Best-Selling Author’s Iconic Novel Ranked Among ‘Best Books’ of All Time'

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 9:10pm

It's hard to name a novel that has captured the absurdity of war quite like Catch-22.

The iconic work by Joseph Heller has been ranked among the "best books of all time" on Goodreads, based on votes from readers. The recognition highlights the novel's lasting relevance and its impact as one of the most influential works of 20th-century literature.

First published in 1961, Catch-22 follows Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier stationed in the Mediterranean during World War II. As Yossarian tries to maintain his sanity amid the chaos of war, he is confronted by a bureaucratic paradox known as “Catch-22," a rule that makes it impossible to escape dangerous missions. The novel's nonlinear structure and dark humor underscore its central critique of authority, logic and the absurd nature of war.

The book came to Heller seemingly out of thin air in a moment of what can only be described as divine inspiration.

"I was lying in bed in my four-room apartment on the West Side when suddenly this line came to me: 'It was love at first sight. The first time he saw the chaplain, Someone fell madly in love with him.' I didn't have the name Yossarian," Heller told The Paris Review. "The chaplain wasn't necessarily an army chaplain—he could have been a prison chaplain. But as soon as the opening sentence was available, the book began to evolve clearly in my mind—even most of the particulars . . . the tone, the form, many of the characters, including some I eventually couldn't use."

Heller's epiphany took place in only an hour and a half. "It got me so excited that I did what the cliché says you’re supposed to do: I jumped out of bed and paced the floor. That morning I went to my job at the advertising agency and wrote out the first chapter in longhand. Before the end of the week I had typed it out and sent it to Candida Donadio, my agent. One year later, after much planning, I began chapter two."

Praised for its biting satire and unforgettable characters, the book introduced a phrase that has since entered everyday language. Its exploration of power, survival and individual resistance continues to resonate with readers across generations.

The novel was adapted into the film Catch-22, directed by Mike Nichols and featuring a cast that included Alan Arkin. While the film took on the challenge of translating the book's complex narrative and tone, it remains a notable interpretation that brought Heller's story to a wider audience.

More than six decades after its release, Catch-22 remains a cornerstone of modern literature, one that continues to challenge, entertain and provoke thought.

With its inclusion in Goodreads' ranking, the novel's legacy is once again reaffirmed as a timeless and essential read.

‘LA Ink’ Star Announces Exciting Update After Passion Project Draws Attention

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 9:05pm

Kat Von D is keeping the momentum going following the success of her passion project, Black Tulip Field.

The gothic-inspired floral attraction, located at the LA Ink star’s historic 1874 Second Empire-style home in Vevay, Indiana, has captured widespread attention, drawing a large number of visitors to the small town.

As the black tulip season came to a close, the Mexican-born tattoo artist delivered a special message to the visitors and fans who came out to experience it firsthand.

“Our beautiful tulip season is officially over and my black tulip field is closed for the season, but I wanted to take a moment just to say thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed the flowers and brought life into our very small town,” she said in an Instagram post.

Moreover, she expressed how the annual event helps boost their community of around 12,000 people.

“Having this amount of love and support coming through, even if it's just once a year, really helps our community,” the reality star shared. “I talked to a lot of restaurant owners and the businesses and stores around our town and said that the energy was amazing. You guys all came out and supported and it was actually meaningful.”

As she continued to express her gratitude for everyone who showed their interest and appreciation for her passion project, despite it just being a “little black tulip field with not a lot of smoke and mirrors or gimmick stuff,” she said it means the world to her.

With the success of Kat Von D’s passion project, she has hinted at what visitors and fans can look forward to next year.

“I have some really cool ideas for how to make the experience even more fun,” she teased fans, adding, “I hope you guys still come back and see them again next year.”

The field, with approximately 15,000 "Queen of the Night" tulips, was in full bloom from early to mid-April and was open to the public during that time.

