Nancy Guthrie Update: Man Detained During Investigation Seeks Staggering Amount
A months-long investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has taken another turn—this time in the form of a multimillion-dollar legal claim.
Carlos Palazuelos, who was detained and later released during the investigation earlier this year, has filed a notice of claim against the Pima County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Chris Nanos and Detective Earl Gieron. Two others—Daniel and Josefina Maddoz—are also included in the filing, with the three collectively seeking $3.25 million.
According to the notice of claim, per ABC15 on Thursday, July 30, the family alleges investigators publicly connected Palazuelos to the high-profile case despite never charging him with a crime. The filing also argues authorities lacked probable cause to detain him and are seeking compensation for what they describe as lasting reputational and emotional harm.
Palazuelos' attorney has also called on the sheriff's office to publicly clear his client's name, arguing that the family continues to live with the fallout from the investigation months later.
The legal filing marks the latest development in the search for Guthrie, who disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home on January 31. Despite months of searching, the 84-year-old has not been found, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Earlier this week, Nancy's daughter, Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, shared another emotional video on Instagram pleading with anyone who knows what happened to come forward. "It has been months since our mom was taken from us," Savannah said. "Our family is in agony. We are in a nightmare that will not end."
She also addressed the person she believes knows where her mother is, saying, "So I'm asking you, begging you to do the right thing now. Make the right choice. Help us find her. Tell us where to look for her."
Savannah ended her message with one final appeal: "I truly believe it is never too late to do the right thing…Please make the right choice."
Under Arizona law, the county has 60 days to respond to the notice of claim before it can be considered rejected.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900 or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Nancy Guthrie Twist: Hair Sample DNA Results Deal Major Blow to Investigation
In a major Nancy Guthrie update, DNA results from a hair sample were revealed six months after Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother, 84, was abducted in Tucson, Ariz.
On Thursday, July 30, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that a hair sample from Nancy's home that underwent forensic testing came back inconclusive and pointed to no suspect.
"It came back with no results," he told CBS News, noting that the results were verified in early June.
However, Nanos also said that other DNA found at the scene is still being analyzed. "I know that there was blood at the scene, and so that was also part of the processing of the scene," he shared.
Nanos added, "We have a lot of DNA that is being looked at by credible scientists around the country who know and understand what they have in front of them, and they understand the rules that they have to play by."

It continued, “The analysis of DNA and digital evidence has been underway for the past six months. This work is complex and time-intensive, but the investigation continues to pursue every credible lead.”
Additionally, the PCSD urged "anyone with information" to "come forward and help bring this case to a resolution" by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI or 88-CRIME. Those calling 88-CRIME can remain anonymous.
Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on the evening of January 31. Despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward, no suspect has been named.

‘Cherry Pie’ Legend Makes Heartbreaking Health Admission Nearly 40 Years Later: ‘I’m Crumbling Inside’
Steven Sweet, the longtime Warrant drummer behind era-defining classics like “Cherry Pie,” “Heaven,” and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” revealed he’s “crumbling inside” years after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer.
In a recent interview with The Hair Metal Guru, per Blabbermouth, Sweet said the battle didn’t end when the cancer did.

Getting incredibly candid about his many health issues, including the effects of the moderately aggressive prostate cancer he was diagnosed with in November 2018, Sweet said he has been cancer-free since the surgery, but the aftereffects are taking their toll.
“When you have your prostate removed, as a guy—not that nobody tells you—but it doesn't really sink in what that affects in the long run and what that means to you as a guy,” he said, explaining that the surgery can affect both urinary control and sexual function because of the delicate nerves and structures involved.
Though many of those side effects can improve over time, Sweet said adapting to life after surgery has been one of his biggest challenges, especially since the health problems have continued and even sprouted anew. In addition to another spinal fusion two weeks after his prostate was removed, he’s now dealing with arthritis, joint issues, and a torn bicep that’s inoperable.
“I like to put on a good façade,” he said. “I'm crumbling inside in other ways. I still have massive shoulder issues. I have massive hand arthritis issues. I had a hip replacement two years ago. What else? It's always ongoing. I ruptured a bicep tendon, which means my bicep is half hanging on my arm now, so it just doesn't end.”
But no amount of pain can keep Sweet away from the drum kit. He said he’ll keep drumming and churning out hits as long as his body allows, torn bicep/busted shoulder or not. Working through the pain is just part of the job to him, although he said his bicep and shoulder issues have no bearing on his drum-playing talent.
“[Former NFL quarterback] John Elway won two Super Bowls with a torn bicep,” Sweet said. “So if he can do it, I can do it. … I will go as long as I can.”
Sweet, who took over the drums from original member Max Asher in 1986, helped Warrant become one of the defining hard rock/glam metal bands of the ’80s, selling millions of albums thanks to their era-defining records, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich and Cherry Pie.

