Inside Michelle Pfeiffer’s Marriage — And Why She Waited 30 Years to Work With Husband David E. Kelley
For more than three decades, Michelle Pfeifferand her TV writer husband David E. Kelley refused to work together. “Nobody writes, honestly, better for women than he does,” Pfeiffer said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in April 2022. “And yet, I value our relationship more than a good part, and I just think it's too risky.”
Well, that was then.
Now, Pfeiffer is starring in the Apple TV+ series Margo's Got Money Troubles, which Kelley created. Based on a book by Rufi Thorpe, the show stars Elle Fanning as a single mom who turns to OnlyFans for money. Pfeiffer plays her mother, a former Hooters waitress who wants more for her daughter.
For Kelley, working with his wife let him see her talent in a new light. “I always knew she was good at what she did. I've seen her work and she's pretty good at this,” he told USA Today. “But I have to say, this was the first time that I ever watched her on screen interpreting material that I had done … I was pretty impressed.”
Long before this professional crossover, Pfeiffer talked about how she and Kelley operate from a place of unwavering respect for one another.
“I got really lucky,” she told Parade in 2012. “I never take him for granted. I've never met a person who has more integrity than my husband. I respect that. There's his humor and intelligence, too, and he's really cute, all those things — but if you don't respect your partner, you'll get sick of him.”
Keep reading for a guide to Pfeiffer and Kelley’s marriage, including how they met and whether they have kids.

Who is Michelle Pfeiffer’s husband?Pfeiffer is married to David E. Kelley, one of the most successful TV writers and producers in Hollywood. He’s the creative force behind hit shows like Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies and The Practice, known especially for writing complex roles for women.
Although Kelley’s now synonymous with must-watch TV, he actually started out as a lawyer in Boston. “I knew I liked to write,” he told Gold Derby. “I had done a little bit in college, but it wasn't something I really thought I was going to make a living at.”
As a young litigator, he spent downtime in courtrooms writing a script, which in turn wound up in the hands of TV titan Stephen Bochco just as Bochco was staffing the show L.A. Law. On a “fluke,” Kelley was hired.

How did Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley meet?Pfeiffer and Kelley were set up on a blind date in early 1993. “I was kind of nervous … I’d had a couple of bad blind dates and I had sworn off of them, and my best friend said, ‘Please, just this last time, meet this guy, David Kelley,’" Pfeiffer said during an April 2022 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. "And I said, ‘OK.'”
But instead of having a one-on-one date, she put together a group outing with eight other people. "We didn’t speak the whole night, and then he left early to go to another party…”
Despite the awkward start, Kelley gave Pfeiffer a call two days later and they hit it off. By November, they were married.
Celebrating their milestone 30th back in 2023, Pfeiffer shared a rare selfie of the pair on Instagram. “30 years of bliss,” she wrote.
View this post on Instagram How long have Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley been married? The couple has been married for more than three decades, since 1993. They’ll celebrate 33 years on Nov. 13, 2026.

How many children do Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley have together?Pfeiffer and Kelley share two children: daughter Claudia Rose, who Pfeiffer was in the process of adopting when she and Kelley met (and who Kelley later adopted), and son John Henry.
Because Pfeiffer and Kelley had only been dating for about two months when she brought Claudia home, they were thrown into the deep end of a relationship much faster than your average couple.
“I really got to see [David] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion," Pfeiffer told Good Housekeeping in 2007. "We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together and, in a strange way, it took the pressure off, as a couple."
The timing may have been unusual, she added, but it was also kind of perfect. "I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person [David] is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
The pair went on to welcome their biological son in August 1994.
Who is Michelle Pfeiffer’s first husband?Pfeiffer was married to Peter Horton, who is best known for his role on Thirtysomething, from 1981 to 1988.
Explaining their split in a conversation with Interview Magazine, Pfeiffer said she and her ex were simply “too young” when they got married (she was 22 and he was 26). “…As we started growing up our needs changed,” she added.
But they were never on bad terms. “We’ve always been close, even up to the separation, which was very difficult on both of us because we have never stopped caring for each other,” she shared. “We didn’t have an angry breakup—he even helped me pack my car. ... It was, in that sense, really difficult because we didn’t have the anger to hide behind, the anger that covers up all the pain. But we’re like best friends when we see each other.”
Has Michelle Pfeiffer worked with her husband, David E. Kelley?Despite both being major players in Hollywood, Pfeiffer and Kelley didn’t actually collaborate until Margo’s Got Money Troubles. Their longstanding separation of their professional and personal lives was very much by design.
“I've seen a lot of couples where they seem to have a really great marriage, and then they work together and next year they're filing for divorce,” she said in a January 2021 interview with The New Yorker.
The following year, she shared another explanation on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “We're both kind of fierce when we work, and so if I come home and I've had a bad day, and I'm upset about something, I want him to be on my side because he hasn't heard the other side,” she said. “There's value in that.”
The couple decided to break their no-working-together streak simply because Pfeiffer was perfect for the role of Shayanne. “When I read the book, I could only see one person playing it," Kelley said. "And we’re lucky enough that she said yes — the second-luckiest yes I’ve gotten from her.”

