Long before dessert-flavored sodas and dirty drinks became the latest beverage craze, there was the root beer float. According to popular lore, the iconic treat was born in 1893 when Cripple Creek, Colorado, soda fountain owner Frank J. Wisner looked toward the snow-capped peak of Cow Mountain and was inspired to drop a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a glass of root beer. He reportedly called the creation the "Black Cow," and more than 130 years later, the simple combination of frosty root beer and creamy vanilla ice cream remains one of the most nostalgic treats you can order.

It was a soda fountain favorite that has now been enjoyed for generations, and few brands are more closely connected to that tradition than A&W. The company has been serving root beer floats in its restaurants for decades, making the creamy classic just as recognizable as its signature root beer. So when A&W announced a new limited-edition Root Beer Float soda, it didn't feel like a random company chasing the latest flavor trend. Instead, it felt like a brand taking one of its best-known menu items and asking a simple question: What if you could enjoy this flavor without the actual ice cream?

The timing certainly doesn't hurt. Dessert-inspired soft drinks, dirty sodas and nostalgic flavors continue to have a moment, with brands leaning into familiar comfort foods in new ways. But unlike many of those releases, A&W's latest flavor feels rooted in something the company has been associated with for generations rather than a fleeting social media trend.

Of course, recreating a root beer float is about more than adding vanilla flavor to root beer. The appeal comes from the way creamy vanilla ice cream slowly melts into the crisp, bubbly soda, creating a drink that's richer, smoother and unmistakably different from plain root beer.

That's not an easy experience to recreate in a can, which made me curious enough to pick one up. I decided to do a taste test of the A&W Root Beer Float soda and find out whether A&W could actually pull it off. Here's what I thought.

What Is the A&W Root Beer Float?

The A&W Root Beer Float is a limited-edition soft drink available in both regular and Zero Sugar varieties. Instead of requiring a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the soda builds that flavor directly into the drink with what the company describes as a "vanilla-kissed" finish designed to mimic a traditional root beer float.

The result is meant to capture the familiar combination of spicy root beer and creamy vanilla in a ready-to-drink format. It's a simple concept, but one that comes with high expectations. Anyone who has ever ordered a real root beer float knows the experience isn't just about sweetness—it's about balance. The vanilla should soften the root beer without overwhelming it, creating the rich, creamy finish that makes the dessert so iconic.

What I Thought of A&W's Root Beer Float

I'll admit, I went into this expecting to be disappointed.

Too often, dessert-inspired sodas lean so heavily on sweetness that it overwhelms the flavor they're trying to replicate. I figured this would be another overly sugary, artificial vanilla-tasting soda with a hint of root beer. A novelty that would be interesting for a sip or two before becoming too much.

That was not the case this time.

From the first sip, it's apparent the root beer is still very much the star. It has the familiar herbal, slightly spicy flavor A&W fans already know, but it's softened by a creamy vanilla finish that develops as you drink it. While one TikTok reviewer noted traces of butterscotch, I found it leaned more toward vanilla, with perhaps just a hint of caramel on the finish.

Rather than tasting like someone pumped vanilla syrup into a can of root beer, the flavors blended together in a way that's surprisingly balanced.

The biggest surprise was how restrained the the whole thing is. The vanilla ice cream flavor is there, but it never overwhelms the drink or turns it into a liquid dessert. Instead, it lingers at the end of each sip, creating a smooth, almost melted ice cream finish that genuinely brings a root beer float to mind.

Of course, no canned soda can completely recreate the experience of a fresh scoop of ice cream slowly melting into your float. You're still missing the thick, frothy head that forms when vanilla ice cream meets carbonated root beer, along with the changing texture as the ice cream slowly melts into the drink. That's part of what makes the dessert so special.

Still, A&W comes much closer than I expected. Rather than trying to imitate every part of the experience, it focuses on the flavor profile—and for the most part, it succeeds. By dialing back the sweetness and letting the root beer remain the foundation, the company has created something that feels more like a variation rather than a gimmick.

If you already enjoy A&W Root Beer, there's a good chance you'll appreciate this version as well. The vanilla adds just enough richness to make it feel different without losing the character that made the original flavor so popular in the first place.

Is A&W's Root Beer Float Worth Trying?

If you're expecting a carbonated milkshake, you'll probably be disappointed. But if you're hoping for a root beer with a creamy vanilla finish that genuinely reminds you of a classic float, the A&W Root Beer Float soda delivers surprisingly well.

