rudolph, identifies this as one of two "major" mistakes, sharing, "Less is more. Use concealer or foundation only where you need it.”
She goes on to say that a face with foundation from hairline to chin is too heavy and will generally settle into fine lines and just generally makes the face look dull.
Scott Barnes—whose clients include Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Gwyneth Paltrow—explains exactly why those viral TikTok techniques don't translate to real life.
"Full-coverage matte formulas are fundamentally thicker and drier, this makes them great for covering blemishes and discolorations as well as offering long wear, especially those with oilier skin,” he says. But for mature skin that tends to be drier with deeper expression lines and wrinkles, these heavy matte formulas tend to look cakey and flat, aging the skin even more.
But that doesn’t mean people with mature skin can or should avoid foundation entirely!
According to celebrity makeup artist Jenepher Reynolds, who's worked with Norah Jones and Harry Connick Jr., there’s updated formulas that make skin shine.
"Today's formulas are often sheer, hydrating and softly radiant,” she tells Parade. “A lightweight foundation, tinted primer or BB cream can even out redness and discoloration while still letting your skin look like skin.”
Barnes also recommends reaching "for medium coverage foundation with a satin or dewy finish, applying with a dual fiber foundation brush in outward, circular strokes to avoid trapping product in the peach fuzz on the face. For any areas that need additional coverage (such as melasma, broken capillaries or sunspots), layer on concealer."

5 Other Makeup Techniques That Can Make You Look OlderBeyond heavy foundation, several other common makeup techniques are actually working against mature skin.
1. Heavy eyeliner that closes up your eyesRenée Loiz, who works with Quinta Brunson and Uzo Aduba, warns against "heavy black eyeliner on the lid. Thick black liner can close up the eyes, make them look smaller and feel dated. Instead, I recommend using a dark brown or brown black liner and tightlining right into the lashes. It opens up the eyes and makes the lashes look fuller without looking harsh."
Reynolds agrees about ditching harsh liner.
"As the eyes naturally change with age, a thick line can take over and make the eyes appear smaller or more closed," she shares.
Instead, she says to focus on soft definition, echoing Loiz's recommendation: “Tightline between the lashes to subtly enhance the eyes without creating a harsh line. Then, add a soft shadow along the upper lash line to build shape."
Avital of Puzzle Makeup has a specific warning about under-eye liner.
"If you've been reaching for a dark pencil under your eyes, it's time to stop. On mature skin, dark liner creates shadow, heaviness and a drooping effect that no amount of concealer can fix," she says.
Instead of liner, she says to try a soft glow or matte eyeshadow applied gently under the lower lash line with a mini brush. It creates the definition you want without the heaviness.

2. Blush placement that could be dragging your face downLoiz has strong opinions here.
"Avoid placing blush directly on the apples of the cheeks," she tells Parade. "That placement can make the face look rounder and less lifted. I prefer applying blush higher up toward the temples to give the face a more sculpted, lifted effect."
However, Barnes also warns against the opposite extreme—the trendy "blush blocking" technique.
"[It's] another avant-garde runway look where a wider block of blush is intensely applied high on the face, close to the temples. [It's] beautiful on the runway and I have seen some really fun editorial looks with this—but as we mature, guess what else is higher on the face and close to the temples? Wrinkles and textured skin around the eye area," he notes.
His preferred technique? Layer a cream blush with a powder blush for a natural, dimensional flushed look that stays all day without looking heavy or cakey—focusing on the apples of the cheeks, directly under the iris of your eye as you look forward.

3. Bleached or ultra-light brows that can wash you outWhile this trend looks editorial on runways and younger celebrities, Barnes doesn't recommend it for mature skin.
"Bleaching or lightening brows that are naturally sparser at this stage in your life is going to wash you out and potentially age you," he explains.
He recommends Anastasia Brow Wiz because "there is a color for everyone—I love the formula as it's not too waxy and the ultra-fine tip allows you to draw hair line strokes so you don't get that thick obvious brow pencil look."

4. Using the wrong technique to blend eyeshadow"If you've been blending your eyeshadow in circles, this is why it never looks quite right," Avital tells Parade. "Blending with the head of the brush in circles directly on the skin is one of the most common techniques women are taught and it's aging your eyes without you even realizing it. It pulls color down, creates muddiness and works against mature skin every single time."
Instead? "Use the body of your brush, not the tip," she suggests. "Soft strokes from the outer corner inward—that's it. No circles, no back and forth."

5. Testing lipstick in the wrong placeAvital points out a mistake almost everyone makes.
"Ever notice how lipstick looks perfect on your arm and then completely different on your lips? That's exactly why swatching on your inner wrist doesn't work. Lip color changes based on your natural lip tone and how light reflects off the pigment," she explains.
Instead, apply it directly to your lips and see how it actually looks on you.

4 Best Makeup Tips for Mature WomenSmall adjustments create dramatic improvements in how fresh and modern your makeup looks.
1. Update your routine regularlyReynolds sees women stuck in ruts constantly.
"A lot of women find a routine that works and stick with it for years. The same shades, the same placement, the same products. The challenge is that skin tone, texture and facial structure naturally evolve over time. What once looked balanced can start to feel dated without you even realizing it," she says.
Instead, revisit your makeup every few years. Update your shades, try newer formulas and adjust placement slightly.
2. Don't be scared of colorStern identifies this as the second major mistake she sees.
"Women over 40 get scared of bold colors," she tells Parade. "A bright flush on the cheek can really spruce up anyone's look. Same with a bright lip.”

3. Master the powder techniqueWhile heavy powder can age skin, Loiz has an alternative technique that works.
"I like to lightly mist a powder brush with setting spray, tap it into loose powder and press it only into the areas that need setting,” she explains, adding that this gives more of an airbrushed finish and keeps the skin from looking cakey.
4. Think in layers and placementBarnes locks everything in with "a light dusting of translucent loose powder," sharing, "Makeup Forever Translucent is my all-time go to."
He also finishes faces by taking the blush brush with whatever product remains and then bounces it across the bridge of the nose, explaining that this technique gives a beautiful, healthy look for mature skin.

10 Cruise Etiquette Rules First-Timers Always Miss (And Regret Later)
There is something almost cinematic about stepping onto a cruise ship for the first time. The scale of it, the hum of activity, the quiet realization that this floating world will be your home for the next several days. Everything feels easy at first. Meals appear when you want them, destinations unfold without effort, and the ocean stretches endlessly in every direction.
But somewhere between your first buffet run and your second attempt to find a pool chair, you start to notice the rhythm beneath it all. Cruises are about sharing space, time, and experience with thousands of other travelers. And for first-timers, it is often the unspoken rules, the small habits and overlooked courtesies, that shape whether the trip feels seamless or surprisingly stressful.