Ty Pennington Shares the One Design Mistake He “Can’t Believe” He Made
Ready for another trip around the neighborhood? Rock the Block is officially back for its seventh season. Each season, HGTV pros are asked to put their unique spin on an enclave of identical homes. This time, however, industry insiders are getting star-studded assistance from the likes of Drew Lachey, Vernon Davis, Brooke Hogan and Southern Charm’s Chelsea Meissner. It’s a celeb-centric twist that host Ty Pennington says adds a whole new layer to the beloved series.
“I think what I'm most excited for fans to see is how these teams can come up with such great designs and work with someone they literally just met,” Pennington tells Parade. “The fact that you can work with somebody you just met and find a way that you can agree on a certain design style and sense makes for an amazing accomplishment, but also amazing television. You’ve got a lot of people trying to prove themselves.”
View this post on InstagramDesigning a space with a virtual stranger can be a feat, but so is working with a friend, significant other or family member. So, what’s the secret? For Pennington, it’s important to put your ego aside. “When you work with other people, the overall design is going to be better because it's not just your idea,” he shares.
That said, there are some situations where co-designers simply can’t see eye to eye on the overall vibes, which is when Pennington encourages you to divide and conquer. After all, having one person work on the bathroom while the other takes on the foyer can honor both perspectives without any unnecessary friction.
Whether or not they gel well with their HGTV counterparts, one thing’s for sure: This season of Rock the Block is some of the celebrities’ first brushes with a home renovation. For DIY rookies who want to try their luck at their own home makeover, Pennington encourages you to take small, strategic steps.
“Before you start, make sure you can finish,” he shares. “There are a lot of things you can take on, but before you start talking about ripping things out, make sure you've got an actual plan.” Not only should you consider the repercussions of, say, demolishing that seemingly structurally insignificant wall, but you also need to make sure you have the budget to get the job done.
View this post on Instagram“You don't want to go halfway and be like, ‘It was almost everything I wanted,’” he shares. “You can just do one square foot at a time, but it's going to take forever.”
Everyone has their design priorities: Some people will want to integrate smart home gadgets while others want to incorporate the latest trends. For Pennington, he encourages you to make the most of every nook and cranny. In fact, the HGTV star reveals that’s something even he overlooked when designing his Florida home. “I didn't put enough closets in, and I can't believe that because I knew I needed as many as possible,” he confesses. “If you have wasted space, convert that space into something.”
Two feet of empty walls might seem like no big deal, but they’re actually rife with design potential.
But, above all else, your space has to be reflective of your personal style. “When you walk in the front door of a home, you can tell immediately what someone's personality is and who they are,” he explains. Whether you add some cherished snapshots, hang a chandelier that epitomizes your style or show off an antique find, Pennington emphasizes that those smaller details can make any space more personalized and cozier.
Want more renovation tips? Tune into the season premiere of Rock the Block, which aired April 13 at 8 p.m. EST on HGTV.

