It's hard to think of a more iconic, well-respected and generally beloved rock star than Tom Petty. The world is still mourning his unexpected death in 2017 at the age of just 66, but his music is just as popular and relevant as ever. So it might surprise some fans to learn that Petty never actually had a number one hit, though he did have several songs hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, including the best-selling single of his storied career: "Free Fallin.'"

The opening track on Petty's debut solo album, 1989's Full Moon Fever, "Free Fallin'" wasn't just Petty's longest-charting song, it was his highest-charting solo track, peaking at #7 in January 1990 (his duet with Stevie Nicks, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," hit #3 in 1981). Not bad for a song Petty and Jeff Lynne, who would later end up being one of his bandmates in the Traveling Wilburys, reportedly wrote and recorded in just two days.

In an interview from the book Conversations With Tom Petty by Paul Zollo (excerpted by GQ), Petty said "Free Fallin'" was the first song he and Lynne wrote together.

"Jeff came over and I had a little electric keyboard that Bugs [technician and roadie Alan “Bugs” Weidel] had bought. I really gave him hell about buying it. I said, 'Why would you waste money on this? I would never play something like this,'" Petty recalled.

"He said, 'Well, look, take it into the house. If you write one song on it, it will pay for itself,'" he continued.  "And I thought, 'Well, OK,' and Jeff was over and I had the little keyboard. And I started playing on it and I hit this riff; this little chord pattern that we would know as 'Free Fallin.' But I had a couple notes more in the riff. And Jeff looked up and said, 'Oh, that’s good. Can you leave out that last chord there and see what it does?'"

"And when I did that, it made this nice round of chords. And so I was just trying really to make Jeff smile as I was ad-libbing these words," Petty revealed.

"You know, 'She’s a good girl / Loves her mama / Loves Jesus and America too.' And Jeff smiled. I kept going. And I got right up to the chorus bit and I didn’t know what to sing, and he said [in a British accent] 'Free Fallin.'' And I tried to sing it, but I couldn’t get 'Free Fallin’' to fit into the line. So I just sang 'Free...' And then in the next line I sang 'Free Fallin.'' And then he perked up and said, 'That’s good. That’s great! But take your voice up an octave when you do it, when you go to the chorus.' And, bang, there it was: 'Free Fallin.'' I was very excited. I loved the song," the singer added.

Of course, the rest of the world ended up loving the song, too (not to mention the music video, which was a mainstay on MTV for years). Whether listeners identified with the "bad boy" singing about leaving his girlfriend or the jilted "good girl" herself, the chorus embodied that universal emotion so many people feel at the end of a relationship.

The enduring popularity of "Free Fallin'" was a huge contributor to the fact that Full Moon Fever ended up being certified five times platinum in 2000 for achieving a total of five million sales since its release. Nearly 40 years later, people are still listening: At the time of this writing, "Free Fallin'" has been streamed 914,104,192 on Spotify alone.

When it comes to parenting, Zara is as down-to-earth as they come. She previously spoke about how she and Mike, 47, are instilling their "values" in their children and the "incredible" journey of motherhood.

"Every day there is a different dilemma or problem, but it is incredible and I do look at myself differently," Zara said during an interview with Bella Magazine in July 2025. "My personality is coming out in the kids and there are some parts that you love and some that you don't like. And obviously some of Mike's as well. There is never a dull moment."

Even if you're not there, chances are you've seen some of the highlights on YouTube and other social platforms. Among the high-profile artists who showcased their talents on Friday, April 11 was Teddy Swims.

The red-hot singer-songwriter, 33, brought the expected hits and even crooned a few classics by some other big names. After all, Swims welcomed multiple guest-performers into the action last night...

One surprise rocker who jumped on stage was the one and only David Lee Roth. He and Swims proceeded to belt out Van Halen's iconic song "Jump" to the massive Coachella crowd before them.

With Coachella celebrating a big milestone this year, so it’s only right to take a look back at where it all started. The famous desert music festival kicked off its 25th year Friday with quite the lineup. This year’s major performers include Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieberand Karol G, among many, many others, and will span two weekends — April 10-13 and April 17-19.

More and more, parents and grandparents are embracing the power of words with children. It's a long way away—and a welcome departure, if you ask us—from the whole "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" idea from back in the day.

