Christy Turlington and Edward Burns look better than ever with graying hair as they celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary.

Turlington, 57, who rose to stardom in the ’90s as one of the fashion world’s legendary supermodels alongside Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford, has made a name for herself in recent years as an activist and documentarian working to advocate for the health of mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. Burns, 58, an actor and director who also skyrocketed to stardom in the ’90s, is best known for his beloved indie film The Brothers McMullen, as well as more recent works like Summer Days, Summer Nights, and Millers in Marriage.

Turlington shared a series of photos in honor of their anniversary, as well as the debut of her husband's latest film, Finnegan's Foursome. Standing alongside Burns, the former supermodel and her man looked incredible with graying hair.

Turlington Founded a Maternal Health Nonprofit

After going back to school at 26 to get her undergrad degree at NYU, Turlington returned to school at 39 to get a master’s in public health. She’s the founder of Every Mother Counts, a maternal health care nonprofit organization. While she has two children, she previously told Glamour that the organization is “very much like my third child.”

In regard to her best professional advice, Turlington advised that people “cultivate meaningful relationships.”

“I really do try to listen very attentively to any kind of personal story that someone is sharing with me. Not in any kind of game way, but in a true way. Because the more I can absorb in whatever amount of time that I spend with anyone, the more closely we can connect and the more that I will be able to take forward into another relationship at some point,” she said. “There are so many relationships I’ve had since I was a teenager in my first profession that, while I don’t see people very frequently, they come in really handy in other areas of life. The more you put in at the very beginning, I think, the possibilities are that much greater. You just never know where anyone is going to move on to or be.”

Christy and Edward are Empty Nesters

With their kids now adults, Turlington and Burns are getting their first dose of life as empty nesters. While they're not too used to being on their own, Burns shared his best marriage advice, saying the duo believes in talking things out.

“It’s a cliche to say, but it’s communication,” Burns told USA Today last year. “You kind of know (in the) early days, are you a couple that talks? And if you do, I think you’re going to be fine. That’s worked out for us.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson recently spoke about the anxiety he experienced while working on Modern Family during a recent episode of his Dinner's On Me podcast

He recalled a particularly stressful panic attack he had at the time.

"I remember being in New York for gay pride. We weren't there for gay pride, but gay pride was happening that Sunday ... the point is, the streets were very full of people from the gay community," Ferguson shared.

“I was having pretty significant panic attacks near the end of Modern Family," the actor said.

While in New York, Ferguson revealed he “basically had a panic attack like in the streets."

"I was at a restaurant, it sort of came on, I was trying to look for a place to be quiet and private, but there was like, literally the streets were teeming with people," he said.

His partner and fellow actor JustinMikita was trying to pay the bill when Ferguson became so overwhelmed he started “running” away.

“I remember just flashes of this moment, but I remember being in a vestibule of a building, trying to just like catch my breath and hyperventilating, and someone coming up to me asking if they needed to call an ambulance, and I was like freaked out to turn around," he said.

Being recognized from Modern Family added to his stress. He joked that he is a "gay icon" because of his portrayal of an openly gay character on the sitcom.

"At that moment I was kind of by myself and this person was asking if they could call an ambulance, and I was afraid to turn around because I thought they were going to recognize me and I was like, 'I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine.'"

Modern Family aired on ABC from 2009 to 2020. It won a total of 22 Primetime Emmy Awards.

There is no doubt that a show like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder needs to wrap up with a full ending, and fortunately, Netflix agrees. The BBC and Netflix have renewed the Emma Myers series for a third season.

There is a major disappointing caveat to this renewal. It will be the last. Pip will solve her last case, offering viewers a full wrap-up of the story.

‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ Season 3 Has Already Finished Filming

In a surprising turn of events, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder Season 3 has already wrapped filming. Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back, and it is now in post-production. The great news about this is that there won’t be as long of a wait as there was for the second season. It took two years for the second season to drop, but Netflix confirms the final season will arrive in 2027.

Now for a little more disappointing news. There will only be four episodes to this final season, as Holly Jackson’s trilogy is brought to a “bloody” end.

That’s exactly the way Jackson referred to the ending when announcing the final season, as she went on to share how excited she is to see the final book developed, saying, “As Good as Dead is my favorite of the book series, and it’s by far my favorite season of the show too. You’ll see Pip as you’ve never seen her before. It’s dark, breathless, horrible, and somehow still manages to be funny. Come on back to Little Kilton for the final time … if you dare.”