The renowned tattoo artist and beauty mogul, who is also an avid gardener, started the Black Tulip Field in November 2023, with its first public bloom taking place in April 2024.

According to Local 12, this will be the second time since 2023 that Vevay has earned the USA Today Readers’ Choice Award for Best Small Town in the Midwest, finishing ahead of 19 others.

Key ‘Will Trent’ Cast Member Killed Off in Painful Shakeup

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 9:05pm

Rumors had been swirling about a death on Will Trent, but the person everyone suspected might die was Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen). That turned out to not be the case. Rather, it was Will’s (Ramón Rodríguez) boss Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn), who met her demise.

Amanda had been near death previously. She was shot in the Season 3 finale, protecting Angie during a hostage situation at the GBI, but she pulled through with that, although she walked with a cane. But this time around, the grim reaper was not to be denied.

In "The Blank Expanse of Nothing" episode, it turned out that Amanda uncovered FBI warnings about James Ulster's (Greg Germann) daughter Adelaide Trevens (Mallory Jansen) and a mysterious “Commander” figure linked to Will.

In a previous episode, Will had met up with a young man connected to Adelaide, who was known as The Commander, and in this episode, Amanda found him and tailed him, hoping it would help lead her to clues about Will’s Uncle Antonio’s (John Ortiz) location. But the tables were turned on her, and she was surprised by an unseen assailant.

Meanwhile, Adelaide invited Will to meet her at a bar, and she told him that she left him a gift around the corner. The gift was Amanda’s dead body. She had been stabbed to death.

In an interview with Variety, series showrunners Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen and Karine Rosenthal told the outlet that Amanda’s death “sets off a chain of events that is going to take us to the end of the season.”

“Amanda has been the character who has protected Will for as long as she has known him,” Rosenthal said. “So this gives us the opportunity for a completely new dynamic in the GBI, because her replacement will not have that same relationship with Will. Her death had the most impact on the most amount of characters. It really sets everybody reeling from this enormous loss. So, it’s such a reset for our characters in a way that is painful but exciting for Season 5.”

Heldens added that this might not be the last time we see Amanda. There is always the possibility of a flashback or a fantasy in Will’s mind.

“That’s always a little of a comfort that we have a mechanism by which we could bring people back if Will needs to work something out,” Heldens said.

Will Trent airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Streams next day on Hulu.

Jackie Tohn Teases a ‘Whole New Journey’ for Esther in ‘Nobody Wants This’ Season 3 (Exclusive)

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 9:00pm

Actress and musician Jackie Tohn teased what's coming in Nobody Wants This Season 3 and shared additional insights into other projects and partnerships she currently has in the works.

Season 3 of the fan-favorite Netflix show is officially in production, and although there's currently no confirmed release date, fans are eager to see what happens next, especially for Tohn's character, Esther. The Season 2 finale of Nobody Wants Thisrevealed that Esther and her husband, Sasha (Timothy Simons) are taking a break, which means a major narrative shift for both characters.

Of the upcoming season, Tohn shared, "A lot of our Season 3 guest stars were announced, so we're going to have Sarah Silverman on the show this season. We're going to have Andrew Rannells on the show this season. Erin Foster herself will be guesting. So that's really exciting."

"In Season 2, Esther was really given the opportunity to, I don't know, be a lot more multidimensional than she was in Season 1...But at the end of Season 2, she and Sasha go on this break, so Season 3 is just going to be a whole new journey for her, you know? She's trying to figure out who she is outside of being a wife and a mother," Tohn said.

Tohn also spoke very highly of her Nobody Wants This castmates.

"They're such dreams," she said. "I'm just in a really lucky place where I'm doing—I have little chills, and I don't know if it's braggadocious, so it makes me a little nervous to say—but to get to work on things and with people that you want to work with and be around, as a person who truly didn't get to do that for the majority of my career. I was just hustling and traveling everywhere and had a guitar on my back and just got any gig I could get."