The current lineup includes Robert Mason on lead vocals, Joey Allen and Erik Turner on guitar, Jerry Dixon on bass, and Sweet still on the drums. Despite the surgeries and chronic pain, Sweet has no plans to stop playing. He’ll be on that kit “till forever.”

On super busy days, I'm always happy when I find a Vegan Tikka Masala with Cumin Rice in my freezer. In fact, I ate one today after getting home from my Trader Joe's run! Considering it's frozen, this meal is surprisingly flavorful; plus, the wheat-based vegan meat is pretty dang filling.
3. Korean Beefless BulgogiSophie Hirsh
Made of textured soy protein, the Korean Beefless Bulgogi is perfectly sweet and rich. It's super simple to make, and it's great for bulking up a stir fry or just serving on the side of some rice.

In fact, I'm such a fan of the vegan fried rice offerings at Trader Joe's that this one of two fried rices on this list.
5. Bubble WafflesSophie Hirsh
If you're a fan of mochi, you'll love the Bubble Waffles, which feature crispy edges and a mochi-esque texture in the middle. According to Trader Joe's, these waffles are known as gai daan zai in Cantonese.

I like this frozen meal because it can be made in just two minutes in the microwave—and you can also take it the next level by frying it in a pan after microwaving.

The shelf-stable Organic Sri Lankan Curry & Rice is actually an all-in-one kit for making curry. It comes with three packets: one with rice, one with curry and another with fresh cashews. This is one of my favorite options for traveling!

The frozen Jumeokbap comes with three triangular Korean rice balls, each featuring seasoned rice, veggies and Beefless Bulgogi. Fifty-six years ago, the beloved '70s vocal family band The Osmonds released "One Bad Apple," a song that went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 with a lead singer who was only 17 years old.
Released on November 14, 1970, as the lead single from their self-titled studio album, "One Bad Apple" became a massive hit. Two months after its arrival, it entered the Hot 100, climbing up the chart until it hit No. 1 on February 13, 1971 for a staggering five week reign. The song marked their first major mainstream breakthrough as a band, becoming the most notable single of their career.
Aside from chart success, the song also achieved major commercial triumph. In February 1971, it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 1 million copies in the U.S. The track's ability to move substantial audiences solidified the group as up-and-coming superstars.

Salmonella Outbreak Doubles in Size, Source Still Unknown
It’s always scary when there’s an outbreak with no known source. The Salmonella outbreak, which was first reported on July 23, 2026, has now doubled in size.
The Food and Drug Administration reports that the number of Salmonella Javiana infections now sits at 212 patients. Just last week, 106 patients were infected. However, the most concerning part is that the source still hasn’t been confirmed.
The FDA has now initiated traceback and testing, but it has not confirmed the food that is being included in either of those. This tracing started when the outbreaks were first reported last week, and so far, there has been no comment on potential sources.
We have reached out to see if there are any other updates about the source, and we will update if one comes through.
All the FDA can recommend is to look out for any signs of the infection. They can include diarrhea, fever and chills, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, and it can take anywhere between six hours and six days after the exposure.
In the past, Salmonella Javiana outbreaks have been linked to fruits and seafood. In 2016, there was an outbreak in Arizona that was linked to a seafood restaurant, which started with two people and increased by another six, and this was traced back to various fish items.
Toward the end of 2019, an outbreak started due to cut fruit. It led to 165 people being infected with Salmonella Javiana across 14 different states, and that was linked back to fruit produced by Tailor Cut Produce, leading to a recall of the Fruit Luau cut fruit mix, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and pineapple products.
The current outbreak of Salmonella Javiana is not the only situation to be aware of. There is also an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes, which has increased to nine cases with no source named; an outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg, which has increased to 90 cases; and an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis.
The latter has been linked to eggs, and shell eggs from Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. have been recalled. Last week, an outbreak of Cyclospora was linked to iceberg lettuce.