The Netflix Series Will Adapt ‘As Good as Dead’

The third book in Pip’s story sees her about to head off to college. However, not all the secrets in her small town have been uncovered, and she needs to solve this final mystery. This mystery is a threat against her, with some anonymous person asking who will search for her when she goes missing.

When the police fail to help with the search, Pip realizes that to prevent herself from becoming the next victim, she needs to find the suspect herself. Myers shares, “Book 3 is my favorite of all the books, so I’m very excited to show everyone what we’ve done. Get ready for a crazy time!”

Get ready for the conclusion to the tale in 2027.

Avery Wilson became one of the most talked-about figures ahead of Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals after delivering a powerful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Madison Square Garden, where President Donald Trump was seen saluting during the performance.

The Grammy-nominated singer and Broadway actor performed the national anthem before tipoff as the New York Knicks hosted the San Antonio Spurs in a highly anticipated Finals matchup. 

Throughout the performance, Wilson received loud cheers from fans inside Madison Square Garden, further cementing his growing connection with Knicks supporters.

Wilson's appearance came as national attention was already focused on Game 3 due to Trump's attendance. The president, who became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, stood in a private suite and saluted during the anthem.

As cameras showed Trump during the performance, reactions inside the arena quickly became a major talking point. However, much of the attention online shifted to Wilson's vocals, with many viewers praising his performance.

Before the game, singer and political performer Mary Millben publicly backed Wilson on social media.

Wilson has become a familiar face at Madison Square Garden throughout the Knicks' playoff run. 

The singer has performed the national anthem multiple times during New York's postseason home games, leading many fans to view him as a lucky presence for the team. His return for Game 3 added another layer of excitement as the Knicks attempted to move closer to their first NBA championship since 1973.

Fans watching Game 3 quickly flooded social media with positive reactions.

“Well done, AVERY. The media focus should be on your talent!” one commenter wrote.

Another fan added, “Amazing voice.”

Praise continued to pour in after the performance, with one viewer stating, “One of the best singers of our generation a 100%.”

A separate reaction read, “He sounded INCREDIBLE.”

Another supporter described the anthem as “A historic performance from a fantastic Broadway actor.”

Following the game, Wilson addressed the public response and thanked supporters for their encouragement.

“Thank you so much for all the love that you are showing me through texts and posts. I really really appreciate it,” Wilson said in a video shared on Instagram.

Reflecting on the experience, he added: “Me singing the National Anthem at the finals tonight - the Knicks vs the Spurs - was truly an unforgettable moment, even though I wanted us to win New York City so we could turn up. The game is not over. I know who was in the audience so I didn't think that people were booing me at all. I was also prompted to know that they probably would do so.”

Despite the attention surrounding Trump's attendance and the heightened security around Madison Square Garden, Wilson's national anthem performance emerged as one of the night's biggest entertainment moments.

Fifty years ago, the iconic '70s hard rock band Kiss released "Beth," a song that, despite never capturing the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, would go on to become their highest-charting single ever, all thanks to radio airplay.

"Beth" was initially released in July of 1976 as the B-side single to "Detroit Rock City" from Kiss's fourth studio album Destroyer. Following its release, the track experienced a rapid increase in listener demand due to radio DJs flipping the record in favor of the ballad. By August, "Beth" had grown so much in popularity on the airwaves that the band re-released it as an A-side single.

One month after its re-release, "Beth" entered the Billboard Hot 100. The song climbed up the chart until it peaked at No. 7 in early December, marking the band's highest-charting song in their entire career.

The single's milestones didn't stop with just chart success; it also bled into commercial triumph. In 1977, "Beth" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 1 million copies in the U.S. alone—affirming Kiss's ability to move commercial audiences.

Produced by Bob Ezrin through Casablanca Records, "Beth" is notable for its stripped-down instrumentation and soaring vocals. The track is a stark juxtaposition from the rest of the band's catalog. It takes a break from Kiss's typical electric-heavy soundscapes by utilizing gentle piano, lush strings and an intimate vocal performance that crescendos into a quintessential '70s power ballad.