Among the projects Tohn is enthusiastic about is her current partnership with Dawn, particularly highlighting Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray and its ability to clean even daunting, stuck-on messes.

Jackie Tohn at a Dawn event holding Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray.

Dawn

About the collaboration, Tohn said, "I'm so excited about my partnership with Dawn. I only partner with companies that I actually utilize, and I've been a Dawn girly forever. Somehow, and this is embarrassing, I was sleeping on Powerwash. I was just using Dawn dish soap for everything."

Tohn continued, "When we were talking about maybe working together, I was talking to my reps, and I was like, I'm already in; I already use Dawn...I love these guys, and I love the product, so it was kind of a no-brainer."

Tohn said that she especially finds the product useful when making kugel, including sweet noodle kugel, which she often makes for Jewish holidays.

"That's a three-day soak. It's not a 24 hour soak. That's like, you do the 24 hours, then you scrub it, then you do it again. And I recently made a kugel. I do the Dawn Powerwash; I feel like the heroine in a movie when you spray it. And I know you're supposed to do one long spray, because I was taught by people very high up at Dawn, if you don't mind," Tohn joked.

She went on, "So you don't do little weird spritzes. You do a full nice long spray all across the kugel pan—also known as a lasagna pan—and, truly, you just wait. And then when all the little suds go away, you rinse it, and you're like, 'How? How did that just go away?'"

For Tohn, both her partnership with Dawn and her upcoming season of Nobody Wants This reflect the current place she's in.

Tohn said, "To be in a place where I get to work with these incredible people and work with this incredible brand, it's just like, can I say it feels very good and beats the alternative?"

1998 No. 1 Hit Ranked 'Best Power Ballad of All Time' Was Iconic Rock Band's Bestselling Single Ever

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 8:58pm

Considering Aerosmith is one of the most successful and popular rock bands in history, one might assume that at least a few of their hit songs went all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts. Interestingly, though, that's not the case: Aerosmith has only had one #1 single over the course of their decades-long career, and it didn't come along until 1998. Not only that, but the tune wasn't even written for them in the first place.

Released in 1998, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" was the theme song for the sci-fi blockbuster Armageddon, starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis and, of course, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler. The sweeping, emotional ballad debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first Aerosmith song to achieve such a milestone, and it reigned supreme for four weeks.

Not bad for a song that was originally intended for somebody like...Celine Dion.

As legendary songwriter Diane Warren told Short List, she definitely wasn't thinking of Aerosmith when she wrote "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

“When I wrote it I thought it would end up being like Celine Dion or somebody like that,” she said, going on to explain that she was inspired to write the song by an interview with James Brolin where the actor admitted he doesn't like falling asleep because he worries about missing his wife, Barbara Streisand.

“I kept it in the back of my head and when that movie came round I thought, ‘You know, I’m gonna write this song because it could be about the end of the world — it could fit that storyline or it could fit this love story,’” Warren said.

Even if she originally had a very different type of voice in mind for "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," Warren ended up being pleasantly surprised by the Aerosmith version, particularly Tyler's delivery of the line: "Don’t want to close my eyes / I don’t want to fall asleep / ’Cause I’d miss you baby / And I don’t want to miss a thing"

“What was so cool about when Aerosmith did it, when Steven Tyler sang it, it became a different thing,” she said. “It’s so much cooler to hear someone like Steven Tyler – this gruff, macho rock star, this amazing tough guy — for him to say that lyric, it just brought a whole other dimension to it. I don’t think it would have been the same hit, or the same standard if it wasn’t for someone like Steven Tyler doing that song.”

Indeed, in the years since it was released, it seems fan affection for the song has only grown stronger. "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" has over one billion streams on Spotify alone and was ranked "Best Power Ballad Ever" by Classic Rock.