I finished the can pleasantly surprised. What I expected to be an overly sweet novelty soda turned out to be a balanced, easy-drinking take on a nostalgic favorite. It won't replace the real thing, but it's not trying to. But for a tasty drink that comes with a kiss of nostalgia, it captures enough of that iconic float flavor to make picking a bottle or can up before it's gone worth it.

For a limited-edition release, it's one of the more successful dessert-inspired sodas I've tried, and one I'd happily buy again.

Bunnie XO is making major career moves following her divorce from Jelly Roll.

According to a source who spoke with People, the podcast host and Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic author is already setting her sights on her next chapter in entertainment.

“She’s in Los Angeles meeting with producers for her potential reality show,” the source says. “She’s taking a ton of meetings. She’s meetings with agents and TV agents and production companies. So she’s going full-blown Hollywood.”

The insider added that Bunnie is "go-go-go" when it comes to expanding her empire.

Jelly Roll filed for divorce from Bunnie in May, and the split was finalized on July 17.

Although they do not share any biological children, they have previously been open about their IVF journey, which Bunnie has said they plan to continue despite their divorce. Jelly Roll shares daughter Bailee Ann with his ex, Felicia Beckwith, and son Noah Buddy with Melisa Ann Cowell.

Bunnie's latest career moves come as speculation surrounding the reason for the couple's split continues to swirl, fueled in part by comments made by Jelly Roll's daughter, Bailee, during a TikTok Live earlier this month.

“Y’all have no f–-king idea what happened, and wait ’till y’all find out. Just f–-king wait,” Bailee said during a TikTok Live posted on July 19. “Because I promise y’all, the view of what y’all have of not only the situation, but their relationship and the internet in totality is about to f–-king crumble the day that I open my mouth.”

Bunnie later pushed back on the speculation, denying that Bailee's comments were directed at her.

"She didn’t say anything lol [people] just wanna run [with] a narrative," Bunnie said of her former stepdaughter's video. "Love my baby forever."

Starbucks' fall 2026 menu caused a stir after a fan-favorite drink was reportedly missing from its lineup.

Starbucks' Apple Crisp Drinks Were Notably Missing

Notably missing from the fall 2026 menu at Starbucks, however, were its Apple Crisp drinks. In fall 2025, the coffee chain brought back the Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso following online fan outrage. Apple Crisp debuted in 2021, leaving menus in 2024.

It's possible that Starbucks will bring back Apple Crisp for a limited time during a second fall menu drop, just like it did last year.

Additionally, the Starbucks fall 2026 lineup will reportedly include the return of its Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin, as well as a Hedgehog Cake Pop and a Chicken Bacon Protein Pocket.

Parade reached out to Starbucks for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

Starbucks Customers Shared Mixed Reactions to the Fall 2026 Menu

Later, Devo posted a video with descriptions of the fall 2026 drinks coming to Starbucks.

In the comments, followers shared their reactions to the reported menu, with one Instagram user declaring, "Ah, excited that pecan crunch is back and excited to try the banana bread latte 😍."

Another exclaimed, "Yay!!!!! Super excited for this!"

Someone else shared, "Patiently waiting til August 25th, I've been wanting Starbucks to make a pumpkin cream shaken espresso for years."

Meanwhile, a different follower demanded, "WHERE IS OUR APPLE CRISP!!!!"

A second echoed, "Terrible menu! Not everyone likes pumpkin. Banana isn’t even fall. I miss apple."

Yet another Instagram user agreed, lamenting, "APPLE??? 🍏 no caramel apple 😢."

When Is the Starbucks 2026 Fall Menu Release Date?

"This menu is speculated to drop at Starbucks locations nationwide on August 25th," Devo shared in his original post. "Stay tuned for any updates!"

To reach what could be considered perfection in a movie is a daunting task, especially in the horror genre. For one, not everyone can stomach the intense, often gory genre. Also, not every scare or dark metaphor will have the same impact on every viewer.

That being said, the publication Collider recently released a list of the "6 most perfect horror movies released since 2000." According to the publication, the top 21st-century horror movies include 2017's Get Out, Sinners from 2025, and The Babadook, released in 2014. Collider named the 2002 Danny Boyle zombie classic, 28 Days Later, as the "most perfect horror movie released since 2000." The publication reported that the film, which has spawned several equally intense sequels, helped make modern audiences have a reverence for zombie movies.