The emotional, orchestral ballad tells the story of someone torn between their family and their professional obligations. Written by drummer Peter Criss and his former bandmate Stan Penridge, "Beth" served as an autobiographical track that mirrored their experiences as traveling performers. Paired with the song's emotional production, "Beth" was quickly recognized as a classic within the soft rock genre.

Even after five decades, "Beth" continues to resonate with new audiences in the digital era through streaming platforms. On Spotify alone, the song has garnered over 83 million streams, attesting to its lasting relevance in rock history and Kiss's career.

Janis Ian released "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" in 1966. It took a year to crack the Top 20 on Billboard's Hot 100 — and by the time it did, the then-16-year-old was already being boycotted and chanted off the stage. 

Ian had written the song three years earlier, at just 13. Her debut single was about a White girl in love with a Black guy and a society that refused to accept it. 

Being a hit didn't protect her from the backlash. Some club owners turned her away fearing violence would break out. Several radio stations refused to play the song because they thought she was “too young” to be singing about such things.

But nothing could have prepared her for what happened at the Valley Music Theater in Encino, California. It was only her fourth or fifth concert. A few songs in, the room turned. 

"When I started 'Society’s Child,' these people started yelling," she recalled in the documentary Janis Ian: Breaking Silence. "And I thought they were yelling something nice ‘cause on stage you can’t really hear what people are yelling very clearly. But I realized they were all yelling 'N---- lover!' at me.”

She tried to push through it, but the chanting only got louder. "I knew that I was going to start to cry, and I didn’t want them to see me cry," she said. So she set her guitar down, walked off stage and went to the restroom. "I just didn't know what I was supposed to do." 

Eventually the promoter came looking for her. He had been in the box office during the whole thing and had no idea what had happened. When she told him, he didn't sugarcoat his response. 

"He said, ‘Well, you don’t leave the stage because somebody calls you a name,’” she recalled. They went back and forth for what felt like forever. Then something he said finally got to her. "I can't believe the girl who wrote that song is a coward."

Ian's grandparents were Jewish Russian immigrants who had sacrificed everything to come to America. If they could handle that, she could handle this. "Who was I to leave the stage?" she said. She went back out, picked up her guitar and kept singing. 

The ushers made their way through the crowd with flashlights, shining them on the hecklers. The manager kicked them out, and Ian later learned that those roughly 20 people had come that night specifically to intimidate her.

"It was a life changing moment for me," Ian said. "Because I realized for the first time that the song didn’t just have the power to make people angry, but it had the power to make people stand up and stand up for what they believe. And that was a huge deal, that music could do that. I think that was a large part of what set me on my course."

It would be eight years before Ian had another major hit. "At Seventeen" came out in 1975 when she was in her early twenties, yet she wrote about the pain of not fitting in as a teenager so convincingly that it resonated with a whole generation. It reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and won her a Grammy.

Another member of Brad Pittand Angelina Jolie's family is reportedly taking steps to leave the "Pitt" name behind.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the former couple's daughter Zahara has filed a petition to legally change her name from Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt to Zahara Marley Jolie. The petition was reportedly filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on June 4, though Zahara signed the paperwork back on April 28.

The move comes just weeks after the 21-year-old celebrated a major milestone of her own. On May 17, Zahara graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. During the commencement ceremony, she was introduced using only her mother's surname.

While Zahara has not publicly commented on the decision, she isn't the first of her siblings to distance themselves from the Jolie-Pitt hyphenation.

Her younger sister, Shiloh, was the first to legally petitioned to remove "Pitt" from her surname shortly after turning 18 in 2024. More recently, reports surfaced that Zahara's older brother Maddox had also moved to legally drop Pitt from his name, too. Although Maddox has not publicly addressed the decision, he had already begun using Jolie professionally, including in his assistant director credit on Angelina's 2025 film Couture.

The latest development comes nearly a decade after Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016. Jolie, 51, and Pitt, 62, share six children together: Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 19, and 17-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.

The family has largely remained private about the the split, though Angelina previously offered a rare glimpse into its impact last fall. In a declaration filed in October 2025 as part of the former couple's ongoing legal battle over Château Miraval, Angelina wrote, "The events leading to my need to separate from my ex-husband were emotionally difficult for me and our children."