"It’s a poignant epic characterized by one of Steven Tyler’s most impassioned performances," raved the CR article. "He takes an essentially wimpy song and transforms it into one of soul-searing grandeur via some feral vocal pyrotechnics (‘Forever, forever… and E-E-E-EVER!’). Ms Warren — more at home with the likes of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston — must’ve been awestruck by this interpretation of her song. In literary terms, the Boys From Boston transformed a chaste romantic novel into a steamy bodice-ripper."

And that's how Aerosmith ended up with their very first #1.

Today's patios often serve multiple purposes: a quiet spot for morning meditation, a home office during the afternoon, and a social hub for evening gatherings. This multifunctional lifestyle requires flex furniture—pieces that can be easily moved, rearranged, and used for a variety of tasks. Whether you need a place to rest your feet after a long day, a makeshift table for a tray of drinks, or an extra seat for an unexpected guest, the right accent piece can make all the difference.

How Much Was a McDonald's Burger When It Debuted in April 1955?

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 8:30pm

An American staple in the same breath as baseball and apple pie, McDonald's has been serving up quick, affordable meals to burger lovers for decades. Whether it's a late-night stop, a road-trip essential or a cheat day at the tail end of a strict meal plan, the fast-food giant has built its reputation on convenience, speed, consistency and, most importantly, price.

But have you ever wondered just how affordable the fast-food giant was at the beginning? At a time when rising prices are top of mind for many, it's shocking to look back at an era before value menus and combo deals, when McDonald's was built on one simple idea: serving quality food fast and keeping it cheap. Here's a closer look at how it all started and how much a McDonald's burger cost in 1955 compared to today.

When Did McDonald's Open Its First Restaurant?

Allard One / Shutterstock.com

To the surprise of many, the answer might not be as straightforward as you think, and when you look it up, you'll often find different dates depending on the source. While McDonald's traces its earliest roots back to a single small California drive-in, the company we are familiar with today didn't actually take shape until the mid-1950s.

As the story goes, the original restaurant was reworked in 1948 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in California, when they introduced their streamlined "Speedee Service System," which helped define modern fast food. That said, 1955 is widely considered the official start of McDonald's as a national brand, when Ray Kroc opened the first franchised location and began building the foundation for the global chain we know today.

Where Was McDonald's First Restaurant?

Courtesy McDonald's

The earliest version of McDonald's, as most people recognize it today, traces back to San Bernardino, Calif. This is where brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald transformed their original drive-in into a streamlined operation built around speed, efficiency and consistency. It's here where the brothers laid the groundwork for what would become modern fast food.

A marvel of its time, the original location focused on a simplified menu and a faster service model, which immediately set it apart from traditional restaurants. And while that first site is no longer in operation, the original building has since been demolished, with the location in San Bernardino now marked by an unofficial museum and tribute site dedicated to McDonald's history. It remains a key part of McDonald's story as the root from which the global chain grew.

How Much Was a McDonald's Burger in 1955?

Like everything from the 1950s, fast-food prices are a far cry from what we see today. In 1955, a McDonald's hamburger cost a measly 15 cents, a price often cited as the standard from the earliest days of the modern franchise era. At the time, the menu featured just four items, built around keeping things simple, fast and affordable, with most items priced well under a dollar. A burger was 15 cents, a cheeseburger 19 cents, french fries 10 cents and a coffee 10 cents.

While 15 cents for a hamburger sounds almost unbelievable today, it reflected McDonald's original approach to fast food: high volume, low cost and speedy service. Compared to today's prices, it offers a clear view of how much the cost of a basic burger has changed over time.

Karolis Kavolelis / Shutterstock.com

How Much Was a McDonald's Meal in 1955?

Put together, even a simple “meal” at the time was incredibly inexpensive by today’s standards. A hamburger at 15 cents, fries at 10 cents and a coffee at 10 cents would bring a basic order to just 35 cents total. Even swapping in a cheeseburger instead would only push that up slightly to 39 cents, still well under what most people would consider the cost of a single item today, let alone a full meal.