Before You Board: Cruise Planning Etiquette That Sets You Up for Success1. Learn the Ship Before You Step OnboardSeasoned cruisers often emphasize using the cruise line app and reviewing itineraries in advance. Experienced travelers recommend downloading the app early and reviewing schedules to avoid confusion and missed reservations. "Do your homework before you get on the ship. Read everything you can and pay attention to the app. The more you know, the better your cruise will be," said TravelHost's Come Cruise With Me Editor in Chief Daniel Kline.
2. Do Not Arrive Late to EmbarkationCruise ships run on strict timelines. Boarding windows exist for a reason, and ships will not wait for late arrivals. Being late disrupts staff workflow and creates bottlenecks for other passengers. Arriving early gives you breathing room and sets the tone for a more relaxed trip.
3. Pack With Awareness of Shared SpaceCabins are compact by design. Overpacking quickly turns into clutter, especially when two people are sharing a room. A streamlined approach makes everything easier from day one.

4. Do Not Reserve Pool Chairs You Are Not UsingThis is one of the most talked-about cruise frustrations. Leaving a towel on a chair for hours without actually being there creates unnecessary tension. According to Business Insider, etiquette experts and frequent cruisers consistently call this out as inconsiderate behavior that impacts everyone trying to enjoy limited deck space.
5. Practice Good Hygiene in Dining AreasThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends frequent handwashing on cruise ships, especially before eating, because illnesses like norovirus spread easily in close quarters. This is why you will see handwashing stations at buffets and sanitizer at nearly every entrance.
6. Keep Noise Levels RespectfulCabins are closer together than most hotels, and sound carries easily through hallways and walls. Experienced cruisers often point out that late-night noise, loud balcony music, or slamming doors can quickly disrupt others' experience, per Business Insider.
7. Follow Dress Codes When They ApplyExperts note that showing up underdressed can affect the shared atmosphere and experience for others who planned for the occasion, as Business Insider reports. Julie Hirst told the outlet, “Showing up at a formal night in shorts and flip-flops is unacceptable. If you do not want to participate, that is your choice, but do not ruin the event for the other passengers.”

8. Be On Time for Shore ExcursionsExcursions operate on tight schedules tied to port departure times. Being late can delay entire groups or cause them to miss the experience altogether. Travel experts, via Southern Living, emphasize that punctuality during excursions is critical, both for logistics and for respecting fellow travelers’ time.
9. Treat Crew Members With RespectIndustry organizations like Cruise Lines International Association highlight that service quality is a defining part of the cruise experience, supported by extensive onboard staffing and safety standards. Acknowledging that effort with patience and respect helps maintain the positive environment that makes cruising special.
10. Understand Tipping ExpectationsWhether included automatically or paid separately, tipping reflects appreciation for service staff who work behind the scenes. Understanding the system ahead of time avoids confusion and awkward moments onboard.

The Takeaway: Cruise Etiquette Is About Awareness, Not PerfectionCruise etiquette is not about strict rules or formal behavior. It is about understanding that you are part of a shared environment where small actions ripple outward.
From something as simple as washing your hands to arriving on time for an excursion, these choices shape not just your experience, but everyone else’s too.
The best cruises I have taken were not just about destinations. They were about how easy everything felt. And that ease almost always came down to one thing. Travelers who understood the rhythm of the ship and respected it.
The First All-Inclusive Park Hyatt in Mexico Is a Quiet Luxury Game Changer
For a long time, the phrase "all-inclusive" conjured up images of crowded buffets and neon-colored wristbands. But a new wave of high-end hospitality is proving that one-price-fits-all can actually be the ultimate luxury. The latest heavy hitter to join the movement? Park Hyatt, Hyatt’s crown-jewel brand, which has just announced it will open its first-ever all-inclusive property in the Riviera Maya in late 2026.
Located just 20 minutes south of Cancun International Airport, the Park Hyatt Riviera Maya represents a major shift in the travel landscape. While the region is already home to dozens of resorts, this marks the first time a flagship "ultra-luxury" brand of this caliber has ditched the à la carte model for a seamless, inclusive experience.

It follows a growing trend seen with brands like Marriott’s W and Ritz-Carlton, which are increasingly leaning into the "luxury of ease"—giving travelers the high-end amenities they love, from designer spas to chef-led dining, all with a single "paycheck" at the end.
Though official details are still being kept under wraps, early renderings of the beachfront property showcase a sophisticated, minimalist design that feels more like a private estate than a massive resort.

Expect multiple infinity-edge pools, lush garden terraces, and a world-class culinary program that takes the "all-you-can-eat" concept into the realm of fine dining. It’s the kind of place designed for milestone anniversaries or group getaways where the goal is total immersion in the surroundings rather than managing a vacation budget.

For those who prefer to travel on "points and miles," this opening is particularly significant. As a flagship property, the Park Hyatt Riviera Maya will likely sit in the higher tiers of the World of Hyatt award chart. Under the current structure for all-inclusive stays, travelers can expect to redeem between 35,000 and 58,000 points per night for a two-person booking, depending on the season.
While we’ll have to wait a while to officially check in, the message is clear: the future of Mexican luxury is all-inclusive, and it’s never looked more elegant.

50 Years Later, This Rock Legend Remembers the ‘Incredible’ Moment His Life Changed Forever
Peter Frampton knows exactly where he was on April 10, 1976.
That was the day Frampton Comes Alivehit number one on the charts—and five decades later, the memory hasn't faded one bit.
"I was in New York. I was living in Westchester and I remember being there and getting a call from my manager," Frampton, 75, told UCR in an article shared on Friday, April 10. "He said, 'Sit down.' I said, 'I'm sitting.' And then he said, 'Guess what?' I said, 'What? Tell me!' He said, 'You're number one!'" The reaction? "I was overwhelmed to say the least, you know, so that was an incredible moment."
And the album didn't just peak at number one—it stayed there for a whopping 10 weeks, fueled by the massive airplay of live versions of hits like "Show Me the Way" and "Baby, I Love Your Way."
Drummer Joe Vitale, who joined Frampton's band in 1977 through a connection with bassist Stanley Sheldon, remembers the scale of it. "We were supposed to do three shows and they went quite well," he recalled to the outlet. "And Peter asked me if I wanted to just do the whole tour with him. I said, 'Hell yeah.' He was playing stadiums. These were huge gigs he was doing. I mean, he was, he was a monster star."