She went on to explain that neither she nor the couple's six children had returned to the French estate since filing for divorce in 2016, adding, "To this day, the children and I have never again set foot on the property, given its connection to the painful events leading to the divorce.

Most people associate the chart-topping '60s single "Somebody to Love" with Jefferson Airplane, and with good reason. It was the legendary band's first major hit, after all, not to mention one of the first massively successful songs from the era-defining San Francisco music scene. But in fact, "Somebody to Love" wasn't originally a Jefferson Airplane song.

Written by Darby Slick after a breakup (and reportedly fueled by his frustrations with the free love movement of the time), "Somebody to Love" was first released in 1966 as a single by the Great Society, featuring Darby's sister-in-law Grace Slick on vocals, her husband Jerry Slick playing drums, and Darby on guitar. Unfortunately, the song didn't take the band very far, and before long, Great Society would break up anyway.

Darby started to become interested in exploring Indian music; around the same time, the already-established Jefferson Airplane asked Grace to join the band following the departure of their previous lead singer, Signe Toly Anderson, according to American Songwriter.

When Grace joined Jefferson Airplane, she didn't just bring her iconic vocal skills, she also brought two songs that would go on to be huge hits: "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love."

Unlike the Great Society's version, Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" shot up the charts, peaking at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June of 1967 and establishing the band as a force to contend with.

Even though Darby wasn't a member of Jefferson Airplane, since he wrote "Somebody to Love," the song's success was a boon for him, too.

"When [Slick] left to join the Airplane, it allowed me to actually start to study the Indian music full-time," Darby recalled in a 2021 interview. "Then, the money I got allowed me to study it for many years. So I went in to study 12 years nonstop, just absolutely full-time. For one of those years I practiced exercises for 12 hours a day, six days a week. It was just a total commitment to the classical music of northern India."

In the years since "Somebody to Love" first blew up, it's only grown in popularity. Rolling Stone ranked the track #279 on their list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time," and Michael Gallucci of Ultimate Classic Rock declared it Jefferson Airplane's #1 song "because it drives harder than almost anything else they ever recorded," adding, "Slick checks in with her all-time greatest vocal (she originally cut the song with her pre-Airplane band the Great Society), and the hook is bigger and brighter than most of the band's psychedelic folk-outs."

While Trump never officially endorsed Pratt, he did have some good things to say about the candidate. Of course, they do share some similarities. They’re both former reality stars-turned-political figures, they’re both outside contenders, and they’re both often cast in the villain role. 

In May, Trump told reporters, “I’d like to see him do well. He’s a character. I hear he’s a big MAGA person. Okay, so maybe it wasn’t dramatic in terms of the numbers. By Tuesday, June 9, Raman had 229,576 votes, and Pratt had 207,757. With just over 92% of the votes in, 66,000 votes remain.

Like Trump, Vance wasn't happy about the loss. While he didn’t post his views on social media, he did air his grievances on live TV. 

During an interview with Fox News, the Vice President said, “Fundamentally, the problem here with this whole thing is, how is it that you had Karen Bass who was in first place, Spencer Pratt was in second place, and then this other woman was in third place. You would expect these mail-in ballots to kind of make that same basic pattern where number one gets the most votes, number two would get the second most votes, and so on.”

Vance continued, “ But somehow we find ourselves in a situation where number one, they’re still receiving ballots, not just counting ballots, Jessie; they’re still receiving ballots. And number two, the way that they’re coming in just so happens to work out such that the Republican is getting kicked out of the final two, so it’s a Democrat versus a Democrat runoff. That seems pretty shady to me.”

Over the years, Top Chef has been one of the shows that keeps fans coming back. Premiering in March 2006 on Bravo, the show has legitimately built a sort of cult following that has thrust many of its competitors into the spotlight nearly overnight. Some—like current hostKristen Kish—have seen the upside of the spotlight, while others who, even if they meant no harm, have not gotten the most favorable responses from viewers.

But whether you're a fan of the contestants that everyone loves to hate, like to root for the underdog from the beginning or have your sights on the hometown hero, there's no denying that there's someone for everyone during each season of the famed show. And this season (Season 23, if you were wondering how locked in we are with keeping this culinary party going on Bravo), there was one chef in particular who really stole the hearts of viewers everywhere: Chef Rhoda Magbitang.