Carnival Cruise Line Ambassador Issues a Warning Over This Strictly Banned Activity
When you book a premier "Cove Balcony" stateroom, the expectation is total privacy and a front-row seat to the ocean. But for one hopeful traveler, that private view came with a specific question for Carnival Cruise Line ambassador John Heald: Could her husband use their balcony for a little recreational fishing?
Heald, who is famous for fielding the quirky and often complicated queries of the cruising public on his Facebook page, had to deliver some disappointing—and expensive—news. Fishing from any Carnival ship is strictly forbidden, and the consequences for trying it are far more severe than a simple slap on the wrist.
Related: Carnival Just Solved the Biggest ‘Time Tax’ of Your Cruise Vacation
The Cost of "Taking the Bait"According to Carnival's "items overboard" policy, throwing anything into the ocean—including a fishing line—is a major violation. Guests caught attempting to reel one in could face a $500 fine, immediate removal from the ship at the next port, and a permanent, lifetime ban from the cruise line.
This isn't just an empty threat. According to TheTravel, in 2023, a couple went viral on TikTok for catching a fish from their balcony while docked in Nassau. Within 48 hours of the video being posted, they were issued a lifetime ban. To prevent these scenarios, Heald clarified that while guests can bring fishing gear for shore excursions, it must be stored by the crew while onboard. In a classic bit of Heald humor, he noted the equipment would be looked after by a specific crew member: "Rod Steward."
Related: Carnival Just Added a New ‘Free’ Menu Option to These Ships—And It’s a Total Crowd-Pleaser
Why the Ban Exists: Safety and PathogensWhile it might feel like a "killjoy" policy, the ban is rooted in serious safety concerns. A cruise ship is a complex environment where a stray, weighted fishing line could easily tangle in ship equipment or strike a passenger on a lower deck. A barbed hook traveling at the speed of a moving vessel is a recipe for a medical emergency that shipboard infirmaries aren't always equipped to handle.
Beyond the physical danger, there is a biological risk. Wild fish can carry diseases or pathogens that the cruise line cannot risk introducing to their strictly controlled food-service environments. Carnival’s policy is so firm that even fish caught on legitimate excursions cannot be brought back on board; they must be shipped home or disposed of before re-boarding.
Related: Why Carnival’s ‘Category 1A’ is the Best-Kept Secret in Cruising for 2026
In an era where "doing it for the 'gram" often trumps common sense, Carnival’s message is clear: the only thing you should be catching on your balcony is the sunset. For those who absolutely need to cast a line, stick to the vetted shore excursions—otherwise, that $500 fish might be the last one you ever "catch" at sea.

Jason Mraz Dishes on Unexpected Meanings Behind 2 of His Hit 2000s Songs (Exclusive)
Jason Mraz recently sat down with Parade to promote his new album Grandma's Gospel Favorites. In the process, he also discussed the unexpected meanings behind two of his hit songs: 2003's "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" and 2008's "I'm Yours."
Jason Mraz's New Album Grandma's Gospel Favorites Is Dropping in MayOn May 8, the two-time Grammy-winner, 48, will release Grandma’s Gospel Favorites, an album he made for his grandmother, the late Mary Helen Mraz-Fowler, as a Christmas gift 20 years ago.
Jason Mraz Talks New Album 'Grandma's Gospel Favorites' (2:03)Mraz's ninth studio album features his take on classics like “Old Rugged Cross," "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," and “It Is No Secret,” in addition to a bluegrass-inspired track of "Turn Your Radio On.” It also features two original songs, "Peach Pie" and "When We Die (You Are Loved)."
"The secret is that it's not very new," he told Parade of the upcoming album. "I recorded it in 2007 for my grandmother. And it was her favorite thing for many, many years. So it's been in our family for almost 20 years, and at the encouragement of family and friends, I'm finally sharing it."
Mraz explained, "In a way, they're time-tested songs. Some are 100 years old. They're songs that I grew up listening to in my household with my family. I know them well, and they're songs of comfort, they're songs of peace—asking why are we here? And that has always been present in my music."
Jason Mraz's Song 'The Remedy' Was About His Friend's Cancer Battle"The Remedy" was released in 2003 and peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. And it was actually about Mraz's close friend, Charlie Mingroni, who was diagnosed with cancer in his early 20s.
"My best friend from childhood had been diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma when he was 21, I was 22," Mraz told Parade. "And while I'm making my first album, he's getting a port and he's getting ready to endure months and months of chemo. And I couldn't figure out why I had my life and he had his life."
Mraz continued, "And he said, man, I'm not going to worry my life away. I'm going to do what they tell me to do. The remedy is the experience to go through with it. And whether I live or die, I'm meant to have this experience.'"
Jason Mraz Discusses Meaning Behind 2003 Hit 'The Remedy' (1:25)For Mraz, Mingroni's attitude during that difficult time was the "first time in my life that I had known someone and experienced the power of positive thinking, the power of positive language. The way he would continue to talk about his experience was comforting to the rest of us."
He concluded, "I celebrate him still today. He's still with me. And so I really was singing his messages in that song."
Jason Mraz's 'I'm Yours' Wasn't Intended as a Love Song"I'm Yours" was released in 2008 and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100; it also spent an impressive 76 weeks on the chart. Additionally, the track reached No. 1 on Adult Contemporary and Adult Pop Airplay charts.
Interestingly, "I'm Yours" wasn't intended as a love song, but rather a message about surrendering to a higher power.
"I start playing chords on guitar, piano, build a rhythm, build a pattern and close my eyes, and sing. And in that singing, I'm also simultaneously asking for guidance, asking what's going on, asking where can I serve?" he told Parade.
Jason Mraz Says Hit 2008 Track 'I'm Yours' Wasn't a Love Song (1:38)Mraz said that he wrote the song after a "little slump" in his personal life, and that he was ready to "get excited again about life."
"I'm basically singing to the great unknown, to God or the higher power or universal love, whatever it is that gives us our dreams and our lyrics," he said. "And I said, you know, make me an instrument. I'm yours."
Mraz continued, "And that really is what the lyrics are. It's like, I won't wait any longer. I'm going to interact with you. I am yours. And having that intimate relationship with a cosmic, ginormous, invisible thing also feels like an intimate relationship that two people can get married to. And so I didn't see that coming."
In addition to his gospel album dropping on May 8, Mraz is hitting the road in May and June along the U.S.'s eastern seaboard for his "I'm Still Yours" tour, with Gregory Page serving as the opening act.