Barry Williams Performs ‘Brady Bunch' Classic—With '90s Rock Legends
Barry Williams stunned fans at a Lollapalooza aftershow, performing one of the songs he made famous on The Brady Bunch more than 50 years ago.
The actor, 71, was a surprise guest at the Smashing Pumpkins’ July 29 show at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago, where he performed “It's a Sunshine Day,” the “hit” he first sang with his Brady co-stars in 1973.
In a clip shared to Instagram and other social media platforms, Williams, who played rock star wannabe Greg Brady on the classic TV sitcom, was seen performing the song onstage with the ‘90s alt rockers as the crowd sang along and backup dancers showed off their ‘70s-style moves.

Williams debuted “It's a Sunshine Day” in the January 1973 Brady Bunch episode titled “Amateur Nite” alongside co-stars Maureen McCormick, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Mike Lookinland and Susan Olsen. But Johnny Bravo didn’t pen the song. “It's a Sunshine Day” was written by Stephen McCarthy, according to Songfacts, and it appeared on the 1972 album, The Kids From The Brady Bunch.
In the "Amateur Hour" episode, the Brady kids famously performed the song on a TV talent show to raise money to buy their parents (Robert Reed, Florence Henderson) a silver platter for their anniversary. Unfortunately, they lost out to a group of singing dogs, but Williams' Lollapalooza cameo was definitely a win for fans decades later.
Williams’ surprise musical gig may have been cooked up after he sat down with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan for The Magnificent Otherspodcast in May. During the chat, the two stars talked about being recognized in public, with Williams revealing fans often call him Greg.
“I'm the ‘rat in the cage’ guy. That's what I get in airports,” Corgan told The Brady Bunch star, referencing a line from the Smashing Pumpkins classic, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings."

Lindsay Clancy Trial: First Responders Detail Scene At Duxbury Home
Several first responders, including police officers and paramedics, testified during the third day of Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, is being charged with murdering her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan — in January 2023. She pleaded not guilty, with her defense team arguing that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the crime. However, prosecutors argue that she acted intentionally and is criminally responsible for killing her three children.
Following the murders, Clancy tried to kill herself, cutting her wrists and jumping out of the second-story window. Her husband found her in the backyard of their home, which is when he called 911.
A total of 10 first responders testified on Thursday, July 30, recounting what they saw at her Duxbury home when they found her three children killed in the basement. According to PEOPLE, among those who testified were Duxbury police officers Stephen Hall and Brian Josephine, who said that they responded to the home following the 911 call.
Specifically, Josephine said that Patrick was in the basement and yelled, "She killed the (expletive) kids.” He then saw Dawson first, immediately bringing him upstairs to paramedics. He then returned to the basement, where he saw Cora and Callan. Patrick Dwyer, a firefighter and paramedic, then testified that he tried to revive Cora, while his partner Jennifer Stratton went to Callan, who had "deep strangulation marks" on his neck.
The 911 call was also played in court, with NBC 10 Boston further reporting that Clancy started sobbing when listening to the recording, which lasted roughly seven minutes.