"The words we choose to encourage our kids are powerful," says Dr. Brittney Pearson, PhD,a licensed psychologist with Thriveworks. "Therefore, we must choose them wisely and with intention. In the short term, our words can provide feedback on a child’s view of their abilities and intelligence.  In the long term, these words can set the foundation for a child's identity and self-worth."

Another child psychologist echoes these sentiments.

"Words are important because language becomes internalized in kids," adds Dr. Cheung “William” Tsang, PsyD, a neuropsychologist with Hackensack University Medical Center. "The way a parent speaks to a child eventually becomes how a child talks to themselves."

In fact, you may notice that your inner critic has the same voice as your mom or dad—that's common.

"In the short term, words shape behavior and emotional reactions," Dr. Tsang says. "Over time, they shape self-concept, motivation and how a child responds to successes, challenges and failures." 

It's a lot of pressure, and no parent or grandparent gets it right 100% of the time. Child psychologists aren't suggesting anyone strive for perfection (an impossible standard). Yet, knowing the pitfalls of certain common phrases can help you choose wiser words. To that end, three psychologists agree that it's best to avoid this one common phrase with kids, and it might be a surprising one to you.

The #1 Phrase To Avoid With Kids, According to 3 Child Psychologists

Even though it might be a surprising one—because maybe your parents or teachers told you this growing up and you thought it was motivational—child psychologists don't recommend this phrase for kids: "The phrase 'practice makes perfect'... can have an unintended, potentially harmful impact on a child’s mental well-being," Dr. Pearson says

Unintended is a keyword. She knows parents aren't purposefully causing harm by using this phrase.

"The intention behind the phrase 'practice makes perfect' is well-meaning," she concedes. "Parents might use this phrase to encourage discipline and persistence, especially when they notice their child facing a challenging subject in school or a task."

Still, the consequences can be real and long-lasting.

"In the immediate moment, 'practice makes perfect' sets an impossible standard," Dr. Amy Kincaid Todey, PhD, a child psychologist with Todey Psychology, explains. "Perfection doesn't exist… not in soccer, not in music, not in math, not in relationships, not in life."

Raise your hand if you needed to hear that today. Dr. Tsang doesn't think "practice makes perfect" is inherently harmful on its own, but how it lands matters—and he agrees with Dr. Todey that it can often land in the wrong places.

"If 'perfect' becomes the goal, kids may feel frustrated or discouraged when learning is messy, which it almost always is," he notes. "It can shift attention away from the process and toward the outcome."

When kids believe the goal is perfection, they start avoiding challenges because if you never try the hard thing, you never have to fail at it. Dr. Todey says kids may start avoiding challenges because of this.

"In the short term, this can look like a child who suddenly doesn't want to go to soccer anymore, refuses to try the harder book or who erases their drawing so many times the paper tears," she explains. "They are not being difficult. They are managing fear."

She shares that children can start to associate their self-worth with perfection. They might think, "If I am not perfect, then I am nothing."

“This sets a foundation of low self-esteem and conditional self-worth," Dr. Pearson adds. "It can also lead to burnout due to chronic stress associated with perfectionism, a fear of failure and a fixed mindset where the child believes that mistakes are a sign of incompetence."

7 Other Phrases To Avoid Using With Kids 1. "You're so smart"

"You're so smart" is another well-meaning phrase that can have an unintended negative effect on kids.

"This phrase reinforces a fixed mindset and views intelligence as an innate trait," Dr. Pearson explains.

Dr. Todey agrees, saying kids can start to make "smart" their identity and want to protect it at all costs.

"Making a mistake becomes threatening, and they may begin to worry: 'What if this proves I'm not actually smart?'" she shares. "Rather than risk that conclusion, many children begin avoiding challenges, choosing easier tasks where success is guaranteed."

2. "It's OK—I wasn’t good at that either"

This one is so often said when a child is struggling with a subject, like math or science.

"This phrase does not foster a growth mindset and reinforces that skills are innate rather than learned," Dr. Pearson says.

3. "Why did you do that?"

Dr. Todey notes this one often comes out when a child makes a mistake or questionable choice.

"It feels reasonable because we want to understand," she states. "But to a child's ear, especially when asked with any hint of frustration or disbelief, 'Why did you do that?' lands as judgment, not curiosity."