1966 Brian Wilson Masterpiece Named One of the Best Songs of All Time
It’s been nearly six decades, but a 1966 Beach Boys classic still defines what a perfect song sounds like.
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" was hailed as one of the 25 essential Brian Wilson songs of all time by Rolling Stone. The outlet wrote, "The cresting harmonies and exquisite arrangement of 'Wouldn’t It Be Nice' help transform a narrative of teenage longing — potentially saccharine in other hands — into an existential, universal quest for a world where we belong.”
The Wilson, Tony Asher and Mike Love song was recorded for the Beach Boys' 1966 watershed LP Pet Sounds. Wilson composed the music and produced the track, Asher and Love wrote the song.
What emerged was a power pop ballad unlike anything else at the time, one that captured the shifting ideals of young romance. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” dared to dream about love, living together, and a future beyond convention.

Its lush harmonies and youthful optimism gave voice to a generation caught between tradition and change. In doing so, it didn’t just reflect the moment; it helped redefine what a modern love song could be.
Wilson said in a YouTube clip, "'Wouldn't it Be Nice' is a song I wrote in 1966. I had a couple of accordions mixed together, basses and drums, guitars and pianos, stuff like that. The bridge was two guitar players playing against each other, making a two-part harmony thing. It was very interesting."
RELATED: 1966 Haunting Masterpiece Brian Wilson Called the ‘Crowning Achievement’ of His Career
In the album liner notes for Pet Sounds, Wilson wrote, "Listen for the rockin' accordions. Also, listen for the ethereal guitars in the introduction. Tony Asher and I had visualized a scene; we saw that. It was just a place. We put it into music, and it found its way onto tape. We had a feeling in our hearts, like a vibration."
Additionally, Wilson discussed the song for a blog post on the official Beach Boys website. He says, "“In a sense it was what youthful people will talk about. ‘Wouldn't it nice if we could get married?’ -- but they're young, y’know? The whole idea about, wouldn't it be nice if we could do this or that but they're not quite old enough to be able to do it!"

He added that 1966 was a very big year for The Beach Boys. "I realized that the recording industry was becoming free and intelligent. We could go into new things – string quartets, auto-harps, and instruments from other cultures. I decided right then that I was going to try and make the greatest rock n’ roll album ever created."
RELATED: 1966 Overlooked Beach Boys Hit Now Considered One of the Best Rock Songs of the ’70s
Wilson concluded, "Pet Sounds was (aiming for a) more of an advanced kind of lyric. It wasn't about cars or surf or flashy ideas. It was more of an introspective album with very, very good lyrics. I would sit in my room and work for hours and hours on songs and then play them to Mike [Love], Dennis [Wilson], Al [Jardine], Carl [Wilson], and Bruce [Johnston] to see if they enjoyed them. Pet Sounds was an example of something advanced and experimental.”
“Wouldn’t It Be Nice” was released B-side to “God Only Knows.” It would reach No. 8 on the Billboard charts in September 1966 and would remain on the charts for 11 weeks.