Now, 50 years later, Frampton is far from finished. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer recently announced Carry the Light, his first album of all-new rock songs in 16 years, due May 15. Co-written and produced with his son Julian, the record features an impressive guest list including Sheryl Crow, Tom Morello, H.E.R., and more.
"It was one of my most enjoyable projects ever. I got to work with my son Julian—writing and producing together. A first of many for us I'm sure," Frampton said in a statement.
The album comes as Frampton continues to navigate a diagnosis of Inclusion Body Myositis, a rare progressive autoimmune disease that has affected his mobility, which is why he opts to perform sitting down. But thankfully, it hasn't stopped him from making music.
Ann-Margret, 84, Shares Health Update After Scary Fall: 'You Just Get Up' (Exclusive)
Show business icon Ann-Margret will never slow down—even after breaking her elbow in a recent fall.
As devoted fans might remember, the beloved actress, dancer and singer tragically fell 22 feet from a stage in 1972. Now, Ann-Margret—who turns 85 on April 28—is recovering from another fall. In our exclusive chat, she takes Parade inside her recovery from a broken elbow and reveals how she’s bouncing back.
Throughout her six decades as a performer, the stunning redhead has excelled with an incredibly diverse body of work. Ann-Margret made her mark in big-screen musicals such as Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Viva Las Vegas (1964) and Tommy (1975). But she also starred in critically acclaimed dramas like Carnal Knowledge (1971), Magic (1978) and 52 Pick-Up (1986). The Swedish-American beauty has won a whopping five Golden Globe Awards and garnered an Emmy Award for her guest starring role on Law & Order: SVU. Along the way, she's also earned two Academy Award nominations and two Grammy nominations. And the Grumpy Old Men star is always giving back—like when she traveled to Vietnam in both 1966 and 1968 to perform for American troops stationed there.
Next month, Ann-Margret will be honored with a major award for her contributions to dance. Read on as she takes us inside her 1972 accident, her most recent health incident and her upcoming lifetime achievement award.
What did Ann-Margret reveal about falling in 2026?In our exclusive phone interview, Ann-Margret sighs, “I fell the other day and so now my right elbow is broken.” After the actress confirms that she fell at her home, she adds: “That’s okay ... I have fallen so many times. I don’t intend to, but I do! What can I say?”
The star had to cancel an autograph signing as she recovered from the elbow injury. However, fans shouldn’t worry—when asked if she’s on the road to recovery, plucky Ann replies, “Yes, I am. I sure am!”

What was Ann-Margret’s frightening 1972 accident? On Sept. 10, 1972, Ann-Margret suffered a terrible fall from a 22-foot-high platform when she was about to perform at a Lake Tahoe, Nevada casino. She opened up about the horrific injury in her 1994 autobiography, My Story: "My face was collapsed and swollen beyond recognition. Numerous bones in my face were either broken or fractured. My jaw was broken in two places. My left arm was broken … The doctors feared I'd never dance again—if I survived."

Ann-Margret reflects on her 22-foot fall“I have always learned from my parents that you just get up,” she tells Parade. “You just start all over again." Then, she starts singing “Pick Yourself Up" by Jerome Kern: "Nothing’s impossible I have found, for when my chin is on the ground; I pick myself up, I dust myself off, and I start all over again!”

During production, she suffered an on-set arm injury involving TV set glass and was immediately rushed to the hospital. She had to get 27 stitches.
The actress also broke four ribs and a shoulder in a 2000 motorcycle crash. She shrugged it off on Larry King Live. "There are two types of motorcycle riders: ones who have had an accident and ones who will," she said.
Ann-Margret walks the red carpet in 2025. How does Ann-Margret stay in such great shape at the age of 84?Nicknamed the “Sex Kitten” in her 1960s ingénue days, Ann-Margret says that she stays in shape through at-home workouts with a personal trainer. “I have a gentleman that comes Tuesdays, Thursdays and sometimes Fridays," she reveals. Ann's reason for using a personal trainer is one many fans will appreciate. “If I don’t do that, I’ll probably start saying, ‘Well, I don’t know. I’ve got a cold. I’ve got this, I’ve got that.’ But this man keeps me going,” she adds.
What award is Ann-Margret receiving? The performer famed for her dance moves will pick up the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Chita Rivera Awards on May 18, 2026, at the NYU Skirball Center.
“Ann-Margret is a singular icon whose electrifying presence has defined ‘triple threat’ for stage, film and television,” said Joe Lanteri, founder and executive director of the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation, Inc. “She has inspired generations of dancers to perform with the same passion and vivacious spirit that has defined her remarkable six-decade career."

'80s Music Legend Reveals He Created the Iconic Intro to Foreigner’s 'Waiting For A Girl Like You'
"Waiting for a Girl Like You," Foreigner’s 1981 smash hit, is one of the band’s most distinctive songs. A blend of the band’s signature rock sound with atmospheric synthesizer elements, the track reflects the evolving high-production style of the 1980s and early ’90s. Foreigner is known for hits like "I Want to Know What Love Is" and "Hot Blooded," but "Waiting for a Girl Like You" is gaining renewed attention thanks to the revelation of its surprising collaborator.
The Signature Sound Behind the SongWhile Foreigner is known for its powerful vocals and arena rock-meets-pop accessibility, the famed intro to "Waiting for a Girl Like You" features synthesizers and electronic textures not often highlighted in the band’s music. The result is a softer, more atmospheric opening that sets the tone for the song’s emotional core.

1977 ‘Greatest Ballad Ever Written’ Became a Prom Night Anthem
It’s prom season. Which means tuxes, taffeta, and dropping the needle on slow-dance classics that’ll “instantly transport you to your 1970s prom night.”
Over on American Songwriter, they’re celebrating the tradition of itchy corsages and awkward embraces with a curated four-song roundup of the best ’70s slow-dance songs.
View this post on InstagramMentioning “Three Times a Lady” by The Commodores, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin, and “Nights in White Satin” by The Mood Blues, the outlet really hits all the right notes with its decision to highlight the acoustic ballad “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas.
"I’d imagine the lyrics hit even harder during your senior prom as adulthood lingers only weeks away," AS writes.
Written by guitarist and founding band member Kerry Livgren for Kansas’ 1977 album, Point of Know Return, and released as a single the following year, “Dust in the Wind” became the group’s only Top 10 Billboardhit, peaking at No. 6, per Ultimate Classic Rock.
The track’s lyrics, which reflect on the fleeting, ephemeral nature of life, received a little help from some poetry and the Good Book: Inspired by a line in a book of Native American poetry — “All we are is dust in the wind” — Livgren was reminded of Ecclesiastes’ “All is vanity,” which ultimately led him to write the song.
Once written, Livgren was reportedly shy about introducing the song to the band due to its acoustic nature. But following the success of another risk-taking tune, 1976’s “Carry On Wayward Son,” the band was down to give it a whirl.
“When Kerry played ‘Dust in the Wind’ for us, we had never really done an entire acoustic song,” drummer Phil Ehart told UCR. “He prefaced it with, ‘You guys probably won’t like this, because this is an acoustic song.’”
Lore has it, Livgren was fingerplucking the tune at his home when his wife said, “That’s really nice — you ought to maybe write a song with that.” He did, the band loved it, and the rest as they say is smash ballad history.
“Those big songs come along only once in a while,” Ehart told Louder Sound last January. “I’d put 'Dust in the Wind' up there with any of the greatest ballads that have ever been written. You can’t replicate it. It happens in that moment in time and you capture that magic, then it’s gone.”
Just like prom night.