4. "That's not a big deal"

Dr. Todey says parents and grandparents often use this phrase as a way to comfort kids, but it can have a different effect.

"When a child is upset about something that seems minor to an adult—such as a friend didn't sit with them at lunch—dismissing it with 'that's not a big deal'... sends a message about their inner world," she notes.

The psychologist says children hear this phrase (and its evil twin, "You're too sensitive/dramatic") as, "Your feelings are wrong or you shouldn't feel this way.”

5. "That's easy"

A task may be easy to you, but don't underestimate its difficulty level for a child (or the impact of this phrase.

"'That’s easy' can make kids feel inadequate if it doesn’t feel easy to them," Dr. Tsang explains. "It may discourage them from expressing difficulty."

6. "If you work harder, you will do better"

Honestly? Even adults can find "just work harder" incredibly frustrating, so it's unsurprising that kids do, too.

"This implies failure is from a lack of effort, potentially leading a child to question their competence," Dr. Pearson reveals. "This phrase also neglects effective problem-solving."

7.  "Because I said so"

Real talk: "Every parent has said this," Dr. Todey notes. "It comes out at the end of a long day when we are exhausted from responding to our kids’ constant questioning. It's understandable."

But the problem?

"As a regular response, 'Because I said so' communicates that authority is the reason for everything, and that questions are unwelcome," she explains.

She adds that, over time, it can foster resentment and erode the sense that the parent-child relationship involves mutual respect.

5 Better Alternative Phrases To Say to Kids1. "I noticed how hard you worked on that"

Dr. Todey loves that this phrase cultivates a growth mindset by praising the effort rather than the outcome or innate ability.

"'I noticed' is also important," she shares. "It signals that you are paying attention—that your child's process matters to you, not just their results. This simple observation communicates volumes about your values as a parent. We care about the work, not just the win."

2. "It's OK to make mistakes—that's how we learn"

This one is a much-needed antidote to the glorification of perfection and so much more.

"This phrase does several things at once," Dr. Todey explains. "It normalizes error. It reframes mistakes as information rather than indictment."

She shares that the use of the word "we" is intentional, and it matters more than meets the eye.

"When parents use 'we' language around struggle and learning, it signals solidarity," the psychologist says. "You are not above the process. You make mistakes too. You are in this with your child. That is profoundly reassuring to a young person who is watching you for cues about how to be human."

3. "Practice makes progress"

Child psychologists enthusiastically suggest this one over "Practice makes perfect."

"Using this phrase places focus on the mastery of a skill and allows for healthy reflection on personal growth and progress," Dr. Pearson says.

Dr. Tsang likes that this one pivots a kid's focus from the outcome to problem-solving.

"It helps kids to shift away from being stuck on the fear of failure and toward tolerating disappointment, building flexibility and developing agency to try again," Dr. Tsang states.

Dr. Todey suggests using this one when a child is upset, excited, confused or struggling to articulate something. She calls it an invitation and "one of the most powerful tools a parent has."

"It communicates, 'You are not too much. Your inner world is worth my time. I am here, and I am listening,'" she says.

She notes that this phrase builds a relationship in which kids come to you with hard things, not just the easy ones.

"That foundation, built through thousands of small moments of genuine curiosity, is what makes it possible for your child to come to you at 15 with something difficult, because they learned at 6 that you could handle what they felt," she states.

A new item at Trader Joe's is quickly becoming a fan favorite, although not everybody is rushing to get their hands on the latest release. The store recently introduced BBQ-flavored potato chips, and some fans are wondering what took them so long.

The new BBQ potato chips at Trader Joe's have been popping up on social media and Reddit in the past week or so. On April 7, the Trader Joe's Treasure Hunt Instagram page shared a first look at them, and one follower commented, "I tried these today and they were so good."

Another follower concurred. "These are soooo good."

Trader Joe's describes the new BBQ potato chips as having a "truly bold and full-flavored suite of BBQ sauce-inspired seasonings, which includes a mix of molasses, onion, and garlic, and even a touch of cinnamon and clove."

The retailer adds that the "profoundly tasty Chip" pairs well with "grilled fare of all sorts," and is the perfect chip to dunk "dependably into creamy dips."

The new chips come in a 10-ounce bag and are priced at $2.99.