Considering that customers at the time were turning to McDonald’s for an affordable, fast meal that was accessible to just about everyone, it’s easy to see how the fast-food giant experienced immense success driven by its extremely low prices. Unfortunately for those of us today, a basic meal is going to cost around $10 or more, a stark comparison to the prices the company was famously built on.

How Much Is a McDonald's Burger in 2026?

Unlike in 1955, fixed menu prices are a thing of the past. Depending on which McDonald's you visit and what city and state you're in, prices will vary. That said, in 2026, a basic hamburger typically ranges from $2 to $4, while a cheeseburger usually falls between $3 and $5, depending on the market. If you're in a big city, prices can be expected to be higher, and if you're ordering through an app like DoorDash or Uber Eats, you can also expect higher prices than ordering in-store.

While McDonald's is still considered an affordable fast-food option, it is a long way from its 15-cent-hamburger past. And while the fast food giant still has millions of loyal patrons worldwide, it's safe to say we've all felt the pressure of rising food prices, no matter which generation you come from.

What was once measured in cents is now a few dollars, putting a spotlight on just how much inflation and modern fast food pricing have reshaped one of McDonald's and the fast food industry's most iconic menu items.

1979 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Country Songs of All Time’ Became a Timeless Anthem of Forbidden Love

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 8:04pm

The 1972 soul, R&B classic “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right” has been covered numerous times throughout history. Notably, the slow-tempo ballad has been closely associated with Luther Ingram

But it was on April 14, 1979, when Barbara Mandrell’s version of the timeless classic and signature cheating song reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The tune also became a Top 10 single on the Adult Contemporary chart and was ranked at No. 156 on the 200 “Greatest Country Songs of All Time” by Rolling Stone Australia.

By the time Mandrell earned the chart triumph, she had already over a dozen charted singles to her name, with several in the Top 10. Some of those songs included “The Midnight Oil,” “Standing Room Only,” and “Sleeping Single In A Double Bed,” which served as her first No. 1 hit, making “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right” her second chart-topper.

A Crossover Success

Produced by Tom Collins, Mandrell’s rendition of “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right,” co-penned by Homer Banks, Carl Hampton, and Raymond Jackson, introduced the song to an entirely new audience. Unlike Ingram’s version, which topped the R&B chart for four weeks, Mandrell put a female country spin on the tune, swapping out a few of the lyrics to give a woman’s mistress perspective on a story about forbidden and adulterated love.

My friends tell me there's no future in loving a married man /If I can't see you when I want / I'll see you when I can,” the singer, 77, affectionately known as “The Princess of Steel,” sings, showing off her smooth and soft signature vocals on the song. “If loving you is wrong / I don't wanna be right (I don't wanna be right) / If loving you is wrong / I don't wanna be right (I don't wanna be right).”

Several Renditions

With so many versions throughout the years, it may come as a surprise that “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right” wasn’t originally meant for any of the stars that reimagined the classic. The tune was first written for the Chicago-based vocal group The Emotions, whose recording of the song was never released.

Mandrell wasn’t the only artist to put a female spin. Many others followed suit, including Millie Jackson, whose vocals on the song earned her two Grammy nominations. The Faces, Veda Brown, andRod Stewart are among many other artists from various genres  who channeled the hit.

Beloved New York Times Bestseller's Film Adaptation Just Revealed Its Cast and The Internet Has Thoughts

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 8:04pm

Emily Henry'sBeach Read is heading to the big screen, but the casting news has the internet divided.

After Patrick Schwarzeneggerannounced on Tuesday, April 14, that he will be playing Gus Everett in the film adaptation of Henry's beloved 2020 romance novel, the fans piped up.