World's 'Number One' Restaurant Reopening This Summer with New Menu Every Month
Noma, an upscale restaurant that even blew notorious street-food carnivore Anthony Bourdain out of the water on a 2013 episode of Parts Unknown, is set to reopen in August after some inner conflicts forced the world's "number one"'" restaurant to close its doors.
The August 5 reopening is bittersweet, as allegations against Founding Chef René Redzepi resurfaced, triggering a PR nightmare. Redzepi will not be back at the helm after those "inner conflicts" leaked out, where alleged abusive practices were framed as the driving force for his team's impeccable creativity.
A March New York Times article noted that dozens of past employees said that the celebrated chef inflicted both physical and psychological damage "on the staff for years."
He has since issued a tearful public apology, but stepped back for the sake of the restaurant's future.
Now, the world-renowned Copenhagen-based eatery is back with a brand new look — literally.
After pushing the reset button, Noma's menu is going to be ever-changing, meaning if you're lucky enough to book a table, you can delight your tastebuds with a masterclass of seasonal dishes 12 times per year.
Noma made its name foraging only local ingredients and leaving patrons' jaws on the floor with the precision of each dish — and that identity of pioneering New Nordic cuisine isn't going anywhere.

‘Star Trek,’ Ranked Among the Greatest Shows of All Time, Returns to TV 57 Years After Final Episode
In celebration of Star Trek’s 60th anniversary, the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner, is returning to MeTV for a special marathon of the fan-favorite show.
The show, which was named one of the greatest shows of all time by Rolling Stone in 2016, will begin its MeTV marathon on Sept. 6. The channel will show every episode of the original Star Trek TV series over six consecutive days, beginning with “The Man Trap,” the first broadcast episode.
The Star Trek festivities continue on Sept. 8 at 7 a.m. (ET) when Shatner will join Toon In With Me host Bill Leff and his sidekick Toony the Tuna. Together, they’ll discuss Shatner’s current projects as well as the legacy of Star Trek. A separate marathon will be on MeTV Toons, which will play six back-to-back episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series on Sept. 5.
Star Trek, which still airs reruns on MeTV every Saturday night, originally premiered on NBC on Sept. 8, 1966. 60 years later, the Star Trek universe continues to grow with Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which premiered its fourth season last week.
In a recent interview with Anson Mount, who plays Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the actor revealed that he’s been honored to step into the role of the beloved character in the modern day.
“It’s been a tremendous honor, one of the biggest honors of my career and one of the finest jobs in my career, maybe the finest,” Mount said to Decider. “You learn in this business to not have any expectations, but to also never say never. And really, anything can happen. You don’t know. So you never just say never and you see what the universe tosses your way. But it is heady to think that I’m part of this franchise that has almost nine hundred episodes produced over the years. I just feel lucky and I’m happy for what I got.”

We've all encountered people who pry a little too much into our lives—be it at work, while at a family event or just while you're out with friends. But if the questions ever cross the line, there's onephrase you can say to help deflect any offensive questions, according to psychologists.
Parade spoke with two experts on the topic: Dr. Patricia Dixon, a licensed clinical psychologist, and Dr. Lily Kaufmann, a licensed clinical psychologist and anxiety specialist. Both of them agreed that there's one key way to respond to offensive questions that is better than others, no matter who in your life is asking them. It's worth noting that the way they advise handling rude questions assumes you'd like to keep the relationship overall, while setting a boundary on this specific topic. But Dr. Kaufmann notes that you can also choose to cut ties, depending on the circumstances.
"No one is entitled to information about you that you don't want to share, and you don't have to stay in a situation where someone has seriously crossed your boundaries," she says, adding, "You get to decide whether it's worth trying to salvage the situation or whether you need to walk away."
If you'd like to set up a boundary and work on your assertive communication skills while maintaining that relationship, you can start with the phrase that both psychologists recommend.

What Is Considered an Offensive Question?"Questions become offensive when they cross another person’s boundaries," explains Dr. Kaufmann. She says the topic could be too personal, or even the way the question is asked can be disrespectful.
"Language itself can be offensive, as can nonverbal cues such as tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions and body postures," she shares.
Whether something is offensive can also come down to who is asking it.
"You’re probably going to have different boundaries with friends than with work colleagues," the psychologist states.
On that note, Dr. Dixon suggests that you "consider the relationship and the context before diving into the subject matter." With friends, she warns against giving "unwanted advice about major decisions they’re making in their relationships, families or lives."
For those who work in an office, she notes that you should consider the work culture.
"Something that may feel appropriate in a hyper casual coworking space will probably seem prying in a corporate office," she says.
She adds that setting boundaries with family members can be slightly more difficult.
"Familiarity and inherent trust can allow for more probing questions or blunt feedback than you would dare with friends, but that doesn’t mean you can ask or say everything," she explains.