The reactions from potential customers have been somewhat mixed in these early days.

The new BBQ chip offering has some Trader Joe's fans feeling especially eager to get a hold of the Patio Chips and Carolina Gold Potato Chips. Both are expected to return closer to summertime, but are not available right now.

Others are rallying for other flavor profiles. Specifically, customers want to get a salt and vinegar flavor variation, and seem less intrigued by the BBQ offering.

A few people pointed out that Trader Joe's tried a BBQ-flavored potato chip quite a while ago, but apparently, the flavoring was completely different.

One customer on Reddit gushed, "Omg finally," after learning of the new chip option.

A less impressed customer wrote, "I tried these. They're okay. They tasted like any other generic brand of BBQ chips. Nothing special about the taste or texture."

Another Redditor declared, "These might be the best BBQ chips since Sprouts discontinued their classic BBQ chips many years ago. These taste like chips made in the 1980s."

Someone else on Reddit admitted, "My store taste tested these today. They are OK, but I'm holding out for the Carolina golds!"

An impressed Trader Joe's customer shared, "Ugh these are soo good. BBQ chips are my fave and I finished this bag in two days (oink!) I hope these become a regular item."

According to another pleased customer, the Trader Joe's BBQ potato chips are "Just a nice clean and simple bbq chip," noting they thought the chips were "great."

Carl Franklin, the beloved '90s actor and director, turns 77 years old today.

As Joseph Duggar's sexual assault case continues to make headlines, his cousin Amy Duggar King is sharing a rather bold opinion about what she believes is happening to his wife Kendra Duggar behind closed doors.

In an Instagram video shared on Saturday, April 11, Amy laid out what she thinks the Duggar family is saying to Kendra, 27, in the wake of her 31-year-old husband’s arrest, framing it as her opinion. The picture she paints is one of financial incentives wrapped in religious pressure.

Amy’s comments come as Joseph's legal situation remains serious. The 31-year-old was arrested on March 18 and charged with Lewd and Lascivious Behavior involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Two days later, he and Kendra were hit with separate child endangerment charges. Joseph posted a $600,000 bond following his first court appearance on March 31, with conditions including no contact with the alleged victim and no unsupervised contact with minors. His next court date is set for April 20.

In a jail call obtained by TMZ, Kendra told Joseph that despite the family's "disappointment," their support remains. "Just know everybody loves you, even if they're disappointed," she said.

Amy's final message to Kendra? "Real support doesn't require silence.”

From Variety and The Hollywood Reporter to The Daily Beast and Time, the reviews are as scattered as a Gen Z group chat at 2 a.m. You have some saying the Emmy-winning series is “better than ever” and Zendaya is "dazzling," with others questioning its relevance and hurling low-blow descriptors like “gross,” “unhinged,” and “disaster.”

Euphoria fans have been waiting breathlessly for the show to return, following delays from WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The series, whose debut in 2019 became a generation-defining cultural force, with its narrative about a group of toxic teenagers navigating love, addition, and identity in a haze of neon-lit chaos, was considered must-see TV. And even though its third season isn’t hitting widely with critics, all the elements that made it the second most-watched show on HBO are still here.

Their worlds are bigger, and their storylines are bleeding out across the seedy underbelly of the West Coast. It's either the perfect recipe for the chaos, collapse, and escalation we live for with Euphoria, or a forumula for complete and total implosion. Either way, we're tuning in.

Prince Harry is being sued for defamation by Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in honor of his mother, Princess Diana. 

Sentebale’s Board of Trustees and Executive Director confirmed they had "commenced legal proceedings" against Prince Harry, 41, and a former trustee of the charity, Mark Dyer, in a statement on April 10. 

"The charity seeks the court’s intervention, protection, and restitution following a coordinated adverse media campaign conducted since 25 March 2025 that has caused operational disruption and reputational harm to the charity, its leadership, and its strategic partners," read the statement from Sentebale. "The proceedings have been brought against Prince Harry and Mark Dyer, identified through evidence as the architects of that adverse media campaign, which has had significant viral impact and triggered an onslaught of cyber-bullying directed at the charity and its leadership."

Court records showed the case was filed in the London High Court on March 24, Reuters reported. The charge is listed as "defamation - libel and slander."

A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said he and Dyer deny any wrongdoing and "categorically reject these offensive and damaging claims."