The 32-year-old shared the news on Instagram alongside a tag to costar Phoebe Dynevor, who will be playing January Andrews opposite him. "I'm so excited for this!!!" Schwarzenegger wrote in his caption. "First — let me say thank you to @emilyhenrywrites for the opportunity!" He went on to add, "I will do everything possible to make the fans happy & proud and bring your brilliant writing to life."

For anyone unfamiliar with the source material, Beach Read follows two rival authors (January and Augustus) who find themselves renting neighboring beach houses over the summer. Stuck with writer's block, they make a bet to swap genres, and what starts as a creative challenge quickly turns into a slow-burn romance that built Henry a devoted readership. But now those readers have some feelings about who's been cast to bring it to life.

“Break a leg!! (Literally) (drop the role) (quit) (decline),” one fan harshly wrote.

Another wrote, “I don’t even mean this in a rude way but pls don’t do this.”

A third bluntly declared, “Ruined my favorite book.”

But Schwarzenegger's famous friends were quick to show support in the comments. Taylor Lautner posted "I LIKE THIS," while Rob Lowe's son Johnny added, "Is ur beach bod ready?"

And some fans of the book were equally enthusiastic, with one writing "CONGRATS KING, YOURE GOING TO CRUSH IT!!!!" and another adding, "Big win for the girls (i’m the girls)."

Beach Read is one of several Henry adaptations currently in the works, alongside Funny Story, Book Lovers, and Happy Place.

Amanda Batula Drags West Wilson After ‘Summer House’ Drunken Makeout—Then Writes ‘D—’ on His Forehead

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 8:00pm

Amanda Batula and West Wilson may be together now off-screen, but in the latest episode of Summer House, she was the one taking him to task for a drunken makeout with another woman in front of Ciara Miller.

West invited several women to their house party, including one he referred to as "hot." The comment took Jesse Solomon by surprise because he, along with everyone else in the house, knew West hoped to rekindle some semblance of a romance with Ciara last summer. Despite West saying he wanted to right the ship with Ciara, his actions proved different.

While Ciara was speaking with Ben Waddell on a couch outside, Emmie, one of West's guests, sauntered over and sat on his lap, asking him if they should make out. As he whispers to her that he used to "date the girl behind you," Ciara and Ben squirm, looking uncomfortable. "Come on, man, really? F---ing rookie, are you kidding me, mate?" Ben says aloud.

Ben says in a confessional that West is essentially blowing any kind of relationship with Ciara through his actions. Once West and Emmie exchange a kiss, Ciara and Ben leave.

"It's like weird because on one hand he doesn't owe me anything, but it's like... I wouldn't ever do that to him," Ciara says in a confessional. "Like I would never sit right next to you and like make out with a guy. Like, regardless of how you felt about me."

As more of the house realizes that West is making out with another woman, the more they try to shut it down. In fact, Amanda is the first person from the house to walk over and plop down on the double lounger with West and Emmie. "Am I crashing your party?" Amanda asks West and his date.

While Amanda is unsuccessful at stopping West and Emmie from making out, Ben's girlfriend, Sabrina Jet, is successful. Not only does she get in the middle of the couple, she tells West that Ben wants to talk to him (he didn't) while pulling Emmie to get some water. Emmie and her friends soon depart the party as West passes out on a couch.

Amanda takes this opportunity to write "d---" on West's forehead after Mia Calabrese remarks that his actions were disrespectful. "Now he's back on my list," Mia says. "Because if you f--- with my friend, that's where I draw the line."

West wakes up and tells the group the party was a hit because he invited the best people. "Even the girl you were making out with all night," Amanda shoots back. "You just got too comfortable... on probation."

West's reaction? He claims that he'd been trying to do nothing wrong for the last two years, while Ciara was cuddling with Jesse, adding that he hadn't had a single one-on-one conversation with her all summer. "But I feel like I just cheated on my wife," he admits.