Danny Boyle Shared What He Most Appreciated About the '28 Days Later' Script

In a 2002 interview speaking about 28 Days Later, which stars Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy as Jim, Boyle shared he was interested in making the film after reading Alex Garland's script. He said that he appreciated the film's "idea that there's a psychological virus [that] causes this apocalypse."

"We've all seen movies about biological viruses being released and causing mayhem and stuff like this. But there was this premise in it, this slightly projected premise, this sci-fi idea that it's a psychological virus," explained the British filmmaker.

In addition, Boyle said he believed the virus mirrors certain social issues.

"But the idea, and that it was linked to rage or this social intolerance that is everywhere, now appears to be everywhere, certainly in this country, certainly in Britain, and that somehow that this might escape and run rampant across the country and create these monsters that just kill people," said Boyle during the 2002 interview. "And that the monsters are us, really, in a way that there's not something that we can blame on something else, like, aliens or something terrible mutation of biology. This is actually something that comes out of what we're like."

Glee star Kevin McHale is calling out fans who claim the show is cursed following the deaths of three of its main cast members.

The hit musical comedy-drama aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015. During the series run, Cory Monteith died at age 31 from a drug overdose in 2013. In the years following the show's conclusion, Mark Salling died by suicide in 2018 and Naya Rivera died in an accidental drowning in 2020.

On Wednesday, July 29, McHale, who portrayed Artie Abrams on the series, shared a rare and emotional response to the long-running "Glee curse" theory in a post on X.

"let me log off today because the way too many of you talk about real people who have passed as a 'sacrifice' or a 'curse' in regards to a tv show is f--king diabolical and untethered from any sort of humanity or reality," McHale wrote. "get f--ked."

Fans quickly rallied behind the actor in the replies, agreeing that referring to the deaths as part of a "curse" is insensitive.

"I'm so sorry, man. I cannot even fathom what that's like when you and your other cast members have lost your sweet friends the way you have," one fan wrote. "People act like what it said on the internet doesn't affect people in real life. It makes me sad."

"I think, sometimes, folks trying to make sense of occurrences that truly don’t make sense, draw absurd conclusions without considering the way it might affect others," said another. "I hope you and your IRL people continue to be a support system to each other."

"I’ve always HATED seeing people talk about this," added a third. "It’s so f--king disrespectful to their memory and to their families and friends. I’ve always spoken up about it, and I’ll keep saying how cruel and thoughtless it is. It pisses me off so much!!!!!"

McHale's comments come shortly after Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed that he has considered rebooting the series.

“That show is interesting because it’s come back around,” he said in an interview with People. “So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.’”

“My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity,'” he continued. “So yeah, I love that show and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people.”

Beginning Aug. 3, Fly By Jing is bringing its popular Chili Crisp Noodles to Costco stores for the first time, giving members a chance to stock up at a significant discount.

More than half a century after first making his mark on the music world, Rick Wakeman is preparing to release another ambitious studio album.

The legendary keyboardist has announced Return to the Red Planet, a new instrumental concept album due Oct. 24 via Fragile Records. The project serves as a sequel to his 2020 release The Red Planet and continues the science fiction-inspired storytelling that has become one of Wakeman's trademarks.

According to the announcement, Return to the Red Planet explores humanity's fascination with Mars through a sweeping collection of keyboard-driven compositions. Wakeman performs on piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron, Minimoog, and a host of other vintage and modern instruments, blending progressive rock with orchestral and cinematic influences.

"Once I started looking at the new data and photographs, I realized there was an entirely new album waiting to be written," Wakeman said in a statement. "There was simply too much more to say about Mars — musically and spiritually — not to return."

The album also reunites Wakeman with several longtime collaborators.

Joining him on the record are guitarist Dave Colquhoun, bassist Lee Pomeroy, and vocalist Hayley Sanderson, along with members of the English Rock Ensemble. Together, they help bring Wakeman's latest musical journey to life across an expansive collection of new compositions.

"They work together so well," Wakeman told Louder. "They bounce off each other. Conkers [Adam Falkner, drums] would say to Lee [Pomeroy] – who's known as The Oracle – 'If I do this here, why don't you do something like that there?' And they'd go, 'That’s a good idea.' Then Dave [Colquhoun] would go, 'Well, if you're going to do that, I'll do this.'"