Ann-Margret, 84, Reveals Ongoing Pain of Losing Husband of 50 Years: 'I Miss the Laughter' (Exclusive)
Ann-Margret has revealed how much she misses her late husband and manager Roger Smith nearly nine years after his death.
In an exclusive phone interview with Parade, the iconic actress, singer, and dancer, 84, described how their 50-year marriage made her proud.
Despite Ann-Margret’s six decades in Hollywood, including starring roles in such musicals as Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Viva Las Vegas (1964), and Tommy (1975), and dramas like Carnal Knowledge (1971), Magic (1978), and 52 Pick-Up (1986), she feels her greatest accomplishment is her long and happy marriage which sadly ended with Smith’s passing in 2017.
As Ann-Margret approaches her milestone 85thbirthday on April 28, she wants fans to know how much Smith meant to her. Who was Roger, what was their wedding like, what does she miss most about him, how did his personality please Ann, and did they raise children together? Read on to find out more!
Who was Roger Smith?Roger LaVerne Smith was born in California on December 18, 1932 and went on to serve in the Naval Reserve. He happened to meet acting legend James Cagney, who suggested Smith become an actor. The handsome military man played Cagney’s son in the 1957 film Man of a Thousand Faces. He then played Rosalind Russell’s grown nephew in the big screen hit Auntie Mame (1958).
But Smith truly became a star on TV as suave private detective Jeff Spencer in 77 Sunset Strip from 1958-63. As The Hollywood Reporter’s obituary stated, however, he had to leave the show after five seasons when a blood clot was discovered in his brain. Although surgery was successful, in 1965, Smith was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a chronic neuromuscular disease that causes weakness.
When did Smith and Ann-Margret meet? The two first met in 1961 during his 77 Sunset Strip heyday. Smith recalled to New York magazine in 1976, "Every other woman I met was falling all over me, but this innocent, fresh-faced beauty only spoke to me when I spoke to her and the rest of the time ignored me. I was impressed."
They didn’t pursue a romance then. Years later, however, as reported by Country Living, when Smith was separated from his first wife, Australian actress Victoria Shaw, he invited Ann-Margret to his nightclub performance. Dinner followed that night, then a flying date on his private plane the next day.

I knew that I could depend on him. I sensed it completely,” she told People.
For his part, Roger said, "Once I found Ann-Margret, I couldn't stand to be without her and, surprisingly, she couldn't stand to be without me."
When did Ann-Margret and Roger Smith marry?Smith, who had divorced Shaw in 1965, proposed to Ann during an evening horse-drawn carriage ride through New York’s Central Park the following year. He offered her a dazzling five-carat diamond ring. The beauty said yes and on May 8, 1967, they tied the knot in a simple five-minute civil ceremony in a small room at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Ann-Margret was 26 and Roger was 34. He decided to step away from his own acting to become her manager, making her career a big success.

We were together [a total of] 54 years. It just flew by because it was really good. I sure miss him! He took great care of me.”

Loved it!” she laughed. “We would always talk about things that we had done and faux pas that we had made. We laughed a lot.” She paused in reflection and added, “I miss the laughter.”

He never really showed that to anybody [else]. It was something we shared. He was shy in communicating with people.”

When did Roger Smith pass away?Smith died on June 4, 2017 at age 84 at Sherman Oaks Hospital -- of complications from myasthenia gravis.

(Photo by D Dipasupil/FilmMagic) Did they have children together? No. Ann-Margret previously told McCall’s magazine (via upi) about her infertility struggle. But she has been a devoted stepmother to Smith’s three children from his first marriage to Victoria Shaw (who passed away in 1988): Tracey, Jordan and Dallas. Ann noted in our interview about them, now reportedly in their 60s, “They’re great and I have known them for so many years. We can laugh together, which we always do. I love them!”

A Beloved Norwegian Cruise Line Ship Says Goodbye After 27 Years of Service
In the world of modern cruising, where ships are increasingly defined by record-breaking heights and high-tech robotics, there's something to be said for the weathered charm of a mid-sized legend. But after nearly 27 years of service, Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed that the Norwegian Sky will depart the fleet this September. Since its maiden voyage from Dover, England, in 1999, the 77,000-ton vessel has carried over 2.5 million passengers, acting as a floating home-away-from-home for a generation of cruisers.

View this post on Instagram A Pioneer of ‘Freestyle Cruising’The Norwegian Sky holds a unique place in maritime history as one of the ships that helped pioneer Freestyle Cruising. Before this shift, the industry was governed by rigid schedules—assigned dinner times, formal dress codes and fixed seating. Sky helped break those rules, introducing the concept that a vacation should be on the traveler's terms. It’s a legacy that every modern ship now follows, but Sky was one of the few that proved it could work at scale.
Related: Norwegian Cruise Line Is Quietly Bringing Back Some of Its Most Epic Routes
The Lore of the ‘Pride of Aloha’Long-time fans will remember the ship’s most dramatic chapter: its stint under the U.S. flag. Between 2004 and 2008, the vessel was renamed Pride of Aloha to jumpstart Norwegian’s Hawaii service. The transition was a frantic one; when a severe storm damaged the Pride of America during construction, NCL rushed the Sky into dry dock to fill the gap. For four years, it served as a Hawaiian staple before returning to its original name and traditional roots, having cemented its reputation as the fleet’s most versatile "utility player."
The Final FarewellAs the ship enters its final months, social media has transformed into a digital wake. For many, like Instagram users spontaneous_couple and theruskprick, the Sky was the setting of their very first cruise in 2010—the trip that created what they call their "favorite habit in life." While some commenters note that it may be "about time" for a 1990s-era ship to retire, the overwhelming sentiment from passengers and former crew members is one of deep nostalgia.
Fans are treating the remaining itineraries as a victory lap. Many credit the ship’s 2,000-passenger capacity for creating a "never crowded" feel that is hard to find in the era of 7,000-passenger mega-ships.
The departure of the Norwegian Sky is a reminder that in travel, the "human" element often outweighs the hardware. It wasn't the biggest ship, but it was the one that taught millions of people how to love the sea. As it sails toward its September sunset, it leaves a gap in the fleet that no amount of new tech can quite fill.