Representing the beautiful island of Hawai'i, Chef Rhoda made viewers laugh, cry and want to lick our screens every week during the competition. And while the newfound star saw her journey briefly cut short when she was eliminated during week five, her grit and gumption saw her claw her way back into the competition after winning Last Chance Kitchen for the season.

Now, donning the title of this season's Top Chef: Carolinas, Magbitang's story is one that is filled with heart, determination, appreciation and joy. Though this chef has been a fan of the long-running series since its inception, if you ask her why she chose to join this season of the show, you may be surprised to know her answer.

"If I'm being honest, to this day, I don't know what made me want to do it," Magbitang told Parade while chatting in CanoeHouse—the Japanese-inspired oceanfront restaurant at Mauna Lani, Auberge Collection in Hawai'i where she serves as executive chef. "Obviously, there are a lot of battles that go on inside your head. Like, whether or not you want to expose yourself on national television. For some reason though, I ended up doing it."

Magbitang, who is of Filipino descent, moved to the United States when she was just 17 years old along with her then-15-year-old younger sister. And while falling in love with cooking after relocating to California was a pure accident, what wasn't an accident was her love for the Top Chef franchise since its first episode way back when. That's why her appearance on the show means more than fans will ever know.

"I've watched the show since the first episode and I remember distinctly watching it and just thinking about the evolution of the show, and how it changed people's lives. You've seen it in real time. I've witnessed it in real time," said the talented chef. "It definitely crossed my mind back then like 'Oh, maybe one day I'll be good enough to be on it.' It's one of those things that once it's planted in your head, it's hard to get it out. I mean when you get approached to do a Top Chef, you can't just say "no". I don't know what finally pushed me over the edge to say, 'Yes, I'll do it,' but here we are."

Here we are, indeed, but don't think the journey to get to the show's finish line was without a few bumps in the road. While Magbitang has been a fan-favorite since she stepped into the onscreen kitchen, during Week 5, the judges didn't find her dish to be as favorable. And as a result, she was eliminated.

"They didn't even bring an interview shirt for me," she said. "I don't know if it's because no one thought I was going to be eliminated or what. I had to borrow a shirt from production to put on. There was a producer who usually does my interview, Tone, and he was kind of hyping me up. Like, 'Yeah, there's Last Chance Kitchen, let's go!' But I just kept saying, 'I don't know if this is for me.' There was so much of the competition where the noise just wouldn't quiet down in my head. And I knew, this setting—I felt like—wasn't bringing out the best of me. So, that was hard to reconcile. I couldn't, in good conscience, feel like I was putting forth my best because it just felt like it didn't fit. It wasn't a good match and I felt so numb. I couldn't bring myself to get back in the game."

That feeling, however, didn't last long because as fans saw, she dominated the Last Chance Kitchen, placing herself back in the running. And to Magbitang, there's nothing that she would change about her experience—from the good to the bad and to the ugly.

"Even with my weakest points on the show, I don't think I would have wanted to change it. Nothing ever came easy for me. So for me, it didn't make sense in my head to practice," the chef explained to Parade. "I don't think that would have helped me to implement something that doesn't necessarily come naturally to me. I've watched the show enough to know that there's a lot of thinking on your feet. And, you have to be able to adapt to the challenges, and understand what the layout is of the kitchen. I feel like my journey is so unique to me that I feel like my goal was not to dominate the season. My goal was to do really well because I can't factor in the skills of the other chefs. I only have to compete against myself. I know that people think that saying is corny, but at the end of the day, that's what you're doing."

Sure, her biggest competition was herself this season, but that doesn't mean she didn't feel that there were other contestants who gave her a run for her money.

"I was immediately very intimidated with Sherry [Cardoso]. She was—I think—the first one [that made me feel intimidated]. Because she was quiet, but she's kind of a killer. And, she's not afraid to say her peace. I love that. I just gravitate towards that, but it also terrified me in the sense of the competition."

Now that she's rocking the crown of this season's winner, though, the intimidation factor is far in her rearview and has been replaced by the surreal feeling of being named America's 23rd Top Chef. There was one thing, however, that superseded the thought of her possible win during this season's finale: Seeing her younger sister there to support her.