How I Pack for a 7-Day Italy Trip With a Single Carry-On
As a professional travel writer and a self-proclaimed carry-on pro, I’ve learned that the secret to a stress-free trip starts before you even leave for the airport. My obsession with minimalist packing actually began out of necessity when I was an actor on the national tour of A Chorus Line. I spent an entire year living out of a single suitcase, constantly hopping between climates, which taught me exactly how to pare down my wardrobe without sacrificing style.
Since then, I’ve refined my methods while living in tiny cruise ship cabins and navigating solo trips across the globe. If I’m going anywhere for two weeks or less, I only need to bring a carry-on. Some people may read that and think, “But why?!” Here’s the thing: checking a bag (especially if you’re going overseas) is a huge pain. Not only do you have to spend extra time checking into the airport, but you also have to wait to pick up your bag once you land. Plus, if you booked your flight on a budget airline, you’ll have to pay extra for that checked bag.
I can go on and on about all of my reasons for traveling with just a carry-on, but I won’t hold you too long. When it comes to the practicality of it, I actually find that traveling lighter is much more enjoyable. It does take more planning ahead of time, but once you have everything narrowed down to what you actually need, everything else becomes a breeze.
I’ve put this to the test on several recent trips, including a Mediterranean cruise that took me through Rome and Naples last year. Seeing how much easier it was to navigate those cobblestone streets and ship corridors with just one bag really cemented this as my go-to strategy. Today I’m going to show you how I’d pack for a 7-day trip to Italy—specifically to Rome and Florence in the spring and/or beginning of summer. Get your passport, and let’s get packing!

Four Tops And Four BottomsMelissa Cabey
Packing just four tops and four bottoms has been my tried and true method for years now. For this specific trip, I chose two pairs of shorts for the warmer days, and two pairs of pants that can be worn both during the day and in the evenings when it gets a bit cooler. Then, I chose four different tops that can be worn with each of the pants. All together, this gives me 16 possible outfit combinations.
I also bring two layering pieces, which can add variety to each outfit as well. First, I bring a jean jacket, which is obviously for when the weather isn’t too hot. I wear this on the plane, so I don’t have to worry about fitting it into the carry-on. The second layering piece is a thin throw-over collared shirt, which can go on top of any shirt or dress that I packed. This adds just a tiny bit of warmth while also changing up the look of the entire outfit.

Just A Few DressesMelissa Cabey
Since this isn’t a trip where I’d be relaxing by the beach or pool, I don’t need many sundresses. Instead, I chose three dresses in total. Two are great for sightseeing and exploring during the day, and they are also nice enough to be worn in the evening as well. The third dress is specifically to wear out to dinner–reserved for my nicest meal of the week.

Keep The Shoes As Minimal As PossibleI usually stay strict to the three shoe rule, but for this trip, I actually cut it down to two. While in Rome and Italy, I am mainly going to be walking around the cities, visiting museums, and eating a lot of great food. Practically speaking, I need shoes that will be comfortable enough to do tons of walking in.
Melissa Cabey
My first pair of shoes are my favorite pair of white sneakers (the Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Sneakers). These go with every single outfit, have a ton of arch support, and will be sturdy enough to walk miles every single day. The second pair are Vivaia ballet flats, which also offer great support. These will most likely be reserved for the evenings, because they are a bit dressy looking, but they can also withstand a lot of walking.

Toiletries Don’t Need To Take Up A Ton Of SpaceMelissa Cabey
I will never understand why people pack such a large amount of toiletries. I try to keep it as simple as possible. First and foremost, if I am staying in a hotel that will provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, I’m going to plan on using theirs. If I’m unsure, I will only ever pack solid bars of soap. They are so easy to travel with (no exploding liquids to worry about) and they take up a minimal amount of space.
After that, all I need is deodorant, face lotion, face wash, a toothbrush, toothpaste and a razor. All of that can fit in a very tiny toiletry bag, small enough to squeeze into any area of the carry-on.
Melissa Cabey
Everything else is quite simple. You’ll need enough underwear and socks to last you the week, so gather them and throw them in a small packing cube along with a pair of pajamas. I pop my makeup bag directly into the carry-on, along with my hair straightener, hair brush, and a jewelry organizer.
Melissa Cabey
I place all of my electronics in the front flap of my carry-on: laptop, phone charger, watch charger, and plug converters. In my personal item, I pack a book, snacks, medication, and any other things that I might need. I also wear a purse, but I make sure I have enough room in my personal item to fit it in when boarding the plane. This holds my phone, wallet, passport, and headphones.
Top Tips for Your Italian Minimalist Carry-On Mission- The "16-Outfit" Rule: Stick to a strictly cohesive capsule of four tops and four bottoms. By ensuring every piece matches, you unlock 16 different looks without the bulk.
- Layer Like a Performer: Wear your heaviest layer (like a denim jacket) on the plane. Not only does it save massive suitcase space, but it also doubles as a cozy travel blanket.
- The "Rule of Three" (or Two): Limit your footwear to three pairs maximum—though for a city-heavy trip like Italy, you can often get away with just two: a sturdy white sneaker for cobblestones and a dressy-yet-supportive flat for dinner.
- Transition to Solid Toiletries: Ditch the liquid shampoo and body wash bottles. Switching to bars of soap eliminates the risk of "exploding liquids" in your bag and saves precious real estate in your TSA-approved clear pouch.
- Master the "Personal Item" Pivot: Keep your laptop and chargers in the front flap of your carry-on to save weight on your shoulders, and ensure your small crossbody purse can tuck inside your personal item for a seamless "two-bag" boarding process.
- Leave Room for the Return: Never pack your carry-on to the absolute brim. Leaving 10% of your space empty ensures you have "souvenir wiggle room" for that perfect leather find in Florence or a unique find in Rome.