"It is extraordinary that charitable funds are now being used to pursue legal action against the very people who built and supported the organisation for nearly two decades, rather than being directed to the communities the charity was ​created to serve," the ​spokesperson said in a ⁠statement, per Reuters.

Harry, the youngest son of King Charles, founded Sentebale in 2006, nine years after Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris at age 36, with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. The organization’s name means "forget-me-not" in the local language of Lesotho in Southern Africa and helps young people with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. Diana famously used her platform to spread awareness and stop misinformation about the disease.

Harry served as a patron within the organization until he resigned in March 2025, along with Prince Seeiso and several trustees, after a public dispute with Sentebale’s chair of ⁠the board, Sophie Chandauka. The rift centered around disagreements about fundraising strategies.

At the time of their relationship fizzling, Chandauka reported the Duke of Sussex and the trustees to Britain's charity regulator over alleged bullying and harassment. Harry called the situation "heartbreaking" at the time, claiming "blatant lies hurt those who have ⁠invested decades" ​in supporting the children in Southern Africa.

The U.K. Charity Commission ​reported in August 2025 that it had found no evidence of bullying or “overreach,” per the Charity Commission’s website, but noted “all the charity’s then trustees contributed” to the dispute due to a lack of defined roles. 

In response to the report, Chandauka said, “I appreciate the Charity Commission for its conclusions, which confirm the governance concerns I raised privately in February 2025. The experience was intense, and it became a test of our strategic clarity and operational resilience."

Prince Harry released his own statement at the time, acknowledging there were “no findings of wrongdoing” and “no evidence of widespread bullying, harassment, or misogyny,” but he claimed there were shortcomings in the investigation.

"Despite all that, their report falls troublingly short in many regards, primarily the fact that the consequences of the current Chair’s actions will not be borne by her, but by the children who rely on Sentebale’s support," a spokesperson for the British royal said at the time. "Sentebale has been a deeply personal and transformative mission for Prince Harry, established to serve some of the most vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana. For 19 years, its dedicated staff and steadfast supporters have provided vital care to over 100,000 young people across southern Africa, including young people living with HIV/AIDS and those facing mental health challenges. As custodians of this once brilliant charity, Prince Seeiso, Prince Harry and the former Board of Trustees helped grow Sentebale from the seed of an idea to — like its namesake — a flowering force for good.”

In celebration of The Godfather's 45th anniversary, members of the cast, includingAl Pacino, Robert Duvall, and James Caan, came together to share insight about the film in a 2017 interview with TODAY. "Because it's somewhat in the conscious life. It's referred to a lot. It's so sort of everpresent," said Pacino, now 85, during the TODAY interview.

"The truth of the matter is, and this may never happen again, and it's all really due to Francis. I mean, he put together a crew that all became the top of their, you know, before they were known, whether it be [cinematographer] Gordy Willis, [editor] Walter Murch, etc.," said Cann, who died in 2022 at the age of 82.

The "Grande Dame" is officially back.

Bravo confirmed the cast for The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 11 on April 10, and the biggest headline is the full-time return of Karen Huger following her time behind bars for a DUI conviction.

Huger, 62, was sentenced to two years in prison with one year suspended after being found guilty of DUI charges connected to a solo crash in Potomac, Maryland in March 2024. She was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on Sept. 2, 2025 and was notably absent from Season 10 of the series.

Her return was teased when she appeared in a mid-season trailer sitting down for a post-prison interview with Andy Cohen, but now it's confirmed: the "Grande Dame" is a full-time Housewife once again.

Robyn Dixon Returns as a 'Friend'

Huger isn't the only OG making a comeback. Robyn Dixon, who has been part of the franchise since Season 1, is returning as a "Friend of the Housewives" after sitting out Season 10.

The rest of the Season 11 cast includes returning Housewives Gizelle Bryant, Wendy Osefo, Ashley Darby, Tia Glover and Stacey Rusch. On the way out are Angel Massie, Keiarna Stewart and Jassi Harris, who will not be returning for the new season.

Fans have been eager to see how Huger addresses her legal troubles on camera. During her DUI sentencing, prosecutors labeled her a repeat offender, citing three previous alcohol-related traffic cases between 2006 and 2011. She was also ordered to pay $2,900 in fines, complete five years of probation and could not drive for one year.