"It was a full circle moment. My sister and I came here when I was 17 and she was 15. She hadn't even graduated high school. We lived with my grandma, who we didn't grow up with. But that's family. So, we've gone through so much, and the fact that she's the one that was there...it didn't even feel real at all," she said. "I kept looking over to her when Kristen was about to announce the winner, but I couldn't look at her too long because I was going to start sobbing and I didn't want to look like a sore loser or anything. But it's like no, I'm crying because my sister is here. I've always looked up to her, even though she's younger than me because I always felt like she's the better person. She's just so responsible. She's good to all of us and it just felt so fitting. And there's nothing like it."

This season's finale episode obviously became a big moment for the chef for more reason than one, but her winning meal, which was rooted in her Filipino heritage, was the one dish that she was most proud of this season. Though the chef revealed that she'll never think any of her meals are perfect in her eyes, the finale meal was the one exception. The reason? It meant more to her than viewers could ever imagine.

"There was a lot of thought and we were given a lot of time to think about it," she said. "It just felt so right, but terrifying because I don't cook Filipino food, let alone do it professionally or on a finale. There were things I would change here or there, but the essence of that meal is like my heart and soul."

So would she do it all over again? Maybe. But one thing is for sure, Magbitang left there with more than just a new title. She left the show with a new portion of herself that she was happy to find.

"I did find myself a bit," she said. "There was a little bit of me that was hiding and I was like, 'Oh, there you are,' and I kind of want to see more of that, you know."

Cranston and Seehorn have never worked together, but they both existed in the Breaking Bad universe. Cranston played Walter White in the original 2008 series, which gave him four of his seven Emmys. Seehorn portrayed Kim Wexler in the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul. 

Cranston opened up about the A-listers he’s worked with on the 2025 comedy show The Studio. Madonna will make an appearance in the series' upcoming second season.

When Seehorn asked the Malcolm in the Middle star about his experience with Kathryn Hahn, he responded with a resounding “She’s a hoot.”

Seehorn then brought up “the brilliantCatherine O’Hara, which was sad to see.”

“Oh, we miss her so much,” Cranston said. “I played Catherine O’Hara’s husband in three different productions. And then she was my nemesis in The Studio.”

O'Hara died on January 30, 2026, at 71 years old.

“She was such a joy to be with. Catherine O’Hara was a person who, you not only marveled at her comedic chops, but when it’s ‘cut,’ you say, ‘I want to sit next to Catherine.’ It was just heartbreaking to lose her,” he said.

“Well, I hope I get to be your scene partner one day,” Seehorn responded.

John Lennon achieved countless milestones with The Beatles, but one of his biggest solo successes came from a song that is often overshadowed by classics like "Imagine" and "(Just Like) Starting Over."

Released in 1974, "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" became Lennon’s first and only solo No. 1 single in the United States during his lifetime. The track, featured on his album Walls and Bridges, topped the Billboard Hot 100 on Nov. 16, 1974, and remains a notable chapter in the former Beatle’s solo career.

The song arrived during a transitional period in Lennon’s life. At the time, he was separated from Yoko Ono and spending time with May Pang, who later recalled how the track’s title was born from one of Lennon’s late-night television sessions.

“At night, he loved to channel-surf,” Pang told Radio Times in December 2005, according to Performing Songwriter, “and he would pick up phrases from all the shows. One time, he was watching Reverend Ike, a famous black evangelist, who was saying, ‘Let me tell you guys, it doesn’t matter, it’s whatever gets you through the night.’ John loved it and said, ‘I’ve got to write it down or I’ll forget it.’ He always kept a pad and pen by the bed. That was the beginning of ‘Whatever Gets You Thru The Night’.”

The phrase quickly became the foundation for a song that would eventually make music history. While the lyrics came from a television broadcast, the music had a different source of inspiration.

According to accounts surrounding the song’s creation, Lennon drew inspiration from George McCrae’s chart-topping hit "Rock Your Baby," which was one of the biggest songs at the time. Although the finished recording sounded very different from McCrae’s smash hit, the influence helped spark Lennon’s creative process.

The song was recorded at New York City’s Record Plant studio, where Elton John happened to be working on his own material. What started as a casual studio visit soon turned into a major collaboration.

Elton John ultimately contributed harmony vocals, piano and organ to the recording, helping shape the final version that listeners would hear on radio stations across America.