This 29-Year-Old Best-Selling Novel Was Ranked the Best Nicholas Sparks Book on Goodreads
Nicholas Sparks is a prolific writer– the novelist has published 27 books, including many New York Times best sellers, and several of his stories have been adapted into hit movies.
Though all of his books are different, there are several throughlines that fans love, from North Carolina settings to once-in-a-lifetime love stories full of wonder, passion, and beauty. And while you’d think that would make it hard to choose the best book by the author, it seems like his breakthrough novel has been the most impactful for Goodreads users.

When asked to rank the best Nicholas Sparks books, users of the bibliophile social media page put The Notebookin the number one spot. Published in October 1996 and set 50 years earlier in 1946, The Notebook tells the story of a World War II veteran who can’t stop thinking about the one that got away, a woman he dated fourteen years earlier. When she pops back into his life, torn between memories of their love and the commitment she has since made to her fiancé, the two revisit their relationship once more.
If the story sounds familiar, it was also adapted into a 2004 movie starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. It has since become a fan favorite, despite its tepid critical response. “This is a movie that isn't ashamed to wring each teardrop by any means necessary,” said The Washington Post, while The San Francisco Chronicle shared a similar sentiment, calling it “An old-fashioned and occasionally schmaltzy movie that delivers an emotional wallop sure to elicit tears from all but those with truly intractable hearts.”

The romance novel has over 1.8 million ratings on Goodreads, with an average score of 4.17 out of five stars. Fans call it “quite possibly the sweetest love story ever” and “a beautiful, emotional, intense and passionate love story.” Despite its popularity, many reviewers note that the prose skews towards the sappy side, explaining that “The romantic tone of The Notebook was both its greatest asset and biggest downfall.”

1970 No. 1 Hit Medley Became a Timeless Classic Rock Anthem
Fifty-five years ago, the Guess Who topped the charts with a song medley that would become one of their signature hits. The song, “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” appeared on the Canadian rock band's breakthrough album American Woman. It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 9, 1970, remaining there for three weeks, and became a classic rock anthem. The two-part hit was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.
The first part of the song originally appeared as the B-side to the song “American Woman.”
“Out comes ‘American Woman,’ the longest song to ever be number one at the time,” Guess Who founding member Randy Bachman told Best Classic Bands in an interview. “The other side, ‘No Sugar Tonight,’ which I wrote alone, was the shortest.”
Bachman wrote “No Sugar Tonight” after he witnessed a couple arguing on a street in San Francisco.
“She slams the door, and she then says, ‘Baby, when you get home, you ain't getting no sugar tonight,’” Bachman told Goldmine magazine in 2024 . “And I go, ‘Wow, that one thing says it all.’ And I went and wrote this song. It was kind of racy when I wrote it because you know what it means. I had to clean it up. “
‘No Sugar Tonight’ was paired with a second song to make a singleClocking in at just over two minutes, “No Sugar Tonight” was too short to be a single on its own. It was paired with fellow Guess Who band member Burton Cummings’ “New Mother Nature” and was released as a separate single in March 1970.
“We put it together with 'New Mother Nature’ because it’s only really half a song ... [it] was very short,” Bachman told Goldmine. “And we wanted to do what The Beatles did with ‘A Day in the Life.’ Put my song, then Burton's song, and then back to back.”
In a 2023 interview on the Professor of Rock podcast, Bachman explained the songwriting process. “When Burton and I would get together, we'd play each other a song, and I would see that he would like the beginning of my song or the hook, but the rest bored him,” he shared. “Then he'd play me a song, and we would take the parts that really excited each other and put them together.”
“Well, we each had written a song, and it was very weird because we're trying something different,” Bachman continued. “I said, ‘Let's put the two songs together, you know, you don't need to write a middle eight for mine, I don't need to write a hook for yours, let's put them together, we'll have our own ‘Day in the Life.’ So we start with ‘No Sugar,’ then ‘New Mother Nature.’ I said, ‘Then guess what, ‘in the end they could overlap each other.’”
“It was really fun, and it ended up being like a cool suite of putting two songs together,” Bachman added.
RELATED: 1976 No. 1 One-Hit Wonder Was Written in Five Minutes
Bachman left the Guess Who at the height of the band’s fame in 1970, while Cummings left in 1975 to pursue a solo career. The two recently reunited for a reunion tour.
As part of his solo act, Cummings had a cheeky introduction for the Guess Who medley. During a 2025 show in New Jersey, he told the audience, “This next song reminds me of the old Doublemint gum commercial because it’s ‘Two, two, two songs in one.” He then went into the “No Sugar Tonight" and “New Mother Nature" medley, according to New Jersey Stage.