1975 Bob Dylan Track Is Named Among a List of 'Terrible Songs on Great Albums'
Bob Dylan has written some of the biggest songs in music history, but according to Rolling Stone, even he missed the mark a few times.
In fact, one of the songs from Dylan's 1975 album Blood on the Tracks earned itself a spot on Rolling Stone's list of 50 Terrible Songs on Great Albums, where it's ranked among tens of songs that "taint otherwise perfect records."
#14 on the dreaded list is none other than Dylan's track "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts."
"Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" is track 7 on Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album, perhaps one of his most revered records, which hosts beloved hits like "Tangled Up in Blue," "Idiot Wind" and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."
But "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," which is almost nine minutes long, apparently doesn't hold up among the others, according to Rolling Stone, which describes the song's lyrics as "practically impossible to follow."
"Many listeners simply skip past it," the outlet reports, while insisting that the "stripped-down version on 2018’s The Bootleg Series Vol. 14: More Blood, More Tracks is far superior."
View this post on InstagramBut not all Dylan listeners agree with the assessment of "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," including Kevin Bacon, who once described the track as a "super, super fun song. He stated in a 2024 Instagram video, "It's a great story if you follow it."
Blood on the Tracks isn't the only album of Dylan's to feature a song that critics just don't think is up to snuff, as the prolific folk singer is named a total of four times on the Terrible Songs on Great Albums list.
In addition to "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts," Dylan is ranked at #27 with "Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35," off of his 1966 album Blonde on Blonde, an admittedly "controversial choice" from Rolling Stone.
Dylan is mentioned again in the #32 spot with "Joey" from his 1976 album Desire, and again #49 with "Ballad in Plain D" off of Another Side of Bob Dylan (1964).
‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Says His ‘70s Teen Idol Days Were ‘Awesome’—‘Do Not Believe Those Fakers’
In the 1970s, Patrick Labyorteaux was a young teen actor best known for his role as Andy Garvey on Little House on the Prairie. Labyorteaux appeared on the NBC drama series from 1977 to 1981 alongside his brother, Matthew (Albert Ingalls on the series).
At the height of the show’s popularity, the actor brothers frequently appeared in teen magazines, a fun fact that Labyorteaux, now 60, recently shared on his YouTube show, The Patrick LabyorSheaux.
“I was a teen idol, which I can't believe it when I say it, but yeah, I was a teen idol,” Labyorteaux told fans in an April 2026 upload. “I was in the magazines. I was in 16 magazine, Tiger Beat. My brother and I were both in them, and I was just the perfect age to be in them. We were on Little House on the Prairie, and they put us in the magazines, and I swear to you, I absolutely loved it.”
“I mean, come on, what's better than being a teen idol?” he added. “You get all of these pictures of you in magazines. All these girls are going crazy for you, and it's just it was awesome.“
The actor noted that the fandom he received from Little House fans wasn’t Beatles-level hysteria. “We got a lot of mail, and every now and again when we would go out, it would be people would recognize us, but it wasn't like we were chased down,” he clarified. “No one was storming our house to break in, you know. And again, these are Little House fans, so they'd what? They'd storm in, break into the house, and offer to churn your butter? This was not like a dangerous fandom.”
He shared that during his time as a teen idol, he and his brother would go to fan events with fellow popular young stars such as Glenn Scarpelli (One Day at a Time) and Danielle Brisebois (All in the Family) and have a "blast."

While he didn't name anyone directly, Labyorteaux revealed that he took issue with fellow teen idols who downplayed their past.
“The thing I hate is when a person will go, ‘Oh, I was a teen idol. That was so stupid.’ It's like, ‘Dude, it was not. You totally loved it,’” the actor said. “They're trying to act cool, and it just, it comes off fake. It comes off I mean, it's a great thing. …Do not believe those fakers who say, ‘Oh, it wasn't that great.’ Yeah, it was. It was awesome.”
Labyorteaux’s brother was less tuned in to the teen idol fandomThe Labyorteaux brothers were often featured posing together in teen magazine spreads. But while Patrick loved the adulation and purposely posed the way he thought his teen fans wanted to see him, his brother was less in tune with the situation.
In a 2021 interview with Page Six, Matthew Labyorteaux admitted that the teen idol adulation was “lost” on him.
“I mean, you’d walk into a restaurant and people turn and whisper, ask for an autograph or whatever,” he recalled. “Other than that, I didn’t feel like I was the peacock walking down the street, to be honest.”
“I think some people just loved to sort of roll around in that and just enjoy the accolades and the girls chasing after you,” the Little House on the Prairie actor added. “I was a shy, shy kid. I had my animals. I really didn’t know that I was popular.”
If You've Been Dreaming of Retiring In These 7 Southern Cities, Now Might Be the Best Time to Buy
It's no secret that the real estate market has been hot since 2020. And while that has been bad news for hopeful homeowners looking to buy their first house, it may actually spell good news for retirees and those about to retire who are looking to leverage their equity to sell their home and move down South.
But, according to a new report from Realtor.com, those looking to buy in seven super-hot Southern retirement markets are poised to make out like bandits. That's because the real estate website has just declared these seven cities to be in a "buyer's market," meaning buyers in these areas will fare better than sellers. Here are the cities the report says are particularly hot for shopping seniors.
Atlanta, GeorgiaGeorgia is a great state for retirees to head to, thanks to its lax tax rules when it comes to retirement income, including no tax on Social Security income and generous deductions for other types of retirement income, according to the state's website.
And now, buyers hoping to relocate to the state may be able to take even greater advantage of the financial perks here by moving to Atlanta. That's because the city was named as one of the buyer's market metros.
Considering a move to the Peach State and want to know where you'll fit in after you've clocked out for the last time? According to Local Logic, Candler Park is a great fit if you want to prioritize senior must-haves, such as a walkable town with easy access to public transportation, groceries, and parks. Not only that, but the website says that the neighborhood is known for being quiet, which is great if you're hoping to get away from the hustle and bustle in retirement.
Related: These Are the 3 Worst Southern Cities for Retirement
Austin, TexasWhen it comes to retiring in Texas, you may want to head to Austin to put down roots. That's because the city is now officially a buyer's market, making it a great spot to snag a deal. Not only that, but retirees here will get to experience some of the Southern charm that draws people from all over the world to the city.
And, when you're not enjoying the warm weather and all of the access to senior-friendly activities (the city has become an arts and culture hot spot, so you won't be bored), you can rest easy knowing that you'll have access to a wide variety of healthcare providers. According to Medicare Dana, there are three major health systems in the city, allowing retirees to choose when it comes time to pick a doctor.
Curious which neighborhood to start your search for a new home in? Movetoaustin.org says downtown Austin is where it's at.
Nashville, TennesseeMusically inclined retirees may do well in Nashville, which Realtor.com says is also officially in a buyer's market. Like many of the other states on this list, Tennessee is tax-friendly for seniors, as SmartAsset says it doesn't have any income taxes to speak of. That means residents get to keep more of their Social Security, pension, and 401(k) payments when they call this state home.
But when it comes to Music City, you'll be singing about more than just taxes and a friendly real estate market. Nashville is also home to a award winning healthcare system. That, combined with the city's Southern charm, and it's obvious why so many want to call this place home. Looking for the best place to start house hunting? Niche says you should try the Nashville suburb of Oak Hill.
Related: These Are the 3 Worst-Ranked Florida Cities to Retire In
Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, FloridaI can't imagine a world in which we put together a list about Southern retirement cities and don't include at least one spot in Florida. However, Realtor.com's report says that Florida deserves to be on this list four times, thanks to the four cities in the Sunshine State that have switched over to a buyer's market.
Like many other places on this list, Florida boasts all the things you could want in retirement, including great tax perks, warm weather, sunshine, and like-minded people. And when you look at neighborhoods in these four cities, you'll find all of that and more thanks to the affordability benefits. So which neighborhoods should you look into first? According to Niche, you may find your new home sweet home in:
- Sawgrass, Jacksonville, which is located on the First Coast Beaches
- Highland Beach, Miami, which is located on the barrier island between Boca Raton and Delray Beach
- Bay Hill, Orlando, a golf community that is located within walking distance of several different eateries and fine dining establishments
- Redding Beach, Tampa, which offers retirees a mix of urban and suburban living
Of course, anyone who has ever watched the real estate market fluctuate knows that all of this could change in an instant. So, if you're nearing retirement age, or simply daydreaming about heading South, you may want to consider these cities before the market flips and they once again become too hot for many on a fixed income to consider.