For Wakeman, the release adds another chapter to a remarkable career that began 57 years ago.

After emerging as one of Britain's most sought-after session musicians in the late 1960s, he became an integral member of Yes, contributing to landmark progressive rock albums including Fragile, Close to the Edge, and Tales from Topographic Oceans. Alongside his work with the band, Wakeman built a celebrated solo career through elaborate concept albums such as The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and most recently, The Red Planet.

"A couple of years before [The Red Planet] [a friend and astrophysicist Garik Israelian] mentioned to me that 2021 would be the 50th anniversary of man arriving at Mars," Wakeman told Arcana FM. "He said, 'It does look like your old friend David Bowie was right, there was life on Mars. A few billion years ago there were oceans and rivers. It didn't have the atmosphere we've got but the new pictures, which will all be available online in a year or so, are phenomenal'. I went very quiet, and said, 'You’ve just given me the concept I've been searching for.' That's when it all started."

Widely regarded as one of progressive rock's greatest keyboard players, Wakeman has continued recording, touring, broadcasting, and composing well into his seventies. His ability to blend classical influences with rock instrumentation has made him one of the genre's most enduring and influential figures.

Fifty-seven years after beginning his recording career, Rick Wakeman continues to look toward the future instead of the past. With Return to the Red Planet, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer is once again inviting listeners on an imaginative musical voyage, proving his creative spirit remains as boundless as ever.

Forbes just released their list of the highest-paid podcasters of 2026, and with a reported $82 million in earnings, Joe Rogan is at the top. But it looks like another celeb just doesn’t get the podcaster's appeal.

Comedian Chelsea Handler replied to Forbes’Instagram post of the list, bashing Rogan: “Who is paying Joe Rogan 82 million? Give that to our vets, or our children! 82 million to be completely uninformed and say ‘whoopsie doodle’ every time he’s wrong, which is frequent?” 

Of course, her comment didn’t go unnoticed, and critics pounced on the slam with snap-backs of their own, such as, “You’re quite successful are you going to give up a part of your fortune or just count other peoples money and tell them what to do with it?”, “He doesn’t suggest anyone do what he says or should feel how he feels. He has people on he finds interesting and has a conversation. Why does that bother you? Your comments seem to stem from being bitter!” and “How about you lead what you are preaching about by giving your fortunes to needy people.”

This isn’t exactly the first time Rogan has caused controversy. His conservative commentary, outspoken guests (on ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’), and vaccine skepticism have all given the public pause and led to other celebs speaking out against him. 

In 2022, iconic musician Neil Young removed his tracks from Spotify in protest of Rogan’s podcast (which is also on Spotify). At the time, Young posted a letter on his website reading, “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”

While Handler bashed Rogan’s place as the highest-paid podcaster of 2026, she didn’t have anything else to say about the other people on Forbes list. At least, not publicly and not yet.

As of now, Rogan has not replied to Handler’s comment.

Kate Middleton has reclaimed the top spot on Tatler's annual best-dressed list for 2026. The magazine named her "Britain's chicest figure" and praised her fashion choices for lighting up royal occasions. The line that matters most followed: Tatler called her "back to health and back to being a Brit-fashion heroine." It's Kate's second time topping the list after 2022. But her clothes have never just been about fashion and this year more than any other they've been about something bigger.

Kate spent much of 2024 out of public view during her cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. She announced her remission in early 2025 and slowly returned to a fuller schedule of royal duties. Her first overseas royal visit since the diagnosis came in 2026: Reggio Emilia in northern Italy where she studied the region's trailblazing approach to early childhood education.

Tatler was particularly taken with two standout looks: a sunny yellow Roksanda outfit at Royal Ascot and a sharp Blazé Milano blazer from her Italy tour. Her Roland Mouret blush tea dress at Peter and Harriet Phillips' wedding was absolutely "divine." At the Nigerian state banquet in March she paired Queen Mary's Lover's Knot tiara with an emerald green Andrew Gn gown, widely read as a deliberate nod to the colors of Nigeria's flag. Across every occasion the message was the same: she's back.

This approach to royal dressing didn't start with Kate. It started with Queen Elizabeth. She chose to wear bright colors specifically so she could be seen by people standing 15 deep in a crowd. In the documentary The Queen at 90, Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh explained it: "She needs to stand out for people to be able to say 'I saw the Queen.'

Someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen's hat as she went past." Kate follows the same logic. Wearing bright colors at royal events isn't a personal style preference. It's a job requirement. She inherited the rule. She's been applying it all year.

Princess Diana understood this before Kate did. The tiara Kate wore at the Nigerian state banquet was Diana's favorite. The visual language Kate uses was partly inherited from her too.

The clothes have been saying things all year. When Prince Andrew was arrested in February 2026 Kate wore recycled outfits in the immediate aftermath. Stylist Lisa Talbot told the Daily Mail this was "very intentional." "Rewearing subtly communicates steadiness and humility," Talbot explained. "It signals continuity, responsibility and respect for the moment. In situations where public sensitivity is heightened the most powerful style statement can often be restraint."

When the royal family is under scrutiny the clothes become the message. Kate's response was to choose familiar pieces from her wardrobe and keep redirecting the focus on her role and her duties rather than what she was wearing. Her most repeated pieces include her Penelope Chilvers long tassel boots and an Alexander McQueen coat she's worn three times. Every repeated outfit is a deliberate communication. Every new outfit is too.

The Best-Dressed Title Is the Least Interesting Part of the Story

Kate took back the Tatler title from 2025 dual winners Lady Lola Bute and Jazzy de Lisser. In 2024, while Kate was in treatment, Princess Beatrice claimed the top spot. Tatler called Beatrice the "princess of perfection" and a "beacon of sartorial elegance." Kate wasn't competing that year. She was recovering. This year's list also includes NHS doctor Dr Raj Arora at No. 2, British athlete Temi Ojroa at No. 3, Dua Lipa's brother Gjin Lipa at No. 5 and Bridgerton actress, Hannah Dodd at No. 10.

What makes Kate's 2026 fashion choices so cohesive is something no label can provide. It's the consistency of the message: she's present, she's stable, and she's most definitely back. The best-dressed title is the most visible proof of that. But what the clothes are actually saying is more important than any ranking.

Kate Middleton spent 2024 largely out of public view. She announced remission in early 2025. Nancy Guthrie has been missing for six months, but one reporter who has followed the case from the very beginning believes investigators may be closer to a breakthrough than many people realize.

While no suspect has been publicly identified and authorities have released few details in recent months, the investigation remains active. According to NewsNation's Brian Entin, all it may take is a single credible tip—or a long-awaited DNA match—for the case to take a dramatic turn.

"Any day now something could happen," he told The Hollywood Reporter. “All it takes, and it sounds cheesy, and you always hear this, but all it takes is like that one person to call in something, or them to get some kind of DNA match, which they’re still working on behind the scenes. So I do—I think before the one-year mark, there’ll be some kind of significant progress. That’s just what my gut says."

Entin's comments come around the same time as investigators confirmed that a hair sample collected from Nancy Guthrie's Arizona home was not a DNA match to a suspect.

"All hair had been resolved and it does not point to a suspect," the FBI's Phoenix office told NBC News on Thursday, July 30. Meanwhile, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told the outlet "to find DNA on hair is extremely rare. Hair doesn’t produce DNA like touch DNA or bodily fluids."

Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Feb. 1. Authorities believe that she was abducted from her home in the middle of the night.

Bill Berry rose to fame as the iconic drummer and co-founder of one of the most influential rock bands of the 1980s.

Born on July 31, 1958, in Duluth, Minn., Berry celebrates his 68th birthday in 2026. The musician, who started playing the drums at just nine years old, is best known for being the co-founder of R.E.M. alongside lead vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills.

R.E.M. released its first single, "Radio Free Europe," in 1981. The track shaped the band's career and led to the four-piece signing a record deal with I.R.S. Records. Two years later, in 1983, the debut album, Murmur, was released, achieving critical acclaim and peaking at No. 36 on the Billboard 200.

The band's first chart-topping album, 1991's Out of Time, featured the hit single "Losing My Religion." At the 1992 Grammy Awards, R.E.M. won in three categories, with the album taking home the award for "Best Alternative Music Album" and "Losing My Religion" winning "Best Music Video" and "Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals".

In 1995, Berry suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm on stage during a concert in Switzerland.

"It felt like a bowling ball hit me in the head," Berry recalled to theLos Angeles Timessome time after the incident. "There wasn't any warning. I was just singing the falsetto part on ‘Tongue’ when it happened."