Disneyland Paris Says Its Upcoming Lion King Ride Will Be 'One of Its Biggest'
If you thought the opening of the World of Frozen was the peak of the Disneyland Paris transformation, think again. Disney has shared details for its upcoming Lion King water attraction, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious builds in the park's history. Already under construction since fall 2025 at the newly renamed Disney Adventure World, this experience will be the first-ever immersive land entirely dedicated to Simba’s journey.
Related: Disneyland Paris’ New ‘Up’ Ride Has a Name—and It’s a Love Letter to Adventure
View this post on Instagram The Main Event: A 52-Foot PlungeThe biggest win for thrill-seekers is the attraction’s physical scale. Guests will board boats and journey into the caves beneath a massive, 120-foot-high Pride Rock. The ride will feature three distinct slopes, culminating in an impressive 52-foot-high descent. It’s a significant addition to the park’s thrill portfolio, combining the emotional storytelling of the 1994 animated masterpiece with the adrenaline of a world-class water flume.

A "Circle of Life" Tech UpgradeThis won't be a simple "book-on-report" ride. Disney is utilizing state-of-the-art Audio-Animatronics and special effects to bring the Pride Lands to life. Guests will move through iconic musical sequences from the film, coming face-to-face with Simba, Nala and the rest of the Animal Kingdom in a way that feels immersive rather than just observational.
The attraction serves as the anchor for a brand-new "land" that includes themed dining, shopping and character meet-and-greets. It’s a massive piece of the creative vision that is effectively doubling the park’s footprint and reimagining nearly 90% of its current offerings.
The Transformation TimelineWhile the World of Frozen just opened as of March, the Lion King area represents the "next chapter" of the park's evolution. Following the recent news of the Wilderness Explorers Sky Swings (the Up-themed family attraction), the Pride Lands addition proves that Disney is leaning heavily into "Adventure" as the primary theme for its second gate.
The Take: For Disney fans, the move to Pride Rock is a long-overdue spotlight for a franchise that has dominated Broadway and the box office for decades but has lacked a dedicated "e-ticket" ride. By combining a 52-foot drop with Broadway-level tech, Disneyland Paris is ensuring that this won't just be a ride for kids—it will become the new "must-do" for every traveler heading to Europe.

Top-Selling Author Forced to Miss Book Fair for Legal Reasons
A beloved children’s writer missed one of the biggest moments of his career after being stopped from boarding a flight due to a passport issue, yet the day still ended with unexpected good news.
Michael Rosen, the famous author behind the classic We're Going on a Bear Hunt, was set to attend the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy. The 79-year-old writer had been shortlisted for the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award, one of the highest honors in children’s literature.
But instead of arriving at the event, Rosen was turned away at the airport gate due to a technical rule involving his passport.