1975 Funk Classic Originally Had a Different Name, Now It's a Decade-Defining Hit
Long before it topped best of the decade lists, this 1975 funk classic was nearly released under a different name.
“Get Down Tonight” continues to be a crowd-pleaser more than 50 years after its release by KC and the Sunshine Band. However, the song’s origins include a surprising twist few fans know about.
The hit tune was declared one of the Best of the 1970s by U Discover Music. It is listed among other funk classics such as War's "Low Rider," Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," and A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie."
However, when Harry Wayne Casey (KC) wrote the song, it had a completely different title. He shared the story in an interview with Songfacts.
Parade Daily🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬
KC explained, "'Get Down Tonight' was originally called 'What You Want Is What You'll Get.' A lot of times I will have an idea of a song, and during recording I'll just sing whatever comes into my mind and then go back, and if I don't like that, will change it to another complete title."
RELATED: 1977 Heartbreak Country Hit Recognized as One of the Greatest Songs of the ’70s
"For that particular song and 'I'm Your Boogie Man,' it was different," he continued. "My working title was 'What You Want Is What You'll Get,' and that's what I used during the recording of the record."
He concluded, "Then I came back and decided to change it to 'Get Down Tonight.' I just thought, 'What are the things I like to do?' I love to dance, and so do other people. Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight."
The songwriter discussed the lingo of using the phrase "get down" in the title. He said it was a "common term" that was "floating around." He added, "it was natural to pull from the lingo of the day to make it part of the title."

I Stayed at the $900-a-Night Hotel Inside Universal's Newest Theme Park—Was it Worth the Splurge?
Universal Orlando Resort has nearly a dozen on-site hotels that offer great perks for guests. Over the years of covering theme parks professionally and spending time with my family and friends at Universal Orlando, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at nearly all of them. Still, one really outshines the rest: Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel.
While the spacious rooms and impeccable dining are huge highlights, the real benefit is staying inside Universal’s newest theme park, Universal Epic Universe. Yes, you read that right. The hotel is literally inside the park, with some rooms offering incredible views of it, plus a rooftop bar overlooking the five worlds of Epic Universe. If you’re planning your next trip to Universal Orlando Resort and are still thinking about where to stay, let’s say you’ll want to really consider staying at Helios, even if it's just for one night.
Rooms at Universal Helios Grand Hotel The rooms at Universal Helios Grand Hotel are spacious and comfortable.Universal Orlando Resort
Helios has 500 rooms, broken down into three main categories: standard rooms, concierge rooms, and suites. Standard rooms start at 325 square feet and sleep four people. The standard rooms feature a unique floral design, most prominent on the headboard over the two queen beds and on the carpet. The actual living space is cozy, and besides the bed, has a desk with a chair and a comfortable second chair or lounger. The bathrooms are well-designed with a separate shower and toilet from the sink, so more than one person can be getting ready at once. Larger deluxe queen rooms also have a pull-out couch to accommodate one more person.
Most standard rooms are nearly identical, but prices increase depending on the view you book—during peak season, you'll find rates around $500. Standard view rooms have a view of the city or hotel grounds, while skyline view rooms offer a view of Orlando from the massive floor-to-ceiling window. There are also pool view rooms overlooking the sprawling resort pool.
Kids will love sleeping in the How to Train Your Dragon suites at Universal Helios Grand Hotel.Universal Orlando Resort
Concierge rooms are the same style as the standard rooms, but they do have access to a small concierge lounge where snacks and drinks are served throughout the day. Additionally, suites are ideal for families who want a character-themed room and more space. Kids will love the How to Train Your Dragon Kids' Suite, which has a separate kids' bedroom. There are also larger suites with the same theme as the standard rooms at the resort.
But if you really want the ultimate Helios experience, you’ll do what I did and book a park view room. These are some of the most expensive accommodations, clocking in at nearly $900 some nights during high season. While this may be sticker shock for some, especially since the amenities in the park view rooms are the same as the amenities in the standard rooms, the view is truly breathtaking.
During my stay, I was given a room on the third floor, which offered excellent views of the theme park, including the sweeping gardens of Celestial Park, the spooky spires of Dark Universe, and the kinetic skyline of rollercoasters like my favorite ride, Stardust Racers. In the morning, I woke up and opened the curtains to see the park come to life as team members (what Universal calls employees) put the finishing touches on gardens and overnight work. It felt like getting a backstage pass to see how theme parks really start the day before guests arrive. Then at the end of the night, I watched the fountain show right from the comfort of my room, which was a truly magical way to end an incredible day.
Dining at Universal Helios Grand Hotel Grab a bite to eat at Flora Taverna at Helios Grand Hotel.Universal Orlando Resort
There are four dining options at Helios. The first is a grab-and-go market, Aurora Market, which serves Starbucks coffee and easy snacks. I always stopped here before heading to the park for some quick fuel.
In the middle of the day, the Lotus Lagoon pool bar and restaurant was a hot spot for families. I loved that I could order food and drinks right from my pool chair, but the actual restaurant near the pool is also beautiful if you’re looking for a quick meal without hopping in the pool. Currently, service starts at 11:00 a.m., which is ideal for those who want to get in a few rides at Epic Universe before taking a break back at the pool. A few highlights on the Mediterranean-inspired menu include the chicken avocado wrap and beef kebab.
During my stay, I dined twice at Flora Taverna (once for breakfast and once for dinner), a beautiful restaurant right off the resort's lobby with indoor and outdoor seating. When the weather is nice, you should always opt for the outdoor seating, which overlooks Celestial Park inside Epic Universe. Breakfast at the restaurant starts at 7:00 a.m. and runs until 11:00 a.m.. During breakfast, you have two options. The first is the breakfast buffet, which includes all of the breakfast staples, plus a drink, for $38 for adults and $16 for kids. Alternatively, you can order à la carte. I particularly love the baklava French toast, a fun mashup of the classic Greek dessert with a sort of griddled bread pudding topped with crushed pistachios, dried roses and honey. Flora Taverna’s dinner service takes place from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. The menu really leans into Mediterranean specialties like falafel, lamb lion kebabs, grilled prawns, and watermelon and feta salad.
Bar Helios is a must-visit at Universal Helios Grand HotelUniversal Orlando Resort
The crown jewel of Helios's restaurants is Bar Helios, a rooftop bar with indoor and outdoor seating that overlooks the city of Orlando on one side and Epic Universe on the other. Inside the bar, there’s a jaw-dropping mural overhead showcasing different constellations. Bar Helios is open daily for food and drink service starting at 4:00 p.m.. Just know that food service ends at 11:00 p.m., and bar service ends at midnight. The food menu is mostly shareable tapas, which is always fun if you’re traveling with a bigger group, so you can have a taste of everything. A few of my favorites are the fig carpaccio served with truffles and preserved lemon, and the hot butter crispy calamari with pickled Turkish peppers.
Clash of the Titans from Bar HeliosUniversal Orlando Resort
You also can’t leave without trying some of the cocktails, which are all handcrafted. My favorite drink is the Medusa, which is a fun concoction of The Botanist Gin, za’atar-infused agave, Luxardo Maraschino, lemon and Fever-Tree Sparkling Grapefruit. Additionally, the Clash of the Titans, a close second favorite of mine, is part of the Alchemy by Loews beverage program. The program features a curated menu of drinks layered with subtle sensory elements to elevate the cocktails. The unique concoction is a Tanqueray-forward cocktail featuring lemon, St. German, egg whites, feta-infused honey, and a feta garnish. It's a fantastic cocktail for those who love experimenting with new flavors without being too over-the-top.
Amenities at Universal Helios Grand Hotel The pool is a great spot to rest and reset at Universal Helios Grand Hotel.Universal Orlando Resort
Helios offers an abundance of amenities for guests. The pool offers a large zero-entry pool and a hot tub. Even better, once you find your lounge chair for the day, you never have to get up for drinks or food because servers come right to you. There’s also a game room and gym.
Be sure to browse the souvenir shop too. Here, you’ll find some pieces to complete your ensemble for Epic Universe, including branded backpacks, cute headbands, and t-shirts. There’s also fun tschotchkes to bring home. I ended up finding a great t-shirt to wear into Epic Universe, and now I have it for return trips too.
Access to Universal Epic Universe The Gate is Open: Universal Epic Universe is officially part of the resort's new weeklong ticket bundle, making the "Theme Park Capital of the World" easier (and cheaper) to visit in 2026.Universal Studios
The biggest perk of staying at Helios is the access to Epic Universe. The hotel is literally situated inside the park with a direct access point and security for those staying at the hotel. Even better, those staying at the hotel (and all of the other Universal hotels) get one hour of early park admission, which is a game changer for getting on some of the most popular attractions like Hiccup's Wing Gliders in How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk and Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic.
Pro-tip: From the hotel, you’re very close to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, so consider going there first to ride Battle at the Ministry before exploring other parts of the park. This will ensure the lowest wait times for the marquee attraction. Just be sure to check the digital info boards near security to ensure the ride you want to do first is open during early entry, since it can change.
You’ll want to get in line to go through security and get into the park about 30 minutes before the posted opening time. So if the park has early park entry starting at 8:00 am, then you’ll want to be in line around 7:30 am. This will give you plenty of time to get through security and into the park’s “holding zone” before it officially opens for the day.