Though the incident wasn’t cited as the direct reason behind his decision to quit R.E.M., three years later, in 1997, his priorities began to change.

"I’ve been playing the drums since age nine,” Berry said in an official statement from Warner Bros, per Rolling Stone. "I’m at a point in my life where my priorities have shifted. I loved my 17 years with R.E.M. but I’m ready to … move on to a different phase of my life."

After leaving the band and touring life behind, Berry has kept a low profile, working on his farm in Georgia and enjoying life as a retired musician.

Berry was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside Stipe, Buck and Mills in 2007, reuniting with the band for the ceremony performance.

Kaia Gerber has given us an insight into Taylor Swift's lavish wedding to Travis Kelce. Speaking to Extra when promoting her new show The Shards, she called their romance "genuinely a love story."

Despite the lavish ceremony taking place in Madison Square Garden, Kaia Gerber's highlight was attending with her famous mother. "It was so fun to go with my mom," the model and actress shared earlier in the week on the red carpet of the event. "So, I had the best time."

"I mean, honestly, like driving in the car there with my mom and dad was so fun," she said to Extra about her mum, supermodel Cindy Crawford, and her father, businessman Rande Gerber.

Kaia added, "I literally felt like they were dropping me off at school or something. It's been a while since I've been alone in the backseat with, like, my parents in the front seat. And I was like, 'This is actually really fun.' "

Rande was not pictured at the wedding, so it's not certain if he attended, but the mother and daughter duo were pictured twinning in black gowns. Hairstylist Joe Handwerker shared a series of pictures of the pair before they attended the black-tie event.

60-year-old Cindy Crawford wore a one-shoulder black gown while her daughter wore a black velvet halter-neck gown.

Kaia Gerber has been friends with Taylor since at least 2015, when she appeared in the star-studded video for "Bad Blood." November of the same year, Gerber was spotted posing in an Instagram group photo with Swift, her mom, and fellow models Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne.

Rob Gronkowski, who attended the wedding with his girlfriend, Camille Kostek, also gave a hint at what happened behind closed doors. He told PEOPLE that the event had a raffle where the attendees could win prizes. “You had to earn the raffle tickets and that’s why I appreciate it. It wasn’t no hand-me-outs, you had to earn the raffle tickets, and that’s what made it so much fun,” the NFL tight end explained.

In all, “it was a magnificent wedding,” according to Gronkowski. “For how big it was, it was very intimate still. There’s no doubt about it.”

Colin Blunstone was still just 19 when he sang lead on "She's Not There," the 1964 hit that made The Zombies a household name almost overnight.

At the time, The Zombies were a young band from St Albans, England, with Rod Argent on keyboards, Chris White on bass, Paul Atkinson on guitar, Hugh Grundy on drums and Blunstone handling lead vocals. Together, they were trying to turn their local following into a full-time career in music. 

“We had been semi-professional for three years, and having a ball,” Argent told Forbes. “It got to where we were all about to leave secondary school at the age of 17. Some were going on to university, but I desperately wanted to turn The Zombies into a professional band.”

The Zombies’ first major opportunity came through a local competition offering a £250 prize. After winning the semifinal, the teenage band was stunned to see busloads of fans arrive at the final waving banners with their name on them. 

“We were really excited,” Agent recalled. “We won the competition, and, on the night we won it, there was a knock on the dressing room door afterwards. It was Dick Rowe, head of Decca Records.”

Rowe, the Decca executive famously known for turning down The Beatles, offered the young group a recording contract. Because the members were still underage, he asked them to take the paperwork home for their parents to review. 

The band initially planned to record “Summertime,” the Gershwin classic they had performed during the competition. But after producer Ken Jones suggested they record an original song instead, Argent and bassist Chris White each went home to write.

“It was only the second I'd ever written,” Agent admitted. “I thought I could write a song as good as The Beatles, and Colin would sound great singing lead vocals, and it would all come out sounding terrific. I had absolutely no knowledge of the millions of things that could go wrong.”

Argent took inspiration from old blues records while creating the song. “I wanted a verse that was quite moody based around a blues scale,” he explained. “I also wanted to introduce three-part harmony, which we had been doing ever since we had gotten together.”

Unlike many love songs of the era, “She’s Not There” centers on a narrator who discovers the woman he cared about was not who he thought she was.