The Best Phrase To Say When Someone Asks an Offensive Question, According to PsychologistsIf you're trying to figure out what to say when someone asks an inappropriate question, both Dr. Dixon and Dr. Kaufmann suggest flipping the offensive question by asking about its intent. Dr. Dixon says you can say something like, "I’m sorry, can you tell me what you mean by that?" or even just, "What makes you ask?" as Dr. Kaufmann suggests.
"[It] offers the opportunity for someone to take a step back and recognize that what they just said was offensive. It offers an opportunity for them to correct the offense," says Dr. Dixon.
Dr. Kaufmann adds that by questioning the question, "it gives you space to decide whether or not you actually want to answer the question, and it gives the other person a chance to pause and consider the question they’ve asked."
She continues, "Maybe they’ll realize they crossed a line, maybe they’ll provide more information or rephrase the question in a less offensive way or maybe they’ll back away from it altogether."

When To Use This Phrase After an Offensive Question or CommentDr. Dixon says that the best thing about asking what someone meant is that it doesn't "accuse or attack the person," which makes it handy for using with important relationships.
"You are simply requesting further explanation," she explains. "In many cases, people realize how it came across when they have to say their reasoning aloud. You didn’t even have to point it out."
She adds, "This phrase can be used in the moment or you can come back to it later. Both approaches offer the opportunity for the individual to really grasp that what they said was inappropriate."
She says that "addressing it right away captures the intensity of the moment." But if you'd like to take a moment to process, she says you can ask later, "What did you mean earlier when you said…?"
Dr. Dixon also says that "coming back to something after the fact at times can be even more powerful than calling someone out on it right away."
"It allows the comment to resonate with you, and gives you time to process what it is that was offensive," she adds. "It also offers the person an opportunity to reflect instead of getting defensive."

When Not To Use This PhraseDr. Kaufmann says asking for clarity about the question is helpful for relationships you care about maintaining.
"In some situations, though, being direct and giving clear feedback may become more important than preserving politeness or relationship goodwill," she explains. "If someone says something highly offensive or deliberately hurtful, it could be worth using more direct language to let them know that what they said isn’t okay."
She says you can also use the phrase, "I’m not going to answer that," to maintain your boundary, and then change the subject if you still want to stay in the conversation.
How To Handle Inappropriate Questions by Situation1. At work"When in doubt, redirect back to the work itself," says Dr. Kaufmann. She says you can say phrases like, "Let’s stick with the task at hand" or, "I don’t want to get too far off course."
Dr. Dixon adds that you can also reach out to your HR department "if someone continues to overstep your boundaries."
2. With friendsDr. Dixon recommends being direct with your friends about your boundaries.
"Tell your friend when they’ve crossed it," she says, adding, "Remember that your friendship is important, while making it clear you need to be respected from here on out."
3. With family"Boundaries are important here as well, but your family will likely require more explanation," says Dr. Dixon. "Along with stating your boundary, you can explain how what they said made you feel and why this boundary is important to you. You can be direct while still validating the relationship and the dynamic that family brings."
If your relationships with family members are more strained, Dr. Kaufmann says you can use "more neutral language and move the conversation along" with phrases like, "I’d prefer not to discuss that" or, "Let’s talk about something else."
4. With strangers"Keep it brief and neutral if you'd like to minimize conflict [with strangers], or provide direct feedback if something has really hurt you or gone against your values," says Dr. Kaufmann.
5. In all situationsUltimately, Dr. Dixon states: "You never have to subject yourself to discomfort because someone else behaved inappropriately. You can stand up for your needs and feelings and still have healthy relationships."