Universal Parks
During my stay, I also found it really nice to go back to my room for about an hour after lunch to rest and cool off before heading back out into the park for more fun. Since the hotel is right at the back of the park, it was super easy. From the very back of Dark Universe near The Burning Blade Tavern to get to my third-floor room, it took about seven minutes.
At the end of the night, your hotel room’s proximity to the park is also a major perk. It was so nice to walk right to my cool room rather than trudge through the front of the park, then to the complimentary shuttle buses, drive to another resort, then walk to my room, which can take upwards of 30 minutes.

If you want to visit any of the other three Universal Orlando Resort theme parks, it’s pretty easy. Helios offers complimentary shuttle buses to Universal CityWalk, and from there you can go to either Universal Studios Florida or Universal Islands of Adventure. There's also a dedicated bus line (also complimentary) to Universal Volcano Bay. You’ll use these buses to get back to Helios Grand Hotel at the end of the night, too.
Just know that the buses to the other theme parks can take a while. During my visit, it took nearly an hour to get from my room at Helios to the ticket scanner at Universal Studios Florida. You’ll want to leave earlier than you think if you have timed plans at one of the other three parks.

More Universal Hotel Perks Universal Helios Grand HotelUniversal Orlando Resort
Besides the perks at Epic Universe by staying at Helios, there are some general theme park benefits of staying at any of the Universal Orlando Resort Hotels. Every morning, there is a park with early entry only for resort guests. Additionally, your room key works for charging, and any merchandise you pick up can be shipped back to your resort for free.
How to Get a Deal at Helios Grand HotelIf you’re looking for a deal, the best way to see all of the offers at once is to check out Universal’s special offers tab on its website. Right now, there are discounted rates at Universal Helios Grand Hotel for Florida residents.
Is Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel, Worth the Cost? The view of Helios Grand Hotel from Celestial Park.Universal Orlando Resort
If you’re really trying to get the most out of your Epic Universe day, then yes, Helios is worth the cost. The dedicated entry to Epic Universe is worth the expense by itself. Then add on how close you are to some of the most popular attractions at the park, like Stardust Racers, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, and Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, and it seems like a no-brainer to stay here for at least one night of your vacation at Universal Orlando Resort.
If you don’t want to spend a small fortune to stay at the resort for your entire stay, I suggest booking two Universal Orlando hotels as a split stay. First, check in at one of the cheaper Universal hotels that offer the same hotel perks as Helios. Stay here for the days you plan on visiting Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, and Volcano Bay. Then change to Helios for two nights, the first being your check-in day, and enjoy the pool and resort amenities. Then on the second day, enjoy early entry and proximity at Epic Universe. Then on your third day, your check-out day, you can continue your Orlando vacation elsewhere or head home. This route can also be done in reverse, starting at Helios, then moving to another cheaper Universal Orlando Resort hotel.