Released in 1964, “She’s Not There” quickly turned The Zombies into an international success. The song climbed to No. 12 on the U.K. Singles Chart, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and also peaked at No. 2 in Canada. 

The song’s rapid rise came as a surprise to the band. The Zombies learned their breakthrough single had reached No. 1 on the Cash Box chart while they were in the studio recording their follow-up release, “Tell Her No.” 

“We were all very excited, of course, but also thought that was just what was supposed to happen,” Argent recalled.

Over 60 years later, “She’s Not There” still stands as one of The Zombies’ most recognized songs. Rolling Stone later ranked the track No. 297 on its “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list, and the recording joined the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016. 

Its popularity has continued into the streaming era, with the song surpassing 1 million streams on Pandora long after its original release.

Summer is not over for Prince William and Kate Middleton, but they're already looking back fondly on the season they've had so far.

Retinol doesn't work in isolation, it's most effective as part of a broader routine that addresses multiple aspects of skin aging. Dr. Nicole Lee, board-certified dermatologist and owner of Epoch Dermatology, previously outlined the approach.

"A well-rounded anti-aging routine usually includes four key components: sunscreen to prevent collagen breakdown, antioxidants like vitamin C to neutralize environmental damage, retinoids to stimulate collagen production and accelerate cell turnover, and barrier-supporting moisturizers to maintain skin hydration and resilience," she said. "When used consistently, this combination addresses both prevention and repair."

Retinol handles the repair and renewal piece of that equation, but it needs the other three to do its job fully. Antioxidants protect the collagen retinol is working to build, moisturizer keeps the skin barrier intact so retinol doesn't cause unnecessary irritation and sunscreen preserves the results by preventing UV damage from undoing the progress.

The trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury mother accused of killing her three young children in January 2023, began this week with jurors hearing detailed, difficult testimony from Patrick Clancy, Lindsay's ex-husband, as well as first responders and witnesses who described the scene inside the family's home.

On Friday, July 31, jurors left the courtroom to visit the Duxbury home where prosecutors say the killings took place, before Lindsay attempted to take her own life. The visit gives jurors a chance to see the property firsthand and connect those images to the physical layout described throughout testimony.

The visit follows testimony Thursday from first responders called to the home, who described what they found after Patrick returned from his errands.

Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan said jurors would also tour a CVS in Kingston and a restaurant in Plymouth's Cordage Park — both stops Lindsay's then-husband Patrick made on the night of Jan. 24, 2023, before he returned home and found the children unresponsive.

Prosecutors argue Lindsay deliberately sent her husband out to pick up takeout and children's medication so she would have time alone with the kids to carry out what they describe as a premeditated plan. Legal analysts say Friday's jury view could carry real weight moving forward, even though it comes down to a single, narrow question for jurors — not whether Clancy caused her children's deaths, which she has never disputed, but whether she understood what she was doing at the time. 

Seeing the home's actual layout, including the second-floor window and the basement where the children were found, gives jurors a physical frame of reference for testimony they've already heard, and may shape how they weigh the prosecution's argument that her actions were deliberate rather than the product of a psychotic break. 

CBS News Boston legal analyst Jennifer Roman has said the prosecution's related theory, that Clancy's suicide attempt was staged rather than genuine, may not land as intended with jurors, since the severity of her injuries from the fall arguably undercuts that claim.

What Jurors Have Seen and Heard So Far

Jurors have already been shown photographs of the exterior and interior of the family's former home, including the second-floor window prosecutors say Lindsay jumped from after the killings, along with photographs and 3D renderings of the basement where Patrick discovered the children.

According to testimony, baby Callan was found with a faint pulse and was rushed to a hospital. Cora and Dawson were later pronounced dead at the scene. Callan died several days later.

The Case Against Lindsay Clancy

Clancy does not deny that she strangled 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan with exercise bands — her defense is built entirely around whether she can be held criminally responsible, arguing she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis at the time. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have argued her actions were deliberate and planned. She has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder.

Her defense has argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time and was overmedicated, a condition they say left her unable to conform her behavior to the law.

What's Next in the Trial?

After Friday's site visits, jurors are expected to return to Plymouth Superior Court for additional witness testimony, including from South Shore Hospital medical staff who treated Lindsay for injuries sustained in the fall that left her paralyzed. The trial is ongoing.