Amanda wonders why, after making progress with Ciara, he decides to have a drunken makeout with someone else at their party. As West sits there looking stunned, Amanda's husband (now estranged) pipes up in West's defense, which further angers Amanda. "All I'm saying is if you wanna make progress in your relationship with Ciara, there's a level of respect that we have to have to live here together!" Amanda says as she storms off, sharing in a confessional that Kyle was Ciara's biggest fan.

As West continues to double down on defending his actions, saying Ciara only "flirts with me every 48 hours," Ciara draws a line in the sand. "There's a reason he was living on probation for this long," Ciara tells Amanda and Mia as she wipes away tears. "Now he's back in jail. I know why I have this gut feeling of why I didn't wanna be friends with him, and this is why."

Summer House is on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

1975 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 7:46pm

In 1975, a crime drama hit theaters that would go on to become one of the most intense and emotionally charged films of its era.

Dog Day Afternoon, directed by Sidney Lumet, has since been ranked among the best movies of all time by Collider, highlighting its lasting cultural and cinematic impact.

Based on a true story, the film follows Sonny Wortzik, a desperate man who attempts to rob a Brooklyn bank in order to pay for his partner's medical procedure. What begins as a poorly planned heist quickly spirals into a tense hostage situation, drawing massive media attention and turning Sonny into an unlikely public figure.

At the center of the film is a career-defining performance from Al Pacino, whose portrayal of Sonny captures both the character's volatility and vulnerability. His performance, paired with Lumet's documentary-style direction, creates a sense of realism that keeps viewers on edge throughout.

The film is widely praised for its sharp screenplay, which blends suspense with social commentary, touching on themes of media influence, identity and desperation. Rather than presenting a straightforward crime story, Dog Day Afternoon delves into the complexities of its characters, making it as much a character study as it is a thriller.

But, long before it hit theaters, rehearsals for the film got off to a rocky start.

"For some reason, I felt as though I didn't know who the character I was playing was," recalled Pacino in an interview with The Guardian. "I kind of left that out of the rehearsals or something. I don’t know what happened but I knew when I saw something on the screen I said: no. I saw I didn’t have a character so I thought, what am I doing, where am I, who am I, where am I going?"

Pacino continued, "I went home that night, took half a gallon of white wine, which I don't usually drink, for some reason and spent the whole night finding a character within myself from the script. I come in the next day and of course Lumet is looking at me like, what happened, Al? The cast – my friends – are saying, 'I think he’s having a breakdown.' But I wasn't. I was becoming somebody else, I think. I was becoming the guy that's in the film."

And the rest ways history. The movie became a critical success. It earned multiple Academy Award nominations and won Best Original Screenplay, further cementing its place in film history.

Nearly 50 years later, Dog Day Afternoon remains a powerful and relevant film, one that continues to captivate audiences with its raw emotion, gripping tension and unforgettable performances.

With its inclusion in Collider's ranking, the film stands as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling rooted in real human experience.

Taylor Frankie Paul Won’t Face Charges Over Alleged Domestic Violence, Utah Prosecutors Say

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 7:34pm

Taylor Frankie Paul will not be charged after an alleged domestic violence dispute with her ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen.

“After reviewing reports and evidence submitted to the Draper Police Department and West Jordan Police Department, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office has declined to file charges against Taylor Frankie Paul,” district attorney Sim Gill’s office said in a statement to Deadline on Tuesday, Apr. 14.

In February, the Draperr and West Jordan police departments in Utah opened separate domestic violence investigations regarding alleged altercations between Paul and Mortensen.

In letters to both departments obtained by Deadline, the district attorney's office said, “The complainant in these cases reported several incidents—some of which occurred more than three years ago. Any incidents of misdemeanor offenses which are alleged to have occurred more than two years ago are barred by the statute of limitations. Incidents which are alleged to have occurred within the statute of limitations have also been reviewed.”

“Several incidents that were submitted do not rise to the level of criminal offenses," the DA's office added. "The remaining incidents lack sufficient evidence to support filing criminal charges where the State must be able to prove such allegations beyond a reasonable date. Such incidents lack specificity as to when and what actually occurred or corroboration.”