In court, Huger acknowledged responsibility and expressed gratitude that no one was harmed in the crash. Her sit-down with Cohen during the Season 10 reunion gave viewers a first look at how she's processing the experience, but Season 11 will be the first time audiences see her navigate daily life after prison while cameras are rolling.

No premiere date has been announced for Season 11, but filming is expected to be underway soon.

It's been just a few short months since Dancing With the Stars judge Derek Hough and his wife, Hayley Erbert, welcomed their first child, Everley Capri Hough. Since that day, the pair have been reveling in parenthood, doting on their tiny daughter and sharing adorable photos and videos. Erbert is definitely soaking in all the warm-and-fuzzy feelings that come with becoming a parent. However, she's also proven that her dancing prowess and self-care needs are stronger than ever. Hough posted a video showing him and Erbert working out in Alo shock suits. "Wifey has me trying some new things," he wrote.

Erbert also turned up at one of the Savannah Banana games to dance, blowing everyone away with her strength and flexibility so soon after giving birth.

For many pet owners, the idea of giving up a pet is unthinkable. For some, their fur babies are like their children, and for others, they have become part of the family. For this reason, aside from situations where a cat or dog becomes threatening, there are many emotional reactions to news that someone has gotten rid of or rehomed their pet. Therefore, it's not surprising that Shazam! actress Meagan Good was met with some strong feelings from fans after revealing the reason she rehomed her cat.

Good sat down with Jonica Booth on the Picture This podcast, and was asked about something she thought she couldn't live without, before realizing she could.

"My cat," she replied hesitantly. "Cause I had to get rid of my little cat. His name is Bam Bam."

"The pups came with Jonathan [Majors]," she continued, referring to her husband. "So there was two pups, and then we got a third one. And by the third one, Bam Bam was real upset, and Bam Bam started using the bathroom in the bed."

She admitted that she struggled with the decision and really didn't want to lose him. But the third puppy "pushed him off the edge."

"So you chose the puppy over Bam Bam," Booth stated.

"I chose the man," Good responded. Several fans expressed their disappointment at her choice in the comments.

"Giving up your cat for a man is wild...... and messed up," commented one YouTuber.

"Weird how you abandoned your long cat for a dog," another wrote. "That’s not human at all. Which I don’t know what’s worse than having that “man”. Disgusting."

However, Good also had her defenders, who chimed in.

"It’s a cat not a child," one of her fans responded. "And it was HER CAT NOT YOUR CAT. she do whatever she wants with it. And that man is her husband. Social media made yall feel like yall can tell celebrities what they can and can’t do with their personal life. I’m so glad Meagan doesn’t listen to yall crazy self. Yall need a life outside of social media."

One of Good's fan pages previously shared an Instagram Reel of the actress showing off Bam Bam, a Munchkin and Sphynx mix, when he was a three-and-a-half-month-old kitten. He could also be seen playfully running around Good's apartment in several 2023 Instagram videos.

While most Bruce Springsteen fans wouldn't consider his music to be scary, one of his tracks recently took home the title of a "truly terrifying" song.

In October 2025, Rolling Stone magazine released a list of "25 songs that are truly terrifying." The list included spooky songs like Leonard Cohen's “Avalanche” from 1971, The Doors' 1967 hit, "The End," “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” byPink Floyd, “I Love the Dead” by Alice Cooper, "Day of the Lords" by Joy Division from 1979, Slayer's "Dead Skin Mask," and Sufjan Stevens' 2005 classic, “John Wayne Gacy, Jr.”

Springsteen opened up about writing the song in the persona of Starkweather during a 2005 episode of VH1 Storytellers. He noted that the 1982 song is an example of his "narrative songwriting." He also noted that the stark, dark lyrics juxtapose the light, almost childlike quality to the music.

"It's spooky because I'm singing in the voice of the dead. The music is pretty childlike and mystical," said Springsteen while on stage before an audience.

In addition, he said that he was influenced by the 1955 thriller, TheNight of the Hunter, while writing "Nebraska."

"I don't know if you're familiar with the Robert Mitchum film Night of the Hunter, which is kind of this horror story told from a child's perspective. And I was interested in an oral projection of that idea," said the "Born in the U.S.A." singer.