According to The Independent, Rosen left his home early in the morning, traveled to Stansted Airport, and went through check-in and security without problems. The issue only appeared when he reached the boarding gate.
He explained what happened: “I go through the check-in and I go through security and I go through all that, finally get to the gate and present my passport and ticket.”
Airport staff checked his passport and found that it did not meet European Union travel rules for UK citizens. While his passport was still valid until 2026, it had been issued more than 10 years before his travel date, making it ineligible for entry under post-Brexit regulations.
The rule requires that passports must be issued less than 10 years before the date of entry, even if the expiry date is still valid.
Rosen admitted the mistake but explained why it happened: “You can tap me on the wrist, and say, ‘you fool Rosen – you should have read the regs’.”
“Well, there’s a simple reason for that: because I was a guest, I didn’t see any travel documents. They just sent me a ticket which I then popped into my wallet on my phone,” he added.
Event organizers had arranged his trip but were unaware of the unusual passport issue affecting some UK travelers.
Although he missed the event, Rosen’s day took a surprising turn when he received a phone call after returning home.
“There is a happy ending to this story,” he said. “I came home and one of the first calls that came in was an Italian lady telling me that I had won the Hans Christian Andersen Award.”
The award recognizes a lifetime of achievement in children’s literature, making it a major milestone in Rosen’s long career. He has written more than 200 books and is widely respected as a storyteller, poet, and educator.
Still, he admitted feeling a bit disappointed about missing the moment in person.
Ha! I’ve just been refused entry onto a plane from Stansted to Bologna because my passport issue date is March 2016. The expiry date is August 2026 but the rule is 10 years from issue date. Another Brexit benefit. Apparently. Go home now.
— Michael Rosen 💙💙🎓🎓 NICE 爷爷 (@MichaelRosenYes) April 13, 2026“I’m a little bit sad that I wasn’t at the announcement, to bask in the glory and all that,” he shared. “But I’ve had a happy day basking in that glory.”
Rosen also noted that because the trip was arranged for him, he did not lose money from the incident.
“If I had paid for the ticket… I would have been a little bit more miffed, but, as you can see, I’m still smiling.”

On this day in music history, Def Leppard released one of the classic '80s track that would help shape the hair metal era.
Exactly 38 years ago, the English rock band released on of the biggest singles of their career: "Pour Some Sugar On Me." Having already been included on their smash hit album Hysteria in 1987, the song took on a new life when it was officially released as a single on April 16, 1988.
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" would end up debuting on Billboard's Hot 100 just one week after its release and later climbed its way up to the No. 2 position, peaked in July 1988. It is one of Def Leppard's highest-charting singles on the Hot 100, behind the band's only No. 1 hit, "Love Bites."
"Pour Some Sugar On Me" spent a total of 24 weeks on the Hot 100, which is the longest run of any Def Leppard single on that chart.
It's been ranked on a number of music roundups, including VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s, with the classic Def Leppard track landing at No. 2 on that list, behind only Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer."

Lead singer Joe Elliot previously told New Zealand outlet Stuff.co.nzthat the band was just about done recording their fourth studio album Hysteria when he was fiddling around on the guitar, playing the chorus of "Pour Some Sugar On Me." When producer Robert Lange walked into the room, he knew the band had to record it, but Elliot was hesitant.
"We had been working on this album for two and a half years, they're not going to want to hear - 'hey we've got a new song,'" he recalled. "He suggested we get it as far as we could before they came back, so we stopped working on whatever we were doing and put a fresh piece of tape on the machine and literally built this song up from scratch."
A few days later, "We played the guys what we had," Elliot said. "The smiles broke out after about 45 seconds, luckily."
1980 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Dark Breakup Anthem
Released in 1980, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Joy Division remains one of the most haunting songs ever written about a relationship falling apart.
Rather than dramatizing a breakup, the track captures something more unsettling—the slow unraveling of two people who are still together but already emotionally distant. Lines about routine, resentment and a “bedroom so cold” paint a picture of love quietly eroding from the inside.
That emotional weight was drawn from real life. Frontman Ian Curtis wrote the lyrics during a period of personal turmoil, including the breakdown of his marriage and ongoing health struggles. The song was released just weeks after his death by suicide, adding an even deeper layer of meaning to its now-iconic chorus. Curtis died on May 18, 1980 at the age of just 23.
The track became Joy Division’s biggest hit, reaching No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart and eventually earning widespread recognition as one of the defining songs of its era. Over time, its legacy has only grown.
In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked “Love Will Tear Us Apart” among the 500 greatest songs of all time, placing it at No. 41 and writing that it "still hits like an ice pick aimed at your soul." The song has also topped major lists from outlets like NME, which once named it the greatest single ever released.
Part of what makes the song endure is its stark honesty. There’s no resolution, no sense of closure—just the recognition that something once meaningful is no longer working, even if neither person knows how to fix it.
The title itself carries an added layer of irony. Curtis reportedly came up with “Love Will Tear Us Apart” as a sardonic response to “Love Will Keep Us Together,” the upbeat 1975 hit by Captain & Tennille. In a fitting twist, Joy Division even recorded the track in the same studio where that earlier song had been made, underscoring the stark contrast between the two visions of love.
“Love Will Tear Us Apart” captures the quiet moment when a relationship has already slipped beyond repair, even if neither person has fully said it out loud.
More than four decades later, the track still resonates, giving listeners a stark portrait of love’s unraveling and the complicated emotions that come with it.