The district attorney's office also said that the investigations would not affect Paul's probation status.

In March, a spokesperson for the Draper City Police Department in Utah confirmed that there was an open “domestic assault investigation” regarding Paul and Mortensen related to incidents that allegedly occurred in February 2026.

The spokesperson confirmed “allegations have been made in both directions” and that “contact was made with involved parties on [Feb] 24th and 25th,” but declined to share any further details.

Hulu paused filming of season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives due to the investigations. Shortly, after, ABC pulled the plug on Paul’s season of The Bachelorette after TMZ released a never-before-seen video that appeared to show her assaulting Mortensen back in 2023.

Amidst all of this, Paul temporarily lost custody of her 2-year-old son with Mortensen. During a hearing on Apr. 7, a judge granted Mortensen custody of the child and gave Paul up to 8 hours per week of supervised visitation. The arrangement is in effect until the next hearing on Apr. 30.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of domestic violence, help is available 24 hours a day through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.

1969 Timeless Love Anthem Recorded 57 Years Ago Today Was Banned Before Becoming a Classic

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 7:20pm

It's no exaggeration to say that John Lennon and Yoko Ono had one of the most iconic (and controversial) love stories of all time...or that the couple's relationship was the target of one of the biggest media frenzies in history. One of the most turbulent periods on Lennon and Ono's timeline happened over a two-week span in 1969 when the pair got married in Gibraltar and held their first "bed-in" in Amsterdam, being hounded by the press all the while. To top it all off, the now-classic Beatles song Lennon wrote about the experience ended up getting banned.

Recorded on April 14, 1969, and released as a non-album single on May 30, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" chronicled Lennon and Ono's journey in a funny, sort of exasperated way:

"Drove from Paris to the Amsterdam Hilton / Talkin' in our beds for a week / The newspeople said: 'Say what're you doin' in bed?' / I said: 'We're only try to get us some peace' / Christ you know it ain't easy / You know how hard it can be / The way things are goin' / They're gonna crucify me"

The song was recorded by just Lennon and Paul McCartney, as George Harrison and Ringo Starr were away at the time and Lennon was in a hurry to get the track out.

“Paul knew that people were being nasty to John, and he just wanted to make it well for him,” Ono said later, per Rolling Stone. “Paul has a very brotherly side to him.”

Since Lennon had gotten into a bit of hot water previously when he compared the popularity of the Beatles to that of Jesus, he anticipated that the lyrics about "Christ" and being crucified might ruffle a few feathers. According to the official Beatles website, he even sent a note warning record exec Tony Bramwell.

“No pre-publicity on ‘Ballad Of John And Yoko’ especially the ‘Christ’ bit,” Lennon wrote. “So don’t play it round too much or you’ll frighten people — get it pressed first.”

Alas, even after it was pressed, the song encountered plenty of backlash. In fact, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" was banned by over 100 U.S. radio stations, with radio program directors calling it "profane," "sacrilegious," "offensive," and "objectionable," according to a Rolling Stone article at the time.

From another bed-in, this time in Montreal, Lennon attempted to explain the meaning of the lyrics during a phone call with Bob Lewis of WABC-FM in New York.

“It has two meanings,” he said. “It’s like a prayer. You know, ‘Jesus, you alone should know it ain’t easy.’ And it has that street language connotation, too. But even when it’s used irreverently, it’s in effect a prayer, too. It’s a gospel song. I’m a big Christ fan — the song is a prayer.”

When asked why he thought it was banned, Lennon quipped, “Man, you know why.”

Of course, even a widespread radio ban wasn't enough to stop "The Ballad of John and Yoko" from becoming a classic. While it peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., it became the Beatles' 17th #1 hit in the U.K., where it was the band's last chart-topper until "Now and Then" in 2023.