Despite the song’s potential, Lennon was not convinced it would become a hit. Elton John disagreed and made a wager with his friend. He bet Lennon that "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" would reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lennon accepted the challenge and promised that if the song topped the chart, he would join Elton on stage during one of his concerts.

The song delivered exactly that result. After climbing to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, Lennon honored the bet by appearing at Elton John’s Thanksgiving Day concert at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 28, 1974.

The performance became one of the most memorable moments of Lennon’s solo years. During the show, he performed "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" alongside Elton John. He also joined him for renditions of Beatles classics "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "I Saw Her Standing There."

The appearance would later be recognized as Lennon’s last major concert performance. 

More than five decades later, the song continues to stand as a reminder of an unexpected television inspiration, a studio collaboration with Elton John, and a chart-topping success that secured its place in rock history.

Country superstar Brad Paisley has been busy lately.

The musician's unique and innovative approach to new music began in early May, when he announced on Instagram that he was "building something," accompanied by a picture of a guitar case filled with empty containers and the word "Tacklebox."

Soon, it became apparent that Tacklebox was the name of his upcoming album: his first collection of new music in nine years, other than the Christmas project Snow GlobeTown. It's an evolving project rather than a traditional album, so instead of dropping it all at once, he began releasing one song at a time. It will include unreleased and unrecorded music from the '90s, along with new music inspired by the '80s and '90s.

On June 9, Paisley's Instagram post got his base riled up when he teased the newest song for June 12.

Others surmised that the song would be "Whiskey Before Breakfast." "I’ve been waiting for it since I heard it in the SOTM album trailer," a fan commented. A reply from another fan reinforced the theory: "He’s been opening his shows with it for about a year or so now! "Hoping that we’ll get a studio cut of it at some point."

Sharing with fans a scene from his 1980 film, The Jazz Singer, Diamond posted a clip of his character performing “Summerlove,” and, oh, the nostalgia that washed over us like a baseball stadium wave set to the tune of “Sweet Caroline.”

Allow us to set the scene: The performance happens about midway into the film, when Diamond’s character takes the stage at a late-night comedy club. Dressed in a jewel-toned suit and glittering button-down, he’s heckled by a hostile audience before starting an acoustic version of the song. Before long, however, the orchestra behind him kicks in, he finds his rhythm, and he wins over the crowd, including his disapproving wife and love interest/music agent backstage. It’s your classic cringe-to-crowd-pleasing movie moment.

Released in November 1980, “Summerlove” is one of many highlights on The Jazz Singer’s five-times platinum soundtrack. A sun-soaked, feel-good ballad, the song sings of a lonely boy and a lonely girl who aren’t lonely together, and perfectly captures the potent angst of a fleeting summer romance. Meanwhile, its waltz-like rhythm and laid-back vibe give Diamond’s rich vocals a platform to shine brighter than any of his signature sequin tops.

Co-written by Diamond and French composer Gilbert Bécaud, “Summerlove,” called a “simply well-constructed pop song” byuDiscover Music, contributed enormously to the soundtrack’s success. A stellar showcase for hits including “Love on the Rocks,” “Hello Again,” “America,” and, of course, “Summerlove,” the record went on to win a Grammy and remains one of the most successful projects in Diamond’s career. As UDM put it, “Cinema’s loss was music’s gain.”

Co-directed by Richard Fleischer and Sidney J. Furie, The Jazz Singerwas adapted from Samson Raphaelson's 1925Broadway play and marked the fourth screen adaptation. A modern remake of the landmark 1927 film widely considered to be the first talkie, it follows Diamond’s Yussel Rabinovitch, the son of a devout Jewish cantor who chooses to chase fame as a pop star. 

Starring Diamond in his acting debut, along with Laurence Olivier and Lucie Arnaz, the film’s problem wasn’t star power. Rather, it was everything else. Called “ridiculous,” “outmoded,” and “painfully schmaltzy,” critics did not hold back. Banking barely enough to cover its budget, the film was a flop commercially as well. 

Reflecting on the experience later, Diamond said, "I decided while I was doing The Jazz Singer that I’d rather be a really good singer than a mediocre actor; that I’d concentrate on my music, my records, and my shows."

Now 85, the Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter has built a career spanning more than seven decades, 13 Top 10 hits, and 13 Grammy nominations. So what if The Jazz Singer never quite sparkled. At least it gave us the diamond in the rough that is “Summerlove."