He also said he has to have something in common with the characters in his songs, "no matter who they are or what they did."

"So 'Nebraska' is a song written with the premise that everyone knows what it's like to be condemned. Which they do, of course," said the musician, now 76.

In Brazil, the secret to a better cup is much simpler and has nothing to do with specialty equipment. Instead, it comes down to a technique that transforms the coffee's flavor from the very first sip.

That method is called cafezinho, which translates to "little coffee," but culturally means much more than just a tiny cup of Joe. In Brazil, cafezinho is part of everyday life, often offered to guests as a gesture of hospitality and connection rather than just a caffeine boost.

Unlike typical American coffee habits, cafezinho is traditionally brewed with sugar added during the brewing process rather than stirred in afterward. That small change allows the sugar to integrate into the coffee as it brews, creating a smoother and slightly caramelized flavor profile.

Curious about whether the world's largest coffee-producing country's favorite brewing method is one we're missing out on, I decided to try making cafezinho at home. What I found was a method that feels less like a complicated coffee hack and more like a practical way to make a better cup with tools most people already have in their kitchen.

What Is the Brazilian Way To Make Coffee 10x Better?

Brazil's cafezinho is known for being small, strong and sweet. It's typically served in espresso-style cups and consumed throughout the day rather than just in the morning.

The biggest difference between cafezinho and standard drip coffee is how it's brewed. Instead of adding sugar after brewing, the sugar is added directly to the water before or during the brewing process. This allows the sweetness to become part of the extraction rather than just sitting on top of the flavor. The result is a cup that many describe as robust, sweet and flavorful, that's surprisingly balanced despite its strength.

Cafezinho also carries cultural significance. In Brazil, offering someone coffee is often seen as a sign of welcome and conversation, making it as much a social ritual as a beverage.

Ingredients Needed for Cafezinho

One of the most appealing things about making cafezinho is that it requires only a few simple ingredients. To try it myself, I used finely ground coffee, water and sugar, along with a small saucepan and a reusable metal coffee filter.

Traditional versions typically used a cloth filter, but many home cooks use paper filters or a mesh strainer. Recipes online vary, but for my test, I found that about one cup of water, two teaspoons of sugar and one heaping tablespoon of coffee made a strong yet well-balanced cup. The beauty of the method is its flexibility, allowing you to adjust the ratios to suit how sweet or strong you prefer your coffee.

Cafezinho is often stronger than standard American coffee, which helps it retain flavor despite its sweetness.

How To Make Cafezinho

To make my cafezinho, I started by heating water and sugar together in a small saucepan until the mixture began to simmer. When it just reached a boil, and the sugar had completely dissolved, I removed the pan from the burner.

Next, I stirred in the coffee grounds and covered the pot with a lid. The coffee brews as it steeps in the covered pot for about five minutes.

Placing a reusable coffee filter into a cup, I carefully strained the coffee to remove the grounds, making sure to allow all the liquid to drain out.

Finally, I poured the finished coffee into small cups to serve.

What I Noticed After Trying Cafezinho

What surprised me most was how quickly the process came together. In just a few minutes, I had a cup that tasted noticeably smoother and slightly richer than my usual drip coffee, even though I used the same beans I normally do.

The biggest difference was how integrated the sweetness felt. Instead of tasting like sugar had been added to mask the bitterness, the flavor felt integrated into the coffee itself. There was no bitterness at all, and the boldness of the espresso grind I used came through clearly, creating a deep, rich, delicious cup of coffee.

Like many traditional recipes, cafezinho varies from household to household.

Some adjustments you can try:

• Adjust sugar levels
• Use brown or raw sugar instead of white

• Pair it with rich dark chocolate

Online discussions about cafezinho also show how flexible the method can be. One coffee drinker on Reddit described it as a cultural staple served in small cups and often brewed in batches to share throughout the day.

That flexibility is part of what makes cafezinho approachable. You don't need special equipment or hard-to-find ingredients. Just a slightly different brewing approach.

After trying it myself, the biggest takeaway wasn't that this would replace my everyday morning coffee routine. Instead, it feels like an easy way to add something special when entertaining or when you just want a small, sweet cup that feels warm and extra satisfying.

Sometimes improving your coffee experience doesn't mean buying better gear. Sometimes it just means learning from another culture's traditions.