5 Books To Read if You Love Watching ‘Outlander'
There’s nothing quite like Outlanderand there never will be. Diana Gabaldon created an epic story of love, loss, and life. She mixed in real history with the fictional tale of Claire and Jamie, as they eventually built a life and home together.
The Outlander TV series has been an excellent adaptation for many people, and there’s no doubt that millions are tuning in for the final season. As you wait between episodes or as you get closer to the end, you may want to find something else to read. We have five great picks for you.
Of course, the Outlander novels are certainly there to reread, then you can follow on with the Lord John Grey novellas and the various short stories, but there are some great authors out there to give a chance.
‘The Winter Sea’ by Susanna KearsleyOne of the most popular books for Outlander fans has to be The Winter Seaby Susanna Kearsley. Just the fact that it is set at the beginning of the First Jacobite Rebellion, in 1708, will be enough to persuade you. At the same time as political intrigue, there’s a love story, deep historical connections, and a story that captures the heart immediately.
Originally published under the name Sophia’s Secret, the story follows Carrie McClelland, who is getting ready to turn the story of James Stewart trying to reclaim his crown into a story. However, as she starts to develop her novel, she realizes that there is far more fact than she ever intended to put in.
Now she needs to figure out whether this is a real memory of an ancestor. As the story unfolds, a betrayal that happened years ago is threatening to come out, and it could bring drama and more political change.
‘Into the Wilderness’ by Sarah DonatiGood historical fiction is able to weave fact and fiction together effortlessly. It’s one of the reasons you love Outlander, right? Well, Into the Wilderness by Sarah Donati does the same. This one is set in 1792 in England and America, but it still brings a story of the Native Americans of the past, pioneering families, and even some Outlander mentions. Yes, Young Ian, Claire, and Jamie are all referenced in the story!
Elizabeth Middleton decides it’s time to join her family in New York, leaving her comfortable English estate behind. The mountain range they live in is like nothing she has ever seen, and there are people she could never even dream about. One of them is a white man dressed as a Native American called Nathanial Booner. To the Mohawk people, he is called Between-Two-Lives.
We get a story that takes us between the English settlers and the Mohawk people of the area. There’s conflict, complexity, and a passionate look at a young America.
‘The Lost Queen’ by Signe PikeThe Lost Queenby Signe Pike is described by many as Outlander meets Camelot, and it certainly is. It captures the stories and love of the rich Scottish history, but it also has the magic and mystery of Arthur Pendragon’s tale. There’s even the love triangle, as one woman has to figure out where her heart lies and what the right thing to do is.
Languoreth and Lailoken are siblings who have been raised in the way of the Old Ways. However, a new religion is rising in Scotland. Christianity is taking over, and the Anglo-Saxons are hellbent on taking over. That brings conflict to the land.
Languoreth finds herself trapped in a marriage to the son of a Christian king, Rhyddrech, but her heart belongs to another. Emrys Pendragon is the hero who calls her name, and now she finds herself torn between duty and love. Is there a way to preserve the old ways, or will they be lost forever?
‘Yellow Wife’ by Sadeqa JohnsonIf you love the real history element added into Outlander, then you’re going to need to check out Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson. This has not been given the hype that it deserves, and that’s possibly because it offers up some uncomfortable storytelling — for good reason!
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Brown was promised freedom when she turned 18. However, that doesn’t happen. Instead, she’s thrown into the world of slavery at the Devil’s Half-Acre (yes, based on a very real place).
Pheby has to figure out a way to survive the torture, and that’s not just inside the jail. When she catches the eye of the jail owner, she ends up in a more harrowing life as his mistress. At least that gives her another chance to steal her freedom.
‘Liberty Street’ by Heather MarshallLiberty Streetby Heather Marshall may not be out in the United States just yet, but it is available in Canada. In fact, this is a Canadian book, set in two timelines in the past to tell one story that is honest and raw. It looks set to be released in June 2026, and you'll want to get your hands on a copy right away!
The first timeline is 1961, where the editorial assistant at Chatelaine magazine, Emily Radcliffe decides that it’s time to take a risk. She needs to figure out the story that is happening behind the walls of the women’s prison not too far from the office. So, she decides to get herself locked up, as she learns just how easy it is, leaving her with very few rights but a major story to break.
However, in 1996, a body has been found in an unmarked grave. Now, Detective Rachel Mackenzie needs to get to the bottom of this mystery, while dealing with the memories of her past coming back to haunt her.
This is a story that will hit you to the core. There are elements based on fact, and that’s partially what makes it so disturbing and uncomfortable. I couldn’t put it down as soon as I started reading it — finishing it in two days only because my eyes got too heavy to read at 2 a.m.! — as I needed answers to so many burning questions.
The First-Ever Coachella Lineup From 1999 Is Wild to See Now
Coachella is celebrating a big milestone this year, so it’s only right to take a look back at where it all started.
The famous desert music festival kicked off its 25th year Friday, April 10 with quite the lineup. This year’s major performers include Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G, among many, many others, and will span two weekends—April 10-13 and April 17-19.
Interestingly enough, the first Coachella was actually held in October and not April. The inaugural festival took place on October 9 and 10, 1999, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio where it still takes place today. But the timing wasn't coincidental—Coachella's announcement came just one week after the conclusion of Woodstock '99, a festival marred by multiple violent issues like looting, arson, violence, and rapes. Organizers wanted to prove a major music festival could be done right.
And the lineup they pulled together for that first weekend looks almost unreal by today's standards. Saturday featured Beck, the Chemical Brothers, and Morrissey, while Sunday was headlined by Rage Against the Machine and Tool, with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals also on the bill. Rage Against the Machine gave the crowd a special surprise toward the middle of their set when they performed "Know Your Enemy" with Tool.Other major acts included Pavement, Moby, A Perfect Circle, Modest Mouse, Spiritualized, plus a strong contingent of electronic acts including Fatboy Slim, Underworld, and Thievery Corporation.

Tickets were just $50 per day, with around 25,000 people in attendance—a crazy comparison to today’s tickets that start at $529 for a single day, with somewhere around 250,000 attendees.
But the price tag isn't the only thing that changed. As social media took hold in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Coachella transformed from a music-first desert gathering into a full-blown cultural moment. Instagram turned the festival grounds into a runway, with bohemian-chic fashion becoming as much a talking point as the headliners themselves. Celebrities began showing up in droves, and the festival's visibility exploded.
Despite the first year’s impressive lineup, the festival wasn't a financial success. Goldenvoice lost $850,000 on the first Coachella, with headliners agreeing to receive deferred compensation. The festival skipped 2000 entirely, returning in April 2001 as a single-day event before reverting to two days in 2002. In 2007, the festival introduced their three day lineup that it still goes by today. The festival was also cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
